* NiceMeanAndInbetween: Kazuma is a rude AntiHero, Ayano is an aggressive {{Tsundere}} yet can be nice to others besides Kazuma, and Ren is a very polite NiceGuy.

The male protagonist of the series.

Born as Kazuma Kannagi, he is a former member of the Kannagi household. He was banished from the family by his father and changed his name to Kazuma Yagami after being defeated by Ayano during the successor ceremony for "Enraiha", his family's sacred sword, due to his inability to use Enjutsu.

Four years later, at the age of twenty two, he returns to Japan as the most powerful master of Wind Magic to have ever existed, possessing god-like powers. As a "Fūjutsushi" (Wind Technique Practitioner), Kazuma's powers are extensive and he is by far the most powerful character in the series.

In the series, he tries to avenge Tsui Ling's death because he blames himself for not protecting her. Towards the end of the series, he become aware of the fact that he loves Ayano and vows to protect her.
-----
* AntiHero: While he's mostly heroic at his core, Kazuma is very violent and tends to kill most of the antagonists (and severely injure many others along the way).
* BattleCouple: With Ayano. They're often forced by her father to team up during battle. Despite their [[BelligerentSexualTension differences]], they work well together and their feelings for each other are obvious.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Kazuma saves Misao because he was grateful that she saved him from some bullies when he was younger.
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Ayano. He likes to tease her for her reckless personality, causing her to yell at him and try to hit him (although Kazuma always dodges it). The attraction between them couldn't be more obvious.
* BigBrotherInstinct: One of his most obvious redeeming qualities is his protectiveness towards his younger brother Ren. In the first arc, he only agrees to work with the Kannagi family because Ren was kidnapped, driving him to team up with Ayano and go save Ren.
* BlackSheep: He's an outcast of the Kannagi family due to his inability to use Enjutsu. He's even called this verbatim in the first episode.
* BlowYouAway: He has a pact/contract with the spirit king of air, so he has a few more feats and tricks up his sleeve than other Wind Mages. Apart from being able to fly even while holding three people, Kazuma can also launch blasts of [[RazorWind wind that act as blades]] and manipulate wind spirits to create a barrier, protecting his body from physical harm or reflecting light in order to camouflage himself.
* BodyguardCrush: Ayano's father hires Kazuma as Ayano's bodyguard to keep the two together in hopes of pairing them off and Kazuma is actually smart enough to get what's happening. He does end up developing feelings for Ayano.
* BrutalHonesty: And Holy Mary, Mother of God, do we mean '''"Brutal"!''' He constantly makes harsh remarks about everything and everyone, particularly the Kannagis and their methods and, whether one likes it or not, a lot of what he says tends to have some truth to it.
* BullyMagnet: As a kid, he was regularly bullied and beaten up by other kids of the Kannagi clan due to his lack of fire magic.
* TheComicallySerious: Most of Kazuma's humor comes from his deadpan reaction to Ayano's {{Tsundere}} antics.
* CynicismCatalyst: Kazuma's failure to protect Tsui-Ling in the backstory led him to undergo TrainingFromHell and becoming a pretty brutal AntiHero.
* DeadpanSnarker: Kazuma has a very cold, sarcastic sense of humor. He's prone to snarking at people in general, but his favorite target is Ayano.
* DeclarationOfProtection: He promised Tsui-Ling to protect her, only to fail. He now has decided to protect Ayano.
* DisinheritedChild: After he lost to Ayano in the duel that decided the Kannagi family successor, Kazuma was disinherited and cast away by his parents.
* {{Flight}}: Can use his wind powers as transportation.
* TheGadfly: One of the things he likes about Ayano is how [[HairTriggerTemper easily she loses her temper]]. He loves causing Ayano trouble just to watch her entertaining reactions.
* GenreSavvy: He's well aware that his bodyguard job is nothing but a ploy of Juugo in order to get him and Ayano together to accomplish several of his goals (the main one being returning Kazuma to the family and being a full fledged ShipperOnDeck). Genre Savvy or not, he still falls for her anyway, ending the anime in an introspective DeclarationOfProtection for Ayano.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: When he reaches his full power, his eyes become "blue as the azure sky".
* HeartbrokenBadass: He became the most powerful wind magic user there is, but he's still haunted by his failure to save his first girlfriend.
* HeyYou: [[PlayingWithATrope Played with]]. He calls Genma "Old Man", but this is less out of disrespect and more because he doesn't think calling him "Father" is appropriate. Genma, for his part, doesn't care, saying that Kazuma can call him whatever he likes.
* ILetGwenStacyDie: His failure to protect Tsui-Ling motivates him to awaken his true powers to protect those around him.
* InterruptedSuicide: Shortly after Tsui Ling's death, Kazuma attempted to commit suicide, but was saved at the last moment by a traveling Taoist sennin.
* JerkassHasAPoint: When the [[spoiler: Fuga Clan]] is revealed to have been behind the murders of several Kannagis [[spoiler: and have also kidnapped Ren]], Kazuma states that the Kannagi family brought it upon themselves due to their [[FantasticRacism derisive treatment]] against Wind-Magic Practioners and other non Fire-Practioners. Juugo agrees completely.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's brutally honest, often demands money before he lifts a finger to help and always has a snarky comment ready at the expense of, well, pretty much everyone, but underneath his bad attitude, he's a good guy who cares about those close to him, mainly his younger brother Ren and his love interest Ayano.
* KissingCousins: He and Ayano are second cousins while forming the main couple of the series.
* LoveMakesYouCrazy: In the last arc of the anime, Kazuma meeting his dead girlfriend's murderer along with her clone causes him to briefly go insane and lose control of his powers. Ayano snaps him out of it.
* MistakenForMurderer: He's lured back to Japan to set one of these up. A powerful Wind Mage is killing Kunnagis, and he's a powerful Wind Mage with a motive to do just that.
* MouthToMouthForceFeeding: Early on, he gives Ayano medicine via a kiss.
* MyGreatestFailure: He has never forgiven himself for being unable to save his girlfriend Tsui-Ling from being used as a HumanSacrifice.
* NighInvulnerable: Kazuma uses a magical shield that can block or deflect most attacks. Conventional weapons especially can't even scratch him.
* NobleDemon: He plays the part of mercenary, extorts gold out of fairies, and likes to mess with Ayano, but beneath it all, Kazuma's a good guy.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: Given his personal resentment towards the entire clan, Kazuma only agrees to work for the Kannagi family because Ayano's father promises to pay him. He even charges for helping in his own younger brother's rescue.
* OppositesAttract: With Ayano. He's cool-headed, pragmatic and calculating, while she's impulsive, quick-tempered and overly emotional.
* PetTheDog: He visits his father at the hospital and tells him to take care of himself.
* PowerStereotypeFlip: Kazuma's stoic, collected and aloof personality is quite the opposite of what's usually expected from a user of the wind element.
* RapidfireFisticuffs: Kazuma usually fights using his powerful long-range magic but proves himself exceptionally capable in this tactic as well during his PummelDuel with Genma at the resort.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: When Kazuma is under the influence of great rage, it activates his black wind state. In this state, his eyes are crimson red.
* RedOniBlueOni: The cool and calm Blue Oni to Ayano's hot-tempered and impulsive Red Oni.
* SelfMadeMan: After he was banished from the Kannagi family, Kazuma was able to pave a way for himself and succeed at life, becoming a highly powerful wind mage.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: The Manly Man to Ren's Sensitive Guy. Kazuma is rude and masculine, in contrast to the gentle and somewhat effeminate Ren.
* ShedTheFamilyName: After his father disowned him and threw him out of the Kannagi family, Kazuma changed his surname to Yagami.
* ShockAndAwe: It has become apparent that he possibly has the ability to manipulate electricity (shown during episode 23 just before Ayano brings him back to his normal self using the crimson flame).
* SiblingYinYang: With Ren. Kazuma is blunt, arrogant, selfish and apathetic, while his younger brother Ren is soft-spoken, humble, kind and caring.
* TheStoic: He doesn't show strong emotions most of the time. Although, any mention of his dead girlfriend [[NotSoStoic makes his mask fall off]].
* SugarAndIcePersonality: He's an aloof and unemotional man, but does have a soft spot for his little brother Ren and his love interest Ayano.
* SuperPoweredEvilSide: [[spoiler:Subverted. If Ayano is correct in her analysis, he's actually ''less'' powerful in this state; a claim backed up by his attacks lacking their usual precision, has a lot more trouble with opponents he had previously Curb-Stomped, and an inability to access his full powers. Played straight in that he's basically a loose cannon and a danger to everyone around him like this.]]
* TakeAThirdOption: Whenever he's presented with a SadisticChoice, he goes for the sacrifice-free choice that he made up himself.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: He's tall, dark-haired and very handsome. [[TallDarkAndSnarky He also has a notable sarcastic streak.]]
* TheTease: He has lots of fun making flirtatious moves on Ayano just to make her go crazy from embarrassment. Some of his major teases include kissing her nose or neck, licking off the wine on her cheek, and [[FlirtatiousSmackOnTheAss slapping her butt]].
* {{Telepathy}}: His evil side is seen using mind-reading powers.
* TookALevelInBadass: He went from a weakling kid who was ostracized by his clan for not being able to use fire magic to the most powerful wind magic user in the world thanks to having made a contract with the Spirit King of the Wind.
* TraumaButton: Just hearing about someone planning to perform a HumanSacrifice, especially with his little brother [[MoralityPet Ren]], reminds him of [[MyGreatestFailure his greatest failure]] to save his girlfriend from being sacrificed to a demon.
* TroubledButCute: Kazuma has very strong "sexy bad boy" vibes, but he also has a lot of issues from being ostracized by the Kannagi family and failing to save his girlfriend in the past.
* TheUnapologetic: To the point that Kirika believes that he doesn't even know how to ''pronounce'' the word "Sorry."
* UnscrupulousHero: Kazuma is a highly selfish and apathetic person in general, rarely doing heroism for reasons that don't have any self-interest. He also has no issues with killing anyone who makes themselves his enemy. Despite that, he will go to hell and back to protect his loved ones and will ''never'' allow innocent lives to be sacrificed. Toned downed significantly in the anime, to the point where he's more of a PragmaticHero.
* WorfHadTheFlu: [[spoiler: A justified version with Kazuma vs. Ayano late in the series. Kazuma's evil persona is sufficiently less powerful than his norm that Ayano (who usually can't hold a candle to him) is finally able to win a bout. Kazuma even lampshades this when he begins returning to his senses.]]
* YouTasteDelicious: While Kazuma was pouring some fine wine, some of it splashed onto Ayano's face. The powerful wind mage decides not to let it go to waste and licks it off his partner's face.

The female protagonist of the series. Ayano is the successor to the Kannagi family's head. She holds Enraiha, the Kannagi's sacred sword, which she won by defeating Kazuma at the successor ceremony four years before the start of the story.
-----
* ActionGirl: She's a skilled fire magic user and swordswoman.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: She's attracted to the aloof AntiHero Kazuma.
* AncestralWeapon: Enraiha has been passed down to members of the Kannagi family for generations.
* ArrogantKungFuGirl: Her pride for her family and heritage is often the fuel for her recklessness, as she believes her family name and force alone would allow her to beat anyone.
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: Four years before the events of the series, Ayano defeated Kazuma in the Right of Inheritance Ceremony. With her victory, she was crowned the future head of the Kannagi family.
* BattleCouple: With Kazuma. They're often forced by her father to team up during battle. Despite their [[BelligerentSexualTension differences]], they work well together and their feelings for each other are obvious.
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Kazuma. His rude attitude and constant teasing drive her nuts. She tries to pretend there's no way she's falling for such an irritating jerk, but anyone can see the attraction between them.
* ButForMeItWasTuesday: Ayano defeated Kazuma [[CurbStompBattle with a single fire spell]] during the Inheritance Ceremony, which directly resulted in his parents disowning him. However, by the time Kazuma returns four years later, Ayano had forgotten all about him because their "fight" was so easy to her that she didn't find it worth remembering.
* ButtMonkey: Ayano is a frequent victim of slapstick and Kazuma's teasing.
* CannotSpitItOut: She just won't admit to anyone that she's attracted to Kazuma. Although, Kazuma is smart enough to tell how she feels.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Ayano flies into a towering rage when she sees Kazuma with another woman.
* ClothingDamage: In the fight with the first ArcVillain, and again in the first fight against Catherine, Ayano's clothes get ripped up and her underwear is left in full view.
* CoolBigSis: She acts as a caring older sister figure for her younger second cousin Ren.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: She has red eyes matching her red hair.
* CuteLittleFangs: Her fangs occasionally stick out when she's angry.
* DaddysGirl: She deeply loves and respects her father. In the light novels, she gets called out on it by her friends.
* ElementalHairColors: Ayano has red hair and is a user of fire magic as it's her family's affinity. She also has ElementalEyeColors with her red eyes since CurtainsMatchTheWindow.
* ElementalPersonalities: Being a prime user of fire abilities, Ayano has a brash and short-tempered personality that easily associates her with the element. {{Lampshaded|Trope}} by Kazuma, who thinks the Enjutsu fire powers are a good fit for someone with a hot temper like Ayano.
* FieryRedhead: Red hair for a hot-headed {{Tsundere}}. A perfect combination.
* FlamingSword: She wields Enraiha, her family's sacred sword that she uses to channel her fire powers.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: She snaps Kazuma out of his [[SuperPoweredEvilSide corrupted state]] in the last arc of the anime.
* HairTriggerTemper: She flies off the handle at the smallest provocation, making it too easy for Kazuma to annoy her endlessly.
* HeIsNotMyBoyfriend: She'll deny any insinuation that Kazuma is her boyfriend or that she wants that to be the case. She does a bad job trying to convince even herself that's true.
* HeroicBSOD: In the novels, after her friends shrink back from her in terror when she first demonstrates her power in front of them. She then gets enveloped by a puny slime monster that shouldn't have had a chance, and Kazuma has to bail her out and restore her confidence.
* HimeCut: She has long hair with even bangs and sidetails, to signify her status as the successor of the Kannagi family.
* HoldTheLine: In the first arc's BigBad boss fight, she has to keep him back while Kazuma charges up for an attack. He lets her get knocked around a little before releasing it, of course.
* HotBlooded: Her personality is the definition of hotheaded. She's frequently yelling and jumping into action with fervor.
* HumblePie: She gets knocked down a couple pegs in the first arc by Kazuma, who she could barely remember as "Guy I easily trounced during the successor ceremony." In fact, it works a little ''too'' well, to the point that she develops an InferioritySuperiorityComplex.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Ayano frequently calls Kazuma an idiot, but between her frequent poor decisions and one-track mind and Kazuma's very obvious intelligence, it's pretty clear who the ''real'' idiot is.
* IdiotHair: In one scene you can see Ayano putting a great deal of work into making sure she has one of these, including combing her hair a certain way and liberal amounts of hairspray.
* IdiotHero: Ayano's definitely not the brightest bulb in the box, which both Kirika and Catherine call her out for in episode 22. Constantly jumping to conclusions, refusing to admit when she's wrong even when all the evidence points against her, charging blindly into fights and not even realising how jealous she acts over Kazuma does not suggest a great deal of intelligence.
* IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight: With Kazuma in the last arc of the anime.
* IndirectKiss: Ayano drinks Kazuma's coffee while he's battling a Pandemonium player. The blush on her face before she does this makes her intention clear. Kazuma just gets annoyed because he still wanted to drink it.
* IndyPloy: She never plans her battles ahead, preferring to swing her FlamingSword around and see how that goes.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: As arrogant as she may act on the surface, the great gap between her power and Kazuma's is a massive blow to her self-esteem, which is especially shown when, after Kazuma promises to protect her, she takes it completely the wrong way and asks if he sees her as a helpless little girl who can't take care of herself.
* IntimateHealing: When Kazuma gives her medicine via a kiss.
* KissingCousins: She and Kazuma are second cousins while forming the main couple in the series.
* KnowNothingKnowItAll: Kazuma calls her a spoiled brat who can't admit when she's wrong, and it shows.
* LikeParentLikeSpouse: Ayano seems to feel attracted to men that remind her of her dad. Apparently, Ayano doesn't find the attractive qualities of her father in many men her own age.
* LimitedWardrobe: In the amusement park episode, Ayano takes her time picking between three identical outfits, which are all the school uniform she always wears. As a matter of fact, she's only seen wearing anything other than her uniform ''twice'' in the whole anime.
* MsFanservice: She has tons of {{Panty Shot}}s, two {{Furo Scene}}s, and gets constant ClothingDamage.
* MySuitIsAlsoSuper: Her regular outfit is a very expensively made school uniform that is immune to her fire powers.
* {{Ojou}}: She's the daughter and heiress of the Kannagi family's current family head.
* OppositesAttract: With Kazuma. She's impulsive, quick-tempered and overly emotional, while he's cool-headed, pragmatic and calculating.
* PlayingWithFire: Part and parcel of being a member of the Kannagi Family, Ayano uses fire magic.
* RedheadsAreRavishing: The redheaded Ayano is ''the'' MsFanservice of the series, being frequently shown in a state of undress. She has a mutual attraction with Kazuma, who kisses her red hair in the final episode of the anime.
* RedOniBlueOni: The hot-tempered and impulsive Red Oni to Kazuma's cool and calm Blue Oni.
* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack: Ayano wears her school uniform no matter the occasion, including when going to battle and the amusement park.
* SecondLove: Kazuma has never gotten over his first love Tsui-Ling and his failure to protect her. Once he falls in love with Ayano, he decides it's time to move on and protect his present, even if his lingering feelings for Tsui-Ling probably won't ever completely go away.
* {{Shorttank}}: The hot-headed, violent {{Tsundere}} female protagonist in an action series who has lots of BelligerentSexualTension with the male protagonist. Although, she doesn't wear a tank top nor sporty clothes because [[SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack her wardrobe seems to consist of school uniforms only]].
* TheoryTunnelvision: Ayano has a very hard time admitting when she's wrong no matter how much evidence says so, something Kazuma calls her out for.
* TownGirls: Ayano is a sword-wielding {{Tsundere}} with long hair and feminine interests (Neither). Her friends are the short-haired, tomboyish athlete Nanase (Butch) and the long-haired, girly non-fighter Yukari (Femme).
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Ayano's brash, rebellious, hot-tempered and unrefined, but she has a serious SweetTooth and seems to really like the colour pink, with it being the colour of both her pajamas and a dress she wears in one episode.
* {{Tsundere}}: A textbook example of a Harsh (Tsun) type. Ayano claims Kazuma is a jerk who she can't stand, but often blushes around him and tries to hold his hand at an amusement park. [[spoiler: It takes Kazuma pulling a temporary FaceHeelTurn for her to finally state her honest opinion of him, and even then [[StatusQuoIsGod she goes straight back to treating him like she always does as soon as everything's said and done]].]]
* TsurimeEyes: Her eyes slant upwards, which is a visual trait that identifies her as a hotheaded {{Tsundere}}.
* WoodenKatanasAreEvenBetter: She wields Enraiha, a wooden FlamingSword passed down the family line from the Spirit King of Fire.

Kazuma's younger brother. He looks up to Ayano and practically worships Kazuma, stating that one day he hopes to be as strong as him so he can protect everyone.
-----
* BadassAdorable: Ren is a very cute and sweet boy. He's also a very powerful fire magic user.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Despite his kind and soft-spoken nature, Ren is very brave and does not hesitate to help others when need be, and will gladly fight for his family and friends or when provoked or simply when it's necessary.
* BigBrotherWorship: Ren practically worships Kazuma, stating that one day he hopes to be as strong as him. Even though Kazuma was born with no fire powers, Ren doesn't care and still holds him in high regard.
* DeclarationOfProtection: He promises to protect Ayumi.
* DistressedDude: In the first arc, Ren gets kidnapped by Ryuuya Kazamaki, prompting Kazuma and Ayano to rescue him..
* TheDulcineaEffect: Ren is ready to turn against the entire Tsuwabuki family in order to protect a girl he just met, as he won't allow them to turn her into a HumanSacrifice.
* TheGlomp: In his introduction, Ren greets Ayano with a hug when she gets home and excitedly tells her the news about Kazuma coming back.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: He is young and innocent boy with blond hair.
* HeroicResolve: When he learns that protecting Ayumi means becoming the enemy of the entire Tsuwabuki family, Ren still decides to save Ayumi from the family's sacrificial ritual.
* ILetGwenStacyDie: [[spoiler:Ren does manage to save Ayumi from being sacrificed in the Tsuwabuki family's ritual, but she still dies after she sacrifices her short lifespan to defeat Zenon. He regrets Ayumi's death for the rest of the series.]]
* LavaMagicIsFire: He can generate and control magma through Enjutsu, as seen when he turns sand into magma during his fight with Yuuji Tsuwabuki.
* LetsGetDangerous: Ren is a young boy who doesn't look anywhere near as competent of a fighter as Kazuma and Ayano, but he's a skilled magic user in his own right.
* LoveAtFirstSight: He falls in love with Ayumi after only one meeting.
* MoralityPet: To Kazuma. Ren is the only member of the Kannagi family who Kazuma treats kindly and feels protective of.
* NiceGuy: He's a very polite, kindhearted, and good-natured boy.
* NotSoWeak: Ren is usually very soft-spoken and meek. However, he will never stand still if he sees someone, especially a loved one, being hurt in front of him.
* PlayingWithFire: He's a master of Enjutsu fire magic like the rest of the Kannagi family. Ren's power is the Golden Flame, which has the greatest purification effect among all fire magic.
* ProneToTears: He's very sensitive and cries easily when upset.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: The Sensitive Guy to Kazuma's Manly Man. Ren is gentle and somewhat effeminate, in contrast to the rude and masculine Kazuma.
* SiblingYinYang: With Kazuma. Ren is soft-spoken, humble, kind and caring, while his older brother Kazuma is blunt, arrogant, selfish and apathetic.
* TakeAThirdOption: As opposed to just going with it, as the Tsuwabaki family does.
* TaremeEyes: The sweet-tempered Ren's eyes are big and droopy, giving him a gentler expression than Kazuma's and Ayano's TsurimeEyes.

Ren and Kazuma's strict father. Though he is responsible for banishing Kazuma from the Kannagi family, he only wanted his son to find his own path in life.

-----
* BadassLongcoat: He wears a black longcoat and is considered as the most powerful Enjutsushi in the Kannagi family.
* CruelToBeKind: Kazuma's complete lack of ability with Enjutsu made him a pariah among the Kannagi, but as Genma's son he would never have been allowed to live his own life. Genma banished Kazuma because he was confident his son could survive and find his own path.
* IHaveNoSon: Since he has disinherited Kazuma, he refuses to acknowledge him as his son.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: The true reason he expelled Kazuma from the family is because he wanted his son to find his own path, but he has never admit it.
* PerpetualFrowner: He's almost always scowling.
