* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Originally, she was rather popular with the witches, but [[spoiler:because she attacked Funa, everyone except Isara and Mary turned on her]].
* BreakTheHaughty: The game ''loves'' making her life miserable and knocking her ego down a peg. [[spoiler:The first dead end comes from Dronya overestimating the situation and then getting killed as a result.]]
* BrokenBird: She's very distant and mean-spirited to everyone around her including Luca. Her past was very painful. [[spoiler:Crippled at a young age, taken in by Baba Yaga, isolated and bullied by her peers except Isara, she had given up on life even as a young girl. Raped by Klaus when he believed she took Isara away from him and eventually losing Isara herself. Hell, she dies herself and is still miserable.]]
* BuxomBeautyStandard: She has a busty figure and notes that Petrone is often leering at her chest.
* CameBackWrong: Transferring souls does not leave memories properly intact, [[spoiler:leading to Dronya being a slightly different person from Velnya. In the end, Dronya rejects Luca's attempts to truly revive her, as she fears she will suffer this again and forget the love she holds for the young girl]].
* TheChewToy: Childhood was miserable. Current life is just as bad.
* CreepyChild: Was seen as one in her youth.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Multiple times throughout the game. [[spoiler:Stabbed multiple times to death, stabbed in the eyes, raped and died by blood loss, and being ripped apart limb per limb. It's more toned down when you realize Dronya is a puppet like the soldiers you've been controlling.]]
* DeadAllAlong: Velnya died long before the story began, [[spoiler:saving Luca from falling to her death but dying herself in the process. Luca bound her soul to one of Isara's dolls and has been being kept alive in that state by nightly mana infusions. Baba Yaga gave her doll form the name Dronya]].
%%* DeadpanSnarker
* DecoyProtagonist: Though she takes the role for a while, [[spoiler:the story slowly drifts to focus on Luca and her goals in life]].
* DefrostingIceQueen: It takes a combination of [[spoiler:Luca getting injured and being pushed into a corner by Funa]] for her to open up to Neldo and Marietta in particular. In a similar vein, she starts to warm up to Luca when she realizes how much she misses her.
* DoesNotLikeMen: She is much harsher toward men, especially in regards to the use of her glamours. She regularly accuses Neldo of being a pedophile for being protective of Luca, and forced a pair of guards to attempt to work themselves to death. [[spoiler:Klaus is quite likely to blame for this, and the guards were subjected to that for their threats of essentially reenacting her childhood trauma.]] However, many characters point out that Dronya does make an exception for Neldo, who she starts entrusting Luca to.
* DyingAsYourself:
** In the Viewing Room, as Velnya's memories begin to return, she realizes both that Luca will use the keys to [[spoiler:revive her, wiping out "Dronya" in lieu of Velnya, and that ''something'' (implied to be Velkuvrana) isn't going to allow her to leave]]. She refuses both and forces the issue.
** Much later, [[spoiler:in the postgame, as the alternate Velkuvrana is about to win, Dronya Poppet #1 — i.e., the Dronya last seen in the Viewing Chamber — comes to her senses just long enough to help screw over Velkuvrana]].
* EvilCripple: Dronya is not the nicest person around, regularly [[MindRape Mind Raping]] people into doing what she needs them do, and she's missing a leg.
* {{Expy}}: The friend of parents to a young girl who can manipulate souls who is left to care for her following their deaths, despite her own death. Dronya is essentially a female [[VideoGame/PhantomBrave Ash]].
* EyeScream: In the second dead end, [[spoiler:Juliet orders the guards to blind Dronya, thus preventing her from being able to fight back]].
* FailedASpotCheck: She fails to identify some key people from her past in Refrain. [[spoiler:Notably Klaus, a man who had raped her when she was a young girl. That he has supposedly been killed, and cleaned himself up rather well, going from thuggish to a handsome butler, somewhat excuses the failure to identify him.]] Also [[spoiler:Funa brings up that because Dronya is a puppet of what Velnya is supposed to be, she lost most of her memories of her past, thus preventing her from realizing that both Klaus and Marietta are both people from her past]].
* HatesBeingTouched: She doesn't even allow people to help her up if she falls.
* HoistByHerOwnPetard: [[spoiler:The love potion prank she pulls on Juliet gets backfired on her and she nearly ends up in a compromising position with a sheep as a result]].
* IKnowYourTrueName: She threatens to use Luca's true name against her to make her behave early on in the game. [[spoiler:[[ChekhovsGun In the end, she uses Mezzaluca's name to force the girl to abandon her]], knowing that without using this to force her, the child would do anything to revive her, even at the cost of losing the current Dronya to Velnya.]]
* {{Irony}}: Dronya views everyone around her as her puppets, [[spoiler:yet she herself happens to be one]].
* JediMindTrick: By reaching her hand toward people and using her power to manipulate the latent mana in other people she can manipulate their minds. It doesn't work on witches, at least not ones of power greater than hers.
* JerkAss: She is extremely unpleasant in general, but particularly to Luca.
* KickTheMoralityPet: On multiple occasions, she has hurt Luca's feelings that goes from being played for comedy to being downright depressing.
* NoSenseOfDirection: She gets lost very easily, relying on Luca and others to keep her on the right track to wherever it is she's going.
* OneWomanArmy: She is this in the BadFuture. [[spoiler:Velkuvrana created several copies of Dronya, each of which required a small army of Great Witches to take out even a single one and resulted in numerous deaths. By the time Tractie returns to the future, Mezzaluca, Spina, and Zorok are the only Great Witches left, and Dronya #4 arrives to toss the Spina's head around to taunt Mezzaluca before disintegrating it over the lack of a reaction. This copy serves as the first boss of the future timeline.]]
* PetTheDog: Even before her character development hits her, Dronya is rather nice to Tractie, although this might be because a.) the book can't speak and b.) the book actually gets stuff done for her.
* PseudoRomanticFriendship: [[spoiler:Velnya's relationship with Isara was an intense one of ''these'', at the very least. However, it's never made clear if she actually reciprocated Isara's actual romantic feelings]].
%%* SlasherSmile
* SnarkToSnarkCombat: With Neldo. When the two aren't prioritizing Luca, they are busy insulting each other.
* StarCrossedLovers: Baba Yaga's threats of murder, Isara being forcibly married off to a noble, dying of illness, and her failed resurrection, on top of [[spoiler:Velnya's own death and Dronya's decision to make it final, all serve to ensure that the two women would never have the chance to be together]]. However, the last scene in the postgame is [[spoiler:Isara and Velnya embracing Luca. No explanation is given, although it could be that they [[EarnYourHappyEnding earned their happy ending]] in another timeline]].
* SupernaturalSensitivity: She can sense the flow of mana, as well as the presence of souls.
* TheyKilledKennyAgain: Multiple times in this game, resulting in a dead game that the game suggests that you save. [[spoiler:Luca is the one restarting everything to keep her alive.]]
* TraumaButton: [[spoiler:Velnya was raped by Klaus, and though Dronya doesn't remember having been her, she still dislikes having men stare at her lustfully (and isn't a big fan of men in general), nor does she enjoy Marietta's forceful advances, to the point of StressVomit]].
* {{Tsundere}}: What she is ultimately revealed to be. "Dronya will say the exact opposite of what she really feels."
* UnsympatheticComedyProtagonist: The first few chapters are all about her being a jerk to everyone around and getting karmic punishment for it one way or another. Things get more serious around the Umbra dungeon, and we learn more of her past and motivations.
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: Whether she's in a tight spot or is curious about something, Dronya's first response is usually to use her Glamour to hypnotize her victim. Unfortunately, not only are some people immune to it, but the hypnosis takes a bit of time before it fully kicks in, leaving her a sitting duck against physically stronger targets if they are aware that she's pulling something on them.

!! Tractatus de Monstrum

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bu_rekitei_001.png]]

The fabled cursed tome.
----

* HeroicMime: As a book, Tractie is not capable of speech, though it is capable of otherwise expressing itself slightly.
* HeroicComedicSociopath: Many of Tractie's options in the dungeon can result in harming the citizens of the labyrinth instead of doing good. Sometimes, Tractie can ignore negotiation altogether and murder the person to get the item needed. Other times, Tractie will wait until the person dies before obtaining said item.
* KarmaMeter: Tractie is given one at the very beginning of the game, but all it does is either power up pacts that are catered to bad karma or make it easier for the enemy to get a critical hit/gore shot on your puppet. Karma goes up from fighting certain enemies (often the ones that can't fight back or the ones that are considered "good") and doing certain options in the dungeon (often killing instead of negotiating). A Witch Petition is the only way to decrease karma back to 0.
* MessianicArchetype: Tractie bears the sins of the citizens of Refrain in order to allow them to properly pass on. Mechanically, this is shown by maxing out its karma with each soul saved.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Everyone just uses the nickname Luca gave it and call it "Tractie". [[spoiler:Mezzaluca and Newton[=/=]Newt seem to be the only ones who know the name of the soul bound to the Tractatus de Monstrum, i.e. the name the player inputs at the beginning of the game.]] There are also some denizens of the labyrinth who seem to recognize the Tractatus de Monstrum, and thus call it as such.
* ServileSnarker: While Tractie can't talk, it can react to situations when given the chance. It is very easy for Tractie to mock Dronya without having to say anything to her (such as taking Neldo's side of the argument).
* SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong: Ultimately, its true mission is to prevent [[spoiler:Velkuvrana]] from awakening.
* SoulJar: [[spoiler:Mezzaluca[=/=]Luca]] binds a soul to the Tractatus de Monstrum, thus creating Tractie.
* SupportPartyMember: While the Witch Brigade are the ones doing all the fighting, Tractie can bolster it by using Reinforcement, which can be replenished by harvesting mana or by returning to the caravan.
* TookALevelInBadass: The Tractatus de Monstrum played in the tutorial, while sentient, did not possess much in the way of a will, leaving its progress severely lacking. Once it was given a soul, Tractie easily tears through the labyrinth. [[spoiler:The soulless Tractatus de Monstrum took ''fifteen years'' to do what Tractie did in a couple of months.]]

Dronya's apprentice.
----

* TheApprentice: To Madam Dronya. [[spoiler:Or rather, this is the role she forces herself to assume to stabilize Dronya after her creation at Baba Yaga's urging.]]
* BigGood: Luca is the one providing Tractie with the Witch Brigade and [[spoiler:undoing each of Dronya's deaths in order to achieve their goals. Mezzaluca is the leader of Tanis's last stand against Velkuvrana]].
* BreakTheCutie: The death of her parents and [[spoiler:Velnya resulted in her becoming a powerful witch. The third dead end went out of its way to have her watch as Dronya and Neldo are killed in front of her]].
* CheerfulChild: She's extremely pleasant and cheerful, nice to everyone.
* TheCutie: She's a cheerful and friendly little girl without an ounce of malice to her.
* DisappearedDad: Her father died at some point before the start of the game. [[spoiler:It's implied that Velnya transferred his soul into Baltini III.]]
* {{Expy}}: A cheerful young orphan with the power to place the souls of the dead within inanimate objects to temporarily give them life once more, being cared for by the soul of her mother's friend. Luca is essentially [[VideoGame/PhantomBrave Marona]]. [[spoiler:As the last hope for the world in a BadFuture who sends some of her closest allies, one of which she was in love with, back in time to defend herself and ensure things play out for the better, Mezzaluca is a composite of [[Franchise/{{Terminator}} Sarah and John Connor]].]]
* HotWitch: In the future.
* GoMadFromTheIsolation: By the end of the game, Mezzaluca is the only living thing left on Tanis. [[spoiler:She just wanders the world looking for life that doesn't exist, never ceasing to smile because the very ability to feel negative emotions has been lost to her.]]
* GreaterScopeParagon: Mezzaluca serves this role for the timeline of the first part of the game, [[spoiler:sending Tractie, Neldo, and Newton back in time to give that version of the world a chance at survival. Luca serves this role to the future timeline, getting Newton's help to return Tractie to Mezzaluca so that it can put an end to Velkuvrana before it can move on to destroy more worlds]].
* TheNicknamer: Quite adept at coming up with names on the spot, such as Bah-bah the lamb and Tractie. The dolls used in the tutorial were also named by her.
* MarionetteMaster: Her magic seems to revolve around producing the puppet soldiers that Tractie uses to explore the well. [[spoiler:Dronya herself is also one of Luca's puppets.]]
* MessianicArchetype: [[spoiler:Mezzaluca takes in the souls of every formerly living thing on Tanis, and is forced to bear their sins and every emotion. Zorok claims that the burden has very likely driven her mad, something confirmed when Mezzaluca is the last living thing left in the world and only begins to recover after coming to the realization that she's going to be giving birth to repopulate the world.]]
* MissingMom: Luca's mother, [[spoiler:Isara]], passed away shortly after her birth.
* MoralityPet: Serves as one to Dronya and Neldo, but moreso Neldo, who has sworn to protect her.
* MysticalPregnancy: A trait of Soul Witches is that they can, if necessary, just spontaneously become pregnant. [[spoiler:After months of wandering the world alone, she finds Tractie once again and informs them that she'll be giving birth soon and repopulate the world.]]
* ObfuscatingStupidity: To the extreme as she is [[spoiler:the one resetting the world whenever Dronya dies]].
* ObliviousToLove: Has no idea that Fritz has a crush on her despite handing her a ring he made and giving her discounts. She also seems to miss the cue that Neldo might be interested in her despite the huge age gap…
* OutOfCharacterMoment: For much of the game, Luca is incredibly sweet, never showing anger or hatred towards anyone. [[spoiler:But when Funa threatens to have Fritz or Juliet taken by an Unclean One if she doesn't dismiss Dronya, Luca becomes uncharacteristically angry (complete with a unique portrait) and starts threatening Funa that she'll dismiss her instead if she doesn't back off. Funa, [[OhCrap scared for her life]], ''complies''.]]
* RippleEffectProofMemory: After the third Dead End, it's revealed that [[spoiler:Luca has been rewinding time after each of Dronya's deaths and subtly adjusting things to save her. She took the dagger Maylee used to kill Dronya, and set up the broom that gave away Juliet and the soldier's attempts to attack her as well. The third Dead End required more direct intervention, as she needed to be on hand to stop Dronya's leg from being shattered and to prevent Fritz from being taken by an Unclean One]].
* ShutUpHannibal: Gives a nice one to Funa when Funa taunts her and Dronya, [[spoiler:as well as threatening to have Fritz and Juliet taken by the Unclean Ones. This causes Luca to uncharacteristically snap at Funa, threatening to release her contract if she doesn't stop. Funa [[OhCrap complies]]]].
* TimeMaster: Luca is capable of [[spoiler:ever so slightly rewinding time. Her older self, Mezzaluca, has developed this power to such a level that she is able to send Neldo, Newton, and Tractie's souls back into the past to try to stop Furia from claiming Velkuvrana's body]].

A magical spider that works for Dronya.
----
* ArrangedMarriage: [[spoiler:Arranged with Isara. He seems to have been a good husband, but a ''husband'' isn't exactly what Isara was in the market for]].
* DoubleAgent: Was leaking information to [[spoiler:Baba Yaga of Dronya's progress, but also helping Dronya out by spying on Petrone]].
* KilledOffForReal: Because Luca set time back right after Baltini was [[spoiler:shown to be killed by Petrone, he remains dead]].
* LukeIAmYourFather: Baltini's soul is implied to be [[spoiler:Luca's father]].
* NiceGuy: He's not only gentlemanly and polite as a spider, but [[spoiler:Isara seems to have gotten along with Baltini's former self just fine, and even confided her past with Velnya and the other witches to him, something which must have been painful and indicates a great deal of trust toward him on her part. He was also a good dad]].
* InsistentTerminology: He prefers to be called Baltini the Third, not just Baltini.
* PapaWolf: Not trusting Baba Yaga, [[spoiler:he asks Velnya to transfer his soul into something that could allow him to watch over his daughter even if he has no memories of his past life]].

!! Neldo
!!! Voiced by: Creator/JunFukushima (Japanese), Creator/BillyKametz (English)

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bu_nerudo_007.png]]

A mysterious young man who is also an owl. Originally opposes Dronya in her exploration of the labyrinth, but after some mishaps, Neldo becomes an unofficial member of Dronya's place to her annoyance.
----

* AccidentalPervert: Often walks in on Dronya with no concern about how she feels. He doesn't have a reaction to her in less clothing. However, when he sees Luca in her pajamas, he gets extremely flustered. Dronya is quick to call him a pedophile as a result, which he quickly denies.
* AnimalMotif: The owl, given that is his true form.
* BodyguardCrush: Because Dronya accuses Neldo of being a pedophile, a lot of his interactions with Luca can be viewed as this. [[spoiler:However, he works with Luca in the future and is in love with her.]]
* DeadAllAlong: One of the conditions [[spoiler:for time travel is that the person must be dead]]. His current form is that of a possessed common owl projecting his former humanoid form when able.
* DeclarationOfProtection: To Luca.
* DevotedToYou: He swears on protecting Luca the moment he's given the opportunity. [[spoiler:In the future, he's in love with her, so his protection doesn't just extend to her younger self.]]
* FireForgedFriends: Initially threatens Tractie in the first few dungeons of the game. After he works with Dronya, he starts viewing Tractie as a comrade in arms and becomes as protective of Tractie as he is Luca.
%%* {{Katanas are Just Better}}
* LastOfHisKind: Neldo's true form is early on revealed to be an owl. Much later, it's clarified that he is the last of the owls of Yggdrasil, [[spoiler:who Furia had destroyed upon seeing their potential to hinder her plans]].
* MistakenForPedophile: Though she was probably just saying it to get a rise out of him, Dronya accuses him of being attracted to Luca because he's so nice to her. [[TimeTravelRomance However… it's complicated.]]
* NeckSnap: In the third bad end, he gets [[spoiler:his neck snapped by Nemto for trying to save Dronya. The only reason he got put into this situation was because Luca distracted him]].
* NotDistractedByTheSexy: No matter what happens, Neldo is never flustered whenever he sees Dronya in her nightgown or less. [[spoiler:Might have something to do with her status as a OneWomanArmy in the future.]]
* ScarfOfAsskicking: Sports a fairly luxurious scarf to go with his ensemble. He's also supernaturally skilled with his sword.
* SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong: Neldo's main reason for [[spoiler:going back in time is a combination of protecting Luca's past self and ensuring that Velkurana never awakens]].
%%* {{Slasher Smile}}
* SnarktoSnarkCombat: With Dronya. When he's not insulting her, he's paying attention to Luca.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: With Dronya and makes it clear that he doesn't like her and is only helping her to keep an eye on Luca.
* {{Troll}}: Messes with Dronya on minor things and hides information from her just to get a rise out of her.
* TheWorfEffect: Happens at least twice. Neldo speaks that he can take Baba Yaga down when things get tough, but only gets flicked across the room when he does try to attack her. [[spoiler:Same thing happens when Nemto attacks him.]]

A nun that lives at Refrain's abbey.
----

* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: Before the ritual, Marietta confesses her feelings to [[spoiler:Dronya, who politely declines]].
* EyepatchOfPower
* HopelessSuitor: To Dronya, especially when she realizes [[spoiler:Dronya still loves Isara even after her death]].
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Marietta is exceptionally attracted to Dronya and regularly flirts with her. For the most part, this behavior is treated as merely annoying, up until she gets more physically assertive about it after Luca goes to sleep. Dronya proceeds to panic and vomit, putting an end to things for a time. From that point on, she becomes exceptionally hostile with Marietta, only ever restraining herself out of respect for Luca.
%%* {{Lipstick Lesbian}}
* NiceGirl: One of the few people in the town that is helpful to Dronya and Luca. [[spoiler:However, even she has her limits when she made an attempt at burning Tractie.]]
* NoDoubtTheYearsHaveChangedMe: Having half her face burnt away and having pure red hair does wonders to hide from Dronya that she's [[spoiler:Mary, one of the only students under Baba Yaga to not have treated her horribly]].
%%* {{Obfuscating Stupidity}}
* ShrinkingViolet: As a child. She grew out of it.
* SilkHidingSteel: Despite being a soft-spoken person, she is capable of taking matters into her own hand.
* SoulJar: Unwillingly becomes one for [[spoiler:her grandmother, Baba Yaga]].
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Potatoes.
%%* {{Yamato Nadeshiko}}

A shepherd that lives in Refrain.
----
* ButtMonkey: Every scene he's in always has him being abused by Dronya or Marietta in some shape or form. Usually, it's a misunderstanding or he says something that deserves the abuse. Even his sheep turn on him!
* DeadAllAlong: Like Neldo, Newton had to die to [[spoiler:travel back in time. Noted to be a strange case in that the body he ended up in was his own, effectively allowing him to have survived the process in a roundabout way]].
* GodWasMyCopilot: Newt, or rather Newton, [[spoiler:was the Great Sage and one of three souls sent back to the past by Luca to save the world. Though he sealed his memory away to hide from Furia, his purpose was to [[GameplayAndStoryIntegration allow the soul who would inhabit the Tractatus de Monstrum to purify the trapped souls of Refrain]]]].
* ObfuscatingStupidity: At some point, he regains his original memories, though he hides it until the end-game.

!! Petrone

The acting governor of the town of Refrain and owner of the local item shop.
----
* AxCrazy: He's actually a [[spoiler:SerialKiller who murdered twelve of his wives]].
* BerserkButton: Lying to him is the quickest way to piss him off. [[spoiler:He brings a group of soldiers to Dronya's caravan when he finds out she's been lying about being Baba Yaga. He also murdered every single wife he ever had in life for lying about loving him, which is why he's trapped in Refrain.]]
* CassandraTruth: He appointed the death criers to inform them of the people that died each night to the Unclean Ones. However, since he's the only one who remembers the people who died by virtue of keeping constant tabs on them, all the death criers do is serve as an inconvenience.
* DeadAllAlong: Like everyone else in Refrain, he's actually someone who died. The sin that trapped Petrone in Refrain was [[spoiler:murdering his twelve wives. He knew they'd never love him, only his money, and that he'd never love them. The realization that the only person he ever loved was another man allows him to pass on]].
* KeepingSecretsSucks: He's the only one that remembers the deaths of those around him. He's forced to maintain a record of everyone who dies and refuses to stop.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: He pretends to know nothing, but secretly records details about everyone who dies.
* RippleEffectProofMemory: Every death in Refrain is quickly forgotten and warps the personalities of any who knew them. Petrone, though also affected by this, figured this out at some point and began keeping extensive records of every person in town and started the death crier tradition to try to force himself, and others, to remember. The records work for him, though the death criers don't really accomplish anything but annoying Dronya.
* StepfordSmiler: Type C. He shows his true colors when he learns he was lied to.
* WhoWantsToLiveForever: Zigzagged. While he clearly sees living the exact same day over and over again with no sense of yesterday or tomorrow to be had as a form of hell, he also doesn't want to be taken by the Unclean Ones, despite him describing their actions as their way of relieving the damned of their sin.

* AmnesiacDissonance: [[spoiler:A violent, rapist douchebag in life, due to DeathAmnesia]] Klaus seems to be at least superficially unfailingly polite and even thoughtful, as when he advised Luca on a gift for Dronya.
* AssholeVictim: [[spoiler:He raped Dronya when she was a child,]] so you can't say that he didn't have some karma waiting for him.
* CrazyJealousGuy: He was madly devoted to Isara to the point he is willing to [[spoiler:hurt and rape Dronya for catching Isara's eye]].
* CleansUpNicely: Comparing Klaus from the current events of the game and Klaus from Dronya's past would be akin to comparing two people polar opposite to one another.
* DeadAllAlong: Like everyone else in Refrain, he's actually someone who died. [[spoiler:His sin was raping Dronya when she was a child. Unlike some other residents of Refrain, he eventually allows himself to be taken by the Unclean Ones to pass on, an off-screen event revealed by Petrone. Despite this his soul can be found in the Refrain Labyrinth, speaking of his love of money, women, and violence. His soul truly passes on begging for someone to save him from himself and to show him love.]]
* {{Entitled to Have You}}: He felt he deserved Isara's love, so when Isara broke up with him [[spoiler:for Dronya, he takes Dronya away from the school, beats her up, and rapes her because she had the nerve to take Isara from him]].
* {{Killed Offscreen}}: Twice. The first in the flashback by Isara's hand. [[spoiler:The second when he allowed the Unclean Ones to take him.]]
* MoralityChain: Klaus is this for Petrone. [[spoiler:Losing him causes Petrone to become far more aggressive and murderous over any deception.]]
* RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil: When looking through Dronya's memories, you find [[spoiler:one of him forcing himself on her in retaliation for having "stolen Isara from him". Isara attacks him for this, and assures Dronya that he's ''probably'' dead. Given that he's around in the present, he apparently survived. As it turns out, however, he did not; this is the reason he's in Refrain, as it is actually a Purgatory for the souls of dead sinners]].
* TallDarkAndHandsome: He's quite attractive, and well-dressed and -mannered.
* WouldHitAGirl: When Isara took an interest in Velnya, his way of politely asking the latter to visit her in her room was to sock her in the stomach 'til she stopped resisting and drag her up. And he only got ''more'' charming from there.
* {{Yandere}}: For Isara.

* AssholeVictim: [[spoiler:She murdered her own sister for being adopted by nobles when she wasn't.]] Definitely had some karma waiting for her.
* DeadAllAlong: Like everyone else in Refrain, she's actually a person who died. [[spoiler:Her sin was her self-loathing, fear of happiness, and envy of those who get to be happy, leading her to murder her sister, who, unlike her, was adopted by nobles. Though originally stated to have been taken by the Unclean Ones Funa sent after her, her soul can be found in the Refrain Labyrinth and truly passes on when realizing she did find happiness in being praised for her baking skills.]]
* KarmicDeath: After being the cause of a dead end and in the new time forcing Dronya to take her appearance, [[spoiler:Dronya uses Maylee's appearance to kill Baba Yaga and then frame her for the crime. Even if she was innocent, Maylee freaks out and ends up being taken by the unclean]].
* MoralityChain: Serves as this to Juliet. [[spoiler:After she is taken by the Unclean Ones, Juliet reverts to being willing to associate with the worst of society and even pay them to ruin anyone who she views as more adored than herself.]]
* {{Took a Level in Jerkass}}: The moment she thinks Dronya is using her charms to woo Nemto, she immediately lashes out at her, Fritz, and Luca. [[spoiler:In one timeline, she even kills Dronya for trying to make amends with her. In the new timeline, she has no qualms beating up Dronya.]]

An ancient witch who runs Ruler Magic Academy, the school Dronya attended in her youth.
----
* AintTooProudToBeg: When Dronya manages to corner and fatally wound her, she goes door to door in Refrain begging for someone to help her.
* AssholeVictim: With how she abused all the witches that isn't Funa, her death comes off as very satisfying. [[spoiler:This ends up subverted when it turns out that Baba Yaga simply jumped into the body of her granddaughter in order to survive.]]
* BigBad: She's the source of most of the game's problems.
* BodySurf: She ends up inhabiting a number of bodies over the course of the story, including [[spoiler:her granddaughter Mary and Isara. Even Baba Yaga herself is just another vessel in a long line of vessels that Furia has possessed. She eventually claims the body of Velkuvrana]].
* EvilOldFolks: She's extremely old, and a very cruel teacher.
* {{Expy}}: Velkuvrana is, in just about every way but its name, [[spoiler:the Hundred Knight Niike. An ancient eldritch horror that travels between worlds to devour them, fully capable of spawning smaller pieces of itself to wreak havoc on every world in its path. It even ends up with an adorable vaguely humanoid fragment of itself known as Porte who faithfully runs about in a fancy helmet in service to her master. Unlike Niike, however, Velkuvrana never falls in love to spare a world and Porte does not play a major role in the story]].
* EyeScream: Velnya subjected Baba Yaga to [[spoiler:the same blind hell that Isara suffered. Velnya wanted her dead too, but that didn't work out]].
* IHaveManyNames: Aside from "Baba Yaga", she is also known as [[spoiler:Furia, the Calamity Witch. Her history of taking over other witches' bodies provides a long, if unstated, list of other aliases as well. By the end of the game, she has claimed another, Velkuvrana]].
* ImmortalityImmorality: While she uses [[spoiler:BodySurf tactics]] to expand her lifespan, her ultimate goal was to [[spoiler:steal the body of Velkuvrana, a truly immortal multi-dimensional SpacetimeEater that she witnessed destroying several worlds early in her lifespans]].
* JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope: Luca says that there might've been a time when her motivations were not so sinister. [[spoiler:Based on the entries in Tractie and messages left throughout the other worlds, there may have been some truth to that as she was originally trying to escape Velkuvrana. Her attempts at survival and the fragility of the many worlds she encountered might have led to her adopting her indifference, sadism, and desire for immortality.]]
* PublicDomainCharacter: She is based on the [[Literature/BabaYaga character of the same name]] from Slavic folklore and matches many of the conventions associated with her, including her haggardly appearance, powerful magic, chicken-legged hut, immortality, and cruelty towards children.

* {{The Bully}}: Bullied Velnya in magic school, and is still a jerk to Dronya.
* DeadAllAlong: [[spoiler:Funa, like Dronya, is one of Luca's dolls.]] Unlike Dronya, she is under Baba Yaga's command. Luca keeps Funa from tormenting Dronya too much by threatening to [[spoiler:release the contract binding her to the doll. Marietta, after destroying Funa, reveals that there are actually dozens of her around Refrain that are choosing to keep their distance out of self-preservation]].
* DubNameChange: Her Japanese name is Furunera.
* HumblePie: Velnya delivers a rather satisfying one upon her introduction, using her glamour to force Funa to act like a dog after tossing dog food in Velnya's face. Alas, this causes Velnya to be brutally punished by Baba Yaga for attacking her favorite student.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Most of her motivation does stem from thinking she's better than everyone else.
* {{Jerkass}}: Every scene she is in shows she is not a pleasant person.
* LaserGuidedKarma: For all of her tormenting of Dronya and high and mighty attitude toward Luca, she really has no authority over Luca and is easily talked down. [[spoiler:The fact that she can be killed like any other person despite looking down on humanity makes her death all the more satisfying.]]
* OhCrap: She spends much of the game acting high and mighty, but once [[spoiler:Luca threatens her with a dismissal]], she starts fearing for her life. [[spoiler:It's so effective that despite the fact that there are Funa poppets everywhere, all of them keep their distance out of fear of Luca.]]
* SmugSnake: She enjoys acting like she has the upper hand against Dronya. Her ego does prevent her from realizing that [[spoiler:Baba Yaga is already dead]].
* TeachersPet: Funa loves flaunting around that she is Baba Yaga's favorite student and doing anything to her will resort in Baba Yaga harming said person. Dronya learned this the hard way.

* CameBackWrong: Due to one of the Keys being false, [[spoiler:Dronya's attempts to revive Isara result in the woman being turned into a blacked nightmarish monstrosity that is promptly killed off once more]].
* CastFromLifespan: Due to the strain manipulating mana puts on her weak body, she's aware that she shortens her lifespan by using magic. When she briefly used her glamour to make Velnya back down and speak to her, it gave her a fever for two days.
* {{Cheshire Cat Grin}}: Her default expression.
* {{Chew Toy}}: Because of her illness, she hasn't been able to do anything she wanted. [[spoiler:It gets worse when she fails to escape the academy with Velnya. She ends up blind, engaged to someone she doesn't love, separated from the woman she loved without knowing why the communication stopped, and had a child that she didn't want to raise. She ends up dying of her illness and revived with nothing but anger and resentment.]]
* ChildMage: And a ChildProdigy at that. Baba Yaga herself took an interest in Isara's powerful magic ability.
* {{Eye Scream}}: She exerts so much of her power in trying to get Velnya to escape that she ends up [[spoiler:going blind as a result]].
* FilleFatale: At magic school, she takes an interest in Velnya (romantically) and Klaus (strictly as a plaything) and tries to manipulate them both into becoming her servants. She's actually [[LoveAtFirstPunch quite pleased]] when Velnya violently resists this. She's also a {{Deconstruction}} as she's not nearly as good at manipulating people as she thinks.
* ItAmusedMe: She likes interesting people like Klaus and Velnya. Not necessarily ''nice'' people, but interesting ones.
* JediMindTrick: Her glamour is ''way'' more powerful than Velnya's, as she demonstrated when Velnya tries it on her.
* {{The Lost Lenore}}: Serves as this for Dronya.
* {{Love at First Punch}}: Given that the first scene of them together involves Velnya throwing a vase at her head and them being close after that, it's obvious that Isara fell for Velnya who wasn't afraid to put her foot down despite her status.
%%* {{Love Hurts}}
* {{The Pollyanna}}: She's always smiling no matter what the situation calls for.[[spoiler:Over time, she starts losing that optimism due to how hopeless the situation starts becoming.]]
* PosthumousCharacter: She's dead before the start of the game.
* {{The Resenter}}: Once revived, all the negative emotions she felt about her situation comes out in full force. [[spoiler:Isara reveals how she blamed herself for failing to escape with Velnya before blaming her for not helping her do the dirty work. She got stuck with the arranged marriage, was forced to have a child, and died from her illness. Velnya, in contrast, while crippled, was free to do what she wanted, ignoring the fact she was miserable without her.]]
* {{Shoot the Shaggy Dog}}: Isara's original plan to [[spoiler:run away with Velnya failed when she failed to get rid of Baba Yaga by burning the house down and distracting the guards. This just causes her to become blind and both end up being dragged back anyway.]]
* {{Slasher Smile}}: When she's feeling sinister, her cat smile warps into this.
** However, [[spoiler:the final scene of the postgame shows Isara and Velnya embracing Luca, hinting that somewhere, Isara and Velnya [[EarnYourHappyEnding earned their happy ending]]]].
%%* {{Stepford Smiler}}
* TrophyWife: For all of her troubles, she ends up as one as punishment. However, her husband treats her like an actual person, which subverts the trope somewhat.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: She doesn't take well to others bullying Velnya. [[spoiler:She murders Klaus when she learns that he raped Velnya due to her breaking up with him.]]
%%* {{White Haired Pretty Girl}}

!! Zorok

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bu_zoroku_001.png]]

* BodyHorror: Her transformed state ends up looking like a massive version of her own head, her hair transforming into blue sludge as it flows down, constantly convulsing, covered in massive black holes, and vomiting bugs and black slime.
* TheResenter: Zorok comes off as exceptionally shy, retreating into her own shadows to just observe others. She was in love with Neldo, but because of her behavior, he spent all of his time with Mezzaluca instead and fell in love with her. Zorok uses her anger at Mezzaluca over this to fuel a spell that transforms herself into a monster capable of destroying Velkuvrana's wards, at the cost of her mind.

* OptionalBoss: After completing the true end, she can be found in Azu-Campanula and challenges Tractie to a fight. [[spoiler:She is [[VideoGame/TheWitchAndTheHundredKnight Metallia]] in everything but name, donning her late-game black-haired appearance from her own game, along with a cloak.]] Beating her grants you the [[OneManArmy Blackened Pact]] and the [[InfinityPlusOneSword 100 Demon Blade]].

* AmbiguouslyHuman: They're animated by human souls and capable of forming friendships and crushes on each other. [[AndIMustScream Hopefully]], going inanimate puts them to sleep or something.
* LivingToys: Being Puppet Soldiers, they are little more than dolls in the absence of mana.
* WeaponSpecialization: While any puppet can use any weapon, each facet has one weapon type associated with it, though they may have S+ proficiency in more than one.

!! Aster Knight

* {{Expy}}: The first design of the male Aster Knight is a reference to [[VideoGame/PhantomBrave Ash.]]
* JackOfAllStats: They sit comfortably middling in terms of physicality, being strong, bulky, and quick. They are even mediocre at donum.
* LastChanceHitPoint: Their "Stubbornness" skill allows them to survive a fatal blow once per battle with only 1 hit point.
* LuckStat: Two of their skills use this, with one raising the Luck stat and the other making it easier for them to guard (completely deflecting an attack) if their Luck is high.
* StealthPun: Several of their skills protect them from the '''Star'''tle status effect.
* WeaponSpecialization: Their skills strongly favor Lances.

!! Shinobushi
* DualWielding: Although any class an use two weapons, the Shinobushi has skills meant specifically for paired swords.
* FragileSpeedster: Their ideal setup is dual swords, making them frontline fighters who don't get the benefit of shields. Fortunately, they have high Dexterity and a skill specifically meant to make it harder for enemies to hit them.
* {{Killer Rabbit}}: The female Shinobushi gives off the vibe.
* LightningBruiser: Fast and lethal, but very poor donum users.
* {{Ninja}}: The female Shinobushi lean toward the ninja appearance than their male counterpart.
* PainAndGain: With their "Curse Share" skill, anytime they're under a status effect they do extra damage.
* {{Samurai}}: The male Shinobushi lean toward the samurai appearance than their female counterpart.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: The females...except for the fourth design, who seems to have stolen all the cloth from the others.
* WeaponSpecialization: Their skills strongly favor Swords.

!! Theatrical Star
* DeadpanSnarker: The second voice for the male theatrical star.
* {{Expy}}: The default male portrait draws a similarity to [[VideoGame/Disgaea4APromiseUnforgotten Emizel]] while the default female portrait is similar to [[VideoGame/DisgaeaHourOfDarkness Flonne]].
* PaintingTheFourthWall: One of the female voices does this, enthusiastically reading the "Battle Start" and "Victory" captions which start and end each fight.
* QuirkyBard: Particularly noteworthy, having high [[DrawAggro charisma]], and doubling rapport gain and loss.
* TokenMiniMoe: Especially the male portraits, though one female portrait in particular is [[BuxomBeautyStandard exempt.]]
* {{Tsundere}}: The second voice sample for the male theatrical star gives the impression given how snappy he is but in battle, making a quick compliment to whomever he has a high rapport with.
* WeaponSpecialization: Their skills strongly favor Bells.

!! Peer Fortress
* ChainmailBikini: Mostly averted, though the female's fourth design sports this. One of the voice samples for the voice unlocked along with it states that it's because it's "[[ShedArmorGainSpeed Easier to move around in]]... [[RuleOfSexy Plus it's hot.]]"
* MightyGlacier: Powerful and hardy, but also quite slow. However, if they are guarding, they almost always act first.
* WeaponSpecialization: Their skills strongly favor Katars. Unusually, they have one skill devoted to Hammers--no other class has a "cross-class" weapon skill. This may be due to the fact that you get them a good bit before you can make Gothic Coppelias, and will most likely find yourself in need of a good Blunt weapon user before then.

!! Marginal Maze
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: The default female portrait.
* BigEater: Female voice #4, with the samples seeking out things to eat.
* GeekPhysiques: All the male designs except the last one are considerably overweight. The ladies tend toward NerdsAreSexy, with the fourth one being a shortstack.
* SquishyWizard: Frail and sluggish, but quite potent with donum.
* TooKinkyToTorture: Their "Master Masochist" skill raises their defense every time they're hurt to a max of +105%.
* WeaponSpecialization: Their skills strongly favor Lamps.

!! Mad Raptor
* {{Expy}}: The default portrait looks like [[VideoGame/DisgaeaD2ABrighterDarkness Xenolith.]]
* FragileSpeedster: Accurate and quick, but crumbles quickly.
* {{Narcissist}}: The fourth female voice.
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: All the female portraits specifically the fourth portrait.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: All the male portraits specifically the default portrait.
* WeaponSpecialization: Their skills strongly favor Crossbows.

!! Gothic Coppelia
* {{Ax Crazy}}: On of the abilities they can learn is the ability to get a gore shot more easily. This gives the impression they are going for the brutal kill.
* LittleBitBeastly: Though technically designed to be genderless, they all appear to be [[CatGirl Cat Girls]].
* NoBiologicalSex: There's at least one pact where having no gender is a requirement, and they're it. The first voice sounds like they're confused by the very concept ("...female? What's that?").
* WeaponSpecialization: Their skills strongly favor Hammers.

!! Demon Reaper
* {{Expy}}: The extra portrait is none other than Plenair.
* {{Little Miss Badass}}: Every design of the demon reaper is that of a little girl that will mutilate you.
* PainAndGain: One of their skills multiplies their attack by the number of limbs they've lost.
* SinisterScythe: Uses scythes that replace the puppet's hands ''and feet.''
* WeaponSpecialization: Their skills strongly favor Scythes.
