!All spoilers regarding the Prequel Trilogy, the Original Trilogy, ''Legends'', ''The Clone Wars'', and ''Rebels'' (with the exception of the Season 2 finale) are unmarked. Examples relating to Disney's EU, the new movies, and new content released from ''Rebels'' can be spoiler-tagged if deemed necessary.
----
Original characters (and canon characters with significant differences) appearing in ''On the Edge of the Devil's Backbone''. Out of virtue of being a ''Franchise/StarWars'' fic with plenty of thought put into it, expect numerous characters.

For canon examples, go to '''[[Characters/StarWars here]]'''.

%%Canon characters that appear in the fic but are not listed likely have the same tropes as canon.

!Free Ryloth
[[folder:In General]]
!!Ryloth
----
* AdaptationalBadass: At the time this AU was conceptualized, the Free Ryloth Movement and Ryloth in general had yet to appear in ''Rebels''. In the show, Ryloth is mostly treated as another planet backdrop and just being another rebel cell, while [=Backbone!Ryloth=] has much more going on, including having a political system of its own, the Curia, based off of the Roman Curia ([[WriteWhatYouKnow as the author is well educated on Roman history]]), as well as a pretty heavy focus on the Syndulla clan's familial ties and the other clans to some extent too.
* BadassFamily: The Syndulla clan makes up a huge part of the cast as part of Free Ryloth, and not without reason.
* SuccessionCrisis: There's one going on with the Syndulla clan, in part because of Hera's abduction.
** If Cham dies, then as his ''cum manu'' first wife, Alecto would legally become the clan head. It's a good thing she was already born a Syndulla and is not a second wife of Cham, because the problem already is that she's been neglecting her roles as matriarch (having held them off to her sister-in-law [[TheLancer Clotho]], who is now dead). While most of the Syndulla clan would have no problem accepting her, there's no telling how the other clans will feel.
** Xiaan is in a direct line of succession (as Cham's niece via Seku) and was born a curiate Syndulla. While the fact she used to be an Imperial slave has no legal bearing on the inheritance, it looks bad for her in the political environment (though generally, it will be argued that she was a child slave, so it still doesn't matter anyway). The problem is that she isn't interested in taking up the position, nor is she capable (especially because AChildShallLeadThem doesn't work well in Ryloth culture) nor has enough public support outside of the ''Forlorn Hope''.
** Doriah is only a curiate Syndulla because he was adopted as so and he is not immediately related to Cham (he is Alecto's nephew and is also illegitimate). He ''can'' become the heir after everyone else in the line of succession unless Cham repudiates them, which is easy to do as everyone has been gone for the past decade, the political environment is in a state where it'd be a valid choice, and everyone in the fleet is expecting him to do it anyway. But as said before, because Doriah got adopted into becoming a curiate and was born a pleb, the members who are more concerned about class will take issue with Doriah succeeding. There's also the fact that he was an Imperial slave at an old enough age, which can be used against him more than it can be used against Xiaan. At least Doriah is well-known throughout the Syndullas in the fleet and they're all okay with him succeeding... though the non-Syndullas have no idea who he is (even ''Secchun'' doesn't seem to know who he is).
** Ojeda has been gone so long [[spoiler:and is an Imperial prostitute as well as believed to be a part of LesCollaborateurs (which the fleet ''strongly'' stands against, even if she's unwilling,]] means that she wouldn't have enough backing if she became Cham's successor.
** The direct option, Hera, obviously can't work because not only is she dedicated to the Empire, but also ''in love'' with a [[FantasticRacism human]] [[spoiler:(former)]] Inquisitor that everyone will surely hang the moment they see him, and she has no interest in returning to her family.

[[folder:Cham Syndulla]]
!!Cham Syndulla
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cham_syndulla_homecoming.png]]

Father of Hera and husband to Alecto. Leader of the Free Ryloth fleet and head of the Syndulla clan, as one of the curiates in the Synedrion.
----
* AdaptationalBadass: [=Backbone!Cham=] being more open to the rest of the Galaxy seems to have been a part of why the Free Ryloth Movement has more results than their canon versions.
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: His parents and older sister died before his grandparents did (of which his grandmother died before the Clone Wars though after Hera's birth), so he inherited the position of being paterfamilias of the Syndulla clan and family.
* PapaWolf: Ask Agent Beneke. [[spoiler:Or more accurately, what's left of him after he taunted Cham about Hera]].
* PragmaticAdaptation: Due to not appearing until Season 2's "Homecoming". Considering how canon!Cham feels about anything that's not for Ryloth's wellbeing for the short run, it's debatable if he would've liked the idea of his family living offworld for the duration of the fighting.
** Free Ryloth also does not seem to have a fleet in canon.
* RebelLeader: Of Ryloth.
* TheRival: To Secchun.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: A high-ranking Curiate and a RebelLeader. It actually gets him in trouble a couple times when the two conflict.

!!!'''Callsign:''' Fury Leader
-->''"Do you think that just by saying my name over and over again I'll be any more likely to listen to you?"''

Mother of Hera and wife to Cham. Comes from a minor branch of the Syndulla family, also being the second of three daughters. She was captured in the raid on Zardossa Stix and held as a political prisoner. She conspired with her sister-in-law Seku to escape, and succeeded in making her way back to the fleet. She serves aboard the ''Forlorn Hope'' as the leader of the starfighter squadron, Fury Squadron.
----
* AdaptationalBadass: Hera's canon mother was not a fighter. Alecto, however, most definitely is.
* AllThereInTheManual: Her background as a podracer and how she met Cham.
* AscendedExtra: The author also liked to think that the turquoise-skinned Twi'lek accompanying Cham in "Supply Lines" was Alecto.
* [[GreenSkinnedSpaceBabe Teal Skinned Space Babe]]: Has the same color of skin as Numa.
* ComicBookFantasyCasting: Her design is based on Creator/IndiraVarma.
* CompositeCharacter: The author seems to consider Alecto and Hera's canon mother as the same individual for now.
* FamilyThemeNaming: Her sisters and her daughter are named after [[ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming Greek mythological figures.]]
* HotBlooded: Punched a Curiate woman in the face at a public affair, and her reaction to seeing her daughter as an ISB agent is to throw a chair across the room.
* MamaBear: Oh, yes. She is deadset on recovering Hera and taking vengeance on those that brainwashed her.
* MeaningfulName: In Myth/ClassicalMythology, Alecto is one of the Furies, as well as meaning 'the implacable anger'. And of course, her starfighter squadron is called Fury Squadron.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Trying to get Hera back once she's discovered to still be alive earlier on in the story instead turns her further ''away'' from her family, not towards, thanks to Alecto's attitude.
* OriginalCharacter / PragmaticAdaptation: Because we know next to nothing about her in canon, leaving tons of things for creative freedom. All we know about her canon personality is that she was idealistic (or at least a dreamer) like Hera. Here, [[HotBlooded well]], you know where Hera got her assertiveness from. Though WordOfGod seems to just treat Alecto and Hera's canon mother as [[CompositeCharacter the same entity]].
* ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming: Her FamilyThemeNaming.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: The fic was written long before Hera's mother was revealed to have died in canon.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Secchun Fenn]]
!!Secchun Fenn
A [[FantasticCasteSystem class-conscious]], traditionalist, vicious politician determined to survive against all odds. She's been embarrassed in an extremely public engagement, ascend to the head of her clan due to most if not all of her clan getting wiped out (she's about the seventh child of a second/third wife), had to deal with Cham's idealism in the Curia and the problems that arose after, and lost most of her family, political position, reputation, and everything she owns. Out of options, she joined the Free Ryloth fleet. She is a curiate and is the youngest daughter of the Fenn family.
----
* AmicableExes: Well, it's as amicable as it can get being political rivals that have to do an EnemyMine to survive out here. The Syndullas didn't want to be associated with the Fenns after the BroadStrokes incident, so they broke off the engagement.
* BigScrewedUpFamily: Her brother ''might'' be Ro Fenn, who was an AbusiveParent. WordOfGod states that he's still a {{Jerkass}}, but hasn't clarified the extent of that.
* BroadStrokes: WordOfGod is that something similar to what was going on with the Fenns in ''Republic'' happened here.
* {{Foil}}: To Cham. She's more vicious while Cham is more of a ReasonableAuthorityFigure, both of their children have been taken by the Nemesis program, and the Fenns have the rare pure white skin while the Syndullas have come in more different colors of skin than any other clan seen so far as well as having smooth-flowing markings on their lekku while the Fenns are stated to have geometric designs instead.
* MeaningfulName:
** "Secchun" is derived from an inscription in Roman North Africa. Her son, Thamir, has the same case.
** In Twi'lek, "Fenn" means hard-working.
* OriginalCharacter
* ShoutOut: Her clan, Fenn clan, is originally from Legends, featured in ''[[ComicBook/StarWarsRepublic Republic]]''.
* SillyRabbitIdealismIsForKids: Really doesn't like how idealistic Cham's ideas are. [[JerkassHasAPoint After all]], they ''did'' end up causing major repercussions against Ryloth.
* TheRival: To Cham. Joining the Free Ryloth Movement was a last resort and she hates that, but it's all she has left.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Doriah Syndulla]]
!!Doriah Syndulla
One of Hera's maternal cousins, brother to Lika, son to Clotho.
----
* AscendedExtra: The author didn't realize that she would end up writing Doriah and the other Syndulla cousins in larger roles.
* CallingTheOldManOut: [[spoiler:Is furious at Cham for not telling the rest of the family that Hera is an ISB agent.]]
* DisappearedDad: His mother slept around a lot, so he and Lika have different fathers. It probably isn't Cham, and apparently, his father was known in the Clone Wars and died during that time.
* MadeASlave: He and Xiaan were sold to a wealthy Imperial Baron, and escaped several years later.
* OriginalCharacter
* RapeAsBackstory: [[spoiler: While a slave, he was regularly sexually abused by his owner.]]
* SelfHarm: Has scarring on his forehead and arm from doing this shortly after escaping slavery.
* UncannyFamilyResemblance: Looks so much like his cousin Hera that they could easily pass for siblings.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Xiaan Syndulla]]
!!Xiaan Syndulla
The daughter of Seku (and thus Cham's niece), and Nury's younger sister.
----
* BrokenBird: She was extremely traumatized by her time as an Imperial slave.
* EarlyBirdCameo: The author likes to think that the girl Cham is holding in [[http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/8/81/Cham_Syndulla_ballad.png/revision/latest?cb=20090616135646 "The Ballad of Cham Syndulla"]] is her.
* HeroicBSOD: Anyone making any kind of romantic advance towards her causes her to completely shut down.
* MadeASlave: She and Doriah were sold to a wealthy Imperial Baron, and escaped several years later.
%%* MeaningfulName: In Twi'lek, "Xiaan" means spider.
* OriginalCharacter
* ShoutOut: Xiaan is also the name of a Twi'lek from ''Legends'' series ''ComicBook/{{Republic}}'' named Xiaan Amersu, who was a Jedi Knight.
* TeenGenius: Is a math prodigy.

* PragmaticAdaptation: [[IKnewIt Incidentally]], she's also in the Free Ryloth Movement in canon. Though her role is largely relegated to being DemotedToExtra because at the time she was introduced to the story, she wasn't in the show yet.

Alecto and Dione's older sister, mother of Doriah and Lika. She fought alongside her sisters during the Liberation of Ryloth, and took Doriah and Alecto back with her to continue to fight on Ryloth against the Imperial occupation, leaving Lika behind in the care of the extended family.
----
* ActionGirl: According to WordOfGod, she was more of a soldier than Alecto or Cham's sisters were. She discovered this during the Separatist occupation of Ryloth.
* TheGhost: Is only mentioned during the opening flashback as being on Ryloth and dies before the present day.
* KilledOffscreen: Dies offscreen sometime after Doriah and Xiaan reunite with the fleet.
* TheLancer: After the previous lancer, Isval, died, she became this to Cham for the next few years. She also ended up taking up the job as the Syndulla matriarch, as Alecto didn't want to deal with the job.
* LoveableRogue: WordOfGod is that she used to hang around with a bad crowd and was a troublemaker. Also, she slept around, which means Doriah and Lika have different dads ([[DisappearedDad and she never revealed who they were]]).
* MeaningfulName: [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clotho Clotho]] was one of the Three Fates, specifically the one that made major decisions in one's life, such as when and who was born, as well as who gets saved and who dies. What this means for the future is uncertain.
* MyGreatestFailure: Despite managing to reunite with her son, she kept unintentionally pushing feelings about the late Lika onto Xiaan, who is now her daughter-in-law, likely unable to get over feelings of Xiaan being a ReplacementGoldfish for her own daughter. [[DespairEventHorizon Clotho died less than a year later after reuniting with her son.]]
* OriginalCharacter
* PosthumousCharacter: Most of what we hear about her is through WordOfGod. The circumstances of her death are unknown other than she died in combat less than a year after Doriah and Xiaan were rescued.
* UrbanLegendLoveLife: While it is true that she did sleep around with a lot of men, rumors went around that Cham was Doriah's baby daddy, which is why [[GenerationXerox Doriah looks like Cham as much as Hera does]]. Considering Cham's personality, this is probably not the case.

----
* HeroicSacrifice: Jumps on her niece Hera to shield her from a grenade at the cost of her own life.
* JumpingOnAGrenade: Actually, she jumps on Hera rather than the grenade (though considering that Star Wars has stronger weapons than real life, it's probably better to shield yourself than to actually [[TooDumbToLive jump on a high tech grenade]].)
* MeaningfulName: In Twi'lek, "Alema" means [[HeroicSacrifice "protector"]].

* AllThereInTheManual: Would have been nine during the prologue and is nineteen by the events of the story. He became a slave that eventually got sold into Jabba's ownership on Tatooine. He's something like a pod-racer or a pit-fighter now, but still a slave.

Hera was taken prisoner in the raid on Zardossa Stix and identified as a candidate for the Nemesis program, which has the goal of turning the children of non-human enemies of the Empire into model Imperial officers. She ended up as one of its greatest successes, and was allowed to form her own unorthodox team for hunting rebels.
----
* BreakThemByTalking: Beneke feeds her propaganda and other things to turn her against her family, like telling her that [[spoiler:Alecto was supposedly in one of the nearby cells to her after they were recently abducted from Zardossa Stix and managed to escape, but even knowing that Hera was right there, she left without her (which was not what happened).]]
* DeadpanSnarker: A little more rougher than canon, but mostly the same.

* NotBrainwashed: Genuinely believes in the Imperial cause.
* PragmaticAdaptation: Canon material released post-Season 1 have since revealed that Hera was always on Ryloth until she, of course, left. Here, she and her family live offworld on Zardossa Stix while Cham and Free Ryloth fight back at home.
* UndyingLoyalty: Her defining trait, just like in canon. The fic plays with this characteristic that allows her to be TheHeart for the Rebellion in canon and sees how it would affect her if she placed it in TheEmpire insetad (the Empire that should be ''questioned'', the Empire of advantageous opportunists), and the story goes from there.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: She complies to orders to take Kanan to meet Darth Vader. Kanan is given a choice to either [[JoinOrDie join the Inquisition or die]], and he chooses the former for Hera's sake.

* PragmaticAdaptation: Much of the Inquisition in canon is unknown, so this was bound to happen.
** There are at least 66 members, with only four known Inquisitors in canon. Designation numbers are also based on the order of joining, starting with the Barriss, who is INQ-001, whereas canon is vague as to how it is listed.
** [[TheUnreveal The show never verifies why Mustafar is feared by Jedi, only implications of torture there]]. [[WildMassGuessing Some assumed that it was where Inquisitors were made]], but supporting material seems to suggest it's solely interrogation torture. Here, that idea gets taken and we get the Crucible.[[note]]''Film/RogueOne'' later revealed that it's home to Vader's Castle, meaning going there is a personal meeting with the Sith Lord himself from what is known so far.[[/note]]

Another Jedi turned Inquisitor, Barriss fell to the Dark Side in the Clone Wars, attacked the Jedi Temple in a desperate attempt to stop the war that ended with her framing her best friend Ahsoka Tano before being forced to confess and then imprisoned. Barriss was still in Republic custody at the time of Order 66, and thus made the perfect original candidate for what became the Imperial Inquisition.
----
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: [[AvertedTrope Thoroughly averted.]] Even though she's easily the Inquisitor most skilled with the Force and lightsaber combat, she's ranked no more highly than any of the others.
* BerserkButton: Any mention of Luminara Unduli inevitably causes her an internal FreakOut. [[spoiler:Brutally exploited by Agent Beneke as a parting shot in one of Hera's flashback scenes, which completely shuts Barriss down.]]
** Ahsoka accusing her of trying to kill her with the [[spoiler:sabotaged kyber crystal.]]
* DespairEventHorizon: Her life has been an unending series of these ever since the Clone Wars.
* DualWielding: Unlike the other Inquisitors, Barriss uses a pair of lightsabers instead of the standard ringed double-bladed type. It's actually the same pair she stole from Asajj Ventress back in her StartOfDarkness during the Clone Wars.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Disgusted by Agent Beneke and seriously creeped out by the way the Hunter treated Kanan.
* EvilFormerFriend: To Ahsoka.
* ExtremeDoormat: She's more or less unwilling to refuse any order that the Empire gives her, no matter how awful it is. She also has shades of this towards ''Ahsoka'' in that, despite all of Barriss' verbal and physical hostility towards her, she's willingly giving up classified information to her without getting much of anything in return. [[spoiler:Shows signs of starting to grow back out of this when she tries to get Ahsoka to destroy the kyber crystal shipment.]]
* {{Foil}}: To Ahsoka. They're both Jedi who realized the corruption of the Jedi Order and the Republic it served, but Ahsoka rejected the Dark Side and is one of the Empire's greatest opponents while Barriss fell to the Dark Side and was twisted into the Empire's servant. She's also one to Kanan, as they're both former Jedi serving the Empire but Kanan did it out of love for Hera while Barriss did it out of a genuine desire to make a difference. They were also broken in opposite ways: Barriss was systematically stripped of her identity as a Jedi to the point where she refers to Kanan as the only Jedi in the Inquisition, while Kanan was constantly confronted with his identity as a Jedi because he had spent the last decade running away from it.
* NiceToTheWaiter: Ironically enough. Even her FaceHeelTurn and the Crucible can't break those habits out of her.
* NothingIsScarier: Unlike with Kanan, the specifics of what the Empire did to Barriss to turn her into this are left unstated in the story.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: "The First Inquisitor", shortened to either "First" or "the Inquisitor". The only one who ever uses her real name anymore is Ahsoka.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: [[spoiler:She's so disturbed by the giant kyber crystal shipment that for the first time ever she directly sabotages her mission by giving the convoy route to Ahsoka and asking her to destroy it.]]
* PragmaticAdaptation: Canon WordOfGod post-Season 1 is that Barriss is not an Inquisitor, contrary to the popular theory that was followed here.
* ReforgedIntoAMinion: The Empire had all the time it needed to turn her from a fallen Jedi into their willing slave.
* SanitySlippage: Big time. Years of psychological torture will do that to you.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: [[spoiler:She promises Ahsoka that if she ever wants her dead, she'll kill her herself with her lightsabers.]]

* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Spiced bara nuts, back when she was a Jedi. Ahsoka orders her a bowl in a fit of pity.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: She still thinks she's doing things that have to be done for the greater good, although the fact that she's been willingly giving information to Ahsoka for years indicates that deep down she knows it's all a lie and refuses to admit it to herself.
* WeWillMeetAgain: A villainous example to [[spoiler:Kanan when he escapes the Crucible with the Ghost crew, because now they are targets of the Inquisition, as well as the Empire, due to committing treason]]. They'll all be coming now.

* MeaningfulName: To fit with the hunting name motif, hunters must be cunning and patient if they want to catch their prey.
* TheRival: Somewhat with the Hunter regarding who takes care of Kanan.
* TheVamp: Seems attracted to Kanan. It gets implied that if it the Hunter wasn't so 'protective' of him, she would've made him around something like her SexSlave.
* VillainTakesAnInterest: In Kanan, though unlike the Hunter, who is at least a little more vague about it, Patience definitely doesn't see him as an equal.

* BigGood
* LateArrivalSpoiler: The fic expects that you have finished Season 1, so yes, you should already know that Fulcrum is Ahsoka.
* PragmaticAdaptation: The canon Season 1 finale implied that most, if not all [[RebelLeader rebel cell leaders]] were unaware of Fulcrum's name and made most of their communication through holocalls. Here, Ahsoka personally meets with Cham and Alecto once Hera is revealed to be an ISB agent.
** The Empire also already knows that she's still running around doing errands for the Rebellion, whereas their suspicions are only confirmed early on in Season 2 and she never shows up in person to them until halfway through the Season. 968* AnOfferYouCantRefuse / JoinOrDie: Why the crew minus Hera (and sort of Ezra) became Imperials in the first place.
* [[spoiler:DefectorFromDecadence: Now that they've broken Kanan out of the Crucible, a complete violation of their orders, Barriss makes it clear to them before they flee that the Inquisition will be coming for him, and we can assume this means the Empire will be coming after them too. However, this does not mean they've had a HeelFaceTurn, as they're only doing it because they are TrueCompanions and they don't have much reason to quickly join the Rebellion yet, considering their issues.]]
* MirrorUniverse: So far, they're the only people that have a change of sides in the story. The only one that seems to genuinely support the Empire is Hera, with everyone else begrudgingly doing so because the alternative is getting executed or [[AFateWorseThanDeath worse]]. Plus, like in canon, it's better to be [[TrueCompanions together]] than alone. Their dynamic and personalities are just a tiny bit more abrasive than in canon, considering [[ManipulativeBastard the people]] around them and [[DarkAndTroubledPast their rougher pasts]], but they're otherwise the same characters we know, just in a different situation.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: A Twi'lek ISB Agent, an ex-Jedi-turned-Inquisitor, an old C1 astromech droid, a Mandalorian academy cadet washout, a former Lasat Honor Guardsman, and a Force-sensitive streetrat.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Hera. The only reason they are with the Empire at all is because of her. [[spoiler:When Hera wants to rescue Kanan, an act of high treason, they don't hesitate to join her]].

* TheEmpath: Exaggerated in one incident. See MySkullRunnethOver.
* MoralityChain: To the crew, maybe. He's the only one with an unaltered past, and he's pretty much only joining the crew because he has nowhere else to go. So far, he's had a rather positive effect on the others.
* MySkullRunnethOver: He accidentally senses ''every living being'' on Lothal at one point, and it's completely overwhelming.

----
* NoodleIncident: Apparently, she blew up part of the Imperial Academy on Mandalore as she ran away. She eventually crossed paths with Zeb.
* PragmaticAdaptation: Due to her backstory being planned before "Blood Sisters" and "The Protector of Concord Dawn", she has a very different one from canon, though it seems to have become [[CompositeCharacter composited with canon]] as of the airing of Season 3.
* ReassignedToAntarctica: An Academy cadet washout that ended up getting recruited in an unorthodox ISB team. A highly possible alternative is being executed by firing squad on Mandalore.
