!!Main Protagonists
[[folder:Susan Ashworth]]
!!Susan Ashworth
The protagonist of the game and the titular "Cat Lady". A bitter, depressed woman who attempts suicide, only to be brought back to life and told to [[SerialKillerKiller murder five "Parasites"]].
----
* AntiHero: She's really not a bad person, but she's bitter and antisocial. She isn't even actually trying to tangle with the Parasites, but they just won't leave her alone.
* BewareTheQuietOnes: Can be very soft spoken and quiet at times. That being said, do NOT get on her bad side. The parasites, as well as [[spoiler: her JerkAss neighbor Brian]] learned the hard way.
* BigDamnHeroes: To the poor girl held captive by the First Parasite. [[spoiler:Unless of course you decide to [[VideoGameCrueltyPotential escape the complex without killing Doctor X]], leaving him able to [[KarmaHoudini continue his work]] and kill the woman]].
* BrokenBird
* CharacterDevelopment: Over the course of the game, she slowly starts overcoming her depression, opening up to Mitzi, and taking control of her life. [[spoiler: In the end, she still has a long way to go (and she will probably never ''beat'' her depression), but she's much better off.]]
* CrazyCatLady: Subverted. People only see her as this, whereas in reality Susan is just an ordinary woman who happens to invite cats to her home whenever she feels lonely, and she gives them the choice of staying inside or leaving rather than force them.
** KindHeartedCatLover: Not at first. It's only until she learns to overcome her depression over time.
* CynicismCatalyst: The reason why she is so bitter and depressed? [[spoiler: She had a daughter at one time, when she was young, who tragically died from a rare pollen allergy when the pollen from Susan's flowers swarmed her room and caused her to suffocate. Susan and her husband Eric were having a huge fallout outside their daughter's room, and they failed to notice that their child was dying. Soon after, her husband left and killed himself.]]
* {{Determinator}}: Culminates near the ending, where she can refuse the Queen of Maggot’s help and resurrect without exchanging a life under her own power. The only explanation is she was just too stubborn to die.
* DoomedByCanon: She makes an appearance in the ''VideoGame/Downfall2009'' remake, the ending of which is chronologically set after ''The Cat Lady''. [[spoiler: In the end, she is either brutally murdered by Joe Davis after trying to save Ivy, axed in the back by Ivy, or revealed to descend into the Eye Of Adam's madness and start motivating other people to kill themselves. However, in the case of the "killed by Ivy" ending, a newspaper clipping reveals that she somehow survived the attack.]]
* DrivenToSuicide: She overdoses on sleeping pills as soon as the story begins. She succeeds in taking her own life... for a short while.
* HappilyFailedSuicide: Ultimately so, but it takes a long time before things start looking even remotely happy for her.
* HiddenDepths: She used to be nurse, and appears to have an interest in art and music, and is quite talented with playing the piano.
* InformedAttractiveness: Telling Doctor X that she wishes she was more attractive results in him telling her she's a beautiful woman, even listing her best features which aren't easy to discern on the sprite. (See also: SoBeautifulItsACurse below).
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Even right at the beginning of the game where Susan is at her lowest, she's not entirely standoffish around others. She bonds with a young nurse named Liz and becomes grief-stricken upon witnessing [[spoiler: her suicide]]. This trait becomes more and more prominent as she continues to bond with her newest friend Mitzi, who helps Susan to learn how to trust other people again.
* MeaningfulName: Susan, which ultimately comes from the Hebrew word for [[spoiler: "lily" or "rose"]]. Also, Susan's [[spoiler: daughter, Zoe, whose name means "life" in Greek]].
** Ashworth is also the name of one of England's three high security psychiatric hospitals.
* MessianicArchetype
* NotQuiteDead:
** Par the course when you're immortal. Even if she is killed, she returns to life shortly afterwards.
** In the ''VideoGame/Downfall2009'' remake, [[spoiler: Susan is axed in the back by Ivy in the GoldenEnding and left to bleed to death on the ground. However, the ending newspaper clipping makes it clear that she survived the events. Whether it was because she still has her immortality abilities or because the game was mostly seen [[ThroughTheEyesOfMadness through Joe's eyes]] is left unclear.]]
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: [[spoiler:Her and Eric's baby daughter Zoe died due to being allergic to the flower pollen in her room.]]
* ResurrectiveImmortality: Thanks to the Queen of Maggots, whenever she dies, she comes back shortly after. She learns to use this to her advantage at several points. [[spoiler: After rejecting the Queen, she loses this ability -- though the ''Downfall'' remake puts this in question.]]
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: Susan getting killed by the First Parasite, [[spoiler:Doctor Xavier Zelmann]], enrages her. The utter betrayal shown after she [[spoiler:opened herself up and discussed her vulnerabilities to the senior psychiatrist]] led her to seek the parasite's death more earnestly than any other parasite. She makes it clear that while it's NothingPersonal to the parasite, it's ''[[ItsPersonal very much personal]]'' to her.
--> '''Susan:''' You treacherous dirty bastard!!! I opened my heart to you... and you stabbed me to death in cold blood!!! You'll pay for this, I swear you will!
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: An option you're given in Chapter 2 if you answered all of Liz's questions correctly. [[spoiler: When you find her corpse, you can find the key to Doctor X's facility in her pocket, allowing you to escape forever - [[KarmaHoudini and allowing Doctor X to continue his work and resulting in the death of his current victim]].]]
* SerialKillerKiller: What she unwittingly becomes after the Queen of Maggots brings her back.
* SoBeautifulItsACurse: [[HollywoodHomely She's not exactly what you'd call beautiful]], but apparently she's attractive enough to bring unwanted interest from people like [[spoiler: the first and the second Parasites and her adulterous date from the flashback]]. In all those cases, let's just say, it doesn't end well for her.
** SheCleansUpNicely: In the beginning, Susan appears to be very dishevelled and elderly, which is justified since she cares little about her looks and had just tried to commit suicide recently. But as she is able to change in a new set of clothes after her ordeals, she appears younger and more reasonably attractive.
* SourOutsideSadInside: Susan's not exactly the nicest person inside her apartment building, and she's very prone to using bitter comments or sarcasm against others. In reality, she's suffering from depression over her grief of losing [[spoiler: her daughter and husband]], and having been let down by others once too many times, she adamantly refuses to open up to others for fear of treachery. It's only when Mitzi introduces herself as her lodger is when Susan starts to overcome this flaw.
* TookALevelInBadass:
** After encountering and getting killed by the First Parasite, she went from being in despair and lacking motivation to being absolutely determined and inspired to take revenge in retaliation for what was done to her and the countless victims and madness left in the wake.
** At the end of Chapter 4, [[spoiler: she poisons the Second Parasite with DeadlyGas, then dons his gas mask, picks up his shotgun, strides back through the mansion, and blows his wife (the Third Parasite) away.]]
* WhatBeautifulEyes: Her green eyes are the only thing she likes about herself. [[SoBeautifulItsACurse Unfortunately, she's not the only one]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mitzi Hunt]]
!!Mitzi Hunt
A young woman who Susan meets in Chapter 4. She becomes Susan's lodger and her only true friend.
----
* BadBadActing: When she tries to pull off being a babysitter while looking for The Eye Of Adam.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: While she's one of the most compassionate people in the story, she's not afraid to speak her mind and shows no tolerance towards bullies. [[spoiler: Throughout the story, Mitzi spends the remaining time she has left to live to hunt down The Eye of Adam, the man responsible for goading her boyfriend Jack to commit suicide over the news of her terminal illness. Upon finally confronting him in his apartment at the end of the story, Mitzi pulls out a gun she smuggled and threatens to shoot him dead, even if the shot would cause the apartment to explode due to the oxygen tanks leaking.]]
* BrokenBird: Like Susan, Mitzi has gone through some terrible ordeals in her life. Unlike Susan though, Mitzi hides her inner sadness with her optimism and compassion for others.
* BullyHunter: She despises bullies, especially online trolls. This is why she is hunting The Eye of Adam, who brainwashes people and coerces them into killing themselves. [[spoiler: Her boyfriend was one of his victims after he took the news of her cancer badly, fell into depression, and stumbled upon his website.]]
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: She only ever had eyes for Jack, whom she grew up with. The feeling was mutual.
* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: [[spoiler:Her mother died long before the story takes place.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler: Mitzi's mother passed away early in her life, where she was then taken into an orphanage, as her family had wanted nothing to do with her. Since then, it's implied that she grew up as a small-time criminal as she had learned to pick locks, until she met Jack who gave her the "perfect love" she desperately needed. After settling down with Jack, Mitzi would then be diagnosed with a brain tumour, sending Jack into a depressive downward spiral that lead to his suicide. Mitzi would then spend the rest of her time left hunting down The Eye of Adam, the man who pushed her boyfriend to suicide, and kill him]].
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Mitzi is essentially the second most important character in the story, and is also the most involved in the final chapter of the story where her and Susan confronts [[spoiler: fifth and final parasite, The Eye of Adam]].
* {{Expy}}: Her look is said to be inspired by a girl from Music/PorcupineTree's music video for [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZiHTvtB118&playnext=1&list=PL3B6A10C68C34A013&feature=results_video ''Way Out Of Here'']].
* TheLostLenore: [[spoiler: Her boyfriend, Jack, was DrivenToSuicide by the Eye Of Adam]].
* TheManyDeathsOfYou: [[spoiler: Can die in several ways. She either suffocates in a gas attack caused by The Eye of Adam if Susan puts on the only gas mask, dies in an explosion caused by an oxygen tank leakage if she shoots The Eye of Adam, or succumbs to cancer if the player fails to meet the requirements to achieve the GoldenEnding. Keeping her alive in the end is notoriously hard to achieve. However, WordOfGod is that succumbing to cancer was meant to be her canon fate.]]
** Her canon fate is actually muddied by the ''Downfall'' remake, [[spoiler: which sees her pop up with Susan at the end no matter what the outcome is. The way the story is set makes it clear that this takes place some time after the Eye Of Adam's death, but she looks no worse for wear and is still in high spirits.]]
* MasterOfUnlocking: Inherited by her expert locksmith father.
* MeaningfulName: Mitzi is a German name that means "bitterness", which seems like an IronicName due to her up-beat and kind nature, until you consider her backstory and [[spoiler: her desire to kill The Eye of Adam]]. Her last name Hunt is also very appropriate, as [[spoiler: she is 'hunting' down The Eye of Adam]].
* NiceGirl: One of the most compassionate characters Susan meets, who cares deeply for her new friend and hopes to help her overcome depression.
* PerkyGoth: Subverted. Her style leans to dark, and she's plenty chipper, but she rejects being labelled as part of any sub-culture.
* RedHerring: Chapter 4 introduces her as a kind and understanding individual [[spoiler: much like how the First Parasite, Doctor X, was in his introduction]]. Then, just as Susan is about to decide whether Mitzi can be her lodger, the Queen of Maggots materialises behind Mitzi and ominously gives her a kiss. Shortly after Susan's outburst about this, it's then revealed that the Queen of Maggots didn't appear to proclaim that Mitzi is the Parasite she's after, but because she has given Mitzi a "kiss of death". In other words, she's dying of a terminal illness.
* SecretlyDying: Is dying of cancer. Her final duty before her time is up is to locate The Eye of Adam, the one responsible for [[spoiler: pushing her boyfriend to commit suicide after he'd fallen into depression over her cancer, and kill him.]]
* StepfordSmiler: As the story progresses, it becomes clear that Mitzi's optimism and light-hearted nature is a facade to hide her [[spoiler: anger and vengeful desire to avenge the death of her boyfriend]].
* SuicidePact: [[spoiler: Her boyfriend Jack tried to persuade Mitzi into creating a suicide pact with him after discovering her terminal disease that would kill her in less than a year, and set up a plan for them to die in a car full of gas. When she refused, he held up his end of the pact]].
* SupremeChef: At least when it comes to pancakes.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Becomes notably more aggressive and rude in Chapter 6 when tracking someone down in the apartment complex, which is surprisingly out-of-character for someone as kind-hearted as Mitzi. [[spoiler: Considering that the Eye of Adam is responsible for driving her boyfriend to suicide, it's not surprising that Mitzi is feeling more impatient and vengeful the closer she gets to her boyfriend's killer]].
* YouKilledMyFather: [[spoiler: She is hunting the Eye Of Adam to avenge her boyfriend.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder: The Cats]]
!! The Cats
Susan's cats are the only friends she had before and during her suicide. They care deeply about her, despite being strays, and have important roles in the main storyline.
----
* ActionPet: [[spoiler: They are instrumental in freeing her from the Second Parasite's grasp and killing the Fourth Parasite.]]
* CatsAreMean: Zig-zagged. While they really care for Susan, averting the usual portrait of cats as egoists in most western media, they also show to be dangerous to the point of [[spoiler: eating the Fourth Parasite ''alive'']].
* KillerRabbit: [[spoiler: The Fourth Parasite found this out the hard way.]]
* HeroicDog: The cat version of this.
* ImAHumanitarian: [[spoiler: They kill and eat the Fourth Parasite.]]
* LoyalAnimalCompanion: Will follow Susan anywhere, even [[spoiler: in the depths of a cannibalistic pest control worker's home]] when she's in trouble. They were heard by Mitzi to be crying and howling out in sorrow when Susan killed herself, and they were even there for her when she did the deed, especially Teacup, just so she wouldn't be alone. [[spoiler: And as the Fourth Parasite discovers, Susan's cats are more than willing to kill if it means protecting their master.]]
* MusicSoothesTheSavageBeast: They come calling whenever Susan plays that piano.
* TeamPet: Goes without saying.
[[/folder]]

!!The Parasites '''**SPOILER CHARACTERS**'''
[[folder:Parasites In General]]
Five vile murderers the Queen of Maggots forces Susan to hunt down and take out after her resurrection.
----
* ArcVillain: Each Parasite is the BigBad of their respective chapter, though the Eye Of Adam's influence is felt from Chapter 4 onward.
* AxCrazy: The particular brand and degree of sanity varies, but none of them are in their right minds.
* BigBadEnsemble: There are the primary threats of the game, and with the exception of [[spoiler: the Second and Third Parasites, who are a couple]], they are all unrelated to each other.
* SerialKiller: They all count as this. The Eye Of Adam is more of a serial suicide-inducer, but he is still considered this.
* WalkingSpoiler: The reveal of a Parasite is a big surprise.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The First Parasite]]
!!Doctor Xavier Zelmann / Doctor X
The psychiatrist who cares for Susan after her suicide attempt. However, he is actually a sadistic SerialKiller who makes victims of his fellow staff and patients, takes them in body bags into a hidden facility in an abandoned part of the hospital, and tortures and murders them with the goal of [[MadArtist recreating pieces of Renaissance-era art with their corpses]]. He is the first parasite, encountered during Chapter 2.
----
* BeardOfEvil: He's got a Sigmund Freud-like beard and happens to also be a sadistic serial killer.
* CreateYourOwnHero: Had he simply let Susan go in the first place, given that her version of Liz's death does not at all coroborate with how Zelmann killed her anyways or even implicate him in any way, he could've kept going on with his sadistic and depraved killings and "art portrayals", the evidence of which would've ultimately been buried when that part of the hospital gets demolished. Instead, his paranoia causes him to have her KilledToUpholdTheMasquerade, which bites him in the ass when it turns out she's immortal and now seeks revenge against him.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: If Susan uses the makeshift spear to kill him rather than the mace, he's impaled through the neck.
* KarmaHoudini: If you answered all of Liz's questions correctly, you'll find a key in her pocket that gives you the option to escape the building, with X still alive. Eventually, that part of the hospital will be demolished, and all the evidence of X's sadism will be buried.
* KarmicDeath: If Susan kills him, he is either ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice or struck by a saw-blade mace.
* LovesTheSoundOfScreaming: And actually wears a blindfold while tormenting a victim so as to better concentrate on the sound.
* MadArtist: Recreated several pieces of Renaissance-era art with the bodies of his victims and compares a woman's screams to "poetry without words".
* MadDoctor: Doctor Xavier Zelmann, [=PhD=]. His degree is on the wall of his office. Quite good at his work, as evidenced with his discussion with Susan. Also an insane killer who enjoys listening to the sounds of women's screams and then recreating Renaissance-era art with the bodies of his victims, comprised of patients and staff at the Cedar Lake Hospital.
* NothingPersonal: He tells Susan that he would have let her go [[KilledToUpholdTheMasquerade if it wasn't for Liz]].
* ObviouslyEvil: Most players pin him as the First Parasite upon his introduction.
* PsychoPsychologist: He's a psychologist who happens to also be a serial killer who likes torturing women. In a twist, he only uses his profession to scout out potential victims and doesn't utilize the sessions themselves explicitly to make them vulnerable, as he's actually shown doing his job properly with Susan.
* SoftSpokenSadist: He speaks with a soft voice and enjoys tormenting young women, something he learned to do as a psychiatrist.
* VillainHasAPoint: He's a genuinely proficient therapist, and his sessions with Susan actually help her. It doesn't change the fact that he's a depraved murderer.
* WickedCultured: Has stated that all art should be appreciated, no matter how it is created, and has a taste for Renaissance-era art. He enjoys it enough to try and recreate several pieces of art with the corpses of his victims.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Second Parasite]]
!!Pest Control Man
An [[NoNameGiven unnamed]] man working as a pest control worker. He works in tandem with his wife Gladys, who is the third Parasite, to abduct, torture, and [[ImAHumanitarian eat]] innocent people. He and his wife are encountered in Chapter 4.
----
* ExtremeDoormat: Implied. He appears to do everything his wife asks him, up to and including putting his gas mask in his van like she asks him.
* GunNut: Owns a collection of guns. He leaves his favourite pistol behind for Susan to kill herself after she is blinded, not knowing that she is functionally immortal and can come back with her sight intact. His shotgun is also taken from him by Susan after his death and used to kill his wife.
* HenpeckedHusband: Though her love for him seems genuine in a twisted way, his wife seems to be the more dominating person in their relationship.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Susan uses his pesticide to create a DeadlyGas with which she poisons him, and she wears his gas mask to protect herself while she does it.
* ImAHumanitarian: Just like his wife, he is a cannibal.
* KarmicDeath: Susan fills his room with [[DeadlyGas toxic gas]].
* KickTheDog: He leaves his pistol for Susan to kill herself after Gladys blinds her, but purposefully leaves it just out of reach.
* MalevolentMaskedMan: While wearing his gas mask.
* NearRapeExperience: He assaults and nearly rapes Susan before his wife bursts in. Disturbingly, Gladys takes this is a seduction attempt on Susan's part.
* NotQuiteDead: When Susan walks into his gas-filled room, he briefly rises from the ground and grapples with her for his gun. She knocks him down, and he immediately succumbs thereafter.
* UnholyMatrimony: He and his wife are very much in love, and they're both depraved cannibals.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Third Parasite]]
!!Gladys
A disturbed, controlling housewife and cannibalistic serial killer. She is married to the Second Parasite, and they are both encountered in Chapter 4.
----
* AllThereInTheManual: Unlike her husband, her name, Gladys, is stated in the game's end credits.
* DullSurprise: Despite Susan being supposed to be blind or dead at the time, the wife seems rather unsurprised to see her walking about, not that it helps Susan's case.
--> '''Gladys''': Look what the cat's dragged in... Again.
* {{Expy}}: According to WordOfGod, her character is intended as a reference to Nurse Edna from ''VideoGame/ManiacMansion''.
* ImAHumanitarian: Like her husband, she is a cannibal. She takes the more proactive role in this, killing and butchering the victims her husband drags in.
* KarmicDeath: Susan shoots her in the chest with [[ShotgunsAreJustBetter her husband's shotgun]] after she ambushes Susan in the yard.
* LarynxDissonance: She's voice by a man trying to imitate a female voice... and it shows, making her even more creepy.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: Unlike every other human character, she has constantly bloodied skin that looks almost decayed, and she walks with a distinct ZombieGait.
* UnholyMatrimony: She and her husband are very much in love, and they're both depraved cannibals.
* {{Yandere}}: Sees any women speaking with her husband and assumes they're trying to seduce him. She's violently protective of their relationship. When she thinks Susan tried to seduce her husband, she pours bleach in her eyes.
* ZombieGait: She walks around in a very strange and disturbing way.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Fourth Parasite]]
!!The Carpenter
Unlike every other parasite, nothing is known about this man. He shows up at Susan's door in Chapter 5 with flowers, then bashes her and Mitzi in the head with a hammer and duct tapes them both in the bathtub with the intent to hang Mitzi and force Susan to play the piano.

----
* CutsceneBoss: Susan doesn't have to do anything for him to wind up dead.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Heavily implied to be Susan's stalker, who sent her flowers once a week.
* IfICantHaveYou: If he was Susan's stalker as is possibly implied, he most likely visited Susan's flat for the purpose of murdering her for rejecting his love.
* KarmicDeath: Susan's cats kill and eat him.
* NoNameGiven: However, he is referred to by Remigiusz Michalski as the "Carpenter".
* OutsideContextProblem / DiabolusExNihilo: Unlike every other Parasite, he has no clear ties to the story, simply showing up at Susan's door at random and taking her and Mitzi hostage for nebulous purposes. He might be Susan's stalker, but this is never determined.
* SelfDisposingVillain: Forcing Susan to play the piano attracts her cats, which attack and kill him.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Nothing is concretely known about him and his arc is the shortest of all the Parasites, but his actions give Susan the presence of mind to finally fill Mitzi (and the audience) in on [[CynicismCatalyst her past]], and the encounter firmly solidifies Mitzi as Susan's best friend.
** Moreover, if he is Susan's stalker as it is implied, then his habit of sending her flowers every week makes him the indirect cause of Zoey's death, Eric's suicide and Susan's depression.
* TheUnfought: Unlike every other Parasite, he is not directly hurt by Susan or Mitzi; instead, while the women are both in danger, Susan's cats jump out of nowhere and tear him to pieces.
* TheUnintelligible: He only communicates by screaming/roaring, as if incapable of real speech.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: If he was the stalker, he sending flowers to Susan is what indirectly caused her daughter's death, the point where Susan's life went downhill.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Fifth Parasite / The Eye Of Adam]]
!!The Eye of Adam / Adam

The fifth and last parasite, encountered in Chapter 7. A spiteful person who tempts people into suicide using an Internet forum, he relies completely on his father to take care of him as his body is completely paralyzed except for his eyeball. Using a computer controlled by his eye movements, he is able to communicate and control various things in his apartment. He convinced Mitzi's boyfriend Jack, who was devastated when he heard of her cancer, to commit suicide by inhaling hydrogen sulfide. Though he failed to convince her to do so with him, Jack killed himself in his car. This led Mitzi to devote her last months of life to hunting him down.
----
* AndIMustScream: His fate after being disconnected from his computers and presumably being sent to a nursing home for the rest of his life.
* BigBad: More from Mitzi's perspective than Susan's, as his connection with her is more personal, as he is the one that caused Mitzi's boyfriend to commit suicide out of grief upon discovering that his girlfriend is terminally ill.
* CruelMercy: Should Susan stop Mitzi from killing him and prevent the room from exploding, they leave him alone without any more assistance due to his only living relative being dead, and it is assumed that he is taken away into a nursing home under constant surveillance, where he will never see a computer screen again.
* DeathSeeker: He leads Mitzi to his apartment so that she can kill him. However, [[TakingYouWithMe he isn't planning on dying alone]].
* EvilCripple: Is completely paralyzed, leaving him incapable of doing anything except moving his eyeball in order to use an eyepiece that directly controls the computer.
* FateWorseThanDeath: He suffers this if Susan convinces Mitzi to spare him. See CruelMercy.
* ForTheEvulz: He drives people to suicide because he just wants everyone to die.
* ManipulativeBastard: His MO is convincing people to kill themselves.
* MeaningfulName: Because he is paralyzed, his eye is all that is left of him, thus the name 'The Eye of Adam'.
* NeverHurtAnInnocent: Instructs his victims on ways to end their lives while ensuring that nobody else will get hurt in the process. It's not clear if this is out of principle, or simply to [[PragmaticVillainy avoid drawing attention to himself]]. Mitzi implies that this just part of his ideology, knowing his victim died willingly.
* {{Patricide}}: He floods the apartment with [[DeadlyGas toxic gas]], killing his father. This comes back to bite him if he fails to convince Mitzi to kill him and set off a leaking oxygen gas that will also kill her as well.
* StrikeMeDown: He spends his entire "conversation" with Mitzi ordering her to pull the trigger.
* TakingYouWithMe: Taunts Mitzi into pulling the trigger on him, which would result in the room going up in flames due the gas leak, thus allowing him to get the last laugh. It's up to Susan whether she goes through with this or not.
* {{Troll}}: He takes pleasure in pushing people into killing themselves, very much like how an internet troll would continuously torment others for their own amusement. This is what motivates Mitzi into seeking him out and confronting him in person. Even with a gun aimed at his face, he continues to goad Mitzi into killing him while ensuring that Mitzi's shooting him dead would result in her death as well.
* WalkingSpoiler: As the final Parasite and the subject of Mitzi's entire character arc, he is ironically this even more so than the regular Parasites.
[[/folder]]

!!Other Characters
[[folder:The Queen of Maggots]]
!!The Queen of Maggots
A mysterious old woman who appears in the afterlife to grant Susan ResurrectiveImmortality in exchange for becoming her executioner. She also appears in ''VideoGame/Downfall2009'' and ''VideoGame/{{Lorelai}}''.
----
* AGodIAmNot: She describes herself being as powerful ''as'' gods, never claiming to be one herself. She also explicitly says that she is ''not'' Death, and that she's dead just like Susan.
* AmbiguouslyEvil: On one hand, she seems to have genuine sympathy for Susan. On the other hand, Susan identifies her as [[spoiler: the voice of depression in her life]], and she doesn't deny it. On the gripping hand, the quest she gives Susan, and her actions in ''VideoGame/Downfall2009'' seem to imply she has a distaste for murderers. On some kind of fourth hand, the immortality she grants Susan comes at the cost of other people's lives. Some of the people were going to die anyway, but still...
* AnthropomorphicPersonification: [[spoiler: It's heavily hinted at that she's depression incarnate. Susan, at least, comes to this conclusion in the end. In Lorelai, the Queen reveals that she was born out of darkness to burrow her tunnels deep in the wicked human hearts, technically making her the embodiment of evil and depression.]]
* BlackAndGreyMorality: Dark, dark, ''dark'' Grey to the Parasites' Black, if it's not outright EvilVersusEvil.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: While recruiting Susan as her personal vanquisher of Parasites whether she likes it or not, she demands her to stand up for herself to instill the right mind-set to be her personal hitman. The player can choose to have Susan oblige...by standing up to The Queen of Maggots herself and defy her wishes in every step of the way. [[spoiler: This becomes a crucial point later on as continuously defying The Queen of Maggots is what leads the player closer towards the best ending in the game, provided that all other key choices are made as well]].
* IHaveManyNames: She doesn't much care what the living call her, but there's one sobriquet she's particularly fond of.
* {{Jerkass}}: Though she initially appears to be comforting and understanding to Susan's plight, she's also shown to be cruel and spiteful to keep her in line, often inappropriately reminding Susan of the terrible things in her life, even gleefully asking whether it was fair that [[spoiler: Susan's daughter passed away due to a rare pollen allergy while Susan and her husband were having an argument outside her bedroom]].
* KickTheDog: She often delights in making Susan miserable to prove a point, especially when she nearly tricks Susan into thinking that Mitzi is a murderous Parasite in their first meeting.
* ManipulativeBastard: [[spoiler: She is the one who actually pulling the strings of depression on the mortal realm, playing dreadful games of destiny and tricking humans into it.]]
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Especially when she emphasizes the fact that maggots feed on the dead. Not something that's going to put a newly dead person at ease. [[spoiler: Subverted in ''Downfall'', assuming she's telling Agnes the truth about her true name being Lorelai, which Agnes instead finds "pretty". "Lorelai" is also the name of Harvester's upcoming game, the final entry in the "Devil Came Through Here" game trilogy so far comprised of ''Downfall'' and ''The Cat Lady''.]]
* OurDemonsAreDifferent: She looks exactly like an old human lady, albeit creepy and ghostly. [[spoiler: Her true form is actually a gigantic monster with huge maggot-like tentacles, snacking dead corpses.]]
* {{Psychopomp}}: While she claims not to be the personification of death, she at least has some power over the threshold between worlds. There's also her sudden appearance behind Mitzi, who is dying of cancer. It might have been an attempt to freak Susan out, or it might have just been a result of Mitzi's ''proximity'' to the realm of the dead.
* SatanicArchetype: A ruler of an unpleasant afterworld, she grants you immortality in exchange for the sacrifices of human souls and given you the task of killing evil psychopathic murderers and manipulating the lives of depressed people. [[spoiler: She is in fact the Devil herself, or at least the closet equivalent to it.]]
* ToxicFriendInfluence: She ''presents'' herself as Susan's ally, and maybe she even believes that she is. Nonetheless, her warped worldview and sadism cause her to lead Susan to some very nasty (and excruciatingly painful) situations.
* UnexplainedAccent[=/=]WhatTheHellIsThatAccent: For bonus points, the accent disappears whenever she's calming Susan down.
* VillainProtagonist: In the new game ''VideoGame/{{Lorelai}}'', you will play as a young woman with a red flower on her hairs who named Lorelai. She is believed to be the Queen of Maggots herself before she get screwed up.
** Averted: it turns out the Lorelai controlled by the player is a different person and yet another victim of the Queen of Maggots. [[spoiler:Although she tells Lorelai that she plans to turn her into the next Queen of Maggots and, near the end of the game, she does appear to Lorelai looking just like her. However, since she's associated with depression, her using Lorelai's appearance could be simply an indication that part of her will always live on within Lorelai.]]
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Though it's not entirely clear why she brings back Susan to life for the purpose of becoming her executioner, and is rather intent in making sure that Susan follows her role by granting her immortality whether Susan wants it or not, she does seem to want to see the Parasites punished for their sins.

[[folder:Eric]]
!!Eric
Susan's ex-husband. [[spoiler:In his only appearance during a flashback, his [[{{Jerkass}} jerkassery]] inadvertently caused the death of his and Susan's child.]]
----
* TheAlcoholic: Is a frequent drinker, and [[spoiler: drank himself to death over the loss of his daughter.]]
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler: After his daughter's death.]]
* GreenEyedMonster: Is implied to be jealous of his daughter Zoey over how Susan pays more attention to tending to the baby's needs than her husband. [[spoiler: It's his jealousy that causes him to stop Susan from checking up on their daughter in the middle of their argument, which accidentally stops Susan from noticing how their daughter was slowly dying from a rare pollen allergy from the flowers left in her room]].
* HateSink: He's certainly not winning husband-of-the-year awards anytime soon, considering his treatment of Susan and his implied jealousy of his daughter.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Criticizes his wife for not being supportive enough to her husband's needs, and considers Susan to be 'lazy' due to not making enough time for both their daughter and her husband after work hours.
* {{Jerkass}}: One of the most unpleasant characters in the game, and he isn't even one of the main antagonists.
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: [[spoiler:His and Susan's baby daughter Zoe died due to being allergic to the flower pollen in her room.]]
* PosthumousCharacter: [[spoiler: He died months before the game's start.]]
* StayInTheKitchen: He seems to have this mindset, even with Susan already being a stay-at-home mother, as some of his arguments during the big fight descend to "not having dinner ready for him when he gets home" levels.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Liz]]
!!Liz
Elizabeth, also known as Liz, is a nurse at the Cedar Lake Hospital who watches over Susan during her recovery from her attempted suicide. A very talkative person who often gets carried away in conversations, she dislikes the hospital because she feels trapped there.

----
* DeadAllAlong: [[spoiler: Hard to tell how long, exactly; when Susan finds her corpse, it seems she's been dead since before her apparent suicide, but by that point Susan's been drugged up so often that the passage of time is uncertain. It also interesting to point out that Susan ask of Liz to the hospital staff, and they don't seem to know her at all, aside from Doctor X for some reason...]]
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler: Jumps off the roof of the hospital in front of Susan, regardless of how well she tries to convince Liz not to.]]
* GenkiGirl: She's very friendly and animated. [[spoiler:It's all an act. She's actually severely depressed.]]
* NaughtyNurseOutfit: Tried it once for her boyfriend, but neither of them were really into it.
* SpiritAdvisor: [[MaybeMagicMaybeMundane Possibly.]] [[spoiler:She has been dead for a while by the time her corpse is found, but she appeared to Susan trying to warn her about someone wanting to hurt her. As she was already dead at that time, she may have been referring to Doctor X, and if Susan answered all of her questions correctly she has a key to the facility exit in her pocket, possibly [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere her intending for Susan to escape and leave forever]].]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Bryan]]
!!Bryan
A neighbour in Flat 6. He detests Susan with a passion.
----
* ButtMonkey: In the Cat Widow segment, he finally gets put through the wringer by Susan.
* HairTriggerTemper: A simple short piano melody in the middle of the night is enough to send him down to Susan's door and shout at her for waking him up. It's also implied by Susan that Bryan has anger issues and usually use whatever excuse he finds to shout at people, no matter how small.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Angrily calls out Susan for waking him up in the middle of the night when she plays the piano to call her cats over for company. He also doesn't seem to care that he is disturbing the other neighbours by shouting at Susan in the middle of the night, and seems more concerned about getting even with Susan.
* {{Irony}}: Calls Susan a 'nutcase' at one point, while completely oblivious to the fact that [[spoiler: he has been living on the same floor as The Eye of Adam, a dangerous Parasite who has been goading many victims to commit suicide on suicide help forums]].
* {{Jerkass}}: One of the meanest people in the game who isn't a sadistic killer. He's introduced by harshly scolding Susan for playing the piano in the middle of the night, which accidentally woke him up. He goes as far as to threaten to call pest control to get rid of her friends, and throws one final insult at her even if Susan tries to be apologetic to him. His treatment of Susan is so harsh, he can cause Susan to undergo an emotional breakdown if she is already too stressed out beforehand.
* LaserGuidedKarma: The comeuppance he gets in the "Legend of the Cat Widow" scene is a thing of beauty.
* PornStash: After invading his flat, Mitzi mentions that there was a lot of pornography on his laptop.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: He calls up [[spoiler: the Second Parasite]] when he makes good on his threat to call Pest Control on Susan and her cats, resulting in [[spoiler: Susan's kidnapping.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Old Man]]
!!Old Man
An kind yet eccentric elderly man who lives in Flat 5. [[spoiler:He is actually faking his dementia and is the father of The Eye of Adam.]]
----
* TheAtoner: Is deeply ashamed of [[spoiler: what his son has become, and wants to set things right by helping Susan and Mitzi confront his son.]]
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Has dementia, and tends to be an oddball at times. [[spoiler: Subverted, it's an act.]]
* [[EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas Even Bad Men Love Their Papas]]: [[spoiler: Inverted. Until the very end of the game, he was taking care of his son and providing everything he needed, even knowing he's a serial killer. Although, he probably did it more because of fear than because of love.]]
* EvilOldFolks: [[spoiler: Is assumed to be The Eye of Adam, or in cahoots with him, but it turns out to be subverted. See TheAtoner.]]
* TemptingFate: [[spoiler: Assumes that his son would not kill his own father due to how much his father helped him due to his condition. Tragically, he's wrong.]]
* RamblingOldManMonologue: Tends to go off on monologues about his wife at times. [[spoiler: He's just trying to distract Susan and Mitzi.]]
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: [[spoiler: He finally gets up the nerve to stop helping his son, and it costs him his life as his son has him killed for his betrayal.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Joe Davis]]
!!Joe Davis

A mentally unstable man who lives across from Susan with his wife Ivy. [[PreviousPlayerCharacterCameo The main protagonist of]] ''VideoGame/Downfall2009''.
----
* AxCrazy: Obviously, given that he'll eventually [[spoiler: go on a murderous rampage.]]
* BoomHeadshot: [[spoiler: How he kills Susan in the hotel sequence.]]
* KarmaHoudini: He receives no punishment for his actions in this game, at least. In fact, in the ''VideoGame/Downfall2009'' remake, [[spoiler: he only gets killed in the non-canon negative ending -- both others see him on the run with Ivy, whether she's alive and grateful (the GoldenEnding) or dead and rotting (neutral).]]
* PreviousPlayerCharacterCameo: You play as him in ''VideoGame/Downfall2009''.
* RedHerring: [[spoiler: His interactions with Susan imply that he is one of the parasites, but he isn't... at least not in this game.]]
* RoomFullOfCrazy: His apartment is creepily lit and contains a shattered mirror, a knob-less door painted with the NumberOfTheBeast, and a bathroom with a mannequin in the tub.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Pauline]]
!! Pauline
A young mother who lives in Flat 8.
----
* NiceGirl: Is one of the few residents who doesn't detest Susan and is generally pleasant towards her.
* {{Unperson}}: As far as she's concerned, her child has no father; he's been cut out of every family photograph.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Jesse]]
!! Jesse
A young man who lives in Flat 7.
----
* NiceGuy: Is one of the few residents who doesn't detest Susan and is generally pleasant towards her. He even volunteers to buy a new cable and fusebox for the apartment during a black out, reassuring Pauline everything should be fine tonight.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Rita]]
!!Rita Tickle
A member of a babysitting agency sent to Pauline's apartment to care for her baby. She interferes with Susan and Mitzi's search of Pauline's apartment [[spoiler: during the hunt for The Eye Of Adam]].
----
* HateSink: Stubborn, [[{{Jerkass}} rude]], has an obnoxious voice, and holds that anybody who puts a baby up for adoption is going to Hell. There's not much about Rita that isn't meant to make you detest her.
* SpannerInTheWorks: A mild case; she interferes with Susan and Mitzi's plan, but not a degree that it doesn't ultimately work.
