A unique Quirk that's been passed on for generations. It was created around the time Quirks first surfaced when [[BigBad All For One]] decided to forcefully implant a power stockpiling Quirk to his [[{{Unsorcerer}} Quirkless]] younger brother. However, it turned out he did possess a Quirk; a seemingly useless Quirk that allowed him to pass his Quirks onto others. The two Quirks fused together to create "One For All", a Quirk that grows stronger as it gets passed down. One For All has been held by nine different people, the most recent of which is the story's protagonist: Izuku Midoriya.
----
* AllYourPowersCombined: One For All is the permanent combination of two Quirks. One is a transfer Quirk that can only be transferred to others while the other Quirk can stockpile power. Throughout its history, One For All has been secretly storing the Quirks of previous users in a dormant form, incubating them. It is only during the ninth generation when One For All starts awakening and augmenting the other Quirks within Izuku Midoriya.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: One For All's SuperEmpowering trait eventually makes it this to its twin, All For One. Said Quirk can steal any power for the user's own ends. Having gained a life-extending Quirk, All For One has amassed a large collection of powers by the modern day, but as training each individual one would be an exhaustive effort, he has never refined any beyond their 'base' state. One For All instead passively boosts both the base strength of the user and ''all'' its combined powers over the years, so even weak Quirks like those of the prior users become formidable by the present. It's implied that a great deal of All For One's obsession with One For All is his awareness of this.
* TheAssimilator: One For All assimilates the Quirks of each of its users into itself when it's passed on. By the present, it includes six different Quirks.
* AssimilationPlot: All For One's goal throughout the generations has been to find a way to reclaim his long-lost brother after he was "stolen" (read:liberated) from his grasp, and after his physical death, this desire shifted into a mania with absorbing his remnant Quirk to "reclaim" Yoichi. Accordingly, a significant chunk of the manga's plot is his efforts in preparing Tomura to succeed where he cannot and merge his Quirk with his Twin's within Tomura's body. The fact that Tomura has been [[IdenticalStranger groomed in Yoichi's image]] and All For One sees [[FusionDance the resulting being]] as the "Perfected Demon Lord" has all sorts of [[{{Yandere}} disturbing implications]].
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: By the climax of Izuku's fight with Tomura, the vestiges come to the conclusion that the only potential means of damaging [[InvincibleVillain him]] is to intentionally complete the AssimilationPlot All For One groomed him to achieve and "[[DeathOrGloryAttack give]]" Tomura One For All. Kudo points out that by exploiting the "forcible transference" aspect of Yoichi's Quirk (using the analogy of Bakugo passing Izuku some test papers by throwing them in his face) and the fact that the sub-powers of the other Quirk Factor can be separated from the main one, Izuku can use the vestiges like weapons, targeting Tomura's leftover psychic damage within the MentalWorld of the Vestige Realm and [[AssimilationBackfire weakening him from within]].
* BequeathedPower: The fundamental nature of the quirk at the foundation of One For All is the ability to being passed on. It's a torch that cannot be taken but only willingly given to an inheritor and as times goes by, it stockpiles power and quirks to become stronger with each new generation.
* BlessedWithSuck: It has been discussed that a Quirkless person is a much more suitable bearer of One For All than someone who has a Quirk of their own because, metaphorically speaking, they are an "empty cup" that can be filled without spilling over. Those born with a Quirk, the "full cup" that spills over, however, are more likely to die young due to One For All infusing them with multiple Quirks and overtaxing their bodies.
* CastFromLifespan: The super-enhanced Quirk causes anyone born with a Quirk who inherits it [[RapidAging to age rapidly]]-- though apparently, [[OlderThanTheyLook without showing any physical signs]] until their time runs out. Yoichi Shigaraki, or rather his vestige within One For All, used the analogy of a full wine glass overflowing vs an empty one slowly filling up to demonstrate that people born with a Quirk cannot manage [[DeadlyUpgrade this power surge]] for more than 2 decades before it finally takes its toll. All Might and Deku are immune to this deadly drawback, as both were [[CursedWithAwesome born Quirkless]]. However, the problem with finding a tenth user is that the world's Quirkless population is declining rapidly (only about 20% of the population at the series start) and even if Midoriya could find one to pass it onto, it may be too risky to attempt, as they may not withstand the power One For All has accumulated across ''nine generations''.
* CombatAndSupport: As En outlines, none of the 6 additional Quirks contained within One For All were finishing moves in their own right, but acted as support options for their wielders using the main stockpiled power in fighting against All For One. By Izuku's time, having access to all of them enables him to use them as enhancements to his main striking ability with One For All, and them being likewise enhanced by their incubation within the Quirk means the support options Izuku can unleash are much more varied than their original wielders. They can even be broken down into further individual categories for supporting Izuku in combat (Gearshift and Fa Jin), traversal (Black Whip and Float) and environmental support (Smokescreen and Danger Sense).
* DeadlyUpgrade: Any wielder of One For All born with a Quirk of their own will have both overwhelming power... and a dramatically shortened lifespan. This is because the extra Quirk strains their bodies too much. What makes it more dangerous is, the person in question doesn't even realize what the super-Quirk is [[RapidAging doing to their body]], until it's too late. This was the case for some of the previous users and they only learned about it through their vestiges left behind in One For All.
* DifficultButAwesome: Because One For All gets more powerful with each generation it's passed onto, its power has grown to the point where it's dangerous for anyone inexperienced to use it in anything but the smallest fractions of its capability. It takes extensive training and gradual but persistent usage to be able to handle One For All to its fullest potential. However, once you do get the hang of it, it's the most ridiculously overpowered Quirk in the series. Especially when you take into account that it is now strong enough to manifest the Quirks held by the previous users. That said, if the user is not prepared to handle their new powers, the same problem arises as these Quirks are all super-charged far above what they were capable of before.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: The fact that One For All has been stockpiling the Quirks of the previous wielders is foreshadowed in its ''own origin story''. One For All was created when All For One forcibly gave his younger brother Yoichi a stockpiling Quirk, which merged with Yoichi's own, hidden Quirk. It's not clear which Quirk had the properties that allowed the merge, but it stands to reason that if whatever Quirk was responsible could merge with another Quirk once, then there's no reason to believe it couldn't merge with another Quirk again given the opportunity. The only reason it took so long for this ability to show up is because the Quirk needed to stockpile enough power to allow the current user access to the stockpiled Quirks.
* GoodCounterpart: One For All and its wielders, serve as this to All For One and his titular Quirk (especially now that, with it being passed to Midoriya, it's powerful enough to utilize all the Quirks of every previous user).
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower:
** By the time of the story, One For All has combined eight Quirks with strength ranging from "unimpressive" to "practically useless" and amplified all of them into forces to be reckoned with. The first two Quirks that created One For All to begin with were the mediocre ability to stockpile strength and the all-but-worthless "power" to pass itself on. Those two proved to be the exact combination necessary to ensure that One For All could eventually gain enough power to oppose All For One no matter how powerful he became and be preserved for the generations it would take to gather that much strength.
** It also turns out that heart is ''literally'' the reason why their awesome power was able to oppose AFO in the first place. Hawks theories that, despite the long-standing animosity between him and the Users, AFO was never able to steal OFA himself because [[TheSociopath he lacked strong enough emotional willpower]] to overcome OFA's inherent resistance to his PowerParasite abilities. To this end, he goes as far as grooming Tomura into his successor and heir, motivating him to steal the quirk on his behalf, in essence leaving it to somebody else with a sufficiently powerful 'heart' of hatred to overcome their combined willpower when he himself is [[TheHeartless incapable]] of doing so.
** The SuperEmpowering trait is eventually revealed to be this, as it theoretically allows one to passively expand and enhance the powers of all associated quirks stored within it without limitation beyond the user's body being unable to withstand such immense power and breaking down from it. All For One has spent decades of effort, experimentation and resources into refining the science necessary to physically enhance the body enough to withstand such god-like power, precisely to he can eventually one day steal One For All and combine this trait with his collection of quirks in a body capable of withstanding the side-effects in order to become an all-powerful demon lord.
** The climax of the fight against Tomura has Kudo utilising Yoichi's "forcible transference" Quirk (pretty much the ''least'' combat-capable power within their combined abilities) as the main weapon by which to target Tomura's psyche within the vestige realm, his successful attack with his own vestige proving more effective in damaging Tomura than any other tactic the heroes used prior.
* HomeBase: The Quirk hosts a dark dimension within itself wherein Midoriya can meet the previous users of One For All. So far, he has yet to learn how to willingly enter the dimension, and he is unable to speak within it. All For One and Tomura briefly enter it in an attempt to steal One For All, but are repelled by Yoichi and Nana. The next time Izuku visits it, he finds himself in an incomplete room floating in the darkness, with all the predecessors sitting on tall back chairs. Chapter 310 reveals that this room is based on the vault that All For One imprisoned Yoichi in, his rescue from within it by the second and third wielders being the symbolic birth/starting line of One For All.
* LightIsGood: One For All has a subtle light motif, as characters light up when using it, they are usually represented by lights and whenever it is given a visual portrayal, it's either a light or a fire. This later doubles with DarkIsNotEvil, as the flashbacks are all caused by it, but are covered in darkness.
* LinearWarriorsQuadraticWizards: The Quirk seems to have this going with All For One. All For One initially dwarfed One For All in power, to the point early users were well aware they didn't stand a chance. However, while All For One is able to increase in power by stealing other Quirks any time and One For All can only do it by transfer, All For One merely adds those powers on top of each other while One For All increases in power exponentially even if its user didn't ''have'' a Quirk and by the time those other powers actually start ''manifesting'', they've received the same exponential upgrade as the main power. As a result, while All For One had hundreds of Quirks and All Might only had the basic built-up physical strength from eight users, All Might was powerful enough to mutually cripple All For One. This is especially true given All For One's habit of focusing on powerful, straightforward quirks.
* LogicalWeakness:
** OFA is able to be passed onto another person following the holder's willpower, even if the intended target were to refuse accepting OFA themselves. This nature also allows OFA to resist AFO's absorption because it's nature as ManySpiritsInsideOfOne gives it the combined emotional willpower to refuse AFO's ability to non-consensually steal it. However, this is dependant on the willpower of the current holder being stronger than the intended thief's. [[TheSociopath All For One]] himself cannot summon up a strong enough emotional willpower to steal OFA, despite the generations-long feud with the holders, but [[ThePowerOfHate Tomura]] is able to start eroding OFA's resistance when he's pulled into a mental tug-of-war between himself and Izuku. Accordingly, AFO's plans following the failure of his first attempt is to let Tomura rest and recuperate to be better prepared for round 2, whilst forcing Izuku into situations that will [[BreakTheBadass demoralize him]] and render OFA more vulnerable to his next attempt to steal it.
** Each of OFA's individuals Quirks have their own drawbacks.
*** Blackwhip sends out a form of physical energy, which means someone can intercept it.
*** Fa Jin requires repeated movement to store energy, so the user has to determine how much to move, where to store it, and how to unleash it.
*** Danger Sense triggers when the intent to harm is sensed from a target, so can be exploited if the target works around this, preventing the user from anticipating attacks.
*** Smokescreen can also blind the user if used too much.
*** Float can keep a user in the air but may require a way to use propulsion and/or momentum in order to move around.
*** Gearshift can, by the time Izuku unlocks it, be used to ''vastly'' increase the user's movement speed and reaction time, but causes oxygen deprivation induced cellular damage, with the blowback stacking the more it's used.
** The climax of the fight against Tomura has Kudo deciding in an all-or-nothing gamble to finally stop him: using Yoichi's "transference" Quirk to "shoot" the vestiges within Izuku into Tomura's psyche to damage him from within. Not only does this weaken Izuku every time it's used, depriving him of another power he's using to just barely stay in the fight, it's noted that doing so could potentially ''empower'' Tomura with the Quirk factor if the transfer doesn't destroy them. Kudo therefore offers to be the first test subject, due to Gearshift's recoil blowback having stacked fourfold by that point, noting that too should transfer and handicap Tomura from using it against Izuku immediately.
* MagikarpPower: One for All originated as the merger of Yoichi's totally useless quirk of bestowing a quirk and a power stockpiling quirk given to him by his brother. With Yoichi alone, One for All was very weak. However, after eight generations of extensive cultivation, it has stockpiled monstrous amounts of strength and evolved into one of the most powerful Quirks in existence. Around the time of the ninth generation (Izuku Midoriya), the Quirk fully manifested the paranormal ability to interact with the "ghosts" of previous wielders. Additionally, One For All absorbs the Quirks of ''all'' its wielders and stores them within its core. When Midoriya became the ninth user, One For All accumulated enough energy to cause the dormant Quirks to manifest within him.
** Goes even further with the Quirks contained within One For All. Since All For One either killed or crippled anyone with a Quirk powerful enough to threaten him, the Quirks of the previous One For All users weren't very powerful when they were alive. But since then, over ''eight generations'', all of their Quirks have been empowered by One For All's stockpiling, making them significantly stronger than they were in the past.
* ManySpiritsInsideOfOne: One For All carries on a vestige of the former users, carrying on their spirit, including memories. The users experience vague images of them, characterized by a burst of power. Midoriya, however, seems to be the first one to be able to clearly access this element of One For All and even interact with the previous users. [[OhCrap He quickly realizes the vestiges are actually a lot more than vestiges]]. After All For One's botched attempt to steal One For All, the predecessors and Izuku are able to freely speak with one other. Daigoro jokes that the predecessors won't intrude on Izuku's privacy.
* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane: The very nature of the quirk is somewhat mythical and shrouded in mystery even as more is revealed about it as the series goes on. It houses the (maybe?) spirits of the deceased prior users but this is explained as being because Quirk factors record memories. Having been around so long, One For All is then able to give those spirits greater sentience to the point they can communicate with the current wielder. Or perhaps there's something more to it? The exact specifics are kept purposefully vague and may never be answered.
* MeaningfulName: "One For All" is a play on both the villain All For One's CodeName, representing it's the one power that can stand against his PowerParasite abilities, and also explains its own most basic ability: it's the one Quirk that can be passed on to anyone, even the Quirkless. The difference in the names also highlights a difference in philosophy - "All For One" highlights Shigaraki's (the villain All For One) lust for power and vain solipsism, while "One For All" is built upon compassion and heeding the voices of the helpless in need.
* MetaPower: Yoichi had as his original Quirk the ability to transfer said Quirk to other people. Since the Quirk itself did nothing otherwise, it was believed that the original holder was Quirkless. His quirk then merged with a SuperStrength Quirk given to him by All For One, turning into "One For All": that same super strength that can be passed down through generations, growing stronger each iteration, with the series protagonist Deku as its ninth holder. It's later revealed that One For All can also allow its user to use the Quirks of its previous users as well, if they happened to have one apart from One For All, though it comes at [[RapidAging a cost]].
* MindHive:
** The WhamEpisode that One For All is much more complicated than anyone thought came through the revelation that not only can All For One not use his Quirk on it, the previous users are still floating around in there somewhere. One For All itself hadn't reached a point where they could actually interact with the current torchbearer until Midoriya was given the ability:
--->'''Yoichi Shigaraki:''' We're far past the singularity now.
** All For One is also vaguely connected to the mind hive as he provided the stockpiling Quirk that led to One For All's creation.
** Tomura Shigaraki seems to be connected as well, since the All For One quirk has been given to him.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: Bakugo pointed out the similarities between One For All and All For One as both Quirks can hold multiple different Quirks. He wondered if All For One is involved in One For All's recent development, which is true. All Might is uncomfortable about this connection.
* OneHeroHoldTheWeaksauce: All Quirks have a LogicalWeakness to them, even All For One... except a fully mastered One For All. The drawback is actually having to learn to use it, but once they ''do'', it effectively has no exploitable weakness. A person who already had a Quirk ''does'' have a limited lifespan, but even then, a user without a pre-existing Quirk is able to bypass that problem entirely.
* OpenSecret: PlayedForDrama. The aftermath of the Paranormal Liberation War arc sees the existence of One For All exposed to the public. While the public is still unaware of precisely what kind of Quirk One For All is, All Might and Midoriya decide that, at the very least, they need to tell more people the truth. All Might explains the secret to the three top heroes (who later include other top heroes such as Mt. Lady, Kamui Woods, and Edgeshot), while Midoriya leaves behind letters with the truth for Class 1-A to read after he leaves UA. Later on, many grimly note that with so many now in on the secret, it may be only a matter of time before it's no longer a secret anymore.
* PowerGlows: One For All is represented often as a glowing light of various colors passed from user to user. When Midoriya uses it, it's represented as red glowing lines traveling through his body and green lighting sparking around him. When Midoriya briefly can use it at 100% with Eri's help, his hair and eyes glow. Izuku uses this against Tomura in the FinalBattle, exploiting that Search can also track the vestiges within him thanks to the PsychicLink allowing Tomura to "see" them, allowing him to deceive Tomura with a feint using a piece of his blood containing Kudo's vestige in the midst of a smokescreen.
* RefusalOfTheCall: As OFA is a super-quirk with ManySpiritsInsideOfOne features, an individual torchbearer can refuse to impart knowledge or their quirk on the current user, if their actions are not met with their approval.
* RemovedAchillesHeel: Due to the number of Quirks inside of it, some of them have removed the weaknesses of the other Quirks.
** [[SpiderSense Danger Sense]] removed Smokescreen's weakness of blinding its own user.
** Combining Blackwhip with Fa Jin can allow the user to more quickly build up power for Fa Jin with centripetal force, making it easier to use.
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: Played with. Some of the Quirks within OFA don't actually have these, but when used together in tandem with the ''other'' abilities within the ComboPlatterPowers the quirk bestows all at once, it enables the user to [[RemovedAchillesHeel counter the various weaknesses and drawbacks]] of the individual powers.
** Yoichi's "transference' Quirk is a double-case of this. Not only does it need another power to transfer in order to work, but it's revealed that Yoichi's Quirk Factor was left damaged and incomplete from his sibling's monopolisation of nutrients in the Womb, making it too weak to be a proper Quirk by itself. It needed another power to assimilate and become "complete" before Yoichi could use it himself.
** Smokescreen doesn't possess the ability to allow the user to see through the same smoke cover they create, running the risk of blinding themselves and letting the enemy get the drop on them if they use too much smoke at once. However, when used in tandem with [[SpiderSense Danger Sense]] the wielder can perceive incoming threats to them and react, but the original Quirk and its user didn't possess this advantage.
** Fa Jin requires multiple repeated movements to 'charge up' the energy needed to augment Izuku's attacks, leaving him somewhat vulnerable and unable to use the specified limb until he's ready. However, combining it with [[CombatTentacles Black Whip]] enables Izuku to charge the energy whilst keeping his arms and legs available mid-fight. Furthermore, Gearshift's speed boost enables Izuku to perform the specified movements with his limbs in an instant and even unleash rapid-fire Megaton Punches, all but eliminating Fa Jin's drawbacks whilst it's active.
** Gearshift's enhancements within One For All enable Izuku to become fast enough to break the sound barrier, and comes with the additional benefit of allowing him to negate his inertia when shifting to a lower gear, preventing his speed becoming ''too'' uncontrollable, but when moving at high speed, if Izuku is facing an opponent who can predict his movements, he's in danger of taking immense damage from his increased velocity, especially since his [[GlassCannon durability]] in a fight is an ever-present issue. However, Danger Sense enables him to know when he's about to be attacked, allowing him to preemptively slow down or speed up as required to avoid counterattacks.
* StrongerWithAge: Not only does the raw power it bestows cultivate with each user, but the Quirks of each user merges with it, eventually allowing a future generation to wield them as well.
* SuperEmpowering:
** What makes One For All unique is that it can be transferred at will, letting the current user empower another with its SuperStrength. All Might also states if they had a Quirk previously, that Quirk is ''also'' massively upgraded. And all the other Quirks wielded by previous users, although only Midoriya managed to awaken them.
** It's greatly implied that All For One desires this trait the most about One For All, alongside the satisfaction that would come from subduing his brother's will at last to claim it as his own. Combining its passive buffing ability with his own multitude of quirks, which would otherwise require exhaustive amounts of effort to train and enhance one by one to bring out their full potential, would allow him to reach unimaginable level of power over his extended lifespan, effectively making him a god in name and deed.
* TransferableMemory: The metaphysical realm of One For All is not an afterlife - the actual wielders themselves are long dead. The Vestiges are something between a copy and a memory, each more of an interactive user interface for ''these'' rather than a stored soul.
* WhenItAllBegan: All Might narrates One For All's origin story to Midoriya and the purpose of that Quirk. Several chapters later, Midoriya himself gets to see One For All's creation within the memories of [[BigBad All For One]] and his [[GreaterScopeParagon brother]]. Symbolically, the Homebase that eventually manifests within One For All after Izuku starts being able to draw upon its power in greater amounts is a recreation of the Vault where Yoichi Shigaraki was sealed in by his brother during his refusal to join him and All For One's subsequent attempts to coerce him to submit, with his rescue from it by the second and third wielders being the metaphorical 'Starting line' of One For All.
* WrongContextMagic: No Quirk in the world, except its "sibling" All For One, behaves like One For All. It can be passed down and each user strengthens the Quirk as they use it. To further this, it also retains the quirks that others used in tandem with this one, allowing Midoriya to eventually have access to all of their quirks without losing his mind from Quirk Overload like the Nomus or All For One if he's not careful can. Later {{downplayed}}, as it becomes clear that One For All is not exempt from the rule that a person can possess only one Quirk with ''no negative side effects''. It whittles away the user's lifespan if they already have a Quirk, most simply don't live long enough to notice.

The group of heroes that took the One For All Quirk through generations. Their presence is imprinted within One For All. At least once in their lifetimes, every user of One For All tends to see a brief flash of silhouettes of their predecessors. This is a symptom of One For All growing in power. In recent times, all the deceased users of One For All have been revived as spirits within the Quirk. They mentor the current user of One For All, Izuku Midoriya.
----
* AmbiguousSituation: It is unknown if they are [[LivingMemory living memories]] recreated by One For All, or the actual spirits housed in One For All in death.
* BequeathedPower: The primary means of succession for One For All was being the closest surviving hero after All For One's latest rampage. All Might was the first user to actually be sought out and trained by their predecessor [[TheAce and it shows]].
* BlessedWithSuck: Being given a Quirk for free (''and'' which can stack on top of your existing Quirk and any prior Quirks of its former users) is awesome on paper, but being granted One For All also ensures you now have a massive target on your head forever from the likes of All For One. Almost every deceased user of One For All lived short lives and died violently in battle against All For One. Another drawback of inheriting One For All is having their lifespan shortened. Even if the user avoided fighting All For One, they would die of RapidAging due to One For All sapping their life force. Only Quirkless people like All Might and Midoriya are immune to this drawback.
* BoringButPractical: None of their original Quirk's were all that flashy or powerful, but they were pretty useful in their particular niche. En encourages Midoriya to think of them like tools to be used whenever they'd be helpful since they're too weak and narrow in scope to warrant hiding.
* CantKillYouStillNeedYou: Following Yoichi's AccidentalMurder and realising that his Quirk had remained behind in Kudo, All For One obsessively tried to hunt down the current holder, only for each one to pass it on or hide from his surveillance before he caught up. It wasn't until Banjo's generation that All For One finally had the opportunity to try and steal his "brother" back, and by then, One For All was strong enough to resist his signature ability. Unwilling to repeat his "[[KinslayingIsASpecialKindOfEvil mistake]]" with Yoichi, All For One allowed the bearers to preserve his brother's memento whilst he set up a decades-long [[ComplexityAddiction convoluted plan]] to successfully assimilate the Quirk, arrogantly disregarding how strong each one was getting until his fateful loss to All Might. En's death, in particular, implies that All For One allowed Nana to flee with a sample of her mentor's hair to receive the Quirk from, rather than seriously pursue her through the flimsy cover of his final Smokescreen.
* CastFromLifespan: If anyone born with a Quirk inherits One For All, they will die of RapidAging assuming they are not killed by All For One. Only people who are [[CursedWithAwesome born Quirkless]] like All Might and Izuku are immune to these harmful effects due to them being empty vessels.
* ChekhovsGunman: They briefly appear as silhouettes during the U.A. Sports Festival to help Midoriya break out of mind control. All Might dismisses this as a one-time minor event. The spirits properly appear in Chapter 192 and from then on, play a significant role in shaping Midoriya.
* TheChooserOfTheOne: One For All is a Quirk that can be passed on to another and gains power as it is passed on. Given this, it is necessary to pass it on for it to become effective and powerful against All For One. The chooser aspect come in two varieties with the first being the act of passing on the Quirk and the second is tied into it's hidden nature.
** Played with in the passing it on to another user part. All Might explains that early wielders of One For All entrusted the Quirk to one of their surviving comrades, chosen at random, shortly before their deaths.
** PlayedStraight when it comes to the vestiges of the previous users that exist within One For All. It's implied that part of the reason why One For All cannot be stolen or removed is because the spirits within choose to stay with the current user not just the mechanic of being able to choose who One For All is passed on to. When the recently empowered/upgraded Tomura tried to steal One For All with All For One, Midoriya was able to resist through force of will and then the spirits of Tomura's grandmother Nana Shimura and Yoichi Shigaraki appeared to help him fight back with Yoichi stating that they have chosen to stay with Midoriya.
--->'''Yoichi Shigaraki:''' (to All For One) We will never go with you! We have chosen to remain within this boy!
* TheChosenOne: Defied, then discussed. All Might explains that many users of One For All were hastily entrusted with the Quirk during their respective predecessors' final moments, because they were the only survivors at that time. He calls them the entrusted ones. Most of them received One For All during their adulthood. On the other hand, All Might and Midoriya inherited One For All during their teens, and after undergoing months of rigorous training. Midoriya was the only one chosen to wield the greater powers of One For All i.e. the Quirks of the predecessors. Later on, after the revelation that only Quirkless users can use One For All safely, the past users note that it was serendipitous for All Might to meet Midoriya, a Quirkless individual who happened to fit the exact personality profile he wanted in a successor, right before their conflict with All For One was about to reach its final climax, and right before the Quirk itself was about to become too powerful to control anymore. They conclude that it can't be anything but an act of fate that allowed that meeting to happen and set them upon the path they're on now.
* ColourCodedForYourConvenience: Each member has a color tied to them. Yoichi's color is grey/white, the second one's is blue, then red for the third, green for Shinomori, orange for Lariat, purple for En, pink for Nana, yellow for All Might, and finally a lighter green for Midoriya.
* DeadPersonConversation: All of them are capable of speaking to Midoriya, although they can only speak briefly. After Izuku's Paranormal Liberation War, it becomes easier for the predecessors to speak to Izuku. Izuku is capable of vague speech while talking to them, albeit with some effort.
* DeaderThanDead: While the physical bodies of the previous users of One For All are long since dead the vestiges have remained within the Quirk allowing them to serve as {{Spirit Advisor}}s for Midoriya. In the climax of the FinalBattle however the previous users realise that the only way for them to defeat Shigaraki is to forcibly transfer their Quirk's into him with enough force to shatter against a mental scar left behind from his battle with Star and Stripe which will have the side effect of destroying the original vestige. Kudo even tells Midoriya not to mourn their passing as at this point, they have all long been phantoms of their original selves and their only desire now is to finish the battle once and for all.
* {{Determinator}}: The early users of One For All knew that they stood no chance against All For One, yet they continued to oppose him. All For One wiped them out with absurd ease, but just before dying, the users transferred One For All to a surviving compatriot, who would continue their work. In general, all wielders share this trait.
* DwindlingParty: In the final battle with Shigaraki, the vestiges agree to a dangerous plan to allow the villain to absorb them individually so that they could weaken him from within. The longer the battle goes, the fewer remain with Izuku.
* EndOfAnAge: Izuku Midoriya is effectively the final wielder of One For All. With the dwindling number of Quirkless individuals[[note]]only five percent of the population are Quirkless in Midoriya's generation, and it's projected that Quirklessness will be eradicated entirely by the time of the next one[[/note]], One For All cannot be safely passed down without [[RapidAging drastically shortening the user's lifespan]], and the remaining lifespan only shrinks as One For All amasses more power with each generation. The chances of finding a Quirkless person with a strong sense of justice are microscopic. Even if such a person did exist, it would be near-impossible for them to wield One For All given the physical strain and the rapid rate at which the Quirk is amassing power. Meaning that Midoriya is probably the world's last chance to end All For One's reign of terror for good.
* FlingALightIntoTheFuture: All the wielders fought and died to develop and pass on a power that might someday grow enough to defeat All For One for good. It took seven passes and nearly two centuries for One For All to become powerful enough to achieve this goal.
* TheGhost: The second and third users are never shown clearly, and only appear as silhouettes. All Might admits that in spite of his best efforts, he was unable to trace the two predecessors, although their Quirks exist within One For All. Finally subverted in chapter 310, where their faces are revealed.
* GreaterScopeParagon: Their entire chain, though especially Yoichi Shigaraki, for starting it and Nana Shimura, for inspiring and giving All Might many of the ideals and heroic beliefs that he would use as the series' BigGood. The others can be considered this due to laying the ground between Yoichi and Nana, as well as having taken part in the battle against All For One.
* HandWave: While it's known the transference aspect of One For All came from Yoichi, it's never explained who the stockpile came from, nor has any vestige of them appeared within the Quirk. It's later clarified that Yoichi's Quirk factor was left weak and incomplete because of his brother's monopolisation of nutrients whilst they were in the womb, as a result not even being recognised as a Quirk in its own right by his brother's power. It wasn't until it assimilated the Stockpiling ability to fill in the missing pieces of itself that it became "complete", which apparently erased the vestige of whomever the power belonged to in the first place.
* HopeBringer: The goal of the wielders was to create a Quirk that could topple the dominance of All For One and give the world hope. Nana, All Might, and Izuku deliberately mold themselves to embody this hope in their heroics.
* IdealHero: The users of One For All largely share a similar ideal of heroism to that of Yoichi Shigaraki, willing to risk life and limb to help people and stop All For One. The second and third {{subvert|edTrope}} this though. While they were the ones who freed Yoichi from his imprisonment, they don't share the same ideals he did. They were more accurately [[LaResistance resistance fighters]] trying to stop All For One who came upon Yoichi by chance, and had no issue killing people in the process, placing them closer to {{anti hero}}es. They in turn see the compassion shared by the other holders as a sign of weakness. While they're willing to help Midoriya, they make it no secret they feel his desire to save Tomura is foolish.
* TheImmune:
** They are the only ones who can fight All For One because One For All cannot be forcibly stolen due to the mechanics behind both its passing and the users' willpower resisting it. All For One believes that he can bypass that rule and steal the Quirk through brute force, and so he invested so much in Tomura Shigaraki for that purpose. Though they fail to steal it, the predecessors speaking to Midoriya afterward comment that in theory, All For One ''can'' steal One For All using a sufficiently powerful will to mentally overwhelm the One For All user (hence grooming Tomura's [[ThePowerOfHate hatred]]).
** Downplayed with Monoma's [[PowerCopying Copy]]. Monoma cannot properly copy Quirks that employ a stockpiling mechanism.
** As One For All comes with a HiveMind, it also renders the user functionally immune to Hitoshi Shinso's Brainwash Quirk, as the other minds can just activate One For All to cancel the effect.
** All Might and Midoriya are the only wielders to not suffer from the [[CastFromLifespan drawbacks]] [[RapidAging of possessing One For All]], due to being Quirkless when they received it.
* ItSucksToBeTheChosenOne: Considering how [[BigBad All For One]] is obsessed with One For All, possessing it means getting his attention, which is not a good thing. And if you already had a Quirk before receiving One For All, you still won't live long even if you manage to successfully evade All For One. Having One For All and another Quirk in the same body will cause One For All to "overflow" and start [[RapidAging draining the user's lifeforce,]] leading to an early death from old age. Only Quirkless users can avoid this side effect and unfortunately, the number of Quirkless people in the world is declining with every generation. Even if Midoriya were to pass on One For All to another Quirkless person, the latter wouldn't be able to wield One For All properly as the Quirk would amass even more power, damaging the new user's body every time they use it.
* LaResistance: They are suggested to have been part of a larger group dedicated to bringing down All For One. That said, All For One's overwhelming power meant that they had no real hope of defeating him save for [[FlingALightIntoTheFuture fostering One For All]] until it could actually pose a threat. It's later revealed that the Second was the leader of said resistance group, the Third being his NumberTwo, and that they came across Yoichi by complete chance before saving him.
* LastEpisodeNewCharacter: Hikage Shinomori, Daigoro Banjo, and En debut in the anime during the post-credits scene of Season 4's last episode.
* LegacyOfTheChosen: Each one was selected by the previous one to fight All For One.
* ManOfKryptonite: To All For One and other AFO-quirk users. Because One For All cannot be stolen, its users are pretty much the only people who can't be DePower'ed by AFO, and thus can force him into a straight fight. It's {{Downplayed}} however, as their actual performance against AFO [[TotalPartyKill was piss-poor]] until [[TheAce All Might]] showed up.
* MasterApprenticeChain: Nana Shimura was the first user who came up with the idea of training an eventual successor and entrusting them with One For All. She trained All Might, who in turn trained Midoriya. Unfortunately, the chain will likely end there, due to the recent discovery that only Quirkless individuals can safely inherit the Quirk; as the most recent scientific projections dictate that there will no longer be any Quirkless individuals by the time of the following generation, Izuku may very well be the last user of One For All.
* MechanicallyUnusualFighter: Except All Might, every One For All user has held at least two Quirks at some point of their lives. Yoichi had a transfer Quirk and stockpile Quirk for a while until they merged to become One For All. Midoriya has ''seven'' Quirks.
* MentorArchetype: All of them are supposed to be mentors for Midoriya since he needs their help to figure out how to use the Quirks he received from them.
* MysteriousPast: Records about most of the previous heroes are sparse, except for perhaps Nana Shimura. All Might was able to investigate their identities to help Midoriya, but found no leads for the second and third wielders. The later revelation that they were [[LaResistance resistance fighters]] during the period All For One was in charge implies said records were either destroyed or lost like many other details from that period.
* NotQuiteDead: Although many heroes lived several generations prior to the main storyline, their consciousness, dubbed as vestiges, is embedded within One For All. Most users get a vague glimpse of their predecessors. Midoriya has the exclusive ability to interact with all the predecessors.
* NumericalThemeNaming: All of the holders whose names have been revealed have a sound in their name homophonous to the order in which they received One For All:
** The first user is called Yo'''ichi''', containing the sound for "One"(一)
** '''Shi'''nomori contains the Japanese word for "four".
** Dai'''go'''ro, which sounds like "五" (five).
** Nana's name is one possible pronunciation of "seven".
** All Might's surname, "'''Ya'''gi", has the kanji "八" for "ya" or "eight".
** Midoriya's given name, "Izu'''ku'''", contains the kanji "九", or "ku", which is a possible pronunciation of the Japanese word for "nine" aside from "kyu".
* PassingTheTorch: They cultivated One For All and passed it down for nine generations. Later, it's revealed that if they had a Quirk alongside One For All then that Quirk was passed down too, though Midoriya is the first inheritor to access this ability.
* PersonalityPowers: What's been shown of the various personalities of the holders reflects in the various quirks they empowered OFA with.
** Yoichi's useless Transfer Quirk was weak just like him. But it was also the only Quirk that was immune to All For One's Quirk just like him [[HeartIsAnAwesomePower who defied All For One to the end.]] The Quirk can be willingly passed to others, representing Yoichi's selflessness. Furthermore, like his body, it's revealed that Yoichi's Quirk was left too frail and incomplete from All For One's monopolisation of nutrients from their mother, meaning it didn't have any power on its own. It wasn't until it received outside aid from All For One giving Yoichi the stockpiling Quirk that his Quirk Factor could assimilate it to become a genuine power Yoichi could use himself, much like Yoichi's attempts to stop his twin's evil were useless until he received aid from Kudo and Bruce. Going even further, the PsychicLink between the two Quirks and similar abilities they both posses all but state that if Yoichi's Quirk had developed naturally, he'd have developed his own version of All For One, the power to give ''and'' take Quirks, reflecting how both Quirks were actually held by what should have been twin siblings, before All For One's selfishness left Yoichi malformed.
** The 2nd user, Kudo, is demonstrated to be the most cynical and no-nonsense of the vestiges, focused on the necessity of taking All For One down for good, and being supportive of Izuku doing whatever is necessary to defeat All For One as quickly as possible, even if his actions increase the personal risk Izuku takes upon himself. His quirk, Gearshift, enables Izuku to increase his speed to the point that his attacks gain increased velocity and force, on a similar principle to Fa Jin without the need for charging, reflecting their close bond in life, and enables Izuku to reach a SuperMode that hits at 120% of One For All's strength, enough to overwhelm when All For One's 'perfected demon lord' self, but it comes with a [[RaceAgainstTheClock time limitation]] and the side-effect of inducing oxygen deprivation the longer he remains in this state, forcing Izuku to [[DeadlyUpgrade risk his life in exchange for the power to defeat his enemy]].
** The 3rd user, Bruce, is shown cautioning Izuku mid-fight to make careful use of his powers, and not rush in blindly, aka, biding his time and waiting for the opportune moment to strike, like [[ChargedAttack Fa Jin.]]
** Shinomori was a hermit who didn't get on well with people, and who dislikes close contact, with [[SpiderSense Danger Sense]] notably being used upon his proper introduction to allow him to avoid [[NoSenseOfPersonalSpace Banjo's]] attempts to get chummy with him.
** Similarly, Banjo appears to have been a close-range brawler who tends to get up close to people when talking to them, with [[CombatTentacles Black Whip]] letting his tie opponents up or drag them closer to him.
** En wears concealing clothing that obscures the lower half of his face, and [[SmokeOut Smokescreen]] allows him to create obscuring cover on command to hide himself from others.
** Nana espoused the benefits of uplifting everybody's spirits to Yagi, leading to him becoming a HopeBringer and always wearing a confident smile on his face to lift the spirits of those he was saving and [[NotQuiteFlight Float]] allows her to lift herself and others into the air.
** The only two who downplay this are Yagi and Izuku, both of who were [[UnSorcerer Quirkless,]] but that very nature of theirs allowed their bodies to better adapt to OFA than their predecessors, allowing [[HopeBringer Yagi]] to fulfill their long-held desire of beating AFO- twice, even- and [[TheParagon Izuku]] to beginning manifesting the quirks of the previous holders, as OFA technically ''became'' their quirk.
** Furthermore, both Yagi and Izuku embody the very concept of "one for all", showing that OFA itself is the embodiment of ''their'' personalities.
*** Yagi, straightforwardly, was the Symbol of Peace. The world's number-one hero, the world's symbol of peace and justice, one hero for all nations. As far as people can tell, he's relatively straightforward and easy to like, reflecting how he just relied on OFA's basic stockpiling effect and took to it easily.
*** Izuku, conversely, isn't the world's number-one hero ''yet'', but we know he '''will''' be in the future. One hero, fighting for all futures. But not just him, as his class are ''also'' the future number-one heroes alongside him, being empowered by his inspiration, and being there for him in turn; this shows that he's the one focal point for all the heroes. Unlike Yagi, he constantly exhibits hidden depths and employs quick thinking and strategy to win, and his personality quirks[[labelnote:*]]No pun intended.[[/labelnote]] make him initially off-putting, but extremely reliable once you get to know him; this reflects how he was the one to draw out the versatile Quirks buried deep within OFA, how hard it was for him to acclimate to OFA, and how he was able to make OFA truly his own much more than any of the past holders (and thus make it that much more reliable for him).[[note]]And, amusingly, is also reflected by the prior holders snapping him out of Brainwashing, showing that they were just as reliable for Izuku as he is for everyone else.[[/note]]
* PosthumousCharacter: All of them, with All Might and Midoriya being the obvious exceptions, died long before the story began. All Might confirms that all of them died at an early age, and only Shinomori was not killed by All For One.
* RightManInTheWrongPlace: Most of them were given One For All by desperation from their predecessors. Some just for being the only living people close to a dying holder. Despite this, each one did all they could to develop One For All has as much as possible and ensured the Quirk and knowledge of its purpose would be passed along before they died.
* ShoutOut:
** The concept of the vestiges resemble that of the relationship between Recca and the past Hokages in ''Manga/FlameOfRecca'', right down to there being exactly eight previous users resulting in the protagonist having eight powers (One For All is formed from two Quirks - the power stockpiling Quirk and Quirk-transferring Quirk - and by Midoriya's time there are six additional Quirks inside it, each from the Second to the Seventh users).
*** More broadly appear to also be inspired by the Force Ghosts from Franchise/StarWars, their spirits sticking around long enough to provide support to the next generation taking on their mortal enemy.
** A power that can be passed from another that is weak from the start but as time passes, it grows stronger. Also the current user has a green and black motif that unlocks his individual moveset as times goes on and at same time those moves can get stronger by continuous usage by the user? It happens to be a shoutout from ''Franchise/BlazBlue'' particular from Susanoo, the game's {{Final Boss}}. He is also voiced by Kenta Miyake who is also the voice actor of All Might.
* SlidingScaleOfIdealismVsCynicism: In chronological order, even! Starting from the second, the successors are showing to be fairly cynical and pragmatic, because they were the ones that faced AFO [[TheDarkAges at the height of his power and when OFA was at its weakest.]] However, as the successors proceed down the generations, OFA gets stronger, and the influence of AFO dwindles due to them being able to more successfully resist him, so the successors are shown to be more light-hearted and hopeful, culminating in [[TheCape Yagi]] and [[TheParagon Izuku.]] This causes some friction when the 2nd and 3rd wielders have to be convinced by Yoichi to lend Izuku their aid, because they don't agree with Izuku's WideEyedIdealist outlook. The only exception to this is Yoichi, who also shares a fairly idealistic outlook with Izuku, even though his is tempered with a nuanced, realist outlook from the hard life experiences he lived as AFO's brother, witnessing his atrocities first-hand and being powerless to stop them himself.
* SuperEmpowering: How they pass down One For All to future generations. It's later revealed that Midoriya has inherited the stronger versions of all their Quirks and is capable of wielding them.
* SuperStrength: All of them had it, each one stronger than their predecessor.
* SuperiorSuccessor: Given One For All's cumulative nature, every successor is stronger than their predecessor. That means Midoriya is potentially the strongest user if he achieves mastery over the Quirk. The Quirk's power isn't the only thing that improves, as its ability to allow multiple souls to exist in one body developed as well. If its previous users had Quirks of their own, they are assimilated and by the time it reached Midoriya, it gained the ability to begin manifesting them, with the same cumulative nature as the main Quirk.
* WalkingSpoiler: As of current events, the heroes have been revived as spirits and their purpose is to mentor Midoriya. Their first true appearance changes everything we knew about One For All.
* WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway: All of the bearers of One For All were either [[UnSorcerer Quirkless]] or had Quirks with little offensive power. For instance, Yoichi could only give his power away and Nana's Quirk was simply [[NotQuiteFlight levitation]]. This is {{justified|Trope}}, as All For One purged anyone he encountered with a Quirk powerful enough to pose a threat to him.
* YouAreNotAlone:
** They pass this message to Midoriya at the end of his dream, seemingly welcoming him kindly into their midst.
** Lariat encourages Midoriya to carry out One For All's will and not to worry since they will all be with him.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: The wielders who possessed Quirks before inheriting One For All are subject to this, assuming that they escape All For One. Their lifespans are shortened and in their final years, their bodies will weaken until they perish. As such, only Quirkless inheritors can properly wield One For All due to them being empty vessels. All Might possessed godlike prowess, while Midoriya possesses unprecedented affinity with the esoteric aspects of One For All.

->''"The hero of justice struggled and suffered, and at last, was able to save them all. Did you know, big brother? [[JusticeWillPrevail Villains always lose in the end!]]"''

The first wielder of "One For All", the younger brother of All For One who had a strong sense of justice. Because his Quirk was completely unnoticed before One For All's creation, Yoichi was presumed to be Quirkless and could only watch his brother commit atrocities one after the other. Eventually, in a twisted showcase of affection, his brother decided to forcefully implant a Quirk within him, forming "One For All". Yoichi was able to pass his Quirk down to successors hoping one day it will grow powerful enough to defeat his brother. He's the first One For All user to talk directly to Midoriya as a vestige.
----
* ArcWords: Whenever anybody talks about Yoichi or his incumbent Quirk that started everything, they always mention how he and it were "weak" and "frail". This stands in contrast to the absolute powerhouse his power has matured into through the cumulative efforts of the who inherited his will, such that his brother cannot win against him in a fair fight anymore.
* BeyondRedemption: While during his life, Yoichi tried to find ''any'' good in his brother and was frantic to find ''any'', by modern day he's seemingly accepted that no, there wasn't and never will be.
* BigDamnHeroes: Appears in Chapter 287 to help Nana and Midoriya successfully expel All For One and Tomura from the vestige world as well as thwart his attempt to steal One For All.
* BornUnlucky: Yoichi's life was arguably the worst out of every One For All user, who had each faced tragic circumstances in some way themselves. With nobody except his heinous supervillain brother to raise him, Yoichi lived in squalor surviving off whatever scraps All For One deemed he needed to survive and little else. This was despite Yoichi's pure-hearted hope that his brother might actually be redeemable, which was sadly proven to be irrevocably wrong when All For One revealed his desire to be [[MaouTheDemonKing an almighty Demon Lord]] and eventually forcing a Quirk upon him in the aim of making him join him. After he was rescued, he ended up [[FamilyUnfriendlyDeath dying gruesomely anyway]], albeit having passed One For All on and [[FlingALightIntoTheFuture starting a chain that would hopefully defeat his brother one day.]] And despite all of that, his spirit endures within One For All to see the conflict through to the very end, proving he's [[HeartIsAnAwesomePower as great a hero as all of his successors despite being the weakest of them all.]]
* TheBusCameBack: Goes 133 chapters without mention until he finally reappears when Midoriya witnesses one of his memories.
* CainAndAbel: He's the Abel to his brother, the villainous All For One. The two had conflicting views regarding the Quirk phenomenon and the anarchy of humanity. All For One saw it as a means to exploit for power whereas Yoichi believed that Quirks should be used to restore justice. It's later revealed that he and AFO are actually Fraternal ''twins'', with Yoichi's vastly different appearance from his brother coming about from AFO monopolising most of the nutrients from their mother in the womb, leading to his naturally frail constitution from birth.
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Of the LivingEmotionalCrutch character. It's eventually revealed that underneath all the lies and falsehoods he gives about his motivations, All For one ''genuinely'' did care about his twin, and was emotionally devastated by their separation, especially since [[KinslayingIsASpecialKindOfEvil his own actions seemingly made it permanent]]. This is notable, as the narrative repeatedly enforces the fact that beyond Yoichi, All For One is [[TheSociopath absolutely incapable of considering others in any capacity]], and actual revels in this as a strength. However, because All For One so adamantly believes VirtueIsWeakness, he's in self-denial about any positive qualities he may possess. This means that Yoichi's best efforts to make his brother understand that GoodFeelsGood were rejected out of hand, and his connection to Yoichi only made the latter a walking DoomMagnet for anybody that All For One saw as getting close to him or keeping them apart. Even when All For One lets slips in his final monologue that he committed so many acts of villainy because he believed it'd make him remembered forever in infamy, he still doesn't understand that he really wanted companionship and acceptance by others, being fundamentally incapable of recognising his inner weakness because of his overblown ego.
* {{Determinator}}: A minor one. Despite being so weak, Yoichi continued to oppose his extremely powerful brother. He tells All For One that just like the comics, powerful villains always lose to the heroes of justice. He passed down One For All to future generations of heroes to defeat his brother. Even after his death, he helps Midoriya by sharing some of his memories about All For One and assures to watch over him.
** This trait of his is also what allows One For All to be immune to All For One. So long as his will isn't broken, One For All cannot be stolen by All For One.
* DisabilityImmunity: It turns out that the reason All For One never stole his brother's Quirk, even when they were infants, is that it, like Yoichi himself, was left half-formed and incomplete from his twin's monopolisation of the nutrients and resources from their mother whilst in the womb, as a result not even being recognised as a proper Quirk Factor by his sibling's power. It wasn't until he received the Stockpiling Quirk that his incomplete factor was able to assimilate it to fix the missing parts of itself and become One For All. If not for that, it's greatly hinted that Yoichi would have developed his own version of All For One, the ability to give ''and'' take Quirks, just like his sibling, rather than only half the power.
* DisappointedInYou: Expresses his great dismay to Kudo about how his brother squandered his own Quirk and corresponding potential to be a decent person. All For One had such a great capacity to do good with his power, and instead chose to inflict suffering by taking everything he could get his hands on. If All For One had ever thought for even a second about helping somebody else, then countless lives could have been saved.
* DoomMagnet: Owing to his psychopathic brother's absolute ''obsession'' with him, being the only other being on the planet he can consider in any capacity besides himself, anything related to Yoichi became this. Kudo's rescue of him lead not only to his own brutal death and the destruction of his rebel movement, but All For One wiping out his entire bloodline and any potential heir he could have left. Every single holder of One For All bar [[TheHermit Shinomori]] was eventually killed by his hands, and in Nana and All Might's case, All For One's malicious enmity extended to attacking the things they held most dear (their family line and the stable society created by the Symbol of Peace respectively). By the FinalBattle, All For One's ceaseless effort to absorb One For All has created an all-powerful and [[OmnicidalManiac destructive]] villain who intends to ''destroy the country itself single-handily'', and poses a potential threat to the rest of the world as well, all as a side-effect of Yoichi's existence.
* DramaticIrony:
** His useless transfer Quirk was the one Quirk that was immune to All For One's stealing ability. Eventually, it became an important component of One For All, which generations later became one of the strongest Quirks ever.
** Though it was never discovered during his natural lifespan, AFO would often justify the things he did as being for Yoichi's own good, such as locking him in the vault, due to his frail body. A flashback to their birth reveals that Yoichi was born that way due to AFO himself, who naturally monopolised the majority of the nutrients from their mother in the womb on instinct, leaving Yoichi to grow up weak and frail as a result.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: All Might calls him someone who had a strong sense of justice. Many chapters later, Midoriya finds out that the claim is true. Yoichi is seen condemning All For One for his callous and selfish attitude.
* EvenEvilCanBeLoved: Yoichi is likely the ''only'' person in the entire world to have any genuine love for his brother All For One, even after having long accepted him as BeyondRedemption. His reaction to Bakugo defeating All For One isn't victory or joy, but a forelorn and solemn look.
* TheEveryman: In contrast to his successors, or basically everybody else in the world around him when he was alive, a combination of Yoichi's frail body and his quirk being non-functional for direct combat, to the point he was thought to be quirkless at first, meant that Yoichi was at best an average human being in a world of superhumans. Perhaps even weaker than that. This didn't stop him from staunchly opposing All For One at every turn, no matter how futile his efforts at the time, nor his tale serving to inspire his future successors to carry on the fight in his stead. This makes him quite similar to [[UnSorcerer Midoriya]] at the start of the series.
* EyesOutOfSight: His bangs covered his eyes for the most part, although we do get to see his right eye when he's reaching out to Midoriya. This is no longer the case in his later appearances.
* TheFaceless: Downplayed, during Midoriya's dream, glimpses of his face are visible, but his full face is never shown to the viewer or Midoriya. At the most, only half of his face is visible which allows a clear image of his eye, but not much else. Later chapters reveal his face as an ordinary young man. This provides a contrast to his brother, who is literally and metaphorically [[TheBlank faceless]] by the present day, and whose facial features are always obscured in flashbacks to prevent his full appearance been shown-- specifically, his eyes are always heavily shadowed, even in situations where other parties can clearly see his whole face.
* {{Flashback}}: Yoichi presents one to Midoriya, which gives him an insight on All For One as well as the chain of events that led to One For All's creation.
* FlingALightIntoTheFuture: Although every One For All user passes it on as a MasterApprenticeChain, Yoichi specifically did so in the hope that someone would succeed where he failed in defeating his brother.
* GenerationXerox:
** A non-blood-related one. Yoichi has many things in common with Midoriya. Both were bullied for being weak and Quirkless. Both have a strong sense of justice. Both are obsessed with the concept of heroes. Both are {{determinator}}s in their own way. And both of them wielded One For All, except Midoriya has greater Quirk potential.
** He also has a striking resemblance to his brother's protege (and descendant of a bearer of One For All) Tomura, driven home with the scene where he reaches out to Midoriya in a way echoing Tomura's iconic five-fingered touches. The resemblance goes deeper than appearance, however: like Midoriya and the first bearer, Tomura started as a bullied and abused survivor with a love of heroes and aspirations of being one despite seeming to be Quirkless. Given what we know about All For One's love of cruel irony, there's a good chance the choice was in part intended to simultaneously {{invoke|dTrope}} and {{exploit|edTrope}} the opportunity for this trope when he noticed the similarities.
* GoneHorriblyWrong: He's the one that introduced All For One to comic books in their youth, noting how the images could convey a message about the hopes and dreams of the fictional characters, hoping to teach his brother that GoodFeelsGood. Unfortunately, All For One [[RootingForTheEmpire identified more with the Demon Lord]] in the comic and went on the model his behavior and actions on him, learning how to [[PragmaticVillainy modify his psychopathic behavior to achieve his desires]]. Yoichi tried to dissuade him from this by pointing out how TheGoodGuysAlwaysWin, only for his twin to arrogantly dismiss that part of the fantasy. By the present day this turned into GoneHorriblyRight instead, as becoming a genuine CardCarryingVillain did indeed make All For One a less effective threat against the heroes than he believed, much to Yoichi's [[IWarnedYou solemn sadness]].
* GreaterScopeParagon: As the source of "One For All", and thus the root of the century-long resistance against All For One. Interestingly, he failed to defeat his brother in the past and was forced to leave his task to his successors.
* TheHeart:
** This basically seems to be his role within the vestiges, especially with his frail body and quirk making him more a SupportPartyMember in effect to the more frontline fighters who inherited One For All after him. He's the one to encourage and motivate Izuku despite the enormity of the task before him, comforts Yagi's shade and Nana Shimura when they're moved to tears by Izuku's determination to save Tomura because of the example All Might gave him of what a true hero was, and he's the one to ultimately convince the Second and Third wielders to lend Izuku their aid, despite them thinking the same idealistic desire to SaveTheVillain is [[SillyRabbitIdealismIsForKids ridiculous]]. Accordingly, during All For One's attempt to steal One For All, he's able to provide the greatest resistance against his brother's PowerParasite abilities, with All For One noting that his willpower is every inch a match for his own.
** The narrative makes it clear that whilst Yoichi's body and Quirk were left weakened and incomplete from his brother's obsession with taking, the one part of Yoichi that [[LackOfEmpathy All For One]] could never take from him was his caring heart. Accordingly, his obsession with claiming Yoichi is framed in such a manner that makes it seem like All For One wants to take Yoichi's heart from himself in order to feel "complete" at last.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: On its own, Yoichi's Quirk was basically useless, only giving him the ability to pass his Quirk on to another. However, once combined with the power stockpiling quirk, it allowed generations of strength to be continuously passed on from one user to another. Further, it melds with all Quirks it comes into contact with, meaning at a certain point along the cycle it gave the latest torchbearer the abilities of ''all'' its previous users.
* HeroicBastard: His mother was a prostitute who died giving birth to [[BastardBastard All for One]] and him.
* HeroicWillpower: While all but-powerless in life, he resisted his brother's attempts to dominate him to the bitter end. Even in death, his will helps his successors repel the influence of his brother in the world of the vestiges.
* HistoryRepeats: The flashback of his death reveals that he was blown to pieces by his sibling in an outburst of anger, leaving behind only his severed hand, which All For One would preserve as a twisted memento of him. Given the parallels to Tomura/Tenko Shimura's own backstory and the arch-villain's intentional grooming of Tomura as a twisted mirror of Yoichi, it raises further implications that All For One may have been involved with events.
* IdenticalStranger: Yoichi bears a strong semblance to Tomura Shigaraki since they both have a slender build as well as similar hairstyles. All For One even bestowed upon Tomura his own claimed family name when giving him a MeaningfulRename, further drawing parallels to Yoichi, who was similarly "named" in such a way to mark his as All For One's first possession. TheReveal that All For One killed Yoichi in an emotional outburst at his brother's rejection of his evil ways and left behind only his severed hand as a memento of him further implies that All For One is [[PsychologicalProjection intentionally trying to mold Tomura in his brother's image]], to become the "yoichi" he wanted by his side. This gives further creepy undertones to his singular focus on assimilating Tomura's personality to "become" him as his Perfected Demon Lord self.
* IDieFree: Yoichi willingly accepts Kudo's plan to smash the Vestiges themselves into Tomura' mental injuries through his Transfer ability, aware this will also likely mean the absolute destruction of his current epithelial existence. When the vestige of his brother resurfaces to assume control of Tomura's body after the tactic works in weakening his unrelenting willpower, All For One confirms that despite Izuku transferring all of One For All into Tomura, his brother's vestige is completely gone, and he has been forever denied the chance to "reunite" with Yoichi, a fact that drives him into [[DespairEventHorizon a depressed melancholic attitude]] even as he becomes [[TranquilFury furiously committed]] to ending Izuku for his part in keeping Yoichi apart from him.
* {{Irony}}: When he was alive, he was non-consensually locked by his brother in a massive fortified vault room to protect him and keep him safe while All For One worked on making him give up on his 'pointless' resistance towards him and his eventual goals of becoming '[[CardCarryingVillain The Demon King of Evil]]'. After his passing, the HomeBase that eventually forms within One For All where the past wielders meet and converse with each other is a mental recreation of that same room, the only feature in the back void that exists within the MentalWorld of One For All. Despite technically being locked in the same room again, Yoichi is happier this time around because he's able to oppose All For One alongside his [[YouAreNotAlone comrades]], with the room instead being a symbolic example of WhereItAllBegan, rather than a symbol of oppression for him.
** He's the GreaterScopeParagon to an entire generation of heroes, including the strongest ones in the world by the present date. Despite that, he's the only one of them that never actually became a hero in his own right, with the others all having performed resistance actions against All For One's empire during the early days, or taking up the role as a hero once the profession started to become more widespread. Yoichi's frail body and non-combat quirk meant that he could never once actually save anybody through his own actions, only provide aid and support to those that could.
** His frail physique meant he failed to ever actually "fight" his brother despite being the origin point that allowed his successors to ever have a chance in battle against him. However, him introducing the young All For One to comic books lead to his EvilTwin developing an obsession with emulating them, having become a real-life CardCarryingVillain by the present day rather than the OmnicidalManiac he was developing into. This leads to him falling into the ''exact'' same pitfalls that undid said villains in the comic and makes him much less effective compared to other "villains" who aren't focused on embracing the title. Yoichi's actions caused the greatest deterrent to his brother's villainy despite his seeming ineffectiveness amongst the holders.
** His name and his power are all based around him giving of himself or being given to others, as a mark of All For One's control. Yet, he was only able to use his Quirk and start a lineage of heroes with it because he was finally given something himself by his possessive brother.
* ItIsDehumanising: Arguably {{Inverted}}. All For One humanises Yoichi's Quirk One For All by referring to it as if it ''were'' Yoichi himself, looking forward to his intended absorption of it as a fated "reunion" between the brothers. This flips it around to playing the trope straight, because All For One cannot see the difference between Yoichi and his power, considering his brother a valuable "possession" he's lost that he's obsessed with reclaiming at all costs, irrespective of how Yoichi himself thinks about the situation.
* JusticeWillPrevail: Yoichi is of the conviction that no matter how powerful a villain is, they ultimately lose to heroes.
* KinslayingIsASpecialKindOfEvil: For all the evil actions that he revels in, the impulsive murder of Yoichi seems to be the one act that All For One actually regrets. He falls into a VillainousBSOD once he processes what happened to his little brother, allowing Kudo and Bruce to flee, and on realising that a part of Yoichi remains in his Quirk, becomes obsessed with claiming it to make up for his mistake. Kudo even taunting him with the memory of what he'd done (which All For One seemed to have blocked out) earned him the villain's undying hatred, as he [[NeverMyFault rationalised it being Kudo's fault]] for taking Yoichi out of the vault in the first place. The [[HistoryRepeats parallels]] between Yoichi's death and Tenko Shimura's DarkAndTroubledPast, along with All For One's intentional grooming of Tomura in his brother's image, imply that he was involved in Tenko's TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening as "proof" another "twisted child" could do the same thing in similar circumstances.
* TheLeader: Despite being the frailest of them all, Yoichi's benevolent and intuitive nature has him naturally settle into a leadership role among the prior One For All users. Best symbolized by being at the head of the HomeBase arrangement of council chairs. He even forces the second and third users to "play nice" and teach Izuku how to use their Quirks when they show their disapproval by staring at the wall instead of speaking with him.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Though All For One had no material use for his brother, Yoichi's true value, which went mostly unknown to his brother, was being his only connection to his emotions in his life. [[DeconstructedCharacterArchetype This is not a good thing]], as Yoichi sparks in All For One the 'dream' of conquering the world and being forever feared and remembered. His death just triggers the villain to spend nearly a century ruining the lives of others in a convoluted plot to reclaim his most valued 'possession', and once Yoichi's vestige is well and truly gone, whatever theatrics, supervillainy, and angry outbursts keeping All For One in check vanish, resulting in a cold, hollow psychopath that now has nothing left to lose.
* MeaningfulName: His given name, Yoichi, contains the character for "one" (''ichi''), combined with the character for "giving" (''yo''), indicating both his status as the first holder of One For All, as well as the nature of his Quirk. It also turns out to be intentionally bestowed upon him by All For One as a means of marking Yoichi as his first possession in life, which becomes doubly-meaningful that Yoichi eventually escaped from his brother's control and changed the meaning of his name to one that befitted others rather than his ControlFreak brother.
* MirrorCharacter: A flashback towards the end of the story shows that not only do he and Izuku have near-identical personalities, but very similar upbringings too; albeit with Yoichi's being even harsher. They were both children born with a great disadvantage and weak bodies who had brother figures (All For One and Bakugo respectively) with amazingly powerful Quirks who harshly bullied them in return, but with whom they also shared some more "geeky" interests as children (comics and hero trading cards respectively). The most succinct example of their similarities is when Yoichi stands up to his brother after the latter killed multiple anti-meta-people militia members in a display of defiance that's nearly identical with the series' opening scene of Izuku standing up to Bakugo for bullying some poor kid.
* MoralityPet: '''Heavily''' {{Downplayed}} and ultimately {{Subverted}}. With All For One possessing Tomura against his will, Yoichi is currently the only person All For One has been shown to apparently care about, refusing to (deliberately) kill him despite his rebellion and instead trying to find a middle ground with him. However, the 'pet' aspect is more prevalent than the 'morality', as Yoichi was kept locked alone in a room and denied any agency in his life until he 'willingly' submitted to his brother's rule, either by coercion or by force, akin to an abused dog mistreated by its owner. Even when All For one is shown to be [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness uncharacteristically saddened]] by his passing, that's ultimately a result of All for For [[NeverMyFault refusing to admit that, in a possessive outburst, he was the one who killed his 'first' possession]] when Kudo [[ItsAllAboutMe 'stole' Yoichi from his grasp]]; this is the only way All For One can understand his attachment with Yoichi.
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: For some reason, he could sense Tomura awakening with greater power, and [[HearingVoices warns Midoriya about it, telling him to stop Tomura.]] Also sensed the fighter pilots circling back around to give Midoriya a lift to U.A. when he'd been transported away from where he needed to be during the FinalBattle. Then, his brother going all out and releasing '''every''' quirk in sheer fury elicits a grim warning from Yoichi.
* MysteriousWaif: Gender Inverted example. While lacking the more {{Moe}} aspects associated with this trope, Yoichi fits this trope to a T.
* NoBodyLeftBehind: It's shown that he died fleeing with Kudo through a sewer when All For One attacked their resistance movement in an attempt to reclaim his "possession". Seeing Yoichi running away from him and taking the hand of somebody other than him caused All For One to have an angry outburst, lashing out with his powers and blowing his sibling into pieces from behind, with his body chances falling into the sewer waters. The only piece of him that could be recovered was the hand that Kudo was holding, which All For One then went on to preserve.
* NoFullNameGiven: {{Zigzagged|Trope}}. His name is eventually revealed to be Yoichi, but it turns out he technically doesn't ''have'' a family name, as "Yoichi"[[labelnote:*]]containing the kanji 与 which means “bestow” or “give”, and 一 which means “one”, thus "One who Gives."[[/labelnote]]was the name given to him by his brother to mark him as the first possession All For One had. All For One later claims that "Shigaraki" is his family name when bestowing it upon Tomura as part of his new villain identity, but [[ConsummateLiar it's implied to be a lie]] and another means of marking the child as his possession, exactly like Yoichi, as part of his grooming tactics to [[IdenticalStranger turn Tomura into Yoichi's image]]. It's never clarified if All For One genuinely took up a family name for the twins or not, and Yoichi is only ever referred to by his first name by others. The point is later made that "All For One" considers the term to be his real name enough for [[IKnowYourTrueName New Order]] to affect him through it, suggesting that he never took an "ordinary" name up.
* NotQuiteDead: Generations after his death, Yoichi's soul was dormant within One For All. Yoichi and his successors finally reawakened within the ninth user, Midoriya.
* PolarOppositeTwins: Chapter 407 shows that he and All For One are actually twins, and it's made clear both in the flashback and throughout the rest of the narrative they couldn't be more different. Yoichi is kind, noble, and brave despite his frail constitution and possessing One For All when it was at its weakest. All For One, by contrast, is a callous, vain, and cowardly narcissist who strives to enhance his and, later, Shigaraki's bodies in order to become a PhysicalGod. He also holds the most versatile and dangerous Quirk in the series that proves a significant problem even a hundred years after Quirks first came to be, which makes it all the more significant that Yoichi defied him [[ATrueHero even being weak as he was.]]
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Somewhat. He actually died before he could live out a full natural lifespan thanks to All For One's possessive and destructive attachment to him, but is effectively "resurrected" within his Quirk by the present day, a whole nine generations later. It's further clarified that he and All For One were actually born a whole year before the Luminescent baby was officially documented by the world, meaning the pair of them may be the very first Quirk-users in history.
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: All For One initially though he'd stolen Yoichi's Quirk on instinct when they were born, but on conducting tests, discovered that he ''did'' have a Quirk factor -- just one that was too weak and insubstantial for his own power to recognise as something that could be stolen. It wasn't until he granted him the Stockpiling Quirk, which got assimilated by Yoichi's half-formed one, that his power became complete and something all of his own.
* SoProudOfYou: When All For One insults Midoriya for recklessly wielding One For All, Yoichi praises Midoriya's HeroicResolve and cites that as the reason One For All will remain with him.
** Once again he is impressed with Izuku's reply to Nana, and assures to support him in his journey.
* SparingThemTheDirtyWork: In a sense, due to a combination of his weak body and power in life, and the fact that [[EvenEvilCanBeLoved he still possesses familial love towards his Twin despite all the evil he's committed]], even if he's accepted that he's BeyondRedemption, this was the relationship between him and every other hero who stepped up to fight All For One in his place, Torch Bearer and otherwise. Yoichi is the focus of All For One's obsession with his Quirk and the power it holds, but it fell to others to actually take him down, with Yoichi only able to provide moral support to them. This is notable, because he's the ''only'' person in the world this could apply to: everybody else rejoices when [[HatedByAll All For One]] is finally defeated for good, whilst Yoichi merely has a solemn expression at seeing his Twin's utter downfall.
* StringyHairedGhostGirl: Gender-inverted. His design is almost right out of horror manga. His looks are also about the only terrifying thing about him, [[TheParagon since he's a decent fellow]]. He also fits the ghost part pretty well too, since he's currently hitching a ride in Midoriya's body and giving him encouragement in a pretty creepy way a century after his own body kicked the bucket.
* SuperEmpowering: A limited version. His Quirk Factor was left malformed and incomplete from All For One's monopolisation of the nutrients and resources from their mother in the womb, as a result not even counting as a proper Quirk for his brother's power to steal. It wasn't until he was granted another Quirk that his half-formed power was able to be complete, allowing him to use this trait himself to benefit others.
* SuperPrototype: Inverted. His One For All is the most powerful Quirk in existence and the most powerful ability any of its users possessed, but it's also cumulative. As such, he's the weakest One For All user.
* SympathyForTheDevil: When Bakugo finally defeats All For One, a shot of Yoichi watching from the Vestige World shows him forelorn and solemn in contrast to everyone else. Even though he's accepted All For One as BeyondRedemption, he still is pained to see his twin brother's fate.
* ThisLooksLikeAJobForAquaman: Despite how useless Yoichi's Quirk to transfer his Quirk seems, the fact it can only be transferred to the person the user desires made it functionally immune to All For One's Quirk stealing ability. Once it combined with another power stockpiling quirk and became "One For All", it made him and his successors the only superpowered individuals that could go toe to toe with All For One.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: He tells All For One that his pursuit for power at the expense of innocents is wrong and that he can never forgive him.
* TragicDream: It's revealed he spent most of his and All For One's lives together hoping against hope that All For One might have ''some'' good in him and could be redeemed, due to the faint memories of how his brother held onto his hand to save him from drowning at birth. There was none, and the narration implies that All For One simply might have been ''born'' evil, meaning Yoichi never had a chance of redeeming him -- his hand-holding was merely an extension of All For One's possessive desire to never let anything he "owned" be taken away from him, especially Yoichi. By present day, he seems to have long since realized All For One is BeyondRedemption.
* TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening: He managed to use his Quirk only once in his lifetime, apparently passing it to Kudo via touch instinctively when his brother lashed out and blew his body to smithereens.
* TranquilFury: Isn't very thrilled to see his elder brother in the vestige world, and isn't fazed when he watches All For One trying to manipulate Tomura. He coolly rebuts All For One's insults about Midoriya while expelling him from One For All. Given it's revealed that All For One impulsively ''killed him'' because he didn't want to be controlled by him any more, it's understandable.
* TheUnreveal: It's not made clear how exactly Yoichi managed to pass One For All onto Kudo, with it being hinted that he passed it onto him via touch in an [[TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening instinctive reaction from the trauma]] of his brother fatally attacking him from behind, or a piece of his splattered blood managing to find its way into [[BloodSplatteredWarrior Kudo]] from an open wound.
* WhamLine: The fact he is fully aware of Midoriya and that he can hold a DeadPersonConversation with him is shocking because All Might had assumed this to be impossible. Also, paranormal phenomena are unheard of:
-->'''Yoichi Shigaraki:''' So you're the ninth...
* WhamShot: Midoriya's dream concludes with Yoichi and all other One For All users looking at him.
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: He refutes his older brother's torrent of insults about Midoriya being a simpleton unworthy of being the Ninth Wielder, saying the boy is no mistake, and his determination to [[RuleOfEmpathy fight for others even at his own expense]] means the power of One For All will stay with him.
* YouAreNotAlone: He tells this to Midoriya in a dream, guaranteeing him that he'll be watched over.
* YourSoulIsMine: Whilst it's unclear if the vestiges are actually souls or something else, this is All For One's aim with Yoichi's vestige within his Quirk: planning to assimilate their Quirks and vestiges into one within Tomura's enhanced body to become the "perfected Demon lord" and ensure Yoichi will never again be stolen away from him. The additional detail of Tomura having been prepared as an evil mirror of Yoichi has [[{{Yandere}} disturbing implications]] about All For one's obsession with "taking" his brother.

Yoichi's successor. It is revealed that he was once a leader of a rebel group that opposed All For One in his early days. He and his comrade, the third user, rescued Yoichi from his prison. His Quirk is Gearshift, which lets him increase a target's speed up to four stages, all while making it ignore the laws of inertia to do so.
----
* AloofAlly: Midoriya initially couldn't see either him or the third torchbearer in his MentalWorld. When his connection to OFA increases, both he and his comrade have their backs turned on him, revealing they're more like Vigilantes than Heroes, not sharing his optimistic views on [[RuleOfEmpathy saving everyone]], including Villains.
* AmbiguouslyRelated: He bears a physical resemblance to Bakugo both in his looks and his costume. In addition, he exhibits AntiHero tendencies that clash with Midoriya's ideals, similar to Bakugo early on. Finally, when Bakugo and All For One properly clash against each other in Chapter 405, All For One gets a brief glimpse of Kudo, suggesting that the Second Wielder may have been one of Bakugo's relatives or even an ancestor. However, Chapter 408 has All for One state that he killed every woman and child close to Kudo and almost certainly extinguished his bloodline, making it unlikely that Bakugo is his descendant. Despite this, All for One believes that Bakugo inherits Kudo's resolve, which crossed time and space to continue to antagonize him.
* AntiHeroSubstitute: To Yoichi. Though they shared the goal of defeating All For One, Kudo is far more willing to use violence (and far more dismissive of the compassionate Midoriya) than his idealistic predecessor.
* ArchEnemy: Of all of the Torchbearers before All Might, Kudo was the one All For One despised the most. Not only was he a rebel leader against him, Kudo was the one to 'steal' Yoichi from him, leading to All For One killing Yoichi and learning his Quirk had been transferred to Kudo. All For One hates Kudo so much, seeing a resemblence in Bakugo drives him into a gigantic VillainousBreakdown and causes him to jeopardize his entire plan just to try and kill him out of pure hatred. He even admits his hatred of him is much more instinctive and primal than his animosity towards All Might, which has its roots in how [[NeverMyFault he refuses to admit his culpability in Yoichi's death]] in favour of blaming Kudo.
* ArmCannon: Chapter 310 reveals that his gauntlets are a Type-2 version, with Chapter 369 all but confirming that it was a combination of actual firearm and a support item for his Quirk.
* BadassNormal: Relative to his successors, he was this. He received One For All at almost its weakest state, due to Yoichi's frail body not being able to pass on much power. However, even without One For All he was already an experienced RebelLeader capable of taking on All For One's forces at the height of his power.
* TheCynic: Neither he nor his comrade, would acknowledge Midoriya as the Ninth torchbearer, refusing to impart their wisdom or quirks onto him. The second in particular asserted that fighting evil means to kill or be killed, and denounced Midoriya's desire [[AllLovingHero to save Tenko Shimura]] as [[SillyRabbitIdealismIsForKids a fool's errand]].
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: His Meta Ability grew exponentially with the growth of One For All, and that made it volatile. See TooAwesomeToUse.
* DyingSmirk: The second page of Chapter 369 shows that he gave one to All For One before the latter kills him.
* EveryoneHasStandards: He's a hardcore AntiHero who thinks Midoriya's idealism is impractical for the task they'll have to face, and has killed enemies in the past as part of his resistance against All For One, but even he didn't have it in him to coldly execute Yoichi when they discovered him sealed in the vault under his brother's "protective" care. When All For One impulsively killed Yoichi in a moment of anger, he and Kudo are shown to be [[KinslayingIsASpecialKindOfEvil equally affected by the act]], with All For One falling into a stone-faced VillainousBSOD as contrasted to Kudo's own look of shock and disgust at him, with tears forming in his eyes.
* GoodIsNotNice: He was the leader of a rebel group that sought to bring down All For One during his early days, but his attitude towards Midoriya, especially hearing his desire to try and save Tomura, make it clear he's more of an AntiHero than the other predecessors. Yoichi has to outright remind him he was willing to go out on a limb to save people too despite the seemingly little chance of making a difference.
** In later chapters, when the other users worry about Izuku relentlessly pushing forward, Kudo is the only one who disagrees, remarking that Izuku has chosen the right path. However, he too agrees that the ninth user needs help.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: He has a nasty scar running across his face from the left side of his forehead, across his nose, and down below his right eye. This appears to be a wound All For One inflicted in the process of killing him, as Kudou didn't have it when he first met Yoichi, nor when All For One had him gripped by the neck.
* HourOfPower: His Quirk can remain active without interruption for five minutes, but if that time limit hits, it leaves the user exhausted.
* IdenticalStranger: He bears an uncanny resemblance to Bakugo, right down to having similar costume designs, spiky ShonenHair and TsurimeEyes. All For One even starts panicking when he realizes how similar Bakugo looks to him.
* InertiaIsACruelMistress: {{Averted}} outright, thanks to his quirk's inbuilt RequiredSecondaryPowers. Gearshift enabled him to negate the inertia of whatever he fired whilst retaining its forward momentum, enabling him to inflict delayed attacks in a fight from bullets he fired slowing to a crawl mid-air at 'low gear' before rocketing up to super-fast at 'high gear' when in his enemies' blindspots. When the same effect is applied to Izuku, it means his new SuperSpeed levels can instantly slow down mid-movement as needed to avoid foes predicting his trajectory to counter-attack him, aided with [[SpiderSense Danger Sense]] predicting when to adjust his speed as needed.
* ItBeganWithATwistOfFate: It's discussed that One For All would've likely completely died if he ignored Yoichi's prison or had killed him because of his relation to All For One.
* ItsPersonal: For some reason, All For One displayed [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness atypical animosity]] and [[TranquilFury icy fury]] towards him in their fatal clash, not even bothering with his usual [[{{Troll}} snide taunting]] and brutally killing him with [[BerserkerTears streaks of tears]] on his face, despite the story making a large plot point about how [[TheSociopath unemotional and unempathic]] All For One is. It's revealed this is due to the Second being the immediate successor after [[MoralityPet Yoichi]] and All For One being enraged by his brother's passing, though processed as him forever losing [[ItsAllAboutMe a valuable possession]]. Years later, this same uncharacteristic anger surfaces in All For One's vestige when Bakugo reminds him of him, showcasing that his anger towards the Second has not abated despite all the time that passed since his demise. In fact, he's so enraged towards Kudo that he states that he hates him ''more'' than [[ArchEnemy All Might]].
* NeckSnap: All For One apparently killed him this way, hoisting him aloft via NeckLift before an image of the same [[SnowMeansDeath snowy wilderness]] that symbolised All Might's dying embers is seen.
* NoNameGiven: Along with the third user, his name has not yet been given despite an adequate amount of screen time. He ends up with the most behind Yoichi and Nana too, making it especially odd. His family name is ''finally'' revealed at the end of Chapter 406 by a raging All For One.
* PetTheDog: Despite originally attacking All For One's headquarters in the distant past with the intent on taking down anyone important to his enemy when the Second Wielder saw Yoichi in captivity, he reached out a helping hand and rescued him despite knowing of his ties to All For One. Yoichi even states that this simple act of kindness was when One For All was truly born.
* PragmaticHero: While undoubtedly a good person, he looks down on Midoriya's goal of saving Shigaraki, considering the boy foolishly soft-hearted.
* RebelLeader: He was the initial leader of the organization dedicated to All For One's downfall and initially came across an imprisoned Yoichi during a raid on the villain's headquarters.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: It was his choice to save Yoichi from his prison, and ultimately to accept One For All as the first inheritor, that truly allowed the Quirk the chance to reach its full potential. All For One is well aware of this, which is why he has [[ThisIsUnforgivable nothing but utter seething animosity]] towards Kudo and anything that reminds him of the Rebel Leader.
* SuperSpeed: His Quirk, Gearshift, enables the user to alter the speed of whatever they're touching by several levels (referred to as gears akin to a car), such as Midoriya using it on himself to travel faster than the speed of sound, compounded with the decades of power it has attained.
* TargetedToHurtTheHero: He actually {{Inverted|Trope}} this for once against All For One, given his propensity for pulling this against his enemies' family members. The latter comments that he killed every woman and child Kudo was ever close to to absolutely eliminate any HeroicLineage that Kudo might have left, but it's hinted this occurred after his death, as an act of absolute spite towards his memory. Instead, Kudo's last words were throwing the fact that All For One directly killed Yoichi, [[KinslayingIsASpecialKindOfEvil an act that managed to emotionally effect him]] despite his absolute denial of it, right into his face, causing him to shed BerserkerTears in rage over being reminded of what he did. This affected him so badly, it's implied that the reason Kudo is now his BerserkButton is that he's reminded of his last words and Yoichi's death by proxy every time he thinks of him.
* TooAwesomeToUse: He warns Deku his Quirk should only be used as a last resort, since after melding with One For All it has become a very useful but also a very dangerous ability. "A power beyond what he was capable of accomplishing with it when he was alive, and now beyond anyone's control." Chapter 369 reveals that it originally only worked on small objects, such as bullets, but the decades it spent stewing in One For All's power stockpile let it grow strong enough to affect more objects and even work on a cellular level. This enables Izuku to apply its speed enhancements to himself, a LightningBruiser already in the running to become the WorldsStrongestMan, enabling his enhanced velocity to augment his already-impressive speed and strength to practically achieve a SuperMode of ''120%'' attacks, and can 'warp the very laws governing reality'. However, this immense boost comes with both a time limit of 5 minutes and an unspoken cost to activate, meaning using it becomes an all-or-nothing gamble for Izuku's victory. Chapter 377 reveals the cost: extended use without proper rest starts inducing oxygen deprivation.
* TookALevelInIdealism: When introduced Kudo is notable in being the most cynical of all the past One For All users believing that Midoriya's desire to save Shigaraki is a fool's errand and that he is not an ideal vessel to finish the battle with All For One. Even his partner Bruce is more willing to lend his aide to Midoriya then Kudo is. However, after seeing Midoriya's struggles and understanding how he sees a human heart even in the most irredeemable people it causes Kudo to want to believe in Midoriya too even if he doesn't think that Shigaraki can be saved. This culminates with his HeroicSacrifice by suggesting the plan to attack Shigaraki's mental scar at the cost of his destruction betting everything on Midoriya to win the day.
-->'''Kudo:''' The desire to saves ones ArchEnemy is delusional madness. A madness that disrupts our destined path. It's arroant thinking born of a naive, peace-addled existence. But having observed from within ... I know the truth. That this boy ... clings to one notion. That anyone, whether the most vile among us ... or even the Quirkless. That inside of each one of us... beats an innately human heart. I, too ... want to believe.

Shinomori's predecessor. He was a comrade of Kudo and they saved Yoichi from All For One. His Quirk is Fa Jin, which stores up kinetic energy through repeated motions before releasing it in bursts.
----
* AloofAlly: Like Kudo, he looks down on the rest of the One For All holders and [[GoodIsNotNice views their kindheartedness as weakness]].
* BadassesWearBandanas: The Third User wears a bandana and is one of the two most aggressive and violent holders of One For All.
* ChargedAttack: His Quirk, Fa Jin, stores and releases kinetic energy in different parts of the body, which can be used for attack via directly striking a foe or defense by using the burst as a movement boost. It's basically a much faster yet weaker and temporary (and safer) version of One For All's own stockpiling effect, complete with the ability to store and release separate explosions of energy from different limbs.
* TheCynic: Neither he nor his comrade, would initially acknowledge Midoriya as [[AllLovingHero the Ninth torchbearer]], as he put it, they both came from an era of chaos where society was collapsing and All For One was virtually about to take over the world and plunge it into eternal lawlessness.
* DefrostingIceKing: His initial interaction with Izuku is to ignore him, but after seeing his determination, which is almost self-destructive, he eases up on his successor and grants him access to Fa Jin.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Despite coming off as just as callous and dismissive of Midoriya as Kudo, he seems to agree with the other holders that Midoriya is pushing himself too far and even questions the second holder's words that Midoriya is on the right path despite running himself ragged.
* ExoticEyeDesigns: The glimpse of his face seen in chapter 310 reveals that his eyes have slit pupils and no visible irises.
* HadToBeSharp: Bruce implies that his more pragmatic approach comes from the high stakes the rebellion faced when fighting All For One. Given that the image of his death implied he stepped up as the leader of their Rebel movement in the aftermath of Kudo's death, it's given further context as to why he feels this way, especially since his own efforts couldn't do anything to halt All For One's vengeful rampage.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: All For One killed him this way, apparently using the Spearlike Bones Quirk he stole from his mother.
* LastStand: He apparently died doing this along with the rest of Kudo's rebel movement when All For One came for them next in search of One For All (and also further petty vengeance against Kudo's memory). He's shown to be [[ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice impaled in the gut]] by the arch-villain standing amidst the bodies of his deceased comrades, though he was apparently [[DoNotGoGentle the last to go down fighting]]. Given Shinomori's tactics of hiding from All For One, it's further implied the battle was to by time for Bruce's successor to successfully escape and evade All For One's manic searching for his brother's essence.
* NoNameGiven: Despite having an adequate amount of screen time, his name isn't revealed until Chapter 408.
* NumberTwo: He's implied to have been this to Kudo, being both his successor and his only companion during the rescue of Yoichi.
* RedIsHeroic: In the anime, both his Vestige aura as well as Fa Jin when is being charged up shine in a bright red color.
* SuddenlySpeaking: He's the first to break the silence as Yoichi keeps imploring his leader and he, to help Deku.

[[caption-width-right:350:''"As of now, One For All cannot be wielded by an ordinary person."'']]

The fourth wielder of "One For All", a tall, muscular man with a large scar on his face. Shinomori cultivated One For All for eighteen years before dying at the age of 40, although he transferred it to Lariat before his demise. His original Quirk, "Danger Sense" gives him the ability to sense when his or a nearby person's life is in imminent danger.
----
* BadassLongRobe: In life, he wore long robes with a hood, appropriate considering he was TheHermit.
* FashionableAsymmetry: Has two long scars over the left side of his face, and wears a long-sleeved coat with the right sleeve torn off.
* FlingALightIntoTheFuture: Even more so than the other wielders. Hikage knew he had no chance against All For One, with it being hinted he barely escaped from him thanks to Bruce's fatal LastStand. So he spent the 18 years he had the Quirk training in order to strengthen it to give his successors a fighting chance.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** Midoriya recognizes this Quirk after recovering from Dabi's attack, but Danger Sense had begun to awaken when Midoriya fought Shigaraki midair, shortly after the former awakened Float.
** Chapter 257 shows a collage of various One For All predecessors passing on the power to their successors. While Banjo and En are both shown to be bloodied messes as they passed the Quirk on, indicating they did so shortly after/before their fatal battles with All For One. Meanwhile, Shinomori is shown to weakened but unharmed physically, an early hint that he was not killed by All For One like the others and instead died of different circumstances.
* FourIsDeath: Is the fourth user of One For All, had a Quirk that warned him of life-threatening danger, and he died at the age of 40 due to old age, rather than in battle like other wielders. Additionally, the circumstance of his death is an essential clue to the revelation of One For All being potentially lethal [[RapidAging by draining the lifespan]] of wielders who already have Quirks.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: He has a large scar over his left eye. This was because of holding One For All for a long time.
* TheHermit: Since he was no match for All For One, Shinomori retreated to a forest and lived there for 18 years, cultivating One For All. He is the only One For All user who was not killed by All For One. Daigoro teases him about this, calling him a weirdo.
* LogicalWeakness: His Quirk, "Danger Sense" cannot activate if he's being attacked by someone who isn't aiming to kill him.
* MeaningfulName: His family name contains the character for "four" (''shino'') and "forest" (''mori'') while his name means "to evade" (''hi'') and "shadow" (''kage'') referencing both his position as the fourth holder of One For All, and the fact he became a hermit in the forest.
* MrExposition: Shinomori explains the reasons why One For All can no longer be passed anymore, and why Izuku is the final user of One For All.
* NoBrows: His eyebrows are completely devoid of hair.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Assuming his spirit matches his last appearance when he was alive, then he was a rather youthful-looking 40-year-old; large scar aside, he could easily pass for about 15 years younger. All the more ironic and jarring that he died at 40 from RapidAging.
* RapidAging: Shinomori died at the age of 40, not because [[BigBad All For One]] found him, but because One For All [[CastFromLifespan drained his life force]].
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Though he didn't live a terribly notable life as a hero like some of the other One For All users, Hikage is actually the individual most responsible for building up the massive levels of SuperStrength that allowed All Might to eventually beat All For One, as the 18 years he spent stockpiling power did more to strengthen the quirk than any of the other users could do before All For One killed them. His early death also provided the Torch Bearers knowledge about One For All's deadly side-effect.
* SpiderSense: His Quirk, [[MySignificanceSenseIsTingling Danger Sense]], warns him if he or someone else's life [[ImminentDangerClue is in imminent danger]]. The sensation is painful and numbs the other senses. For [[RuleOfEmpathy someone like Midoriya]] who has inherited this power, it's a heavy cross to bear indeed. Not to mention that Danger Sense has been amplified by One For All. Shinomori demonstrates this Quirk by casually dodging Lariat's Blackwhip.
* SuperStrength: He's the first confirmed user to have manifested at least some degree of One For All's signature power, as he's shown to have been capable of splitting a man-sized boulder in two with his bare hands.
* UnPerson: Downplayed, All Might scratched out his cause of death, dying of old age at 40, as All Might wasn't so sure about it and didn't want to worry Izuku.
* TheWonka: Banjo calls him a weirdo who became a hermit, prompting Hikage to respond by saying everybody else is weird and he's the only one who's not.

The fifth wielder of "One For All", a past hero known as Lariat in his time. He's a bit on the aggressive side and is the second user to directly talk to Midoriya as a vestige. His original Quirk, "Blackwhip", can create dark tendrils for restraining and movement purposes.
----
* BadassBandolier: Part of his outfit, though the vestige that speaks to Midoriya doesn't appear to have any sort of firearm.
* BoisterousBruiser: Midoriya compares his aura to that of All Might, and he's pretty HotBlooded when we first see him.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: PlayedForLaughs. [[Creator/KoheiHorikoshi Horikoshi]] describes Daigoro as a "super funky" guy. He uses punk lingo, dresses in a leather jacket, stylish goggles, and a bandolier, and is also one of Midoriya's predecessors. While Shinomori is having a serious discussion with Izuku, Daigoro starts teasing his predecessor and chases him with Blackwhip.
* CombatTentacles: His Quirk, Blackwhip, lets him manipulate tendrils of darkness to grab his enemies and maneuver mid-air.
* CrypticallyUnhelpfulAnswer: Daigoro's first piece of advice to Midoriya, while obviously well-meaning, is basically just "you're doing it wrong" without any actual advice on how to improve. He later explains that Midoriya must first control his emotions before wielding his powers.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Dresses in dark clothes and has a [[CastingAShadow darkness-themed Quirk]] but, he was actually a Pro Hero and a One For All user.
* GogglesDoNothing: Wears a pair of goggles over his head, but they didn't seem to have been used at all during his time as a hero, at least from the little we've seen of it.
* HeroicBuild: Daigoro has a masculine build.
* HotBlooded: He starts yelling at Izuku to pull himself together when the latter accidentally activates Blackwhip. He calms down quickly and starts explaining the situation to the boy.
* LanternJawOfJustice: Banjo has a very prominent, jutting chin and was a pro hero in his time.
* LargeHam: He's quite campy and over-the-top in his mannerisms, which Midoriya likens to All Might.
* MeaningfulName:
** As is the pattern for all named torchbearers, Daigoro's name contains the number he represents in the One For All lineage, "go" being "five"
** His hero name, "Lariat", is one referring to his Quirk, since a lariat is a rope in the form of a lasso.
* MrExposition: Chapter 213 where he explains to Midoriya what is actually going on with One For All. He then reveals to Midoriya that the latter has six Quirks aside from One For All, which were added by the previous users between the original and All Might.
* NoBrows: Just like his predecessor, Shinomori.
* NoNameGiven: He doesn't bother to introduce himself since he barely had any time to talk at all. All Might later reveals his name to be Daigoro Banjo, the fifth wielder of One For All.
* PersonalityPowers: His Quirk, "Blackwhip", is meant to be used for restraint purposes, at the same time, it requires the user to have restraint over his own emotions, which he explains to Midoriya.
* ThePowerOfHate: Played with. Daigoro acknowledges rage as a valid source of power, but only if it is controlled.
* SpiritAdvisor: Shouts at Midoriya to pull himself together and try harder. He also advises Midoriya to control his emotions while using Quirks.
* TheStoic: Not a straight example himself, but he does stress the importance of controlling one's emotions, especially anger when handling Quirks.
* SuperEmpowering: His Quirk, Blackwhip, is the first power (after One For All) to manifest within Midoriya.
* UnexplainedAccent: It's never revealed where he's from, but Daigoro's Okinawan accent serves as a good indicator.
* WhamLine: He has two:
--> (''To Midoriya'') As for that power that just exploded outta you, that's my Quirk.\
(''To Midoriya'') Get ready kiddo, 'cause you're about to get all six of our Quirks.
* YouRemindMeOfX: Midoriya believes Daigoro has the same "aura" and "tone" as All Might.

The sixth wielder of "One For All", Daigoro's colleague and Nana Shimura's predecessor. He dresses with an extremely high collar similar to that of Best Jeanist. His original Quirk, "Smokescreen", produces thick smoke layers.
----
* AnArmAndALeg: He lost his right arm in his final battle against All For One.
* CallForward: He transferred One For All to Nana by giving her a lock of his hair. Nana's successor, All Might also transferred One For All to Midoriya by giving him a strand of his hair.
* CowardlyLion: Likely due to his younger age and particularly traumatic death, En is the most visibly shaken and fearful of [[PersonOfMassDestruction Shigaraki]] at the series' climax. He was still chosen as a One For All successor and the others treat him as an equal, so considering that and Shigaraki becoming bar none the most dangerous villain in the story, it's understandable why he's so scared. He also readily volunteers to sacrifice himself first when Kudo proposes a plan to throw all the vestiges at Shigaraki's inner vestige world to open up a weakness Izuku can exploit.
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: All For One brutally kills him this way, bisecting him from behind.
* ManlyTears: His final moments show him crying as he transfers One For All to Nana by giving her a lock of his hair.
* MeaningfulName: En is written with the kanji for smoke (煙), referring to his [[SmokeOut Quirk]]
* PurpleIsPowerful: In the anime, both his Vestige aura as well as Smokescreen are shown in a shade of purple.
* SmokeOut: His Quirk produces a smoke cover that obscures the vision. It's not meant for straight combat, but it works wonders for sneaking around.
* SupportPartyMember: Unlike the previously revealed One For All Quirks (Black Whip, Float, Danger Sense), the ability to produce a smoke cover doesn't lend itself much to direct combat or provide a physical advantage. Where it shines is by providing distractions and limiting enemy vision and movement.

All Might's master and the seventh wielder of One For All. She died many years ago in battle against All For One, but not before passing her Quirk to All Might first. It's revealed late into the story that she also possessed the Quirk "Float," which allows her to maintain her elevation in the air at will without falling.
----
* AchievementsInIgnorance: At that time, she didn't know that choosing Toshinori as her successor would not only bring someone who would be able to empower One For All enough to defeat All For One, but also avoid the RapidAging problem that none of the Torchbearers knew about.
* ActionGirl: Qualifies as this since she was a heroine and All Might's master. She died fighting All For One.
* AdaptationExpansion: The anime expands upon her personality and influence on All Might. It also isn't shy about showing a direct view of her face, while in the manga, Nana's often depicted from an indirect view to emphasize her from a distanced perspective and remind us that her time has passed and she's a lingering memory.
* AllForNothing: After her husband was killed by a villain, she put her son, Kotaro, into foster care to keep him from harm and forbade All Might and Gran Torino from making contact with him. However, [[LockedOutOfTheLoop because he never understood the full truth behind what she did]], Kotaro soon grew up to be an abusive, hero-hating father and had a son named Tenko who would later become Tomura Shigaraki. Furthermore, Kotaro is murdered by his son [[TheDogBitesBack when the latter's Quirk first activated due to the former's abuse]]. Even further than that, she did all that so that she can better fight All For One, only for her grandson to become a tool for All For One to get One For All. [[FromBadToWorse To put things further]], all her efforts only resulted in [[spoiler:Kotaro being manipulated by [[EpicFail All For One himself]] into becoming a hateful adult and him stealing Tenko's original Quirk and giving him Decay instead, meaning Nana's efforts to protect Kotaro from her ArchEnemy just resulted in said ArchEnemy indirectly killing her entire extended family to fulfill his goals for immortality.]]
* AmazonianBeauty: She's tall, muscular, and wielded tremendous SuperStrength as a holder of One For All. Midoriya calls her gorgeous after meeting her in a vision. All Might agrees.
* AnArmAndALeg: It's unknown if she was still alive when it happened, but All For One amputated at least one of her hands at some point and had it embalmed, eventually giving it to Tomura as a "gift". All For One seems fond of causing these gruesome injuries, as her predecessor En was also shown missing a whole arm during his last fight with the former.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: After Izuku learns that he might be the final wielder of One For All, Nana asks him this:
-->'''Nana''': Now Izuku... tell me. [[WhamLine Can you kill Tomura Shigaraki?]]
* BadassCape: Much like All Might after her, she wears one and was presumably very powerful as a wielder of One For All.
* BigDamnHeroes: She and Yoichi arrive to help Midoriya in the world of souls when the latter struggles against All For One/Tomura Shigaraki.
* BrokenBird: Nana endured so much tragedy, by the time Izuku speaks to her, she is too depressed to smile anymore. She starts [[TenderTears crying]] when Izuku affirms his resolve.
* TheBusCameBack: In Chapter 192, she appears in Midoriya's dream, along with the previous One For All users. This is also the first time in the manga that Nana's face isn't obscured by bangs. She is later seen doing a blessing gesture towards Midoriya, along with the other users.
* CheapCostume: Her "hero costume", if you can call it that, consists of a cape, gloves, a sleeveless bodysuit, and boots.
* TheChooserOfTheOne: Unlike her predecessors who passed on One For All in their dying moments to their nearest companion, Nana actually chose her successor, trained him, and had already passed the quirk on well before her death.
* ComboPlatterPowers: Nana possessed a Quirk named [[NotQuiteFlight Float]], before obtaining One For All. Midoriya inherited that Quirk as well.
* DaddyHadAGoodReasonForAbandoningYou: Nana wanted to protect Kotaro from [[BigBad All For One]] and so she sent him to foster care. It was a failure because either way, [[ManipulativeBastard All For One]] would have come after her family. Abandoning Kotaro merely gave him extra ammunition in the form of Kotaro's son, who grew up to be Tomura Shigaraki.
* DadsCantCook: A mother example. Chapter 235 reveals that Nana couldn't cook, and Kotaro would even score the food whenever she fed him, giving it 6/10.
* DefiantToTheEnd: Appropriate considering she was All Might's mentor, the last image we see of Nana before she was killed was her cockily smiling at All For One and telling him that he would never defeat Yagi, as her apprentice's determination was even crazier than the villains.
* DisappointedInYou: Upon seeing the monster her grandson has become, due to Kotaro's own terrible parenting, Nana, knowing how much of a terrible person her son became because of her decision, was notably disappointed in the man her son turned out to be.
* DoNotGoGentle: If ''All Might Rising'' is anything to go by, Nana did not go down without a fight, given that All For One resorted to titanic attacks that could be seen from a huge distance.
* DreamingOfTimesGoneBy: Nana had a weird dream where the silhouette of one of the predecessors gave her a cryptic message. Her successor All Might did not experience anything like that, but All Might's [[Characters/MyHeroAcademiaIzukuMidoriya successor manifested that ability on an unprecedented level.]]
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: When meeting her in the vestige world of One For All, Nana's eyes have this appearance after witnessing what became of her son Kotaro and her grandson Tenko after giving Kotaro away for his own safety.
* EyesOutOfSight: Only in the manga where her hair hides much of her face. From chapter 192 onwards, her face is shown clearly.
* FamilyThemeNaming: Nana and her IdenticalGranddaughter, Hana, have names that end with "ana".
* FlyingBrick: She was most likely this, as a combination of her original Quirk and One For All's SuperStrength.
* GoodIsNotSoft: She's willing to suggest that Izuku kill Tomura Shigaraki, her own grandson, because she knows that despite being pained and tormented by All For One, he doesn't seek repentance, nor will he want to be reasoned with.
* GoodParents: Kotaro's flashbacks clearly showed Nana to be a kind and caring mother who simply just wanted to protect him from her dangerous career.
* HiddenEyes: In the manga, her eyes are always hidden, or seen closed when viewed directly. This is averted in the anime and in Midoriya's One For All dream in Chapter 192.
* HistoryRepeats: In a retroactive example, ''All Might Rising'', which was released with ''Anime/MyHeroAcademiaTwoHeroes'', reveals that she fought All For One with the last embers of One For All to defend her pupil, just as All Might would do for Midoriya years later. The difference is that Nana died, whereas All Might won, even though he lost his powers in the process.
* IHaveNoSon: PlayedForDrama. After putting Kotaro away for foster care and [[{{Unperson}} erasing all traces of her relation to him in the family registry]] to prevent All For One from finding him, she tries to tell Sorahiko that she never once had a child but ultimately [[TearsOfRemorse cries in anguish]].
* ItsAllMyFault: She blames herself for how her grandson turned out, acknowledging her decision to put her son up for adoption was the worst decision of her life. It is downplayed, as while she does take responsibility for her actions, she does not bear the full guilt in how Shigaraki turned out. Her son was an abusive bastard towards Tenko solely because of him being too bitter to move on from his childhood of her putting him up for adoption, making him the main cause of how her grandson turned into the monster he is now.
* LikeASonToMe: Inverted. She and Toshinori were so close that he considered her to be like a mother to him and he grieves her death to the present day.
* LukeIAmYourFather: She is Tomura Shigaraki's grandmother, though TheReveal is not done between the family members themselves, but rather the two people closely related to them, All Might and All For One.
* MeaningfulName:
** Much in the same vein of Izuku and Toshinori, her name contains the number she represents in the One For All lineage, being that Nana means "Seven".
** In some languages, "Nana" is an informal word for "grandmother". Her grandson Tomura Shigaraki is one of the most important characters in the story.
* MentorArchetype: One toward All Might, at least before her death. She was the one who decided to carefully train and groom her prospective successor instead of transferring One For All in her final moments to a random teammate.
* MentorOccupationalHazard: She perishes at the hands of All For One prior to the events of the story, back when All Might was 18.
* MissingMom: To her son, Kotaro. After his father was killed by a villain, Nana had him placed in foster care. This act had led him to hate her for most of his life.
* AMotherToHerMen: Nana took it upon herself to train the Quirkless Toshinori, and believed in his ideal to become the Symbol Of Peace. Toshinori regarded her as his own mother and mourned her death.
* MyGreatestFailure: In her eyes, Tomura Shigaraki is the result of the biggest mistake of her life: abandoning Kotaro for his own safety, which resulted in him becoming a hero-hating abusive father and one of the reasons her grandson became a monster.
* NotQuiteDead: Like other previous users, her consciousness is embedded in One For All. Nana first theorized this and had explained it to a teenage All Might, believing that all One For All users remains together. This becomes true when Midoriya is able to meet the past One For All users.
* NotQuiteFlight: Her Quirk, Float is this. It is eerily similar to All For One's Air Walk Quirk.
* ParentalAbandonment: She left her son Kotaro when he was still just a young boy shortly after her husband was killed by a villain. This left Kotaro to have deep-rooted issues around her, which caused a great deal of harm to his own parenting to his children, especially towards Tenko/Shigaraki.
* ParentalSubstitute: All Might thought of her as his own mother.
* ParentsAsPeople: Nana loved Kotaro so much so (to the point she broke down in tears after giving him up), but the death of his father and the dangers of All For One had caused her to leave Kotaro in foster care for his own safety. She did leave Kotaro a letter of her saying her reason for leaving and her love for him, and that she'll always watch him in Heaven. Kotaro even says that how it would have been better if Nana had hated him instead.
* PerpetualFrowner: Upon meeting Izuku in the One For All world, Nana has lost her fire and can do nothing but look depressed and sullen knowing the fate of her grandson and having to ask Izuku to kill him.
* PoorCommunicationKills: She never bothered to mention to All Might that the vestiges were talking to her and saying cryptic things. As a result, All Might is completely unprepared when they start reaching out to Midoriya and causing his Quirk to go haywire. The same applies to her son, as rather than properly tell him why she put him up for adoption, he grew up thinking she chose her job over her family resulting in him becoming a bitter and cold man to his own family.
* PrecursorHero: She was the previous user of One For All, and was All Might's mentor.
* ProperlyParanoid: She gave up her own son Kotaro in order to protect him from All For One, but he grew up resenting his mother for abandoning him. However, her fears were completely justified and her actions, in fact, weren't even enough since All For One eventually did find her family anyway and molded her grandson into a weapon against the later wielders of One For All.
* PurpleIsPowerful: When powering up One For All, Nana's streak is purple, to All Might's yellow and Midoriya's green. It can also be assumed that like them, she had purple lightning when she powered herself up.
* RavenHairIvorySkin: Had dark hair and pale skin.
* SamusIsAGirl: Midoriya even referred to her as a "he" when asking Gran Torino about All Might's predecessor. This clued Gran Torino in that All Might was telling Midoriya almost nothing about his past and Quirk.
* SevenIsNana: Naturally, the seventh user of One For All is named Nana.
* SleevesAreForWimps: Her hero costume notably lacks sleeves.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: Nana is the only woman to have held One For All.
* StatuesqueStunner: While her height hasn't been officially revealed, she's about a head taller than Izuku and En.
* StepfordSmiler: A {{subver|tedTrope}}sion. Nana believes that a hero should smile at all times to give hope to those who they are saving and must always say that everything is ok. This is something All Might took to heart, thanks to her. After learning what All For One did to her grandson, she is too dejected to smile anymore.
* SuperStrength: She had this as a wielder of One For All, although she wasn't strong enough to defeat All For One.
* TargetedToHurtTheHero: Nana Shimura's husband was murdered by [[BigBad All For One]] to spite her, the seventh holder of One For All, for opposing him. This is what convinces her to give her child Kotaro up for adoption while forbidding both All Might and Gran Torino from learning anything about him to keep Kotaro out of All For One's clutches. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, this backfired horribly in the long-term, as Kotaro became physically and emotionally abusive to his own family as a result of his ParentalAbandonment, creating the conditions that would turn her grandson into Tomura Shigaraki.]]
* TokenFlyer: Of all the users of One For All she is the only one with a Quirk based on flight.
* TragicHero: Nana's life was a long series of tragedies. She inherited One For All while watching all her comrades murdered by All For One. Her husband was killed on the job and she decided to part ways with her young son to ensure his safety (which ended up being one of the worst decisions ever made). She died fighting a hopeless battle against All For One. After death, she was reviled by her son for abandoning him, which itself played a role in the demise of the Shimura family. As an insult to her memory, All For One took her little grandson and groomed him to become one of the most dangerous villains of all time. And how does Tomura react to seeing her in the One For All? He tells her he hates her for everything that's happened to him. Afterwards, Nana is so upset she suggests for Izuku to kill her grandson.
* TraumaCongaLine: After her husband was killed, Nana had to give up her son, Kotaro, to foster care out of fear he'll be next. Unfortunately, Kotaro ended up becoming a horrible man and harshly abused her grandchildren. Her grandson then ''snaps'', kills his whole family, is manipulated into becoming a villain by the same man who killed her, and ends up severely injuring her best friend.
* UndignifiedDeath: All For One claims that her death at his hand was utterly shameful, but All Might shut him up before he can elaborate. Given [[EvilCannotComprehendGood his way of thinking]] though, it's probable that he alone would hold that opinion. From what we see of her final moments she went down swinging and promised All For One with a smile on her face that All Might would defeat him, so it's implied that All For One found her defiance against the "demon lord" to be shameful.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Nana put Kotaro into foster care to protect him from her hero career and All For One. Unfortunately, it had several ramifications over the years, with Kotaro despising her for her action and taking his anger out on his children. [[BigBad All For One]] gleefully exploited the situation when he became the mentor of Kotaro's son, who grew up to be Tomura Shigaraki. Someday, Midoriya, who also happens to be one of Nana's successors, must battle Shigaraki, and Shigaraki ultimately ends up maiming Nana's close friend Gran Torino (who himself realizes just how bad of a mistake Nana made before he passes out).
* YouRemindMeOfX: Though it's a bit hard to tell because of the art style, All Might mention that she looks a lot like Inko Midoriya. Especially her hair. After meeting Nana himself, Midoriya agrees with this.

Better known by his hero name, All Might. The eighth holder of One For All and Japan's most powerful Hero. He received One For All from Nana Shimura and, after forty years of cultivation, he transferred it to Izuku Midoriya and trained him. He has retired after using up the last embers of One For All in him to defeat All For One. Unknowingly however, he had created a vestige duplicate of himself while posessing One For All, which provides the Torch Bearers a second source to the world of the living.
