[[header:The Mortal Sins]]

[[folder:The Sins in General]]
Seven Demon Lords that rule over Hell, each one representing a specific sin. Besides guarding the circles of Hell, they often go to Earth to seduce humans into becoming their followers, falling into sin and dooming their own souls to Hell when they die.
----
* AffablyEvil: Most of them are actually rather pleasant outside of the whole "corrupt humans" thing. Asmodeus and Belphegor can be especially friendly (perhaps fittingly, they are also the most hedonistic and unapologetic among the Demon Lords).
* ALighterShadeOfGrey: The Mortal Sins are portrayed as this when compared to [[spoiler:[[LightIsNotGood God and the Heavenly Virtues]], who have lost their hope on this world and decided that it's better to just destroy it and create another. Yes, most of the Sins have been happily condemning their followers to Hell for what is implied to be centuries, but when they are not doing that they can be quite friendly and even noble, so leaving them to rule the world sounds like a much better option than total annihilation.]]
* BadSamaritan: A classic example. They offer to humans the greatest pleasures of the world, and make little speeches about how the way of living they preach will make them happier, but all they want is to corrupt human souls and condemn them to hell. The exceptions are [[TokenGoodTeammate Astaroth and Beelzebub]], the former only wanting to enjoy singing, and the latter really wants to see people happy with delicious food.
* BatmanCanBreatheInSpace: The fight between Satan and Lucifer shows that Demon Lords can use their magic to breathe in space.
* CombatStilettos: Belphegor and Beelzebub are the only Sins that don’t wear high heels. The ones that do wear don’t see any need to change shoes before a fight.
* TheCorrupter: This is the job description of a Demon Lord. They come to Earth, seduce as many humans as possible with their respective sins and thus get them into a contract to send their souls to hell after they die.
* CuteMonsterGirl: They are all Demon Lords who are almost identical to humans and very attractive.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Downplayed with most of the Demon Lords. They corrupt humans and doom their souls to hell, yeah, but when they are not doing their “jobs” they can show many noble traits and even perform some good deeds. [[TokenGoodTeammate Beelzebub]] play this trope completely straight.
* DevilInPlainSight: They fit this trope to a ''T''. They are demons who walk around among humans. While it's revealed they use their magic to keep their horns from being noticed, they don't even bother hiding their real names.
* EmbodimentOfVice: As their titles employ, each Demon Lord acts as the arbiter of their respective sins. They are chosen because they embody such sins in their behavior and when on Earth they encourage them in humans and [[EmotionEater are even implied to grow stronger from them]].
* EvenEvilHasStandards: None of the Sins seems to share Belial's enthusiasm about torture. [[spoiler:They weren't too thrilled to hear about God's plan to erase Earth and Hell either.]]
* GenderFlip: While their namesakes are sometimes portrayed as inhuman things, they are almost always referred to as male.
* HotAsHell: All of them are extremely attractive in a buxomly curvaceous way, (except for [[TokenMiniMoe Beelzebub]], who is still absolutely cute). Asmodeus especially makes full use of her gorgeous looks to gather followers.
* HornedHumanoid: All Demon Lords have one or two horns, which signify their demonhood, and Lucifer grows her own not long after falling to Hell.
* LaughablyEvil: It's hard not to get a laugh out of their silly antics. [[PsychopathicManchild Leviathan]] and [[LazyBum Belphegor]] especially.
* MsFanservice: The Sins are scantily-clad women, most of whom are very buxom and are often shown getting their clothes ripped. Special mention goes to Mammon, Lucifer and Asmodeus.
* PointyEars: With the exception of Belphegor, they all have this.
* PunchClockVillain: Most of the Sins are basically just trying to fulfill their roles to gain followers to corrupt. When they are not doing that, they can show some decency and genuinely admirable traits, being AffablyEvil at worst.
* SheIsTheKing: They are called "Demon Lords" despite being all women.
* {{Stripperific}}: Many of them wear very little clothing. And the ones that do have cloth that covers most of the bodies leave just enough skin exposed to fit this trope. [[TokenWholesome Beelzebub]] is the only one among the seven that does neither.

[[folder:Lucifer]]
!! Lucifer
-> '''Voiced by''': Creator/EriKitamura (Japanese), Creator/YumiHara (Japanese, ''X-TASY'') Nicole Endicott (English)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lucifer_3.jpg]]

->''"Pride is specifically pride because it does not yield to others."''

The main character and the sin of {{Pride}}. She was expelled from heaven and now intends to become the ruler of Hell.
----
* TheAce: Strong enough to effortless kick the ass of the strongest Demon Lord in Hell (before her magic gets sealed anyway), a huge {{Determinator}} who just won’t back down on a challenge, and also a charismatic leader who quickly inspires defeated enemies to join her side. She can also be quite cunning when her pride doesn’t lead her to underestimate her opponents.
* AntiHero: Technically, despite not considering herself as good, Lucifer did more good than bad when facing the Mortal Sins.[[spoiler:Not to mention that the God she opposed to plans to do something much worse than anything she did.]]
* AppropriatedAppellation: Seemingly the reason why she chose to become the Demon Lord of Pride. Michael, Belial and even God all claimed she was too prideful, so she could as well play along.
* BadassBoast: She doles these out like candy, but most notably? "I'm the best there is. The strongest in all of Hell. The Demon Lord of Pride: Lucifer!"
* BeatThemAtTheirOwnGame: She has a policy of fighting her opponents on their own turf:
** That's how she defeats Asmodeus. Rather than trying to fight the aphrodisiac of the demon lord of Lust herself, she embraces its effects to enhance her own sex appeal until Asmodeus is feeling so much lust she gets embarrassed when she looks at Lucifer.
** After discovering Astaroth has been making a name for herself as a singer, Lucifer decides she will "defeat" her by becoming a singer herself and stealing Astaroth's own fans.
** Her fight with Belphegor is a literal application of this trope. When the Demon Lord of Sloth challenges her to settle the score in a video-game she created, Lucifer immediately accepts.
** As soon as she meets Beelzebub she challenges her to an eating contest. Unlike her previous battles, this one ends in a tie when both of them get gastric problems.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: While she doesn't admit it, at least out loud, she gives Maria an "angel's blessing" when the two first meet because Maria's first instinct was to render aid when Lucifer crashed into the church, bloody, without asking anything in return. [[spoiler:It's also implied that Lucifer was slowly falling in love with her for this reason. Later it's revealed that their meeting was no accident at all as Lucifer had always known Maria had always been a lifelong devout devotee of hers in particular since childhood, ever since Maria had been taught by her mother that Lucifer was always on their (humanity’s) side. Maria always regularly prayed to Lucifer as if she was her very own Guardian Angel/BFF, and Lucifer had eventually and inevitably become “captivated” by Maria, and empathetic and understanding to the rest of humanity as a result]].
* BerserkButton: Lucifer does not react well when you imply something is beyond her ability.
* BreakTheHaughty: Her character arc is a long one for her. While still very arrogant, she becomes much nicer after episode 7.
* BroughtDownToBadass: At the end of the first episode Belial inflicts Lucifer with a curse that will eventually kill her. Doesn't stop Lucifer from having her former strength. [[spoiler:The last episode reveals that was actually the second time Lucifer got hit with this trope. As the former leader of the Seven Lively Virtues, she used to have the "Light Wings", with each of its six feathers holding as much power as one of the Virtues. They were taken from her when she rebelled against God, bringing her down from WorldsStrongestWoman to "just" Badass.]]
* ButForMeItWasTuesday: [[spoiler:Lucifer never recognized Belial as the same angel Satanael she personally banished from Heaven centuries ago under the orders of God until the fallen angel in question spells it out for her. This doesn't surprise Belial in the slightest, as she states that Lucifer has always been like that.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: Her interactions with the kinder Demon Lords, coupled with Maria’s general kindness and Levi’s devotion to her, lead her to become less self-centered and [[TookALevelInKindness more willing to do good things to others without any self-interest]]. She finishes the series as haughty as she ever was, but also more compassionate to the people around her.
* ChickMagnet: Let's see… Leviathan is completely obsessed with her, Asmodeus also quickly took a sexual interest in her, [[spoiler:Michael turns out to have a [[PsychoLesbian strange thing]] for her, and the finale heavily implies that Maria returns her feelings.]] And this is all before the ''X-TASY'' game, which features many girls developing an interest in Lucifer during their Kizuna Quests. Yup, she fits.
* ControlFreak: At least for the early part of the story, she has to be the one in charge, and has a tendency to micro-manage everything.
* DarkActionGirl: The strongest fighter in the cast, and a powerful demon lord.
* DeadpanSnarker: She has a very sharp tongue. This trait is emphasized in the dub.
* DefectorFromDecadence: [[spoiler:In their final confrontation, Lucifer reveals to Michael that she no longer regrets her banishment from Heaven nor resents Michael for doing the deed, and Lucifer is in fact even ''grateful'' to Michael, as she has now found, for her, "the best friends a girl could have" in the other Demon Lords (even the ones she defeated) who are passionate free spirits who remain true to themselves and their own feelings, instead of all of the other angels, who have become, in her view, grovelling sycophants who hypocritically repress themselves in order to appease, placate and curry favor with God.]]
* DefrostingIceQueen: A cold, haughty fallen angel at first. Lucifer eventually grows to appreciate those around her more, respects the other Mortal Sins-sans Belial- as worthy followers and allies, and genuinely falls in love with Maria, reserving her warmth for her.
* {{Determinator}}: As part of her immense pride, Lucifer will never, ever give up or falter in the path she's chosen.
* DramaPreservingHandicap: Lucifer is much stronger than any of the Sins, so she is inflicted with a curse that severely weakens her to prevent her from simply overwhelming them with raw power. Instead, she now must defeat the Sins one by one in their domains to remove the curse.
* TheDriver: Despite being ''very'' proud, she's not above driving her minions around herself.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: Doesn't understand why Maria [[IJustWantToBeNormal wouldn’t be happy with the immortality she granted her]]. Or at least doesn’t care. Subverted when she later apologizes to Maria for dragging her along.
* EvilIsPetty: When Maria implies that Lucifer can't sing a pop song, Lucifer takes it as a challenge...exactly as Maria intended.
* FallenAngel: Well, duh. A GenderFlip she may be, but Lucifer is still Lucifer.
* FamedInStory: Everybody knows who she is, at least among the non-humans. She seemingly wasn't aware of this, as she was openly surprised when Leviathan recognized her on sight. [[spoiler:The last episode reveals that she was also famous among humans, as unlike her mythological counterpart she only fell down in modern times, and thus people actually got to know and worship her as an archangel.]]
* FriendlyEnemy: With Astaroth and Beelzebub. By the end of the series, Lucifer obtained the respect of all Mortal Sins sans Belial, but her relationship with those two is notable because they were already acting cordially and respectfully with each other before their "fights" were over. It may have something to do with [[TokenGoodTeammate those two being the nicest of the Mortal Sins]], as Lucifer is also shown to have a soft spot for the equally nice [[MoralityPet Maria]].
* GetOut: PlayedForLaughs. She says this to Maria and Leviathan after being subjected to a rather humiliating suppository. She may have tried to sound pissed, but between her self-loathing monologue and her shaking voice, she ended up looking frail instead. Regardless, Maria and Levi respect her privacy and leave.
* GoodAllAlong: Subjective but... [[spoiler:she was against God's plan to purge Hell and Earth, so she isn't without morals at least. Though even when taking into account this reveal and her CharacterDevelopment, she is still an AntiHero and an example of GoodIsNotNice at best.]]
* GoodIsNotNice: She may have become a much nicer person by the end of the series, but that doesn't mean she stopped being a haughty SmugSuper, nor does it mean that she will share her newfound kindness with everyone, as Belial found out.
* GiantPoofySleeves: Which, alongside her tiara, gives her a royal, "always dignified" look. Until she inevitably suffers ClothingDamage, of course.
* TheHedonist: Not as much as Asmodeus but Lucifer states she wants to enjoy the best the human world has to offer. Out of the gate she wants to stay in a presidential suite in a hotel and wants the best food. When Leviathan states in episode 2 using her powers would have been faster than taking an airplane, Lucifer states she is flying on a plane because it's more fun.
* HiddenDepths: Being banished from Heaven affected her more than she lets on. [[spoiler:Her monologue in episode 5 implies she is suffering a mild identity crisis now that she has lost the position of archangel she had for her entire life, and has developed an InferioritySuperiorityComplex as a result.]]
* HiddenHeartOfGold: It takes a ''lot'' to get to it, but Lucifer has a lot of positive qualities deep down and actively places saving Maria above her own safety.
* HonorBeforeReason: When Mammon trapped her on a BDSM wooden horse torture device, she refused Leviathan's help because she wanted to prove that she could escape with her own power.
* HumansAreFlawed: [[spoiler:Revealed in episode 12 that Lucifer believes in this. This is the reason why she was against God purging Earth when He decided He wasn't happy with the way humans had become and was cast out of Heaven for it.]]
* HumblePie: Is hit with this big time in episode 7. Being hospitalized means having to rely on others, something she would never do in other circumstances. However, this experience that she initially considered to be humiliating brings great results when Lucifer finally overcomes her own pride and apologizes to Maria for always dragging her into trouble. Being in such a situation also raised her empathy for people weaker than her, as seen in her subsequent interactions with Leviathan and Beelzebub.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Declares humans deserve to get thrown in Hell because of their weakness, yet the very same thing happened to her due to her own weakness (pride).
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: [[spoiler:The monologue she has when remembering her banishment in episode 5 more or less confirms that she has a mild case of this, implying that her obsession with winning at everything comes from her fear of being proven to be wrong.]]
* InformedAbility: When she's challenging Asteroth to a singing contest, Leviathan and Maria both talk up how great Lucifer's singing ability is, but all her singing is fairly basic with heavy use of AutoTune.
* ImmuneToBullets: Bullets bounce off her in her fight with Satan.
* InsistentTerminology: In the second half of episode one and most of episode 2, Lucifer's quite vocally and strongly had to correct and inform Maria that she's a Demon Lord, and responds with hostility when addressed any other way.
* InstantExpert: Lucifer has a tendency to master whatever she sets her mind to in short order.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: More so a straight up JerkAss in early episodes. She gradually develops into a nicer person who won't indulge in the same KickTheDog moments she did at the start and actually show some kindness. But make no mistake, learning kindness does little to quell her massive ego.
* KickTheDog:
** Episode 2 has her invite Maria to swim with her. When Maria refuses to take her clothes off, Lucifer takes control of her body and [[ShamefulStrip makes her strip]]. In the same episode, after Maria states she doesn't want the eternal life Lucifer is granting, she hammers in that Maria has no say in what happens to her and is stuck following Lucifer.
** [[spoiler:In episode 4, Lucifer not only thoroughly beats up Mammon in physical combat, she also spitefully burns down her London HQ immediately afterwards while Mammon helplessly watches in grief as it is filled with countless priceless antiques. Possibly subverted as it was necessary to free Mammon’s followers from being trapped forever in a pocket dimension as the hypnotized babysitters to her babies. In episode 11, Lucifer on her own insistently tries to free the other demon lords from Belial's tortures, ''except for Belphegor'', who she dismissively ignores and callously abandons despite Belphegor's desperate begging. Possibly subverted as Lucifer claims it's actually for her own [[ForYourOwnGood good]] to endure her ordeal because she thinks that Belphegor needs to lose weight.]]
* LapPillow: Combined with AffectionateGestureToTheHead. The OP shows Lucifer having Maria's head on her lap and stroking it gently with genuine affection. Despite the fact that they're both nude, it's seen as quite adorable as it advertises intimacy, not lust.
* LetsGetDangerous: Not that she wasn’t fighting seriously before, but [[spoiler:after Maria sacrificed herself to revive her, Lucifer went all out on Michael to avenge her]].
* LimaSyndrome: She steals Maria's heart ([[BeatStillMyHeart literally]]) at the start of the series and essentially uses it as a hostage to force Maria to follow her around. Yet as the series goes she develops feelings for the human girl. [[spoiler:Subverted a bit when the last episode reveals that Lucifer already knew who Maria was before they even met because Maria was always praying for her. So her interest in the girl started before the kidnapping.]]
* LustObject: For Leviathan, who was licking her lips seconds after meeting Lucifer.
* MoralityPet: Maria becomes someone who brings out Lucifer's nicer side and better qualities.
* MySpeciesDothProtestTooMuch: Why she got ejected out of Heaven and ended up in Hell, to begin with. She has come to really hate other angels for blindly following God's every order.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: When she lets Leviathan share her hospital bed, in a moment of sympathy for her self-proclaimed lover, Leviathan wets it. [[spoiler:When she protests God's decision to purge Hell and Earth, she gets chained up and sent plummeting to Cocytus, the lowest level of hell.]] Small wonder she's jaded and acerbic.
* NoSympathy: As far as Lucifer is concerned, humans only get seduced by the sins of the Demon Lords because their hearts are too weak. [[spoiler:{{Subverted|Trope}} as the final episode reveals that she still loves humanity in spite of their flaws. She may not think highly of most of them, but she still thinks that they don't deserve to die because of their sins.]]
* NotEvilJustMisunderstood:
** Lucifer holds this opinion towards the idea of sin in general, pointing out how sex without love is not inherently bad and she questions how gluttony can be a sin when eating is such a basic act of survival.
** This trope can also apply to Lucifer herself. She starts out with a SugarAndIcePersonality who holds herself with arrogant {{Pride}}, but she is shown to have many PetTheDog moments towards Maria, can be cordial and even friendly to her enemies and [[spoiler:was banished from Heaven because she doesn't want God to destroy humanity, having began her war with Hell so that she could recruit the Demon Lords into stopping God.]]
* NotSoAboveItAll: For all Lucifer's haughtiness, she has a tendency to occasionally lapse into the same silliness and fun as everyone else, especially when she becomes an idol singer to combat Astaroth.
* TheOjou: While she is not one in the literal sense of the word, her bio in the ''X-TASY'' game directly compares her to this archetype due to her haughty personality, as well as her "naivety" that makes it really easy to get to her good side by stroking her ego a bit.
* OneeSama: Leviathan starts treating her as this almost immediately after meeting her, much to Lucifer's initial dismay.
* ParentalSubstitute: [[spoiler:In a sense, Lucifer was this to Maria who always diligently prayed to her, even after her mother died. This was what inspired her to rebel against God when he decided to purge humanity.]]
* {{Pride}}: While this is portrayed as a possible weakness early in the series (her UnderestimatingBadassery during her first confrontation with the Mortal Sins), Lucifer's high opinion of herself is also her greatest strength, as it refuses to allow her to accept second best and [[{{Determinator}} drives her to never give up]].
* ProudBeauty: She is the Demon Lord of Pride who is HotAsHell. Do the math.
* PunchClockHero: She didn't have any intention of helping humans, but each time she defeats a Demon Lord, their followers are freed from their control.
* RebelliousPrincess: Technically speaking, as the former First Among Angels and ex-leader of the Seven Lively Virtues, she's the closest thing to one that Heaven had.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Her eyes are red and she's doubtless very dangerous.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Has no problems showing off her body. She does, however, have a problem with being touched without permission, though Leviathan never learns her lesson.
* StatuesqueStunner: Her height is 5'7.
* ShowerScene: Gets one in episode 2, which besides filling the {{Fanservice}} quota also shows the effects of Belial's curse.
* SmugSuper: Lucifer is just as smug as you would expect of the demon that represents Pride, but she certainly has the power to back up her claims.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Ice cold and aloof usually, but she can start demonstrating genuine kindness and sweetness to those in her inner circle, ''especially'' Maria.
* TearsOfBlood: She begins crying them during the final confrontation with Michael, grieving for [[spoiler:Maria's sacrifice]]. These turn out to have the full religious symbolism: [[spoiler:they are the last of her original Angel Blood, which allow Maria to be resurrected]].
* ThisIsGonnaSuck: How she reacts to Leviathan offering to cook dinner. To her surprise she actually likes it.
* TookALevelInKindness: After spending some time with Maria and interacting with some of the [[TokenGoodTeammate nicest of the Mortal Sins]], Lucifer starts treating others better. In the span of a single episode, she admits to Maria that she is grateful for all her help, develops a genuine friendship with Beelzebub (complete with Lucifer giving her an AffectionateNickname), and even indulges Leviathan a bit by sleeping on the same bed with her. Maria even lampshades how strange it is of her to suddenly act so kindly. [[spoiler:This is also retroactive when she alone of all the angels stood up to God and Heaven to protect humanity from the planned purge.]]
* UnderestimatingBadassery: By her own admission, she "let her guard down" around the Mortal Sins in episode 1, and wound up paying the price for it.
* UnreliableNarrator: Well, she is Lucifer after all. [[spoiler:The very first scene in the series has her monologuing about how unfair her exile is, and among other things, she insults Michael for backstabbing her in the first opportunity she got. When we get to see Lucifer’s rebellion in the final episode we see that Michael was trying to stop her from rebelling with a rather concerned expression. Also, while Michael was indeed smiling when Lucifer fell, she totally misunderstood the meaning of the smile.]]
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: As revealed in episode 11 [[spoiler:she booted out an angel named Satanael under God's orders for giving humans false hope, but never bothered to explain the reasons to her. If she did, Satanael probably wouldn’t have taken the name Belial and plotted an elaborate scheme to return to Heaven.]]
* VillainousValor: As afforded as the sin of Pride, Lucifer has several noble traits, mainly her determination, and unbreakable will of steel. But the "villainous" part doesn't last long, as her CharacterDevelopment changes her into more of an AntiHero, albeit she remains highly acerbic and cocky.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler: Late in the series it's revealed she was trying to prevent humanity and Hell from being destroyed. But she will go to some extreme lengths to do it.]]
* WhereDoesHeGetAllThoseWonderfulToys: She is somehow able to afford an indefinite stay in a hotel penthouse suite, a private jet, and rent luxurious vehicles without any source of income. Small wonder Maria is baffled.
* YouCanSeeMe: She asks this word by word in her first meeting with Maria, because normal humans shouldn’t be able to see angels like her.

!! Leviathan
-> '''Voiced by''': Creator/AkaneFujita (Japanese), Creator/BrittanyLauda (English)

->''"You have what Levi wants! I’m jealous of you! I’m envious!"''

A demon and the sin of [[GreenEyedMonster Envy]]. She's the first demon Lucifer meets and becomes her follower almost immediately.
----
* AuthorityInNameOnly: Despite holding the title of Demon lord of Envy, she doesn't become a member of the Seven Mortal Sins till after Lucifer becomes their leader.
* TheBeastmaster: She controls demonic versions of sea creatures like flying whales and giant snails.
* BigBreastPride: She's quite proud of her ample buxom and doesn't hesitate to rub it in Maria's face.
* BilingualBonus: One of the demonic creatures she can summon is a flying whale. “Leviathan” means “Whale” in Hebrew.
* ButtMonkey: Worse than Maria, not that she doesn't deserve. She constantly wants Lucifer's attention and whatever ways she attempts to get it typically end with her getting humiliated.
* ChainmailBikini: [[spoiler:Gains one after Beelzebub awakens her full potential]].
* TheChewToy: Not only she is constantly ignored by Lucifer, every time she tries helping her fight the Mortal Sins she gets humiliated in a new way. In fact, "Leviathan gets the short end of the stick" could be seen as an OnceAnEpisode event.
* ClingyJealousGirl: She's ''[[GreenEyedMonster envy.]]'' She's utterly obsessed with Lucifer to the point of using physical violence against those she perceives as an obstacle to her attention.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: When Lucifer exposes Maria's breasts on the flight to Miami, Leviathan pulls off her own shirt, bragging that her breasts are bigger and better, not realizing that Lucifier was trying to tap into Maria's "angelic blessing" to track down Asmodeus.
* EmbarrassingDampSheets: She still wets her bed, as Lucifer discovers to her chagrin after letting her share her bed.
* EntitledToHaveYou: To Lucifer. No matter how Lucifer turns her down, rebuffs her, or outright spurns her, Leviathan absolutely refuses to take "no" for an answer.
* EpicFail: In episode 3, she attempts to have a pole dancing contest with Asmodeus, only to find she has no idea how to do it. Even naked, she just awkwardly moves around the pole while the audience boos, then eventually falls down and knocks herself out.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: She can be a real bitch towards most people, but she does show her sweet side toward the people she cares about. This includes Lucifer, with whom she fell in love at first sight, as well as Behemoth, who she loves very much and trusts as well. [[spoiler:And despite not liking Maria at first, she does eventually comes to care about her as well at the end of the series.]]
* ExactWords: Lucifer forbids her from harming Maria, so she decides to humiliate her until her mind breaks instead. After that fails Lucifer decides to make it clear that she isn't allowed to do ''anything'' to Maria.
* {{Expy}}: Of [[Anime/QueensBlade Elina]]. Both of them have hopeless feelings for the main characters of their series, and no matter how many times they are rebutted they insist on following them and declaring their love again. And the objects of their affections will sometimes indulge them, even if they don’t love them back (through the same method to boot!). They both also act all sweet when they are alone with their love interest but are total jerks to everybody else, and are huge ClingyJealousGirl, to the point of showing some {{Yandere}} tendencies sometimes. The key difference is that Elina is just as much of a skilled fighter as anybody else in her series and a KarmaHoudini who has never been given any retribution for the things she's done while Leviathan is the ButtMonkey and the number one victim of TheWorfEffect.
* FailureHero: She never wins a fight. At all. Not even against Maria. The closest she comes to winning is her draw in mud wrestling with Astaroth.
* FemmeFatalons: Downplayed. When she encounters the bound and chained Lucifer in Cocytus, one of the first things she does is caress Lucifer's skin, which shows that her fingernails are razor sharp as the caress causes Lucifer to bleed from a very thin, shallow cut.
* ForegoneConclusion: Since Envy replaced Melancholy, it was obvious she would end up replacing Astaroth among the Seven Sins in the series.
* GreenEyedMonster: Very fittingly, since she represents Envy. It doesn't take long for her to get incredibly jealous of the attention Lucifer gives to Maria. Later this is also extended to Beelzebub.
* HandOrObjectUnderwear: The only thing covering her crotch is a Band-Aid. She actually calls it “her panties”, much to Asmodeus’s amusement.
* HiddenDepths: Episode 2 showed that she is actually a skilled cook. Lucifer initially thought Leviathan's cooking looked too bizarre to try but actually liked it when she tried. To Leviathan's annoyance, Maria eats some as well.
* HomeFieldAdvantage: The ocean gives her more water and sea creatures to work with. In spite of this advantage, Asmodeus defeats her with ease. She fares a little better against Satan, but in the end she is still unable to win.
* AnIcePerson: Among her arsenal is the ability to summon and hurl piercing shards of ice.
* JerkassHasAPoint: In episode 4 she warns Maria against touching the things Mammon has laying around. It triggers a trap, which Leviathan then chews her out for.
* KickTheDog: She suggests killing Maria in the second episode, and after seeing Lucifer drag her along, Leviathan attempts to drown her and later tries to assault her, talking about how much pain she will cause on Maria's immortal body.
* LetUsNeverSpeakOfThisAgain: Dresses up as angel in episode 6 in Belphegor's game while guarding an item, for some reason. When she sees Maria she quickly tells her to take the item and never tell anyone about it.
* LoveConfession: Gives one to Lucifer in episode 7. It earns her what is perhaps [[ThrowTheDogABone the first honest display of affection Lucifer has given her]].
* MakingASplash: Her unique ability among the demons is that she can control water.
* MundaneUtility: She uses her control over water to change the pool of the hotel into what looks like an amusement park ride.
* MurderTheHypotenuse: Leviathan's reaction to Lucifer giving any attention to Maria? Attempt to kill her. [[SarcasmMode That's not a totally insane overreaction.]]
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: She ''is'' Lucifer’s personal space.
* TheNudifier: In the first episode, she sprays Lucifer with boiling water that dissolves her original outfit.
* OverShadowedByAwesome: Leviathan manages to demonstrate more than once she does have some impressive powers. But since the Mortal Sins have followers, she loses everytime she picks a fight with them.
* PantyThief: One of the short specials shows Levi going after Lucifer's panties while she bathes.
* PetTheDog: [[spoiler: Surprisingly she tries to talk Maria out of making a HeroicSacrifice and despite her jealousy, and mourns her death afterwords.]]
* PsychoLesbian: For her “OneeSama”. As soon as she meets Lucifer she starts ogling her body and molesting her, despite the fallen angel clearly telling her to stop. Then she attacks her for breaking her mental image of how Lucifer should be. After Lucifer effortlessly blocks her attacks, Levi starts molesting her again, because the fallen angel looked totally cool demonstrating just how strong she is.
* PsychopathicWomanchild: By far the most childish of the Sins. Leviathan’s immaturity and inability to cope when things don’t go her way is what leads her to attempt to MurderTheHypotenuse.
* RankUp: In the finale, she takes Astaroth's place in the Seven Sins.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: She will take off her shirt just because Lucifer said people shouldn't swim with her clothes on.
* SitcomArchNemesis: Leviathan absolutely hates Maria for taking Lucifer's attention from her, but has been forbidden from actually attacking the girl, leading to some really petty touches such as ordering sushi for Lucifer and herself, but not Maria because "you suck!"
* SupremeChef: Not immediately obvious, as the meals she cooks ''look'' hideous, but they're [[TastesBetterThanItLooks actually delicious]] and very easy to consume and digest, even for humans. She can (and does) make her meals with Earth ingredients as well as "hellish" ones.
* TenderTears: [[spoiler:Grives for Maria after she sacrifices herself to revive Lucifer. This becomes TearsOfJoy when Maria is revived.]]
* ThirdPersonPerson: Refers to herself as "Levi".
* ThrowTheDogABone: After six straight episodes being the ButtMonkey, Leviathan finally gets a break when Lucifer allows her to sleep in the same bed as herself.
* TookALevelInBadass: Subverted in Episode 8 [[spoiler:She is knocked out unconscious to the bottom of the ocean by Satan, where she is secretly approached by Beelzebub, who activates her full potential. This awakens her and gives her a dramatic boost in her fighting prowess. But it’s still not enough to defeat Satan, who easily beats her anyway.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: Towards Lucifer. There is nothing Levi won't do for her.
* VitriolicBestBuds: For all the insults and harassment she throws at poor Maria Leviathan does eventually come to care for her, as shown when [[spoiler:she cries when Maria sacrifices herself to save Lucifer and then is brought back to life.]]
** Further shown in the first chapter of the ''X-TASY'' game. She is insulting towards Maria as usual when they are talking at the start, but when Maria is kidnapped and tied up by Belial, she reacts with righteous fury.
* VaporWear: Even if you willing to buy her argument that a Band-Aid over her crotch counts as underwear, she still hits this trope by not wearing a bra, as shown in many scenes through the anime.
* TheWorfEffect: Gets beaten by Asmodeus and later by Satan to establish those two are dangerous before Lucifer battles them.
* WorfHadTheFlu: Despite having an initial advantage in her battles with both Asmodeus and Satan, the two do eventually overpower her by feeding on the sin of their respective followers. In fact, she was ''dominating'' the battle against Satan until the collateral damage pissed people off.
* {{Yandere}}: She was already showing signs of being a PsychoLesbian in the first episode, but it's in episode 2 that the "Psycho" part starts shining. Her first instinct upon discovering Lucifer plans to bring Maria along in their quest is to attempt to kill the poor girl. After Lucifer forbids her from hurting Maria, she spends the entire night trying to get the attention of the fallen angel. It doesn't work, so as soon as Lucifer leaves her alone with Maria she decides to [[LoopholeAbuse humiliate and mentally torture the girl to the point of insanity]]. All while insisting that Maria is at fault for stealing her OneeSama, ''even though Maria was dragged along by Lucifer against her will''.
* YankTheDogsChain: Her LoveConfession in Episode 7 touches Lucifer enough that she allows Leviathan to sleep in the same bed as her. And then [[EmbarrassingDampSheets she wets the bed]]. So close…

The Demon Lord of the sin of Wrath and the first Sin encountered by Lucifer and Leviathan.
----
* AmbiguouslyBrown: Mixed. In the official arts , she’s White-passing like most of the rest of the cast, but in the anime itself, her skintone is of a slightly tanned color that is still noticeably darker than the other demons (except for Belphegor).
* BadassCape: It's so unnecessarily big it looks even more AwesomeButImpractical than usual for this trope.
* BloodKnight: Being the demon that represents Wrath, she really likes fighting.
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: She actually has a soft spot for cute things, like kittens and Beelzebub.
* CutenessProximity: Towards the two stray kittens she found in the seventh ONA special short. And to an extent, towards Beelzebub as well.
* DidNotThinkThisThrough: When she tries to play Santa and deliver presents, she didn't consider how hard it is to fit through a chimney, especially for someone her size.
* EmotionEater: Like Asmodeus, she grows more powerful when people around her feel anger and wrath.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: In "Unleashed Wrath", she is seen outside the Gates of Hell and notices a male soul harassing a female soul. She separates them and lets the woman leave for Heaven while she eviscerates the male soul for raping and killing her. She then [[BigBrotherInstinct heads to Earth to strike down Lucifer when Belial tells her that she has enslaved Beelzebub]].
* EtTuBrute: [[spoiler:She does ''not'' take Belial's betrayal well.]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards: She refused Belial's offer to cut off Lucifer's wings siting that while she may be a BloodKnight, she doesn't enjoy torturing a helpless being. Then again, she did nothing to stop Belial either.
* FashionableAsymmetry: She wears more armor in her right leg than in her left leg.
* FieryRedhead: She is the only redhead of the sins and also the most aggressive of them. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]], as she represents Wrath.
* FriendToAllChildren: The third Blu-ray exclusive Short Special shows Satan playing the role of Santa Claus and trying to give some children their Christmas presents. There isn’t any ploy to gain more followers; she just likes seeing children smiling.
* GateGuardian: She usually guards the Gates of Hell, whom mortal souls pass through.
* GracefulLoser: When defeated by Lucifer, she agrees to open the gates of Hell for her.
* GreenEyedMonster: Gets jealous of the affection Beelzebub has for Lucifer.
* HairTriggerTemper: Her FatalFlaw. Satan may be a NobleDemon, but she has a short temper that often causes her to resort to violence first. This is displayed in her first meeting with Lucifer, where a single snarky comment from the FallenAngel was enough to provoke Satan into a fight. More seriously, after Belial tells her that Lucifer enslaved and humiliated Beelzebub, she immediately gets into UnstoppableRage mode and violently attacks Lucifer without bothering to confirm the story with either her or Beelzebub, who was right there with them.
* HiddenDepths: Her talk with Belial show she believes in the BalanceBetweenGoodAndEvil and that for every ugly thing exists a beautiful one in return.
* HonorBeforeReason: She frees Lucifer of one of the commandments before the climax of their fight, to ensure that Belial’s curse won’t affect the result.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Her battle with Lucifer in episode 8 ends with her stabbed through the gut. She's perfectly fine once the weapon is pulled out, but she admits defeat.
* KindHeartedCatLover: The seventh special short consists of her taking care of two kittens. She becomes so fond of them she can’t even get angry when they ruin her BadassCape. And she is supposed to be the sin of Wrath!
* LargeHam: She is the Sin of Wrath and she gets into a serious situation, she shouts even if she's not angry per say.
* LawOfChromaticSuperiority: Satan has red hair, red clothes, and was the strongest of the sins before Lucifer's arrival.
* NobleDemon: While the other Sins are this to varying degrees, Satan is probably the straightest example of the seven. She's got a strong (maybe ''too'' strong) sense of justice and fairness, has a soft spot for children and cute animals, and has never displayed malice or sadism like her cohorts. If it weren't for her HairTriggerTemper and tendency to be BlindedByRage, she'd be a straight-up good guy.
* PlayingWithFire: Her main power besides brute force is fire.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Her attacks could shatter the ''Earth'' itself had Lucifer not convinced her to fight on the moon.
* {{Satan}}: Except she is not the leader of the sins with Belial in charge.
* SatanIsGood: In case some of [[BruiserWithASoftCenter the]] [[FriendToAllChildren other]] [[NobleDemon tropes]] [[KindHeartedCatLover in this]] entry didn’t clue you in, Satan is actually a very reasonable and noble person. [[spoiler:She didn’t need any convincing to join Lucifer when she revealed that God was planning to purge Earth and Hell, and among the Mortal Sins she is the one most outraged to find out about Belial's betrayal.]]
* StatuesqueStunner: She stands a full six feet, making her the tallest of the cast.
* WorthyOpponent: Satan smiles as she observes the damage the fight with Lucifer left in her weapon, as if she was recalling some fond memories. She clearly enjoyed fighting the fallen angel more than she expected.
* WreckedWeapon: Downplayed, but she is shocked and impressed when Lucifer cracks her axe.

->''"Ah, I can’t get enough of everyone’s lewd eyes looking at me."''

The Demon Lord of the sin of {{Lust}}. She takes an immediate liking to Lucifer.
----
* AttemptedRape: Asmodeus becomes interested in Maria after realizing she wasn’t reacting to her sex appeal at the beach, so she kidnaps the girl and tries to force herself on her. Lucifer stops her before she can take things too far.
* BarelyThereSwimwear: The swimsuit she wears in episode 3 barely covers her private parts.
* BlowYouAway: Among her abilities, she can also summon tornadoes.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: After being bested by Lucifer, she chooses to stop opposing her.
* DepravedBisexual: She enjoys the attention she gets from everyone on the beach and the night club, both male and female. She also takes a liking to both Lucifer and Maria and tries to have her way with them regardless of whether they want it or not.
* EmotionEater: The more humans around her give into lust, the stronger she gets. It's the main reason why she was able to defeat Leviathan who had HomeFieldAdvantage at the time.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Episode 3 shows that she can charm women just as easily as she can charm men. When she arrived at the beach there were many girls angry at her for stealing the attention of every man in the area, but a couple of scenes later the chant repeating her name was composed of both male and female voices. Her bio in the ''X-TASY'' game mentions this trope, saying that she can seduce "men and women, from all ages".
* EveryoneHasStandards: As shown during the "Justice Shines, Magic Sparks" event in the ''X-TASY'' game, Asmodeus will not invite children to the "adult parties" she throws for her followers. Having said that, she is not above the JailbaitWait trope.
* GoneHorriblyRight: The first victim of Lucifer's tendency to BeatThemAtTheirOwnGame: Asmodeus had drugged Lucifer up with a powerful aphrodisiac, so Lucifer simply embraces it, increasing her own sex appeal to the point Asmodeus began to lust after her. In the seventh Blu-ray exclusive Short Special, she forcefully feeds Maria an aphrodisiac so that she won't fight back against her. What follows is another BeatThemAtTheirOwnGame moment that would make Lucifer proud.
* GracefulLoser: She remains composed after being defeated by Lucifer and even wishes her good luck.
* GreenThumb: Has the ability to manifest demonic, [[NaughtyTentacles tentacle-y]] plant life to incapacitate her marks, as Lucifer and Leviathan find out.
* TheHedonist: Being the sin of Lust. She delights in sex and wants to make humans enjoy it as well, seeing it as a natural desire.
* HoistByHerOwnPetard: Ultimately it was her own aphrodisiac that caused her defeat. She thought Lucifer would easily submit after falling to the effects of her "Ultimate Aphrodisiac", but instead she took advantage of its effects to raise her own sex appeal, making ''Asmodeus'' submit when she couldn't stop herself from lusting over Lucifer.
* IHaveYouNowMyPretty: Pulls this twice in the same episode, first to Maria and then to Lucifer. Neither attempt is successful.
* ILoveYouBecauseICantControlYou: Becomes obsessed with making Maria hers when she notices her lust-inducing powers don't affect her. Later becomes infatuated with Lucifer when her pride overpowers her lust.
* TheImmodestOrgasm: When she gets “defeated” by Lucifer and later when [[spoiler:she is being tortured by Belial for her betrayal.]] It seems that the Demon Lord of Lust can’t be modest about anything.
* InterplayOfSexAndViolence: In the final episode, [[spoiler:after Belial launched a borderline suicide attack to destroy one of Michael’s Light Wings, Asmodeus says she is getting wet. The fact that she gropes Michael right before attacking her and then claims that her groans are turning her on seals the deal.]]
* LivingAphrodisiac: Befitting for her position as the Demon Lord of Lust, Asmodeus not only attracts everyone around her with very little effort, but she can also invoke LoveIsInTheAir, making all the people around her fall in love with each other.
* LivingLieDetector: She can know when anyone lies by smelling their pheromones [[spoiler:which is how she knew that Belial was lying about what Heaven is planning to do]].
* TheNudifier: After successfully putting Lucifer under the effects of her "Ultimate Aphrodisiac", Asmodeus binds her body with vines drenched in some sort of acid that melts her clothes.
* ObliviouslyEvil: She is a hedonist who tries to charm every man and woman she meets while proclaiming she is spreading love by encouraging sex. The fact that her followers go to Hell when they die doesn't cross her mind.
* PinkIsErotic: She has pink hair and has Lust as her sin.
* ProudBeauty: She is HotAsHell and knows it. When Lucifer first confronts her at the beach she makes a little speech about how she gets everyone to lust over her with a big smile.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Feeling shame would get in the way of her job of seducing souls through lust. In fact, she admits defeat when Lucifer actually manages to make her feel shame.
* SomethingElseAlsoRises: From what can be seen in the last BD special, her tail stands straight and goes completely stiff when she climaxes.
* StatuesqueStunner: Her height is 5'10.
* TooKinkyToTorture: Belial's final punishment involved Asmodeus being bound and suspended by rope in the nude, Japanese-''Shibari'' style in the middle of a perpetual-motion tornado while having her skin being constantly slashed by gale-force winds (her wounds instantly close-and-open because of her own demonic rapid healing). Along with the obvious pain, it also gave her ''non-stop intense orgasms''.
* {{Underboobs}}: Her outfit prominently show this.
* VaporWear: The {{Underboobs}} in her top makes it clear that she does not wear a bra.
* VillainHasAPoint: Argues that Maria is a CovertPervert after kidnapping her. Maria did in fact look at Asmodeus pole dancing and despite supposedly trying to cover her eyes she was clearly looking through her fingers.
** Lucifer calls her out for believing she is spreading love, since all she is spreading is sex. Asmodeus is offended and asks what is wrong with spreading sex, and Lucifer states that nothing is inheriently wrong with sex.

The Demon Lord of the sin of {{Greed}}. She always seems to try to obtain a profit.
----
* ActionMom: As it turns out, she's not only a powerful Demon Lord....but a mother doing everything for the sake of her children.
* BerserkButton: When you even so much as just scratch any of her precious property.
** She doesn't care for Maria calling her out sending others to care for her children.
* BoobsAndButtPose: Mammon's pose in her official anime artwork.
* BreakingTheFourthWall: In the 4th ONA special, it's revealed that [[spoiler:the real-world series/franchise-owner Hobby Japan also exists in this world, but it's actually run by Mammon in order to make and sell merchandise --- which include the real-world series/franchise merchandise --- to the followers of all nine of the Mortal Sins, including herself.]]
* CleavageWindow: Her outfit comes with a pretty big one.
* DisproportionateRetribution: You broke an expensive piece of stained glass in her property? To the medieval torture room you go!
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: She genuinely loves her children and her obsession with wealth is out of a desire to provide for them.
* ExplosiveBreeder: She has over 500,000 demonic children. Even when taking into account that she is a semi-immortal Demon Lord, this is still a totally absurd number. To put it in perspective: even if she had started around the time human civilization was born, she would still have to give birth to ''more than 20 children each year'' to reach that number in the present day. And seeing how most of her children we get to see are still infants in the present, this isn't very likely.
* FreudianExcuse: She has 500,000 children to look after and her seemingly-late husband was apparently irresponsible enough to leave her with a very huge bill. It sorta makes sense why she would be so... greedy.
* HoistByHerOwnPetard: [[spoiler:After making it clear to Belial that she won't support her anymore and that she has already decided to bet on Lucifer instead, Mammon is cursed by her to be tortured using the same BDSM wooden horse torture device that she used on Lucifer (and which Leviathan also chose to ride) in London.]]
* ImmortalityBisexuality: In the main anime we discover that she married a man and had many [[ExplosiveBreeder children]] with him, but extra material – such as official artwork, as well as the short specials and booklets that come with the Blu-ray - also show her getting intimate with women. As for the "Immortality" part, the Demon Lords have been around for a long time, and as Mammon herself tells Lucifer, they have an eternity ahead of them.
* MarshmallowHell: Does this to Maria.
* MasterPoisoner: Not only poisons but potions of any kind, especially explosives and corrosives.
* MotherOfAThousandYoung: She apparently has spawned ''500,000'' demonic children, [[spoiler:who all appear as adorable human babies to humans, but appear as hideous inanimate cat-eared button-eyed stitch-mouthed charcoal-black sockpuppets to Maria.]]
* MoneyFetish: Only to be expected from the demon lord of the mortal sin of greed. In the aforementioned ONA special, it is revealed that [[spoiler:despite being shown at the end of episode 4 as already becoming a Bitcoin crypto-currency billionaire tycoon (and thus being wealthy enough to never need to work again) she still continues her other money-making activities anyway by secretly being behind all of the extremely popular mass-marketing/merchandising (softcore porn pictures and statues/figurines, etcetera) to the rabid fanbases of all nine of the Mortal Sins, including herself]].
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: In the dub, her voice actress came up with the idea of imitating Creator/ZsaZsaGabor's legendary Eastern/Central-European accent.
* TheNudifier: One of the potions she throws at Lucifer during their fight has this effect.
* OjouRinglets: She has this hairstyle, fitting for a rich woman.
* ParentalNeglect: It's not that Mammon doesn't care for her children, [[spoiler:but at some point, she decided that it would be more convenient (and lucrative) if she hypnotized her human followers to think her babies were theirs, so they would babysit the children for all time while she takes all of their assets. Maria calls her out on this, claiming that even if her circumstances justify being so greedy, she failed to see that being with their mother is what any baby would want first and foremost. The ending of episode 4 implies Mammon took the lesson to heart.]]
* QualityOverQuantity: [[spoiler:In the aforementioned ONA special, it is played straight when it is revealed that Mammon uses only the best quality materials for her merchandise, specifically the statues/figurines of all nine of the Mortal Sins. Subverted in that, she failed to realize it at all beforehand and tearfully regrets it afterwards when she learns that despite selling them all out even with their high prices, she's still financially in the red, so to speak, due to the losses from their manufacture and sale.]]
* RealityWarper: [[spoiler:Mammon traps her followers by hypnosis in a timeless pocket dimension containing her babies' endless nursery, where they do not physically age at all.]]
* ShadyRealEstateAgent: In addition to selling potions, she works as one of these in the human world. Maria reads one of her contracts to find they are a MagicallyBindingContract that condemns the customer to Hell after they die, or rather if they still manage to ever die, as [[spoiler:its shown in episode 4 that her followers do not physically age while in the timeless pocket dimension of her babies' endless nursery, as many of them are clearly hailing from past centuries]] and allows Mammon to immediately seize all of their assets while they are still alive.
* StatuesqueStunner: She stands at 5'11", just one inch below Satan.
* SuperEmpowering: In the 5th BD special, an adventurer gains a power boost after fondling her breasts and her offers her gold for it. She decides to exploit this by making other adventurers pay to draw power from her.

The Demon Lord of the sin of Gluttony. She's always eating despite her petite figure.
----
* ACupAngst: The sixth Blu-ray exclusive Short Special confirms that she is not happy about being the only girl with a small chest in the WorldOfBuxom that is Hell.
* AffectionateNickname: Lucifer calls her “Bub”.
* BerserkButton: Perhaps because she is the youngest (or at least the youngest looking) among the Mortal Sins, she seems to get extremely embarrassed by anything related to sexuality. The only time she was shown as ever getting angry was when Asmodeus was groping a helpless Lucifer in episode 1, which immediately triggers her into knocking ''both of them'' (plus Leviathan) out cold with what appeared to be a giant metal spoon while scolding Asmodeus for being a pervert.
* BigEater: As expected of the Sin of Gluttony. She is almost always seen eating something.
* BreastExpansion: PlayedForLaughs in the sixth BD exclusive Special, where her fellow Demon Lords come with several different methods to make her chest grow... only for the fake breasts to literally ''fall off''.
* EmotionlessGirl: Parodied in one of the short specials. Getting to eat delicious meat makes Beelzebub scream from happiness inside her mind… while outside she maintains the same stoic face she always has. Lucifer is at a loss because she can't tell how Beelzebub feels, but Satan can read her (nonexistent) expressions so well it borders on mind reading.
* ExtremeOmnivore: [[spoiler: She '''eats''' two of the wings of light that Micheal carried.]]
* FriendlyEnemy: She befriends Lucifer scarily fast, even though their eating contest had no winner and thus they were still enemies. Apparently having similar experiences in hospitals and appreciation for food is the best way to become FireForgedFriends.
* HappinessInSlavery: Since Lucifer is nice to her and feeds her, being her slave is a nice arrangement for her. When Satan is misled into believing Lucifer kidnapped her, Beelzebub tells her that she's happy and doesn't want to leave.
* HorrorHunger: Although she does actively enjoy the taste of food, and the act of eating, the fact that she's frequently suffering from gastric issues is due to ''always starving'' no matter how much she eats, as she confides to Lucifer while the two are neighbors in the hospital.
* NervesOfSteel: She gets flustered by Asmodeus' lustful behavior and is visibly shocked when Lucifer challenged her to an eating contest (due to her gastric problems), but outside of those two instances she is always stoic and composed, no matter how destructive the fights of the other Demon Lords become. In fact, she seems to get ''calmer'' during action scenes.
* NiceGirl: She's surprisingly the nicest of the Sins, and even bonds with Lucifer when they're hospitalized together.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Turns out she isn't immune to having gastric problems, despite her love for eating.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: Implied. She's strong enough to knock out both Leviathan and Asmodeus, the latter being a full-grown Demon Lord, with what looks like a giant spoon.
* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: Zigzagged in regards to her position as the Demon Lord of Gluttony. Unlike the other Demon Lords, she doesn't really embody her sin, a fact that Lucifer comments on. She likes food, but she is satisfied with simple meals like the ones served in hospitals, and seemingly doesn’t have any desire for excess. One of her comments implies she got her position due to her HorrorHunger, which is something she can’t control. On the other hand, she is technically doing her job of spreading the sin of Gluttony among humans, even if she doesn’t have any ill will towards them.
* SlaveCollar: Lucifer sometimes leads her on a leash, at least in the figure line.
* SuperEmpowering: [[spoiler:She has the secret capability to awaken the full potential power of her fellow demons through spellchanting and kissing their foreheads.]]
* ThousandYardStare: Parodied in a BD special, where she gets this kind of look while [[ACupAngst staring at the breasts of the more well-endowed Demon Lords]].
* TokenGoodTeammate: Alongside Astaroth, she is the least villainous of the Mortal Sins. She doesn't really care about spreading the sin of Gluttony, she just wants people to eat delicious food and be happy for it.
* TokenMiniMoe: The smallest of the sins, and also the only character in this WorldOfBuxom to have a flat chest.
* TokenWholesome: Unlike the other Sins, she doesn’t wear a {{Stripperific}} outfit nor does she gets a {{Fanservice}} scene in her focus episode. She does get involved in a couple of {{Fanservice}} scenes in later episodes and specials, but she still doesn't have the same amount of MaleGaze the other Mortal Sins do. She's also shown as being extremely scandalized by Asmodeus's sexual harassment of Lucifer in episode 1.

The Demon Lord of the sin of {{Sloth}}. She's mostly seen browsing in her tablet.
----
* AffectionateNickname: Astaroth calls her Belphe.
* BrilliantButLazy: Unsurprising for the Lord of Sloth, but she's smart enough to create a game world to gather followers.
* EpicFlail: The weapon she uses to attack Lucifer.
* FantasticArousal: As shown in her first Kizuna Quest in the ''X-TASY'' game, her tail is very sensitive.
* FriendlyEnemy: In the ''Anime/SevenHeavenlyVirtues'' SpinOff, she turns out to be friends with her Heavenly opposite, Sandalphon. When the angel needs advice, she contacts Belphegor online for a brainstorming session.
* GamerChick: She loves video-games. So much that her throne in Pandemonium has become surrounded by piles of game boxes, much to Belial’s displeasure. She has even found a way to gather more followers through games.
* LaboriousLaziness: About the only thing that can get Belphegor moving is the prospect of becoming more comfortable, and she will go to frankly incredible lengths to that end: one of the specials has her going out to buy a bottle of sake she wanted to try because she didn't want to wait for delivery, and then travelling halfway across town to find sakura trees to drink it under, and ''then'' personally catching a humongous fish to make sashimi to go with it. The last scene is her zonked out beneath the sakura trees, happy as a clam.
* LazyBum: Being the Demon Lord of Sloth, Belphegor not only is one, but she also tempts people into joining her slothful lifestyle.
* LittleBitBeastly: Unlike her fellow Sins, Belphegor is more animalistic in appearance, with animal-like ears rather than PointedEars and a fur-covered tail instead of a standard-issue devilish pointed tail.
* NavelDeepNeckline: Due to her shirt being completely unbuttoned except for a single button in the middle. And she [[VaporWear isn't wearing a bra under it]].
* TheNicknamer: She has a nickname for everyone. Maria is “Maririn”, Lucifer is “Lucy”, Astaroth is “Astaro”, the list goes on.
* TheNudifier: With her godlike control over her game world, she makes Lucifer and Maria's clothes disappear at different times.
* OddFriendship: It's revealed in the ''Anime/SevenHeavenlyVirtues'' SpinOff that she and Sandalphon, the angel that represents the virtue opposite to her, are in friendly terms.
* PrehensileTail: She uses her tail as an extra limb, and it is even tipped by a three-fingered claw.
* RageQuit: Implied. At the end of episode 6 Belphegor claims that she has grown tired of games, which is actually believable, as she is the Demon Lord that embodies the sin of Sloth. But given that was right after her plans to defeat Lucifer in her game world completely failed, one can’t help but wonder if that is really the only reason.
* RealityWarper: She can create pocket dimensions, which she passes off to humans as online MMORPG game worlds, where she's effectively the resident goddess. With that being said, her reality warping powers seem to be quite limited, as Lucifer was able to defeat her in a physical fight while in the game and she later had Maria go through a TrainingMontage rather than simply using her powers to make her stronger. Presumably, even she has to follow certain rules of the game.
* ScrewThisImOutOfHere: She skips town when Maria and Lucifer damage her game world.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: The reason why she's half-dressed is that even the act of putting on clothes is too much work for her, and she comments that maybe she should just go naked to save her the trouble.
* ShockAndAwe: She can fire lightning blasts.
* TrashOfTheTitans: When we see her in her personal room in the BD specials, she is surrounded by piles of game boxes, discarded clothes and snacks.
* VaporWear: She clearly isn’t wearing a bra.
* VillainousFriendship: Belphegor has a genuine friendship with Astaroth, to the point of encouraging her to perform on stage in spite of her severe social anxiety and stage fright.
* YuriFan: In the fourth Blu-ray exclusive Short Special Astaroth finds a Yuri [[HGame Eroge]] among the piles of games in Belphegor's room.

[[header:The Former Sins]]

[[folder:The Former Sins in General]]
Two Demon Lords that were part of the Seven Mortal Sins at the start of the series, but ultimately ([[ForegoneConclusion and inevitably]]) lost their positions to Lucifer and Leviathan.

Please note that most tropes that apply to the current Mortal Sins also apply to those two during the time they were part of the group unless specified otherwise.
----
* AdaptationalBackstoryChange: Since they were created after the original seven in the figure line, the explanation given for the presence of two extra sins is that they tried to obtain the titles of Sins of Pride and Sloth but lost to Lucifer and Belphegor, with their current titles being implied to be self proclaimed. For the sake of creating a longer narrative, the anime changes that into them being actual members of the group before losing their positions to Lucifer and Leviathan.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Astaroth competes with Beelzebub for the single best example in Hell. She may be a Demon Lord, but she is a RoseHairedSweetie that never shows any ill will towards anybody, humans or demons. The only reason she does anything bad is that she is loyal to Belial, the only Demon Lord to completely avert this trope [[spoiler:until she does a HeelFaceTurn in the end.]]
* EasilyForgiven: None of the Sins seems to hold a grudge against Belial [[spoiler:despite her having been willing to see Hell erased with them. In fact, when she manages to damage Michael, the other Sins happily acknowledge her ability and praise her as their former leader, cheering her on as she leaves Hell]]. They also don't seem to have a problem with Astaroth remaining loyal to her to the very end.
* ForegoneConclusion: Neither of them stays as Mortal Sins by the finale of the series. After all, Vanity and Melancholy aren't part of the modern list of the SevenDeadlySins.
* {{Stripperific}}: Amusingly, while Astaroth wears some of the most conservative clothes among the Sins (not that this is saying much), Belial is the most extreme example of this trope in the series.

The Demon Lord of the Sin of Vanity and the apparent leader of the Sins.
----
* AdaptationalVillainy: [[spoiler:Satanael is more of a noble figure who rebels against an evil god known as the Demiurge and cares about humanity, while in here she sells out both humanity and hell to an evil god, although she changes sides at the end.]]
* AncestralWeapon: She says her sword Dáinsleif was passed down through generations of her family. All the more humiliating when Lucifer destroys it with a single hit.
* AuthorityInNameOnly: Despite supposedly being the leader, none of the other sins care about obeying her. This is a JustifiedTrope because she is an extremely unpleasant person and the other sins can't stand to be around her. [[spoiler:Subverted as of episode 10. Because the other sins elected Belial as their leader, they are rendered powerless when they attempt to defy her, allowing Belial to easily subjugate them.]]
* BadassBoast: She gets a ''hell'' of one in the end: [[spoiler:"As a daughter of the Byrendahl/Brynedale House, I am the most beautiful and the loveliest! Hear me, angel! I am the Demon Lord Belial!"]]
* BadGuysDoTheDirtyWork: [[spoiler:Before her exile to earth, she manages to NoSell Michael's attack and take one of her Wings of Light, giving the other Demon Lords a shot. It's so impressive that all of the others who had nothing but contempt for her betrayal, acknowledge her as worthy of being their former leader.]]
* BecomingTheMask: [[spoiler:Before her exile to earth and after Micheal revealed her betrayal, Belial decided to accept her new role as a demon and a "member" of the Byrendahl/Brynedale family]].
* BerserkButton: Insult her ego in any way, shape or form and Belial will make it a point to make you ''hurt''.
* BigBadWannabe: Despite being the apparent main antagonist who drives the plot. [[spoiler:Interestingly, she becomes a real threat by the end, but only after the reveal that she was working for the real BigBad of the story. Then it turns out that TheDragon was just using her as a pawn and the BigBad seemingly wasn't even aware of Belial's presence.]]
* BondVillainStupidity: The classic “villain stops everything to gloat over the hero's defeat and maybe torture him a bit instead of just finishing him off”. The worst part about it is that she made this mistake at the start of the series and then proceeded to repeat it at the finale. NiceJobFixingItVillain indeed.
* BrokenPedestal: [[spoiler:To be so loyal to God to the point that she willingly betrays the Sins, only to find that it was God Himself who ordered her banishment? Sucks to be her, as Lucifer said.]]
* ControlFreak: Befitting her role as Lucifer’s EvilCounterpart, Belial displays many of her negatives personality traits, but even worse. For example, Lucifer can be pretty bossy to both Maria and Leviathan and insists on being the one in control of their journey, but Belial outright has rage attacks when the Mortal Sins decide to do something that wasn’t part of her plans.
* TheDogBitesBack: [[spoiler:After Michael betrays Belial, she's the one who manages to take out one of her wings of light, proclaiming proudly that she is Belial, Demon Lord of Vanity to the end.]]
* DoubleAgent: [[spoiler:She is this for God. Or rather ''was'' after Lucifer reveals that no one but God can banish angels.]]
* DramaQueen: Belial is a classic case of a Prima Donna with a Histrionic Personality Disorder. Fittingly, the English dub gives her an Aristocratic Southern American accent reminiscent of Scarlett O'Hara from ''Film/GoneWithTheWind'' who embodies that trope. [[spoiler:She later hysterically reveals to Lucifer that being in Hell was endless torment and suffering to her as she had to "bow her head to demons", but it is shown in flashback that all she had to do was to humbly and politely ask the permission of each of the other Mortal Sins to become their official leader, which they all immediately and courteously gave her anyway as none of them were even interested in the position or in playing politics, to begin with.]] She seems to have mellowed out a bit by the end of the series.
* DramaticallyMissingThePoint: As the Sin of Vanity, Belial is psychologically incapable of viewing anything related to her personally as a negative, no matter how many logical hoops she has to jump through to justify it.
* DubPronunciationChange: The English dub pronounces her name as "Beh-Lie-Yul" rather than "Beh-Lee-Yal" like in the Japanese version.
* EvilCounterpart: To Lucifer. They are both prideful and arrogant, but Lucifer always faces her challenges head-on, while Belial prefers using underhanded tricks and sending others to do the dirty job, only taking matters on her own hands when she believes her victory is assured. Also, Lucifer actually cares for those following her and even seems a bit satisfied when Maria starts becoming more assertive, while Belial does not tolerate any sort of defiance to her leadership. To top things off [[spoiler:both are fallen angels, but while Belial refuses to accept that being banished from Heaven was her fault and wants to go back, Lucifer acknowledges that she couldn’t follow God anymore and is openly rebelling against Him.]]
* EvilIsPetty: [[spoiler:Lucifer wasn't able to see through her disguise as a nurse in the hospital, so she could have simply waited until the medicines took effect to do whatever she wanted with a heavily sleeping Lucifer. But instead, Belial went out of her way to put Lucifer in a room with noisy roommates and even do a suppository, likely just to spite her.]]
* EvilLaugh: She closes off episode 8 with one.
* FallenAngel: [[spoiler:Her true identity. Belial is the angel Satanael who ironically was cast down by Lucifer herself on God's orders just as Lucifer was later cast down by Michael on God's orders.]]
* FantasticRacism: She doesn't think highly at all of humans and wonders why God even bothered to create them.
* FashionableAsymmetry: Her shoulder pads are unequal, her gloves have different colors, she has mismatched eyes and she is the only Demon Lord with horns of different sizes.
* FreudianExcuse:[[spoiler:Her secret origin in Episode 11 as the angel Satanael (God's ''most loyal'' angel) reveals that her own road to Hell was paved with good intentions. The reason she was unexplainedly and unceremoniously exiled to Hell by Lucifer was because her own overeagerly independent attempts to bring humans closer to God through half-true stories about supernatural miracles had the unintended and unexpected reverse effect of ultimately driving humans away from God and into the influence of the Mortal Sins, by causing humans (who had become lazy hedonists indulging in vices and relying entirely on Divine Providence for survival) to lose faith when the stories were inevitably proven to be mostly inflated hype. For instance, humans suffered widespread famines due to farmers utterly neglecting their crops and livestock while they spent all of their time having sex with each other in the fields. Lucifer never bothered to explain this to her and just cast her out immediately, so she naturally had a hard time accepting her eir banishment]].
* FullFrontalAssault: The only thing in her second outfit that can be called cloth is her stockings. The only thing covering her crotch is a very small piece of fabric and her nipples are barely covered by her armor.
* TheHeavy: She drives most of the plot by cursing Lucifer and sending the other Mortal Sins after her, but as revealed in episode 9, [[spoiler:God is the real BigBad. Then it turns out she's working with God and the angels.]]
* HeelFaceTurn: After spending most of the series as the main villain [[spoiler:she ultimately sides with the other Demon Lords against Michael in revenge for Michael's crimes against her, embracing her wholly fabricated nature as Belial, last surviving daughter of the Byrendahl/Brynedale Family.]]
* HeelRealization: She seems to realize [[spoiler:how her actions have been for the worst after Michael betrays her, and throws herself into battle to help the Sins, accepting her banishment to earth with a surprising amount of dignity after destroying one of Michael's Light Wings. She is last seen on Earth, a place inhabited by the humans she previously looked down upon, but rather than looking distressed, she has a contemplative look on her face.]]
* HeyYou: She addresses the other Demon Lords by their respective sins. For example, she refers to Astaroth as "Melancholy". [[spoiler:She finally addresses Astaroth by her name at the finale.]]
* HoistByHerOwnPetard: Belial's vainglorious monologuing to Lucifer of the details of her own master plan in Episode 11 [[spoiler:to help Heaven end the old world and make a new world where she will regain her former status as the angel Satanael]] causes her to accidentally relinquish her own position as official leader of the Mortal Sins, which causes the magic binding all the other demon lords to break.
* {{Hypocrite}}: She lashes out at Lucifer, and the other Mortal Sins for failing to bow to her and at the slightest hint of betrayal or failure respectively, [[spoiler:but she has been betraying Hell in its entirety since she conned the Mortal Sins into making her their leader, using forged family credentials.]]
* HumblePie: [[spoiler:Happens at the end of the series in Episodes 11 and 12, when Belial is chastened by the mercy shown to her by Lucifer and the other Mortal Sins despite torturing them and trying to leave them to be killed when the forces of Heaven come to purge Hell. Realizing that she has now lost her place in Hell because of her treachery and that she was never going to regain her place in Heaven anyway, she quietly accepts her exile to Earth after helping them out in taking down Michael.]]
* InternalizedCategorism: She loathes "commoner" demons. [[spoiler:Which is the primary reason why she usurped the family name and legacy of a fallen, but highly influential, Demon lineage.]]
* ItsAllAboutMe: She is the sin of Vanity, so this comes with the territory. [[spoiler:Turns out that has been going on for quite a while. After being cast down by Lucifer she convinced herself that the Seven Lively Virtues were just jealous of her gathering so many followers for God and that she should have been the leader. Hundreds of years passed and she never considered at all in hindsight that her own plan of spreading the word of fake miracles to bring humans closer to God may have been wrong.]]
* JackOfAllTrades: After seeing Lucifer easily defeat her, the Mortal Sins snark that Belial isn't just the second best fighter after Satan, but the second at everything. They clearly would rather see her as a MasterOfNone, but sadly for them (and Lucifer), Belial can indeed be a real threat to her enemies if they piss her off enough.
* {{Jerkass}}: Belial is easily the most unpleasant demon in the series, utterly full of herself, has a rather nasty penchant for torture [[spoiler:and is in on God's plan to purge Earth and Hell]].
* KickTheDog: [[spoiler:She tortures the other Mortal Sins in episodes 10 for choosing to side with Lucifer over her, and her treatment of poor Beelzebub, the nicest of the demon lord and Lucifer's No. 1 fangirl (aside from Leviathan) is particularly [[IronicHell cruel.]] She has a pair of male demons who look like stereotypical porn antagonists (bald obese middle-aged men) continually [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything force-feed]] Beelzebub --- who has a history of suffering from eating disorders, as shown in episode 7 --- what appears to be a never-ending series of either French bread or pork sausages, which are all just way too large for her mouth, forcing Beelzebub to swallow them all without even managing to chew any of them. That's surely got to wreak havoc with her digestive system.]]
* MaliciousSlander: She begins episode 8 outright lying about the encounter between Beelzebub and Lucifer. Not only claiming that Lucifer curb-stomped Beelzebub ''in battle'' (although Lucifer and Beelzebub technically tied in an eating contest due to illness), but also captured Beelzebub and started demeaning her by treating her as a literal lap-dog. This she did deliberately to provoke Satan into a righteous fury to go deliver a completely undeserved NoHoldsBarredBeatdown on Lucifer.
* MeanBoss: It becomes apparent why none of the other Sins really like her much; Belial ''sucks'' as a boss and her vanity makes her lash out at people when things don't go how she wanted.
* NeverMyFault: [[spoiler:She is totally blind to the fact that her methods of bringing humans closer to God were flawed, instead choosing to believe that the Seven Lively Virtues cast her out of Heaven because they were jealous of her loyalty to God. On top of that, when she is describing to Lucifer “how much she suffered” since she arrived in Hell, she talks about how she had to lower her head to Demon Lords to get them to trust her. Never mind that she did that of her own initiative, as part of her own plan to get back to Heaven.]]
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: After weakening Lucifer with her curse, she decides to mock her by chopping her angel wings off. All this does is complete her transformation into a demon, giving her a fighting chance.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Despite being somewhat weaker than Lucifer and the other Sins not caring to follow her orders, she is still easily the most dangerous character of the series because of how far she'll go to stand at the top. She manages to seal Lucifer's defeat in the first episode by inflicting a curse on her that weakens her and causes her to bleed.[[spoiler:She also managed to steal Maria's heart and then kidnap her right under Lucifer's nose.]] In addition, despite being "second best" in every one of her skills, she uses her magic powers to overwhelm Satan and proceeds to torture her for losing to Lucifer, just to showcase how annoyed she is.
* ObviousJudas: Belial is the nastiest of all the Sins with absolutely no hint of nobility within her, at least until the finale. [[spoiler:So, of course, she would be working with Heaven to erase both Earth and Hell]].
* PetTheDog: Belial is noticeably much nicer and patient to Astaroth than she is to any other character. This is probably due to PragmaticVillainy, but may also be due to the fact that Astaroth is the only one to fully show Belial the respect and deference that she believes is due to herself as the official leader of the Mortal Sins, as Astaroth neither sassily talks back at her nor snarkily makes snide side-comments about her behind her back like all of the other catty demon lords. By the end, she's even living with Astaroth and seems poised to attend her street concerts.
* ProudBeauty: She is no different from Lucifer in this aspect.
* PokeThePoodle: [[spoiler: The torture she inflicts on Belphegor is forcing her to run on treadmill. Downplayed since there '''was''' a giant flame at the end, but compared to what was inflicted on the other Sins it feels like torture because it was inflicted on [[LazyBum Belphegor ]].]]
* PowerParasite: She reveals to Satan in Episode 9 (though it's hinted at as early as episode 1), that the reason she "cursed" Lucifer at the start is to steal the Archangel's power for herself.
* RedemptionEqualsLife: [[spoiler:She launches a suicidal charge against Michael, taking out one of her Wings of Light and giving the others a chance. She survives the story and ends up living with Astaroth on Earth]].
* TheResenter: [[spoiler:Her self-proclaimed having-the-most-loyalty to God was genuine enough, but it caused her to covet Lucifer's rightful place as the leader of the Seven Lively Virtues, as she believed that none deserved it more than she did. She also hated the fact that she had to even ask for the express permission of all of the other demon lords to become their official leader, ostensibly in order to counter Heaven and thwart any possible invasion, but actually part of her master plan to return back to Heaven by selling out Hell.]]
* RewardedAsATraitorDeserves: [[spoiler:Once Belial has served her purpose, Michael attempts to dispose of her. However, Belial realizes her mistake in time and manages to redeem herself]].
* SelfServingMemory: After all the Sins worked together to defeat Lucifer, Belial boasts that she defeated her singlehanded. Mammon comments that Belial simply can't see the truth if it doesn't benefit her. Later revelations about her true origins show that she melodramatically exaggerates what actually happens in flashbacks.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: After Lucifer and Leviathan leave Hell, the other Sins ask her why she hasn't gotten dressed yet. She says she doesn't care and is proud she was able to defeat Lucifer while practically naked.
* ShootTheShaggyDog: [[spoiler:Everything she did was to get back to Heaven. Only for her to learn that was never, ever going to happen, meaning her scheming and betrayals were totally in vain. At the end, though, she ends up living peacefully with Astaroth on Earth and seems to have come to terms with everything.]]
* ShouldersOfDoom: All the more noticeable because she is barely wearing anything besides those huge shoulder pads.
* SmallNameBigEgo: She's constantly bragging about her family and position, except no one else cares at all. [[spoiler:This is later revealed to have been quite deliberately cultivated by her. Belial is not a member of the Byrnedahl/Brynedale clan. She's not even a natural-born demon, but a fallen angel.]]
* SmugSnake: Belial may talk big and call herself the leader of the Sins, but the other demons don't care about following her lead and openly deride her. While she does have the power to deal with them on a one-on-one basis, she's far too full of herself well past the point of justification to escape this trope.
* SouthernBelle: She has a deep Southern American accent in the dub, giving her an air of this. It works, given her character and proud heritage.
* StatuesqueStunner: Belial is utterly gorgeous and very tall.
* TheyJustDontGetIt: In episode 11, [[SelfServingMemory even in her own memories,]] [[spoiler:she's cast out of Heaven for telling mortals about ''false'' miracles.]] Rather than listen to the '''why''', she chose to fixate on the '''who'''.
* TookALevelInKindness: [[spoiler:Implied at the end of the series, when she allows Astaroth to join her in exile on Earth as her devoted sidekick.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: It's confirmed in episode 9 that she has been stealing Lucifer's power for herself ever since she cursed her at the start of the series. The following episode shows how much stronger she became thanks to it. [[spoiler:She easily defeats and subjugates all Mortal Sins, including Satan, who had already been established as being stronger than Belial.]]
* TortureForFunAndInformation: She lives for torturing and tormenting others. Interrogating them is often both an excuse and an afterthought.
* TouchTelepathy: While Lucifer was unconscious in episode 7, Belial is able to read some of her thoughts by pressing their breasts together.
* TragicVillain: [[spoiler:Belial was once an angel who just loved God and wanted to lead more humans to Heaven. The methods she used were flawed, but she was kicked to Hell without even an explanation, where she was utterly miserable for centuries. As nasty as she is, everything she's done is just so she can go home, reunite with God and be an angel again. Tellingly, the name Belial that she gave herself as a demon after being cut off from heaven? Means 'worthless,' reflecting how her vanity seems to be over-compensating for serious feelings of inadequacy.]]
* VillainHasAPoint: [[spoiler: After she kidnapps Maria, Maria says Lucifer will come to save her. Belial reminds Maria that Lucifer was the one who took her heart in the first place.]]
* WellDoneSonGuy: Well Done Daughter Gal in this case, but beneath that cruel, vain exterior, [[spoiler:is a girl who just wanted her Father-that is, God- to acknowledge her and welcome her back home.]]
* WorthyOpponent: [[spoiler:Takes a while to get there, but the Sins and Lucifer acknowledge her as worthy of her former position as Leader once she lands a good hit on Michael herself, which shows them how to beat her.]]
* WreckedWeapon: Lucifer shatters her ancestral sword Dáinsleif in a single hit. [[spoiler:Twice even.]]

The Demon Lord of the sin of Melancholy. She tends to be extremely both apathetic and melancholic.
----
* AmbiguouslyGay: Her feelings for Belial are never explicitly called anything but "loyalty", but it's not hard to see them as romantic in nature. Especially because her fight with Leviathan in Episode 10 clearly draws parallels between their feelings for Belial and Lucifer, and there is no doubt that Levi is in love with Lucifer. There is also how she is shown daydreaming about getting intimate with Belphegor in one of the Short Specials.
* AntiVillain: Ironically, despite her being a Mortal Sin, the only thing that leads her to perform any villainous action is a virtue. Namely her UndyingLoyalty to Belial.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: She reveals to Leviathan when they fight that the reason why she is so loyal to Belial is that Belial has always been kind to her. It even seems that Belial and Belphegor were the only ones of the Mortal Sins who even bothered to check up on and physically visit Astaroth when she was on Earth. A flashback shows that Astaroth was simply overwhelmed by the mere act of Belial politely asking for her permission to become the official leader of the Mortal Sins. Considering Astaroth's own tragically low self-esteem, this makes perfect sense.
* BrilliantButLazy: She's actually a pretty good singer, but her depressive apathy and crippling shyness mean she doesn't give her all while performing, until Belial and Belphegor make her do it.
* BringMyBrownPants: She realizes she peed herself a little when Lucifer and Leviathan barge in her apartment and challenge her.
* CleavageWindow: Her top has a cut that shows her cleavage.
* CovertPervert: The fourth Blu-ray exclusive Short Special shows that her imagination can… run wild sometimes. Even Astaroth herself was mortified by it.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Both her hair and eyes are pink.
* DoingItForTheArt: Unlike the other Sins, she performs in concerts because she wants to and not to gather followers.
* TheDragon: To Belial, not because she is the strongest among her underling, but the most loyal. [[spoiler:She assumes this position by default during the last episodes, as all the other Mortal Sins have decided to ditch Belial for being such a MeanBoss.]]
* DramaQueen: While calling public attention to herself is the last thing she'd choose to do, her incurable worrywart nature and massive self-pity cause her to make mountains out of molehills.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Maria’s friend Mina is listening to Astaroth’s song at the end of episode 1, a good 4 episodes before her introduction.
* EvilDiva: Subverted. She's a Demon Lord, but not interested in claiming human souls and one of the nicest characters in the series.
* FriendlyEnemy: She and Lucifer develop some sort of mutual respect during their singing competition, and afterwards they even have a friendly talk about Astaroth’s plans for the future. This is despite Astaroth being the one Demon Lord that refuses to leave Belial and thus remain Lucifer’s enemy after being defeated.
* GracefulLoser: She doesn't hold it against Lucifer for besting her at her concert.
* GratuitousRap: When nervous, she speaks rapping.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Well, she isn’t exactly “heroic”, but she is the TokenGoodTeammate of the Mortal Sins. Despite being an incredibly popular idol on Earth (or at least in Japan) she remains forever plagued by a pathological inferiority complex, and even in her happiest moments, she still always suffers chronic self-doubt feelings of inadequacy and ineptness. This makes a lot of sense, as she is the demon lord of Melancholy.
* IdolSinger: At first it seems to be just a ploy to get people to fall into melancholy through depressive songs, but it turns out she really enjoys singing. Though she gives up on the “idol” part because she can’t deal with large crowds.
* IneffectualSympatheticVillain: While the other Sins generally put up a good fight against Lucifer, she mostly cowers in fear and ends up getting into a mud-slinging match with Levi when she actually tries to fight.
* MakeMeWannaShout: Being a musically-themed demon, her primary abilities revolve around sound.
* OnlyFriend: Belphegor seems to be her only friend, at least while she was still a formal member of the Mortal Sins. [[spoiler:Subverted later when the ONA's show her interacting more with the rest of the cast, which implies she learned how to be more social after the events of the series]].
* OptOut: [[spoiler:Rather than fight Michael with the others, she rescues Belial and leaves Hell. In abandoning her throne, she allows Levi to take her place among the Seven Sins]].
* PassingTheTorch: She ends up giving up her throne, allowing Levi to formally take her place among the Seven Mortal Sins.
* RedBaron: She is known as "The Languid Diva."
* ReluctantFanserviceGirl: One of the short specials is about Astaroth having to pose in various cosplay outfits to increase her popularity. Being a ShrinkingViolet, she is begging for help inside her head.
* RockMeAsmodeus: Her weapon of choice is a guitar, and she styles herself as a rock musician.
* RoseHairedSweetie: She has rose-pink hair, and is one of the kindest characters in the series.
* SinisterScythe: At the end of episode 9, it's revealed that her guitar transforms into a scythe.
* ShrinkingViolet: Suffers from crippling shyness and stage fright to the point she freezes up around large crowds.
* SouthernBelle: In the English dub, Astaroth has a southern accent like Belial above.
* TokenGoodTeammate: The nature of her sin makes her much less malicious and aggressive than the other Demon Lords. Notably, at the end of her debut episode, she declares she will continue being a singer because she loves singing, not because she needs to gather followers through her melancholic songs. Also, unlike the Demon Lords that got an episode focusing on them before her, she was never seen belittling humans or her fellow Demon Lords, though she often belittles herself due to her pathological inferiority complex.
* UndyingLoyalty: She is utterly loyal to Belial, siding with her against the other Mortal Sins and ultimately forgiving her for her betrayal. [[spoiler:She leaves Hell alongside Belial, abandoning her throne to live a normal life on Earth]].
* WorthyOpponent: She was scared of Lucifer at first, but came to admire her after seeing some of her music videos. The biggest surprise is that the feeling seems to be mutual.

[[folder:The Virtues in General]]

Seven angels from Heaven that stand in opposition to the Mortal Sins. To counter the influence Demon Lords have on humans, they go to Earth to try to guide humans into a path of virtue as per God's will. [[spoiler:It’s revealed later in the ''Seven Mortal Sins'' anime that, since God decided that humans can’t be saved anymore, the Virtues are planning to purge Earth and Hell and then recreate the world into a true “paradise”.]]

To see tropes pertaining to their own series, go [[Characters/SevenHeavenlyVirtues here]].
----
* AdaptationalVillainy: The backstory of the figure line establishes that the Virtues do give their all to help humans, questionable competency aside. In the continuity of this anime, they may have been like that in the past, [[spoiler:but by the time of the events of the series they have lost hope on humans, and support God’s plan of purging Earth to create a new world.]]
* AngelicBeauty: All of them, including Lucifer before her banishment.
* TheCameo: Michael is the only one to make a proper appearance in the ''Seven Mortal Sins'' anime. The others cameo as nameless robed figures, and are shown in Chibi form in the final episode's bonus art.
* GenderBlenderName: None of them have feminine names.
* GenderFlip: The angels they are named after are often stated to be genderless, but they are usually portrayed as males, at least in appearance. Those angels here are undoubtedly female.
* LadyNotAppearingInThisGame: The Seven Virtues line was announced before the ''Seven Mortal Sins'' anime premiered, but with the exception of Michael none of them actually show up in the anime save for a cameo as a nameless, robed figure and as a Chibi in the end card. Subverted when they got their own anime.
* LightIsNotGood: [[spoiler:They all agree with God's plan to purge humanity.]]
* {{Stripperific}}: Just as bad as their demonic counterparts. Michael and Sandalphon have outfits that cover a decent amount of skin, but the others… don’t.
* WingedHumanoid: Similar to the horns of the demons, angels have wings to represent their angel-hood, albeit on different parts of their bodies. For example, Raphael has hers on her hips while Metatron has her wings on her boots.

->''"God does not err."''

The first angel introduced, carrying out God's will by banishing Lucifer to Hell. She is an Archangel and the leader of the Seven Lively Virtues, representing Faith.
----
* AmbitionIsEvil: Michael clearly believes this. She does what she's told when she's told. No more no less. Lucifer pities and scorns her for this as she will never improve or advance with that lackluster attitude.
* AntiVillain: As the leader of the Seven Lively Virtues, Michael has many traits that would normally be seen as noble and admirable, namely loyalty and a strong sense of duty. [[spoiler:But those traits are the reason she always follows God's orders, even when they tell her to purge both Earth and Hell.]]
* ArchangelMichael: As a sexy, less-than-heroic woman.
* BlindObedience: The policy that she not only lives by where God is concerned, but expects the rest of the universe to abide by as well, and responds with murderous malice when this isn't the case.
* CommissarCap: She sports one, as part of her military style.
* TheDragon: She acts as God's Top Enforcer.
* DragonInChief: Since God doesn't appear, she acts as the main threat.
* FinalBoss: Because God is TheUnfought, she serves as the final opponent of the series.
* {{Foil}}: Michael is the Faith that opposes to Lucifer's Pride. Michael believes God cannot do wrong, wants others to abide by His rules and has no ambition or desire beyond serving faithfully, while Lucifer is arrogant, has no problem challenging God's orders and believes people should be free to follow their desires even if those are usually seen as wrong or sinful.
* GoodIsNotNice: Michael is one of the Seven Lively Virtues of Heaven, and is highly acerbic. [[spoiler:Though the "good" part is apparently subverted with the god she serves being evil.]]
* GoodIsNotSoft: When the time came to carry out Lucifer's sentence, Michael did so without hesitation or remorse. [[spoiler:Subverted when it turns out that her [[GodIsEvil God is evil]].]]
* GracefulLoser: [[spoiler: Accepts that she's lost after Lucifer and asks her to finish her off.]]
* HardLight: She has six wings of light, as a symbol of her role as the leader of the Seven Lively Virtues. [[spoiler:The Sins each destroy one, weakening her in the process]].
* ILied: [[spoiler:She was the one who promised Belial that she would return to Heaven if she surrendered Hell for the purging. When Belial makes good on her word, Michael says that God does not negotiate with Demon Lords. Lucifer implies that Michael never intended to bring up the matter with God to begin with.]]
* IWarnedYou: Lucifer's flashback shows Michael clearly warning Lucifer about PrideBeforeAFall. Sadly, Lucifer didn't listen.
* KickTheSonOfABitch: [[spoiler:True, telling Belial that she has a chance of coming back to Heavens, which is what she wanted the most in her life, only to crush all her hope by denying that possibility even existed is a very cruel thing to do, but seeing how Belial spend the entire series as a huge {{Jerkass}} and a MeanBoss, it's hard to say she didn't deserve such treatment.]]
* KnightTemplar: She is blindly obedient to the will of God, and will do whatever is necessary to see that it is carried out. She's an angel that makes deals with demon lords and lies without a second thought, never mind that whole [[spoiler:purge the earth]] thing.
* NumberTwo: Michael is second in command, first under Lucifer, and then under God directly. She gets promoted to number one after Lucifer is banished to Hell.
* OneWomanArmy: [[spoiler:Each of the Mortal Sins had to use all of their energy just to take down one feather of her Light Wings, and afterwards she manages to defeat and kill Lucifer. If Maria wasn’t there to bring Lucifer back to life, Michael would have defeated all the Mortal Sins singlehanded.]]
* PsychoLesbian: [[spoiler:Levi realizes Michael is actually in love with Lucifer and is so twisted because she can't reconcile her loyalty to God with her feelings for Lucifer. She comes to the conclusion that if she and Lucifer become enemies, Lucifer will have to fight her seriously, which is what Michael always wanted. She is disturbingly satisfied with the idea that one of them will kill the other. She was perfectly calm when it seemed she killed Lucifer, but also happily accepted death when Lucifer came back and turned the tables, and was disappointed when Lucifer spared her.]]
* PuttingOnTheReich: In the anime, her angelic robes transform into a uniform that wouldn't be out of place in Germany during WWI, and aside from the skirt and color would fit very nicely in the S.S. during WWII. Or worse yet, the uniforms of high ranking soldiers in the Soviet Union.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Egg-based dishes in general, particularly omelet. This isn't mentioned in this series, only in the ''Anime/SevenHeavenlyVirtues'' SpinOff and [[AllThereInTheManual official material for the figure line]].
* UnderestimatingBadassery: She clearly didn’t expect that the Mortal Sins would put as much of a fight as they did. She kept a surprised look in her face for half of the fight. [[spoiler:Through she still defeated all of them. It’s just that she didn’t expect that they would be able to take the Light Wings with them.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: As the representative of Faith, she is utterly loyal to God.
* UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans: [[spoiler:She is willing to bargain with Demon Lords, ''betray'' said Demon Lords, and kill the woman she loves in order to carry out God's plan to recreate the universe as Paradise]].
* VillainHasAPoint: Warned Lucifer that her pride would become her downfall.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: With Lucifer. [[spoiler:In fact, what she wants most of all is to feel acknowledged by Lucifer, even if it has to be as an enemy]].

->''"Is it bad for me to believe in a Demon Lord?"''

A human Catholic schoolgirl that Lucifer meets when she crashes on Earth. Lucifer takes her heart, making her immortal, and drags her into her quest.
----
* AllLovingHero: The epitome of the ideal. She is never shown bearing a grudge, and does not judge persons, but rather behaviors, and when bad behavior stops, regardless of source, ''even including Demon Lords'', she's perfectly okay in socializing, and coming to the defense of, anyone and everyone in genuine distress, regardless of their previous history. [[spoiler:It's heavily implied that her gentle personality is what made Lucifer fall in love with her.]]
* AmbiguouslyHuman: [[spoiler:It's unclear how human Maria still is by the end of the series. She had her heart switched with that of a Demon Lord, killed herself, and then got resurrected by Lucifer's angel blood, with the implication that said blood remained inside of Maria. Everybody seemed happy with this result, but ultimately they never explained what kind of life Maria will have from now on.]]
* ArtisticLicenseReligion: Defied, amazingly enough. Although she's neither shown quoting scripture nor engaging in any Catholic rituals, she actively embodies the ideal of the Christian faith, "hate the sin but love the sinner" in its entirety. Considering the story is set in, and made by and for Japan, a nation with a historically vicious anti-Christian bias (at least from the establishment of the Tokugawa Shogunate until the defeat of the Japanese Empire in UsefulNotes/WorldWarTwo) a positive portrayal by Japan of a Christian any way is truly worthy of note.
* BadassAdorable: Only in Belphegor's game. She is the same sweet and gentle girl, but after some training, she also becomes the best fighter among the heroes, and ultimately succeeds in taking down ''Lucifer''.
* BeatThemAtTheirOwnGame: She triumphs over Leviathan, ''the demon of envy'', by admitting she's jealous. Lucifer (who was secretly watching) goes on to lampshade it, and then openly forbids Leviathan from ''trying'' to harm Maria in any way, ever again.
* BlessedWithSuck: As Lucifer points out, Maria's got a lot of perks many humans would happily kill for, immortality, eternal youth, living in a luxurious penthouse suite, all expenses paid, indefinitely. Of course, this all comes at the price of having to serve a very sexually sadistic Demon Lord, and having to worry about that Demon Lord's equally, if not more so, sexually sadistic PsychoLesbian self-proclaimed lover who utterly hates her for "stealing away Lucifer's affection" and does not hesitate to show it the moment Lucifer turns her back. Thankfully for Maria, Lucifer TookALevelInKindness later on.
* BrokenPedestal: She is a Christian who has faith in God. [[spoiler:But considering that she found out about [[GodIsEvil God being evil]] this surely was a shock to her.]]
** Possibly averted/subverted [[spoiler:All of the [=ONAs=] and [=OVAs=] begin with a FramingDevice of Maria actually still praying to God to both forgive and bless her "Friends" I.e. The Seven Mortal Sins, as she narrates their various misadventures. Of course, whether this kind of FramingDevice can be seen as canon is up to debate.]]
* ButtMonkey: Being the personal plaything of Demon Lords is not fun at all.
* CanonForeigner: Unlike the Mortal Sins she doesn't have a pre-existing figure, and she also didn't show up in the short stories of the official site of the figure line. She was created just for the anime.
* CharacterDevelopment: Maria was a kind girl from the start, but after getting to know the Mortal Sins and realizing that even demons have a good side to them, she fully became an AllLovingHero and came to empathize with those beings that used to scare her so much. Thanks to losing her fear she also subtly [[GrewASpine became a bit more assertive]], best demonstrated when [[spoiler:Belial kidnapped her. Despite clearly being afraid and uncertain about what would happen, she looks at the Demon Lord in the face and tells her that Lucifer won’t be defeated. This is coming from the girl that was hesitant to simply speak her mind on her first night with Lucifer and Leviathan.]]
* CompleteImmortality: As long as Lucifer is holding her heart Maria is immortal and forever young. [[spoiler:Due to Lucifer switching out her heart with hers, she is implied to return to being mortal, but we aren't sure what effect this will have.]]
* CovertPervert: Asmodeus accuses Maria of this when she captures her in Episode 3, and after drugging Maria with a powerful aphrodisiac in one of the specials, she finds out that she was right. ''[[GoneHorriblyRight Incredibly]]'' [[GoneHorriblyRight right, as a matter of fact]]: [[https://i1.wp.com/fapservice.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/vlcsnap-2017-12-21-13h31m58s244.png without her inhibitions, sweet, innocent Maria is a bigger freak than the Demon Lord of Lust.]]
** Proved this earlier when she saw Asmodeus pole dancing and tried to cover her eyes, except she was clearly looking through her fingers.
* DamselInDistress: [[spoiler:In episode 7 Belial steals her heart from Lucifer and then kidnaps her.]]
* {{Deuteragonist}}: The main focus of the series is Lucifer’s quest to defeat the Mortal Sins and how she develops as she interacts with them, but Maria is definitely the one to receive the most focus after the prideful fallen angel. Both Maria and Leviathan are with Lucifer from the start, but Leviathan’s feelings for her remain the same through the series, while Maria’s interactions with Lucifer slowly make the two reconsider their views of each other and provide CharacterDevelopment for both.
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: After she frees herself from Mammon's brainwashing she calls her out for having mind controlled servants take care of her children instead doing it herself, pointing out that it was Mammon's presence that truly made them happy.
* TheDragAlong: Maria is basically dragged by Lucifer into her quest, and can't leave her because Lucifer has her heart. [[spoiler:This is because she has angel blood inside of her which allows her to locate the other Sins, something which Lucifer finds to be useful.]]
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: At first some of the Demon Lords thought that Lucifer only kept Maria close for pragmatic reasons, but by the end of the series everyone but Maria (And maybe Leviathan) can apparently see that Lucifer has genuinely fallen in love with her.
* GreenEyedMonster: She admits to Leviathan that she's jealous of her and others for being in love. She's never been in love before and wants to know what it is like.
* GrewASpine: She went from being unable to do anything but crying as Lucifer forcefully drags her around, to shaming Mammon for the cold way she raises her children, and then to actually challenging Lucifer when she is lead to believe that [[ItMakesSenseInContext the fallen angel was terrorizing an alternative world]].
* GuardianAngel: [[spoiler:Lucifer reveals she's been watching over Maria her entire life, and chose to fight for humanity ''because'' she loved the little human girl that always prayed to her]].
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Uses ''herself'' as a VirginSacrifice to the Demon Lord of Pride, resurrecting Lucifer at the cost of her own life. She gets better]].
* HiddenDepths: There's far more value to Maria for Lucifer than Maria's "angelic blessing." Through the course of the story, Maria's shown many hidden talents and abilities, that even Maria didn't know she had. As a prime example, in episode 5, '''Maria''', not Lucifer, comes up with not one, but ''two'' very effective, and well-made music videos to beat Astaroth at her own field of expertise. Even with Lucifer's limitless well of resources, to make those videos, and make them well, in under a day each takes ''serious talent.'' Furthermore, the musical showdown was all Maria's idea when both Lucifer and Leviathan were stumped.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: Belphegor, who is clearly a demon, manipulates Maria into fighting Lucifer. Granted Lucifer wasn't helping her case.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: She spends the entirety of the second episode repeating this and being happily ignored by Lucifer. She did not want to live in a high-class hotel, she did not want a demon to take a liking to her and she definitely did not want to be made immortal.
* ImmuneToMindControl: Somewhat. She was unaffected by Asmodeus' lust powers and drinking Mammon's breast milk didn't make her obsessed with being a mother. But she's not immune to Lucifer forcing her body to move against her will or Mammon taking away her body movements, though it's shown she's ''[[AndIMustScream always aware]]''.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: She gets stabbed through the chest, three times. First by Lucifer, [[spoiler:second by Belial, and third by herself.]] As expected, she finds it extremely painful.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: Gets to meet the Mortal Sins in person, and in the process witnesses many people falling into their temptation, with some of the Sins even making her their next target. Despite all that, her kindness and idealism never vanishes. If anything those experiences made her ''kinder'', as she was able to see past the whole “corrupt humans” stuff and realized that even Demon Lords have a good side.
* InterrogatedForNothing: Belial doesn't believe her when she states that she doesn't know what Lucifer's end goal is. So Belial proceeds to try and torture the non-existent info out of her.
* LustObject: As early as the very first episode, and it isn't just demon-lords either. Even her best friend, Mina, loves to fondle and grope her, despite her objections. By the end of the series, Lucifer seems to have fallen for her romantically.
* MoralityPet: For all her controlling attitude towards Maria, Lucifer has shown signs of genuinely caring about her and allows Maria to address her informally- no small thing for someone as utterly egotistical and proud as Lucifer is. Indeed, Maria's presence is one of the main reasons for Lucifer [[TookALevelInKindness becoming a nicer person]] later in the series.
* NakedFreakOut: Every time she is suddenly stripped, she reacts like this, yelling and covering her privates.
* NakedOnRevival: [[spoiler:She performs a HeroicSacrifice in the finale and disintegrates. When Lucifer manages to bring her back to life, she materializes in [[BridalCarry Lucifer's arms]] naked.]]
* NiceGirl: How nice is she? After Leviathan spent an entire episode insulting, humiliating and trying to kill her, Maria responds by giving the demon a pep talk about being yourself and even tells her that feeling envy because of love isn’t a sin. There is nothing indicating she holds any grudge against Leviathan despite everything she did.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: How does she wind up on Lucifer's radar? By coming to Lucifer's aid, when the recently fallen angel was broken, bloody, and bound after crashing into the church where Maria was working. [[spoiler:It's later revealed that Lucifer had been watching Maria since she was a child, making this trope subverted.]]
* OurAngelsAreDifferent: [[spoiler:Is implied to become a pseudo-angel of sorts thanks to Lucifer's angel blood.]]
* PottyFailure: In episode 2 Leviathan attempts to humiliate Maria by molesting her with water tendrils that sneaked under her clothes. By the end of it, the stimulus makes Maria wet herself in front of another person (actually Lucifer in disguise) in the elevator.
* ReluctantFanserviceGirl: Unlike the Demons Lords she is being forced to follow, Maria doesn’t enjoy being put into so many {{Fanservice}} situations. Thanks to Lucifer, she doesn’t have much of a choice.
* ASaintNamedMary: As a highly faithful Catholic NiceGirl and AllLovingHero in a franchise revolving around Biblical characters, it makes perfect sense for her to be name Maria.
* ShamefulStrip: Lucifer takes control of Maria's own body to force her to take off her clothes.
* StockholmSyndrome: After a few days and nights in Lucifer and Leviathan's service, she begins to care about them.
* TechnicalVirgin: While she often gets sexually harassed by the Demon Lords and even becomes the victim of an AttemptedRape once, she never has sex with anyone. [[spoiler:Good thing too, as it allows her to use herself as a VirginSacrifice in the finale to revive Lucifer.]]
* TokenHuman: The only human in a cast full of demons.
* ToylessToylineCharacter: There is no figure of her as she was made for the anime. The same applies to side characters like her friend Mina, Charon and God (Who has yet to make a physical appearance).
* UnwittingPawn: Belphegor tricks her into believing her game is an alternative world that Lucifer is terrorizing ForTheEvulz and she is the only that can stop her. Maria buys it and comes pretty close to defeating Lucifer, but realizes the truth in time to save her from Belphegor’s finishing blow.
* WrongGenreSavvy: Episode 6 sees Belphegor trick her into thinking she is the ChosenOne in a Isekai series meant to fight the villain.
* VirginSacrifice: [[spoiler:She uses ''herself'' as one, in order to resurrect Lucifer]].
* WhoWantsToLiveForever: She wasn’t happy in the slightest when Lucifer made her immortal by stealing her heart. Hard to blame to her since Lucifer kidnapped her.
* YouAreWorthHell: [[spoiler:Turns out that Maria is the reason Lucifer decided to fight to stop God from purging humanity even if it meant falling to Hell. Thanks to that one girl that kept praying for her, she was able to keep her faith in humans, [[HumansAreFlawed even if they are flawed]].]]

* {{Hammerspace}}: Where else would Behemoth keep that chainsaw?
* {{Irony}}: Behemoth looks a lot small for its name and is Leviathan's sidekick rather than rival.
* MoralityPet: Leviathan is usually a big jerk to anybody not named Lucifer, but she does seem to trust and care about Behemoth.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: When Leviathan and Astaroth are both trapped in the ice of Cocytus, Astaroth asks Behemoth to pick up her guitar and play a song loud enough to shatter the ice. Despite Leviathan's doubts, it actually succeeds offscreen.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Very cute in appearance, except for its face, which is covered in a gas mask.
* TheSpeechless: Never speaks at all. Given that we never get to see its face, only a gas mask covering it, we can't even be sure if it has a mouth to speak.
* TeamPet: For the main cast.

The lord of all the Heavens and the one who exiled Lucifer. It is later revealed that God also plans to finally purge both Earth and Hell once and for all.
----
* BigBad: As revealed in episode 9, He is the real villain who aims to purge Earth and Hell, pitting Lucifer against Him.
* BrokenPedestal: To Lucifer, and later Belial as well as Maria, when they learn His plan to purge humans and demons.
* DespairEventHorizon: Implied to have crossed this before the series started. According to Michael, He said "My Grace has reached its limits/come to an end." as He ordered the destruction of both Earth and Hell so He could recreate the world, because humans couldn’t stop themselves from inevitably succumbing to the Temptations offered by the Mortal Sins and so ultimately falling into Hell when they died.
* EvilAllAlong: Not the same kind and merciful God we all know, is it?
* TheGhost: God never directly appears, only being referenced by others or smiting/summoning from a distance.
* GodIsEvil: Having lost all hope on humanity, God plans to purge both Earth and Hell to create a new world.
* JerkassGod: Implied by Lucifer to be this.
* PsychopathicManchild: Lucifer sees Him as this. In a flashback to the time she was banished, she compares His decision to purge humanity for failing to live up to His expectations to a young child throwing a temper tantrum because things didn't go according to plan.
* TheUnfought: While the Sins promise to defeat God, He/She never appears in the series.
* WalkingSpoiler: Him being evil and the BigBad is not revealed until Episode 9.

* AmbiguouslyGay: Was in love with someone in the past (but we don't know if that is a girl or a boy),and she also casually gropes Maria’s butt and then jokingly proposes to her.
* TheGadfly: Gives Maria a reassuring talk about how she will be always there for her if she needs help… then immediately gropes her butt for no reason.
* LoveHurts: From what we see in Maria’s flashback in episode 2, a person (of unknown sex) dumped her for another girl or she was the loser side of a LoveTriangle. Either way, she got hurt.
* NiceGirl: From what little personality she gets to show in her limited screen time, she seems to be this.
* SatelliteCharacter: She only exists to establish that yes; Maria had a normal life before meeting Lucifer.

* SatelliteCharacter: He is Belial’s loyal servant that [[EquippableAlly doubles as her armor]]… and nothing else, really.
* SecretKeeper: The only demon in Hell who knows that [[spoiler:Belial is actually a FallenAngel.]]
* TheQuietOne: Despite having plenty of screen time, he only speaks in three scenes. It’s possible that he can’t speak while in armor form, but nothing of the sort is specified.
* UndyingLoyalty: He may actually be more loyal to Belial than Astaroth. [[spoiler:Unlike her, he was aware of Belial’s [[FallenAngel origin]] and real plans from the very start, and still faithfully obeyed her the entire time.]]

!! Charon

As fits the mythology, he ferries the souls of the dead across the River Styx, for a price.
----
* BitCharacter: He is just there to provide a fight to Lucifer and Leviathan, establishing that even for Demon Lords, invading Hell is no stroll in the park.
* BlackEyesOfEvil: His sclera are solid black.
* DidNotThinkThisThrough: Yeah, he may have had Lucifer and Leviathan in a LeonineContract because they needed him to ferry them across the Styx, but pushing them so far that they were forced to fight back really wasn't going to go well for him as the souls of the dead in the River Styx hate him much more than they do Lucifer and Leviathan, and are going to take the opportunity to vent their rage on him the moment they get the chance.
* DirtyOldMan: When he demands his "fare" and asks for the souls of some of Lucifer's followers, and is refused as part of the negotiations, he turns to peeking at Lucifer's panties, [[ShamelessFanserviceGirl while she doesn't object to that]], he takes it further and starts licking her as well. Neither Lucifer nor Leviathan are pleased at all with that.
* EpicFlail: He can use his tongue as both a flail and a whip when pressed.
* LecherousLicking: He licks the undergarments of both Leviathan and Lucifer, while the women are still wearing them, as they're being ferried on the River Styx.
* OverlyLongTongue: It reaches from his head all the way across the ship he ferries across the River Styx.
* SapientShip: He is the wooden ship he ferries.
