Tropes related to the characters from the VisualNovel series, ''VisualNovel/ItLives''. The series consists of two books: ''It Lives In The Woods'' and ''It Lives Beneath''.

%%Note: Refer to the Main Characters by their default names to avoid confusion between books, with "Devon" for the ''It Lives in the Woods'' protagonist, and "Harper" for ''It Lives Beneath''.

!!Tropes for several characters in both games
* {{Foil}}: The main characters of ''It Lives In The Woods'' and ''It Lives Beneath'' are set up as such. The former group consists of ChildhoodFriends who split apart ten years ago and become friends once again because of Redfield's involvement. The latter group consists of complete strangers who gradually learn to trust one another to face the Lake Ghost.
* LoveInterests: In each game, you can date love interests and can freely date multiple of them at once. Each love interest is available regardless of your player's gender (the playable character's gender is player-selected in both games).
** In ''It Lives In The Woods'', your love interests are Lucas, Andy, Ava, Stacy and Connor. Regardless of your player's gender, you can date any of them (though you cannot date both Stacy and Connor, given that they are siblings).
** The love interests for ''It Lives Beneath'' are Tom, Imogen, Parker, and Danni.

[[folder:Main Characters]]
!!General Tropes for the group
* TheBusCameBack: The main group [[spoiler: minus Devon/Noah]] appear in Chapter 5 of ''Beneath'' depending on who survives the end of the game.
* ChildhoodFriends: Devon, Jane, Lily, Ava, Andy, Stacy, Lucas, Dan, and Noah used to play with Redfield frequently in the woods until Jane died.
* ImNotAfraidOfYou: Chapter 11 has the group tell Mr. Red even with all of his demonic powers and moss monsters attack that they're no longer scared of him.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: The group is composed of AudienceSurrogate (Devon), the StudentCouncilPresident (Lucas), the fat NiceGirl (Lily), the {{Goth}} (Ava), the loner (Noah), a cheerleader (Stacy), the transgender LovableJock (Andy), and the TroubledButCute football star with PTSD (Dan). The only thing they all have in common is their knowledge of Redfield's existence.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: Since Jane's death at Mr. Red's hands when the group were kids, they split apart until the story starts. When that point is established, Devon is still in friendly terms with all of them, but there's still friction between most of the group.

!!Main Character/Devon
The protagonist of ''It Lives in the Woods'', who encountered a supernatural entity with a few friends ten years ago.
----
* AudienceSurrogate: The reader gets all the background information from Devon's perspective.
* ChainsawGood: Chapter 11 allows Devon to buy a pole saw for the battle against Mr. Red.
* DyingAlone: [[spoiler: This can be their fate if everyone survives and you choose to save Noah/let Noah kill you]].
* ForgottenFallenFriend: [[spoiler:If Devon becomes the new Redfield, none of their friends eulogize them during the memorial service in Chapter 16. The only ones to do so are Connor, and Tom in ''It Lives Beneath''.]]
* HelloInsertNameHere: Name, race, and gender can be chosen by the player. The default name is “Devon”.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: Devon can be the one to sacrifice his/her life to be the new Mr. Red.]]
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: One of the flashbacks has the option for Child!Devon to either be careful about Redfield or to straight up declare the unconditional trust in him.
* ICallItVera: Buying the barbed wire baseball bat allows you to name it, although its default name is "Candy".
* ILetGwenStacyDie: They feel very guilty about Jane’s death over their unfulfilled promise to protect her no matter what.
* InTheHood: Devon takes to wearing a black hoodie during ''It Lives Beneath'', should s/he survive. It's not to look mysterious or anything, s/he just got a bad haircut.
* InvisibleParents: Devon's parents are overseas for the duration of the game's first fifteen chapters; in fact, they are only mentioned at all twice. One is in the first chapter when Devon reveals to Cid that his/her parents are overseas, and the second time is the [[spoiler:day after Cody's death when Devon reveals that his/her mom is taking the news hard]].
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Devon's confrontation with Redfield results in the latter turning against the group, such as disrupting next day's basketball match with a SpiderSwarm, [[spoiler:depriving Ava from her telekinesis, exposing Stacy's dysfunctional family life to the school, and getting Lucas suspended by filling his locker with focus pills]].
* PerkyGoth: Devon can choose the gothic look as premium choices and still be friendly and supportive of their friends.
* SecretKeeper: [[spoiler:If Noah becomes Redfield, Devon is the only one who knows this and shows Harper and Tom.]]
* SoleSurvivor: [[spoiler: They can be this if everyone dies and you choose to let Noah sacrifice himself.]] It can also overlap with FinalGirl if female.
* VirtualPaperDoll: The player can customize Devon in any style available, with the {{goth}} looks as the only premium choice.
* WouldHitAGirl: Regardless of their gender, Devon has the option to punch Jocelyn in Chapter 8.

!!Lucas Thomas
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilitwlucas.jpg]]
One of Devon's childhood friends and the Class President of Westchester High.
----
* AmbiguouslyBrown: His ethnicity isn't exactly clear. His mother's name is Amala, which is of Indian origin, but his last name is obviously of English origin.
* DescentIntoAddiction: Downplayed. Lucas developed addiction to focus medication for his studies and forged a medical prescription from his mother's desk to obtain them. Mr. Cooper found out by noticing his symptoms and was attacked by Redfield before he could report it. Devon makes Lucas throw away the medications before he could get worse.
* EducationMama: He has a controlling mother that made him enroll in different extracurricular activities to apply for a good college.
* HiddenDepths: He enjoys beatboxing as a hobby.
* NonActionGuy: He joins Lily in reciting the spell needed to seal Mr. Red.
* PungeonMaster: In Chapter 4, his announcement warning his fellow students of rising bear sightings is full of bear puns.
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: To reinforce his role as the StraightMan in the group and overachiever.
* StudentCouncilPresident: Lucas is one of these and the stress of balancing so much work is getting to him. Among many other things he is obligated to do as extra curriculars, he is the most charismatic and caring person in the school.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: He's described as such from Devon's point of view.
* WellDoneSonGuy: In Chapter 6, the reason he tries to cram so much into his high school life is because he believes his parents are disappointed in him for not being up to their level compared to when they were his age.

!!Ava Cunningham
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilitwava.jpg]]
One of Devon's childhood friends and the daughter of the local sheriff.
----
* CurseCutShort: She said, "Oh f--" during the blackout at pep rally.
* CutenessProximity: Big tough goth girl Ava goes into this when she, Lucas and Devon find a black kitten in an alley in Chapter 6.
* DeadpanSnarker: She's very sarcastic, especially to the bullies.
* DemonicPossession: In Chapter 8, Redfield possessed her into [[spoiler:[[PsychicStrangle choking Jocelyn with her telekinesis]]]] for attacking her.
* EmbarrassingMiddleName: Her middle name is Dolores, which she isn't proud of.
* {{Goth}}: She is a big supernatural fan and keeps the bullies away with both her looks and her knowledge of hexes.
* GothGirlsKnowMagic: Extremely goth, and with an interest in witchcraft and the occult.
* HiddenWeapons: If you bring Ava with you to the woods in Chapter 3, she fights against the creatures with a knife. Noah is quite concerned how she hid one in her boot to school.
* MindOverMatter: [[spoiler:Ava develops telekinesis in Chapter 4. By Chapter 7, she has some measure of control and finesse over it. She loses it in Chapter 9.]]
* NightmareFetishist: She’s quite eager to go in the scary woods at night in Chapter 2. In a flashback, she is shown to be the only one eager to meet Redfield, despite being obviously dangerous. In Chapter 11 at Cora’s house, she wants to have Cora’s house as hers.
** In Chapter 11, she loves having a moss monster as a pet in a premium choice.
** In Chapter 5 of ''Beneath,'' she considers the concept of a monster bear cool. She also asks Harper for details on the skeleton ghost at the bottom of the lake, if it's just bones or has remaining tissue, just for her own amusement.
* OptionalPartyMember: A premium option in Chapter 2 allows Devon to recruit her for the next chapter.
* SassyBlackWoman: She's definitely this, especially as a goth.
* TeachersPet: Chapter 11 has Noah call her this when she’s straight to the point in not only how to seal the Power, but also Cora liking her.
* TokenMinority: She is the only African American in the group.

!!Lily Ortiz
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilitwlily.jpg]]
An overweight girl who is one of Devon's childhood friends.
----
* AmicableExes: [[spoiler:Her relationship with Britney can be played as such if they broke up in Chapter 12.]]
* GenreMashup: In Chapter 5 of ''Beneath,'' her game, "Pixie Girls," is described as "a sort of a visual novel mixed with ''Franchise/{{Touhou|Project}}''-style bullethell levels." Harper can have no idea what the hell any of that means.
* LipstickLesbian: Lily is very femme, always wearing dresses and bows in her hair.
* LoveMartyr: Despite Britney being obviously mean even to her face, she still tries to be friendly and defends her, despite her friends worrying that Britney is going to hurt her eventually. When they theorize that Redfield might be controlling Britney to be nicer to Lily, she refuses to believe this, claiming Britney only became bad because of Jocelyn and Cody.
* NiceGirl: She tries to greet Britney despite being bullied by her gang constantly.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: In Chapter 2, she refuses to join Devon and Noah to find Dan in the woods, believing that it's too dangerous.
* TheSmartGirl: According to Devon, she has a GPA of 4.5 and her only issue with Art as a subject is that the evaluation is not objective. Moreover, she also speculates the connection between Dan's discovery in the woods and Ava using her telekinesis to slam Jocelyn's head with a locker door.
* StraightGay: She has a crush on Britney.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: According to Lily's letter to Britney, they used to be close until Britney changed. Britney uses the letter to humilliate Lily by claiming she's a StalkerWithACrush.
* WhatTheHellHero: She scolds Ava for [[spoiler:choking and nearly killing Jocelyn with her telekinesis]].

!!Noah Marshall
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilitwnoah.jpg]]
One of Devon's childhood friends whose sister Jane died ten years prior to the events of the story.
----
* AngstySurvivingTwin: Chapter 8 reveals that he and Jane [[HalfIdenticalTwins are twins]].
* BigBrotherInstinct: He is highly protective of Jane.
* DyingAlone: [[spoiler: This can be his fate if everyone survives and you choose to let Noah sacrifice himself]].
* FugitiveArc: If Noah survives, [[spoiler:he becomes a fugitive on the run.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: He can be the one to take Jane’s place as Mr. Red in Chapter 15.]]
* ILetGwenStacyDie: He feels a lot of guilt and resentment over his sister Jane's death and blames the group for not caring enough for what happened to her.
** As is mentioned above he is civil towards Devon, but even they didn’t want to sit next to Noah due to what happened.
* LoveMartyr: [[spoiler:Ultimately, everything Noah did he did because he loved his sister and couldn't stand to see her suffering, even if she was hurting people.]]
* PoorCommunicationKills: Noah was the one who figured out what actually needed to be done to seal Redfield. The problem is, he didn't tell the gang until they actually had to do it, [[WhatTheHellHero with predictable reactions.]]
* ProperlyParanoid: He is the most nervous and paranoid from the group, which is justified, given that his sister died because of Redfield.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: In Chapter 7, he walks away after Britney decides to play "Are you scared?" because Jane was killed while playing it.
* SecretKeeper: [[spoiler:If he survives and Devon becomes Redfield, Noah is the only one who knows this and shows Harper and Tom.]]
* SoleSurvivor: [[spoiler: Noah can be this if everyone dies, including Devon. If you start Book 2 without completing the previous one, he becomes this by default]].
* TheUnfavorite: Ever since Jane’s death, his mother has said to his face she hates him and [[YouShouldHaveDiedInstead wants him dead instead of Jane]].
* UnwittingPawn: This is what he [[spoiler:became in Chapters 14 and 15; he genuinely believed that if he followed Jane/Redfield's instructions, he would be able to bring Jane back, but he had no idea that he was placing himself and all of his friends in mortal danger and possibly killing them]].
* WorkingClassHero: Unlike the others who are implied to be upper middle class, he comes from a household with a lower tax bracket.

!!Stacy Green
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilitwstacy.jpg]]
One of Devon's childhood friends, a cheerleader of Westchester High, and the daughter of Westchester's mayor.
----
* BigScrewedUpFamily: Her parents fight all the time and are having affairs on each other.
* {{Blackmail}}: She was a victim of this because Britney tricked her into revealing all of her family's secrets. In exchange of never releasing that video, Stacy had to be part of Britney's posse and buy her everything she wants. In Chapter 5, she gets to turn the tables on Britney when a vine monster brings Stacy Britney's bag, allowing her to delete the video and also have proof of Britney insulting the rest of the team.
* CallingTheOldManOut: Devon can encourage her to do this to her mother for treating her as merely the Mayor's daughter in Chapter 13, boosting her nerve as a result.
* CrazyPrepared: Related to the above trope, she also deletes the video from Britney's cloud server and makes a copy of all the conversations where Britney trashed most of her "friends".
* DefiantToTheEnd: [[spoiler:While most of her friends plead for their lives when Redfield successfully kills them, she remains indignant towards Jane.]]
* TheDogBitesBack: After Redfield helps her get Britney's phone, instead of returning it to her, Stacy decides to let Britney have a taste of her own medicine and blackmail her back.
* ForcedIntoEvil: She tells Devon that Britney is blackmailing her into being part of her posse and bully her targets. Stacy has to pretend to drag Devon to a dumpster so they can properly talk.
* HandbagOfHurt: In Chapter 11, she fills her purse with heavy rocks as a makeshift weapon against the vine creatures.
* TheKlutz: Subverted. Stacy is shown to be very skilled at flips, but she gets intimidated by Britney, which makes her trip in the middle of a routine, and prompts the bullies to call her this. She later explains to Devon that one of Britney's rules is to never outshine her.
* MySisterIsOffLimits: Averted. She has no problem with Devon dating her brother under the condition that she won't date Devon if he/she kisses him. Likewise, kissing Stacy makes Connor ineligible as a LoveInterest.
* NeckSnap: [[spoiler:Jane kills her this way if she fails a nerve check during an "Are you scared?" game.]]
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere:
** In Chapter 2, she refuses to join Devon and Noah to find Dan in the woods, saying that this matter is best handled by professional adults.
** In Chapter 7, she walks away after Britney decides to play "Are you scared?" because Jane was killed while playing it.

!!Andy Kang
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilitwandy.jpg]]
One of Devon's childhood friends and a member of the school basketball team the Westchester Wolves.
----
* AppealToForce: He is shown using force or suggesting it more often than Devon's other friends.
* AppropriatedAppellation: While "Triple Threat" was originally coined to make fun of Andy for being short, trans, and Asian, he'll triumphantly shout "We got your Triple Threat right here!" if he, Devon, and Stacy do a good job taking down vine monsters [[spoiler:during the sealing ritual]].
* TheBigGuy: If he’s brought to the woods in Chapter 3, he first shows off his strength by powerlifting a bag of cement (or Devon) in the hardware store, then fights the vine monsters barehanded.
* BittersweetEnding: [[spoiler:If he survives the showdown against Redfield in Chapter 15, the next chapter reveals that he repeats Senior year in high school after being put on medical leave for his leg injuries. Even after resuming his studies, he still struggles with his injuries. The silver lining is that he has become basketball captain, and Ben no longer antagonizes him.]]
* CrowbarCombatant: He uses one in the fight against Mr. Red in Chapter 11.
* DistressedDude: [[spoiler:The vine monsters kidnapped him at the end of Chapter 12.]]
* GirlishPigtails: Andy had these during his childhood.
* HeightAngst: The third part of the “triple threat” crack: he’s short.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: He and Tom were very close friends, even before Andy's change. They never show romantic attraction to each other, despite both being bisexual.
* InSeriesNickname: After he contributes to the team's victory, the school started calling him "King Kang".
* JerkJock: During the basketball game in Chapter 9, he can act like one of these saying he’s carrying the team.
* LovableJock: Andy is a decent guy and wants to demonstrate that he made the basketball team by his hard work alone, despite people at school dismissing his presence as the token. He finally gets his well-deserved recognition in the first basketball game of the school, when he contributes to his team's victory.
* OptionalPartyMember: A premium option in Chapter 2 allows Devon to recruit him for the next chapter.
* PintSizedPowerHouse: Short but really strong.
* TransTribulations: Bullied and excluded on his basketball team for being short, Asian, and trans. Ben explicitly says that he's there as a PR move and won't actually get to play much, if at all. Lucas accidentally [[PronounTrouble misgenders]] him in Chapter 2. When he first cut his hair short, the next day at school was "hell," with both the kids and the grown-ups disapproving of him.
* TwoferTokenMinority: He is Asian and transgender. This, on top of his shortness, is why some mean students (including Cody) call him "triple threat".
** Ben, the {{Jerkass}} basketball team captain explicitly tells him he was put on the team as an "affirmative action hire" and it would be good for team pictures.
* WorthyOpponent: To Anderton High's basketball team. [[spoiler:If he dies, its members chant "King Kang" with Tom during the memorial service.]]

!!Daniel "Dan" Pierce
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilitwdan.jpg]]
One of Devon's old friends and a football star at Westchester High.
----
* CassandraTruth: [[spoiler:During an "Are you scared?" game in Chapter 15, Jane exploits his fear of being seen as crazy in case he tells people his childhood experiences.]]
* ConvenientComa: After Noah and Devon rescue him from the woods, he falls into a coma for the rest of the book, unable to explain why he went into the woods and how Redfield got loose. The gang can only find out about his motivations through his texts (via premium option), and Redfield uses his unconcious body to posses him.
* DemonicPossession: The gang discovers that Redfield possessed Dan at the hospital while he’s still in a coma.
* DistressedDude: The plot gets into motion when he sends messages to the group to rescue him from the woods.
* LovableJock: He is one of the most popular guys at school for being a football star and a NiceGuy to people around him.
* TheShrink: If he survives, in ''Beneath'' he reveals that he is majoring in Grief Counseling, giving a free therapy session to Harper, after learning about their parents.
* StepfordSmiler: According to Stacy, he hides all of his stresses from the rest of the school because when you’re a football star, “you’re not allowed to have feelings.”
* TroubledButCute: He appeared to be the typical popular jock and still close friends with Stacy, but his chat history reveals that he suffered from PTSD from his previous encounter with Redfield and was getting help from a therapist.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Bullies]]
!!Britney
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilitwbritney.jpg]]
The captain of Westchester High's cheerleading squad, she and her friends use her position to bully other students in the school.
----
* AlphaBitch: Head of the cheerleader squad and main bully who targets Devon, Lily, and Stacy.
* AmbiguouslyBi[=/=]AmbiguouslyGay: While she has been mentioned to have gone out with guys before, she also kissed Lily in middle school and asks her to be her date to Homecoming.
** It’s clear she’s attracted to Lily, but what’s not is whether she’s actually attracted to guys, just did what was expected or used boys for status, or is in a IfItsYouItsOkay situation with Lily.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: Even more so than Lucas because her last name isn't revealed and there's no mention of her parents' names.
* AmicableExes: [[spoiler:Her relationship with Lily can be played as such if they broke up in Chapter 12.]]
* BeautyIsBad: She is the meanest and cruelest person in the school, in contrast with her good looks and status as cheer captain.
* BecomingTheMask: [[spoiler:She was pretending to be nice to Lily because she was suffering from headaches that go away if she's around Lily. Over time, however, she genuinely realizes that she misses being around Lily to the point of not going through her original plan to humiliate her during homecoming.]]
* {{Blackmail}}: She has been keeping Stacy under her foot by keeping a recording of her spilling all her family secrets.
* BlackmailBackfire: Everything was going smoothly for her until Redfield sent monsters to give her cellphone to Stacy, turning the tables. Not only Stacy got to delete her video, but also found all the conversations where she and Jocelyn trashed the whole school.
* BrokenPedestal: Lily finally realizes Britney is a bad person in Chapter 10, when she mocks Stacy after her video gets screened in everybody's phones.
* EasilyForgiven: [[spoiler: Played straight or averted once Lily discovers her original intention to humiliate her during homecoming.]]
* FalseFriend: To Stacy. During Britney's birthday party, she recorded her conversation with Stacy, who revealed how dysfunctional her family was to Britney, and used it as blackmail material to one-up on Stacy.
* GirlishPigtails: A premium option in Chapter 7 has Devon and Stacy look into Britney's eighth grade yearbook, where she had this and PubescentBraces.
* PubescentBraces: A premium option in Chapter 7 has Devon and Stacy look into Britney's eighth grade yearbook, where she had this and GirlishPigtails.
* ReformedBully: By Chapter 16, she is starting to act nicely to other people.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: In the same scene she can go from insulting Devon and the gang, to be sweet and nice towards Lily, which everyone but Lily finds suspicious.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: Zig-zagged. According to Lily's letter to Britney, the latter was nicer during middle school and braided Lily's hair for the middle school dance. However, Lily also mentioned that Britney got into fights and committed petty crimes. Instead of acknowledging Britney’s abuse, she instead blames Jocelyn and Cody as her ToxicFriendInfluence.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: She is highly popular in Westchester High, even though calling her a villain is a bit of a stretch.

!!Jocelyn Wu
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilitwjocelyn.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:300:[[labelnote:Click for appearance in ''It Lives Beneath'']]https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilbjocelyn.jpg[[/labelnote]]]]
One of Britney's friends who bully other students of Westchester High.
----
%% * AnnoyingLaugh: Chapter 7 shows that she has one of these.
* AsianAirhead: Chapter 8 reveals that her last name is Wu, a Chinese last name. Considering her low intelligence, she fits the trope quite well.
* BetaBitch: She just follows Britney along but lacks both personality and intelligence.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: She may be a dimwit, but her physical prowess shows what she would do if she is triggered enough.
* BrainlessBeauty: Unlike Britney, she doesn’t have sass to back up her popular status, she’s LiteralMinded and her insults are pretty obvious.
* TheBrute: Among Britney's posse, she is the most enthusiastic to inflict physical abuse, and often joins Cody in physically hurting others, even doing it herself to Ava. Chapter 8 shows that she is stronger than ''[[TheBigGuy Andy]]''.
* DumbMuscle: Dimwitted yet strong enough to grab Ava with one hand and easily push aside two people restraining her (including a fellow athlete, no less).
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Jocelyn displays what seems to be very real grief after [[spoiler:Cody's death, and describes him as her "best friend."]]
* EyeScream: Her appearance in TheStinger of “Beneath” shows that her left eye is now white, meaning it got damaged during the prom attack.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:In Chapter 13, she flips over a table as a makeshift barricade against the vine monsters, allowing everyone else to escape while she is subsequently devoured by the vine monsters. A premium scene in Chapter 14 reveals she survived, albeit severely injured.]]
* HugeSchoolGirl: She is taller than Ava and very physically strong.
* LameComeback: All her attempts to make fun of others fall flat whenever she tries to give a lame nickname (like trying to call Ava “Ava the Witch”, to Cody’s annoyance). She is the only one who laughs at her own insults.
* ReformedBully: Implied. In the last chapter, Tom mentioned talking to her briefly and said she has gotten better. If Lucas survived, he said that what she did during Homecoming saved many lives, and that can't be ignored.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: She beats up Ava in Chapter 8, blaming her for [[spoiler: Cody's death.]]
* ScarsAreForever: In TheStinger of “Beneath”, it's shown she now has three jagged scars over the left side of her face.
* SingleGirlSeeksMostPopularGuy: She first threatens Ava to stay away from Dan. In Chapter 7, she is only groveling to Andy after he won the game.
* VillainousValor: Displays legitimate courage when [[spoiler:Redfield's monsters attack homecoming]] and ends up helping to save her classmates.

!!Cody
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilitwcody.jpg]]
One of Britney's friends who bully other students of Westchester High.
----
* AssholeVictim: [[spoiler:Outside of the horrible nature of his death, it’s still hard to feel sorry for him after all the abuse he inflicted on others.]]
* BackFromTheDead: In a way. [[spoiler: In Chapter 11, a form of him is summoned by Mr. Red to keep the group from sealing him away. Mr. Red then possesses his body, becoming a golem.]]
* TheBrute: Slightly less enthusiastic to inflict physical abuse than Jocelyn, but still does it enough to lower Devon and Lily's nerves.
* ForgottenFallenFriend: [[spoiler:The only person upset about his death was Jocelyn, and aside from Mr. Red taking his form in Chapter 11, he was never seen nor mentioned again afterwards, not even in the memorial at Chapter 16.]]
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler: He’s found impaled on the tree outside of Devon’s house at the end of Chapter 7.]]
* TheOneGuy: The only male member of Britney's posse.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: Compared to the other bullies, Cody is given very little characterization beyond just being a highly aggressive {{Jerkass}} causing problems for Devon and his friends.
* WouldHitAGirl: On top of physically threatening Lily, Cody has no qualms with punching Devon if Devon is female.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Redfield (A.K.A. "Mr. Red")]]
!!All incarnations
* TheBeastmaster: He can control animals to do his bidding, such as sending a murder of crows to attack Cody and Jocelyn, a bear to attack Ben, a snake to bite Mr. Cooper, a skeletal dog to snatch Britney's bag and give it to Stacy, and a SpiderSwarm to disrupt a basketball match.
* BlowYouAway: He can create winds strong enough to knock a person off their feet. [[spoiler:He can even suffocate Dan to death by sucking the oxygen from his lungs.]]
* {{Expy}}: He shares some similarities with [[Literature/{{It}} Pennywise the Dancing Clown.]]
* FauxAffablyEvil: The group conclude that Redfield tried to get in their good graces by dealing with their troubles, like sending the crows to save Lily and Devon from the bullies, sending a bear to maul Ben for mistreating Andy, putting a snake in Mr. Cooper's desk when he was about to report Lucas for consuming study drugs, and getting Britney's phone for Stacy. They also speculate about Redfield mind controlling Britney to be nicer to Lily.
* InSeriesNickname: The gang used to call him “Mr. Red”. They still use the nickname occasionally.
* NightmareFace: When his true form is finally revealed in Chapter 8, he is shown with a skeletal face, sharp teeth, and flames billowing from his eyes, mouth, and spots on his skin when angry (Only seen when it was [[spoiler:Jane]] but it's implied that all of its incarnations can have this face).

* WasOnceAMan: [[spoiler:According to Cora Pritchard, the current incarnation of Redfield is implied to be an acquaintance of hers who wanted more power from the supernatural energy that gives people powers that he ends up fused with it. 246** [[spoiler:The ending of Chapter 14 reveals that the current Redfield is actually Noah's sister Jane.]]

* BigBad: [[spoiler:She is the one who haunts the main characters, and responsible of the mysterious disappearances and comas in town, as she took the place of Douglas Redfield after her death]].
* PsychopathicManchild: Redfield is a mysterious entity that can go from playful and shy to psychopathic murderer in a heartbeat.
** Happens again in Chapter 8 when Devon says to stop doing what [[spoiler:she]]'s doing, forcing [[spoiler:her]] to reveal [[spoiler:her]] true demonic form!

Noah's late sister who encountered Redfield with Devon ten years ago.
----

* HalfIdenticalTwins: She and Noah are twins.
* KillTheCutie: She was the most innocent of the gang and genuinely liked Mr. Red. Then he killed her violently while playing "Are you scared?"
* TheLostLenore: Her death still haunts Devon and Noah after many years.
* NeckSnap: Redfield killed her by breaking her neck when playing a game called "Are you scared?"
* PosthumousCharacter: She is dead before the story begins and Noah is convinced that she got killed by Redfield.

----
* CanineCompanion: A premium option allows Hilda to serve as this to Devon while Cid goes out of town.
* EvilDetectingDog: If you have Hilda when you meet Mr. Red in Chapter 8, she snarls at his presence.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: Cid is Devon’s neighbor and friend of the family, checking up on Devon while their parents are overseas.
* OptionalPartyMember: Hilda only stays with Devon via premium option.
* PutOnABus[=/=]WeHardlyKnewYe: Cid goes out of town in Chapter 4, leaving Hilda in a local kennel or under Devon's care. 296* BigDamnHeroes: In Chapter 13, he rescues the group when they were being attacked by vine monsters outside the school and gets injured in the process.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: He has blonde hair and is friendly towards his sister's old friends.

!!Ben
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilitwben.jpg]]
The captain of the basketball team.
----
* BitchInSheepsClothing: His first appearance showcases him as a charismatic leader. He keeps pretending to be nice until Andy asks him to talk to the coach on his behalf, to which he responds with a condescending "maybe" about it, flat out admits to his face that he's just in the team for public relations, and can't wait for him to quit.
* EveryoneHasStandards: While he clearly looks down on Andy, he never actually misgenders him.
* GameBreakingInjury: In Chapter 4, a bear broke his arm, preventing him from playing in the first basketball game.
* JerkJock: He feels that Stacy is too boring for him. He also tells Andy the only reason he's on the team is as an “affirmative action hire”.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Right after he belittles Andy, he gets mauled by a bear.
* ManipulativeBastard: He allowed Andy to join the basketball team as a publicity stunt to make the team look good on pictures, then excluded him and Tom from practicing other basketball moves besides passing.
* ReformedBully: In Chapter 16, he is much nicer towards Andy if the latter survives. Of course, you still have the option of tossing a basketball to his face, though he takes it with a smile.

[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilitwmrcooper.jpg]]
A teacher at Westchester High.
----
* ConvenientComa: He miraculously survived a snake attack, but remains in a coma with low chances of recovering anytime soon. Since the Principal doesn't know why Mr. Cooper wanted to meet with Lucas' parents before he got attacked, Lucas can either lie or play dumb.
* DisproportionateRetribution: He was only doing his job when he had to report Lucas for using study drugs, which results in Redfield placing a snake in his desk. Then again, Redfield was certainly not acting with Lucas' notification (much less sanction) when he attacked Mr. Cooper.
* {{Irony}}: His sweater has a snake, and he got bitten by a snake.
* SternTeacher: Despite applauding Lucas for his impeccable record, he immediately notices that he is using study drugs and he has to report him to his parents and the Principal. This alone prompts Redfield to attack him.

!!Mayor Green
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilitwmayorgreen.jpg]]
Stacy and Connor's mother and the mayor of Westchester.

* HappyMarriageCharade: She and her husband hate each other, yet maintain their public image as a happy couple for her mayoral election campaign.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: She resembles Hillary Clinton, and Devon can even call her "Off-Brand Hillary Clinton".
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Despite her lack of awareness of Redfield, she still cares about Westchester’s residents, such as holding an announcement on bear sightings and [[spoiler:searching for Noah should the latter survive the showdown against Redfield]].
* UnnamedParent: Her first name is unknown.

The author of a children's book the group read as children.

* InSeriesNickname: She's colloquially known as "Pritch the Witch".
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Devon can describe her this way [[spoiler:during the eulogy]].
* PetMonstrosity: She keeps a moss creature as a pet. A premium option allows you to recruit it, with its default name being "Maurice".
* SacrificialLion: [[spoiler:Was killed by Redfield to signify that the ritual failed]].
* ScrewPolitenessImASenior: She’s old and quite sarcastic with her remarks to the kids.
* ShroudedInMyth: She is one of these with different rumors the kids have heard about her. Andy heard from his cousin that Cora’s face is disfigured from acid thrown at her. 354----

* CassandraTruth: Chapter 2 allows them to outright say it was a monster that dragged Kyle down into the lake, but nobody believes them.
* CombatPragmatist: Willing to do the best thing in a fight, even if it’s not the most heroic option, such as [[EyeScream clawing an attacking cultist in the eyes]].
* DisappearedDad: Harper's father walked out of the family when they were seven.
* DyingAlone: Unlike their friends, who can die in plain view of the group, [[spoiler:Harper is kidnapped, placed in a coffin, and thrown in the lake while nobody except their potential killer knows where they are. It could also become worse if everyone else survives (including Arthur)]].
* EleventhHourSuperpower: If you've bought all the items that unlock the chest in Grandpa's house, it unlocks [[spoiler: a suit of armor that allows Harper to fight back against Josephine on even ground.]]
* FinalGirl: Harper can become this in the final chapter if female, has enough nerve, and/or make the correct choices [[spoiler: to escape her drowning and kill Richard Sutcliffe]].
* {{Fingore}}: If Tom has low Nerve during the monster attack in Chapter 10, not only does their own Nerve take a huge hit, but they lose a pinky finger in the process.
* HelloInsertNameHere: Race, gender, and first name can all be chosen by the player, but the last name is fixed as "Vance" (because unlike in ''It Lives in the Woods'', some of your family members are major characters in this game as well).
* HeroicWillpower: If their nerve is high enough in the finale, [[spoiler: Harper will automatically escape from the coffin, even if they make all the incorrect choices]].
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Says this almost word for word when they [[spoiler: tell Josephine that her daughter, Marie, has been killed. This sends Josephine into a rage, accepts her form as a monster, and vows revenge on Arthur and the rest of The Society. Harper is shown to feel extreme guilt that they potentially ruined their grandmother's one chance at finding peace in the afterlife.]]
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: Early in the story, Harper can get a premium choice bracelet from Ned that warns them of danger when it glows.
* NomDeMom: Their surname comes from their mother Marie.
* PromotionToParent: After the events in Chapter 9 [[spoiler:with Arthur being arrested for confessing to murdering Harper and Elliot's parents]], they have the choice of taking up all parental duties for Elliot.
* TraumaButton: In the first chapter, seeing some accidentally spilled red alcohol stain a couch makes Harper automatically remember their parents’ murder.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: A male Harper gets to be one of these in Chapter 10 either in a premium outfit or even in the standard one.

----
* ActionSurvivor: He survives the events of ''It Lives in the Woods'', after being put in a coma and controlled by Redfield. Even after a few years, he still can't talk comfortably about Westchester.
** He stumbles and makes jokes when he meets Harper. Harper can have the option to tease his "mysterious past" as being a "secretly big dork".
** In Chapter 5, he tells Harper that he initially studied engineering because he wanted to build his own ''Franchise/{{Transformers}}'' robot.
** If Harper chooses to dance with him in Chapter 7, Tom will blush and stutter, confessing that he has never been asked to dance.
* AscendedExtra: He was only a supporting character in ''It Lives in the Woods''. In ''It Lives Beneath'', he gets PromotedToLoveInterest for Harper.
* BigDamnHeroes: He saves Harper, Parker and Danni from the mutant bear in Chapter 5.
** A high Nerve Tom saves Harper during the monster attack in Chapter 10, not wanting to let anyone else be a victim.
* CastFromHitPoints: While there aren't any visible HP in the game, Tom can only cast his fire spell if he has a source of fire pressed against his palm, which hurts him.
* FirstGuyWins: He's the first male that can be romanced by Harper, meaning they'll be this trope by the end of the story.
* FlippingTheBird: He does this in Chapter 12 to Astrid as an act of defiance even when he and Harper are surrounded by cultists.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: He and Andy were very close friends, even before Andy's change. They never show romantic attraction to each other, despite both being bisexual.
* HunterOfMonsters: In Chapter 5 of ''Beneath'' he confesses to Harper, Parker and Danni that he has been hunting monsters and any kind of paranormal creatures to save people, which is the reason why he moved to Pine Springs. This is motivated by the traumatic experiences caused by Redfield.
* ICallItVera: If you bought the enchanted wrench back in Chapter 9, Parker gives it to him in Chapter 11 and Tom reveals he named it [[Creator/JudiDench Dame Judy Wrench]]
* IOweYouMyLife: He says this to Parker after he saves him, Harper and Imogen from the Society.
--> “Dude... Parker... I owe you one, man. Like, big time. We're talking '[[Franchise/StarWars Wookie life-debt]]' territory.”
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: If he has the lowest Nerve score, [[spoiler:he is impaled by antlers through the chest, throat, stomach, and arms.]]
* KnightInSourArmor: Having played in the basketball team since junior high has made him more cynical than Andy on their prospects in the team, but that doesn't stop him from supporting Andy.
* LovableJock: Like Andy, he is one of the few decent guys in the basketball team.
* LoveInterest: In ''It Lives in the Woods'', he tells Andy that he used to date a girl, but broke up with her after [[ForeignCultureFetish she kept calling him "Sempai"]]. He's available to Harper as a love interest regardless of gender.
* MrFixIt: He works as a boat mechanic in Pine Springs.
* MyEyesAreUpHere: In Chapter 3, Harper walks in on a shirtless Tom in the garage. If they let the timer run out, he has to tell them the trope name.

* ProperlyParanoid: In Chapter 11, he tells the rest of the gang that he can’t trust The Society, since he is the only one who isn’t close to any of the members (like Imogen and Parker) or needs something from them (like Danni). His suspicions increase after Chief Kelley’s ominous speech. Harper can potentially agree with him[[spoiler:, turning out to be right about the true nature of the cult.]]
* SecretKeeper: He and Harper, along with Devon/Noah are the only ones who know about whoever became Mr. Red.
* SuddenSequelDeathSyndrome: He suffers this trope if his nerve score is extremely low.
* TokenMinority: In ''It Lives in the Woods'', he and Andy get discriminated in the basketball team because they are Asians, though Andy got it worse due to being both short and transgender.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: He gets one in Chapter 3 when Harper goes to tell him about the events that happened with Ned the night before.
* WrenchWhack: A premium choice in Chapter 9 allows him to use Arthur's enchanted wrench as a weapon.

* TheAtoner: If she survives, Imogen feels that the damage to Pine Springs was on her parents, so she made a mission to donate most of her possessions to restore the town.
* BigDamnHeroes: If she has the bolas, she'll use them to rescue Harper, Tom, and Robbie from an elk monster in Chapter 11.
* BigEater: A premium choice date with her in Chapter 9 shows she can really put the food away and still have room for dessert after wards.

* NiceToTheWaiter: She invites Tom and Harper to her party for fixing her yacht, despite just meeting them.

* PowerGlows: [[spoiler: Her body begins to glow, showing that the Power has accepted her.]]
* SpeaksFluentAnimal: She gains the power to speak to animals when she makes her contract with the Power in Chapter 9. [[spoiler: If she has a low Nerve score in Chapter 12, she loses her power when Astrid takes the power back.]]
* SpoiledSweet: She is very rich and doesn't hold up when it comes to partying big, and is still nice to all people in Pine Springs regardless of their social status.
* TraumaCongaLine: Imogen gets it really bad throughout the book. [[spoiler:Her friend Kyle is killed, and she partially blames herself. She later learns something's up with her parents, who influence her to join a cult. Her horse Diavolos dies, taken by the monsters. She later learns her parents are truly evil, older than they look, and are the start of this whole mess. In Chapters 14 and 15, her father and mother respectively get brutally murdered by a ghost right in front of her eyes, and depending on nerve score, she might see one of her friends be killed or die herself.]]
* TrueBlueFemininity: She wears blue and is more feminine than Danni.
* WellDoneSonGuy: Her parents make sure that she excels in all she does while acting cold towards her if she fails to meet their standards. The only time she gets their verbal acknowledgement was after [[spoiler:The Power accepted her.]]

* YouKilledMyFather: [[spoiler:Chapter 14 has her father Vincent killed by Josephine when she's freed. Her mother Astrid is then killed as well.]]

A nice police officer who seems to understand that something bad is going on in town.
----

--> “You have the right to ''SHUT THE HELL UP!''”
* CannotTalkToWomen: Despite his confidence as a police officer, he suffers from a loss of words when he offers to drive Harper home.

* CutenessProximity: If Harper decides to befriend the otter as a Premium, Parker won't resist gushing over how cute it is.
* DarkAndTroubledPast[=/=]FormerTeenRebel: In Chapter 2, if Harper goes on the car ride with him, he says that his parents [[AbusiveParents didn't treat him well when he was growing up]], causing him to lash out to other people that he almost ended up in juvie, but Chief Kelly saved him from going down that path and inspired him to become a police officer.

He gets to use them in Chapter 15 against a zombie bear, keeping it from attacking.

* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: If she has the lowest Nerve score by Chapter 15, [[spoiler:she is ripped in half by the monsters.]]
* HiddenDepths: While generally acting calm and collected with more research and suspicion into the town's mystery, Danni can just as easily losing Nerve score as the rest of the main characters. Her Nerve notably starts out at 0 like the rest of the group.
* {{Hipster}}: At least that's how she's labeled in town, especially by Richard, much to her annoyance.
* LoveInterest: She's available to Harper as a love interest regardless of gender.
* PowerFist: Chapter 11 gives her brass knuckles as her premium weapon. It's enough to take down a zombie bear in two hits.
* RagsToRiches: Downplayed. If she survives, while she's not utterly rich, her new job at [[VisualNovel/LoveHacks ClickIt]] has allowed her to help her dad finally get surgery and to help pay the mortgage on her parents' house.
* SpicyLatina: She is Hispanic and is easily one of the more aggressive members of the group.

[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilbelliot.jpg]]
Harper's younger half-brother.
----
* AmbiguouslyGay: In Chapter 2, Harper notices that Elliot looks smitten with his new friend Robbie. When asked about it, he quickly tries to deny it because he is a guy despite being visibly flustered, but then asks if it would be fine if that was the case. It's not clear if he had crushes on girls as well. All ambiguity is dropped out the window in Chapter 10 when Elliot kisses Robbie.
* BigBrotherWorship: He clearly adores Harper, despite being half-siblings. After their parents' deaths, they are the only family they have to rely on, without considering their estranged grandfather.
* BigEater: He was still hungry after emptying three popcorn boxes and Harper's gummy bears at the movies.
* DistressedDude: The end of Chapter 10 reveals he was taken by the Lake Ghost.
* EmancipatedChild: After the events in Chapter 9 [[spoiler:with Arthur confessing to murdering Harper and Elliot's parents]], one of the options given is to allow him to be an emancipated child.
* EmbarrassingNickname: “Scooter” is this due to asking for one for every birthday and Christmas when he was little. When he finally got one, he fell and knocked out four of his baby teeth. It's left him with a fear of scooters, skateboards and bikes.
* RapidFireNo: In Chapter 10, he lets one of these out if Harper decides to tell Robbie why he's called “Scooter.”
* SoleSurvivor: Con potentially be this,[[spoiler: if Arthur dies in the game and Harper gets killed by Richard]].

[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilbarthur.jpg]]
Harper and Elliot's maternal grandfather.
----
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:When Harper finds out that Arthur was the one who revealed the existence of the Power to The Society, this caused Josephine to be spiked to the bottom of the lake, incapable of saving her to protect their daughter. He spends the following 50 years with Josephine and Marie’s deaths on his conscience.]]
* EvilOldFolks: [[spoiler:He's revealed to be a member of the Society in Pine Springs. In Chapter 12, it’s revealed that he is actually the TokenGoodTeammate, working to destroy The Society from the inside.]]
* GruesomeGrandparent: Initially seems to be a downplayed, overly strict version of this. [[spoiler:Then it turns out he killed Harper's parents. [[SubvertedTrope Except not]]; [[GoodAllAlong he was framed]] by The Society.]]
* GrumpyOldMan: He is always in a bad mood, and despite having the custody of his grandkids, he is far from nice to them.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: When Harper and Elliot meet him, Arthur acts strict and grumpy to them, [[spoiler:When in reality he was trying to keep them out of the way to protect them from The Society, after he lost his daughter and her husband. He ended up saving Harper’s life three times.]]
* OffingTheOffspring: [[spoiler:In Chapter 9, he confesses that he had a hand in killing his daughter and son-in-law. However, it’s later revealed that Vincent used his power to make Arthur take the blame, so Harper and the others would trust them.]]
* PromotionToParent: He is assigned as Harper and Elliot’s legal guardian, despite never having met him before.
* SoleSurvivor: [[spoiler: He can become this for the Society if he survives and Harper succeeds in killing Richard]].
* WalkingSpoiler: Almost all his entries are plot points.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: He has an incredibly strict curfew, although this is because he believes this will keep his grandkids safe. [[spoiler: He is also aware of whatever lives in the lake, given the suit and the fact that when Elliot suggests going swimming, he immediately says they'll be doing no such thing.]]

[[caption-width-right:350:Left to right: Vincent and Astrid]]
Imogen's overbearing parents.
----
* AbusiveParents: They are emotionally and verbally abusive to Imogen, such as yelling at her when she doesn't agree with them and putting the cult's interests over her feelings. Astrid even calls Imogen an ungrateful [[WitchWithACapitalB witch]] when the latter fights back.
* BigBadDuumvirate: The two of them are this to “Beneath” as the human villains of the book.
* CompellingVoice: Vincent's power is that he can make anyone say or do anything against their will.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Despite their generally callous behavior, they still show concern for each other and Imogen. In Chapter 7, Imogen says that she received her horse Diavolos from her father as a graduation gift. [[spoiler:In Chapter 14, Vincent tells Imogen to run to safety from the bear and elk monsters, and his death at Josephine's hands angers Astrid. The next chapter has Astrid killed by a marlinspike meant for Imogen by jumping in front of it.]]
* FauxAffablyEvil: They appear to be GoodAllAlong when the rogue members of the society are revealed, [[spoiler:claiming that they aren’t murderous at all and simply protecting the town. However, Chapter 11 reveals that they are evil when they plan to sacrifice Harper to the lake.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Astrid dies jumping in front of a marlinspike meant for Imogen.]]
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler: Josephine kills Vincent with one of the marlinspikes used on her through his heart. In Chapter 15, Astrid gets this along with OffWithHerHead protecting Imogen from Josephine's wrath.]]
* OhCrap: Vincent has this reaction in Chapter 14 if Harper takes the marlinspike in a premium option.
* OlderThanTheyLook: They look like a couple in their 40s, but are really just as old as Arthur because of the Power keeping them young.
* Pet The Dog: She embraces Your Character (her oldest grandchild), when she learns of their relationship and states she wishes, she’d be there to see them grow up.
* SenselessSacrifice: Should [[spoiler:Imogen subsequently be killed by the monsters, Astrid's sacrifice is this.]]
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: Astrid is the only female prominent cultist.
* ThisCannotBe: If Harper has high nerve and resists Vincent's command to submit, he has this reaction when they resist his spell. The same thing happens when Elliot resists his voice as well in Chapter 13.
* UnholyMatrimony: Both are married and members of the murderous cult in Pine Springs.

!!Abraham Kelley

The chief of the Pine Springs Police Department.
----
* BadCopIncompetentCop: Revealed to be the bad cop in Chapter 7.
** Subverted, [[spoiler: as one of the members of the local cult, he's been helping to protect the town.]]
** DoubleSubverted, [[spoiler:the cult is planning to sacrifice Harper, and he is hunting them down again after Chapter 12.]]
* DirtyCop: [[spoiler: He is revealed to be part of The Society, and is in charge of shutting down any investigation on missing people from Pine Springs.]]
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: [[spoiler: He's mauled to death by one of the zombie bears in Chapter 14 when Josephine is freed if he's spared by a high Nerve Parker.]]
* {{Expy}}: He physically resembles Sheriff Keller from Series/{{Riverdale}}, has a similar surname and is also a police chief.
* GunStruggle: [[spoiler: He can die this way if Parker has low Nerve, getting shot while they wrestle for his gun.]]
* PoliceAreUseless: [[spoiler:Triple subverted.]] Although Chief Kelly seems like a nice guy (he did save Parker's life) and isn't doing this out of laziness or malice (unlike Chief Walsh in ''Veil of Secrets''), he straights up admit that there won't be an investigation into Kyle's death. [[spoiler:He's revealed to be one of the good members of the local cult. Unfortunately, he is revealed to be EvilAllAlong causing Parker to be heartbroken upon [[BrokenPedestal realizing his hero is an evil homicidal serial killer]] and slips into a HeroicBSOD.]]

!!Richard Sutcliffe
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilbrichard.png]]
Robbie's father and one of the richest personalities in Pine Springs.
----
* AbhorrentAdmirer: He makes several inappropriate advances towards Danni. What's really disturbing is that he is significantly older than her and he has a teenage son.
* ADickInName: His first impression is very unpleasant and indicative of what kind of person he is. When they first meet, Harper can call him "Dick" to humor Danni and increase her nerve score. If Harper survives the finale, they get the option to say "Surprise, Dick."
--->'''Harper:''' Have you considered going by Dick? Because you ''really'' seem like a Dick to me.
* BondVillainStupidity: In the finale, [[spoiler: Richard successfully drugs Harper to unconsciousness, but rather than kill them, he puts them in a coffin and tries to drown them alive. Harper can then escape and kill him if you make the right choices. Richard then offers a LampshadeHanging by saying he should have just bashed Harper's head in with a rock when he had the chance.]]
* DragonTheirFeet: Just when you think it's over after two months, [[spoiler:Richard shows up out of the blue to kidnap and attempt to murder Harper]].
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Is shown to care somewhat about Robbie, naming his dungeon password after him and ranting about losing him [[spoiler:in an argument with Harper]].
* EvilIsPetty: Has absolutely nothing to gain by [[spoiler: trying to murder Harper in the finale]], but he does it anyway. He even plots to [[spoiler: allow Elliot to recover from Harper's death before killing him too]] just for some additional petty satisfaction.
* FinalBoss: He's this for the book.
* GroinAttack: If Harper survives the death trap, one of the options to attack him with is a good old-fashioned kick down below.
* HatedByAll: Nobody in Pine Springs was fond of Richard, even inside the Society. After the two-month time skip, Robbie only wants to forget about his father, because he is aware that he was a very bad man.
* HateSink: On his very first appearance, he was shown to be a creepy lech to Danni, homophobic towards Elliot, [[spoiler:and a member of the Society who killed Ned Mallory and replaced him with a servant shapeshifter. In the final chapter, he reveals to Harper that he murdered their parents.]]
* HeteronormativeCrusader: According to Robbie, he’s unhappy with Robbie’s “choices”.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: If Harper survives, he attacks them with a fire extinguisher which puts a hole in the hull of the boat they're on, getting his foot stuck in it. Harper can then use this time to either bash him over the head or let them drown.
* IOwnThisTown: He described Pine Springs as ''his'' town when he was strangling Harper in Chapter 8.
* ItsPersonal: [[spoiler:In Chapter 17, Richard wants to murder Harper in revenge for everything that happened, despite the fact that he can't gain anything from that. Then he plans to go after Arthur (if he survives) and Elliot.]]
* NeverFoundTheBody: Officially, his body was lost due to the dam flooding. [[spoiler: If Harper escapes, they make sure this trope is fully played straight either with their own hands or by letting fate take its course.]]
* PapaWolf: Despite inviting Danni to his auction party, he immediately revokes Harper's invitation because of his relation with Elliot, who he considers a bad influence for Robbie.
* PostClimaxConfrontation: In Chapter 17, as Harper is preparing fishsticks, Richard kidnaps them and stuffs them in a coffin at the bottom of the lake. If Harper fails to escape, they will die. And this happens after everything is said and done with the surviving friends in the two month TimeSkip.
* PsychicStrangle: In Chapter 8, Richard nearly chokes Harper to death without touching them.
* PyrrhicVillainy: In the finale, he openly acknowledges that he has already lost and that there's not much point in [[spoiler: killing Harper and their family]] other than a few moments of wicked enjoyment.
* RevealingInjury: He's identified as a cultist by the bruise he sustained from fighting Harper in Chapter 3.
* TheScapegoat: After Harper realizes that Richard was one of the cultists who attacked Ned, the Society claims that he, along with Craig and Arthur, was solely responsible for the murder and imprisons him for this. In reality, [[spoiler: the whole society was in on it.]]
* SoleSurvivor: He becomes this for the Society if [[spoiler: Arthur dies and he succeeds in killing Harper]].
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler:If Harper escapes his death trap, he goes into a blind rage trying to kill Harper. If he's "spared", instead he'll start pleading for his life as he's dragged to a watery grave from the sinking boat.]]
* VillainsWantMercy: If you [[spoiler: escape his coffin in the finale,]] he's left begging Harper for mercy. You can choose to accept or reject his plea, and [[spoiler: he'll die either way.]]

[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilbkyle.jpg]]
Imogen's best friend who drowned at a yacht party Imogen hosted.
----
* DecoyProtagonist: He gets a lot of CharacterShilling from Imogen, and Harper has the option to flirt with him, making him look like one of the main {{Love Interest}}s. Instead, he is immediately killed off in the first chapter of the story, in front of Harper's eyes.
* DistressedDude: Towards the end of Chapter 1, he gets hypnotized into diving into the lake and dragged deeper by a skeletal being.
* {{Foil}}: To Connor Green. They both serve as one of the respective main characters' love interests, appear in the first chapter, and do not have nerve scores. While Connor survives to the end of Book 1, Kyle dies after his debut.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: With Imogen, who described him as the "sweetest, most hilarious guy" she would never date because "he's basically her brother".
* RedShirt: His death is the first demonstration of the lake monster's powers.
* SacrificialLamb: Kyle essentially exists to introduce the lake ghost in the most jarring way possible—the player can even gain romance points with him, setting him up as a long-term character so his death will come as a surprise even to more genre-savvy players. His death in the very first chapter helps to set up the more [[DarkerAndEdgier brutal]], [[BloodierAndGorier violent]] tone of ''It Lives Beneath'' compared to the first book.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: Initial descriptions of him as Imogen's best friend and a great guy, in addition to the friendly conversation he has with Harper, made it seem like that he'd become a main character. But he's killed off at the end of the very first chapter.

!!Ned Mallory
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilbned.jpg]]
A concerned citizen whose wife committed an abrupt suicide years ago and he believes there's more to the story
----
* CassandraTruth: He is the only adult in town who believes that an evil entity is murdering people, while others act patronizing to him. He is moved to tears when Harper supports him.
* ISeeThemToo: He's relieved when Harper tells him they saw something supernatural and believes him.
* MakeItLookLikeAnAccident: He is on the other end. He believes that his wife was actually murdered and that it wasn't the suicide it was chalked up to be.
* StringTheory: When Harper gets inside his house, it has a lot of newspaper clips and notes from previous drownings in town.
* UnexplainedRecovery: [[spoiler: He's looking rather fine for someone who just got stabbed to death by cultists the night before. In Chapter 9, we learn that he called Chief Kelley after getting stabbed, and Chief Kelley was able to use the Power to heal him and save his life. However, in Chapter 11 it’s revealed that it wasn’t Ned, a shapeshifter took his place.]]

!!Robert William "Robbie" Sutcliffe
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilbrobbie.jpg]]
Elliot's friend.
----
* AmbiguouslyGay: When he and Harper run into each other at his father's party, Robbie asks about Elliot with a visible blush. If Harper chooses to encourage them to hang out more, Robbie looks very excited at the possibility of Elliot returning his affection. All ambiguity is thrown out the window when they eventually become boyfriends.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: He is very nice and good looking, with Elliot crushing on him.
* InformedJudaism: He mentions Hanukkah as well as New Year's as the holidays his mother visits him.
* LikeFatherUnlikeSon: Harper is shocked to learn that Robbie is Richard Sutcliffe's son.
-->'''Harper''': You're Robbie's dad?! But he's such a nice kid, and you're... uhm...
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: He has no idea about the Society until Chapter 9.
* LongDistanceRelationship: In Chapter 17, Harper can convince Elliot in a premium scene to go spend time with Robbie before he moves away to Tulsa with his mother. They promise each other to keep their relationship with texts and Skype calls.
* LoveInterest: For Elliot. Depending on dialogue choices, they can date for real.
* OptionalPartyMember: Harper can choose to send him off to safety with the Society or allow him to come along to help [[spoiler:rescue Elliot from the lake ghost]], although he doesn’t appear for several chapters after the choice itself.

----
* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler: Chapter 13 reveals her body is literally spiked to the bottom of the river, having been used as the Society's power conduit. The same ritual Imogen did to gain her powers kills her again and again each time. Chapter 14 shows her remains in full detail.]]
* GruesomeGrandparent: [[spoiler:Arthur was framed for her actions; she's killed many of the residents of Pine Springs.]]
* TheHeavy: While Astrid and Vincent are responsible for a lot of villainy in the book, she's responsible for all the deaths involved either through drownings or her zombies attacking.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Once she's freed from being pinned down do the lake, she uses the marlinspikes as her weapons against the cultists, [[spoiler:as well as on Astrid]].
* LeaveNoSurvivors: The only words she has is “KILL THEM ALL!” [[spoiler: After learning her backstory, it's at anything and everything perceived to be part of the Society. By Chapter 15, it now includes everyone living in Pine Springs, whom she considers as parasites.]]
* MakeItLookLikeAnAccident: Her modus operandi involves hypnotizing a nearby hapless person into drowning themselves in the lake, even if it means the victim has to break out of the house first.
* MissingMom: It was revealed that she died when her daughter Marie [[spoiler:(Harper and Elliot's mother)]] was still a baby.
* OccultBlueEyes: The monsters she spawns and anyone she hypnotizes into drowning themselves have glowing blue eyes. When she appears, she also has glowing blue eyes.
* Pet the Dog: She embraced Your Character (her oldest grandchild) when she learns of their relationship and she states she wishes, she’d be there to see them grow up.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: [[spoiler: All of the deaths she's caused were in revenge against the Society for staking her to the lake, using her as a conduit for the Power. It gets worse when in Chapter 14, just as it looks like [[HopeSpot she's regaining her sanity,]] she finds out her daughter is dead and is even more hellbent on killing the Society, especially Astrid and Arthur.]]
* WasOnceAMan: [[spoiler:Like Redfield before her, the ghost was once a rogue member of the Society who wanted more power for herself and got transformed by the Power.]]
** [[spoiler: Chapter 12 reveals she was actually a Keeper of the Power like Cora was, and that her true identity is Harper's grandmother, Josephine.]]

!!Diavolos
Imogen’s horse, which she got after graduating high school.
----
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler: He's brought back as one of Josephine's zombies in Chapter 15. A high Nerve Imogen can tame him back to her side if she still has her powers.]]
* CoolHorse: Imogen rides him on many occasions, even pulling a BigDamnHeroes together. [[spoiler: He becomes even moreso if a high Nerve Imogen still has her powers and tames him after his zombification.]]
* ContinuityNod: He was named after Diavolos Nevrakis from VisualNovel/TheCrownAndTheFlame.
* HeroicSacrifice: After breaking out of the Lake Ghost’s control, Diavolos saves Imogen last minute before being dragged and devoured by the creatures.
