Nature Cat is a cat who fancies himself a dashing, swashbuckling explorer who can’t wait to get outside for a day of backyard nature excursions! A passionate and curious feline, Nature Cat is a great friend who would do anything for his pals; he’s always ready to show them an amazing time out in nature.
----
* TenMinuteRetirement: Nature Cat pulls one off himself in "Goin' Batty". He makes several mistakes along the way (including getting bitten by mosquitoes and touching poison ivy), eventually coming to the conclusion that he isn't fit to be Nature Cat anymore and should just stick to being a house cat. He's ultimately convinced to go back to his old self when he rests a while and discovers he does have good instincts.
* AmbiguouslyGay: Let's see: He overdramatically fluctuates pitch, tone, and pronunciation when excited (i.e., a lot), is named Fred, plays the lute, and kisses Hal ''a lot''. That said, he does call Daisy a genius and kiss her in "The Return of Bad Dog Bart!", suggesting he's also AmbiguouslyBi.
* AnthropomorphicZigZag: He's a housecat named Fred by day, but he turns into a FunnyAnimal when his owners are gone.
* BigDamnKiss: Gives them to Hal. ''All the time''. It's honestly a miracle that MoralGuardians didn't try to get the show off air because of this.
* ButtMonkey: Can be this most of the time, either because of his habit of bumping into trees, his aquaphobic tendencies, or general clumsiness.
* CatsHateWater: This is one of Nature Cat's defining traits, and a recurring fear. He avoids water at all costs and panics whenever he gets splashed, though occasionally builds up enough strength to ride in boats. Is brought to a head in "Tide Pool Tough", where the entire plot is his determination to get over his fear of water in order to try surfing.
* CharacterCatchphrase:
** "Tally-ho!"
** "Onward and yonward!"
** "[[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes Water. Why did it have to be water?]]"
** "[[TemptingFate Nothing can stop us now!]]"
** Usually after that: "[[LampshadeHanging I gotta stop]] '''[[LampshadeHanging saying]]''' [[LampshadeHanging that!]]"
* ClarkKenting: When at home, Nature Cat is simply "Fred the house cat." However, this is only ever shown directly in the theme song; other than the TenMinuteRetirement in "Goin' Batty", it's never brought up in the show proper, even when the characters are out in the city or going shopping.
* CowardlyLion: It's quite easy to scare someone as cowardly as Nature Cat. It's best seen in some episodes such as "Swamp Thing".
* CuteKitten: [[https://orig00.deviantart.net/6a72/f/2016/123/d/a/nature_cat_as_a_kitten_by_rainbowdashfan2010-da17mel.jpg He was very cute]] as a kitten.
* DubNameChange:
** His name is Félibert in the French dub.
** In the Swedish dub, where he's a girl, his real name is Jill instead of Fred.
* {{Expy}}: He wears an outfit very similar to Myth/RobinHood, complete with the iconic red feather.
* FemaleFelineMaleMutt: Inverted. Nature Cat is a male feline to Nature Dog's female canine.
* FullyDressedCartoonAnimal: Nature Cat wears a shirt, hat, shoes, and pants, while his three friends are naked.
* FurryReminder: Nature Cat has quite a few moments of notice where he shifts back into a more feral mentality, particularly with his fur fluffing when he panics and, of course, water.
* TheHero: Of the whole series. Nature Cat loves nature and does anything he can to help it.
* IconicOutfit: Nature Cat wears an outfit that is very reminiscent to that of Myth/RobinHood's.
* ImMelting: PlayedForLaughs. In "Outdoor Nature Warrior", Nature Cat cartoonishly melts into a puddle after getting exhausted from the heat.
* JerkassBall: In "A Nature Carol", where his attempts to make his Christmas special upsets his friends and leads to him getting visits from four spirits who try to get him to see the errors of his ways. He's essentially the Ebenezer Scrooge of this special.
* LargeHam: Nature Cat is known to speak very melodramatically.
* TheLeader: Yup, you guessed it!
* NatureLover: Really? Who would have guessed?
* {{Planimal}}: In "Nature Plant", Nature Cat dreams that he becomes a potted plant.
* RuleOfSymbolism: According to WTTW, who produces the show, Nature Cat is supposed to represent the majority of the viewers. He’s eager and enthusiastic about outside exploration and activities, but he is also a little clueless and even intimidated by it.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: The Sensitive Guy to Ronald's Manly Man.
* ShesAManInJapan: He is a girl in the Swedish dub, and his real name is changed to Jill.
* {{Tsundere}}: Nature Cat, a Sweet example, who is usually cute, friendly, enthusiastic, and highly emotional. He is also implied to have a crush on his best friend Hal, to the point where he usually shows affection towards him. However, he is also prone to being annoyed and has a confrontational side whenever Ronald is around or whenever Hal says or does things that can really set him off.
* VocalEvolution: His voice sounded a bit deeper in the earlier episodes of the show.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Is very afraid of water.

[[folder: Daisy]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/daisy_the_bunny__transparent__by_grizzlybearfan_d9vutff.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KateMicucci

This is one wired-in rabbit! As a gadget lover, Daisy illustrates how technology can be helpful when out in nature -- recording bird calls to help identify a particular bird or using the compass app to show which direction to go. Daisy asks A LOT of questions, and often weighs the options of anything and everything.
----
* BookWorm: More like smartphoneworm; Daisy often consults her phone to read up more detailed information about the episode's topic and is usually the most knowledgeable one.
* BunniesForCuteness: A very cute bunny.
* CharacterCatchphrase: "Man, oh man!"
* OnlySaneMan: Daisy occasionally can be this.
* PhoneaholicTeenager: She's technically not a teenager, but she likes to use her smartphone ''a lot''.
* RighteousRabbit: She is very sweet and friendly.
* RuleOfSymbolism: WordOfGod says that she is supposed to represent the viewers who have a hard time “unplugging” from their technological devices, yet are still excited to join the nature adventures.
* TheSmartGirl: Easily the smartest character in the group.
%%* TeamMom
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The Girly Girl to Squeeks' Tomboy.
* WhiteBunny: She has white fur.
* YouthfulFreckles: Has what appears to be freckles above her mouth.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Hal]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hal_the_dog__transparent__by_grizzlybearfan_d9vut8c.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Bobby Moynihan

This slobbery, disheveled, rambunctious family dog plunges headlong through life -- running through puddles, digging up mud, and sniffing things that make Nature Cat shudder! He’s not the deepest thinker but is so optimistic he sees the good in everything.
----
* AmbiguouslyGay: He is ''very'' loyal to Nature Cat, gets kissed by him all the time, and Hal says "O captain, my captain" sometimes to NC.
* BigFriendlyDog: The tallest member of the gang, and while he is dimwitted, he is quite friendly.
%%* TheBigGuy
* BigNo: Says "NOOOOOOOO!" in "Moth-Frolic Fest".
* CharacterCatchphrase: "Hi X, it's me, Hal!" and "Me too too, also!"
* DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment: Hal, ''all the time''. It's even part of one of his catchphrases!
* TheDitz: Hal is the most dimwitted of the main characters.
* DogsAreDumb: Hal is a dog, and is very unintelligent.
* FailedASpotCheck: "Hal's Day Off" begins with Hal catching a toy and landing in the back of a truck, and completely failing to realize that he's riding in it at all even after he starts to move.
* TheHeart: The friendliest of the four.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: While him and NC are both way bigger than Squeeks and Daisy, it's especially noticeable whenever Hal (the biggest of the group) and Squeeks (the smallest of the group) are paired up.
* IveHeardOfThatWhatIsIt: He's prone to this.
* KindheartedSimpleton: He may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but is very friendly, optimistic, and loyal.
* TheLancer: To Nature Cat
* MadLibsCatchphrase: "Hi,___, it's me, Hal!"
* MotorMouth: He ''never'' shuts up.
* PhraseCatcher: "Hal, you're a genius!"
* ThePollyanna: Always stays optimistic no matter what.
* RuleOfSymbolism: WordOfGod says that Hal represents kids who may be more impulsive and like to run wild but forget to stop and enjoy the view.
%%* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan:
* SickEpisode: "Fall for Hal".
* UndyingLoyalty: He always sticks by Nature Cat no matter what. Justified since he is a dog.
* VerbalTic: He has a habit of adding "baby" to the end of sentences.

[[folder: Squeeks]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/squeeks_the_mouse__transparent__by_grizzlybearfan_d9vutbt.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KateMcKinnon

Squeeks is a daring, fearless nature explorer, moving through the world relying more on her instincts than her experience and knowledge. This mouse shows kids that no matter your size or age, you can always help out and make a difference.
----
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: She got a crush on Sir Galahad in ''Heartthrob Hamster'', but it only went one way.
* AmazingTechnicolorWildlife: Unlike the other characters, who have normal fur colors, Squeeks' fur is blue, though it may be intended to read as gray.
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: Partially the youngest.
* TheBigGirl: In a similar vein to Hal, she may be small, but she's the strongest of the pack.
* CharacterCatchphrase: "Count the mouse in!"
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: The Tiny Girl to Hal's Huge Guy.
* InterspeciesRomance: Admittedly between two rodents, but between Squeeks (a mouse) and Sir Galahad (a hamster) in "Heartthrob Hamster". It technically only goes one way though.
* LittleMissSnarker: Definitely the smallest of the group, and is quite the snarker. She pretty much rivals [[WesternAnimation/ReadyJetGo Mindy Melendez]] at this point.
* LoveMakesYouDumb: In "Heartthrob Hamster", Squeeks would say Sir Galahad didn't _____ as a Running Gag, only for Daisy to show her a counter-video that disproves her point, and shows that Squeeks' love of Sir Galahad is making her blind.
* MyNaymeIs: Squeeks, '''not''' Squeaks.
* NiceMice: Though she can be a snarker, she is otherwise sweet and friendly.
* OnlySaneWoman: Squeeks typically serves as the voice of reason.
* PluckyGirl: Squeeks is fearless and idealistic.
* RuleOfSymbolism: Like the other characters. According to WTTW, who produces the show:
-->"Squeeks is at home outside, as many kids still are, and she is a great model for how fun, interesting and cool the outdoor world can be and how to share that with other kids."
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The Tomboy To Daisy's GirlyGirl.
* VoiceChangeling: "The Petrified Wood Mystery" reveals that she can do a perfect imitation of the narrator's voice when reading off the script for "Daisy's Colossal Fossil".
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Ronald]]
[[quoteright:316:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ronald_the_cat.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' [[Series/KenanAndKel Kenan Thompson]] (series 1), Chris Knowings (series 2)
Ronald is Nature Cat’s next door neighbor and arch-enemy. He’s a bit of [[CatsAreLazy a lazy feline]], but is always up for some friendly competition, especially if it’s against Nature Cat. He likes to lounge in his hammock drinking lemonade or spend the afternoon at the groomers. He is also a DJ and spins at the neighborhood parties and events.
----
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Due to his competitive nature, he tries to invoke this on Nature Cat.
* AmazingTechnicolorWildlife: Most animals in the show are realistically-colored; Ronald is, well, purple.
* ArchEnemy: He's the main rival to Nature Cat and his friends.
* BigBad: Most of the time, he causes the conflict, and also serves as the gang's rival.
* CatsAreMean: Played straight. He's a cat and he is selfish and competitive.
* CompetitionFreak: Ronald is very competitive and always wants to beat Nature Cat at everything.
* {{Foil}}: To Nature Cat. Nature Cat has a slim body and is active and loves to explore nature, while Ronald has a stout body shape, is lazy, and usually doesn't care about exploring nature and can sometimes even be harming it, albeit unintentionally.
* FriendlyEnemy: Whenever he partners up with the rest of the gang.
* HarmlessVillain: For obvious reasons given the show's target demographic. He's more of a nuisance than a real villain, a bit of a selfish egotistical jerk.
* TheHeavy: He's the most active adversary in "The Return of Bad Dog Bart!", seeking to find Bad Dog Bart's treasure and claim all the cat and dog toys for himself. He's quickly upstaged by the much more threatening Bad Dog Bart once he finally makes his presence.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He may be NC's arch-enemy, but is still willing to help him out from time to time.
* RuleOfSymbolism: WordOfGod states that Ronald represents viewers who, for various reasons, are reluctant to go outside and interact with nature. But once they do, they see how much fun it is.
* {{Sidekick}}: Tried to be this to [[spoiler: Gwendolyn]] in ''The Return of Bad Dog Bart'', with failed results.
* SitcomArchNemesis: To Nature Cat.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Nature Dog]]
[[quoteright:169:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/naturedog.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/CobieSmulders
Nature Dog is the canine counterpart to Nature Cat. She debuts in the MadeForTVMovie ''Ocean Commotion''. She helps Nature Cat and his friends navigate the ocean.
* DistaffCounterpart: To Nature Cat.
* FemaleFelineMaleMutt: Inverted. Nature Dog is a female canine to Nature Cat's male feline.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Bad Dog Bart '''(unmarked spoilers)''']]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/ChrisParnell
The neighborhood bad dog, who loves to steal dog and cat toys from dogs and cats alike.
* BigBad: He's the main villain of the MadeForTVMovie "The Return of Bad Dog Bart!". In spite of this, he doesn't even show up until half-way through.
* EvilCounterpart: To Hal. Both are anthropomorphic dogs to love to collect toys; however, whereas Hal is friendly, willing to share his toys with others, and isn't very bright, Bad Dog Bart is a cruel {{Jerkass}} who steals toys before hiding them, and is quite clever, making maps to remember where he buried his toys.
* EvilIsBigger: He's much taller than everyone else. And fittingly enough, he's a much more dangerous threat than [[BigBad Ronald]].
* GreaterScopeVillain: The closest thing the show has to one. "The Return of Bad Dog Bart!" reveals that he stole cat toys from Nature Cat and his sister Gwendolyn, causing her to run off to find their stolen toys, leaving Nature Cat alone for many years.
* SpikesOfVillainy: He wears spiky bracelets on each wrist and is a very cruel dog.
* TopHeavyGuy: He has quite the muscular upper body, but has pretty small legs to make up for it.
[[/folder]]
