Aside from the numerous characters from [[MegaCrossover many different series]] provided by the players, Mayfield has a small cast of named characters of its own. Here's the lineup and the tropes they embody.

----
[[foldercontrol]]
----
[[folder: '''Civil Servants''']]
----

:'''Mayor John Doe'''

-->''"Play your cards right, and you just might end up living here forever. Don't, and... well... I wouldn't bother unpacking your things, if you know what I mean."''

On the surface, he's the one who's running the show, dedicated to his mission to make Mayfield the happiest little town in America. Under the surface, though, he's a highly paranoid, cowardly, and and obsessive psychopath, committed to exterminating "immoral behavior" and forcing the captives into compliance. For most of Mayfield's run, he worked at his office at City Hall and was rarely seen outside of it.

!!!Tropes associated with Mayor John Doe:

* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Subverted. Like the others controlling Mayfield, he has phenomenal powers, but he's not the most dangerous of them all. He's also not the actual leader.
%%* DecoyLeader
* TheDragon: To Lucy Smith.
* {{Expy}}: Looks an awful lot like Dr. Phil...
* FauxAffablyEvil: In Mayfield's earliest days, the Mayor put on a warm, folksy personality when dealing with the captives. As time went on, though, he dropped the facade, revealing his more {{Jerkass}} mindset.
* GivenNameReveal: His real name is William [=MacReady=].
* KilledOffForReal: By Zemekis when he awoke during the final event of the game.
* KickTheDog: Several cases of it--
** [[http://mayfield-mods.livejournal.com/34831.html In a private conversation during September 2010]], he wanted Grady to record the deaths of everyone he killed in Maipole, and to make them squirm before they died.
** Later during Thanksgiving 2011, he tried to bargain with [[spoiler: John Zemekis]] not to unleash a recreation of nuclear war on Mayfield's captors by offering to torture all of the children, just so that people would admit that they enjoy living in Mayfield.
%%* ObstructiveBureaucrat
* PermanentElectedOfficial: Except for the November 2009 event "Democracy," when the Milkman got voted in.
* PunchClockVillain: It was hinted at throughout Mayfield's run, but toward the end of it, it was confirmed that the Mayor and all the others with power in Mayfield were just other captives.
* SmugSnake: He had his oily moments, especially whenever he was confident that the captives had been "trained" to be obedient.
* ThickerThanWater: He's revealed himself to be Jack Smith's real father in conversations with him.
* UltimateAuthorityMayor: He does have a lot of hands-on control of Mayfield, but so do many of his colleagues.

----

:'''Police Chief Grady'''

-->''"Ta all ye new folks, I extend me personal welcome. The name's Grady, and I be the law hereabouts--hoho, listen ta me, big ol' important boyo! When all's said and done, I shouldn't hafta see ya outside o' the occasional smile an' wave. You don't cause trouble fer me an' I don't cause trouble for ''you''. Ye understand."''

The Mayor's right-hand man, an aged, simple Irish-born beer-loving police officer. He's the one responsible for finding the "ne'er-do-wells" of the town and subjecting them to droning--er, "obedience training." He demonstrated the power to immediately brainwash anyone nearby with just a thought.

!!!Tropes associated with Police Chief Grady:

* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Proved to be much more violent and eager to resort to violence than the Mayor.
* BadBoss: For captives made police officers, Grady wasn't kind to his own men.
%%* TheBrute
* CruelToBeKind: This was an early philosophy he espoused to the Mayor, but judging from his treatment of others, it may have just been an excuse to be cruel.
-->'''Grady:''' "We need to break them. Now. If they won't take paradise, we'll give them hell instead and see how they like it."
** Confirmed by [[spoiler: Zemekis]] in the final days, who said that [[http://mayfield-mods.dreamwidth.org/94198.html?thread=5683702#cmt5683702 Grady openly welcomed acting like a villain]] out of self-loathing.
* TheDragon: To the Mayor, initially.
* DragonWithAnAgenda: According to [[spoiler: Zemekis]] near the end of the game, many of the crueler events inflicted upon the populace were not ordered by him, but on the initiatives of others--particularly Grady.
* FaceHeelTurn: In Westport during May 2010, it was revealed that Evan was originally part of Richard Grey's resistance and was [[http://westport-rpg.livejournal.com/2635.html?thread=2167627#t2167627 actively fighting]] Mayfield's Mayor and Zemekis, [[http://westport-rpg.livejournal.com/2387.html?thread=1883987#t1883987 though they were losing]]. He eventually betrayed Richard, joined Zemekis, and became Grady.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Grady's role is supposed to be that of a friendly Irish-American police officer, as time went on, he didn't bother with either the accent ''or'' the friendliness.
* GivenNameReveal: His real name is Evan Olney.
* HatesEveryoneEqually: Except for a few certain individuals.
%%* {{Jerkass}}
* KilledOffForReal: In the wake of the Summer 2011 event "Speak Up," in retaliation for {{Mercy Kill}}ing Jane Smith, using the powers he was given by the Mayor to exterminate Maipole.
* KillerCop: As time went on, he began to freely abuse his powers to force compliance or to kill disobedient captives slowly and painfully.
* OfficerOHara: That accent!
* PoliceBrutality: Oh so very much. In fact, the Mayor once told Jack Smith that Grady liked abusing the captives as stress relief.
* PunchClockVillain: As much as he despised everyone who was brought to Mayfield, he didn't seem to think all torture was worth it.
* VillainTeleportation: He could appear out of nowhere to deal with troublemakers, and also teleport people with him.

----

:'''The Milkman'''

-->''"I'm going to ''curdle'' your flesh right on your bones, you lactose intolerant!"''

Silent and single-minded but cheerful and hard-working, he replaced the original drone milkman during the "[[http://mayfield-rpg.livejournal.com/48326.html Morning Deliveries]]" event of June 2009, after the Mayor and Officer Grady decided [[http://mayfield-mods.livejournal.com/2909.html#cutid1 Mayfield's captives needed to be taught a lesson]]. He's not really under their control, though. He quickly became infamous for spiking delivered bottles of milk with poison, spiders, razor blades or glass--initially only a tenth of the bottles were delivered this way, but he eventually wound up doing it to ''everything'' he delivered.

!!!Tropes associated with the Milkman:

* AxCrazy: As is anyone who is droned by him, such as when he had a brief stint as the chief of police during the "Cream of the Cop" event in August 2011.
* BlackBeadEyes: Described as having such.
* FauxAffablyEvil: In his very first appearance, he's described almost as a Posessive-type {{Yandere}} with a CargoShip for the whole of Mayfield and everyone in it.
* FightingAShadow: The Postman calls him by the same name as the real identity of Lucy Smith: [[spoiler: John Zemekis]]. Before Evan Olney died, he mentioned that the Milkman is a "creation" of the BigBad.
* KickTheDog: We'll just start with "he delivers poisoned milk to everyone's doorstep each morning" and go from there.
* HumanoidAbomination: He took on a milk-themed flavor of this in Mayfield's final event, as [[spoiler: Zemekis]] pulled out all the stops.
%%* {{Jerkass}}
* PungeonMaster: He rarely talks, but in his fight with the Postman during the "Exit" event of early 2011, [[http://mayfield-rpg.livejournal.com/1184160.html?thread=22686880 he wouldn't stop making dairy puns]].
%%* TheVoiceless

----

:'''The Postman'''

-->''"Good to see you, good to see you! How's the family? Great, great! Here's your package, and--oh, gosh, I nearly forgot, there's a ''tiiiiny'' little processing fee--if you'd be so good as to sign on this dotted line..."''

Mayfield's very own postal worker, charming and witty--at first glance. First appeared during the "Payable on Delivery" event in August 2010, he provided captives with a way to get more of their original powers and possessions back without having to endure a number of monthly events to do so. Of course, dealing with him had its own terrible price.

!!!Tropes associated with the Postman

* AmbiguouslyEvil: He helps the captives as much as he hurts them, and for years his real motivations were unknown.
%%* AxCrazy
* CruelToBeKind: As was revealed in the game's final events, the Post Office's EquivalentExchange system for regains wasn't his choice. In order to give captives their regains on demand, he ''had'' to take something significant from them [[http://mayfield-rpg.dreamwidth.org/646585.html as a workaround for Mayfield's rules]].
* EnigmaticMinion: He wasn't loyal to the Mayor or the other town officials and was regarded by them as a threat, but he played along in their theatrics.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He sure was chipper about all the suffering his post office system caused the captives in his initial appearance.
* GivenNameReveal: His real name is Andrew Blake.
* HamToHamCombat: During the "Exit" event of early 2011, he parried the Milkman's wordplay with his own postal puns.
* {{Infodump}}: In the final event, he [[http://mayfield-rpg.dreamwidth.org/644387.html explained the real story of Mayfield and John Zemekis]].
* {{Jerkass}}: He's disdainful of the captives, but not on Grady's actively homicidal level..
* KilledOffForReal: By Mrs. Johnson, after Zemekis was finally overthrown.
* NeutralNoLonger: In the final event, he finally started actively helping the captives, at the behest of his recently-freed sister.
%%* TheSixthRanger
* ThickerThanWater: He's actually the brother of the Librarian.
* WildCard: Acknowledged as such by both the captives and the captors.

----

:'''The Librarian'''

The quiet old woman who runs the Mayfield Public Library, who [[http://mayfield-mods.livejournal.com/10416.html first appeared]] in November 2009 after the "Democracy" event. When she isn't shuffling books, she's mumbling to herself. It's hard to get a straight answer out of her. She prefers to be left alone--maybe that's why she works in the library, where she's quick to hush down anyone who speaks above whisper level.

!!!Tropes associated with the Librarian:

* KilledOffForReal: One of the last named [=NPCs=] to die, she remained in Mayfield with Mrs. Johnson as it collapsed.
* PlotRelevantAgeUp: Mayfield transformed her into a 56-year old woman, but she's actually much younger than this.
* GivenNameReveal: Her real name is Annie Blake.
* ManchurianAgent: The droning performed on her is stranger than most. She was, for example, unable to say her real age. At times, [[http://thatsnotaknife.livejournal.com/6534.html?thread=847238#t847238 she would suddenly act like a typical Mayfield drone]]] but hand over [[http://mayfield-rpg.dreamwidth.org/611308.html?thread=67380716#cmt67380716 important or relevant information]] to those talking to her.
* ScaryLibrarian: Don't ruin the books.
%%* ShrinkingViolet
* ThickerThanWater: The Postman is actually her brother.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Hinted at in the April Fool's event during a conversation with Billy Smith, confirmed in the "Don't You Forget About Me" event of late 2012.

[[/folder]]
----
[[folder: '''The Smith Household''']]

----

:'''John Smith'''

The original father of the Smith household, he suddenly disappeared and was replaced by Jack Smith around September 2010.

!!!Tropes associated with John Smith:

* [[PutOnABus Killed or Put on a Bus]] [[KilledToUpholdTheMasquerade to Uphold the Masquerade]]: The last interaction John Smith had with the captives was with [[Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers Australia and Canada]], in which [[http://mr-blandy-bland.livejournal.com/12998.html?thread=813510#t813510 he freely used the real names of Jane Smith and Officer Grady]]. Considering Jack took his place only a week or two later, this may be why he was replaced, [[http://mayfield-mods.livejournal.com/35385.html as was hinted at by the Mayor]] when he called it "damage control."
%%* MrSmith
* Standard50sFather: Complete with ValuesDissonance and implications of DomesticAbuse.
* UnPerson: The rest of the Smith family didn't bat an eye when Jack took his place. [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=5692836#t5692836 And wouldn't know who he was when asked.]]
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: It's not quite clear ''what'' his fate was, once he'd been replaced.

----

:'''Jack Smith'''

The (new) father of the Smith household. He's a U.S. Army veteran, patriotic and all-American. When he's not helping people around the neighborhood, Jack likes to spend his time making friends down at Olney's, though he has a tendency to bring that sort of work home with him.

!!!Tropes associated with Jack Smith:

* TheAlcoholic: Sometimes he'd be drunk when on "official business" with the town's captives. He spent most of the party that the Smith household held during September 2010 drinking booze.
* ClosestThingWeGot: After the "Cream of the Cop" event in August 2011, he was given the job of Chief of Police. [[http://mayfield-mods.livejournal.com/78523.html At his behest]]--one, to stop [[AxCrazy "Officer" Milkman's]] DeadlyGame and to take a more active role in running the town. And two, to get some time ''away'' from [[CreepyChild Lucy Smith]].
* DontMakeMeTakeMyBeltOff: Espoused this as friendly advice to other husbands in town, but never actually did it to his "children."
* FauxAffablyEvil: As cheerful and personable as the guy seems, he's certainly not above twisting reality to make people die awful deaths for acting out of turn.
* KilledOffForReal: Died a ''very'' painful death in Mayfield's final event, when Zemekis awoke and flayed the skin from his body alive.
%%* MrSmith
* PeoplePuppets: Demonstrated the power to [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=6114468#t6114468 compel captives to do things against their will]].
* ThickerThanWater: He's revealed himself to be the Mayor's real son in private conversations with him.
* RealityWarper: Was that punch you were drinking? [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=5847204#t5847204 Sorry, it's bleach now!]] Eavesdropping on his phone call? [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=6293668#t6293668 Now you're in a gas chamber!]]
* ReplacementGoldfish: Took over as father of the Smith household in October 2010.
* Standard50sFather: He'd also flaunt misogynistic ValuesDissonance of his own at times.
* VillainTeleportation: He's used it a few times.

----

:'''Jane Smith'''

The original wife of the Smith household.

!!!Tropes associated with Jane Smith:

* AndIMustScream: Unlike the Mayor, Grady, and Jack Smith, Samantha wasn't willingly choosing to play the role of Jane Smith. It's because she was droned into it. Imperfectly so, and [[http://bluecapboy.livejournal.com/9002.html?thread=760362#t760362 every now and then]] the programming would crack or she would resist it.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: After the events in Westport during May 2012, [[Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers The Netherlands and America]] used the evidence they found to [[http://windmill.livejournal.com/7933.html?thread=2629117#t2629117 deliver a volley of these]] to Jane, to try and break her droning. Grady put a stop to it by locking down their workplace and setting it on fire.
* DespairEventHorizon: After the "Proud to be a Mayfieldian" event for 2011's Fourth of July, Samantha's droning broke and she fell into this.
* FaceHeelTurn: Unwillingly. Writings by Richard Grey Westport in May 2010 revealed that she was originally part of his resistance, and that she was the first known victim of Zemekis' ability to drone people, changing her identity and personality. Captives found evidence that [[http://westport-rpg.livejournal.com/2225.html?thread=1502897#t1502897 she tried to resist it]] by writing down what she knew about her real self, only to fail.
* GivenNameReveal: Her real name is Samantha Achewood.
%%* {{Housewife}}
* {{Jerkass}}: Her programming sometimes made her [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=5863844#t5863844 slip in a jab or two]] when conversing with others.
* KilledOffForReal: As a {{Mercy Kill}} by Evan Olney when Mayfield's attempt to drone ''everyone'' for 2011's Fourth of July [[http://mayfield-mods.livejournal.com/73725.html?thread=4496637#t4496637 wound up breaking her own droning]].
* RealityWarper: Whether she was a conduit for it or causing it intentionally while droned, she could [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=5640356#t5640356 hurt]] [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=5873828#t5873828 and]] [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=6413988#t6413988 maim]] people with powers similar to the rest of the Smith household.
%%* StepfordSmiler
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Samantha is 24 years old, but "Jane Smith" is in her 30's.

----

:'''Jill Smith'''

Jack Smith's (new) wife and the mother of Lucy and Billy, Jill Smith is renowned for her delicious apple pies and lovely looks.

!!!Tropes associated with Jill Smith:

* AndIMustScream: Like Jane Smith before her, she was droned into her new role. And like Jane Smith, Jill tried to resist the droning, to the point her behavior started to glitch.
%%* {{Brainwashing}}
%%* {{Housewife}}
* ReplacementGoldfish: Replaced Jane Smith after the "Speak Up" event in July 2011.
* StepfordSmiler: Even more so than Jane Smith was.

----

:'''Billy Smith'''

One of the two kids in the Smith household, working as a paperboy. Billy loves to play baseball and ... well, not much else. He tends to get mixed up in [[BlatantLies harmless little pranks]] like broken windows and the occasional pet set on fire.

!!!Tropes associated with Billy Smith:

* BatterUp: Remember how we said he liked playing baseball? [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=5573796#t5573796 Yeah.]] He doesn't care ''who'' plays the "ball."
* CantGetInTroubleForNuthin: Captives trying to tell Billy's parents what the "rascal's" been up to would fail. [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=5993892#t5993892 He knew it,]] [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=5986468#t5986468 and abused it]].
* EnfantTerrible: Eagerly put captives into situations where they could [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=5551780#t5551780 kill or mutilate themselves in horrible ways]].
* FaceHeelTurn: Implied by evidence found in Westport. A letter by Billy, [[http://westport-rpg.livejournal.com/2387.html?thread=1821011#t1821011 addressed to Richard Grey]], revealed he was part of Richard's resistance, but later turned traitor and allowed himself to be turned into the brat that he was.
* IfICantHaveYou: Letters from Westport, and the Librarian's testimony in February 2011, revealed that Jacques was kicked out of Richard Grey's resistance when he tried to hurt Annie. This trope was implied as the reason.
* GivenNameReveal: His real name is Jacques, as the Librarian [[http://thatsnotaknife.livejournal.com/6534.html?thread=852358#t852358 revealed]] when talking to [[Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers Australia]] in February 2011.
* GroinAttack: He thinks [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=5982628#t5982628 this makes for a good knock-knock joke]].
* KidsAreCruel: [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=5804196#t5804196 Oh boy was he ever.]] He freely bullied and taunted anyone and everyone.
%%* ObfuscatingStupidity
* OlderThanTheyLook: Implied in the letter he wrote to Richard Grey in Westport, and again [[http://mayfield-mods.livejournal.com/60181.html in a conversation he had with the Librarian]].
* PeoplePuppets: Demonstrated the power to [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=5579940#t5579940 control the bodies of captives]] and [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=5524132#t5524132 make them do things against their will]].
* {{Pyromaniac}}: Loves carnage, explosions, fires, and seeing people and animals burn to death.
%%* StepfordSmiler
* RealityWarper: Like the rest of the Smith household. Though [[PeoplePuppets direct control]] was his favorite power, [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=5577636#t5577636 he wasn't above turning drinks into drain cleaner]] or [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=5838500#t5838500 filling shoes with broken glass]].
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Billy's fate during Mayfield's final event isn't made explicit, but it's implied that Zemekis killed him as horribly as he did Jack Smith.

----

:'''Lucy Smith'''

-->''"Of ''course'' they wouldn't want to leave! Why would they? ... ... Everyone ''has'' to stay. They ''have'' to. Don't you '''understand?''' Because-- ... ... it's perfect here. It doesn't matter what they want. They're going to be here '''forever.'''"''

A friendly little girl, Billy's female counterpart in every way. Lucy likes nothing more than to play house with her precious dollies, and is always up for making new friends. She's a very bright lass for her age, and always gets the best grades at school. She's also excellent at drawing with crayons, and her precocious, charming behavior is sure to get a smile out of anyone.

!!!Tropes associated with Lucy Smith:

%%* CantGetInTroubleForNuthin
* CreepyChild: And ''how''. For a while it was heavily implied that [[spoiler:she's the ManBehindTheMan and the real BigBad]].
%%* DeliberatelyCuteChild
%%* DissonantSerenity
%%* FakingTheDead
* GivenNameReveal: Her real ''identity'' is [[spoiler: John Zemekis]]. Tropes relevant to [[spoiler: him]] specifically are in [[spoiler: his]] own section.
%%* TheManBehindTheMan: The Girl Behind The Man.
%%* KidsAreCruel
* PeoplePuppets: Like the rest of the Smith household, had the power to take control of the bodies of captives and do things against their will. During the party the Smith household held during September 2010, this took the form of [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=5399972#t5399972 stick]] [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=6096804#t6096804 figure]] [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=5897892#t5897892 crayon drawings]].
* RealityWarper: Tended to use this power in subtle ways, such as with the crayon drawings at the Smith party in September 2010. Sometimes, however, she was not so subtle--like in [[http://mayfield-logs.livejournal.com/79524.html?thread=6012324#t6012324 her treatment]] of [[Anime/WeissKreuz Schuldig]].
%%* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld
* TheQuietOne: At first, such as at the Smith household's party in September 2010. Not so much in the following year.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Tried to put on this appearance for the early 2011 event "Exit." [[spoiler: It was an elaborate April Fools' ploy.]]
%%* {{Yandere}}

[[/folder]]
----
[[folder: '''Others''']]

----

:'''Sergei Smirnov'''

-->''"Mother Russia is gone, and we can only pretend to her glory."''

A citizen of Maipole, the Soviet Union equivalent of Mayfield. He and his family were Maipole's equivalent to the Smith household in Mayfield--upstanding and hard-working Soviet citizens who were models of comradeship and party loyalty. During the event "Better Dead" in October 2010, Sergei was one of the last surviving residents of that town after Grady killed everyone there. He escaped and [[http://mayfield-rpg.livejournal.com/891271.html tried to seek refuge in Mayfield]] ... but he didn't last long.

!!!Tropes associated with Sergei Smirnov:

* AnArmAndALeg: Narrowly escaped Grady during the slaughter at Maipole, [[http://mayfield-rpg.livejournal.com/891271.html?thread=17840519#t17840519 but it cost him a hand]].
* {{Brainwashed}}: During "Milk Drinks You," like other Maipole comrades. When he reappeared in "Better Dead" later that year, it was broken and fragmented.
* CameBackWrong: According to him, Maipole's own [[http://mayfield-rpg.livejournal.com/891271.html?thread=18055047#t18055047 respawn system started falling apart]] long ago. It left them too weak to continue their bloody rivalry with Mayfield. It also made it hard for him to convey information to the captives due to imperfect restoration of his memories.
* CycleOfRevenge: He revealed that Mayfield and Maipole actually had a long-standing and bloody feud with each other.
* EverybodysDeadDave: He likened the destruction of Maipole [[http://mayfield-rpg.livejournal.com/891271.html?thread=17742471#t17742471 to that of Westport]], "the first American attempt."
* GivenNameReveal: His real name is Boris Khoklov.
* GloriousMotherRussia: This is what he thought of the ''real'' Soviet Union, and that Maipole was a horrible perversion of it.
* GreenEyedMonster: According to him, this was the reason Maipole's Party Leader tried to "liberate" Mayfield's captives. "[[http://mayfield-rpg.livejournal.com/891271.html?thread=17791367#t17791367 We couldn't let the Americans win.]]"
* IdentityAmnesia: He had some trouble [[http://mayfield-rpg.livejournal.com/891271.html?thread=17733255#t17733255 remembering who he was]] when he initially appeared in Mayfield. A few days later, he was more lucid.
* IKnowWhatYouFear: When Grady attacked Maipole, [[http://mayfield-rpg.livejournal.com/901236.html?thread=18259572#t18259572 Sergei tried to use an illusiory trap]], using Grady's memories against him to make him afraid and regretful. 278* {{Infodump}}: He tried to pass along some vital information on true nature of towns like Mayfield and Maipole to the captives--[[http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/n572/mayfieldmods/grigorisdocument.png reports]], [[http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/n572/mayfieldmods/grigori2.jpg documents]], [[http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/n572/mayfieldmods/commendationcopy.jpg letters]], [[http://maipolecomrades.livejournal.com/4214.html handbooks]], or [[http://i430.photobucket.com/albums/qq29/dominiongun/calamity-1.jpg newspaper clippings]].
* InvisibilityFlicker: During his first days in Mayfield, he would flicker in and out of existence randomly, but when the Mayor alerted Grady to his presence, he said Sergei was cloaked.
* KilledOffForReal: Once he was caught by Grady, Sergei was tortured, set on fire, and ultimately lynched from a tree outside City Hall. [[http://mayfield-rpg.livejournal.com/921411.html Just in time for Halloween.]]
* LossOfIdentity: As he explained to [[Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers China and America]] (and later [[Literature/HaruhiSuzumiya Yuki Nagato]]), he was formerly a hero and a Colonel in the Soviet Army, but [[http://mayfield-rpg.livejournal.com/891271.html?thread=17800071#t17800071 he's been changed]] [[http://mayfield-rpg.livejournal.com/891271.html?thread=17859207#t17859207 many times]] [[http://mayfield-rpg.livejournal.com/901236.html?thread=18192244#t18192244 since then]].
* OutOfTheFryingPan: He wasn't necessarily trying to reach Mayfield when he escaped Maipole, but did when exploiting the method Grady used, as he [[http://mayfield-rpg.livejournal.com/891271.html?thread=17795719#t17795719 revealed]] to [[http://mayfield-rpg.livejournal.com/903462.html?thread=18311206#t18311206 captives]].
* PowerIncontinence: Early in his escape, he wasn't able to control his teleportation, and [[http://mayfield-rpg.livejournal.com/891271.html?thread=17781127#t17781127 begged for people to stop him from teleporting away]].
* RedScare: Mayfield's leadership treated his presence in town this way.
%%* RenegadeRussian
* TheMole: As it turned out by the 2012 event "Don't You Forget About Me," Sergei was actually an agent of Mr. Grey's.
* SoleSurvivor: After Grady personally slaughtered everyone in Maipole for trying to steal Mayfield's captives, he was the last one left.

The befuddled old man who runs a gas station on the edge of a forest outside of town. Phil always takes the time to stop and chat with the people that drop by.

:'''Richard Grey'''

-->''"We were so desperate for escape, so desperate for a life without fear and pain, that we handed the power of God over to a madman and then acted surprised when he turned on us. I always knew we were cowards, but I never realized we were fools until it was far too late."''

For most of Mayfield's run, an enigmatic figure. Starting with the summer 2012 event "Step Right Up" and later, "Don't You Forget About Me," more about him was revealed.

!!!Tropes associated with Richard Grey:

* ApocalypticLog: He left [[http://westport-rpg.livejournal.com/1436.html?thread=604828#t604828 pieces]] of [[http://westport-rpg.livejournal.com/2387.html?thread=1924179#t1924179 these]] in Westport.
* BigGood: For what little assistance he could provide, he was genuinely trying to save the people of Mayfield from Zemekis.
* FlingALightIntoTheFuture: After Evan betrayed his resistance, Richard decided to face death with dignity and make a doomed last stand against Zemekis. Before he did so, [[http://westport-rpg.livejournal.com/3017.html he left a final message]] for anyone who would find it, begging them to find and save Annie Blake--such as the captives who wound up in Westport in May 2010.
* LaResistance: He was running his own war against John Zemekis for years, separate from that of the captives. The evidence found in Westport during May 2010 revealed that he, Evan Olney, Annie Blake, Samantha Achewood and others tried to escape Zemekis' grip by creating an identical town to live in. Even after his death, he tried multiple times to covertly aid Mayfield's new captors, but there was little he could do directly to stop the torture.
* KilledOffForReal: Zemekis deleted whatever was left of him from Mayfield's system at the conclusion of "Don't You Forget About Me."
* PosthumousCharacter: Grey was killed by Zemekis after an argument between the two, many years ago. [[http://westport-rpg.livejournal.com/1436.html?thread=839068#t839068 His corpse was found in Westport's pool.]] The "Grey" that the captives wound up working with was something of a case of HauntedTechnology.

:'''Mrs. Johnson'''

-->''"Top brass is getting impatient, handsome. He's decided that this whole project needs a more ... ''feminine'' touch."''

Another woman who has some connection with those in control of Mayfield.

!!!Tropes associated with Mrs. Johnson:

* AGodAmI: Once Zemekis was finally dealt with, she took over control of Mayfield. The power quickly went to her head.
* AxCrazy: ''Easily'' the most sadistic of all of Mayfield's captors.
* EarlyBirdCameo: First showed up in the mod account's userpics in September 2009.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Even Jack Smith and the Mayor think she went too far, and Jack was eager to try and put an end to her cruel experiments during the events of early 2012.
* KilledOffForReal: One of the last named [=NPCs=] to die, trapped in Mayfield as it finally collapsed on itself.
* MedicalHorror: During the events of early 2012, her plan for fixing the broken resurrection machine involved a lot of pointless mutilation and medical experiments on captives, often while they were fully awake, conscious, and without any anesthetic.
* PeoplePuppets: During the game's final event, Mrs. Johnson usurped control over Mayfield and used her new powers to directly take control of captives' bodies, using them to hunt down and kill people while fully conscious and incapable of stopping themselves.

----

:'''Johnathan Zemekis'''

-->''"There was a time when ... I genuinely wished to save them ... and they wished to be sAvEd ... There was a day when I was a fully a man, and there was a time when I was a fully a machine. Between them ... many confusing days."''

The real identity of Lucy Smith and The Milkman. For most of Mayfield's run, the true John Zemekis was "asleep," immersed in Mayfield's control systems, though he was still aware and able to act through his avatars.

!!!Tropes associated with John Zemekis:

* AGodAmI: Being in direct control of Mayfield's systems made him a quite a megalomaniac, to put it mildly.
%%* BigBad
* CyberneticsEatYourSoul: According to him, being integrated directly into Mayfield's systems overwhelms a person with so much data and information that they stop thinking as a rational human would--and more in "absolutes and abstracts," as he put it.
* {{Expy}}: Of Stanislaus Braun from ''VideoGame/Fallout3'', at least on the surface. The motivations for the cruelty he inflicted are way different than Braun's, who [[ItAmusedMe mostly did it to alleviate his boredom]].
* KilledOffForReal: After Mrs. Johnson overthrew him with the help of The Postman and The Librarian, he was left to die in the Church, surrounded by glitch holes that would have eventually consumed him if a [[TabletopGame/{{Warhammer 40000}} certain space marine]] hadn't helped his death along.
* LastWords: "Lucille."
* MrExposition: The one time characters could speak with him directly, in his true form, [[http://mayfield-mods.dreamwidth.org/94198.html was after he had been defeated]] in the final event of the game. He freely and honestly answered questions they had about Mayfield and why he did what he did ...
** HisNameIs: ... but he was summarily executed by [[Literature/HorusHeresy Garviel Loken]] while in the midst of answering questions.
* StartOfDarkness: Long before the game began, his argument with (and murder of) Richard Grey sparked the idea to start kidnapping (or rather, ''copying'') people from other universes in search of people who would accept what Mayfield's original residents wouldn't.
* TheUnfettered: There was very little he wasn't willing to do to try and achieve his goal--and by the final events, did even those few things taboo to him.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: Once he "awoke," he began killing off the Mayor and the Smiths.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: He wanted people to agree with him that Mayfield was a perfect place to live, and would never want to leave no matter ''what'' happened to them.

----

:'''Your Family'''

Ideally, everyone who arrives in Mayfield is paired up with three or more other captives to create a household of a husband, wife, and two children. When the town is unable to pull in enough people to fill one or more of those slots, they are instead filled out by drones. Especially common for newly added streets as the city expands.

!!!Tropes associated with family drones:

* AbsurdlyYouthfulParents: Since drones think themselves biological relatives of the rest of the family, permanently droned captives remain in the house in which they were droned until a new captive is brought in to replace them, and most captives are considered adults when they turn 18 (and not a year before!) ... this created situations where teenagers had "parents" that were only a few years older than them.
* CreepyChild: The drone children always act like [[CheerfulChild Cheerful Children]], but once a person finds out what's ''really'' going on with the drones ...
%%* DesignatedParents
* HappilyMarried: Or so the drone spouse/drone parents would have you believe.
* {{Housewife}}: Most, if not all, of the drone wives.
* NoBloodTies: ''None'' of the drones will be related to a captive, unless they are a drone of a former relation.
* NuclearFamily: As per the 1950's America setting.
* Standard50sFather: Most, if not all, of the drone husbands.
