[[folder: Kingdom of Auranos]]
!! Princess Cleoina 'Cleo' Aurora Bellos
One of the four protagonists, and the second princess of Auranos. Cleo, as she is known by, seems to reflect much of her land at first, being shallow, spoiled, and social. Her sister's illness is when she first begins to show her side of steel, and the fall of her kingdom is what brings it out completely. Now the last member of her royal family, and a hostage to the Damoras, Cleo only bides her time and waits for an opportunity to reclaim her throne.
* ArrangedMarriage: Is betrothed to Aron, much to her displeasure. When King Gaius takes over, he breaks that betrothal [[FromBadToWorse so Cleo can marry Magnus instead]]. She’s even less happy about that. [[spoiler:But it all [[PerfectlyArrangedMarriage works out]] in the end.]]
* BreakTheCutie: As if watching her FirstLove die in front of her wasn’t enough, she then loses her sister, father and kingdom only days later, all at the same time.
* BrokenBird: There’s a stark difference between Cleo’s narration in the first book and her narration afterwards.
* TheCharmer: Her greatest weapon. Cleo excels at sweet-talking, using her political savvy and charisma to win herself allies or beguile her way out of trouble.
* DamselOutOfDistress: By the fourth book, Cleo’s become clever enough and fierce enough that, while she still ends up in danger, she’s often getting herself out of it.
* DeadpanSnarker: She mostly engages in PassiveAggressiveKombat, but there are times when Cleo can be far more openly sarcastic.
-->'''Cleo:''' The Purple Vine. How appropriate a name for a tavern in Paelsia. And how deeply uninspired.
* DefrostingIceQueen: It takes her a long time to warm up to [[spoiler:Magnus.]]
* DemonicPossession: [[spoiler:Is chosen as the water Kindred's host, though because of the interrupted ceremony, it doesn't root immediately; instead, Cleo is left in control, with the water Kindred fighting to take over.]]
* DistressedDamsel: Falls into this situation a time or two, early on. [[DamselOutOfDistress Afterwards, she stops waiting for rescue.]]
* DudeMagnet: Her beauty is commented on by many male characters, and she has just as many suitors. Theon, Jonas, [[AbhorrentAdmirer Aron, Lord Kurtis]], [[spoiler:Magnus]]...
* GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak: Cleo definitely has an adventurous side, shown by her frequently sneaking out of the castle, but she is primarily a girl who enjoys girly activities. Sunning herself, socializing with friends, and primping are all things she finds fun.
* GoodIsNotSoft: Make no mistake, Cleo is still one of the most moral and kind characters, even after being [[BrokenBird broken]], but she's also fiery and willing to do whatever she must to get what she wants.
* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: Her shame over a one-night stand with Aron put an end to the 'drinking' part, but Cleo initially has no interest in politics or ruling a kingdom, only having fun with her friends. [[BreakTheCutie Initially]].
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Cleo's blonde, moral, and compassionate.
* HeroicResolve: [[spoiler:Her sheer willpower is what lets her keep the water Kindred at bay for all of ''Immortal Reign''.]]
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: She's noted to be very short (a foot shorter than Jonas, and several inches below Lucia), so her dynamic with all the men she's teased with and/or loves are this.
* INeedAFreakingDrink: Temporarily breaks her non-drinking policy at her and Magnus's wedding feast, as their wedding ''night'' is coming up.
* LastOfHisKind: After the first book, she's the last member of the Bellos royal family.
* MarryForLove: What she dreams of doing. [[spoiler:She actually ends up fulfilling it, [[ArrangedMarriage just]] [[PerfectlyArrangedMarriage backwards.]]]]
* MeaningfulName: She was named after the goddess Cleiona, who by all accounts was just as frivolous—but also very strong-willed. [[spoiler:And happens to be her ancestor.]]
* TheMole: Eventually starts working as one for the rebels.
* NiceGirl: Even after everything she's been through, Cleo manages to hold onto her compassion and willingness to look for the good in others. [[spoiler:This is what lets her realize Magnus is not as terrible as he seems to be.]]
* ObliviousToLove: She has no idea Nic is in love with her; even when Emilia directly tells her so, Cleo just says he isn't, because [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments she would notice something like that]].
* RebelliousPrincess: While she is very feminine, Cleo is also very strong-willed. She often escapes from the castle by climbing out the ivy trellis on her sister’s window, runs off to Paelsia against her father’s orders, and is more than ready to put her foot down on marrying Theon despite his lower status.
* {{Revenge}}: She smiles and bides her time, but deep down Cleo wants nothing more than to overthrow the Damoras and reclaims her kingdom. [[spoiler:Befriending Lucia and falling for Magnus changes her goals.]]
* SilkHidingSteel: From the second book onwards. She's calm, sweet, and [[TheCharmer charming]] on the outside, but underneath has an utterly steel core, bucketloads of resolve, and does not take crap from anyone.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: While she does seem to like a bit of roughness in her men, Cleo is ultimately a good person who ''wants'' a good person; people like Aron, who show no regard for life, disgust her. [[spoiler:It’s also the good in Magnus, not the bad, that wins her over in the end.]]
* SpoiledBrat: She’s used to getting what she wants when she wants it, and it shows. The brattiness and selfishness get [[BrokenBird burned out of her]].
* StepfordSmiler: Type A; thanks to Gaius's DecadentCourt, Cleo quickly has to learn to keep her emotions under lock and key. She excels at it, perfecting a mask of polite sweetness while all her anger, hate, and despair boils underneath.
* TheTeetotaler: Cleo has sworn off wine ever since she got too drunk one night and slept with [[AbhorrentAdmirer Aron Lagaris]]. Save polite sips and [[INeedAFreakingDrink one understandable moment]], she doesn't touch a bottle throughout the series.
* TrueBlueFemininity: Blue is her favorite color, and the one she wears most often.
* WideEyedIdealist: At first, she believes that marriages should always be romantic, goodness will always conquer, and that Theon is TheHero in her personal fairytale. [[InTheBack That quickly]] [[FallenPrincess changes.]]

!! Princess Emilia Bellos
Cleo's elder sister, the crown princess of Auranos.
* TheAce: She seems to excel at everything she puts her hand to: politics, diplomacy, art, academics, even archery.
* CoolBigSis: Despite casting a pretty big shadow, Cleo admires Emilia very much, and they get along splendidly.
* DeathByDespair: The real source of her illness. The man she loved died, so she prayed to the goddess that she might die too.
* MarryForLove: Like her sister, she also dreams of doing this, so much so that she openly defied their father's ArrangedMarriage when she fell in love.
* MayDecemberRomance: Her secret lover was Simon Ranus, Theon's ''father''.
* StarCrossedLovers: The man she loved, Simon, was the captain of the guard; a respectable position, but not high enough to court her, and they had to keep their affair secret.
* ToughLeaderFacade: She's polite, poised, respectful, and all in all the perfect heir to the throne, but when she was younger she had her sister's defiant streak. Emilia just tampered it down to better be the ideal queen.

!! Aron Lagaris
Cleo's betrothed, an arrogant and foppish young noble, with a hidden, disturbing blood-thirsty streak.
* AbhorrentAdmirer: Not insomuch looks as behavior. Cleo's repulsed by his sleaziness, arrogance, cowardice, and blatant disregard for human life.
* TheAlcoholic: Even for Auranos, Aron has an unsettling taste for wine. He's often found drinking before it's even dawn.
* AttemptedRape: Tries to do this to a peasant girl in ''Rebel Spring'' before Magnus stops him.
* BastardBastard: It’s mentioned early on that he’s a literal bastard. He definitely has the horrible attitude to go with it.
* BerserkButton: Being called a bastard.
* DirtyCoward: Immediately surrenders to Magnus when the prince corners them, much to Cleo's disgust.
* {{Jerkass}}: He's arrogant, rude, entitled, and has no concern for the lives and well-beings of others. [[SarcasmMode Definitely a pleasant fellow]].
* LackOfEmpathy: He sees absolutely no reason why he should care about murdering another human being, nor feels bad for the affected lives in the slightest.
* PetTheDog: He has one moment where he seems a little sad and shocked by Emilia's death.
* ProfessionalButtKisser: As soon as the Damoras roll into town (and after a healthy bout of humiliation), Aron makes it his duty to suck up to them as much as he can.
* {{Sadist}}: Openly admits he ''enjoyed'' watching the life drain out of Tomas, the Paelsian he murdered.
* SpoiledBrat: Aron tends to whine or throw fits when he doesn't get what he wants. He's unfavorably, but truthfully, compared to a tantruming child at one point.
* StalkerWithACrush: He does not take Cleo's engagement to Magnus well, making it his personal business to follow her around the castle and invade her personal space.

!! Nicolo 'Nic' Cassian
An orphan who was accepted into the castle staff, and one of Cleo's best friends since childhood.
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: He's in love with Cleo, presumably since they were kids, but she only considers him a very dear friend.
* TheCharmer: He's got a knack for storytelling, which aids itself to making himself popular with locals or spinning a few lies.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Cleo.
* DemonicPossession: [[spoiler:He's possessed by Kyan at the end of ''Crystal Storm''.]]
* DrowningMySorrows: He tends to turn to drink whenever he's feeling desolate, especially after the events of the third book.
* FieryRedhead: He's outspoken, passionate, and has carrot-colored hair to go with it.
* FightingFromTheInside: [[spoiler:He resists Kyan's control as much as he can, and is able to take control for just a few moments--long enough to let Cleo escape.]]
* ICantBelieveAGuyLikeYouWouldNoticeMe: Is shocked that handsome and wealthy Ashur would take an interest in a lowly servant like him.
* IfItsYouItsOkay: He is very confused when Prince Ashur kisses him, partially because of how sudden it is and partially because he never really thought of guys that way. He proclaims later that he is still into girls, but he also likes Ashur too.
* PlatonicLifePartners: With Cleo, later on.
* SelfDeprecation: Nic doesn't have a very high opinion of himself, thanks to his low birth and lack of real political or military power. All he has is words, which Cleo can do herself, and his loyalty, and what good is that when it's from someone like him? Cleo, naturally, disagrees fiercely.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Cleo.

!! Mira Cassian
Nic's sister and Cleo's other best friend.

* AmbiguousSituation: It's not clear if she did manage to eavesdrop on Gaius or not; Magnus attempts to stand up for her by claiming she was standing too far away to hear anything, but his father isn't willing to take that chance.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Cleo.
* DroppedABridgeOnHer: She's unceremoniously murdered half-way through the second book.
* NeckSnap: Gaius kills her this way.
* SheKnowsTooMuch: She's murdered because Gaius suspects her of eavesdropping on his plans.

!! Theon Ranus
A palace guard who is assigned as Cleo's bodyguard. Killed by Magnus during the first book.
* BodyguardCrush: He's Cleo's bodyguard and it doesn't take long for feelings to begin to blossom between them.
* FirstLove: Cleo's.
* KnightInShiningArmor: He was noble, heroic, an excellent fighter, and idealistic. A practically perfect fit for this.
* TheLostLenore: For Cleo. [[spoiler:She even has nightmares about him accusing her of unfaithfulness when she starts falling for Magnus (though the fact Magnus killed Theon is also a factor).]]
* WeHardlyKnewYe: He gets stabbed InTheBack two-thirds of the way through the first book.

!! Nerissa Florens
A seemingly unassuming girl who turns out to be a rebel. Later becomes Cleo's handmaiden and trusted confidant.
* AbusiveParents: Her father used to beat her when she was a toddler, though she doesn’t remember much of it.
* BoyishShortHair: Which is particularly notable when every other woman in the land has long hair.
* TheConfidant: Thanks to [[AnyoneCanDie the nature]] of the series, Nerissa eventually ends up Cleo's only remaining female friend. As such, Cleo often entrusts her with secrets and worries that she can't share with Nic.
* HoneyTrap: She flirts (and probably does more) with palace guards to get information.
* TheInfiltration: A specialty to hers. She's got a knack for ending up in positions she ordinarily shouldn't be able to get, and she uses that to help the rebellion. [[spoiler:And later Cleo, after Amara takes over. Nerissa gets herself assigned as Amara's aid, but only so she can put herself in a position to help Cleo when she needs it.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: To the rebellion, [[spoiler:and later to Cleo. When Amara recruits her, she seems to go along with it, but because she’s not a POV character we have no idea where her allegiances really lie up until she reveals herself as TheMole.]]
* WiseBeyondHerYears: She's very calm and mellow, often able to take a step back and look at things impartially. This makes her an excellent advice-giver to Cleo [[spoiler:and Amara]].
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Kingdom of Paelsia]]
!! Jonas Agallon
The son of a wine-seller and one of the four major characters. Jonas's life changes when his brother Tomas is killed by Lord Aron Lagaris; combined with his rage over the royals' and nobles' blatant disregard for Paelsia, he takes it upon himself to force them out of his homeland however he can.
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: There's a period of time where he fancies Cleo, but she never seems to consider him as anything more than a good friend. [[spoiler:He eventually moves past it.]]
* AntiHero: He's got a vengeful streak and openly shuns authority, but has only good goals in mind for Paelsia.
* BadassNormal: No formal training or powerful magic [[spoiler:(that he can use, that is)]] here, just sheer grit. Considering he's able to hold his own against Magnus, orchestrate several rescues, and boldly defy both magical and non-magical beings who are more powerful than him, grit may be all he needs.
* TheCasanova: Has some shades of this early on, as he uses Laelia to get an audience with her father. Later books see him becoming more of a ChivalrousPervert who will step in to return a girl's stolen purse.
* ChickMagnet: He wins the attention of Lysandra, [[AbhorrentAdmirer Laelia]], and Phaedra. Not bad. [[spoiler:As well as getting some ShipTease with Lucia, by the end.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: Not quite so much as others, but he definitely has a sarcastic streak.
* {{Determinator}}: "Nothing is impossible" may as well be his catch phrase
* ElementalAbsorption: [[spoiler:Being brought back from near-death, twice, by Watchers, leaves him with the curious ability to act as a 'vessel' for magic. He can’t use it, other than one or two stress-induced moments, but it comes in handy when Lucia’s magic is drained.]]
* GuileHero: Shows himself as one in ''Gathering Darkness'' where he improvises a plan to rescue Lysandra involving stolen guard uniforms and fireworks. He had traces of it earlier as well, but tended to let his emotions get in the way.
* HollywoodAtheist: Of the four main characters, Jonas is the one who most disbelieves in magic, the Watchers, and goddesses; Lucia starts out religious, Magnus acknowledges their existence but doesn’t particularly care, and Cleo comes around to believe in them by the end of the first book. As far as Jonas is concerned, nothing exists until he’s seen it with his own eyes. It takes being healed by magic and actually meeting Watchers to bring him around.
* ILetGwenStacyDie: [[spoiler:Lysandra’s death, just as he was starting to realize how much she meant to him.]]
* KnightInSourArmor: He's patriotic and hopes to one day free and restore Paelsia. He's also deeply embittered by the corrupt royals who created this situation in the first place, recognizes that Paelsia isn't [[YouCantFightFate completely blameless]], and skeptical of people who offer aid for seemingly no reason.
* MaybeEverAfter: [[spoiler:He and Lucia aren't actually in a relationship in the epilogue, but it's noted that a romance between them is likely an inevitability, as they spend a lot of time together.]]
* MyCountryRightOrWrong: His loyalty is to Paelsia above all else.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler:He ''deeply'' regrets turning on Felix after learning about his past instead of just continuing to believe in his friend.]]
* ProperlyParanoid: He does not buy King Gaius's claims to wanting to help Paelsia. He's proven right when Gaius uses them as cannon fodder and then conquers them.
* RebelLeader: Forms a band of rebels at the end of ''Falling Kingdoms'', after witnessing Limeros use and conquer Paelsia.
* {{Revenge}}: One of his initial goals is to avenge his dead brother, murdered by Aron. He also plans to kill Cleo for her ([[UnreliableNarrator seeming]]) indifference, but that gradually changes.
* SelfDeprecation: His self-esteem is pretty much shot to pieces only halfway through the series. [[spoiler:His rebellion fails to achieve much except the loss of life, all his loved ones get hurt or die because of their association with him, and he’s quickly realizing just how outmatched a normal former peasant like him is in a world of politics, magic, and the supernatural.]]
* ScrewDestiny: The notions of fate and destiny infuriate him, as he believes Paelsia’s reliance on it is why they’ve allowed Auranos and Limeros to walk over them for so long. In fact, when told by Timotheus that [[spoiler:Lucia’s fate is to die in childbirth, Jonas tells him to screw off, then finds a way to help her survive the birth.]]
* ShipTease: With [[spoiler:Lucia in the fifth and sixth books. They even share a kiss.]]
* TookALevelInKindness: He’s full of anger and hate at the start of the series, but gradually learns to let go of those negative feelings, instead becoming calmer and more forgiving.
* YouKilledMyFather: Brother, actually, but this is why he hates Aron Lagaris, and initially, [[RevengeByProxy Cleo]].

!!Brion Radenos
Jonas's best friend since childhood, a blithe young man who acts as his second-in-command to liberate Paelsia from Auranos, and later Limeros.
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: Unfortunately for him, his feelings for Lysandra are completely one-sided.
* AmazonChaser: He loves the fiery, battle-ready Lysandra.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Jonas.
* DefiantToTheEnd: Being captured and physically beaten by Limerians does nothing to stop his spirit. Brion spends his last few moments brave and literally spiting in the face of Prince Magnus, telling them to do their worst.
* InformedFlaw: Jonas remnisces that Brion is the reckless one between the two of them, yet we never see such moments; if anything, he's the one holding back Jonas and Lysandra from charging about recklessly.
* KilledOffForReal: He meets his end at the end of the second book, courtesy of Aron.
* LoveAtFirstSight: He taken with Lysandra pretty much the moment he meets her.
* NiceGuy: Brion is one of the very few rebels who is openly kind to Cleo when she's captured by them.
* NumberTwo: Serves as Jonas's in the rebellion.
* UndyingLoyalty: He essentially gets caught up in the rebellion because he decided he was going to follow his friend to the ends of the earth.

!! Lysandra Barbas
A Paelsian girl whose hometown was ransacked by Limeros for slaves. Swearing to free her stolen brother, she runs off and eventually joins Jonas's rebels.

* BirdsOfAFeather: An angry young Paelsian seeking revenge against a royal for the death(s) of a family member, who holds a disbelief in magic and gods, and fights for her country. Is it any wonder that she and Jonas ([[BelligerentSexualTension eventually]]) get along?
* BrokenBird: Her spirit is temporarily broken after her brother Gregor is killed right in front of her. She pulls herself together later, but no one around her is convinced she’s the same old Lysandra she’s always been.
* DeadGuyJunior: [[spoiler:Lucia names her daughter Lyssa, out of respect for Lysandra’s fierceness and courage.]]
* DudeMagnet: Jonas, Brion, and Felix all express an interest in her.
* HotBlooded: She is very opinionated and eager to take the fight to the Limerians.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Lysandra is defensive, snappish, hot-headed, and rude at every first meeting. She's not, however, incapable of kindness, such as when she comforts Jonas over Brion's death, and she cares very much for the people of Paelsia.
* KilledMidSentence: [[spoiler: "Jonas? I love—" *bursts into flames*]]
* {{Revenge}}: Like a lot of the main cast, she has it out for King Gaius.
* {{Tomboy}}: Very much. The one time she’s forced into a dress, she reacts distastefully the whole time.
* {{Tsundere}}: She shows her love and affection by mocking people.

!! Felix
A traveler who comes to Jonas's assistance one day, and then tags along seemingly for the fun of it.
* ChildSoldier: He's been fighting since he was eleven. [[spoiler:Under the force and training of King Gaius.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: His entire family was destroyed when he was eleven, [[spoiler:and he was taken in by King Gaius to be forcefully raised as an assassin.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: He's usually on the lighter, jovial side of this, but will becoming cutting in an instant if you tick him off.
* EyeScream: One of his eyes is gouged out during [[spoiler:his torture in Kraeshia.]]
* IfYoureSoEvilEatThisKitten: Inverted. An old lady begs him to rescue her kitten from a tree, Felix tries to tell her off [[spoiler:because he’s evil, dammit!]]...and then grudgingly rescues it.
* LoveAtFirstSight: PlayedForLaughs. He mentions he doesn't believe in this; however, he ''does'' believe in ''lust'' at first sight, and he does indeed for Amara.
* PungeonMaster: With an InUniverse pun. He cracks a joke about needing to be watchful for hawks ([[DontExplainTheJoke the shapeshifted form of Watchers]]).
* ReformedButRejected: [[spoiler:Flip-flopped. The first time, he genuinely did want to turn his life around, but as soon as Jonas learns about his past as an assassin, he rejects Felix. [[SelfFulfillingProphecy This betrayal stings Felix so deeply that he decides it's not worth trying to be good after all.]] The second time he tries reforming, it's with the full acceptance and apologies of Jonas.]]
* SadClown: He uses levity to hide his pain over his DarkAndTroubledPast.
* ThenLetMeBeEvil: [[spoiler:Jonas turns on him when he learns of his past, expecting him to be evil. Felix, who was originally trying to be ''good'', decides that if his only friend in the world isn't going to believe in him, then he may as well not even try.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Kingdom of Limeros]]
!! Prince Magnus Lukas Damora
The crown prince of Limeros and one of the four main characters. Magnus is haughty and cold, yet yearns for his abusive father's approval. Learning of his sister's powers and the Kindred, Magnus decides upon the goals of both looking out for her, and gathering his own power.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: His reputation and temperament does not stop him from being swooned over by the populace. [[spoiler:PlayedWith for Cleo, who's attracted to him despite his bad traits, but really likes his ''good'' ones.]]
* AmbitionIsEvil: He has his own plans for the Kindred, hoping to use them to either usurp his father or prove himself to his father. It's because he's so concerned with proving himself that he is unable to embrace the better aspects of his character, and thus he stays on his path of evil. [[spoiler:He's later able to overcome this, finding the ambition instead to be a better man, husband and ruler, rather than being a more ''powerful'' one.]]
* ArrangedMarriage: Gaius arranges for him to marry Cleo after he finished conquering Auranos, as a way to smooth over relations with the populace. Neither he nor Cleo is happy about it. [[spoiler:But it all [[PerfectlyArrangedMarriage works out]] in the end.]]
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:He decides to try to be a better person and ruler than his father in ''Frozen Tides''.]]
* BeautifulDreamer: [[spoiler:Cleo]] notes that he looks beautiful when he’s asleep.
* BestServedCold: Pissing him off is a deeply dangerous thing to do, because Magnus is an excellent grudge-holder. Even if his revenge isn’t today, he’ll get it, usually when you don’t see it coming. For example, he waits ''ten years'' for the chance to pay back Kurtis for childhood bullying.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Once he gets his [[BrotherSisterIncest feelings]] for Lucia sorted out, he’s able to settle into this comfortably. Despite everything, he never, ever stops believing in her, and makes it known that if anything happens to her, there'll be hell to pay.
* BlackKnight: He’s called The Prince of Blood, clothed in all black, and has a broody temperament to match. [[spoiler:Cleo even calls him “my dark prince.”]]
* BrotherSisterIncest: Has romantic feelings for Lucia, which deeply shames him.
* ByronicHero: TallDarkAndHandsome, sarcastic, broody, emotional, has abusive parents, and has bits of goodness in him that his upbringing and his own attempts can't quite snuff out.
* ChickMagnet: Many girls in Limeros swoon over him.
* DeadpanSnarker: Is probably ''the'' sassiest person in the series.
-->'''Magnus:''' ''(after praying to Valoria in an hour of need, only to hear a wolf howling nearby)'' I was trying to be sincere and this is what I get in return? A hungry wolf to tear me apart on the last night of my life? Much gratitude, goddess.
** When he [[EvilIsPetty shows Nic a drawing of him being hung]]:
-->'''Nic:''' You think that’s funny?\
'''Magnus:''' What? You don’t like it? Well, they do say art is subjective.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Male example. Magnus keeps himself emotionally distant from most people, with his sister Lucia being the only person he lets get close. It takes him a long time to warm up to anyone, [[spoiler:as Cleo can attest to]].
* DemonicPossession: [[spoiler:In the final hour of the series. Kyan, after being forced out of Nic's body, decides to take Magnus's instead. Fortunately, it's short-lived.]]
* DrowningMySorrows: He develops a taste for wine, which naturally leads to this on a few occasions.
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: Despite his conflicting opinion on her, Magnus does truly love his mother, and is devastated by [[spoiler:her death.]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards:
** Try as he might, he can’t make himself enjoy needless cruelty the way his father can. Cruelty to those who wrong him, sure, but to random people? Nope. Even hunting for sport bothers him.
** He's unsettled by Aron's leeriness and AttemptedRape of a random woman, stepping in to stop it.
* EvilIsPetty: One of his greater flaws is that he likes to get back at people even in the pettiest of ways, such as making Lord Kurtis beg for mercy with a MeaningfulEcho or taunting Nic with a drawing of him being hung.
* GallowsHumor: His snarkiness does not stop in the least when he’s faced with mortal peril.
* GlasgowGrin: Half of one. He has a scar extending from his right ear to the corner of his mouth, courtesy of [[AbusiveParents his father]]. It doesn’t seem to do much to ruin his good looks in the eyes of [[CelebCrush common girls]].
* GoodIsNotNice: [[spoiler:Even after he decides to reform himself, he remains his sarcastic, aloof self.]]
* GreenEyedMonster: He’s openly jealous about [[spoiler:Jonas’s closeness to Cleo]] later on.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: [[spoiler:Like his sister, Magnus wavers between good and evil a lot. It’s not until the end of the fourth book that he fully commits to bettering himself, and the end of the fifth that he’s actually able to follow through.]]
* HiddenDepths:
** You wouldn’t expect someone [[BlackKnight like him]] to be an artist, would you?
** He’s so prickly and defensive because he’s afraid of letting people in and getting hurt by them.
** His sense of self-worth is practically non-existent; he constantly holds himself up to his abusive father's impossible standards, and is tormented by his inability to be as evil as he feels he ''should'' be. He's very discomforted by social situations, which as crown prince he's expected to face often, so he also worries about his ability to handle such things in the future. And then, of course, [[BrotherSisterIncest his own feelings for Lucia]] disgust him because he ''knows'' they're wrong.
* IAmAMonster: Whenever characters like his mother try to reassure him about the goodness in him, Magnus rebukes them almost sadly by stating that he's his father's son to the core. [[spoiler:His resigned attitude turns to horror while having his LoveEpiphany in ''Frozen Tides'', and he decides to reject his monstrosity, striving [[TheAtoner to change]].]]
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: He has no plans of ever revealing his feelings to Lucia, instead resolving to make sure she's always loved, cared for, and happy. [[MySisterIsOffLimits He does have a hard time sticking to this.]]
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Much of his condescending attitude and so-called surety of his status is fake; in reality, Magnus has a terrible sense of self-worth, always measuring himself to his father and finding himself wanting. [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold For good reason, as he’s ultimately not nearly as bad as Gaius.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's haughty, sarcastic, manipulative, and overall an asshole, but to his frustration has compassion that he can't seem to snuff out. [[spoiler:The 'heart of gold' part gradually becomes more dominant at the end of the series when he stops fighting it, though the other traits remain.]]
* LoveRedeems: [[spoiler:What finally pushes him to start becoming a better person is having his feelings for Cleo reciprocated, since he can’t stand the person he is and feels she deserves someone better. Change isn’t as easy as that, of course]], but he does go through with it.
* LovingAShadow: Suggested; Alexius muses that Magnus only thought himself in love with Lucia because she was the only person in his life to show him kindness.
* ManipulativeBastard: Not nearly as badly as his father, but Magnus is definitely adept at playing with people's emotions or strong-arming them into doing what he wants.
* MySisterIsOffLimits: He makes it his job to scare off as many of Lucia’s suitors as he possibly can. Granted, this is partially because of [[BrotherSisterIncest his own feelings]] for her.
* PetTheDog: Numerous times to Lucia [[spoiler:and Cleo]], but one notable moment of kindness is aimed at a serving girl, Amia. When his father catches her spying for Magnus, Magnus tries to indicate to her that she should sell him out to save herself; when she refuses, he speaks up for her life, and then later gives her a bag of money and sends her away to be safe. [[spoiler:[[KickTheDog His father tracks her down and kills her anyway,]] but hey, he tried.]]
* PragmaticVillainy: What Magnus tries to justify his dislike of overt cruelty as. The truth is he just doesn’t have the heart for it.
* TheSnarkKnight: He’ll turn his sharp tongue on anyone and mock any situation, including his own.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Many remarks are made on how much he looks like his father.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: He’s cold and aloof to everyone, save the people he loves. Which is pretty much just his sister. [[spoiler:Once he gets past his {{Tsundere}} stage for Cleo and finds out his feelings are reciprocated, he proves himself to be vastly affectionate and loving to her, too.]]
* TallDarkAndSnarky: He’s tall, dark-haired, handsome, and very sarcastic.
* TranquilFury: Magnus's cold demeanor holds even when he's pissed off. When confronting [[spoiler:Aron]], for example, he doesn't shout, just calmly states that [[spoiler:he killed his mother]] and for that he needs to die.
* {{Tsundere}}: His narration mentions aspects of [[spoiler:Cleo]] he finds attractive or respectable, but his words say the exact opposite. She even [[LampshadeHanging lampshades it:]]
-->“He’d loved her hair. She knew this because he’d never failed to mention how annoying it was that she wore it down, rather than pulled back from her face.”
* WellDoneSonGuy: Much as he hates his father, he also can’t stop wanting his approval and love.
* WineIsClassy: He gradually develops a taste for Paelsian wine, but ''only'' Paelsian wine.

!! Princess Lucia Eva Damora
One of the four main characters, Lucia is the (unknown to her or Magnus) adopted daughter of the Damoras. Her birth was foretold as the [[TheChosenOne successor]] of Eva, marking her as a sorceress of great power and destiny. She was stolen out of her cradle as a baby to raised as a weapon for King Gaius, and only now have her powers begun to awaken.
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:Becomes this in the last third of the series, resolving to go through with saving the world as atonement for her misdeeds.]]
* BadassBookworm: She loves reading, frequently devouring whatever books she can get ahold of. She's also a very powerful sorceress who can effortlessly set things on fire or kill someone with her mind.
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler:Her mother tries to kill her, her brother's feelings for her create a rift between them, her OnlyFriend was using her, and then to top it off the man she loves was assigned to kill her.]] And that's just in the first three books!
* BrokenBird: Being used by the people around her leaves Lucia with emotional scars and trust issues.
* TheChosenOne: Her birth was prophesied one thousand years ago, as the sorceress who would find the Kindred and restore--or destroy--the world as we know it.
* CorruptTheCutie: Her ''elementia'' has the side effect of slowly [[LackOfEmpathy freezing her heart]] and stoking her pride into arrogance.
* DaddysGirl: Unlike Magnus, who has rather mixed feelings on their father due to the constant stem of abuse, Lucia adores King Gaius. If she has to choose between going to him or Althea for advice, she'll pick him every time, and trusts him whole-heartedly.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: [[spoiler:Even while in the midst of a RoaringRampageOfRevenge, Lucia still loves her family, and screams at Kyan to stop when he tries burning Magnus alive.]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards: [[spoiler:She might be furious with everything that's happened to her, but in the end Lucia doesn't really want to destroy the world.]]
* HappilyAdopted: Though she didn't know she was adopted at first. She still loves the Damoras after finding out.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Starts as the WhiteSheep in the dark Damora family. [[spoiler:Slides down the slippery slope until all the betrayal and manipulation makes her embrace evil and goes on a rampage across Paelsia. Eventually steps back in horror at what she’s done, briefly works for Kyan again ([[IHaveYourWife at hostage-point]]), and then turns on him one last time to firmly settle on the side of good.]]
* IAmAMonster: She becomes more fearful of herself as her ''elementia'' grows stronger and beyond her control.
* LackOfEmpathy: In her darker moments, after her ''elementia'' awakens, Lucia struggles with being able to empathize with servants, and even enjoys their fear. When she snaps out of these moments, she’s horrified, especially at the notion [[ItGetsEasier those moments might become the norm]].
* LivingMacguffin: Deconstructed. Everyone is interested in using her because of her abilities, and the stress of being constantly manipulated gives Lucia a pile of trust issues and self-image issues.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: She is perfectly willing to corrupt herself with her ''elementia'' if it means keeping her father and brother safe.
* LoveRedeems: [[spoiler:Realizing her daughter won’t have a world to grow up in if Kyan has his way is one [[EvenEvilHasStandards of the two]] things that turns her on him.]]
* LovingAShadow: In ''Crystal Storm'', she admits that she only fancied herself in love with Alexius, that she only knew him for a short time before eloping with him, and that she's come to realize she doesn't actually know that much about him.
* MamaBear: [[spoiler:She will do ''anything'' for her daughter. Unfortunately, this [[IHaveYourWife does get used against her]].]]
* MaybeEverAfter: [[spoiler:She and Jonas aren't actually in a relationship in the epilogue, but it's noted that a romance between them is likely an inevitability, as they spend a lot of time together.]]
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler:Realizing she’s been helping Kyan destroy the world completely shocks Lucia out of the hateful, revenge-driven mindset she’d been, and is the catalyst for her HeelFaceTurn.]]
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: [[spoiler:Fed up with how she's been used and betrayed by everyone around her, and reeling over the loss of Alexius because of the Watchers, Lucia decides to make the entire world pay for everything terrible that's happened to her. Once she actually has time to calm down, though, and discovers she's pregnant, she grows to realize revenge is empty.]]
* ShipTease: With [[spoiler:Jonas in the fifth and sixth books. They even share a kiss.]]
* SilkHidingSteel: She perfectly embodies Limeros--beautiful from a distance, but cold, fierce, and hard up close.
* SmittenTeenageGirl: Acts like this around Alexius, swooning over his looks and how he makes her feel...without really knowing much about him.
* StarCrossedLovers: With Alexius, as he's an immortal and she's a mere mortal. [[spoiler:There's also the fact he's under her enemy's magical control.]]
* TeenPregnancy: [[spoiler:She’s sixteen when she and Alexius conceive their daughter, and thanks to the magical nature of the pregnancy, gives birth presumably while still sixteen.]]
* ThenLetMeBeEvil: [[spoiler:No small part of her slide into evil was fueled by how her mother feared she would become evil.]]
* TookALevelInJerkass: She was originally the typical NiceGirl. Then her magic awoke, and she became steadily seduced by power, [[LackOfEmpathy losing her compassion for ordinary people]] and [[spoiler:going on [[[[RoaringRampageOfRevenge a revenge trip]].]]
* TookALevelInKindness: [[spoiler:She doesn’t return to the sweet, innocent girl she used to be, but after calming down from her revenge streak, Lucia is at the very least openly remorseful about her actions.]]

!! King Gaius Damora
The king of Limeros, and Magnus and Lucia's father. As not only the leader of the invasion into Auranos, but another person searching for the Kindred, he's a major obstacle for all the major protagonists in some shape or form.
* AbusiveParents: Physically and emotionally. He cut open Magnus's face when his son was only a child, regularly beats or slaps him, and preys on his fears and emotions. He's ''slightly'' less abusive to Lucia, restricting himself to just emotional manipulation, but that's likely out of pragmatism as she could easily kill him if she wanted to.
* AmbitionIsEvil: Is it ever! Gaius will stop at nothing until he's god of the world, including using his own daughter as a weapon, killing a bastard son, manipulating and then betraying Paelsia, or [[spoiler:marrying Amara with plans to betray Kraeshia later]].
* ArrangedMarriage: [[spoiler:He marries Amara to secure Kraeshia's support. Presumably he was planning to kill the emperor, but she takes care of that for him.]]
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:Through the help of his mother, when he dies at the end of ''Frozen Tides'', he comes back. His death in ''Immortal Reign'' sticks, though.]]
* TheCasanova: Woos many women, all only to be used and discarded in his schemes for power.
* DeadpanSnarker: Must be where Magnus got it from.
* EnemyMine: [[spoiler:In ''Crystal Storm'' onwards, due to the increasing threat of the Kindred and Amara. He tells Cleo firmly that he still hates her and is only in this for Magnus and Lucia.]]
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes:
** Deep, ''deep'' down, he loves his children, [[spoiler:and in the latter half of the series certainly takes more risky action for their sakes. Doesn't excuse all his previous behavior.]]
** [[spoiler:He was also once deeply in love with Cleo's mother, Elena. Losing her is what turned him into the hateful, bitter man he is today.]]
* GodhoodSeeker: Desires the Kindred to become a god of the all the world.
* HeelFaceDoorSlam: [[spoiler:Just when it looks as if he might be turning over a new leaf, he’s assassinated.]]
* {{Hypocrite}}: Is the one who endorsed the witch hunts, yet not only is his daughter a sorceress, his mistress is a witch. [[spoiler:So is his mother.]]
* {{Jerkass}}: Everything negative about Magnus is exemplified in his father, with all the good traits removed.
* LackOfEmpathy: People's lives and livelihood mean nothing to him; they're just tools to be used and discarded, and he does so without a second thought.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: [[spoiler:He couldn’t deal with the pain of losing Elena, so instead he drank a potion that would burn away all human emotion.]]
* ManipulativeBastard: He plays Chief Basilius like a fiddle in securing Paelsia's help.
* TheParanoiac: He grows increasingly paranoid after almost dying at Magnus and Cleo's wedding, staying locked in the Auranian castle and watching everyone for treason.
* TheSociopath: He can cultivate a charming, intelligent and cultured persona in public, but behind closed doors Gaius is a cold, uncaring man with [[AGodAmI delusions of grandeur]], [[DisproportionateRetribution a spiteful and bloodthirsty nature]], and a horrible tendency to view people as tools. [[spoiler:As it turns out, he's a sociopath because he artificially destroyed all his humanity--he used to be no worse than Magnus. Coming BackFromTheDead restores his emotions, particularly his genuine love for his children.]]
* UsedToBeASweetKid: The prologue of ''Frozen Tides'' reveals he used to be a normal boy who was scared of the dark and cried for his mother.
* WouldHarmAChild: His own son, too. When Magnus was seven, Gaius caught him stealing a dagger while visiting the Bellos family, [[DisproportionateRetribution and in a rage took it and slashed open his face]].
* WouldHitAGirl: He slaps Cleo twice, then chokes her, when she tries to protest against marrying Magnus.

!! Queen Althea Damora
Gaius's wife, Magnus's birth mother, and Lucia's adopted one. A cold, impersonal woman who reacts to much of the events around her with bland apathy.
* FreudianExcuse: Althea mentions that she had a mother who was emotionally distant, and suspects that it's where she gets her own coldness from. She's just copying what she knows as motherly behavior.
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: How she justifies [[spoiler:working with witches--it's all in the name of protecting Lucia from Gaius and from herself.]]
* MamaBear: She [[PassiveAggressiveKombat very politely]] reminds Cleo that she will do ''anything'' for her children. [[spoiler:This includes killing them, in order to protect Lucia from herself.]]
* ParentalNeglect:
** She was very emotionally neglectful of her children, which she comes to regret near the end of the first book. After that, she promises to treat them better, and makes more of an effort to be there for them.
** Her own mother was also very distant from her.
* ThePerfectionist: Lucia reminisces that, growing up, Althea was never satisfied with anything less than perfection, from herself or from her daughter. If Lucia ever made a social faux pas at dinner parties, Althea wouldn’t say or do anything until it was over, then reprimanded her daughter harshly.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Likely where Magnus gets it from. Althea is very cold to just about everyone, even her own children at times, but they're also the only ones she actually make efforts to be kind to.
* ToughLeaderFacade: Her coldness is all in the name of being what she believes to be a good queen and mother.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler:She believes that Lucia is doomed to be corrupted by her magic, and wants to save her from that by any means necessary. Her plan is to keep her drugged in a coma while she searches for [[PowerLimiter Eva's ring]], but if she can't find it in time, then she'll kill Lucia so she can die as herselft.]]

!! Selia Damora
Gaius's deceased mother. [[spoiler:Really a witch, and alive in a small Limerian village.]]
* AbusiveParents: [[spoiler:She loves her son (or at least claims to), but also poisons his relationships and his mind for her own purposes. Literally, in one case--she poisoned Elena, the woman he loved, to death because she ''didn't want them to have a relationship''. This is despite the fact ''both of them were married to other people''.]]
* BitchInSheepsClothing: [[spoiler:Unlike the rest of her family, Selia is perfectly cordial and unassuming on the surface. Underneath, she's every bit as power-hungry, manipulative, and cutthroat as her son.]]
* FakingTheDead: [[spoiler:With Gaius's help.]]
* KickTheSonOfABitch: [[spoiler:She's killed by her son, the only person she claims to genuinely love. After everything she did [[AbusiveParents to him]], she fully deserved it.]]
* LoveIsAWeakness: PlayedWith. She’s perfectly okay with familial love, it’s romantic love that she believes is illusionary.
* ManipulativeBastard: [[spoiler:She plays everyone she can--her old friends, her new allies, even her son--in her bid to free the Kindred.]]
* NeckSnap: [[spoiler:Gaius kills her with this.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: [[spoiler:The fact she's still alive and is in league with Kyan are both huge spoilers for the last half of the series.]]
* WouldHarmAChild: [[spoiler:She poisoned Elena while she was pregnant, and actually ''hoped'' her child (Cleo) would die with her.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Kraeshian Empire]]
!! Ashur Cortas
The third child and prince of Kraeshia, Ashur arrives in Mytica for Cleo and Magnus's wedding. However, he sticks around after because of a "purely academic" interest in the Kindred.
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:His sister seemingly kills him at the end of the third book, but Ashur returns in the fourth, revealing that he survived thanks to [[OutGambitted predicting her behavior]] and taking a resurrection potion in advance.]]
* BrutalHonesty: He has little patience for double-speak, instead vocalizing his opinions clearly.
* TheCasanova: Has the reputation of one, and Ashur himself admits that he's played with many feelings before.
* TheCharmer: Ashur has a naturally charismatic and easy-going personality that makes it very easy for him to win people over.
* FatalFlaw: Softness, according to his grandmother and Amara. Ashur has a tendency to give his heart away too easily and be more forgiving than he should, [[spoiler:which Amara takes advantage of to stab him.]]
* LadykillerInLove: With Nic. Ashur has quite a history and the reputation to match, yet it's Nic who surprises him by winning his heart.
* MartialPacifist: He’s a pacifist and disapproves of his family’s blood-thirsty history--in fact, he's away so often specifically to get away from them and their conquering. Yet he’ll still use violence if he must.
* PetTheDog: His wedding gift to Cleo is a dagger, in case she needs to kill herself or Magnus to escape their wedding night.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Beyond being the most moral of his family, [[spoiler:he's seeking the Kindred not for himself, but to seal them away from those who would misuse them.]]
* StraightGay: He's been engaged three times, but broken them all off because he's not interested in woman.
* WalkingTheEarth: Rather than help with politics, he prefers to travel the world, learning about myths and legends.
* WhiteSheep: In a family filled with sexists and ruthless political cutthroats, Ashur stands out for not only disapproving of such things, but wanting no part in the lifestyle his family espouses.

!! Amara Cortas
The fourth child and only princess of Kraeshia, Amara is a charming and seductive, but equally ruthless and power-hungry young woman. Her eyes are on the Kindred in hopes of using them to expand her power.
* AbusiveParents: Her father tried to drown her as a baby. That should tell you everything you need to know about her relationship with him. [[spoiler:Her grandmother is also emotionally manipulative and is using Amara for her own gains.]]
* AmbitionIsEvil: She has her eyes on proving herself to be a worth successor to the Kraeshian throne, no matter what she has to do to get there. [[spoiler:When she realizes her family won't help, she has her father and two of her brothers poisoned.]]
* ArrangedMarriage: [[spoiler:With Gaius, later down the line.]]
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:In the epilogue, she's decided to begin the steps of becoming a better person.]]
* BrutalHonesty: Like her brother, she prefers to speak her mind instead of engaging in the PassiveAggressiveKombat of Mytica.
* DoesNotLikeMen: She’ll seduce them, but Amara has a very, very low opinion on men, thanks to being raised in a severely patriarchal society.
* KickTheDog: [[spoiler:Enforced. She frames Felix, who she was starting to love, for ''her'' crime of killing the rest of her family. Amara knew full well he'd be tortured horrifically and then put to death, and hoped that by doing this she could cut out [[LoveIsAWeakness weakness]] before it grew too strong.]]
* LoveIsAWeakness: Her resounding belief is that men cannot be trusted nor loved, and that providing the opportunity only opens the way for heartbreak at best and abuse at worst. [[spoiler:This leads to her framing Felix for her crime specifically to kill their burgeoning love.]]
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone:
** [[spoiler:Killing ([[BackFromTheDead as far as she knows]]) Ashur really sticks with her.]]
** [[spoiler:Realizing her lust for power almost helped the Kindred bring about the end of the world horrifies her just as much.]]
* NiceToTheWaiter: PlayedWith. Amara makes it a point to know each and every one of her servants’ and guards’ names, but that’s out of pragmatism and projecting that she does care rather than actually caring.
* PragmaticVillainy: She’s absolutely horrified when [[spoiler:her grandmother kidnaps baby Lyssa]]--not out of any moral quandaries, but because it's going to piss off [[TheDreaded Lucia]] needlessly.
* ReformedButRejected: [[spoiler:No one, save Nerissa, cares that Amara wants to turn her life around at the end of the series, though for good reason. She goes through with it anyway, but loses her throne.]]
* TheVamp: Seduces men solely so she can use them.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: Paelsia loves her, once she [[spoiler:sends soldiers to occupy it, because they’re strict but fair, and she’s the only royal in recent history who’s treated them half-way decently. And by that, they mean not taxed them to starvation nor worked them to death.]]
* WellIntentionedExtremist: As self-serving and ruthless as she is, Amara does genuinely want to bring important changes to Kraeshia, namely improving how women are treated by proving they ''are'' capable leaders.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Watchers]]
!!Alexius
A young ([[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld for his kind]]) Watcher, assigned to search for the prophesied sorceress. [[spoiler:Works for Melenia, at first out of misplaced idealism and later unwillingly.]]

* AntiVillain: [[spoiler:He initially works for Melenia because he believes she’s the only way to save his people. When he learns otherwise and tries to leave, Melenia [[{{Geas}} forces him to keep working for her anyway.]]]]
* TheExile: He exiles himself to Mytica in ''Gathering Darkness'' so he can be with Lucia. [[spoiler:In truth, Melenia forced him into exile so he could kill Lucia.]]
* TheGadfly: For a two-thousand-year-old immortal being, Alexius seems to get his kicks out of teasing Lucia.
* {{Geas}}: [[spoiler:Melenia forces one on him that makes him obey her every command. It comes to a head when he has to choose between killing Lucia or killing himself, death being the only escape. He chooses the latter.]]
* GirlOfMyDreams: During Lucia’s coma, he makes contact with her through her dreams.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Decides to end his own life rather than end Lucia’s.]]
* InLoveWithTheMark: [[spoiler:He was supposed to watch over Lucia so that he could someday kill her to bring back the Kindred. Instead, he found himself falling in love.]]
* TheMole: [[spoiler:By the third book, he's forced to act as one for Melenia.]]
* PutOnABus: He disappears halfway through the second book, but [[TheBusCameBack returns in the third]]. [[spoiler:That's because, in that timespan, Melenia's been enforcing her will on him.]]
* SomeoneToRememberHimBy: [[spoiler:He dies, but Lucia later discovers she’s pregnant with his child.]]
* StalkerWithACrush: Harbors a crush on Lucia, so he follows her around in hawk form and enters her dreams.
* StalkerWithoutACrush: Though initially, he was just doing his duty watching over Lucia. It wasn’t until later that he began to develop feelings for her.
* WalkingSpoiler: His fate and role in the plot fuel a great deal of the third book and other character arcs.

!!Phaedra
Another Watcher and Alexius's friend, who also scouts the mortal world as a hawk.
* BrutalHonesty: She won't hesitate to call Alexius out on any bullshit.
* {{Hypocrite}}: She chides Alexius for falling in love with a mortal, despite falling for one herself.
* ProperlyParanoid: Suspects Melenia of being up to no good. She is completely right, but no one believes her.

!!Timotheus
One of the Elder Watchers, Timotheus is a mentor and friend to Alexius, trying to do what he can to help save the world.
* BigGood: Unlike the other Elders, he is truly concerned with the state of the world, and tries to guide Lucia [[spoiler:and Jonas]] through the steps necessary to save it.
* DeadpanSnarker: When pinned in SnarkToSnarkCombat against Lucia or Jonas, he holds his own.
* LetThemDieHappy: [[spoiler:Why he wipes his other Watchers' memories and sends them to the human world. Kyan's victory is seeming more a certainty by the moment, so he might as well make sure his people die in blissful ignorance.]]
* TheMentor: To Alexius.
* YouCantFightFate: Believes that [[spoiler:Lucia's death, one way or the other, is inevitable.]] Jonas tells him to shove it.

!!Melenia
One of the Elder Watchers, a stunning, smiling woman who seems to have the Sanctuary dancing in the palm of her hand.
* AlasPoorVillain: [[spoiler:Lucia initially refuses to feel pity for her when she dies by her love’s hands, but later on can’t help but feel a little bad.]]
* AmbitionIsEvil: [[spoiler:Like Valoria and Cleiona, she desired the power of the Kindred for herself, and led them against Eva. Melenia [[KnowWhenToFoldEm backed out]] when she saw how the Kindred corrupted the sisters, but was still pleased to find herself one of the few remaining senior Watchers. Ever since, she's steadily been cultivating power.]]
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Presents herself as kindly and wise, but in reality Melenia is a smug and self-centered manipulator.
* GirlOfMyDreams: How she visits King Gaius.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Her inability to care about what happens to people other than herself [[spoiler:caused everything that went wrong with the series. Melenia always goes after what she wants, whether it be power, the Kindred, or freeing her lover, and damn the repercussions for everyone else.]]
* LoveMakesYouEvil: [[spoiler:She fell in love with Kyan, and has been working all this time to free him.]]
* TheManBehindTheMan: [[spoiler:She is, directly or indirectly, behind almost everything that has gone wrong in the series. She’s helped Valoria and Cleiona kill Eva, empowered Gaius, freed Kyan, and put Alexius under a fatal {{Geas}}.]]
* ManipulativeBitch: She knows exactly what to say to get Gaius to work with her, as well as the other Watchers.
* MeaningfulName: ‘Melenia’ sounds a lot like ‘millenia’, and as an immortal that’s exactly how long she’s existed.
* WalkingSpoiler: Her past and goals are all intrinsically tied to the plot, so going in-depth about her without giving anything away is difficult.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Claims to be working for the greater good of the Watchers. [[spoiler:In reality, she only cares about reuniting with her lover again.]]

!!Olivia
A Watcher who appears in the latter half of the series, assigned by Timotheus to watch over Jonas.
* BodyguardingABadass: Not that being a Watcher is something to sneeze at, but Jonas is pretty capable himself.
* CowardlyLion: She's too scared to really do much, but will intervene for Jonas when she has to. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, this courage doesn't hold in the face of Kyan, whom she crumbles before.]]
* DemonicPossession: [[spoiler:Becomes the host for the earth Kindred in the fifth book.]]
* LastOfHisKind: [[spoiler:Is the only Watcher who has all her memories and powers, by the end of the series.]]
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: She prioritizes her orders to Timotheus above all else, saying she's perfectly willing to let everyone else die if it means protecting Jonas.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Spoiler Character]]
!! Kyan
[[LivingMacGuffin The fire Kindred]], who breaks free from his prison halfway through the series.

* BlueAndOrangeMorality: As Timotheus points out, he does not share the same morality as others; he burns and destroys because it's his nature as the fire Kindred.
* TheComicallySerious: There’s a few moments, such as his completely sincere (but, to Lucia, overdramatic) delight at the soup he’s drinking. Then again, a couple thousand years imprisoned would make even the blandest food seem wonderful.
* EldritchAbomination: His true form is a towering, massive being of pure fire.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Genuinely loves and wants to free his siblings.

* KnightTemplar: He wants to destroy the world because, as far as he's concerned, [[HumansAreBastards people are terrible, greedy, selfish, and bloodthirsty]]--the only way peace will ''ever'' exist is without them, and nothing anyone says will convince him otherwise.
* ManipulativeBastard: [[spoiler:Lucia thought he was completely genuine about only wanting to free his siblings. [[LittleDidIKnow LLittle did she know]], he was yet another person using her, this time by playing off her sympathy for [[SealedEvilInACan his situation]].]]
