[[folder:Edmond]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/edmundrad.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Toby Scott Ganger (English), Diana Santos (Latin American Spanish), Creator/IkueOtani (Japanese), Ludwig Bell (Swedish), Eirik Espolin Johnson (Norwegian)
The main character, a young farm boy from the real world who reads about the tale of Chanticleer. As his family struggles to prevent an incoming flood from razing their farm, Edmond calls out to Chanticleer in the storm. The boy instead encounters the Grand Duke of Owls, the one responsible for the rooster's disappearance, and gets transformed into a kitten before Patou saves his life at the last moment. Having known beforehand about the farm animals' situation, Edmond brings along a few of them and sets out to retrieve Chanticleer back to the farm.
----
* CaptainObvious: Much of his dialogue is repeating everything everyone else says several times.
* CassandraTruth: None of the other animals believe him when he says he was a human who was turned into a cat by the Grand Duke. [[spoiler:Until he is almost killed at the end.]]
* CuteKitten: Edmond post-transformation is a cute little kitten possessing few negative qualities associated with cats. When he attempts to eat Peepers early on in the film, he comes to his senses and calls himself out on it.
* ElmuhFuddSyndwome: This is the way he speaks. At times it's hard to understand him because of it.
* ForcedTransformation: Edmond's transformed into a kitten at the beginning of the movie and turns back into a human at the end.
* HalfDressedCartoonAnimal: After being turned into a cartoon cat. It's especially pronounced because he covers his privates and runs for cover when he first realizes he's naked... only to wear a shirt and hat from one of his toys. He then shows no further embarrassment from wandering around with his bottom-half exposed.
* InformedFlaw: He's supposedly a scaredy-cat who lets his fear control him [[spoiler:until he learns to overcome it near the end]], but apart from a few moments of understandable hesitation in the face of danger (like Pinkie's goons chasing him), he's never shown letting his fear get in the way of doing what needs to be done.
* JourneyToTheCenterOfTheMind: [[spoiler:When it looks like Peepers is crushed in a wreck, Edmond mentally retreats into his own mind and has to overcome the phantoms of all the people who mocked and terrified him in order to snap out of it and save her.]]
* TheLeader: Of his, Patu's, Peeper's, and Snipes' team. Since Edmond is really a human who knows the most about the city they're trying to find Chanticleer in, the others tend to follow his lead.
* MeaningfulName: He's named after French writer Edmond Rostand, who wrote the play the movie was (very) loosely based on.
* TheMindIsAPlaythingOfTheBody: Edmond meows in surprise and licks himself when first turned into a cat, but it's mostly played for laughs and never comes up again.
%%* NobodyCallsMeChicken: Or rather, "Nobody Calls Me a Scaredy-Cat."

->'''Voiced by:''' Glen Campbell (English), Creator/JoseLuisOrozco (Latin American Spanish), Creator/TesshoGenda (Japanese), Jerry Williams (Swedish), [[Music/VazelinaBilopphoggers Viggo Sandvik]] (Norwegian)

->''"Well, my daddy taught me how to sing. And that's why this voice means everything."''

A rooster whose job is to crow so the sun knows to come up. Then one day he forgets to crow, and the sun rises without him. His so-called friends mock him and declare him a fraud, which causes him to leave the farm. Some time later, he gets a job in the city as an Elvis-esque performer and gets hundreds of adoring fans. Back at the farm, the same animals who shunned Chanticleer realise that he really did raise the sun, and with him gone, the Grand Duke of Owls shows up to cast the world in an eternal, rainy night. With the help of Edmond, the farm animals set on a journey to bring back Chanticleer and raise the sun once again.
----
* BerserkButton: Don't ''EVER'' mess with his friends, as Pinky very nearly found out when he verbally abused Goldie right in front of him while gloating about the capture of his friends.
* BigDamnHeroes: The moment he finds out what Pinky's been up to, he ''instantly'' abandons any further desire to work with the scheming filmmaker and escapes with Goldie in the middle of a film shoot to save his real friends.
* CockyRooster: A masculine-looking rooster with an exaggerated [[TopHeavyGuy top-heavy build]], in line with the stereotype of roosters as macho animals.
* DecoyProtagonist: Despite opening up on him, it's Edmond who is the real protagonist of the story.
* HeartbrokenBadass: His epic crowing and fighting prowess proves he's one tough rooster, but being laughed off the farm at the beginning of the movie hit him ''really'' hard.
* HeroicBSOD: He goes through this after seeing the sun rise without him and seeing his friends mock him. This prompts him to leave for the city.
* MrFanservice: All of his outfits show off a little of his chest.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: He's basically a [[{{Expy}} rooster version]] of [[ElvisImpersonator Elvis]] [[Music/ElvisPresley Presley]].
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: He immediately abandons his illustrious film career when Pinky reveals his true intentions.
* ThatManIsDead: Downplayed. He changes his name when he moves to the city and [[spoiler:when his friends return him to the farm and beg him to crow]] insists that he can only sing the Blues as "The King," not crow like Chanticleer.
* ThePowerOfTheSun: He can summon the sun through his crowing (as a matter of fact, his crowing is ''needed'' for the sun to manifest). This extends to [[spoiler:ordering it to ''rain down'' '''solar flares''']].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Patou]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/patou.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Phil Harris (English), Jorge Roig (Latin American Spanish), Creator/YusakuYara (Japanese), Per Myrberg (Swedish), [[Music/VazelinaBilopphoggers Eldar Vågan]] (Norwegian)
TheNarrator of the movie, and Edmond's staunchest supporter.
----
* AnimalStereotypes: Being a dog, he's naturally very brave and loyal.
* TheBigGuy: Of Edmond's team, Patou is definitely the muscle, and the ride when they need to move fast.
* NarratingTheObvious: He tends to tell you what's happening in the story while it's happening.
* RunningGag: Patu just can't seem to tie those doggone shoes!
* TeamDad: Since he's an adult unlike Edmond, and more level-headed than bickering Peepers and Snipes, Patou often fills this role.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Peepers]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peepers.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/SandyDuncan (English), Creator/MariaFernandaMorales (Latin American Spanish), Kazue Komiya (Japanese), Jessica Zandén (Swedish), Pia Borgli (Norwegian)
A rather rude and abrasive but ultimately very intelligent, resourceful, kind, and loyal mouse who gives Edmond a hard time about being a cat, but always comes through when he (and the gang) need it.
----
* BerserkButton: Sexism; something Snipes likes to push ''a lot''.
* CatsAreMean: Peppers I'd slow to warm up to Edmond because she believes in the stereotype, on top of Edmond learning TheMindIsAPlaythingOfTheBody when he tries to eat her
* CharacterCatchphrase: She tends to exclaim "Jumping Jehoshaphat!" when surprised or astonished.
* DamselOutOfDistress: [[spoiler:Near the end, she's trapped on a trailer that crashes into a water tower while Pinky's goons are pursuing them. The gang come back to save her, but she winds up saving them with a helicoptor she hotwired off-camera.]]
* GoGetterGirl: When Peepers puts her mind to something, no one can slow her down. Snipes tells her she should StayInTheKitchen? Nope, she's going to help find Chanticleer. Wants to steal a car to evade the bad guys? She's already hotwired it. Don't want to climb down to the bumper of a moving car to detach a trailer? She'll do it herself. [[spoiler:She'll also steal a helicopter with little effort.]]
* InsufferableGenius: She can a very confrontational and short-tempered know-it-all.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's pretty rude and dismissive of Edmond when they first meet, and is never afraid to speak her mind, but she's a good person under it all.
* TheSmartGuy: After Edmond, Peepers is the most clever and resourceful of the heroes. Good thing too, since she [[spoiler:saves the gang from falling to their deaths near the climax, and manages to steal a ''helicopter'' to get them back to the farm before it's too late]].
* SpeechImpediment: A rare positive example. Though she has a very pronounced lisp that Snipes likes to make fun of, Peepers is shown to be a very intelligent, capable, and resourceful type of nerd. She also doesn't consider her lisp to be a negative trait at all, but feels it makes her that much more special.
* ThoseTwoGuys: With Snipes, when they're bickering.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Snipes]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/snipes.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/EddieDeezen (English), Raul Aldana (Latin American Spanish), Creator/KenyuuHoriuchi (Japanese), Philip Zandén (Swedish), [[Music/VazelinaBilopphoggers Jan Einar Johnsen]] (Norwegian)
A rather rude, condescending, and food-obsessed magpie who's thrilled to go find Chanticleer since it means he can enjoy the sights (and food!) of the city.
----
* AnimalStereotypes: As a magpie, he's pretty easily distracted by shiny lights and food.
* {{Claustrophobia}}: Snipes is terribly claustrophobic. When the team is in a closed trunk floating through a river, Snipes panics and pokes holes in the trunk to get some air, nearly drowning them in the process.
* FearInducedIdiocy: Due to his {{Claustrophobia}}, Snipes nearly drowns the group in a panic attack when he pecks holes in the closed chest caught in a raging river, desperate for air.
* ForgotAboutHisPowers: When the team is about to plunge from a breaking ladder on a water tower, Snipes is shown flapping his wings beside them instead of, you know, giving the lighter-weight ones a lift? And when they do fall, ''he falls right beside them''. Maybe he just wanted to feel like part of the team?
* {{Jerkass}}: He can be kind of a selfish, lazy and hedonistic jerk who is quick to mock others.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Despite being an egotistical and dimwitted jerk and a sexist, he joins the Team with Edmond, to find Chanticleer to save the farm.
* TheLoad: Snipes tends to ''hurt'' the mission more than he helps, such as pecking holes into the toy chest they're underwater in (nearly causing them to drown), and getting them caught by [[TheDragon Pinkie's]] henchmen when they sneak into the theatre Chanticleer is performing in.
* MeaningfulName: Snipes is a magpie who likes to take ''snipes'' (rude, petty insults) at Peepers.
* ObsessedWithFood: To the point that he loses interest in the quest to ''save the farm'' because he'd rather get something to eat.
* StrawMisogynist: He's rude, obnoxious, and [[TheLoad useless]], and holds women in contempt. He often makes sexist comments about women to or in front of Peepers, who probably single-handedly demonstrates that being female does ''not'' diminish one's capabilities ''at all''.
* ThoseTwoGuys: With Peepers, when they're bickering.
* ThievingMagpie: Justified, he is a magpie and the bright lights distract him a lot.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Lasagna, by his own admission.

[[folder:Goldie]]
[[quoteright:290:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goldie_pheasant_6.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Ellen Greene (English), Creator/RocioGarcel (Latin American Spanish), Lio (French), Creator/YukoMizutani (Japanese), Pernilla Wahlgren (Swedish), Brit Elisabeth Haagensli (Norwegian)

-> ''"Love has said 'hello.' You don't know what that means, really means to me."''

A showgirl pheasant who was initially jealous of Chanticleer's recognition. Her boss, Pinky, decided to use her to distract Chanticleer from his desire to go back to his farm and she went along with it at first. However, as Patou told us beforehand, besides being smarter and nicer than she originally projected herself as, she also fell in love with Chanticleer for real.
----
* AnimalGenderBender: Its the male golden pheasant that bears golden, wavy plummage, while she's female.
* TheAtoner: She regrets helping Pinky in stopping Edmond from reaching Chanticleer, and works to make things right by helping him to save them.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler:At the end of the film, she's living on the farm with her and Chanticleer having two kids]].
* BecomingTheMask: Goldie is ordered by her boss Pinky (who is taking orders directly from the Duke), to act as a LoveInterest for Chanticleer, in order to keep him distracted and thus not crowing. However, she quickly genuinely falls for him.
* BrainlessBeauty: Subverted. She's actually a lot smarter than she looks, and nicer too.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Unbeknownst to most of the characters, but her cold jealousy toward Chanticleer soon melts into genuine love.
* DrivenByEnvy: Goldie is initially jealous of Chanticleer's success.
* {{Expy}}:
** Goldie's design is very reminiscent of Princess Daphne from the ''VideoGame/DragonsLair'' games if she were a mutant bird thing.
** Also her shiny, sparkling, revealing red dress makes her design similar to an anthropomorphic bird version of Jessica Rabbit. In fact, Goldie was an attempt to replicate the sex appeal of Jessica Rabbit.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: She turns out to be nicer than originally thought to be.
* HeelFaceTurn: She initially dislikes Chanticleer for stealing her spotlight, but falls in love with him upon becoming more acquainted with him. Though she wasn't exactly evil to begin with, just rather easily manipulated by Pinky.
* HiddenDepths: This is spelled out for the audience by Patou in his [[NarratingTheObvious incredibly helpful narration]].
-->'''Patou:''' Lucky for us, Goldie was a lot smarter than she looked, and a lot nicer too. She just didn't know it yet.
* HumanoidFemaleAnimal: She looks like a human woman with a beak compared to the (mostly-male) other animal characters.
* LiarRevealed: Refreshingly Averted. [[spoiler:After Pinkie tells Chanticleer that Goldie was supposed to keep him from finding out about his friends, you'd expect Chanticleer to get angry or reject her. But he quickly takes it in stride, instead focusing on how they can both rescue them.]]
* LoveInterest: To Chanticleer.
* MsFanservice: Goldie is a cute, but also beautiful pheasant showgirl; she wears her showgirl outfit throughout most of the movie.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Is immediately regretful of her actions towards Edmond when it accidentally exposes the entire group to Pinky, leading to their capture.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She was supposed to pretend to be Chanticleer's new girlfriend, but because of how kindly he treated her, she developed real feelings for him.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Grand Duke of Owls]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/grandduke.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/ChristopherPlummer (English), Francisco Colmenero (Latin American Spanish), Kosei Tomita (Japanese), Carl Billquist (Swedish), Nils Ole Oftebro (Norwegian)

-> ''"I positively loathe rrrock n' rroll."''

The main villain of the movie, a sun hating owl who drives Chanticleer away from the farm so he wouldn't bring the sun up anymore, and tries to keep the darkness forever.
----
* AbusiveParents: To Hunch, his nephew he not only [[ForcedTransformation subjects him to grotesque transformations]], but also emotionally and physically abuses him, threatening him with death at one point.
* AnimalStereotypes: The owl is naturally sophisticated, cultured, and evil.
* AxCrazy: This is less evident than his nephew due to his FauxAffablyEvil demeanour, but still there, most notably when singing about keeping Chanticleer from crowing or [[spoiler: almost killing Edmund]].
* BigBad: He was the one who hired a crow to drive Chanticleer away from the farm, and is determined to keep the night lasting forever.
* BerserkButton: The Duke hates Chanticleer with an unbridled passion, to the point where he'll attack people for simply saying Chanticleer's name.
* BreathWeapon: The Duke's magic is cast by exhaling clouds with star and moon shapes inside them.
* DarkIsEvil: He and his minions have a song literally called "We Hate the Sun" and he is the black cape-wearing BigBad of the movie.
* DisproportionateRetribution:
** {{Subverted|Trope}} when confronting Edmund for the first time. The Duke at first points out how Edmund broke his monocle ("These are expensive, little ''brat''!"), but admits that's not why he's come to kill the boy. Since he wants to keep TheNightThatNeverEnds, he won't let Edmund try to call back Chanticleer and thus the sun.
** His additional reason besides [[PragmaticVillainy wanting him out of the way for the sake of the endless night]] that he ruined Chanticleer's life is that he hates rock and roll.
* EvilUncle: Downplayed as Hunch is also evil, but the Grand Duke is the far more evil of the two. He does things to his nephew such as [[ForcedTransformation turning him into weird creatures]] when he's not emotionally or physically abusing him.
* FatBastard: Even for an owl, he has quite the gut. That doesn't let it stop him from antagonizing Chanticleer or his allies.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He's polite and well-spoken, but is prone to tantrums and really is a psychopath underneath it all.
* ForcedTransformation: The most notable aspect of his powers, is his ability to turn others into anything he wants. Notably, turning Edmund into a small kitten and subjecting Hunch to various humiliating transformations for angering him or making a huge blunder.
* HighClassGlass: The Duke originally wore one, but Edmond somehow broke it when he touched the Duke's picture in the story book and the Duke never bothered to replace it.
* HumiliationConga: He's bitten on the leg by Patou, constantly forced away by flashlights, knocked down by his nephew, has his eyebrows temporally shaven off [[spoiler: and then is shrunken down and hunted by his nephew immediately after his [[OneWingedAngel transformation into a tornado]]]].
* KarmicTransformation: [[spoiler: He has a penchant of turning others into small and degrading forms so he can eat them more easily. Chanticleer at the end with his crowing, manages to inadvertently shrink the Duke smaller than a mouse and then spending the last moments running away from his nephew who tries to eat him]].
* KickTheDog: [[spoiler: He almost kills Edmund by using his magical powers to strangle him, even though at that point Chanticleer or anyone else wasn't willing to fight back because he found his attempts very irritating.]]
** His treatment of his nephew in which he will subject him to [[ForcedTransformation degrading transformations]], emotional abuse and threats of physical violence.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: Both in terms of artistic design and Creator/ChristopherPlummer's vocal performance, the Duke is an owlish caricature of actor Creator/CharlesLaughton.
* OminousOperaCape: He wears one, he usually uses it for an emphasized wave or covers his body for a dramatic effect.
* OminousOwl: The name says all. He's a sadistic owl with a penchant of turning prey smaller to make them more digestible and wanting an endless night of rain.
* OneWingedAngel: [[spoiler: Turns into a tornado in the climax of the movie.]]
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: He wears a black and red cape and he is definitely evil.
* ResizedVocals: [[spoiler: After being defeated by Chanticleer, he is shrunk to the size of a shrew; in the process, his voice is reduced to a childish, near-incomprehensible squeak.]]
* SissyVillain: When not plotting to kill the heroes, he's baking, knitting or twiddling phone cords.
* SlasherSmile: He sports this a few times, most notably when gloating about Chanticleer never crowing to bring up the sun and when [[spoiler: he's a giant tornado by the end]].
* VillainsOutShopping: In one scene, he's shown happily humming to himself while baking a pie. In another, he's shown doing embroidery while relaxing on a rocking chair.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: The Grand Duke can change himself with his magic as readily as anyone else, changing in size at a whim and [[spoiler:becoming a mighty tornado in the film's climax]].
* WeakenedByTheLight: Owls are shown to hate bright lights here.
* WouldHurtAChild: Makes death threats towards Edmund and [[spoiler: even ''strangles'' him into unconsciousness in the climax]].
** Not to mention how he repeatedly [[ForcedTransformation turns his nephew into degrading forms]] when he's not threatening him with death, physically harming him or emotionally abusing him.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Hunch]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hunch_4.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/CharlesNelsonReilly (English), Arturo Mercado (Latin American Spanish), Creator/MasashiEbara (Japanese), Richard Carlsohn (Swedish), Anders Hatlo (Norwegian)

-> ''"Annihilation!"''

The Duke's annoying nephew who tries repeatedly to impress him, and ends up failing every time.
----
* AxCrazy: He's a pretty deranged owl, yet at the same time dim-witted.
* AllMenArePerverts: He's seen getting an eyeful of Goldie on the helicopter before getting smacked away.
* TheDogBitesBack: After years of abuse at the hands of his uncle, Hunch wastes no time raising hell for the Grand Duke after he's been shrunken down, chasing him into the horizon.
* HarmlessVillain: Despite being a psychotic guy, he's just not smart enough to deal with the heroes. Played with in that Patou notes that despite Hunch's general harmlessness, he's still a nuisance and is still able to hinder them on their journey, even if he's not an actual threat.
* MinionWithAnFInEvil: He tries to get his Uncle to like him by attempting to kill the main characters, but always ends up failing due to his own stupidity.
* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: [[spoiler:In the final scene, he goes after his now shrunken down uncle and plans to kill him with his swiss army knife]].
* SinisterShades: The Grand Duke of Owls gives him a pair so that he can go to the city without being harmed by its lights. [[spoiler:Later on, they prevent him from being weakened by the sun, so he can take his revenge on his uncle]].
* ThrowTheDogABone: After spending the movie being abused by his uncle, he finally gets a chance to take his revenge [[spoiler: after the latter has been shrunken down by the sun inadvertently to being smaller than a mouse, taking the opportunity to chase him into the horizon to either eat him or beat him up]].
* VerbalTic: Has two, three if you count Charles Nelson Riley’s distinctive laugh. He enjoys saying words that end with "-ation". His second is mimicking airplane noises.
* WellDoneSonGuy: He really only goes out on his missions to get his uncle to approve of him.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Pinky]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pinkyrad.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Sorrell Booke (English), Ricardo Lezama (Latin American Spanish), Toshiya Ueda (Japanese), Peter Harryson (Swedish), Roy Bjørnstad (Norwegian)

A greedy fox and CorruptCorporateExecutive who makes Chanticleer a star when he arrives looking for work in the city. Unbeknownst to the main characters, he's in the employment of (or at least allies with) The Grand Duke, and they both have a vested interest in keeping Chanticleer in the city; Pinky because "The King" makes him lots of money, the Duke because Chanticleer's crowing and sun-raising makes him miserable.
----
* AnimalStereotypes: [[FoulFox Being a fox, of course he is very cruel, cunning, and greedy.]]
* BlackmailIsSuchAnUglyWord: Tying up Chanticleer's friends and threatening to do worse if he doesn't agree to keep being his golden goose is not blackmail, that's ''showbiz.''
* CorruptCorporateExecutive: Of the music industry, he keeps Chanticleer under his thrall through lies and blackmail. Additionally, he works with the Grand Duke in order to keep the rooster from crowing, keeping the world in endless night and potentially flooded.
* TheDragon: He is one to the Grand Duke. Not only does he directly work for The Duke, but he is far and away the gang's biggest obstacle in getting Chanticleer back due to his savvy, connections, and minions.
* FatBastard: He's an overweight ManipulativeBastard who's a huge JerkAss. He also works with the Grand Duke, fully knowing his plan would cause eternal night and the world to potentially flood over.
* FatSweatySouthernerInAWhiteSuit: Fat? Check. Sweaty? Implied. Southern Accent? Check. Fancy white suit? OK, so his suit isn't actually white, but he's got the rest down pat.
* {{Greed}}: His motivation for keeping Chanticleer in the city? All the money he makes.
* ManipulativeBastard: Convinces Chanticleer that his friends don't care about him (and employs Goldie to [[DistractedByTheSexy "entertain" him]] when they come looking for him) in to keep him in the city so he'll keep making him money. He also convinces Goldie to go along with his "bad" plan to keep him away from his friends, despite her reservations, by convincing her they're bad people trying to hurt him.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: If Chanticleer is Elvis, Pinky is Col Tom Parker, Elvis's manager who allegedly embezzled millions from his client and who some fans still blame for encouraging the excesses that led to the King's death.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: In spite of not having the arcane powers of the Duke and just being the employer of Chanticleer, he manages to trap Edmund and the others, succeeding where the Duke and his Owls failed. If not for Hunch's incompetence, Pinky would've won.
* VillainousBreakdown: When Chanticleer manages to escape, Pinky screams how he's ruined and will be bankrupted without his star.
