The Pokemon fanfiction series ''Operation GEAR'', having numerous characters, naturally leads to a sizable trope list. Beware, some spoilers may be unmarked.

[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder: Main Characters]]

Matt and his friends, who travel together seeking the answers to their questions.

!!Matt Chiaki
The leader of the group of four, later five. He is haunted by guilt following the deaths of Rich Mistbloom as well as a girl named Eleanor Laplace [[spoiler: and later Agenta]]; he is desperate to find the truth behind these deaths, which he feels responsible for, despite his suspicion that they are all connected. To this end, he is seeking to find the legendary Pokemon Reshiram whose flames burn to reveal the truth.

He has begun challenging the battle facilities offered by the Frontier Society in Johto, looking for clues toward Reshiram's location.
-----

* AllForNothing: "Eternal Flame" reveals that [[spoiler:he cannot find Reshiram by searching for answers to his questions, as Reshiram only appears to people who ''already know'' a truth they would burn the world down to have realized. Everything he did to this point, including becoming a {{Cyborg}}, was meaningless.]]
* AndThenWhat: Nekou presses him more than once on what he plans to do after having his questions answered. Much to her distress, he doesn't intend to keep living.
%%* BadassLongcoat
* BadLiar: [[spoiler:Nixon saw right through his attempts to pass off a fake Life Orb.]]
%%* BladeBelowTheShoulder: One in each arm.
%%* CelibateHero
* ChefOfIron: For bonus points, he literally ''is'' made of iron by way of his cybernetic body.
* ClassicalAntiHero: He's powered through several significant crises brought on by Polaris or other antagonists, in spite of his many flaws.
%%* ColorMotif: Blue and silver.
* CombatMedic: He was able to [[spoiler:remove a bullet from Nekou's shoulder]] despite having to improvise most of it.
* CowardlyLion: He truly prefers to avoid conflicts, but watch out if you provoke him enough.
* CursedWithAwesome: Isn't proud of his mechanical body, despite what it can do.
* {{Cyborg}}: Was burned and then trapped in an exploding aircraft. He recognizes that he should have died, but he survived and became a cyborg to regain use of his body. He also claims to be doing it for his sister, who might benefit from advances in the technology.
* DeathSeeker: Stopped just short of explicitly identifying himself as one at the end of ''Goldenrod City Under Siege (Part 2)''. Nekou didn't take it well.
** In "Father," he all but comes right out and says he planned not to live after his quest was complete.
* {{Determinator}}: Survived his horrific injuries through sheer willpower and his refusal to die before seeing his sister again.
* DidNotGetTheGirl: In Eleanor's case, it was because of her death. Sheena couldn't accept his obsession with seeking the truth about it and they parted ways, albeit on good terms.
* DishingOutDirt / ExtraOreDinary: Though he has a wide variety of Pokemon, he generally trends toward Ground/Rock and Steel-types.
* ElectronicEyes: Has an artificial left eye.
* {{Expy}}: Given the {{Cyborg}} elements and BadassLongcoat, he appears to be one of [[Anime/CodeGeass Jeremiah Gottwald]].
* ExtremeDoormat: Made even worse by the outsized personalities he's surrounded with, although he seems to be slowly getting better.
* FireForgedFriends: With Nekou. Between time-traveling, a war, an insane oil baron and now a cult wishing to overthrow society, not to mention helping Olivia though some devastating times, they sure have been through a lot together.
* GrewASpine: Comes and goes, but his viciously attacking the Pawniard after they attack Olivia and [[spoiler:his utter ''snapping'' when Cassy shows up]] stand out as particularly strong examples.
* GuiltComplex: Consistently blames himself for the deaths of Rich, Eleanor [[spoiler: and Agenta]]. This has affected him to the point where finding the truth about the deaths and atoning by helping Olivia may be the only two reasons he sees for living.
* HeroicBSOD: He is particularly prone to these when his plans for helping or protecting people fail. His breakdown when he learns [[spoiler:he can't find Reshiram just to get the answers he wants]] stands out.
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: He believed that he had to shield Olivia from the truth about Rich's fate because he did not want her to have to lose her innocence and grow up too quickly like he did.
* ILetGwenStacyDie: He continually beats himself up for the fates of those around him who lost their lives, especially Eleanor.
* LargeHam: Has a dangerous tendency to lapse into this, and often pays the price when he does.
** He largely kept it in check for [[spoiler: his battle with Dahlia and it actually worked out.]]
* MyGreatestFailure: The deaths of Eleanor, Rich, [[spoiler: and Agenta.]]
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: During his AxCrazy breakdown after [[spoiler: Agenta's death]], he [[spoiler: viciously beats Zoroark with his bare hands ''and nearly wins''.]]
* OutGambitted: [[spoiler:Nixon saw right through his plan for the fake Life Orb, with tragic results.]]
* ParentalSubstitute: Made himself into one for Olivia, but the result wasn't positive.
* PerformanceAnxiety: Has trouble with speaking or performing before a crowd, as seen at his speech for the ALEA system in Whitegold City and his battle against Dahlia at the Battle Arcade. He appears to overcome it in the former by distracting himself with speaking about his invention, while in the latter case, reminding himself that he has Olivia's support made him feel better.
* PleasePutSomeClothesOn: At first he directed this at Nekou rather often. Then he got used to her habits.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: [[spoiler:After Agenta dies.]]
* ShipTease: Unexpectedly got some from his end with Nekou at the end of "Alekhine's Gun," in which he claimed to like traveling with her because it is fun.
** In "Father," he all but admitted he can't imagine '''not''' being around her.
* SurvivorGuilt: He keeps beating himself up for being the one to survive instead of Rich, Eleanor [[spoiler:and Agenta]] because he believed they all deserved to live more than him.
* TeamChef: Author notes reveal that cooking is one of his hobbies.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Hamburgers.
* TragicKeepsake: His pocketwatch, which contains pictures of Eleanor and Sheena in it. He keeps it as a reminder of everything he's lost or given up.
** Also, the pin from the Mossdeep Space Center, which reminds him of happier times for himself and Amanda.

!!Nekou Langley [[spoiler:Lalume]]
Rude, profane, and more than a little selfish, Nekou Langley is a woman encountered by Matt and Olivia at the Indigo Plateau early on in The Firestorm Rebellion. After helping herself to a free meal courtesy of a credit card stolen from Matt, she ends up joining the group to pay off her debts and quickly assumes the role of Matt's "bodyguard". Despite all of her quirks, she seems to genuinely have a soft spot for Olivia, and seems to have a much more caring side as well.

[[spoiler:She's really a Team Rocket member with the Admin rank, skilled in undercover spy work. From the beginning she's been on a mission to observe Matt's activities and interactions with Polaris.]]

[[spoiler:For a list of the tropes relating specifically to her presence only within Team Rocket, see the Team Rocket tab.]]
-----
* ActionGirl: Capable of incredible feats of acrobatics, hand-to-hand combat and weapon usage - basically anything she can do to win a fight. [[spoiler:She's really a DarkActionGirl.]]
* [[spoiler:AmbiguouslyEvil: While she '''is''' a Team Rocket member, there's no denying that she does have a good side.]]
* AnimalThemeNaming: Though it's completely unknown why she has the name 'Nekou,' [[spoiler:her berserk animalistic state]] may be a clue.
%%* AntiVillain: A mixture of types I and II.
%%* AttentionWhore
%%* BadassBookworm
* BadassLongcoat: Gets a black trench coat in "Goldenrod City Under Siege (Part 1)."
* BerserkButton: If you value your life, don't threaten her or things she cares about.
* BigEater: Almost unstoppable. Will eat absolutely anything, and in large quantities.
* [[BigBrotherInstinct Big Sister Instinct]]: She feels the same drive to protect Olivia that Matt does, but she exercises it in a much different way, framing herself as a CoolBigSis and friend to Olivia rather than the stiff ParentalSubstitute Matt became.
* BloodKnight: Clearly enjoyed her fight with Chaos far too much; it was noted that she actually had to fight down her urge to continue attacking him and struggled to walk away.
* BodyguardCrush: She started off making romantic/sexual advances on Matt to {{Troll}} and manipulate him, but the emotions seem to keep getting rawer and more genuine with time.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: She feels far more comfortable in her filled-out frame after Ariana encouraged her to embrace her own satisfaction.
* BrainyBrunette: Her ridiculously long black hair is one of her most striking physical traits, and she's far smarter than her behavior might let on. It's implied she's rather skilled in both chemistry and computers, at the very least.
* ByronicHero: [[spoiler:It's implied that she doesn't always follow Giovanni's rules either. Even as a Team Rocket member, the only one she consistently answers to is herself. She fits most of the standards.]]
* TheCameo: Nekou makes an appearance in the final scene of ''The Gardener of Gratitude'', where she and Matt are on a train to the Indigo Plateau, and he is telling her about the events depicted in that story.
* CastingAShadow / SoulPower: Her Pokemon are all Dark or Ghost-type, except for [[ElegantGothicLolita her Gothorita]].
* ColorMotif: Black and red.
* [[spoiler:ConvenientlyUnverifiableCoverStory: Had claimed to have "grown up in Mahogany Town," but her "parents moved a lot."]]
* CoolBigSis: Immediately makes herself into this for Olivia.
* CursedWithAwesome: [[spoiler: Can turn into an unstoppable beast in moments of extreme stress, but is clearly embarrassed and troubled by this ability.]]
* CustomUniformOfSexy: She designed it herself to fit what she liked, even.
* TheCynic
* DamselInDistress: It might have seemed like she would be one in "S.O.S." when [[spoiler:she was captured by Giovanni and Genesect]], but in reality...
* DamselOutOfDistress: ...she [[spoiler:rescued herself via Alter-Nekou's power well before her would-be rescuers actually reached her.]]
* DarkIsNotEvil: Well, she certainly hasn't done any outright 'evil' things.
* DeadpanSnarker: Her words almost hurt more than her knives.
* DespairEventHorizon: '''Something''' happened in "The Weight of the World (Part 1)" that sent her completely over the cliff. It's not quite clear yet what it was, but it's implied to involve Ariana's illness.
** She goes even further after what happened to her while fighting Ghetsis and the Shadow Triad, prompting her to reach out to Matt sincerely for help instead of just continuing to mess with him.
* DrowningMySorrows: She eventually confesses that at least some of her binge drinking is to make terrible dreams go away so she can sleep.
* EnemyWithin: The voice that Nekou terms her "other self." This entity acts as a sort of negative influence on her, urging her to take selfish, destructive actions she normally wouldn't. Its influence is prominently seen during her fight with the Shadow Triad in Ecruteak City; after she is gravely wounded the voice seduces her into falling into her 'primal' state with promises of physical pleasure.
* [[spoiler:FemmeFatale: Notorious for seducing her targets to get intelligence. Thing is, she never turns it off, making it hard to tell where "Nekou Langley" and "Nekou Lalume" begin and end.]]
* FireForgedFriends: With Matt. See above.
* ForcefulKiss: Steals one from Matt at the end of ''The Victory Star of Fate''.
** Does it again at the end of ''Goldenrod City Under Siege (Part 2)''.
* GeniusBruiser
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: Indicative of when she's gone into her "Primal Nekou" side.
* GogglesDoSomethingUnusual: Her second pair of glasses are multipurpose scanners and computer displays.
* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: And how!
-->'''Matt:''' “More beer already? I find it hard to believe you can actually down more beer after how much you must have had last night.”
-->'''Nekou:''' “Shut up. Everyone knows the best way to come off a night of heavy drinking is one more beer and a huge plate of hot wings.”
** She sleeps with beer cans under the sheets, if the ending of "Reaching for the Arcade Star (Part 2)" is any indication.
* HiddenDepths: She is a rude, foul-mouthed woman with habits for stealing things and heavy drinking, but underneath that surface, she shows surprising amounts of compassion and intelligence. The scene in which she debates Matt regarding the relations of Literature/MobyDick to his character is a great example.
* InSeriesNickname: Called "Black Cat" several times by Chaos, though it is unknown what this means.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Unusually, she's one for Olivia and somewhat for Matt as well.
* MadScientist: Portrays herself as one, even reading chemistry books casually in her spare time.
* MissingMom: [[spoiler:Ariana]] isn't her real mother.
* MoodSwinger: She wildly goes from lighthearted, profane actions to extreme moodiness and everything in between. How much of it is deliberate can't be determined.
* MysteriousPast: Little to nothing is currently known about who she is or where she came from. [[spoiler:Even the revelation that she's a member of Team Rocket doesn't really reveal much about her past.]]
** [[spoiler:Becomes ConvenientlyUnverifiableCoverStory with TheReveal that she's a Team Rocket spy.]]
* NominalHero: [[spoiler:How much of her personality and motivation is for Team Rocket?]]
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Especially when she has a point she wants you to hear.
* OneWomanArmy
* [[spoiler:PowerMakesYourHairGrow: When she goes berserk, her already-long hair grows to reach her feet.]]
* PrettyFreeloader: Matt's almost always on the hook for her wild, exaggerated desires.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: You could count on one hand the number of times she's been otherwise on one hand and still have fingers left.
* ShipTease: Has gotten some with Matt, for example kissing him at the end of ''The Victory Star of Fate''.
** She outright announces her intention to seduce him to [[spoiler:Rosalie]] at the end of "Sweet Little Lies."
** In "Father," it turns sincere. It's both cute and heartbreaking.
* StepfordSmiler: A mix of Type A and Type C.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: [[spoiler:Gets these when she changes into her berserk state.]]
* SuperSenses: Her senses are heightened ordinarily, but when she becomes Primal Nekou, they escalate to nearly omniscient levels.
* SuperStrength: In her animalistic state, but has strength greater than a normal human even in normal times.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Changes into a vicious, animalistic state (dubbed "Alter-Nekou" when Olivia witnesses it) in moments of extreme stress.
* SweetTooth: Loves candy and sugar on top of everything else.
* TheMentor: To Olivia.
* [[spoiler:TheMole: For Team Rocket, which seemingly ends up cruelly reversing many of the tropes about her improving relationship with the rest of the group when you find out.]]
* {{Troll}}: She could make messing with others a national sport.
* {{Tsundere}}: While she has traits of both the "classic" and "modern" types, she leans more toward the classic type, as it took forever for her softer side to truly come to the surface.
* TsurimeEyes
* VictoriasSecretCompartment: A favorite of hers, beginning with the bacon bits in ''The Firestorm Rebellion''. [[spoiler:She also kept the memory card with all her data from spying for Team Rocket on it there.]]

!!Olivia Mistbloom
The daughter of the late Rich Mistbloom and now Matt's student. She is still unaware of the fact her father is dead and still sincerely believes that he abandoned her and disappeared. For this reason, she is seeking to win both Gym Badges and Contest Ribbons, believing that if she does well enough, her father will return.

[[spoiler:She later learns the truth about her father's fate and the hopelessness of her original goal, gravely harming her outlook on the world.]]
----
* ActionGirl
* ActionGirlfriend: Brings Monroe into her fight while barely batting an eye at his crush on her.
* AttentionWhore
* BadassAdorable: she seems like your typical cute teenage girl, but watch out when she's angry.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Oh God, Olivia.
* BrattyHalfPint
* BreakTheCutie: Just one horrible thing after another. WordOfGod has stated that she had to hit absolute rock bottom before being able to grow as herself instead of being defined by Rich.
* BrokenBird: Especially [[spoiler:after learning the truth about Rich's death. ''The Angel of Reckoning'' Chapter 9 is a chronicle of her breakdown.]]
* CynicismCatalyst: [[spoiler:Her learning the truth about Rich's fate. In the span of one chapter, she is completely broken, changing from the outgoing, cheerful girl she was previously to a cold, stoic EmotionlessGirl who struggles to understand even her basic day-to-day existence.]] She recovers a fair deal, until [[spoiler:the combination of the shock from thinking Rich is Father and the misunderstanding between her and Anabel causes her to completely snap, turning her into a much more bitter, angry version of herself.]]
* DeliberatelyCuteChild: Just try to tell her no.
* {{Determinator}}: Has resolved to honor Rich's memory by standing up for his ideals, manifesting in the form of fighting and destroying Polaris. She sticks to this new goal like glue. [[spoiler:Until she becomes convinced Rich ''is'' Polaris's leader, causing the glue to come off.]]
* FluffyTamer
* FriendToAllLivingThings
* GenkiGirl
* HiddenDepths
* IWillFindYou: Heartbreakingly subverted. Has every intention of tracking down her father... who she is completely unaware is dead. [[spoiler:Not anymore... until she becomes convinced he ''is'' alive, at which point she reverts right back into this, but for different reasons.]]
* LittleMissBadass: Granted, it was one of his weaker ones, but she still managed to defeat one of Matt's Pokemon.
* NeatFreak: Her Minccino.
* PluckyGirl: The way she keeps coming back from the terrible things she experiences is nothing short of ''stunning''.
* RichBitch: Played with in an interesting way. She is aware of the advantages her background gives her, and quite visibly struggles with the meaning of them after Ghetsis begins calling out such things in his speeches.
* SanitySlippage: Suffers it bad after she [[spoiler:learns of Rich's death.]] She eventually recovers and gets tougher for the experience.
* StepfordSmiler: Type A.
* ThereAreNoTherapists: There's no denying it, this girl needs help. Matt and Nekou are only able to provide it to varying degrees.
* TookALevelInBadass: She's evolved from the dependent and somewhat unbalanced innocent girl she began as into a hardened badass planning to confront Polaris.
* TragicDream: Her initial goal of reuniting with her parents, which is impossible because of her father's death.
* TragicHero: She is the only character in the story who is unaware of Rich's death. She fully believes he will come back, if she works hard enough. [[spoiler:The truth doesn't affect her very positively, let's say.]]

!!Bunny Spruce
An old colleague of Matt's who has done archaeological work with him in the past. She first appears at the Indigo Plateau to tell them that her search for the ruins of Argyros Town has been completed. In the group of four, she provides a more level-headed approach to problems than the others and doesn't hesitate to take the lead in solving them.

She is a guest character originally from the story ''Nothing, Everything'' by Bay Alexison.
----
* AdventurerArchaeologist
* BadassNormal
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She's tough enough to hold her own right alongside Matt against a commander of Polaris.
* {{Bookworm}}
* BrainyBrunette
* {{Foil}}: To Nekou. She is much lighter in appearance, and ''way'' more reserved and polite in behavior.
* NiceGirl
* OnlySaneMan

!!Anabel Mistbloom
Olivia's mother, and the commissioner of the Frontier Society following Rich's death. The years haven't treated her kindly since then. She later pulls out of her depression, becoming much more like her old self, and joins the main cast.
----
* AscendedExtra: Added to the main cast in "The Iron Maiden."
* BrokenBird: Horribly. She recovers considerably when she joins the main cast, though she's still clearly haunted.
* MamaBear: Once she joins up with the others, heaven help you if you do '''anything''' to endanger Olivia in any way. You ''will'' be sorry.

!!Amanda Chiaki
Matt's beloved younger sister. Despite her blindness, she is a powerful trainer as well as a teacher at Earl's Pokemon Academy in Violet City.
----
* AscendedExtra: Joins the main cast in "The Iron Maiden."
* CallBack: Bunny had met her years earlier, and questions why she is no longer in a wheelchair as soon as she gets the chance. [[spoiler:The reason is that she has since received a pair of prosthetic legs.]] This is consistent with her appearance in ''Pokemon XD^3: The Waves of Truth'', in which she was, indeed, in a wheelchair.
* CoolTeacher: Her students - even Avril - seem to respect her quite a bit. [[spoiler:After the smackdown she laid on Zinzolin for threatening them, it's not hard to see why.]]
* CurbStompBattle: [[spoiler:Zinzolin never had a '''chance''' against her.]]
* EyesAlwaysShut: Averted, though in her appearance in ''Pokemon XD^3: The Waves of Truth'', it was played straight.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Polaris]]
The main antagonists of ''The Angel of Reckoning'', Polaris is a cult that worships the divinity of DNA and the double helix shape. Operating in the Tohjo Continent, the specifics of their larger goals are unknown, but they have scientific, political and military means and plot to create a revolution to leverage power for their plan. They oppose any blending of organic and technological matter, which they consider 'fouling' the purity of DNA.

Polaris is led by a council of ten masked individuals called Chromosomes, known collectively as the Sacred Helix.

Tropes that apply to the entire organization include:
----
* ApocalypseCult: Their true purpose.
* BlackShirt: The organization's true goal is to [[spoiler:serve Dark Matter by resurrecting it.]]
* CoolMask: Every Chromosome except for Ghetsis wears one.
* DivideAndConquer: In order to gather support, the organization heavily attempts to raise the anger of ordinary people against the rich and powerful that control the Pokemon League system.
* {{Expy}}: The Sacred Helix reflects influence from several other similar groups. In terms of their tone and purpose, they are similar to things such as [[WesternAnimation/{{Metalocalypse}} the Tribunal]] and [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion SEELE]], while in terms of appearance they clearly are influenced by the [[Anime/StarDriver Glittering Crux Brigade]].
* TheOrder
* OrganizationWithUnlimitedFunding: Averted. One of Finansielle's roles on the Sacred Helix is to keep the organization's budget in line.
* PathOfInspiration: Initially present themselves to the people as this, but...
* RestartTheWorld: What they intend to do by destroying the order governing society and [[spoiler:resurrecting Dark Matter.]]
* ThemeNaming: Polaris's bases are named after components in nucleic acid.

!! First Chromosome/"Father"
The leader of the first section, and the head of Polaris. At the outset of ''The Angel of Reckoning'', he is absent from the Sacred Helix, having sent Archer to represent him in their meetings.
----
* [[spoiler:ArchnemesisDad]]: [[spoiler:It's heavily implied, and believed by multiple people including Olivia, that Father is none other than Rich Mistbloom himself, somehow resurrected and forced to serve as Polaris's leader.]]
* BigBad: He made only one brief appearance until the end of "The Weight of the World (Part 2)", where he made a stunning display of his dominance over Polaris.
* CreatingLife: Through the Azrael Project.
* DarkMessiah: Acts as this to much of Polaris's rank-and-file.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: His desire is to be reunited with unspecified family members. [[spoiler:If he really is Rich, that only makes it even more tragic.]]
* EvilDuo: One with Finansielle.
* TheFaceless: Was originally only seen via video screen with his face completely obscured. Later, he remains completely masked (with his voice altered for good measure) even when most of the rest of the Sacred Helix have had their identities revealed.
* FaceHeelTurn: It's implied he wasn't such a bad person once [[spoiler:before Finansielle found him. Especially if he's Rich.]]
* [[spoiler:FallenHero]] Heavily implied.
* HiddenAgendaVillain: Praeses mentions that when all three Angels were within Polaris's grasp in Unova, Father refused to allow anyone to know Azrael's true identity, insisting that he would capture her himself.
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: Tries to rationalize the gruesome details of Azrael's creation in this way.
* KnightTemplar
* PutThemAllOutOfMyMisery: His entire reason for wanting to destroy the Pokémon League [[spoiler:and to "return the world to a natural state" by resurrecting Dark Matter]] is because his child was one of the countless children drawn to the life of a traveling trainer by the Pokémon League. He points out, however, that he is far from the only one to have suffered this loss and casts himself as a warrior for those who have.
* ScaryShinyGlasses
* VisionaryVillain

!! Second Chromosome/"Praeses"/[[spoiler:Tobias]]
The leader of the second section, who wears a mask with a Darkrai motif. [[spoiler:He's the governor of the Tohjo Continent, Tobias.]]
----
%%* PresidentEvil

!! Third Chromosome/Ghetsis Harmonia
The leader of Section Three and the only Sacred Helix member to not wear a mask. He was the leader of Team Plasma in its affiliation with Polaris but it was folded into the main group after his failures in Unova.

Today, he is planning to overthrow the Sacred Helix and seize full control of Polaris for himself. To that end, he has jailed Concordia and Anthea and set them to work deciphering ancient texts the other Chromosomes do not yet know about. In addition, he has ordered the Shadow Triad to hunt down his son N and the Tenganist prophet, though for what ends is currently unknown. As part of the Sacred Helix, he is Polaris's spokesman, delivering their message of revolution to the people via his influential speeches.
----
* ArcVillain: Speculated to be the BigBad of the first two story arcs, based on upcoming chapter titles. Eventually confirmed.
* AristocratsAreEvil: Still has his delusions of being royalty. In the past, he was one of Unova's elite citizens.
* BadBoss: Poor Chaos.
* BlackCloak
* DarkIsEvil: He was always fond of dressing in dark clothing indicative of his true nature, even as a younger man.
* DeadpanSnarker
* TheEmperor: Harmonia is not just his surname, he openly addresses himself as the "King of Harmonia" now.
* EvilCripple: He has both his arms in this version, but he's no less frail and is often shown struggling to walk with his cane. Somehow, in spite of this, he is physically strong enough to knock Matt around and even ''pick him up by the neck.''
* EvilOverlord: Rules his division of Polaris with an iron fist. He did the same with Team Plasma in the past, and in his ideal future, he'd do it for ''everything''.
* {{Expy}}: Of Marquis Albert de Blois, the main antagonist of ''{{Literature/Gosick}}''. Both are aristocratic political figures with megalomaniacal plans to obtain supreme power, both abduct an innocent performer to further their goals via giving him a child with special abilities he wishes to exploit, and both face their downfall due to their children and the abduction victims who mothered them. They even look similar, having blond/green hair and monocles, although this is a concidence that already existed in canon.
* ItsAllAboutMe: He could absolutely not care less about Polaris's real goals. He just wants to ride them for his own benefit and then take control of the organization so he can rule the world.
* {{Jerkass}}: Well, yeah.
* ObviouslyEvil: He hasn't changed much over the years. Trevor felt troubled by his mere presence just minutes after meeting him, for example.
* OutGambitted: He believed he was using the rest of Polaris as pawns in his latest scheme to rise to power, but his completely unsubtle personality allowed them to read him like a book and use him instead.
* RenegadeSplinterFaction: Leader of Team Plasma as one within Polaris.
* TheReveal: At the end of "The Weight of the World (Part 1)", he [[spoiler:has a Transcendence of his own.]]
* SlasherSmile: Gets an utterly '''terrifying''' one as he watches the Shadow Triad [[spoiler:murder the Wise Trio.]] Later does it repeatedly during his speech in Ecruteak City.
* SmugSnake
* TheSocialExpert: He knows how to work a crowd. This may be a result of his previous life as one of Unova's elite.
* TheSociopath: There's a side that the public sees of him... and then there's his true face, the one that Anthea and Concordia (unfortunately) see.
* StaffOfAuthority
* TheStarscream: Is openly plotting to overthrow the rest of Polaris's leadership so Team Plasma can again rise to power. He barely even tries to hide it.
** He even goes as far as to tell the Shadow Triad to prepare to kill other Polaris members in ''The Pursuit of the Truth'', giving a window into just how far his thirst for power will go.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: Though he benefits from a rather generous government benefactor covering up Team Plasma's deeds, his speeches nevertheless attract considerable attention and discussion amidst the public.
* WouldHurtAChild / WouldHitAGirl: Threatens both [[spoiler:Professor Elm's]] son and wife to ensure his cooperation. [[spoiler:It's later implied that he already killed them both.]]

!! Fourth Chromosome/"Finansielle"/[[spoiler:Gabriella Bouchard]]
The leader of the fourth section; a woman who conceals her identity carefully with a helmet and armor. She manages the budget of Polaris, and has been seen to be very harsh with how the group's funds are spent. She also gives orders to the other Chromosomes for missions in Father's absence. [[spoiler:She is Gabriella Bouchard, the head of the Angel Corporation.]]
----
* AlphaBitch: Behind the mask is [[spoiler:one of the most wealthy and influential businesspeople in the world.]]
* ConspicuousConsumption: Averted. Though Polaris seems to have an overwhelming amount of funds on hand, she does not believe in this trope.
* TheDogWasTheMastermind: Let's be honest, who she really is wasn't exactly the least suspicious person out there. Nobody noticed.
* TheDragon: Despite Archer being Father's assigned envoy to the Sacred Helix, when it comes to distributing assignments and constructing plans in his absence, Finansielle is in charge, keeping a close eye on everything going on.
* [[spoiler:DragonInChief]]: [[spoiler:She's the real founder of Polaris. Father? Merely someone she recruited to her cause.]]
* DragonWithAnAgenda: Once her true identity is revealed, she abandons all pretense of sharing the same goals as Father. [[spoiler:It's even implied that his faith is not as strong as hers and he needs her to keep him going.]]
* EvilDuo: With Father.
* HiddenAgendaVillain: She's pretty unique among the many villains in this story, as her motives are virtually completely unknown. It's indicated she too lost something and wants revenge, but beyond that, everything's a question mark.
* {{Humanshifting}}: Without warning, this is revealed in "Team Rocket VS. Team Plasma - Best Wishes from the Past (Part 2)" to be an ability she possesses. Considering she used it to impersonate Rich in a way that implies she knows about Olivia's visions, she clearly has no qualms about using it for utterly '''terrifying''' purposes.
* ManBehindTheMan: Virtually everyone inside and out of Polaris sees Father as the cult's leader, but in reality, it's Finansielle that drives the agenda.
* MorallyBankruptBanker
* {{Sadist}}: Unlike Father, who seems to genuinely feel some level of remorse for what Polaris has done, Finansielle retains no such emotions. She's more than happy to demolish anything and everything she needs to in order to drive society into hopelessness and despair, all so [[spoiler:the Forbidden Beast]] can feed on that despair.

!! Fifth Chromosome/"Séduire"/[[spoiler:Cassy Natsuka]]
A young woman who leads the fifth section; her mask combines with her hair to create the appearance of an Entei. Unlike her colleagues, she seems much more lax in her duties, though this doesn't seem to be out of laziness...

[[spoiler:In "Alekhine's Gun," she is unmasked, first by Matt then literally through her own actions, as Cassy Natsuka, his ex-girlfriend of questionable sanity. She's gone even further down the rabbit hole over the past five years...]]
----
* BerserkButton: She can't even stand to '''see''' other women around Matt... or even girls, judging from how she reacted to Olivia.
* BrokenBird: Breaks once when [[spoiler:Nekou defeats her in more than one way]], but completely when [[spoiler:she sees Geminus's face.]]
* ClingyJealousGirl: '''Refuses''' to even let Matt be around any other female but herself. Leads to a hilarious exchange with Nekou, whose DeadpanSnarker tendencies run strong enough to fight back.
-->'''Séduire''': "Be quiet! You took him from me too! He's mine and mine alone! Now say my real name!!"
-->'''Nekou''': "Psycho ex-girlfriend or something? I don't even care that she called me a whore, because she's so obviously compensating..."
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: When Matt rejects her and then piles on by saying that he has fun traveling with Nekou - [[spoiler:something he never had with Cassy]] - she goes blank as she sinks into madness.
** Later happens a second time when [[spoiler:she sees whoever is under Geminus's mask.]]
* EvilRedhead
* FaceOfAnAngelMindOfADemon
* GreenEyedMonster: Her jealousy during the confrontation in Ilex Forest is painfully obvious to see.
* HopelessSuitor: It's hard to see Matt having any interest in someone who is hoping to change the world using a doomsday cult to be with him. [[spoiler: It might be that he already '''has''' rejected her...]]
** [[spoiler:Confirmed in "Alekhine's Gun." He already rejected Cassy once, and makes it quite clear he won't put up with her anymore in the present.]]
* IllKillYou: When she [[spoiler:intends to rip Nekou and Olivia apart with her bare hands. It doesn't work out.]]
* LackOfEmpathy: She could care less about anyone, even coldly viewing '''Olivia''' as competition as the younger girl is suffering terribly.
* LongingLook: Several times in quick succession in "Alekhine's Gun."
* LoveMakesYouCrazy
* LoveMakesYouEvil
* NotGoodWithRejection: Yeah, that's an understatement.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Her actual eye color, no less.
* SayMyName: Séduire begs Matt to say her real name when they meet, but he initially refuses.
* {{Yandere}}: Her main motivation for bringing about Polaris's future world, no matter the cost, is to be with Matt.
** And then "Alekhine's Gun" happened.

!! Sixth Chromosome/"Mercury"/[[spoiler:Fumika Chiaki]]
The Braviary-masked leader of section six. Her first major role is to retrieve the Meteonite piece collected by [[spoiler:Mr. Pokemon.]]

[[spoiler:She is confirmed in "Transcending Humanity" to be the Mercury from ''Pokemon XD^3: The Waves of Truth'', real name Fumika Chiaki, Matt's mother.]] How this will affect the plot is as yet unknown.
----
* [[spoiler:ActionMom]]: Able to rip elite Team Rocket operatives to shreds without breaking a sweat.
* CurbStompBattle: Utterly ''annihilates'' Jessie and James. Her Electivire is only defeated through Jessie using a cheap shot, and it doesn't even slow her down.
* TeamMom: Has shades of this, at least in her relationship with Séduire. Once they are out of the formal setting of the Sacred Helix's meeting room, they get along quite well.
* WomenAreWiser: Is the only Chromosome to [[spoiler: vote against Geminus's appointment, apparently troubled by his origin.]]

!! Seventh Chromosome/"Athleta"/[[spoiler:Lance]]
The seventh section leader. His mask is themed after Dragonite. [[spoiler:He is the leader of the Tohjo Continent Elite Four, Lance the dragon master.]]
----
* BadassCape
* TheQuietOne: Doesn't speak much during Sacred Helix meetings, except for casting votes.

!! Eighth Chromosome/"Jeunes"/[[spoiler: Dr. Mitchell Yung]]
The leader of the eighth section, whose mask is Mewtwo. He is a scientist brought on after the departure of Dr. Zager and oversaw the mysterious Project J four years ago.
----
* BadBoss
* DramaticUnmask: Subverted in that Matt recognizes him right away, but he doesn't remove the mask until it's broken off.
* EvilGenius
* GoodScarsEvilScars: He has a huge, gruesome scar cutting diagonally across his face.
* MadScientist
* ShapeshifterWeapon: His various Mirage Mewtwo employ these. The first one seemed a bit more limited in scope compared to the second, which was able to freely shapeshift parts of its body into a wide variety of weapons and appendages such as a BladeBelowTheShoulder or the RubberMan legs of a Hitmonlee.

!!Ninth Chromosome/"Getriebe"/[[spoiler:Factory Head Thorton]]
Section nine's leader. He is noted for his short stature, Electivire-themed helmet and mask, and his section's technological inventions.

He is in charge of the Purine Base, where Finansielle has ordered him to gather data on Pokemon battles. [[spoiler:The Purine Base is really the Battle Factory in Goldenrod City, and he is its Frontier Brain, Factory Head Thorton.]]
----
* EvilGenius
* MadScientist: He and his section created the electricity-launching suit used by Geminus.
* OnlySaneMan: At the Purine Base with Jeunes and Colress. When they're celebrating Matt's defeat, he logically asks what will happen should their enemy return the next day.
* [[spoiler:TreacherousAdvisor: Averted in that he doesn't ''want'' to help Matt, and actively works to avoid being put in the situation in the first place.]]

!!Tenth Chromosome/"Geminus"
Geminus is the the tenth, newest and final Chromosome of the Sacred Helix, being appointed to the council by a vote of six-to-one in "A New Rival and a New Mission". He first appears in Chapter 1, robbing the Pewter Museum of the Adamant and Lustrous Orbs. After being appointed, he adopted the name Geminus and donned his Sigilyph mask.

He seems to be familiar with Séduire, and Mercury claims to be disturbed by him. In "Alekhine's Gun," he revealed his face to [[spoiler:Cassy aka Séduire]] but his identity was not revealed to the reader.
----
* AffablyEvil: He's awfully nice to [[spoiler:Cassy]]...
* [[spoiler: ArtificialHuman: He is the result of Project J, having originally been a brain synapse that was given a new body.]]
* EnigmaticMinion
* [[spoiler: MurderIsTheBestSolution: Kills the two paramedics called by Cassy for no real reason other than convenience.]]
* PetTheDog: He shows what looks like genuine concern and affection to [[spoiler:Cassy]].
* SlasherSmile
* SmugSnake

!!Excan/Lysandre Flordelis
A wealthy tech and media mogul from the Kalos region, known for his philanthropic endeavors using the profits from his corporation, Lysandre Labs. After joining with the Angel Corporation in a series of major ventures, he became a member of Polaris and the new Third Chromosome (replacing Ghetsis), using the alias "Excan."
----
* AdaptationExpansion: His backstory from the games and anime is expanded upon, explaining that his StartOfDarkness came when he discovered that a town his foundation was aiding following its destruction by a rampaging Gyarados actually caused said rampage by polluting its environment. He subsequently went AxCrazy and finished the destruction himself using the Gyarados (which he had captured), and while standing among the rubble, felt a newfound sense of power to act on his urges.
* AffablyEvil: When he meets Matt, Nekou, Olivia, Bunny and Monroe, they are immediately put off by his intimidating appearance. He then proceeds to engage them in a surprisingly fair-minded conversation about Polaris and taking action for the good of the world.
** Worth nothing he may not actually be evil in this universe, because it is unclear if the events of ''X and Y'' actually happened or not. So far, he only expresses frustration at being unable to help fix what he sees as the world's problems, without any mention of Team Flare.
*** Nevermind, he is. He just happened to learn about Polaris before fully forming the idea for Team Flare in this timeline.
* FieryRedHead
* SanitySlippage: Surprisingly, this is seemingly averted [[spoiler:at first]] compared to his official canon self. In his first appearance he holds a perfectly reasonable, open-minded conversation without veering off into any of his infamous rants.
* WildHair

!!Archer
A former Executive of Team Rocket who seems to have betrayed his old team to become a member of Polaris. He is seen to be high in rank, acting as Father's envoy to the Sacred Helix in the First Chromosome's absence.
----
* LightIsNotGood: Stands out in the darkness of the Sacred Helix chamber with his white suit and silvery hair.
* SmugSnake
* TheMole: When he returns to confront his old "allies" from Team Rocket, he reveals that he actually was an undercover agent working for Polaris the entire time. When his initial plan to destroy Team Rocket failed, he abandoned the cover.

!!The Shadow Triad: Darkness, Pestilence and Chaos
A trio of ninjas who act as Ghetsis's loyal servants.
----
* BadassCrew
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: Follow Ghetsis's orders without question, even when he tells them to kill other Polaris members.
* {{Ninja}}
* PsychoSupporter
* TerribleTrio
* ThemeNaming: Several themes. Their names reflect Pokemon they are known to have; Absol (Darkness), Accelgor (Pestilence) and Banette (Chaos). They also relate to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Finally, the names reference the theory that the Shadow Triad are the triplet Gym Leaders of Striaton City in that their initials match the Japanese names of said Gym Leaders - '''D'''ent, '''P'''od and '''C'''orn.
* TheStarscream: Technically, as they obey Ghetsis's orders to help him rebel against the rest of Polaris.
* VillainTeleportation
* WhiteHairBlackHeart

!!Zinzolin
Another leftover from the days of Team Plasma's independence, Zinzolin is an elderly man who acts as Ghetsis's deputy much as he did in the past. His main job is to go out into the public and spread the beliefs of Polaris, increasing the effectiveness of Ghetsis's speeches.
----
* AnIcePerson: All of his Pokemon except Empoleon are Ice-type.
* KickTheDog: Puts Amanda - who is blind - into his sights for an attack during the protest at Earl's Pokemon Academy. She doesn't even know he's targeting her, believing instead that he's aiming for the students.

!!Dr. Colress Antimony
An expert on Pokemon strength that is called in by Finansielle to aid in developing a genetically modified strain of Pokerus. He jumps at the chance to join the scheme, hoping to find the key to the perfect DNA that will show him the peak of evolutionary potential.
----
* AffablyEvil: He's a bit egotistical, but he's not above such things as joking about Finansielle's clothing in a lighthearted manner.
* EvilGenius: Polaris's entire science team couldn't complete the genetic code of the altered Pokerus, but merely by glancing at their research he can confidently say that he can finish it. He quickly does so, and creates a series of other inventions in short order as well. Notably, he is responsible for restoring all the Fairy-type Pokémon to the world through his revival of the Pixie Plate.
* ForScience: His motives are incomprehensible beyond that he just really, ''really'' wants to find a genetically flawless DNA.
* FourEyesZeroSoul
* MadScientist: Just look at how excited he gets to be a part of Polaris's plan. Later, seeing [[spoiler:Alter-Nekou]] drives him giddy, even though [[spoiler:she]] could have easily killed him if [[spoiler:she]] wanted. Perhaps ''because'' of that.
* MorallyAmbiguousDoctorate

!!Chimere
A Polaris member who participated in the Azrael Project experiments overseen by Dr. Zager. She was the one who carried Azrael, but died while giving birth.
----
* BodyHorror: We never see her before her death, but by the dialogue of Dr. Zager and the other scientists, it certainly sounds like carrying Azrael did ''something'' to her.
* DeathByChildbirth: Her suffering this is the entire opening scene.
* GoneHorriblyRight: What happens to her, for all its horror, is apparently exactly what Father intended. Dr. Zager wasn't quite in the loop.
* PosthumousCharacter: She died during the events of the flashback to 1987.
* {{Retcon}}: She wasn't named in the original version of the opening scene.
* ScreamingBirth: How she gets introduced.

!!Barbara
Dr. Zager's aide during the Azrael Project experiments.
----

!!Azrael
The titular Angel of Reckoning. She was created by Polaris and Dr. Zager in 1987, but all other details on her are unknown.

The original Azrael was a resident of a village that worshipped [[spoiler:Dark Matter]] five thousand years ago, and was intended to become its host.
----
* DesignerBabies
* FetusTerrible: Comes with being created as a genetically modified being meant to bring about the end of the world.
* HiveQueen: Her intended purpose.
* TransHuman

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Team Rocket]]
Once the powerful villainous team that held Kanto and Johto in the palm of their hand, Team Rocket has been reduced to a struggling group few in number. Despite this, they now fight to defeat Polaris, who stand in their way of rising again.

Tropes that apply to the entire organization include:
----
* AntiVillain: Though not entirely clear if it's Type I or Type III yet.
* MeaningfulName: Specifically, the mission they undertake to combat Polaris, Operation Atlas. They literally have the weight of the world on their shoulders, because if they fail and Polaris wins, the world won't be the same again.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: The members still remaining constitute quite a bizarre lineup: [[TheDon Giovanni]], [[EnigmaticMinion Stacia]], [[TheAce Pierce]], [[TerribleTrio Jessie, James and Meowth]], [[LadyDrunk Ariana]], and [[MadScientist Dr. Zager]].

!!Dr. Gabriel Zager
A scientist and high-ranking Team Rocket member. He was once the highest ranking scientist in Polaris, but left the group fourteen years after the Azrael Project began. He eventually joined Team Rocket and began providing Polaris' secrets to them.
----
* CreatingLifeIsBad: Clearly did not like where the Azrael Project went.
* LabPet: His Joltik/Galvantula. He's had it since at least 1987.
%%* MadScientist
%%* MessyHair
%%** EinsteinHair
%%* MissionControl
%%* GrumpyOldMan
%%* JerkWithAHeartOfGold
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Quit Polaris and joined another criminal organization to stop them.

!!Giovanni
The boss of Team Rocket. He is currently under house arrest [[spoiler:but not anymore]] after a failed mission by the weakened remnants of his team. This has not disabled his operations, however, as by working with Dr. Zager and Ariana, he continues carrying them out through others.
----
* AffablyEvil: Surprisingly so. Polaris's presence puts him on the side of the good guys for a change.
* BadassLongcoat: Dons his signature trench coat from ''Pokémon [=HeartGold=] Version and [=SoulSilver=] Version'' once he goes on the move.
* CompositeCharacter: Besides combining multiple iterations of the Giovanni character from various media, this Giovanni also becomes the equivalent to [[spoiler:Essentia. He is captured by Polaris and trapped in a mechanized suit that brainwashes him and forces him to control Genesect at Colress's direction, positioning him as a major antagonist in the chapter "Runaway."]]
* DisappearedDad: For Silver.
* DishingOutDirt: Apparently retains his Gym specialty of Ground-type Pokemon.
* TheDon
* EyepatchOfPower: When he returns after his apparent death, he has an eyepatch covering his damaged left eye.
* EyeScream: When he's struck down by Ghetsis's Aegislash, he suffers a nasty wound to his left eye.
* FedoraOfAsskicking
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold
* LivingADoubleLife: He was the Viridian City Gym Leader while secretly being the boss of Team Rocket. After [[spoiler:his apparent death]], this is no longer the case.
* ManipulativeBastard: He's under house arrest. Think that'll stop him from fighting Everton and Polaris? [[spoiler:Later, he blatantly ignores it and escapes with the help of Jessie, James and Ariana.]]
* ManOfWealthAndTaste: Still has his mansion filled with the remnants of his once-glamorous life.
* [[spoiler:UncertainDoom: He is struck down by a slash to the face from Ghetsis's Aegislash near the end of "The Weight of the World (Part 1)." The mortality of the wound is uncharacteristically unclear for the pattern the story usually follows, but with Ghetsis claiming Giovanni's body, the truth is difficult to determine.]]

!!Stacia
Giovanni's loyal secretary. She is a young woman with fanatical devotion to her boss, but she seems to be keeping a secret.
----
* BerserkButton: Do not even ''look'' at Giovanni funny.
* EnigmaticMinion
* {{Yandere}}: Hinted at during her appearance in "Reaching for the Arcade Star (Part 2)," in which it is noted she would "kill or die" for Giovanni, while knowing enough about him to recognize subtle hints in his facial expressions.
* UndyingLoyalty

!!Pierce
A high-ranking Team Rocket spy who acts as a liaison between Jessie, James, and Meowth and the leadership of the team.
----
* TheAce: Has the fewest quirks of the remaining members of Team Rocket, instead opting to stick to the rules and take his job seriously. From the looks of it, he's reaped the rewards of that choice.
%%* BadassLongcoat
* HiddenDepths: Is revealed to be [[spoiler: one of the Tenganists. His dialogue suggests there's much more going on with him than it first appeared.]]

!!Jessie, James, and Meowth
The infamous trio of Team Rocket. Previously discharged from duty following their operations in Unova, they have been pressed back into service due to the actions of Polaris.
----
* CurbStompBattle: Their first direct encounter with members of Polaris '''does not end well.'''
* TerribleTrio: Of course. [[spoiler:However, it becomes a duo when Meowth is forcibly inducted into Polaris.]]

!!Ariana Lalume
The highest-ranking executive in Team Rocket and the direct field leader in Giovanni's absence. Though serious about her job, she has an extremely carefree lifestyle.
----
* AffectionateNickname: Rosalie calls her "Ari."
* TheBaroness: Now the second-in-command of Team Rocket, under only Giovanni himself.
%%* BigEater
%%* HardDrinkingPartyGirl
%%* LadyDrunk
%%* NobleDemon
* ShoutOut: One to ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}'' comes during an exchange between her and Dr. Zager.
-->'''Dr. Zager''': “I can’t say I think that’s a good idea. I recommend you stay here, Ariana.”
-->'''Ariana''': “And because that’s one dumb-ass suggestion, I’m going to ignore it."
* TeamMom: Especially to [[spoiler:Nekou, who calls her "Maman" and has taken her last name.]]

!!Proton
Another of the remaining Rocket Executives. He's known for his cruelty and self-aggrandizing nature, though it's not clear how much of the former is because of the latter.
----
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: Escapes from Ilex Forest as soon as [[spoiler:the Time Gate vanishes.]]

!!Professor Rosalie
A wheelchair-bound scientist who works for Team Rocket. Despite her disability, she is quite upbeat and good at her job. She is a geneticist with a particular interest in the field of botany.
----
* DeadpanSnarker: Gets her share of snark in.
* GoodSmokingEvilSmoking: Though she's fairly affable, she's still a Team Rocket member. Soon after being introduced, she starts smoking an ornate pipe.
* TheMedic: Acts as this to the other Team Rocket members.
* MorallyAmbiguousDoctorate: Turned to Team Rocket to pursue her scientific interests free of the constraints the mainstream scientific community placed on her.

!!Ada
A young woman who is a member of Team Rocket, first introduced conducting surveillance on Polaris in Goldenrod City with Rosalie and Trevor. She is an analyst with a particular skill in creating false identities for [[spoiler:Nekou, owing to her obsession with her.]]
----
* BadassBookworm: While she used to hide from others in Team Rocket's libraries and is extremely intelligent, she also is implied to be at least a decent trainer, as she became a Team Rocket member by defeating a recruiter.
* FaceHeelTurn: Of sorts. She first worked for Bill as an analyst of the PC Storage System's usage before putting her skills to darker use for Team Rocket.
%%* LipstickLesbian: With [[spoiler:Nekou.]]
%%* ShrinkingViolet

!!Trevor
Another member of Rosalie and Ada's squad within Team Rocket. He used to be an actor at Pokestar Studios, until he joined Team Rocket under mysterious circumstances. His specialty is making costumes and refining the personalities of the characters Ada creates for [[spoiler:Nekou]].
----
* AffablyEvil: Seems like a nice enough guy despite his allegiance to Team Rocket.
* EightiesHair: Boasts one hell of a mullet.
* {{Expy}}: With his name, and as a former actor who now works for a villainous leader, he could be said to be one of [[spoiler:Trevor Slattery from ''Film/IronMan3''.]]
* ShoutOut:
** In one of his very first appearances, he paraphrases the infamous "I will find you, and I will kill you" line from ''Film/{{Taken}}''.
** It is said his most famous movie role was as the villain in the first "Full Metal Cop" movie, which besides being a reference to a movie series in the [[VideoGame/PokemonBlack2AndWhite2 games where Pokestar Studios appeared]], is an even more obvious reference to ''Film/{{RoboCop|1987}}'', having been made in 1987.

!![[spoiler:Nekou Lalume]]
The leader of Ada, Trevor and Rosalie's unit. WalkingSpoiler. Highlight at your own risk.

[[spoiler:For tropes relating to her outside of Team Rocket, see "Main Characters."]]
----
* EveryoneLooksSexierIfFrench: Ambiguous if she's actually "French," but [[spoiler:she has adopted Ariana's French last name, and is a FemmeFatale who enjoys seducing targets.]]
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Of her true identity:
** [[spoiler:She has long, black hair with red streaks. Red and black are the colors of Team Rocket.]]
** [[spoiler:Ada made an EarlyBirdCameo at the end of ''The Firestorm Rebellion'' talking to her.]]
** [[spoiler:Near TheReveal, she adopts a uniform very clearly based on the ones worn by Stacia, Ada and Trevor.]]
** [[spoiler:Her constant open revulsion to anything having to do with Team Plasma or Polaris.]]
** [[spoiler:Her antagonistic relationship with Silver.]]
** [[spoiler:In "Disconnection," she was constantly working on her laptop. In that same chapter, the other Team Rocket members were discussing a "field agent" who was uploading the Atlas program to the International Police's servers.]]
** [[spoiler:She seemed openly dismayed when she found out Olivia and Silver went to the Slowpoke Well in "Alekhine's Gun." This was probably because she knew Proton was there.]]
** [[spoiler:Her familiarity with Chaos, and later Colress's stated desire to have a rematch with "Miss Lalume," hint at her past interaction with Team Plasma.]]
** [[spoiler:Her ability to assure the siblings in Ilex Forest that Team Rocket didn't steal their Ivysaur, because of her familiarity with Team Rocket's style. Ironically, one line earlier, the brother accused her of being a Team Rocket member.]]
* ThePowerOfActing: When spying, she plays characters created by Trevor and Ada as cover.
* WalkingSpoiler: [[spoiler:Her strictly-Team Rocket tropes have to be separate from her 'other' self's, otherwise it's obvious she has a massive secret to hide.]]

A mysterious, angry young man who seems to have a grudge against Olivia and Matt. He is obsessed with "showing the world the truth" about Rich Mistbloom at any cost, claiming that Rich caused him years of agony.
----
* BerserkButton: Any mention of Rich makes him pretty mad.
* CurbStompBattle: Lays out a terrifying one on [[spoiler:Olivia]] using his [[spoiler:Gurdurr]] until [[spoiler:Nikolai interferes.]]
* {{Determinator}}: Is so stubbornly, nearly foolishly determined to get his revenge on those that he determines close to Rich, that he doesn't learn his lesson ''from trying to defeat a Heatran with a Drowzee.''
%%* GreenEyedMonster:
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: [[spoiler: In the first half of his battle with Olivia in New Bark Town, he incapacitates her Roselia by having his Timburr target her legs. Olivia later uses this same tactic against him to turn the tide against Drowzee with her Minccino.]]
* IrrationalHatred: Even when he returns following his long period out of focus during his training with Clair, his obsession with destroying Anabel and Olivia hasn't lessened at all. It's only gotten worse, even, as he marches straight into a confrontation with Anabel the moment he sees her.
* MotiveRant: Falls into boasting about his intentions to tell the world the truth about Rich [[spoiler: when he is about to defeat Olivia's Minccino with his Drowzee]] and when Matt interrupts him, he completely flies off the handle.
* PetTheDog: Despite his angry exterior, he appears to care for his Pokemon.
* {{Revenge}}: Getting this against Rich and his image is Renzo's whole motivation.
* TheRival: To Olivia, Matt, and anyone else he identifies as being associated with Rich.

!!Trista
An old friend of Matt and Olivia's who participates in both battles and contests. In the past, she battled against Anabel at a Grand Festival.
----

!!Silver
A trainer encountered by Matt at the Frontier Society tournament. They were due to battle but after Matt defeated his father Giovanni during Team Rocket's raid on the stadium, he withdrew, intending to train more first. He reappears in ''The Angel of Reckoning'', seeking revenge against Team Rocket and his father.
----
* AntiHero
* BloodKnight
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Being the son of the Team Rocket boss sure qualifies.
* EnemyMine: More than ever. Despite his open disdain for them, he works with Matt's group because, as Looker points out, they can help him get revenge on Team Rocket. [[spoiler:He and Nekou, on the other hand, can barely contain their hatred for each other, and it would appear that he's ignoring her for now in order to target his father instead.]]

!!Avril
Monroe and Helena's ill-tempered sister. She strikes up a rivalry with Olivia as soon as they meet in the Trainers' School.
----
* ACupAngst: Tries to give Olivia this, but doesn't really succeed.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: She shows signs of this toward Olivia.
* TheRival: Despite her rude treatment of Olivia, she also sees her as a serious competitor and openly wants her to get as strong as possible.

!!Nikolai/N
A strange young man with the power to read into a Pokemon's heart and heal it. He is first seen saving Olivia from a humiliating, brutal defeat at Renzo's hands before helping both Matt and Olivia train.

However, he has a dark secret - despite not remembering being so, he is the prince of Team Plasma, and therefore Ghetsis's son. Ghetsis has sent the Shadow Triad to capture him, as he is vital to Ghetsis's plan.
----
* AbusiveParents
* CurbStompBattle: Utterly destroys Renzo's Gurdurr using his Kangaskhan.
* FriendToAllLivingThings

* NiceGuy: Heals Renzo's Gurdurr and all of Olivia's Pokemon without being asked, then talks to Matt's Pokemon and helps him realize that Eelektrik wants to battle more.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: The Tenganists]]
The Tenganists are a race of humans whose heritage dates back thousands of years. Their most defining trait is the ability of "Transcendence," which many of them possess. This ability manifests itself in different ways based on the user; for example, Nikolai is able to directly speak with and heal Pokemon, while Matt points out that Sheena's Transcendence allowed her to connect directly with the hearts of people and Pokemon.

A Tenganist settlement existed at the town of Argyros in 1850, as seen in ''The Firestorm Rebellion'', but in the modern era the Tenganists are a dying people targeted by Ghetsis's genocide plot. The few that remain have gathered around a mysterious woman calling herself a prophet and forged an alliance with Team Rocket to wage terrorist attacks against Polaris as a last stand, calling themselves the "Tenganist Liberation Front."

!!The Prophet/[[spoiler:Sheena Carnet]]
A mysterious woman acting as a figurehead for the remnants of the Tenganist people and the leader of the Tenganist Liberation Front. Not much is known about her except that she has a young child (probably less than a year old) and is somehow connected to Ghetsis, Anthea and Concordia, someone in Matt's group and (now) Pierce.

She was revealed to have somehow survived the first attack in Ghetsis's plans of genocide for the Tegnanists, and because of this, she is seen as a symbol of their hope to defeat him.
----
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: She appears as a protagonist in the remake of ''The Gardener of Gratitude'', during which she establishes something Matt later recalls during ''The Angel of Reckoning''. This was earlier in the timeline than any other point prior to the remake's release.
* BerserkButton: Though she recovered from it quickly, she utterly ''snapped'' when Pierce mentioned Saeko Oryo's name to her.
* BrokenBird: She's strong on the outside, but it's pretty clearly a thin shell. She gets a little better, but it takes a significant amount of time.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: It's hard to know exactly what she must have seen when Ghetsis attacked her home, but it is easy to imagine it being horrible considering how she acts whenever thinking of him. She claims that her identity was taken by him in an earlier chapter.
* DarkMessiah: Is seen as a beacon of hope for the dwindling number of Tenganists remaining in the world, who consider her as such because she survived the beginning of Ghetsis's genocide.
* DespairEventHorizon: It's heavily implied she wasn't a terrorist mastermind and warrior before she survived Ghetsis destroying Michina Town.
* TheEmpath: Her Transcendence gives her the ability to connect with the hearts and minds of other living things, mainly Pokémon and humans.
* TheFaceless: Her face is almost entirely obscured by shadows from her cloak's hood.
* HiddenDepths: "The Weight of the World (Part 1)" offers some softer aspects of her personality. She wishes to spare the lives of Jacob and Looker, asks Sylpha to stay behind for her own safety, and keeps surprisingly ordinary things in her room such as a movie poster.
* InTheHood

!!Anthea & Concordia
Two young women held captive by Ghetsis. They were first seen being forced to perform before the Sacred Helix in a presentation of secrets of the Tenganist people. Later, they're freed from Ghetsis's custody and join the Tenganist Liberation Front to help the Prophet create a sanctuary for their people.
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: They have the golden and purple hair their sprites in the original ''Black and White'' games had, instead of the greenish-yellow and pink hair of their more familiar ''Black 2 and White 2'' and anime appearances.
* AgeLift: In the canon of the games and anime, Anthea and Concordia are of similar age to N and are his stepsisters. This universe instead presents them as being at least 20 years older and has Concordia as N's mother.
* BrokenBird: Both of them.
* DamselInDistress: Kept chained in an electronic cage by Ghetsis, who forces them to decipher their peoples' secrets for him while subjecting them to physical and verbal abuse that includes heavily implied starvation.
* HairAntennae: Concordia.
* StockholmSyndrome: Despite the above, at least Concordia shows signs of this, addressing Ghetsis as "Lord Ghetsis" in much the same way his actual followers do.
* TheStoryteller: In their first appearance, they were used by Ghetsis to tell other members of the Sacred Helix a story about the Day of Reckoning.

!!Alesia
One of the Tenganists who follow the Prophet. Her Transcendence gives her the power of healing, which she uses to fill her role as the group's nurse.

!!Sylpha
A young member of the Tenganist Liberation Front whose Transcendence allows her to predict the weather.
----
* OrphansOrdeal: Her parents were slaughtered by Ghetsis and the Shadow Triad, and she was only spared because the Tenganist Liberation Front rescued her during the attack.

!!Mewtwo
An artificial Pokémon created by scientists years ago. Following a long period of wandering the world to find its identity, it came to live at the Sinjoh Ruins and allied with the Tenganists taking refuge there.
----
* CompositeCharacter: Of the main Mewtwo featured in ''Anime/PokemonTheSeries'' and ''Anime/PokemonTheFirstMovie'' and the female Mewtwo that appeared in ''Anime/PokemonGenesectAndTheLegendAwakened''. It retains the female voice of the latter for its default form, and can transform into both Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y, the former of which sees it revert back to its original male voice. These traits are explained by Dr. Fuji, the scientist who created Mewtwo, having used some of his daughter Amber's DNA in the process of engineering Mewtwo's genes. Later on, Polaris captured Mewtwo and experimented on it further, causing these dormant genes to emerge.

!!Kratos
A hero who lived five thousand years ago, he was originally from Michina in northern Sinnoh, but traveled around the world to spread the wisdom from the Life Orb. He was involved in the battle that destroyed Argyros Town originally and was the one who used the Life Orb to seal away Zoroark, however, his wife Pandia was the first sacrifice.
----
* PosthumousCharacter

!!Saeko Oryo
An oracle who lived in the Tenganist holy land in the early 1900s, Saeko Oryo was a young woman whose Transcendence granted her the ability to see the past and future. During one of their adventures, Sutter Chiaki and Jacob Alexison befriended her, and she showed them her home. These peaceful times didn't last, however; under mysterious circumstances, Saeko was tried and was to be burned as a witch, but in her desperation to survive, she carried out an act that resulted in the destruction of the village and its people.
----
* BurnTheWitch: In a fit of irony, it is heavily implied that her attempt to avoid this fate - swallowing a partial Jewel of Life - ended up dooming her to burn along with the rest of the holy land's people.
* PosthumousCharacter
* [[{{Seers}} Seer]]: Her Transcendence gave her the ability to see the past and future.
** Implied to have become TheOphelia after her sentencing in a witch trial.

----
* EmperorScientist: [[spoiler:His backstory from the games is expanded on, revealing that he was an alchemist who discovered the way to create Jewels of Life from Arceus's Life Plates, a process that is implied to have been mastered by no human for two thousand years.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: Knowing who this guy is will not spoil that much in ''The Angel of Reckoning''... but it '''will''' spoil [[spoiler:the ''X & Y'' video games.]]
* [[spoiler:WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: The story about his actions to revive his beloved Pokemon are still present in this universe.]]

* KissOfDeath: It's only her namesake, after all! She got it from her calling card of leaving a bloody kiss on her victim's lips.

* BunnyEarsLawyer: She's a goofball who lapses into bouts of childish glee at seeing new technology, shows little restraint in referring to a '''princess''' by a casual nickname, teases a creature that said princess's kingdom worships like it's just another acquaintance, and is seemingly ''more interested'' when she finds out the "statues" in the palace museum are bodies mummified in gold. None of this takes away from her immense talent as an engineer.
* [[MrFixIt Ms Fix It]]: Repairs the broken truck the team finds at the mining camp despite having little direct experience with the technology. She even has the ability to intuitively understand even technology she has never worked with before.
* NotEnoughToBury: Anything left of her after the detonation of the skyship bomb likely never reached the ground.
* WrenchWench: The defining characteristic of this version of Eleanor. As mentioned above, she traveled to La Ciudad Dorada in the first place because of its unique machines. She also possesses MachineEmpathy, as shown off by her ability to use, diagnose and repair machines she hasn't seen before based only on her intuition.
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: When she learns that Matt unwittingly designed the Galactic Bomb, Eleanor encourages him by saying he created his machines for good purposes, and it has no reflection on him if someone takes them to use for evil.

!!Count Fernando VIII
Rosalita's brother and a nobleman in La Ciudad Dorada who is obsessed with protecting the kingdom from external threats.
----
* AlasPoorVillain: His demise is drawn out and comes completely after he has given up on his ambitions. He is so broken, in fact, that the reason he meets his fate at all is because he could not forgive himself for what he had done. Once he finally understands the truth of the past, he can do nothing but urge Rosalita to be the wise leader La Ciudad Dorada needs, even though he can no longer walk beside her.
* AlwaysWithYou: [[spoiler:Even after everything he did, Rosalita still feels his presence encouraging her to go on while she gives her coronation speech.]]
* BadassCape: Spends much of the story wearing an elegant red one with ornate gold trim. He ultimately discards it to make his escape from the skyship.
* DarkMessiah: Sees himself as one, having been driven mad by the external threats La Ciudad Dorada faces and believing that the only way to protect his beloved home is to awaken Regigigas and use it as a weapon.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: He is far more composed when it comes to his impending demise than Rosalita is. It mostly is thanks to him seeing his fate as a fitting punishment while also seeing that Rosalita will be the ruler he hoped he could be himself.
* LossOfIdentity: He built his identity completely upon the belief that he would one day be La Ciudad Dorada's king. When things didn't go according to plan, his inability to come to terms with it and determine what his reason for existing was gradually drove him insane.
* MalevolentMaskedMan: He wears a mask that is noted to resemble a Dusknoir when he pays Sutter a visit.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: When he sees the destruction his plans are causing in his beloved home first-hand, he snaps and lashes out as he struggles to come to terms with his actions. Once [[spoiler:his army and Regigigas are freed from his control]], he breaks down fully and attempts to walk back his final trap by [[spoiler:warning Rosalita not to smash the control gauntlet and trigger the bomb]] but fails. This ultimately leads him to conclude he has no place in La Ciudad Dorada and confirm once and for all that he should exile himself by [[spoiler:drinking from the Fountain of Life to see if he gains its power.]]
* SelfMadeOrphan: He murdered his parents, the previous king and queen, after going off the deep end and believing they weren't acting to protect the kingdom.
* StartOfDarkness: While it is noted by Rosalita that Fernando always had an ego, he was harmless and loving until the day Shaymin chose her to access the throne instead of him, forcing him into a downward spiral of jealousy and paranoia about his place in the world.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: He looks very similar to the other male members of his family.
* TragicVillain: As the chapters go by, it becomes more and more apparent that he doesn't enjoy what he's doing, but he is too blind to be able to see the mistakes he's making. It is not until his [[spoiler:death due to the Fountain of Life's curse]] that he realizes the truth about his life and is able to show his true self to his sister again.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: His behavior in the flashbacks to his childhood with Rosalita are ''heartbreaking'' when compared to what he became. At one time, he was a playful and loving brother who wanted nothing more than to fulfill his life's purpose alongside Rosalita. When the positions became reversed, however, he couldn't cope.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: Until Rosalita reveals his actions in her address to the kingdom, the people firmly believe in his image as a generous prince who sponsors the theater.
* VillainousBSOD: Experiences one when Matt points out to him the destruction his actions are causing in La Ciudad Dorada, ultimately leading to his MyGodWhatHaveIDone detailed above.

!!Rosalita
The Doradan princess and Fernando VIII's sister. She is accused by her brother of killing their parents and plotting to sell the kingdom out to invaders, but the truth is far more complex than anyone imagined.
----
* BadassNormal: Possesses no superhuman attributes [[spoiler:until she gains immortality, anyway]] but is still overwhelmingly powerful through a combination of physical training with Edrei, extensively training her Pokémon, and her strong will.
* {{Determinator}}: She does waver sometimes, but always returns to her resolution to accomplish her purpose no matter what.
* InSeriesNickname: Eleanor fondly dubs her "Rosa." Noel, meanwhile, gives her the more derisive moniker "Princess."
* PrettyPrincessPowerhouse: Her distinctive blonde hair gives her a classical princess image, and you do '''not''' want to cross her and end up in a Pokémon battle with her. She's skilled enough to defeat even the likes of [[OlympusMons Regirock and Registeel]].
* TomboyPrincess: Is a Rapidash-riding enthusiast who spends so much time outdoors that she has a dark tan. She has also undergone intensive training in Pokémon battling to gain the strength to lead. It is later revealed that she trained with Edrei to be a knight before she knew she would be queen, and continued said training even after finding out.
* TookALevelInBadass: She was a very different person in her childhood, having a much more meek personality. Years of training with Edrei and the other up-and-coming guards helped her embrace her tougher and more determined side.
* TranquilFury: Following her conversation with Fernando as she puts the defensive wall up around La Ciudad Dorada, she reacts to his intent of fighting her by knighting her friends and donning a suit of armor to go into battle herself. She doesn't break down or lash out at all, she just acts with a deadly serious focus.

!!Shaymin
A Pokémon who appeared in what would become La Ciudad Dorada over 700 years ago in response to the people of the land showing gratitude for what they had. It has since taken up residence in Lingote Palace as the Pokémon that lives with and guides the royal family.
----
* GreenThumb: Like all Shaymin, it can make flowers grow even from seemingly dead land. It did this when the Wanderer summoned it, creating the lush oasis La Ciudad Dorada is known as.
* HiddenDepths: At first, Shaymin seems like nothing more than a cute sidekick with a bit of an attitude, much like the Shaymin seen in Anime/PokemonGiratinaAndTheSkyWarrior. This couldn't be further from the truth, as it quickly grows troubled by the events unfolding around it. [[spoiler:As it turns out, the entire conspiracy unraveling to threaten La Ciudad Dorada's survival is indirectly Shaymin's fault. It helped Fernando IV lie to the people of his time about the reason for the civil war, which created a negative impression of twins being born to the royal family - the direct reason for Fernando's LossOfIdentity in the present day.]] In the end, Shaymin learns its lesson and decides to face the future with a newfound sense of hope alongside Rosalita.
* VerbalTic: Depending on which form it is currently in, Shaymin ends many of its sentences with either "yes?" (Land Forme) or "you!" (Sky Forme.)

!!Noel and Leon
A sister and brother from Orre who turned to a life of crime and became Pokémon Hunters in order to survive. They have appeared in La Ciudad Dorada with an army of powerful, artificially controlled Pokémon hoping to capture Shaymin and find the Golden City.
----
* BreakoutCharacter: Their humorous personalities and close sibling bond proved to make them quite popular with readers.
* HeelFaceTurn: After Matt is burned by Heatran, they find themselves unable to continue on their path of collaborating with Fernando and cut a deal to join Rosalita's side.
* HiddenDepths: Noel and Leon initially appear to be cartoony villains looking to get rich quick, but in reality, they are desperate street orphans who only turned to crime as a way to support themselves and wish for nothing more than to escape to a better life together.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: They don't care about Fernando's goals at all. Their support of him is solely for the tremendous payment promised them, openly consider betraying him if they can make more money doing so, and finally '''do''' turn on him when Rosalita makes a better offer (albeit with a healthy share of intimidation.)
* SiblingTeam: They've relied on each other to survive since childhood, and led their gang in Orre in this way, too.

!!Captain Edrei
The captain of Lingote Palace's royal guard. His partner is a Pidgeot he can Mega Evolve using a Key Stone in his armor.
----
* BodyguardCrush: He has carried one for Rosalita since their childhood, although it is strongly implied she doesn't know about it.

!!Regigigas
A legendary Pokémon that serves as the guardian of La Ciudad Dorada. It watches over the kingdom from an unknown location, waiting to protect it from both external and internal threats.
----
* GemstoneAssault: Regigigas possesses Steel, Ice and Rock-type moves on top of its signature Crush Grip, signifying its mastery over the elements it used to create Registeel, Regice and Regirock. While Iron Head and Icy Wind are indeed moves the Regigigas species can learn in the games, its Rock-type move is Diamond Storm, which is normally Diancie's signature move.
* VoiceOfTheLegion: Unlike its three creations, Regigigas does not speak in a voice of its own, instead using the same PokemonSpeak as the Regigigas featured in Anime/PokemonHoopaAndTheClashOfAges. When Rosalita meets it up close, however, it reveals the ability to speak in all of the voices of past rulers of La Ciudad Dorada at once.

!!The Wanderer
A mysterious caped figure who helped show the ancient people 700 years ago what they should feel gratitude for, and summoned Shaymin by planting a Gracidea flower. He is said to be a Tenganist warrior priest from the Ransei region accompanied by a Lucario and Golisopod.
----
* DemotedToExtra: In the original version, he was known as the "Azure Angel" and played an active role in the events of the story. This time, his name and much of his story is stripped away, with no sign that he will appear in anything other than flashbacks. He is still the same character, however; Shaymin's flashback to him bidding it farewell contains a ContinuityNod that references his background as an immortal warrior searching for a missing person.
* TheCameo: He appears in the epilogue of the story, in a scene that confirms his reputation is true and he is indeed immortal.
