->''"Let's show this green maniac how to save a planet!"''
->'''Voiced by:''' [[Creator/DawnMBennett Dawn Michelle Bennett]]

A water dragon and the main character of the game. She and Carol are on their way to [[JustLikeRobinHood steal from the rich]] when she spots a plane hurtling out of control into the countryside. Selflessly rushing to rescue the pilot, she unwittingly catapults herself to the forefront of the impending conflict. Lilac uses her whip-like hair for heavy strikes and her spinning cyclone manoeuvre.
----
* ActionGirl: She's a fast and powerful water dragon that can hair whip, kick, and spin attack any foe in her way to protect her planet.
* AirplaneArms: Does this when running on a half-corkscrew.
* AntiHero: Subverted as she and Carol, while having used to be members of the Red Scarves, left the organization some time ago.
* BadassAdorable: Splits the difference between Carol and Milla. She's a determined fighter that can use her hair to spin, boost, and perform upper and lower cut attacks, but she's also a peppy GenkiGirl in the form of a violet mini dragoness.
* BadassBoast: Has several of these:
-->'''Lilac:''' I don't care how dangerous this is. It's gonna take a lot more than robots and aliens to slow a dragon down!\
'''Lilac:''' Let's show this green maniac how to save a planet!\
'''Lilac:''' Your machines won't save you from the dragon you've unleashed! ''I WILL DESTROY EVERYTHING YOU THROW AT ME! '''[[MamaBear I WILL MAKE YOU PAY FOR WHAT YOU HAVE DONE!]]'''''
* BadassInDistress: [[spoiler:At the end of Stage 6, when Brevon captures and brutally tortures her, and needs Carol and Milla to help her escape.]]
* BerserkButton: Threatening or harming Milla. [[spoiler:She flies into a full-on [[UnstoppableRage unstoppable rage]] at Brevon after the final battle when he makes that mistake]]. She also ''really'' doesn't like being called a "sparkly twit" or "squidhead".
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She's quite friendly, polite and good-natured, but woe betide you if you threaten innocents or her friends. Threaten [[CheerfulChild Milla]] in particular? Simply put, ''[[MamaBear God help you]]''.
* CallingYourAttacks: "[[LargeHam CYCLOOOOOOONE!]]"
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Right down to the [[JustLikeRobinHood Robin Hood-esque profession]], Lilac suffers from a case from this; as Carol's AffectionateNickname for her of "Little Miss Heropants" indicates.
* ClearMyName: [[spoiler:While she gets arrested by Neera after barely surviving Brevon's torture in the Thermal Base, the Magister finds Lilac and her friends innocent. But the Magister sends her on a mission to Pangu Lagoon before their names can be cleared, as she lied to get Torque released.]]
* ColourfulThemeNaming: She is named after the lilac color, which is her predominant body color.
* CoolBigSis: Lilac acts very much like one towards Milla.
* DefectorFromDecadence: Was once a member of the Red Scarves, a society of thieves, but eventually left due to disagreements with their values.
* DelightfulDragon: Downplayed example. She's a water dragon who's very perky and friendly with a big heroic streak, but [[BewareTheNiceOnes becomes downright]] ''[[BewareTheNiceOnes ferocious]]'' if you harm innocents or her friends.
* {{Determinator}}: She refuses to give up under any circumstances, even when the rest of the team starts having doubts about their mission.
** In the first game, [[BigBad Lord Brevon]] himself suspects that she's one of these [[spoiler:despite being both physically and mentally scarred from his torture]].
** In the sequel, [[spoiler:after getting blasted by a trick bomb by Merga, she refuses to go down and actively fights to stay conscious, with Merga [[VillainRespect genuinely impressed]] that she wasn't knocked out entirely.]]
* DragonAncestry: She's actually a ''half''-dragon hybrid, with her other heritage unknown.
* DragonRider: {{Invoked|Trope}}; during the UnexpectedShmupLevel between Pangu Lagoon and Battle Glacier, she leads the assault on Brevon's base of operations on the back of the Holodragon, [[spoiler:which is a battle form taken by Pangu, a drone she recovered from Pangu Lagoon during her investigation mission on behalf of the Magister.]] Yes, that's right. She's a dragon that rides a dragon. Already confused?
* EarFins: She supposedly has fish fin-like ears. However, we never get to see them, as they are always obscured by blue earpieces, which, according to the developers, are actually a set of hearing aids, as her half-breed nature results in a genetic defect that renders her near-deaf.
* GenkiGirl: Very energetic and enthusiastic. She jumps up and down cheering when you complete a level.
* GirlyBruiser: Lilac is the most feminine of the three main girls, yet has some of the [[LightningBruiser hardest-hitting attacks]].
* GuestFighter: She appears in ''VideoGame/IndiePogo'', a platform fighter, as a playable character, and in ''Super Indie Karts'' as a racer, alongside Carol.
* HandicappedBadass: According to the developers, because Lilac is a half-breed, she was born with a genetic defect that rendered her hard of hearing to the point of deafness. Thus, the blue earpieces she always wears aren't just stylish, but are actually a set of hearing aids that may also be covering a physical deformity round about where her ears are.
* HairTropes: Her hair is pretty much a part of her identity.
** HelicopterHair: Her Dragon Cyclone technique makes use of her twin tails that way. When she is spinning like a top, her twin tails will act like rotor blades and let her glide through the air.
** NonMammalianHair: She's a dragon with twin tails.
** PrehensileHair: Lilac's main form of attack is to whip her two long strands of hair at enemies. She can also form them into a wheel to roll around. Milla's first impulse is to touch her hair, which she says is more or less textured like a rope.
** TraumaticHairCut: Her twin tails were severed while she was [[spoiler:unconscious following her defeat]] by the hands of [[spoiler:Lord Brevon]]. Luckily, they were able to grow back after [[spoiler:a dip in a [[HealingSpring healing bath]]]], but a barber in the Battlesphere awakens the trauma when innocently plying her trade.
* HartmanHips: Lilac has 'em in her artwork. Downplayed in her redesign for the second game.
* HeterosexualLifePartner: With Carol. They always stick together ever since their early days being part of the Red Scarfs.
* InformedSpecies: There's nothing particularly draconic about her appearance, at least in terms of Western Dragons. This is because, according to her dialog with Torque, the mythical giant dragons were reptilian aliens who apparently [[HotSkittyOnWailordAction interbred with the locals of her planet long ago]]. And later, it's revealed that the "giant" bit may have been a ruse to gain the locals' trust.
* ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies: Carol splits up with Lilac after their argument at the end of the Jade Creek stage, and Lilac decides to rescue Torque on her own. [[spoiler:When Milla offers to come along, Lilac tells her to stay behind as she doesn't want to recklessly put her friends in danger, and ditches Milla when she insists on trying to follow her.]]
* IWillFindYou: [[spoiler:In the end of the sequel, she sets off on a journey to find Merga after learning that [[NeverFoundTheBody her body was never found]], though her motivation differs in two endings; in the default ending, she wants to find her to talk her out of her revenge quest, while in the true ending, she wants to help her make peace with her past and [[YouAreNotAlone assure her that she's not alone]].]]
* KimonoIsTraditional: Sports one as part of her redesign in the sequel.
* LastNameBasis: Lilac is actually her last name, which she goes by as a way of distancing herself from her past. Sash, her first name, is given only during her [[spoiler:initial arrest in Shang Tu]].
* LeeroyJenkins: Her biggest flaw. While her willingness to help others is admirable, it often crosses over into recklessness. The biggest examples are her SelfSacrificeScheme, which only put Torque in an even ''worse'' situation than before, and going off into Thermal Base alone, leading to Lilac getting [[CurbStompBattle curb stomped]] [[spoiler:and [[ColdBloodedTorture tortured]]]] by Brevon for her troubles. Hell, [[JerkassHasAPoint even Lord Brevon points out]] that being that stubborn and reckless often only make things worse for her friends.
* LightningBruiser: Of the "hard-hitting speedster" variety. Very mobile, reasonably durable -- especially while she's charging or using her Dragon Boost -- and hits hard.
* LoveableRogue: She and Carol routinely steal from the rich as they make their pilgrimages to the Kingdom Stone, so the pair can fund their lives away from civilization in their treehouse. Far from a noble profession; that said, she's a fairly good-spirited person, and is more than willing to lend a hand to those in trouble.
* MakingASplash: Water Elemental, unsuprisingly. In the sequel, this means the Elemental Burst item causes water damage over time when she uses it.
* MamaBear: Lilac is a platonic version of this to Milla, being especially friendly to and protective of the young puppy [[spoiler:to the point where she delivers a ''furious'' NoHoldsBarredBeatdown to [[WouldHurtAChild Lord Brevon]] after he either mutates her into a horrifying monster to send after her and Carol (Lilac's Adventure), or tries to strangle her (Milla's Adventure)]].
* MeaningfulName: She's certainly lilac-colored.
* NiceGirl: Lilac is glad to help anyone in need, and she agrees to let Milla touch her tendrils and invites Milla back to Lilac and Carol's treehouse despite only just meeting her.
* NonHumanHumanoidHybrid: The developers state that Lilac is technically ''half''-dragon, with her other heritage hidden. As other characters appear to think of her as pureblood in-game, whether or not she is aware of this fact herself is yet to be revealed.
* NonMammalMammaries: She has breasts despite being a water dragon. Justified due to them being from the mammalian side of her [[NonHumanHumanoidHybrid Half-Dragon Hybrid]] anatomy.
* NotQuiteFlight: By spinning horizontally in mid-air with her Dragon Cyclone move, Lilac can [[HelicopterHair hover through the air for short periods like a helicopter rotor]]. While it doesn't let her rise up as high or stay aloft for as long as Milla's [[EarWings Puppy Float]], it ''can'' go a greater horizontal distance with sufficient momentum behind it; making it great for use as a DoubleJump or taking long flying leaps.
* OurDragonsAreDifferent:
** She's a water dragon, so she isn't going to be breathing fire anytime soon. As a dragon in the Asian-themed world of Avalice, her two long strands of "hair" correspond to the whiskers of Eastern Dragons. Personality-wise, she's about as benign and friendly as an Eastern Dragon can get -- at least [[BewareTheNiceOnes until you provoke her]] -- her Dragon Boost ability allows her to gain some air time even if she doesn't have full-out flight, and her quick wits let her put two and two together quickly and figure out key points fast; all of which are traits of Eastern Dragons.
** Being a [[NonHumanHumanoidHybrid Hybrid]], she also has a noticeably mammalian anatomy, especially compared alongside the far more reptilian pure Water Dragon Merga. It's particularly evident in features like her long hair, prominent bust and hips, plantigrade legs and feet, small fluffy tail, lack of visible claws, and her little black nose.
* ParentalAbandonment: As revealed in the sequel, she was separated from her parents at birth due to [[spoiler:Spade stealing her egg from her parents before she could've hatched.]]
* PunctuatedForEmphasis: At the end of the game, when [[spoiler:Lilac unleashes a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown on Brevon after you win the boss fight against him]]:
-->'''Lilac:''' [[spoiler:(''repeatedly Dragon Boosting into Brevon'') [[MamaBear Nobody... hurts... MILLA!]]]]
* PurpleIsPowerful: Lilac is a lilac-purple dragon, and she's very capable in combat.
* RaisedByOrcs: [[spoiler:She was raised by the Red Scarves ever since Spade stole her egg from her parents. The Scarves wanted a Water Dragon egg as a decoration for a pool room, but while they didn't expect her to hatch, they had no objections regarding having a Water Dragon in their ranks. However, the discovery that she was always supposed to be nothing more but a glorified decoration, combined with Spade's increasingly more immoral behavior, led to her abandoning the Red Scarves and striking on her own with Carol, and to this day, she still resents Spade for denying her a chance at normal life.]]
* ASharedSuffering: As she spent the rest of her life believing herself to be the last water dragon on Avalice, when she discovered the existence of Merga, she felt a connection with her and tried to reason with her whenever she saw a possibility, being the most determined to try to make her see the light. In fact, in response to Neera calling Lilac out on still trying to reason with Merga while Neera briefly considered her to be BeyondRedemption, Lilac explicitly states that maybe it ''is'' because of their shared status as the last water dragons to exist that Lilac wishes to help Merga, as opposed to ending her outright. In her turn, Merga actually [[VillainRespect reciprocates in her own way]], trying to convince Lilac to turn her back on the Royal Magister and his people instead to avenge their water dragon ancestors.
* SelfSacrificeScheme:
** Initiates one while [[spoiler:imprisoned in Shang Tu, where she falsely admits to coercing Torque in order to clear his name and allow him to escape ahead of time while she, Carol, and Milla break out of jail. It backfires ''spectacularly'', as Brevon uses that opportunity to capture Torque. It also ends up being a SenselessSacrifice, as it's very likely that the Magister would have examined the fragment of Serpentine's mech and cleared their names if she had just waited; after all, he examined the fragment after the heroines escaped, even when he had no reason to do so.]]
** After an argument which leads to Carol leaving the group in the middle of the story, [[spoiler:Lilac decides to rescue Torque alone so that no one else would be in danger, leaving Milla to catch up with Carol. ''This'' backfires ''even '''more''' spectacularly'' during ''her'' capture; Brevon points out that their actions have already put her friends in danger the moment they decided to try and stop him. This hits home when Carol changes her mind and she and Milla head to rescue both Torque and Lilac (although they didn't realize how much danger the latter was in until they find her). The rescue turns into a trap and all of them are almost killed as a result. Luckily, they escape with some outside help.]]
* SignificantWardrobeShift: In the sequel, she wears a more Chinese-themed outfit -- including what resembles an ''obi'' sash and a ''gi'' top with a short bodysuit underneath -- to go with Avalice's Asian motifs.
* SuperNotDrowningSkills: Downplayed example. Lilac will still drown if submerged long enough, but she can hold her breath underwater twice as long as anyone else. [[GameplayAndStoryIntegration It's one of the perks of being a water dragon.]]
* ThereIsAnother: She seems to have been the [[LastofHisKind last Dragonblood on Avalice descended from the water dragons]]. However, the sequel reveals the existence of another water dragon -- [[SealedEvilInACan Merga]]. [[spoiler:Furthermore, the ending has Lilac theorize that other water dragons may exist somewhere, her parents included, and she believes that by finding Merga, she'll be able to find answers about where could they be.]]
* ThisIsGonnaSuck: Lilac's reaction to Carol blowing off the mission in the sequel to participate in the Battlesphere.
-->'''Lilac''': ...Neera's gonna kill us.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: When you get to Brevon [[spoiler:at the end of Final Dreadnought 4]] with her, you can tell she's plenty pissed off at him for [[spoiler:his brainwashing and horrific mutation of Milla]], and she lets him know of this in no uncertain terms.
-->'''Lilac''': Your machines won't save you from the dragon you've unleashed... ''I WILL DESTROY EVERYTHING YOU THROW AT ME! '''[[UnstoppableRage I WILL MAKE YOU PAY FOR WHAT YOU HAVE DONE!]]'''''
* ThouShallNotKill: It's heavily implied that's the reason why she and Carol left the Red Scarves.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Lilac is one of two girly girls, along with Milla, to Carol's tomboy. Although Lilac herself is more of a TomboyWithAGirlyStreak, serving as a sort of middle-ground contrast to the other two.
* TraumaButton: After her horrific torture at the hands of Lord Brevon in the first game, which prominently included a TraumaticHaircut, Lilac is shown to be ''extremely'' nervous around a barber in the second game.
* TrueBlueFemininity: Her outfit is mostly sky blue and she's one of the trio's feminine characters.
* VocalEvolution: Her voice sounds noticeably deeper in the second game, presumably due to being older.
* WrongfulAccusationInsurance: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. She and her friends were arrested by Neera after the failed attempt to convince the Magister of Brevon's existence. To prove their innocence, Lilac had to lie to the Magister, bust out of prison, resist arrest and assault an officer. However, after the rearresting, the Magister had learned that Neera's accusations about her were false, so she and her friends managed to avoid the prison time, but she still had to go on a mission into Pangu Lagoon before her name could be cleared.

[[caption-width-right:259:"Oh-ho-ho, I've been waiting a long time for this!"]]
->''"Can't you be Little Miss Heropants some other time?"''
->'''Voiced by:''' Amanda Lott

A rather impetuous wildcat, and Lilac's best friend. While she's more scrappy than Lilac and still sports her red scarf, she's nevertheless willing to do the right thing, especially if there's money involved. Carol attacks rapidly with her claws, kicks, and a somersault attack. The sequel lets her aim a disc in any direction from which she can pounce to gain mobility. When she finds a gas can, she gains her trademark motorcycle, capable of some truly impressive abilities.
----
* ActionGirl: Like Lilac, she's a capable fighter who can rapidly kick and claw swipe her enemies.
* AmazingTechnicolorWildlife: How many bright green cats have you seen? The sequel attempts to justify this (and features several other cats with a similar color scheme) with the explanation that wildcats evolved green fur in this setting for camouflage purposes in their native Parusa.
* AntiHero: Formerly like Lilac, although her antiheroic tendencies are still around.
* AudibleSharpness: Her claw swipes produce metallic clanging sounds, especially her Wild Claw.
* BadassAdorable: She may be a ninja with a motorcycle, but she's still an adorable kitty.
* BadassBiker: Carol is able to claw swipe, kick, and roll attack her enemies while on her motorcycle.
* BadassNormal: Compared to the other three heroines. She doesn't have Lilac's speed, Neera's frost arts, or Milla's strange powers; just a motorcycle and some kung-fu kicks.
* TheBigGuy: She's the toughest and the tomboy of the main trio. She fits the bill.
* BoisterousBruiser: She's very enthusiastic about fighting her opponents, as seen in the sequel.
* CarFu: More like Bike Fu, but Carol is capable of weaponizing her entire motorcycle to smash the baddies. In the second game, she can even throw it identically to her Jump Disc!
* CatNinja: She is a cat with ninja training.
* CatsAreSnarkers: She's quick to make fun of others' stupidity.
* CoolBike: If she can find any of the gas cans scattered about Avalice, she'll instantly gain a rockin' motorcycle, capable of a DoubleJump and NitroBoost, as well as driving up walls and ladders with ease.
* CuteBruiser: As adorable as a kitten, but fierce as a tiger.
* CuteKitten: Just listen to the sound she makes in the first game when she pounces!
* CuteLittleFangs: Carol has small fangs that can be seen in some cutscenes.
* DeadpanSnarker: She's got a pretty dry wit.
* DeathOfAThousandCuts: Her attacks individually do noticeably less damage than Lilac's, but she swings much more quickly.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: In the sequel, Carol invokes a SkywardScream when she discovers that she was left on a boat with nothing but raisins to eat.
* DrivingUpAWall: Carol can drive up walls when she has her motorcycle.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Sure she's more than willing to steal belongings and is not at all subtle about wanting money whenever possible, but she draws the line at taking someone's life. Well, save for one exception.
* ExtraOreDinary: Metal Elemental, possibly due to her use of a motor vehicle and stubborness. She also deals Metal damage over time with the Elemental Burst item.
* FlashStep: ''Freedom Planet 2'' gives Carol a chakram disc that she can jump over to mid-toss.
* FourthWallObserver: She has a tendency to break the fourth wall at times. She:
** Gives many an AsideGlance in reaction to her and Lilac's excessive cuteness during Milla's introduction.
** Asks "Why are we stopping?" in one of her idle animations.
** Asks the player if they saw how awesome she was in her stage results.
** Steals Brevon's textbox colors just before the final battle
** Addresses the player to thank them for playing during the credits.
** Mirrors the fans' reaction towards her gameplay trailer for ''Freedom Planet 2'', saying "Oh, I've been waiting a long time for this!". [[spoiler:Turns out this is her sentiment for Round 2 against Neera in the Battlesphere.]]
* GoodOldFisticuffs: Her main forms of attacking are claw swipes.
* GuestFighter: She's a playable racer in ''Super Indie Karts'', a racing game, alongside Lilac.
* HurricaneOfPuns: She can break out into this on occasion. Corazon really doesn't like it, [[spoiler:and even groans in frustration when Carol traps her in one in the ending]].
* HeterosexualLifePartner: With Lilac. They always stick together ever since their early days being part of the Red Scarfs.
* IllKillYou: Despite her agreement with Lilac that taking lives is going too far, she gives two instances of this between the two games. The first is when [[spoiler:Brevon mutates and forces her to fight Milla and she furiously refuses his offer to leave and threatens him.]] The second is even more serious. After [[spoiler:her fight with her sister and after making peace with her, Merga attempts to strike Carol down and forces Corazon to push her out of the way and take the blow. She gives a RapidFireNo at this, and upon seeing Merga, straight up threatens her with this verbatim before trying to tear her apart.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's snarky, greedy, and much less scrupulous than her best friend Lilac, and is not one willing to make quick friends, but despite that, deep down she's still a good-natured person and is more than willing to protect those she cares about from the danger.
* TheLancer: To Lilac's hero.
* LargeHam: "[[FlashStep GO!]]"
* NinjaRun: She runs in this manner in ''Freedom Planet 2''.
* NinjaPirateZombieRobot: A kung fu ninja wildcat on a motorcycle.
* OnceDoneNeverForgotten: In the sequel, [[spoiler:when she runs off on her own to try to talk down Corazon in the second act, Neera does ''not'' let her forget it even after she forgives her. In the ending, when Neera and Milla learn that Lilac's gone off on her own to try to find [[NeverFoundTheBody Merga]], she amusedly notes that she's "pulled a Carol", much to the latter's annoyance.]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Near the beginning of the game, she tells Spade that she'd rather be called a traitor than a murderer. But after seeing Brevon's cruelty, [[spoiler:particularly what he did to Milla]], she's willing to go back on that one. See her quote under ThisIsUnforgivable.
* PlayfulCatSmile: Bares one in some cutscenes and while she sits on a bench in-game. Rather appropriate for a cat.
* RageBreakingPoint: Happens at end of the second act of her route in ''Freedom Planet 2''. Poor Carol [[spoiler:tries her hardest to find her sister and talk her out of working with Merga, only to be knocked out by her via gas and stranded in the ocean with her worst favorite food, has to be taken out of her situation with SERPENTINE of all people, and gets back to find that Spade has run off with the Syntax drone. When Serpentine starts boasting about his plans with Bakunawa, Carol straight up tells him to shut up and hits him in the face before she yells about DONE she is with everyone just doing whatever they want without thinking about how others have to clean up their messes and how nothing has gone right for her. This quickly becomes a case of ExplainExplainOhCrap when she realizes she did the exact same thing she's upset at everyone else for when she ran off to try and save Cory on her own.]]
* RapidFireFisticuffs: Carol can string together rapid punches when she hits enemies successfully. Her Wild Kick is a kick-based version of this as well.
* RollingAttack: She can roll on the ground as a means of gathering speed and doing damage.
* RuleOfCool: Look at half the tropes here and it's obvious none of this should be physically possible.
* SpectacularSpinning: Can roll into a ball, has a spin kick, does a backflip on her motorcycle, and her disc throwing animation has her spinning like a boomerang.
* StealthPun: Appropriately for a hand-to-hand fighter, Carol Tea sounds suspiciously similar to ''karate''. It doesn't help that they share the same number of syllables (Car-Rol Tea/Ka-Ra-Te).
* StillWearingTheOldColors: Even though she cut ties with the Red Scarves, she, for unclear reasons, stills wears their signature GroupIdentifyingFeature: a red scarf.
* TenMinuteRetirement: Subverted. Despite threatening to leave Lilac [[spoiler:at the end of Jade Creek]] following [[spoiler:their argument]], she [[spoiler:and Milla pay the Red Scarves a visit to enlist Spade's help]].
* ThisIsGonnaSuck: Quotes this trope verbatim when [[spoiler:Captain Kalaw commandeers Beast Three with intent to take her down at Corazon's request]].
* ThisIsUnforgivable: Same with Lilac above.
-->'''Carol:''' What you did is unforgivable!\
'''Brevon:''' I have no use for forgiveness, especially from someone who puts my homeworld at risk for an oversized battery. I offer you one final chance. Leave. Now.\
'''Carol:''' [[BringIt NO! You're DEAD!]]\
'''Brevon:''' So be it.
* {{Tomboy}}: Has a snarky, brash, and boisterous attitude, rides a motorcycle, and wouldn't be caught dead wearing a dress. Torque even takes her for a guy at first.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Out of the main trio, she's the tomboy to the other two girly girls.
* WallJump: The only character to possess one, which makes up for her lack of any ability to gain additional height mid-jump. Her motorcycle elevates this to a full-on wall-''climb'', no jumping required. This coupled with the Jump Disc gives her considerable vertical mobility in the sequel.

[[folder:Milla Basset]]
[[quoteright:169:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character_milla.png]]
[[caption-width-right:169:"I'm a Super Dog!"]]
->''"I like being surprised!"''\
'''Voiced by:''' Aimee Smith

A very young, shy, and somewhat naive little hound dog. She's followed Lilac (after rescuing Carol) out of interest in meeting a real-life dragon, eventually formally teaming up with her. Milla specializes in magic attacks that create phantom blocks for her to throw and barriers that deflect projectiles.
----
* AlchemyIsMagic: Her bio in ''VideoGame/FreedomPlanet2'' says that these are the source of her powers, and she's taking a much bigger interest in it to where she can brew potions for her allies. Also, she attempted to find ingredients for her super feather potion before Shang Mu's army invades the Relic Maze to steal the kingdom stone.
* AlienAnimals: [[spoiler: It's revealed in Freedom Planet 2 that Milla comes from the same planet as Brevon and Serpentine, making her one of these.]]
* AmbidextrousSprite: Easier to see thanks to Milla wearing two different colors of accessories on each of her arms and legs.
* AgonyOfTheFeet: Whereas the other girls grind on rails using their shoes, Milla doesn't ''have'' shoes, instead having rump and all four bare paws on the rail as she rides it down. The wide-eyed, comically-pained expression she gives all the while implies it can't be pleasant.
* ArtEvolution: Milla's legs change to digitigrade -- as in, backward-kneed and standing on her toes -- from their previous plantigrade in ''Freedom Planet 2'', presumably so her [[RunningOnAllFours unique running animations]] work much more naturally.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: Her character bio on the game's website implies that she likes to chase shiny objects. When she successfully finds crystals in a dig, one of her quotes is an excited "Shiny!". The sequel has her going "oooooh!" when she gets an item from a chest.
* BabyTalk: Sometimes. Generally she speaks how a thirteen-year-old normally would, but there are points where her dialog is peppered with cutesy speech; especially when talking to herself. A good example includes when she interacts with her alchemy stand after the boss fight at Diamond Point [[spoiler:against Sergeant Askal]]:
-->'''Milla:''' I'm glad we helped out with the bulkans! Volcanoes going boom-boom would be bad-bad. [[spoiler:[[BigStupidDoodooHead Askal is a meaniebutt who pretended to be our friend]]. Maybe we should have made him go boom-boom instead.]]
* BadassAdorable: [[TheCutie Emphasis on adorable.]] Once one [[DifficultButAwesome learns how to play well as her]], Milla can and will utterly break the game. In the sequel, this is even more evident as Milla has now become more adept with her phantom block abilities on top of apparently learning some martial arts during the time skip (her idle animation even shows this, as it has changed from Milla just kind of standing nonchalantly in the first game to adopting a martial arts stance in the second). Also in the sequel, Neera is willing to vouch for Milla's competence despite Askal's dismissal.
-->'''Askal:''' You? Seriously?! You're practically a child!\
'''Neera:''' This "child" took down the android you've been chasing for the past week.\
'''Askal:''' Well, well, ''well.'' Aren't we the eager beaver? I've got my eye on you, kid.
* BareFistedMonk: Can use punches and kicks, noted to be [[AnimalThemedFightingStyle the Crane style]], in ''Freedom Planet 2''.
* BarefootCartoonAnimal: She's dressed fairly modestly, but, aside from some asymmetric anklets, goes around barefoot, even after getting a new outfit in-between games.
* BlushSticker: All but one of her portraits on the file select screen has them.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: [[spoiler:Brevon does this to her out of sheer spite.]] [[spoiler: Serpentine nearly does so in the sequel as well, but ThePowerOfFriendship prevents her from being brainwashed this time around.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: Between the three years separating the two games she has become far more outgoing and less timid in the sequel, as well as more confident. In addition, her story arc in 2 revolves around her coming to terms with her true nature and facing off against Serpentine.
* CheerfulChild: When she's not timid, she's basically this. Even moreso in the sequel, where she often makes excited remarks about the scenario they're in, even if it's a potentially dangerous one.
* ChildrenAreInnocent: She's only about ten years old, and her dialog certainly reflects it. For that matter, unlike Lilac and Carol, she's not at all trained in martial arts in the first game, instead preferring to throw objects at enemies or deflect their attacks with her shields. [[TookALevelInBadass The sequel does something about that.]]
* CompanionCube: Before she met Lilac and Carol, Milla's only friend was a tree stump with a face carved into it named Mr. Stumpy. The sequel reveals that [[CallBack she saved and moved him to outside the front of her house]].
* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: Based on her dialogue about brewing a feather potion to see her mom and dad in the sky, it's heavily implied that her parents are dead or missing. [[spoiler:In the sequel, Serpentine suggests they may in fact be alive and well back on Milla's homeworld but how truthful he's being is questionable.]]
* CowardlyLion: It's clear that she's absolutely ''terrified'' at the final boss stage with Brevon; but when given a chance to leave, she still stands her ground and fights him.
* CuteLittleFangs: Befitting her species, Milla has slightly longer canines which only add to her sheer cuteness. They're often most visible when she smiles.
* TheCutie: She's sweet, naive, and very huggable, which makes Lilac, Carol, and Torque protective of her.
* DeflectorShields: Milla can create a green barrier to deflect projectiles, as well as execute a short-ranged attack. Using it after generating a phantom block creates a larger, more powerful shield that can blow enemies away.
* DifficultButAwesome: In the first game, Milla has lower health, lacks the combo potential of the other characters, and doesn't have an immediately-usable mobility option outside of her slow Puppy Float. However, her cubes add to her momentum in any direction when used for a Super Shield Burst, allowing a skilled player to blast through the level at speeds that far surpass the others. Downplayed in the sequel: she can still fly around with skilled use of her Super Shield Burst, but she is much more friendly to play, as now she can shoot out little energy beams with her Shield Burst even without a cube for readily-available ranged attack (though they're stronger ''with'' a cube), she gains several melee attacks for immediate strong damage, cubes are generated with a single button press instead of a seconds-long button hold, and while her health pool is still smaller than the others', it's by a much smaller margin.
* DisneyDeath: [[spoiler:She is seemingly killed by Lilac or Carol in their story modes after Brevon makes her BrainwashedAndCrazy. Thankfully, it turns out to be non-fatal, she is nursed back to health after the climax, and she survives into the sequel.]]
* EarthyBarefootCharacter: [[https://www.deviantart.com/spaceystrife/art/Milla-the-Hound-Child-Sketch-by-R-No71-311455282 This character art]] that mentions she dislikes shoes also notes her strong connection to the earth in the same sentence. She also has a Wood element affinity in ''Freedom Planet 2''.
* EarsAsHair: Milla's ears closely resemble GirlishPigtails, hinting at her naivete and younger age.
* EarWings: She flops her ears (and her arms in the original) around as she tries to fly.
* EndearinglyDorky: In the sequel, while Carol and Lilac stand still, Milla takes a clumsy martial arts stance when she's not moving. Also, her "Puppy Float" has her waving her arms in ''1'' or doggy-paddling in ''2''. This even comes through in her dialog in the sequel; she occasionally peppers it with BabyTalk or GratuitousSpanish, and she proposes several creative but ''ridiculous'' ideas along the way, such as using a goofy stage name for the Battlesphere instead of just going as herself as the others do.
* FashionableAsymmetry: Milla's outfit is largely symmetrical, but she wears a green bracelet and orange anklet on her right side while wearing an orange bracelet and green anklet on her left.
* {{Flight}}: Milla uses her ears to propel herself in the air. Her Adventure Mode intro mentions a super feather potion that helps her fly, although it's unknown if she ever brewed it or ingested any.
* [[HumanAliens Furry Aliens]]: [[spoiler:The sequel reveals she's actually an extra-terrestrial, from the same planet as Serpentine and Brevon. Serpentine believes this gives her an "obligation" to side with him, but she disagrees.]]
* FurryReminder: In keeping with her species, she has keen senses of smell and hearing, can be easily distracted, whimpers and growls when she's hurt or scared, and displays a very dog-like loyalty to Lilac. In ''Freedom Planet 2'', one of her [[IdleAnimation idle animations]] also has Milla crouching and pawing the ground at her feet inquisitively -- much the same way a real-life dog would dig -- and sometimes does adorable little barks as part of some of her spoken lines. She'll even [[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/freedomplanet/images/6/6d/Milla_Belly_Rub.gif/revision/latest?cb=20191029223219 roll over on her back with her paws in the air and tail wagging]] in a "belly rubs" pose if she crouches for long enough.
* GirlishPigtails: Her ears resemble these.
* GirlsLoveStuffedAnimals: Two brightly-coloured plushie toys resembling Lilac and Carol can be seen sat on her bed at her laboratory in ''Freedom Planet 2''. [[spoiler:They even show up at the makeshift laboratory she set up in Bakunawa's Rest Area near the end of the game.]]
* GlassCannon: From a safe distance, Milla can deal damage approaching that of Lilac, but she has roughly half the health of the other characters (4HP vs. 7HP).
* GuestFighter: She's a playable character in the puzzle game ''VideoGame/PetalCrash'', something Libbie the Cyberoryx references in ''Freedom Planet 2''.
* JackOfAllStats: The sequel adds both direct melee attacks and a ranged rapid-fire attack to her existing move set. She still has less health (5 HP vs 6HP for the others), but the new additions make her a much tougher and more versatile character.
* GratuitousSpanish: Milla occasionally peppers her dialogue with Spanish sentences in the sequel:
-->'''Milla:''' ''(when Lilac and Carol visit her house)'' Please, come right in! ''Mi laboratorio es su laboratorio!'' [[note]]My laboratory is your laboratory![[/note]]\
'''Milla:''' ''(when talked to at her alchemy desk)'' Welcome to ''el laboratorio de Milla''! [[note]]Milla's laboratory![[/note]] With the power of ''SCIENCE'', I can make potions to help on your adventures!
* GreenAndMean: [[spoiler:Subverted. She has elements of green on her appearance and her energy-based moves have the same green coloring present on Brevon and his followers (since she's from the same planet as them), but she's firmly one of the good guys.]]
* GreenThumb: Wood Elemental, likely owing to her living in the forest by herself for as long as she can remember. Milla also deals Wood damage over time when equipped with the Elemental Burst item.
* HappilyAdopted: By Lilac and Carol, though the latter was a little reluctant at first.
* IdiotHair: While she's still as smart as ever, Milla's redesign in the second game has a small cowlick added to the top of her hair, fitting her quirkier and more upbeat personality in the sequel.
* InelegantBlubbering: Being the youngest of the team, Milla has probably the saddest reaction when she's on the first game's [[GameOver Continue screen]]. She curls into a TroubledFetalPosition, and completely covers her face while shaking and sobbing as if she's having a panic attack.
* InformedSpecies: She doesn't really look much like a dog at all, especially in light of the designs of several of the other dogs in the sequel. The sequel lampshades this at one point, with Igor mistaking her for a rabbit as many fans have done. [[spoiler:It's eventually revealed that she's an alien unlike them, however, which might explain her strange appearance.]]
* InUniverseCatharsis: [[spoiler:You can hear in the tone of her voice that she really did like blasting Serpentine's face in after his final battle on the Bakunawa. Given what he put her through during ''2'', can you blame her?]]
* LuminescentBlush: Her idle animation in the first game if a player waits too long without moving; she sheepishly glances at the screen and [[ThroughAFaceFullOfFur her face briefly turns pink through her fur]].
* MagicalBarefooter: Milla's alchemic abilities allow her to perform various magical feats, like concocting useful items for herself and her allies, or summoning green energy from nowhere through her hands (and feet, but only when kicking). She is also always barefoot.
* MechanicallyUnusualClass: In the first game, unlike Carol and Lilac, she has no melee attacks (having to rely on shields or phantom blocks she creates to damage her enemies), doesn't have a simple way to get to top speed as quickly as Carol and Lilac can, and can also use her ears to fly, although the flight doesn't last very long, giving her a rather large [[DifficultButAwesome learning curve]]. The sequel gives her melee options and a multi-shot blaster to round out her options, allowing her a more aggressive combat style.
* MoralityChain: To Neera, in a way. While Neera's relationship with Lilac and Carol is pretty strained due to their criminal pasts, by contrast she gets along well with Milla and treats her with care, [[spoiler:even helping to heal her after Brevon mutates her]]. In the sequel, [[spoiler:when Neera is in the midst of a HeroicBSOD following Merga taking over Shang Tu and is lashing out at everyone around her, it's Milla who ultimately calms her down]]. Neera is also the first to speak in her defense when Serpentine reveals [[spoiler:the truth of her origins as a being from Brevon's planet.]]
* NiceGirl: Milla first meets Lilac and Carol by [[BigDamnHeroes saving the latter from being buried alive in a collapsing cave]], and she has a very friendly personality.
* NightmareFuelStationAttendant: Sometimes Milla's language and proposed solutions cross the line separating cute from creepy. Take, for instance, this idea she has to save Parusa from a volcanic eruption.
-->'''Milla:''' Oh! Oh! We could blow a hole in the side of the volcano! Then all that lava will plap plap into the ocean and nobody gets turned into charcoal!\
[[spoiler:'''Spade:''']] Okay, one: you're dark. Two: you want to stop a volcano by blowing it up?\
'''Lilac:''' She's not wrong. That lava is coming out one way or another, so we might as well do it in a way that's safe. Well, safe-ish.
* TheNoseKnows: Has a keen sense of smell. This is used in a few instances in cutscenes, such as finding the meeting point for General Gong when Torque's tracker isn't working and [[spoiler:Lilac when the gang finds her in Thermal Base, as well as after they're separated again when the base explodes]].
* NotQuiteFlight: By flapping her ears while rapidly pedalling her arms and legs much like [[VideoGame/YoshisIsland Yoshi]], Milla can hover through the air for a few seconds.
* NotSoAboveItAll: In spite of her usual fear of danger, Milla gets humorously excited by the prospect of competing in the [=BattleSphere=] in the sequel; even [[RedBaron coming up with her own stage name]].
-->'''Milla:''' It'll be fun! I'm going to enter as [[SdrawkcabAlias Allim]], the Masked Marauder with a Mysterious Past!
* OhCrap:
** During her path in the first game, she's completely and utterly terrified when it comes time for her to fight Brevon. Even so, [[CowardlyLion when Brevon offers her a chance to flee, Milla refuses to back down]], vowing not to let the despotic warlord get away with his crimes.
-->'''Brevon:''' I offer you one final chance. Leave. Now.\
'''Milla:''' I... can't. '''[[BringIt I WON'T!]]'''
** When Neera informs the trio that they're going to the palace in the sequel, Milla panics and tries to change the conversation topic to a failed color-changing potion. Neera didn't come in regards to that, but insists that Milla file a report on that anyway.
* OneWingedAngel: [[spoiler:If you're not playing as Milla, Brevon transforms her into a twisted, scorpion-like monster for a boss battle at the climax. [[MamaBear Lilac in particular does]] ''[[MamaBear not]]'' [[MamaBear take kindly to him doing that to her]].]]
* PowerPalms: In the sequel, she can rapidly blast opponents in melee range in this manner, or break micro cubes off a stored phantom cube for a ranged option.
* PreciousPuppy: Take one look at her, and you can tell she's definitely this! For extra points, her last name (Basset) is likely based off of the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basset_Hound Basset Hound]].
* PrefersGoingBarefoot: She is barefoot at all times in both games, owing to a dislike of shoes explicitly noted [[https://www.deviantart.com/spaceystrife/art/Milla-the-Hound-Child-Sketch-by-R-No71-311455282 in the description of this character art for her]].
* RecoilBoost: Milla's Super Shield Burst can propel her in a RocketJump-like fashion to let her glide further/higher or give her a speed boost, depending on how it's used.
* RunningOnAllFours: Her full running animation has her doing this. [[RuleOfCool Don't ask how it works with what amounts to a human's leg structure in the first game;]] it looks cool, so just roll with it. The sequel alters her legs from plantigrade to digitigrade so it looks more natural.
* SarcasmBlind: Fails to catch Brevon's obvious sarcasm when he "apologizes" after "realizing" that his actions cause suffering to others.
-->'''Brevon:''' My actions have hurt people? [[SarcasmMode I had no idea. I'm dreadfully sorry.]]\
'''Milla:''' (''confusedly'') Really?\
'''Carol:''' He's lying!
* ScienceHero: Her abilities are alchemical in nature, and in the sequel she has expanded her scientific abilities to create many useful potions and items for the heroes.
* ShrinkingViolet: She's incredibly shy toward people she doesn't know. Appears to have grown past this in the sequel, as she treats Askal, Aaa, and Kalaw with cheerful enthusiasm and confidence.
* SophisticatedAsHell: In the sequel her vocabulary has dramatically expanded as a result of her alchemical and general studies (she seems to have an above average understanding of machines and other complicated topics as well), which contrasts pretty sharply with her BabyTalk habit.
* ThisIsGonnaSuck: She is not pleased to learn [[spoiler:just how little Aaa knows about dinosaurs in the epilogue]].
* TokenHeroicOrc: [[spoiler:She may be an extraterrestrial from the same planet as Brevon and Serpentine, but she's nowhere near as villainous as either of them and is as sweet as can be.]]
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Milla is one of two girly girls, along with Lilac, to Carol's tomboy.
* TookALevelInBadass: The three years since her incredibly shy debut have been used for badass grinding, and it shows; she now has control over her powers to the point she can now launch micro cubes at will as her primary attack, has learned a few basic martial arts techniques (complete with a crane stance), and got a bit tougher in the hit point department to boot.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: As revealed in Fortune Night, Milla loves to eat Sushi. In the post-level cutscene, she gets very excited at being served a big helping of it at Shang Mu City Hall.
* TransformationHorror: [[spoiler:In Lilac and Carol's routes, Brevon kidnaps and forcibly mutates Milla into a monstrous, scorpion-esque form, purely out of spite. Even though she survives and has the form undone, she's still [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone horrified at and incredibly guilty about attacking her friends]].]]
* TraumaButton: Her encounter with [[spoiler:and horrific mutation at the hands of]] Brevon scarred her grievously despite her friends and passing years healing and fortifying her, as [[spoiler:when Serpentine falsely states that Brevon has returned in the sequel, any bravado she built up is ''gone'']].
* {{Tykebomb}}: [[spoiler:Serpentine reveals in the sequel that she was ''intended'' to be this until she wound up alone in the forests of Avalice's Valley Region [[NoodleIncident due to an unknown incident]] that happened before the events of the first game.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: To Lilac. [[spoiler:When Lilac goes off to rescue Torque on her own, she tries to follow her, only for Lilac to refuse because she doesn't want to put her in danger.]]
* VerbalTic: In the second game, she tends to say "Ponder..." when thinking to herself about something.

A shellduck that Lilac rescues after he crashes nearby. He quickly informs her of an attempted robbery of the Kingdom Stone. Still, despite this knowledge, there's something off about him -- not least of which is the oddity of a ''turtle'' having a duck bill...

Torque was planned to have a dedicated story campaign in the first game, but ultimately didn't receive one in the final product before work on the sequel started. He was, however, developed enough to have some beta gameplay to work with.
----
* AFormYouAreComfortableWith: [[spoiler:His "Shellduck" form is actually just a disguise he takes to not draw any suspicions from people on Avalice. Besides a brief confusion from Lilac, no one has questioned his disguise, so seems like it works.]]
* BraveScot: Almost the opposite, as Torque is a very unsure and nerve-wracked character. He eventually reveals why in a cutscene: [[spoiler:he suffered the total loss of his former crew at the hands of Lord Brevon, and doesn't want to repeat that tragedy]].
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Not only does he not show up in the sequel, nobody ever mentions Torque. As if he never existed in the first place.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: Just before the Fortune City stage, Torque is presented with a biplane and asked if he knows how to fly it, to which he reluctantly says yes. Upon takeoff, he immediately crashes through a wall and smashes through an enemy.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: [[spoiler:He's gone on presumably many space-faring adventures to fight against Brevon sometime before the game started.]]
* ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies: [[spoiler:While he does bring the girls along to help him stop Brevon, at the end of Battle Glacier, he decides to have them retake Shuigang instead of infiltrating the Dreadnought, as he doesn't want to lose them like he did with his former crew at Brevon's hands. He quickly changes his mind after they tell him that they're with him to the end.]]
* LateArrivalSpoiler: His campaign's first stage alone [[spoiler:is Starport Horizon, which is shown as a futuristic city, and without his "Shellduck" disguise, revealing that he's an alien]].
* LittleGreenMen: [[spoiler:Torque is a green alien whose choice of weapon is a RayGun, although he's wholly benevolent.]]
* MartialPacifist: His bio on the game's website notes that he will avoid fighting whenever possible. Nevertheless, he does have his blaster, which -- according to [[http://galaxytrail.com/freedomplanet/characters.htm the official website]] and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QmED9MJTN0 hacking into the game]] -- can change elements depending on what orb crystals you acquire.
* MechanicallyUnusualClass: His playable incarnation, like Milla, lacks melee and thus is much more long-range based, and he has an ammo system. You also get to pick and choose which weapons he gets before the start of a stage.
* MixAndMatchCritters: He's a duck with a shell; a turtle with a beak. Either way you slice it, there's ''some'' kind of species-melding going on here. [[spoiler:This is largely because it's a flimsy disguise. Nobody particularly questions it, however, barring some snark from Lilac.]]
* TheOneGuy: In the first game, he's the sole male member of Team Lilac.
* PutOnABus: He doesn't appear in the sequel [[spoiler:since he's still pursuing Brevon after the events of the first game]].
* TheSmartGuy: He fulfills this role of TheTeam compared to the other three heroines.
* SquishyWizard: Based on the beta DLC, Torque's got ''less'' HP than Milla (3HP).
* SupportingLeader: The three heroines spend the majority of the game helping him out; after they initially save him, he leads them in their efforts to stop the theft of the Kingdom Stone [[spoiler:and to stop Lord Brevon, who stole it to fuel his campaign of galactic conquest]].

An advisor of the Royal Magister with trust issues. While she is versatile with elemental weaponry, she prefers her Frost Arts as a less-lethal force.
----
* AllThereInTheManual: The ''Freedom Planet'' website states that she is actually a royal priestess of ''Shuigang'' who closely served the king until his death, but she recently defected to Shang Tu and allied herself with the Royal Magister in a desperate effort to help knock some sense into the power-mad Prince Dail. None of this is mentioned in the final game or her ''Freedom Planet 2'' bio, so it's possible this is outdated info from earlier development leftover on the site (other character profiles noticeably changed over time).
* BreakoutCharacter: She was one of the more popular bosses and characters in the first game, despite being mostly just an obstacle for the protagonists. In ''2'', she's one of the playable characters and working with the heroes.
* BlackAndWhiteInsanity: Downplayed. She views Lilac and her friends as nothing more than criminals regardless of what good deeds they do, but is willing to work with them when there are larger threats to deal with.
* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: Both Neera and Torque are leaders in high positions of power and hold a good deal of authority, and both join Lilac on her adventures. Torque is easy to approach and has a decent sense of humor whereas Neera is a paranoid DeadpanSnarker who treats unfamiliar people with suspicion. Torque couldn't care less about Lilac and Carol's criminal history, while Neera continues to hold it over their heads all the way to the sequel.
* TheCynic: Is outright stated in her character bio to have a cynical view of the world, and it's reflected in her distrustful nature in the first game. Though she's on good terms with the team in the sequel, she's often the first to act with the assumption that something bad could happen.
* DeadpanSnarker: In ''2'', claiming the contents of a chest may be greeted with a deadpan "[[FlatJoy Oh, joy.]]" in comparison to the other girls' more excited cries.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Zigzagged. While she's officially on the girls side after the events of Pangu Lagoon in the first game, she still takes a bit ''too'' much joy in reminding Lilac and Carol of their criminal pasts.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Still not a warm person by any means, but working with Team Lilac over the course of the sequel has her become more willing to open up to them in little ways, even bantering with the group on several occasions.
* {{Determinator}}: In the first game, [[spoiler:when Lilac, Carol, and Milla bust out of jail, she hunts them down to put them back behind bars]].
* DishingOutDirt: As Ice isn't one of the Chinese elements, she's officially Earth Elemental, which isn't too far off from her centered, down to earth personality. This also means she deals Earth damage over time with the Elemental Burst item.
* EnemyMine: In the sequel, [[spoiler:when Serpentine and his army attack Nalao Lake, she's the first one to propose a truce with Aaa to deal with them together.]]
* FatalFlaw: Her obsession with law and order. Neera firmly believes that ''all'' criminals, regardless of their circumstances or how long ago their crimes were, ''must'' face punishment for what they did. As a result, she deeply resents how Lilac and Carol's criminal pasts were quietly swept under the rug by the Magister.
* GuestFighter: She appears in ''Duelists of Eden'' as a playable character, a ''VideoGame/MegaManBattleNetwork'' inspired player vs player focused game.
* HairTriggerTemper: [[spoiler:Between Askal and Kalaw’s betrayals, Merga taking over Shang Tu, and Carol running off on her own to try and talk sense into Corazon, Neera spends most of the sequel’s second act with a ''very'' short fuse. By the time the girls reunite in Parusa, it’s all Lilac can do to stop her from wringing Carol’s neck on the spot.]]
* IceBreaker: When playable in ''2'', she can easily crush enemies she's frozen if she's not using them as platforms.
* AnIcePerson: Her weapon is a staff that generates ice. Her [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWQ5yHGyoMA FP2 gameplay trailer]] shows her using this weapon to devastating effect.
* ImproperlyParanoid: When Team Lilac and Torque attempt to explain to Magister the threat posed by Brevon, complete with providing the evidence in form of one of his machine fragments, Neera immediately accuses them of lying, basing it on the fact that Lilac and Carol are thieves who were aligned in the past with the Red Scarves, a group responsible for the Kingdom Stone's theft on Mayor Zao's behalf. She then deduces that they are criminals and spies who were bribed by Zao to come up with a cover-up story to justify the Stone's theft, which results in the Royal Magister locking the team in prison, with Torque and his evidence put into quarantine. Not only this results in Team Lilac losing hope in gaining Shang Tu and the Magister's trust, but they end up attempting to take the matter into their own hands, culminating in Torque's capture by Brevon, and Lilac's kidnapping and horrific Cold-Blooded Torture, also by Brevon. In the sequel, she managed to [[PragmaticHero weaponize it with Milla’s help, keeping a close eye on everything around her despite their behavior and who they are, as long as they aren’t Team Lilac.]]
* InSeriesNickname: Carol often refers to her as "Scary Lady" in the sequel due to her cold attitude.
* InspectorJavert: Lilac and Carol are ''former'' thieves, but Neera doesn't care.
* JerkassHasAPoint:
** She wasn't exactly tactful about it, but much of her suspicions of the heroines in the first game are justified. [[spoiler:Lilac and Carol are thieves who have terrorized Shang Mu in the past, and they were former Red Scarves (and in Lilac's case, possibly romantically involved with their leader). She also drew suspicions from the fact that they just happened to know about a surprise attack just before it happened.]]
** When Carol suggests they bribe Corazon into joining them in the sequel, Neera shuts it down under the belief that Corazon being motivated solely by money makes her inherently untrustworthy, which everyone agrees with.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's extremely unpleasant in the first game and treats only the Royal Magister with any form of respect. However, she appears to have developed the "Heart of Gold" part in the sequel. It's true she still holds Lilac and Carol's past over their heads, but she's among the first in line to vouch for them when Askal questions the Magister getting them involved, and cooperates with them readily, even having some NotSoAboveItAll moments. For as cold as she is, she's also shown to genuinely and thoroughly value the safety of Avalice and its people.
* LawfulStupid: She's an overzealous lawwoman who refuses to trust Lilac on the basis that she was part of the Red Scarves, even when they bring her proof that there is a dangerous enemy that threatens them all. She's far more reasonable in the sequel, however - despite still holding Lilac and her friends' criminal pasts over their heads, she is willing to trust them with handling their duties, and her making hasty conclusions about others is at best rooted in pragmatic thinking, and at worst presented as an OutOfCharacterMoment born from her becoming distrustful and upset due to the betrayal of her former allies.
* MightyGlacier: [[{{Pun}} Ice puns aside]], Neera's gameplay in the sequel is more combat-oriented than the other three, meaning she has less mobility options and more attacks with longer windup times. That being said, she hits ''hard'' when her attacks connect.
* MundaneUtility: Neera's ice staff can freeze the ground so she can skate across it. This applies to open bodies of water as well, as a screenshot from the second game demonstrates.
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: Part of her arc in the second game is based in her conflicting loyalty and trust after the crimes of the Magister's people are brought to the surface. She soon asserts that, while the choice of duty is hard, and while her choices may not necessarily be seen as the "right" ones, she stands by her values and by the person who helped her.
* NoSympathy: When arresting Lilac for the second time, even though she clearly saw that Lilac was horribly wounded from [[spoiler:Brevon's torture]] and was experiencing a panic attack, she still gives her the same cold treatment as before.
* NotSoAboveItAll: While ostensibly working with the team to stop Merga and maintaining her aloofness, moments like her taunting the enemies ("You're pathetic!") and smirking when obtaining treasure ("I'm confiscating this") shows she's having some fun after all. [[spoiler:After Merga takes over Shang Tu, Neera freaks out after Gong helps the heroes escape the palace [[UnstoppableRage and immediately attempts to rush back there to fight Merga herself]] only to be held back by the others.]]
* OfferedTheCrown: [[spoiler:At the end of the sequel, with the Magister deciding to step down, he asks Neera to take over as Regent of Shang Tu until an official democratic election can be held for a replacement/successor.]]
* OnlySaneWoman: Due to having to watch over Team Lilac in the sequel, she appears to serve this role for much of the game- often expressing frustration or annoyance at the characters' sillier antics, as well as being the first to insist they focus on the task at hand. Notably, she juggles this role with Lilac herself, partly because her comparative sanity is balanced out by her irrationality and anger in the second half of the game.
* PetTheDog: In spite of her generally low opinion on Team Lilac, she ''did'' nurse Milla back to health after her NearDeathExperience from [[spoiler:being mutated by Brevon]] once the team returned back to Avalice from the destroyed Dreadnought.
* PoliceAreUseless: She's the chief of Shang Tu Police Department, and in the first game, she was more of a hindrance than help, refusing to acknowledge Torque's evidence of Brevon's existence and intentions, and instead trying to get Lilac and her friends arrested for their criminal pasts. Even after their names were cleared, she didn't do much, instead serving only as non-action MissionControl. Averted in the sequel, where she is actively fighting side-by-side with Team Lilac.
* PromotedToPlayable: Originally a mid-boss, she now joins the playable cast in ''Freedom Planet 2''.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Neera is a very competent fighter, and she wears a purple outfit.
* RageBreakingPoint: [[spoiler:She tries to hold in her frustration of losing Shang Tu to Merga and the ensuing betrayal by Askal back, but her response to Spade stealing the Syntax drone is to call King Dail and almost yell for him to wrench the drone back from Spade's hands immediately]]. She hits another one after [[spoiler:Carol returns and openly sides with Serpentine]].
* TheResenter: Promotional material for the sequel suggests that, despite officially being the girls' ally now, she deeply resents how their past criminal history was swept under the rug by the Magister, believing they should have been made to answer for what they did as Red Scarves.
* SixthRanger: Joins the already established Team Lilac to work full-time against the threat of Bakunawa in the sequel.
* StealthPun: She's a panda who views the law as [[BlackAndWhiteInsanity black and white]] and nowhere in between.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: She makes clear several times that she would rather see Lilac and the others rotting in a jailcell and isn't helping them by choice. The feeling is very mutual on their end as they don't want anything to do with her, but are forced to accept her help.
* TookALevelInKindness: While far from warm to the heroes, Neera appears more willing to accept and acknowledge Lilac as allies come the sequel. Though she expresses frustration at their antics and asserts that they should obey the law, she speaks in defense of their good deeds to others, and doesn't treat them with hostility so much as a sternness befitting of a duty-minded woman.
* UndyingLoyalty: To the Magister and Shang Tu in general. [[spoiler:Enough so in ''Freedom Planet 2'' that after her rage is quelled following Merga's hostile takeover, she becomes noticeably forlorn about her home being taken.]]
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: In the first game, had Neera not accused Lilac, Carol, and Milla of stealing, a lot of hardships could have been avoided, such as [[spoiler:Torque's capture, Lilac's torture, and Milla's mutation, all of which happened at Brevon's hands]].

The leader of the sky nation of Shang Tu. Considered wise and caring to his allies, but cold and deceitful to his enemies. However, he lacks war experience and is as such mostly helpless to do anything about the Kingdom Stone...
----
* AbdicateTheThrone: At the end of the sequel, [[spoiler:he voluntarily steps down as Regent of Shang Tu as part of his penance for the ancient Earth Dragons' genocide of the Water Dragons, and appoints Neera as his internim replacement until a democratic election can make it official.]]
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:After discovering the Earth Dragons' true nature as slavers and instigators of unjust genocide, he seeks to atone for the sins of his kind, trying to reason with Merga and apologize for the actions of his ancestors, and then steps down as the leader of Shang Tu, choosing to dedicate his life to [[WalkingTheEarth exploring Avalice]] while trying to uncover the lies of the Earth Dragons' false history.]]
* BerserkButton: A subdued variant, but he has a rather dim view of liars. [[spoiler:Lilac falsely confessing to being involved with Spade's theft is the reason he has her perform a mission in Pangu Lagoon before he officially gives her any help, even after Neera's initial accusations are proven false.]]
* BetrayalByInaction: [[spoiler:He was just a boy during the Earth Dragons' genocide of the Water Dragons and had no input in the act, but Merga holds him just as responsible as, in her mind, he got to just sit around in his "fancy palace" while her people were being slaughtered.]]
* BlueIsCalm: Personality-wise, he's very stoic and composed, and doesn't allow his emotions to cloud his judgement. Fittingly, his attire is clad in blue.
* CharacterNarrator: Of the game's intro, [[spoiler:and the ending in Adventure mode]].
* DramaticUnmask: In the second game, his helmet gets knocked off by Askal, revealing that, beneath the shadows cast by his helmet that obscure his face, he's actually [[spoiler:a pure-blooded earth dragon]].
* TheFaceless: He wears a helmet that completely obscures his face, other than his eyes. According to the developers, the reason behind this is because he is regarded as more of a divine voice than an individual. His old design, however, suggests that his appearance is that of a bird. [[spoiler:In actuality, he's a dragon.]]
* FakeAmerican: Like Milla, his voice actor, Edwyn Tiong, is Australian.
* {{Irony}}: [[spoiler:Merga, Askal and Kalaw all believe he knew about the Water Dragon genocide from the start and actively worked to cover it up. However, it turns out that he was just as in the dark about his ancestors' crimes as everyone else was, and is genuinely horrified when he learns the truth.]]
* OurDragonsAreDifferent: [[spoiler:It's revealed during the second half of ''Freedom Planet 2'' that he is actually an earth dragon after his helmet is knocked off [[{{Shoryuken}} by an uppercut from Askal]].]]
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure:
** Of all leaders of the Three Kingdoms of Avalice, he's presented as the most reasonable one, contrasting Mayor Zao's short temper and theatrics and Dail's ([[BrainwashedAndCrazy brainwashment-induced]]) delusions, which is best shown when, [[spoiler:despite Neera's [[JerkassHasAPoint reasonable claims]], and Lilac (falsely) confessing to said claims to save Torque, he still has the metal of Serpentine's Robopanther mech examined just to be sure]].
** In the sequel, [[spoiler:when Merga first reveals the truth about the Water Dragon[=/=]Earth Dragon War and Lilac later confronts him over it, he initially tries to defend his ancestors' actions, claiming that they did what was necessary for their own survival. However, after doing research while the girls were destroying Bakunawa's beacons and learning what ''really'' happened in the war (namely that it wasn't a "war" at all and instead a one-sided genocide, with the ancient Earth Dragons [[WrittenByTheWinners covering up the history after winning]]), he is ''horrified'' and immediately changes his tune, recognizing that Merga has every right to be full of rage over what she's endured. This, combined with their reasons for joining her being surprisingly sympathetic, are what compels him to give Merga's minions a reduced sentence in the ending]].
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: [[spoiler:He's been around since Merga first attacked Avalice centuries ago.]]
* ShadowedFaceGlowingEyes: His face is completely obscured by shadow from his helmet, leaving only the eyes visible. [[spoiler:In the climax of the sequel, Askal knocks off his helmet, revealing his true face underneath.]]
* SinsOfOurFathers: [[spoiler:His grandfather is heavily implied to have been the main architect behind the Water Dragon genocide and its subsequent coverup, which explains Merga's extreme animosity towards him.]]
* TheStoic: He very rarely displays emotions and always maintains the same tone when speaking. The closest he had to a NotSoStoic moment was when he was shocked to learn that the Kingdom Stone was stolen by Zao.

The Royal Magister's most decorated soldier. Nicknamed after his signature weapon -- a large shield that reverberates like a gong when he slams into his targets.
----
* FailedASpotCheck: In his first appearance, he boasts that nothing gets past him. This is immediately followed up with Shang Mu's AwesomePersonnelCarrier (which is big for a truck but small for a building) ram-raiding the Kingdom Stone Temple from BehindTheBlack.
* FakeUltimateHero: As revealed in the sequel, the public believes him to be the hero who thwarted Brevon's invasion. Gong tried to explain that Lilac and her friends were the true heroes of the story, but the public doesn't acknowledge his words due to refusing to believe that a trio of young girls would be capable of such feat.
* TheGuardsMustBeCrazy: [[spoiler:When he comes across Carol, Milla, and Torque after they're separated from Lilac in Thermal Base, he doesn't antagonize them at all. Either he was informed beforehand that the Magister cleared their charges, or [[ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight he trusts them more than Neera did]].]]
* GuestStarPartyMember: He joins the girls for the first fight with Merga. Unfortunately, she knocks him out in no time.
* AHeroToHisHometown: It's revealed in the sequel that he's actually from Shuigang, and according to many [[NonPlayerCharacter NPCs]] he's very popular among the locals.
* HiddenBadass: Gong has a hearty chuckle when the girls (Carol notwithstanding) go to the Battlesphere, as if the mention of the place 'takes him back'. [[spoiler:Only when you get to Parusa do you have the chance to learn that he was a former Battlesphere ''champion''. Who knew, right?]]
* NiceGuy: A bit more arrogant and grumpy than most examples, but he's notably the only character from Shang Tu that doesn't show any major contempt towards the heroes (even addressing them as "my friends" during one instance).
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: His weapon is a large shield that resembles a gong. He can surf on it in the sequel as an actual attack.
* ThePigPen: Going off of this exchange:

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/ChristopherSabat

A high-ranking sergeant of Shang Tu's royal army. Taken from the official website: "As a half-mongrel, half-dragon from the southern islands, Askal was often ridiculed in the north for his mixed heritage. However, he took it as a personal challenge and spent his life training to become the strongest warrior in Avalice. Since the beginning, The Magister knew of his presence but remained skeptical until Askal volunteered recently to help fend off the creatures attacking Shang Tu. He has since been promoted twice and is a current ranking member of Shang Tu's army."
----
* ActorAllusion: His various attacks and movements are punctuated by Franchise/DragonBall-inspired sound effects.
* ADogNamedDog: He is named after his philippine dog breed, the ''askal''.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: In his backstory, Askal was often [[HalfBreedDiscrimination ridiculed for his mixed heritage]], but he took it as a personal challenge and pushed himself to become the strongest warrior in Avalice. [[spoiler:He's back to the grind after getting demoted and sentenced to janitorial duty for his hand in Merga's insurrection.]]
* TheBadGuyWins: ''Kind'' of? [[spoiler:In Neera's ending, she points out to him that, with the Magister stepping down, he technically achieved his goal of reforming the system. Askal, however, is skeptical that the Magister's replacement will actually be able to change anything, unaware that he's actually talking to the Magister's replacement right now.]]
* DiscardAndDraw: In his (optional) match in the Dojo, Askal is primarily a physical fighter, though he's able to use boulders to a small extent. [[spoiler: The match against him in Diamond Point has his stone powers magnified in comparison to his regular combat abilities, due to the composition of the place; as such, he's able to create cascades of rocks to rain down on the player character and manipulate three large gemstones to use to teleport with. His fight in the Refinery Room with Aaa has him losing the rock attacks (due to the room itself having no rocks to speak of), but exchanges it for a spiral of gemstones, which there are a load of.]]
* DishingOutDirt: As an Earth Dragon, naturally. In particular, he's also adept at manipulating [[GemstoneAssault gemstones]].
* DragonAncestry: Half-Earth Dragon, half-Askal.
* EvilCounterpart: [[spoiler:To Neera Li. While Neera stands by the Magister's words and aids him no matter the cause, Askal completely defects him upon learning about his earth dragon past and aids Merga in setting things right.]]
* FaceHeelTurn: [[spoiler:When Merga tells him the truth behind the ancient war between the Earth and Water Dragons, and especially the Magister's apparent role in it, he turns against the heroes, determined to bring the Magister to "justice" for his role in the Water Dragon genocide.]]
* FreudianExcuse: Askal's spent nearly his entire life facing persecution and discrimination both for being a commoner and for being a half-breed, [[spoiler:so when Merga offered him a chance to change things so that people like him would have more of a place in society, he leapt at it.]]
* IfICantHaveYou: [[spoiler:His pre-fight cutscene with Neera has shades of this. First, he tries to persuade her by telling her that she doesn't have to be lonely and isolated if she joins him. She turns Askal down and he comments that he felt a "connection" with her, which she retorts that said connection was the trust that he betrayed. He doesn't take it too well...]]
* IronicEcho: In Lilac’s story, [[spoiler:after his first boss fight, he warns her that one day she'll have to "face reality" and realize that societal outcasts like them will never truly be accepted and that changing the system like Merga claims to want to is the only way that will truly change. Fast forward to his and Aaa’s final defeat in Bakunawa’s refinery, and Lilac throws his “facing reality” line right back in his face over Merga having lied to ''him'' about her plans for the moon]].
* {{Jerkass}}: Downplayed. While he is eager to protect Shang Tu with the rest of the force [[spoiler:(at first)]], he is particularly dismissive of the heroes, save Neera, when they first meet. Take this line from his encounter with Carol.
-->'''Askal:''' Hmph! The Magister must be desperate if he's taking in strays.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: A small dog NPC, Kiara, speaks positively of Askal and notes how he helped take care of her. After [[spoiler:his betrayal,]] she tells the player character that she knows he isn't a bad person. In addition, one can speak to Askal at the bar, in which he'll gruffly yet amicably recount to you his own experiences in Shang Tu.
* KnightTemplar: [[spoiler:Even after his allegiance to Merga is revealed, he continues to claim that he's the "true" hero of the story, working to bring a "war criminal" to justice and restore Avalice's "rightful" ruler back to her throne.]]
* TheMole: [[spoiler: One of Merga's two, serving as her eyes inside the Shang Tu Palace. He only reveals his true colors once Merga invades the palace and the Magister's back is against the wall.]]
* NotSoDifferentRemark: [[spoiler:Gives one to Lilac in her version of Diamond Point, pointing out that they're both outcasts largely rejected by society.]]
* NotWhatISignedUpFor: [[spoiler:He joined up with Merga because he genuinely believed the Magister had a key role in the Water Dragon genocide (it turns out the Magister was just a kid when it happened), and because Merga promised she would give half-breeds like him more of a say in politics if he helped her. She never told him about her plan to ravage Avalice by destroying the moon, and as such is easily convinced to turn himself in after his defeat.]]
* PowerFist: His gauntlets, which he utilizes for GroundPound and RapidFireFisticuffs attacks.
* PurpleIsPowerful: He's strong enough to have been promoted twice, and he wears purple accessories.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: While he's not thrilled working with Team Lilac, he is dismissive of Milla purely because of her age. Milla is a dog[[spoiler:-like alien]] who emits green energy from her hands and forms cubes from said energy [[spoiler:who may or may not be a product of Brevon's war-dog bioengineering program]] that helped fight off Brevon's invasion three years prior. Then he fights her at Diamond Point, thinking her an easy mark.

Cordelia becomes upset at herself after recognizing the irony.]]
* LipstickLesbian: Considering she's a feminine princess who was [[spoiler:in love with a water dragon warrior]], yeah.
* MasculineFeminineGayCouple: With [[spoiler:Merga]], being the feminine of the pair.
* PosthumousCharacter: She only appears via holographic recordings (and in some street art), having passed away a long time ago. [[spoiler:However, the GoldenEnding reveals that she's still alive.]]
* SignificantDoubleCasting: Shares her voice actress with Syntax and Pangu. The developers have implied in supplementary material that this is intentional, but as of this edit nothing in either game tells us exactly why.
* StarCrossedLovers: With [[spoiler:Merga]], who she explicitly calls her love in the [[spoiler:golden ending]].
* YouAreACreditToYourRace: [[spoiler:She referred to Perlas as "one of the good ones" for agreeing with her that Perlas' fellow Water Dragons should be more grateful for all the Earth Dragons have provided for them. 452The leader of the forest metropolis of Shang Mu. He has something of an ego, is very militaristic, and is ''very'' much obsessed with wealth.
----
* CompensatingForSomething: His hat is roughly the size of his body, and has a large character for "chief" printed on the front, reflecting his status as TheNapoleon.
* DeadpanSnarker: Quite.
-->'''Mayor Zao:''' An alliance with Shang Tu? [[SarcasmMode What a lovely idea]]! 'Oh, hey Magister! Sorry about ambushing your soldiers and desecrating your temple! Let's go frolicking in the woods together with our makeup and pretty dresses!' [[LampshadeHanging +5 Sarcasm]]
* {{Egopolis}}: As revealed in the sequel, he has his own ''theme park'' and ''entertainment company''.
* {{Greed}}: In a big way. This makes him ''very'' easy to manipulate.
* ItsAllAboutMe: He has statues made in honor of his greatness, and his name and likeness plastered all over his city.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: For all his bad traits, Zao's dialogue shows that he cares very much about resolving his kingdom's energy crisis. Also, he helps the heroes out after Stage 3 by providing them with a royal dinner and one of his airships.
* MayorPain: Many problems were caused by his greediness.
* TheNapoleon: In spite of his huge ego, he's kind of short; his dialogue portrait in ''2'' isn't even eye-level like every other character's, with most of it being filled by [[CompensatingForSomething his huge hat]].
* PermanentElectedOfficial: His ''Freedom Planet 2'' profile suggests that he might have been elected through less-than-democratic means. On the other hand, the city genuinely flourished during his tenure, and he has shown trepidation at his looming re-election in the first game (albeit for comedic effect).
* RunningGag: His +5 stat boost jingle.
* TemptingFate: For all his ego, he has a tendency to put his foot in his mouth, particularly in the sequel.

* LargeHamAnnouncer: As the "Hunk behind the Mic", he adds quite a bit of commentary to combat in the Battlesphere.
* YourPrincessIsInAnotherCastle: After the Battlebot Battle Royale ends, he answers Lilac just when she thinks they've got their ticket to ride with Kalaw.

The leader of the water city of Shuigang. His father has recently been murdered, leaving him both in power and ''quite'' eager to get revenge, going so far as to contact his criminal brother Spade for assistance.
----
* AntiVillain: He was forced to watch his father's decapitation before being brutally {{Brainwashed}} into Brevon's ranks. Poor guy.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Brevon brainwashes him in the opening cinematic. As such, in spite of his eagerness to find his father's killer, he is blissfully ignorant of the fact that he's directly working for the man.
* ClimaxBoss: His fight near the end of the game can be quite challenging, pulling out some tricky-to-avoid and devastating attacks.
* DealWithTheDevil: With Brevon. Not that he had any say in the matter.
* DeathDealer: It's much more subtle, but he will use cards for a couple of his attacks, much like his brother. By the time of ''Freedom Planet 2'', he's apparently stopped utilizing his old cards due to them bringing to mind memories of his father.
* DramaticIrony: He has no idea that he's working for the man that murdered the king. Or, to be more accurate, [[TheDarkSideWillMakeYouForget brainwashed into believing Brevon wasn't.]]
* ExtraOreDinary: Metal elemental, as befitting a firm, stalwart king. Or, in the first game, a steadfast unwilling minion to Brevon. Appropriately, he always protects himself with a Metal Shield when given the opportunity.
* ExtremeMeleeRevenge: [[spoiler:When Spade steals the Syntax drone after aiding the heroes against Merga with intel, he runs into King Dail not long after, and is subsequently taken off the board.]]
-->'''Dail:''' "...I had not thanked you properly for [[spoiler:your assistance in Shuigang]]. So I brought this magnificent gift... (''unrolls green carpet to reveal...'') [[spoiler:... and this worthless scoundrel of a brother]]."\
'''[[spoiler:Spade:]]''' "[[spoiler:Urgh... he busted me up good.]]"
* FlashStep: Again, like his brother. He only ever uses it in cutscenes, however.
* TheGoodKing: As the sequel shows, when he's not brainwashed by Brevon, Dail is actually a fair and just ruler who truly has the best interests of Shuigang and its people in mind, and proves himself to be a valuable ally to the heroes and the people of Shang Tu. He even supposedly assists them by sending Spade to help Team Lilac with stopping Merga's forces, but when Spade double-crosses them by leaving them on their own and stealing Syntax, Dail, upon being notified of it by Neera (who realizes that Dail never sent Spade in the first place and that the younger brother was lying to them), immediately follows up on his earlier words that he'll bust up his brother for treachery, regardless of what familial ties they may have.
* HeroesPreferSwords: By the time of the sequel, he now wields a sword but he's never shown using it in battle on-screen.
* KnightTemplar: When brainwashed by Brevon, he deluded himself into believing himself to be on the righteous side of the conflict, constantly preaching that his enemies chose the wrong side.
-->'''Dail:''' You will face justice! Surrender!\
'''Lilac:''' Not a chance! / '''Carol:''' Fat chance, buster! / '''Milla:''' I... I can't! I won't! / '''Torque:''' Gosh, that sounds really tempting but, umm... no thank you.\
'''Dail:''' So, you have chosen death? How pathetic!
* LargeHam: See above.
* LightIsNotGood: During his BossBanter, he prattles on about justice. Furthermore, a couple of his major abilities involve unleashing rays of light. Possibly subverted, however, as he is BrainwashedAndCrazy.
* RevengeBeforeReason: His first duty may be to his country above all else, but he'd be all too happy to find his father's killer while he's at it.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: He has absolutely no problems getting personally involved in the fighting, and is quite capable of booting your rear to the ground.
* TranquilFury: [[spoiler:When he hears from Neera that Spade made off with the Syntax drone for money, he is... displeased, to say the least. Once you return to the abandoned Shang Tu Palace in preparation for the final raid on Bakunawa, he and his troops bring a green rug with Spade wrapped up inside.]]
->''...I am going to bust him up good.''
* TraumaButton: A conversation snippet from the second game reveals that the trauma of the first game has caused him to disfavor his capture cards; he hasn't used them at all for the past three years. Also, upon seeing inactive Syntax, he was immediately reminded of traumatic memories of witnessing his father's death.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: [[spoiler:After his defeat at Battle Glacier, Spade pursues him while the heroines board Brevon's starship. The sequel shows that he came to his senses in-between games and has returned to his position.]][[note]]Planned DLC for the first game involving Spade's story likely would have shown what happened, but the DLC was cancelled.[[/note]]
* YinYangBomb: A couple of his attacks are preceded with a yin-yang ball of energy.
* YouKilledMyFather: His impetus for getting involved in the growing hostilities is to avenge his father's death for his people.

->''"You just had to follow me here, didn't you?"''
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/SeanChiplock

An enigmatic panda who likes to attack with explosive playing cards. Son of the recently-murdered King of Shuigang, although ''not'' next in line for the throne -- which is fine by him, as he's a criminal who prefers to stay out of the limelight. Has something of a history with Lilac and Carol, although they are not presently on good terms.

Like Torque, Spade was also intended to receive a DLC campaign that fleshed him out some more and would've resolved some of the loose threads his presence brought up in the original game. However, this didn't happen, and unlike Torque, Spade's gameplay hadn't been polished enough for a beta release.
----
* AntiVillain: He's decidedly ''not'' a good guy, but his motivation is understandable enough.
* BashBrothers: He's this with Carol in the sequel with the two's personalities playfully bouncing off of one another and him actively assisting her on the field compared to how hands-off he is with Lilac, Milla, and Neera. He even earnestly extends an offer for Carol to join back up with the Red Scarves so they can keep being partners.
* BigDamnHeroes: It's implied he was the one responsible for sabotaging the Thermal Base as Carol and Milla enlisted his help before arriving at the base but he's nowhere to be found when they rescue Lilac.
* ConMan: A throwaway comment from Dail in the sequel mentions that Spade is a con artist in addition to being a thief.
* CoolShades: He wears a pair of red shades. In the first game, he has them hang on his forehead, but in the sequel, he finally lowers them down to eye level.
* DeathDealer: His primary weapon is a deck (or hundred) of surprisingly lethal playing cards.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Even though he's a remorseless criminal who is implied to be perfectly willing to murder if it advances his goals, he still cares about his father and half-brother, going to great lengths to avenge the former, and saves the latter from Brevon's brainwashment (as revealed in ''VideoGame/FreedomPlanet2'' website).
* FlashStep: Like any self-respecting ninja, he can dash on very high speeds using the Flash Jump ability.
* FragileSpeedster: It doesn't take many hits to bring him down, but he's fast and agile enough to make sure that it's (mostly) a non-issue.
* GetBackHereBoss: The biggest challenge of his battles is just trying to hit him in the first place. Particularly difficult as the short-ranged Carol (Milla is ranged, and Lilac's dash move can quickly close the distance ''and'' deal damage at the same time).
* HeelFaceTurn: While still a member of the Red Scarves, he's not an antagonist at all come the sequel, and is working directly with his brother Dail to help the heroines. When you meet him in the latter half of the game, he even sounds somewhat happy to see the group again, even if Lilac doesn't share the sentiment. [[spoiler:Though he does later betray the group by disappearing with Syntax on his hands.]]
* HiddenBackupPrince: Implied, given that he is the younger brother of the current ruler of Shuigang and prefers to hide out with ninjas and thieves, away from any attention. That being said, he has no desire to inherit the throne and avoided speaking about his situation with Lilac and Carol. [[AllThereInTheManual The website]] states that they are half-brothers, which may have something to do with it.
* IWasJustPassingThrough: In the end of Battle Glacier, he saves Lilac and her friends from Dail, who attempted to destroy them with a last-ditch attack. However, he clarifies that he was simply passing through before running off after Dail.
-->'''Spade:''' I hate to disappoint you, but I'm just passing through. Have fun saving the world.
* MeaningfulName: He's named after the suit of cards. Fitting for someone who uses [[DeathDealer playing cards]] as a primary weapon.
* OlderAndWiser: Come the sequel, he's mellowed out a bit and is more amicable with Lilac and friends.
* PlayingWithFire: Fire elemental. He embodies the restlessness, impulsiveness, and strength that represents in the first game, and starts to pick up on some of fire's more nurturing attributes by the sequel.
* PrecisionFStrike: A hidden blooper has Spade, after flubbing a bit of exposition regarding his brother, drop the only bit of profanity in the first game; censored or otherwise.
-->'''Spade:''' Prince Dail of Sh... Prince... (''sighs in an exasperated fashion'') It's just so hard to be cool and suave while being informative at the same time. '''Goddamn''' my coolness! [[note]]The "damn" is [[SoundEffectBleep beeped out]] in the game proper.[[/note]]
* ProfessionalKiller: A high-ranking member of the Red Scarves, an entire ''band'' of professional killers and thieves.
* TheRival: To Carol.
* TheUnfought: Played straight in the sequel. [[spoiler:The girls, particularly Neera, wanted to deal with him after he stole the Syntax drone, but he is taken off the board offscreen by King Dail.]]
* SignificantDoubleCasting: He's voiced by Creator/SeanChiplock, who also voices Prince Dail, his half-brother.
* TookALevelInCheerfulness: He’s noticeably less dour in the sequel compared to the first game. Justified as the first Freedom Planet took place shortly after his father's death at the hands of Brevon.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: [[spoiler:Spade and Prince Dail disappear after the events at Battle Glacier and aren't seen again. Part of Spade's DLC campaign was meant to focus on what happened to them.]]
* WeUsedToBeFriends: He used to work alongside Liliac and Carol in the Red Scarves prior to them leaving in part [[ThouShaltNotKill due to the two not willing to sink into the more immoral activities the Scarves]] were getting into [[spoiler:and in part due to learning Spade had stolen Lilac as an egg for the Scarves when he was younger.]] While he does manage to rekindle his friendship with Carol by the time of the sequel, his relationship with Lilac remains strained.
* YouKilledMyFather: His motivating factor is tracking down his father's killer. Carol exploits this to get his support after Trap Hideout.

[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pangu_sprite.png]]
->''[[AC:"Password accepted. Follow me."]]''
->'''Voiced by:''' Victoria Vitti

A security drone from the Ancient Times. She was found by Lilac during her mission to investigate the Pangu Lagoon for any hints connecting to Brevon's forces. Despite sharing the same body type with Syntax, she's not related to Brevon. She is capable of producing hard-light holograms, with her most notable ability being capable of taking the form of a giant dragon, known as Holodragon.
----
* AllThereInTheManual: Her name comes from the character cast on the official ''Freedom Planet 2'' website and other supplementary media. Before, she had no given name; in the CreativeClosingCredits, she was lumped together with Syntax under the same name.
* BackgroundBoss: As Holodragon, she is stationed primarily in the background, reaching out occasionally to swipe at the foreground with a huge claw, and Lilac is required to destroy as many orbs on the dragon's back as possible before finishing it off by [[GoForTheEye hitting it in the eye]].
* BenevolentAI: She is an ancient artificial intelligence that was built by [[BenevolentPrecursors ancient dragons]], and after being recovered, she serves as an ally to Lilac and co.
* BlueIsHeroic: In contrast to Syntax's black-and-green colorations, Pangu primarily uses white and blue colors, giving her a more pleasant and benevolent look. [[spoiler:Carol suggests using a coat of paint to make Syntax resemble Pangu to 'cheat' their way out of a hostage trade; Merga was not fooled, Kalaw notwithstanding.]]
* BreathWeapon: As the Holodragon, she periodically fires off a turbolaser blast during its boss battle. Later, when using this form to battle Brevon's flying robots, she can alternate between this and bursts of fireballs.
* CyberCyclops: Much like Syntax, Pangu has only one single optic for eye.
* ElectronicSpeechImpediment: During her reveal, she speaks in a glitchy manner until Lilac forcibly reboots her.
-->'''Pangu:''' ''APOLOGIES. THAT INFORMATION IS PASSWORD PROTECTED PASSWORD PROTECTED PASSWORD [=PROTECTEDPAaAa*-*-=] . . * ''
* GoodCounterpart: She is the benevolent counterpart of Syntax, sharing the same body model with her, but possessing none of her malice and not being aligned with Brevon.
* HardLight: Despite the fact that her Holodragon form is, well, a hologram, it's still tangible enough to be able to have the orbs on its back destroyed and its claws can clearly cause physical damage.
* HolographicDisguise: She can turn herself into the Holodragon, a humongous non-anthropomorphic Eastern dragon, and she uses this form to repel intruders and during the shmup level, where Lilac hitches a ride on her back. Also, she [[GodGuise poses as a mythical dragon]] to convince Mayor Zao to accept the alliance with Shang Tu. For the sake of the Avian Museum and its visitors, this mode was uninstalled before the sequel.
* LivingMacguffin: Becomes this in the sequel, as [[spoiler:Merga needs her to pilot Bakunawa]].
* OurDragonsAreDifferent: Her Holodragon form resembles a giant non-anthropomorphic Eastern dragon, and in this form she can fire [[WaveMotionGun a massive laser]] from her dragon form's mouth, attack with claws, and summon tons of blue {{fireballs}}.
* PercussiveMaintenance: After she glitches out while stating that her information is password-protected, Lilac reboots her systems with a good kick. Not only does it successfully reload her, but it also registers as a correct password.
* SegmentedSerpent: Her Holodragon form consists of a series of round segments tipped with her head.
* SignificantDoubleCasting: Shares a voice actress with Syntax and [[spoiler: Cordelia]]. Supplementary material by the developers imply this is intentional, but as of this edit the games haven't revealed why.
* UnexpectedShmupLevel: In between Pangu Lagoon and Battle Glacier, Lilac rides Pangu's Holodragon form, during which the game shifts into a flying shooter that involves destroying hordes of flying enemies.
* VirtualTrainingSimulation: In the sequel, Pangu can create a holographic double of the playable character if said character wishes to spar with themselves. This serves as an in-universe justification to allow the characters to fight themselves.
* WimpFight: In the CreativeClosingCredits of the first game, she engages in a slap fight with Syntax, identifying her as "malicious software".

[[folder:Maria Notte]]
[[quoteright:240:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marianotte.png]]
->''"I'm Maria Notte with Tri Kingdom News, Avalice's number-one news network!"''
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MarissaLenti
The adventurous news anchor for Tri Kingdom News. She flies all around the planet, in search of the latest stories to boost her network ratings.
----
* BatPeople: She's an anthropomorphic Fruit Bat.
* CuteLittleFangs: Maria ([[BatPeople naturally]]) has some very noticeable ones when you see her talking.
* CuteMonsterGirl: Her wings and claws make her noticeably less anthropomorphic than a good portion of the cast (at least, those based on real-life animals), but Maria's still very fluffy and cute.
* {{Flight}}: As a bat, Maria can fly, but it's treated more like a civilian asset (using it simply for ambulation instead of fighting like Lilac and Milla do) than an outright superpower.
* FurryReminder: Much like real bats -- and unlike, say, [[Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog Rouge]] or [[VideoGame/DustAnElysianTail Fidget]] -- Maria's arms and "hands" are also her wings, complete with large membranes between each digit and claws on the ends of them. Also much like real bats (when they roost in dark places), she can hang upside-down; albeit via special hooks on her boots that [[MundaneUtility also let her carry her suitcase while flying]].
* IntrepidReporter: She reports on the various disasters occurring throughout the plot and gives interviews the people involved in-person. It helps the protagonists out, too; with them occasionally watching her show in order to get a lead on their next destination.
* LittleBlackDress: It's never particularly focused on, but Maria wears one that shows off her curvy figure.
* MeaningfulName: Maria's surname is [[BilingualBonus Italian for "Night"]]. It's all-too fitting for not only a creature that's particularly active in the dark, but also for a dedicated reporter who's active all hours.
* ModestyShorts: She wears a LittleBlackDress, but as you'd imagine for somebody who flies around a lot as part of her job, also has some big puffy white leggings on underneath.
* SignatureHeadgear: Maria is never seen without her sunglasses and headphones, both of which are specially shaped for her big bat ears.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Being a Fruit Bat, Maria is very fond of eating berries. Her concept art suggests that her favorite ones in particular are purple grapes.

->''"Before you decided to throw your life away and interfere with our mission, you should have asked yourself one very important question... what makes you so special?"''
->'''Voiced by:''' Xander Barriga

A powerful and ruthless alien warlord who's crash-landed on Avalice after a fierce space battle, eager to recharge his army and continue to swiftly conquer the galaxy. To do this, he'll need the Kingdom Stone -- and he's more than willing to stir up local tensions in order to get his hands on it.
----
* AllThereInTheManual: He is listed as "Arktivus Brevon" on the official website. It's unknown if Arktivus is his [[LastNameBasis first name]] or an [[{{Fictionary}} alien title]].
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: There is no question who is the most dangerous entity in his army. [[NoSell He can shrug off sustained weapons fire]], is brutally efficient with a [[PsychoKnifeNut combat dagger]], and he is dangerously pragmatic.
* BigBad: Fitting the role as the first game's primary villain.
* BigOlUnibrow: It's ''[[ExaggeratedTrope bigger than his head]]''.
%%* BrainwashedAndCrazy: He seems to be a big fan of this tactic.%%How so?
* TheCameo: In the sequel's GoldenEnding, [[spoiler:holograms of him are used as an attack by [[TrueFinalBoss Syntax]] in her final phase]].
* CurbStompBattle:
** Most fights he's involved in tend to end up like this. In his favor, of course. [[spoiler:The first time he and Lilac meet face to face, he defeats her effortlessly.]]
** At the end of Milla's Adventure Mode. [[spoiler:He himself is subject to this by Lilac who effortlessly beats him up severely through her Dragon Boost of varying levels.]]
* CombatPragmatist: He's more than a match for our heroines in hand-to-hand combat, but [[spoiler:he'll try to run you over in his starfighter first. Then he'll hop in a MiniMecha and fight you that way. It's only after all of those options are exhausted that he'll face you head-on. Keep in mind, you're on foot for all of this]].
* DeadpanSnarker: With the emphasis on the deadpan.
* TheDreaded: One can see just how badly he ravaged Avalice throughout the first game. In the second, three years later, [[spoiler:the mere possibility that Serpentine and Syntax might be heralds of his return is enough to inspire ''genuine fear'' in Lilac and Milla, and for General Gong and the Magister to deploy their forces to Shuigang immediately despite Neera's attempts to de-escalate. Not even ''Merga'' inspires such fear and alarm even when she's ''planning to destroy the moon'', though instead of threat level it's a testament to Brevon's ruthlessness and cruelty]].
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: The intro shows him breaking into the supposedly impenetrable Shuigang by breaking through their floors, almost casually murder a bunch of people fighting him, and then painfully brainwash the son of the King right after killing said King.
* EvilChancellor: To Prince Dail. Unbeknownst to him, he had brainwashed him into being his puppet.
* EvilSoundsDeep: He rocks a deep voice, mixed with an alien-sounding reverb effect.
* {{Expy}}:
** Firstly, there's [[VideoGame/MegaManX Sigma]]. Let's see, three-phase final battles? Check. Gets a well-deserved "ThisIsUnforgivable" speech from the heroines? Check. Dashing moves chained into [[LightningBruiser devastating attacks]]? Checks all round!
** He also shares a lot with Sarris from ''Film/GalaxyQuest''. Same kind of VileVillainSaccharineShow galactic conqueror with a similar booming voice, ruthless tactics, tortures for fun, and is seen [[YouHaveFailedMe punishing his subordinates for failure]]. [=SpacemanStrife=] outright admits that Sarris was an inspiration for Lord Brevon.
** His eyebrows are reminiscent of either [[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog Dr. Eggman/Robotnik's]] mustache or [[VideoGame/MegaManClassic Dr. Wily's]] hair; additionally, his voice would make Eggman's [[WesternAnimation/SonicTheHedgehogSatAM Saturday morning cartoon]] appearance proud.
** He seems to have taken inspiration from Marubasu from [[Manga/KishinDoujiZenki Kishin Douji Zenki: Vajura Fight]] as well. Both are the {{Big Bad}}s and final bosses of their own respective games, with a number of phases (three for Brevon and two for Marubasu, to be specific), and are fast and dangerous opponents and exceptionally good with blade weapons, making them tough opponents that could cost players lots of lives even if they're really good at playing their respective games. They also have green minions that aren't taken seriously until they get painfully transformed at the end.
** His armor, cape, ambition of being a GalacticConqueror, and use of little black creatures as the [[LivingBattery "cores"]] of his {{Mook}}s all just ''scream'' that he's inspired by [[VideoGame/{{Ristar}} Kaiser Greedy]]. Given that the game takes [[{{Retraux}} obvious inspiration]] from [[UsefulNotes/SegaGenesis Genesis]] and [[UsefulNotes/SegaSaturn Saturn]] games, this is probably intentional.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He sure loves his not-so-genuine politeness, doesn't he?
-->'''Brevon:''' (''during the opening scene'') There's no reason to be hostile, your majesty. In fact, you should be proud. [[PreMortemOneLiner Your son is only moments away from inheriting the throne.]]\
'''Brevon:''' (''in Thermal Base'') My actions have hurt people? I had no idea. I'm dreadfully sorry.\
'''Brevon:''' (''during the heroines' infiltration of his ship'') Ohhh, no! My ship is being infiltrated! What ever shall I do? (''drops the mock-fear'') How about THIS.
* GalacticConqueror: That's his ambition, anyway -- and one he's handily fulfilling. If Avalice falls and he gets his mitts on the Kingdom Stone, the galaxy is hosed.
* GreaterScopeVillain: In the sequel, despite [[spoiler:having been chased off the planet]], his mark on Avalice is still deeply felt and by all rights is essentially responsible for the sequel's events due to [[spoiler:being responsible for the destruction of the Kingdom Stone, resulting in Merga's release from captivity]]. It only becomes even more apparent in [[spoiler:the Golden Ending due to Syntax taking over Bakunawa for the purpose of turning it into a weapon for Brevon, and she ''is'' still loyal to him, as indicated by using holographic projections of him during the final battle against the Bakunawa Fusion.]]
* HateSink: Tries to justify his actions while trying to escape the planet, but the more atrocities he commits, the more inexcusable it becomes. [[spoiler:The fact that he tortured Lilac and mutated Milla is especially heinous.]]
* HeroKiller:
** Torque describes him as having killed or corrupted countless heroes who have tried to stand against him.
** A cutscene shows him finishing off a band of [[HeroOfAnotherStory local do-gooders]]. The last remaining hero, a literal SpearCarrier, [[DefiantToTheEnd swears that Brevon will get his some day]]... [[ShutUpKirk and then Brevon, tired of his prattle, slaughters him]].
* {{Hypocrite}}: Most of his lectures to the heroes involved how barbaric or foolish they are, yet he refuses to acknowledge or accept his own brutal nature and his status as a [[TheManBehindTheMan Man Behind The Man]] who creates such messes in the first place. He pretty much believes himself to be beyond any rules of nature. Torque even says so himself.
--> '''Torque:''' [[StoppingTheBlameGame You think you're a blameless force of nature, don't you?! That somehow the rules don't apply to you?!]]
* InsectoidAliens: He's either insectoid or reptilian. His big antennae-like unibrow and his big red eyes are reminiscent of a beetle. His personal cruiser/HumongousMecha also looks like one... but can also be considered a Frog.
* KarmaHoudini: Somewhat downplayed. He loses the Kingdom Stone and his warship and army are destroyed, but he manages to escape despite getting a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown after his FinalBoss fight, with [[FightUnscene Torque in hot pursuit and intent on finishing what he started]]. Avalice will probably never have to deal with him again either way[[spoiler: unless the Bakunawa wreckage turns out to be too good to pass up]].
* KnightOfCerebus: Compared to other characters in the story. Whenever he appears -- [[TheDreaded or is even mentioned]] -- in a cutscene, the game ''always'' gets much darker and more serious.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: He won't be returning for ''VideoGame/FreedomPlanet2'' despite surviving the events of the first game, for this reason. After losing to the heroes, Brevon's decided that Avalice just isn't worth the headache. However, a few unused voice lines from Syntax in the sequel’s files seem to suggest that this may not stick…
* LackOfEmpathy: [[spoiler:He doesn't feel any remorse at all while torturing Lilac, and admits that he wasn't even trying to get any information out of Torque; [[KickTheDog he just wanted to see how easily he broke under pressure.]]]]
* LargeAndInCharge: Lord Brevon is by far the tallest and heaviest character.
* {{Leitmotif}}: Two. "It's Brevon Time", a slow-paced rock tune that plays whenever he shows up, and "Brev in yo Hizzle" for when he's being particularly evil. The latter is [[BossRemix remixed]] for his boss fight.
* LightningBruiser: [[spoiler:He's basically this in the final phase of his boss battle. His attacks, especially his knife, do a ridiculous amount of damage, and he's quick on his feet and relentless with his attacks. Luckily, as of the final version, he [[RushBoss doesn't have great HP]], downgrading him to a GlassCannon.]]
* LittleGreenMen: Looks the part, except the aforementioned size. Considering he might share his species with Torque, it may very well be that he's the exception to the rule. Considering he has some kind of SuperSerum in his possession [[spoiler:(as shown by Milla and Serpentine)]], he might've experimented on himself as well.
* MoralMyopia: [[spoiler:He constantly tries to portray himself as a victimized WellIntentionedExtremist and that the heroes' misfortunes are their own fault for getting in his way. Needless to say, this really rings hollow, especially since he tries this justification ''after turning Milla into a brainwashed monster purely out of spite''.]]
* NoSell:
** What he does to the Shuigang soldiers' gunfire. ''With his face!''
** He can ''catch Lilac mid-Dragon Boost'' if he's using his grab attack during the boss fight against him.
* NotSoWellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler:He's after the Kingdom Stone to save his world and will do whatever it takes to get it, but Torque throws this right back in his face by pointing out that the suffering he's caused to other worlds is the reason his planet is in danger in the first place. Brevon doesn't deny this.]]
* OffWithHisHead: His preferred method of dealing with people.
* OneWingedAngel: {{Inverted|Trope}}. He first has to be fought in a HumongousMecha, and once it's destroyed, he fights the heroes on his own. [[ThatOneBoss It's no cakewalk either.]]
* PragmaticVillainy: Brevon doesn't have any interest in taking over Avalice: his only concern is getting the Kingdom Stone to repower his ship so he can continue his conquest, and his actions (at least at first) revolve around keeping his presence on Avalice to a minimum so he can get the Kingdom Stone and take off without incident.
* PsychoKnifeNut: His primary weapon of choice is a curved dagger, which seems to be covered in green blood. ''Constantly''. He's also a malicious, brutish warlord who won't think twice before slashing someone's head off. In his boss battle, his knife attack takes out '''3 full health points''', which is the largest amount of non-softlock damage in the game.
* PutOnABus: He's left Avalice come ''VideoGame/FreedomPlanet2'', due to that being his goal to begin with, and (as per WordOfGod{{invoked}}) getting back to his empire. [[spoiler:The impact he left on Avalice is still frequently referenced, and his likeness even appears in the game for one of Syntax's attacks in her TrueFinalBoss battle, with her summoning holograms of Brevon that perform the warlord's signature knife slash attack.]]
* RedEyesTakeWarning: They're red, he's evil, and he's dangerous.
* RushBoss: His final form, after the player takes down his starfighter and mech. It doesn't take all that much damage to finish the job, but he's fast, able to tear off a huge chunk of the player's health in a single strike, and absolutely unrelenting.
* SarcasmMode: [[ShutUpKirk His response]] to Torque's TheReasonYouSuckSpeech:
--> '''Brevon:''' [[WellIntentionedExtremist It's my world on the line. You know exactly how far I'll go to ensure its safety.]]\
'''Torque:''' [[{{Hypocrite}} Your world is in danger]] because [[NotSoWellIntentionedExtremist of the suffering]] ''[[NotSoWellIntentionedExtremist you've]]'' [[NotSoWellIntentionedExtremist caused to the other worlds!]]\
'''Brevon:''' ''[[CaptainObvious My]]'' [[CaptainObvious actions have hurt people]]? [[SarcasmMode I had no idea! I'm]] ''[[SarcasmMode dreadfully]]'' [[SarcasmMode sorry.]]\
'''Milla:''' [[SarcasmBlind Really?]]\
'''Carol:''' He's lying!
* SmugSnake: Literally everything he says is positively ''dripping'' with smug superiority, only dropping at the very end of the game when he's confronted by the heroes for the final showdown.
* VileVillainSaccharineShow: ''Freedom Planet'' is a light-hearted and funny game for the most part. Lord Brevon is a cold-hearted and amoral tyrant who has conquered or destroyed countless worlds. Any time he appears on the scene, the game's tone takes a ''serious'' turn for the worse. Among his acts of villainy are [[spoiler:beheading the king of Shuigang in front of his own son and then brainwashing said son into servitude, the ''extremely'' painful torture of Lilac (by the time he's done with her, much of her body is covered in ''burn scars''), and turning the cute and innocent Milla into a horrific monster and setting her loose on the other heroines]].
* VillainOpeningScene: He gets on in the beginning of the game where he invades the Shuigang Palace, effortlessly slaughters every soldier standing in his way, beheads the king, and brainwashes his son. There's also the first cutscene when you open up the story mode, as it shows his ship crashing into the frozen wastes and him yelling in rage over this fact.
* VillainsActHeroesReact: Not that relations between the three major kingdoms of Avalice were necessarily ''good'' before he entered the scene, but he's [[spoiler:deliberately turning them against one another to drive up confusion, allowing him to steal the Kingdom Stone unnoticed]]. If he weren't present, the game's plot wouldn't be happening.
* VillainousBreakdown: As the heroines continue to unravel his plans, he becomes increasingly obsessed with killing them above all else. [[spoiler:By the final battle, he's completely snapped, madly moving around the arena and attacking while snarling crazed threats. And in Milla's story, he tries to strangle her in a murderous fit of rage, which Lilac prevents by severely beating him up.]]
-->[[spoiler:'''Brevon:''' (to Milla) Rrrgh! You've pestered me long enough! Say goodbye!]]
* VillainousLegacy: Even long after he's left Avalice, his influence and impact on the world and its denizens can still be felt, with even the world leaders fearing the ''possibility'' of his return one day. [[spoiler:This extends to his CoDragons, Serpentine and Syntax; they spent the interim rebuilding his army and raiding Shuigang for supplies in preparation to return to their master's side, and both go on to hijack Bakunawa from the BigBad and threaten all of Avalice - Syntax more successfully.]]
* WouldHurtAChild: [[spoiler:Not only does he mutilate Lilac when he's captured her (including tearing out her hair whips and electrocuting her), he also grazes Milla with his knife when he uses her as a hostage to keep Lilac/Carol from shutting down his ship, which then forcibly mutates Milla into a monstrous creature to fight. In Milla's story mode, he knocks out Carol with a surprise attack and leaves her that way thinking her dead, and he also makes his intentions to kill Milla outright quite clear.]]

A snake-like creature with a pair of robotic arms to make up for his total lack of limbs. Lord Brevon's right-hand man.
----
* AnimalMecha: He fights the heroes on [[PantheraAwesome Robopanther]] in the end of the Fortune Night.
* ArtificialLimbs: He would be just another snake without his mechanical arms.
* BigBadWannabe: In ''Freedom Planet 2'', he tries to present himself as the biggest threat to Avalice that will continue Brevon's legacy, but in the end, he's just a small fry when compared to Merga. [[spoiler:And while he does manage to [[EvilerThanThou successfully upstage]] one of Merga's minions, when he tries to upstage Merga herself by taking over Bakunawa, she regains the control of the ship and tells him to leave, refusing to even acknowledge him as a threat, only acknowledging the boldness of his attempt.]]
* BigNo: After being defeated at the end of Fortune Night.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: The website states that his robotic arms have messed with his brain, making him exceedingly loyal to Brevon, and more than a ''little'' psychotic in doing his leader's will.
* BullyingADragon: [[spoiler:Given how he treats Milla in the sequel, dangling her origins over her like a Sword of Damocles, you'd think he would try to understand ''why'' Brevon would want to make someone like her in the first place. Needless to say, once she works up the nerve, she gives him a thorough shellacking for all the trauma.]]
* ButtMonkey: Nobody really takes him seriously as a threat, his RecurringBoss status means that he takes a lot of suffering throughout the game, and [[spoiler:during the end credits, finds that he lost his robotic arms after being defeated when he got mutated as a line of defense against the heroes]]. He fares a tad better in the second game regarding his schemes, but [[spoiler: he's sent out as ATwinkleInTheSky no more than four times.]]
* CardCarryingVillain: Serpentine is a bad guy and ''proud'' of it. His dialogue has shamelessly stating stuff like his intent to conquer the world, and quite frequently Serpentine's presence is heralded by his trademark EvilLaugh.
* ChewingTheScenery[=/=]NoIndoorVoice: There's hardly a moment in the games where he isn't shouting.
* CombatPragmatist: He has no qualms with fighting the heroes in any kind of huge vehicle [[spoiler:or hijacking an enemy's robot army with Syntax's hacking]].
* {{Dehumanization}}: [[spoiler:When he thinks he has Milla under his control after revealing to her the AwfulTruth about where she really came from, Serpentine constantly talks down to her in this fashion. Depending on the situation, he gleefully does so with the tone of either a pet to be trained or a soulless weapon to be used, and [[DiggingYourselfDeeper makes the not-so bright decision]] to continue doing so when [[FakeDefector Milla reveals that she tricked him]] into letting her board the Bakunawa and is [[TheDogBitesBack in the process of breaking down his Resonance Link]]]].
-->'''Serpentine:''' [[spoiler:[[VillainousBreakdown What?! NO! Stop it!]] Bad dog! ''BAD DOG!'' Sit down and take your mutation like a good puppy!]]
* TheDragon: He is Lord Brevon's second-in-command and does a lot of his forces' footwork (well, metaphorically) in the early game.
* DragonTheirFeet: In the sequel, Serpentine ends up being stranded on Avalice, after Brevon's dreadnought was destroyed and Brevon himself has fled. He takes over as the leader of Brevon's remaining forces on the planet, intending to continue his master's work and, eventually, also leave the planet and reunite with him.
* EnemyMine: In the sequel, [[spoiler:he and the girls are forced to team up in the finale, as they need him to break through Bakunawa's defenses. True to form, [[TheStarscream he immediately turns on them once he fulfills his end of the bargain and gets his mech back]].]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards: His only response to Lilac's insinuation that he might [[ImAHumanitarian eat]] Torque is a FlatWhat coupled with a break in the background music.
* EvilIsHammy: The trigger-happy snake he is, he never has a calm moment, especially during combat.
* EvilSoundsRaspy: His voice is raspy and high-pitched, fitting with his psychotic nature.
* EvilerThanThou: In the sequel, he finds himself facing off against Merga's forces led by Aaa. However, after Aaa repairs Syntax and the drone immediately displays her loyalty to fellow Brevon's general, Serpentine proves himself to be a much more threatening force by having Syntax activate Code Black, hijacking all of Aaa's troops to his side, thus forcing Aaa to [[EnemyMine team up with Lilac and her friends to ensure their mutual survival]]. However, all of his attempts to prove himself to be a superior threat to Merga herself backfire horribly.
* FacialHorror: In the final fight [[spoiler:with his mutated form, when he's on low health, his face starts melting to the point where his eyes end up dangling on stalks.]] [[spoiler:Thankfully, it doesn't stick, with Serpentine back to normal (sans robot arms) in the credits.]]
* FakingTheDead: After the events of ''Freedom Planet'', he failed to escape Avalice and now remains in hiding, waiting for a chance to escape and return to Lord Brevon. It takes Avalice ''3 years'' to find out he's still alive and slithering.
* FiringInTheAirALot: His signature Plasma Storm attack has him fire a lot of shots into the air to have the projectiles rain down on his opponents.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Initially, he was just a snake that wanted to have arms. Then, once his wish was granted by Brevon, he ended up becoming a TriggerHappy top general of his forces, and one of his most dangerous minions.
* GoldfishPoopGang: He's a constant thorn on Team Lilac's side, and while he ''is'' pretty dangerous, he still serves mostly as a comic relief, the team doesn't really take him seriously as a threat, and most of the time he gets the floor moped with him after every encounter. [[spoiler:He becomes significantly more dangerous in the sequel, but only Milla takes him seriously before he unleashes Code Black.]]
* HumongousMecha: [[spoiler: Halfway through ''Freedom Planet 2'', he gains the Titan Armor, a giant robot that looks like a cobra with arms. You fight it twice, the first time in Nalao Lake. Thankfully, you have the BFF-2000, another giant mecha, to fight him with. In Inversion Dynamo, you fight him again in the Titan Armor, though this time, you don't have the crutch of a giant mech to fight him with, putting the odds to his favor]].
* HotBlooded: Describing him as such is an understatement.
* {{Jerkass}}: He's very rude, unpleasant and foul-mouthed, and is known to frequently fire insults at his opponents.
* KaizoTrap: [[spoiler:After his Wolf Armor is bested in the second game, he'll try to hack you to ribbons as the armor self-destructs.]]
* KarmicButtMonkey: Serpentine tries throughout the sequel to establish himself as more important to the overarching plot than he otherwise would be, but it's attempts to persuade [[spoiler:[[TheCutie Milla]] to join him and betray the others]] that earn him this. [[spoiler:During the game's climax, he's taken over Baknuawa and forces the matter on Milla one last time; when she rebuffs him again, he breaks out a MindControlDevice to force her to do the deed anyway. Your player character of choice then has to fight against his giant mech to free her (unless you were playing as Milla herself, in which case he ensnares the three other heroines as well, and Milla breaks ''herself'' free through sheer determination, then fights Serpentine to free ''them''). Everything falls apart on him from there; his mech is destroyed, Merga regains control of Bakunawa, and while he hurriedly flees like a coward, Milla sends him ''flying'' off the ship with multiple cube blasts to the face. Milla even comments on how good that karmic beatdown felt, after all he'd done to her.]]
* LoneWolfBoss: In ''Freedom Planet 2'', he has no connection to Merga's plans and is just working to return to his master's side.
* {{Manchild}}: Played for laughs when he's dealing with Aaa, with the two bickering back and forth like two kids playing with action figures trying to one up each other. Aaa is an actual child, but Serpentine's tone and taunts aren't any more mature than the tarsier's.
* MoreDakka: He carries a multitude of weapons in {{Hammerspace}} at any given time. Some of his attacks fall into BulletHell territory.
* MixedMetaphor: In the second game he has an amusing tendency to mix up poker and chess, particularly his quote "In this game of chess, I hold ALL the cards!" and soon after, "FOUR OF A KIND! CHECKMATE!!" Milla attempts to correct him the first time, but it doesn't work.
* NeverFoundTheBody: After the final battle with him, he's apparently gone for good, [[spoiler:with nothing left except his chest-plate. The credits reveal he had returned to his limbless snake form and was [[NotQuiteDead just hiding inside the armor]]. Sure enough, he's still around three years later]].
* NoIndoorVoice: His usual tone of voice is, at the very least, screechy. In ''Freedom Planet 2'', the times in which he is ''not'' shouting can be counted on one hand.
* OneWingedAngel: [[spoiler:Mutates into a giant, vaguely draconic version of himself in Final Dreadnought.]]
* RecurringBoss: You fight him three times across the first game; four if you're playing Lilac. In the sequel, you'll fight him four times as well.
* TheRemnant: In ''Freedom Planet 2'', he, along with Syntax, are the sole remaining members of Brevon's army on Avalice.
* SequentialBoss: [[spoiler:His first phase in the sequel is fought on 'foot', but after a fakeout with the end of that, he'll bring his own mecha for the second phase.]]
* SerialEscalation:
** The first fight is simply a DuelBoss with Lilac. The second fight has him hop into his Robopanther. The third fight has him use his personal gunship. The final fight has him [[spoiler:mutate into a giant version of himself]].
** ''Freedom Planet 2'' does this again. Starting off with his base form, he quickly dons a wolf-themed armor made out of scrap to fight you again immediately after. [[spoiler:The second time you meet him, he's equipped with a humongous snake mecha - but thankfully, [[BehemothBattle you've got your own mecha to fight him with]]. The final time, near the end of the game, he equips the same mecha -- but now you're on foot.]]
* SnakePerson: No legs, only tail. He wouldn't even have ''arms'' if it weren't for the robotic ones Brevon gave him.
* SnakesAreSinister: A villainous snake that is fanatically loyal to Lord Brevon and is very dangerous and TriggerHappy.
* SmugSnake: Pun intended. Make no mistake, he's powerful enough on his own to make him a formidable enemy, but his over-inflated ego and fanatical loyalty to Brevon keep him from being truly impressive.
* ThisCannotBe: During the CreativeClosingCredits, he, after crawling out of his armor, realizes that he no longer has arms, and despairs over said loss, screaming "Impossible!" twice.
* TookALevelInBadass: [[spoiler: Freedom Planet 2 shows that even without Brevon leading him, Serpentine's still a formidable match for the heroes. Able to create a makeshift mech out of scrap to fight the heroes after he's beaten on foot, he also has Syntax to assist him with Code Black, essentially increasing the size of his army dramatically. And he even takes over Bakunawa and it's troops during Inversion Dynamo. Granted, Merga gains control back after he's defeated, but it's still his most impressive feat.]]
* TransformationHorror: [[spoiler:Lord Brevon mutates him into a horrific monstrosity in Final Dreadnought.]]
* TriggerHappy: He really likes shooting things.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Lord Brevon. This is something of a side-effect of his robot arms; they're directly affecting his brain, so this is out of more than mere ''gratitude''. However, the sequel shows it may be a little more than that: [[spoiler:After his climatic battle in ''Freedom Planet'', he was stuck on Avalice and was forced to rebuild his arms while waiting for a chance to come back to Lord Brevon.]]
* VillainsNeverLie: He does this a lot in the sequel with [[spoiler:Milla. He reveals that he may be able to reunite her with her parents, as she, they, and he all hail from the same planet -- ''Lord Brevon's'' -- and that she was a product of his War Dog program that was mistakenly left alone on Avalice somehow, explaining her unusual appearance and the purpose behind her green energy powers. Specifically ''how'' true he's being is left vague, but it's heavily implied that it's no lie; regardless, it has the intended effect, Milla struggling with the revelation and its implications for the rest of the story]].
* WeCanRuleTogether: [[spoiler:Extends offers both to Milla and Aaa to join him in serving Brevon, though he's rebuffed in both cases. While Milla does accept later on, it is not in good faith.]]

Lord Brevon's personal AI assistant.
----
* AIIsACrapshoot:
** [[spoiler:Subverted. Despite sharing some similar traits with [=GLaDOS=], Syntax is completely loyal to Brevon. (Which isn't good for Avalice, mind you, but at least she's not AxCrazy.)]]
** [[spoiler:A [[ZigZaggingTrope zig-zagged variation]] of this occurs in the sequel, however. As Syntax reveals that she survived and plans to harvest the moon's power herself, which was Merga's original plan. While she is technically fulfilling Serpentine's plans just as intended, she flies off the handle anyway due to her fusion with Bakunawa [[SanitySlippage beginning to eat away at her sanity]].]]
* AnimalMecha: Several forms she takes are modelled after various kinds of animals. In her first mid-boss battle in Thermal Base, she takes the form of a [[MechanicalInsects mechanical]] GiantSpider, and in the end, she takes the form of a GiantSquid, and in the UnexpectedShmupLevel, she takes the form of a GiantEnemyCrab. In the sequel, this is downplayed, but she still equips another giant mechanical spider in the Shade Armory.
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:After being presumably scrapped on the Final Dreadnought, she is found in the Robot Graveyard three years later, aiding Serpentine in his operations.]]
* BishonenLine: [[spoiler:After spending two entire games as a single eyed, octopus-like robot - even her animal forms tending towards creatures that weren't remotely humanoid - as Bakunawa Fusion she gains a human-like figure, feminine, waspish hips, and CombatStilettos. The [[ArmlessBiped lack of arms]]; bladed, [[PowerGivesYouWings seraphim-like wings]] and large horn keep her design alien enough, but it's a marked departure both from Syntax and the general design of most robots in the game.]]
* ComputerVirus: The sequel reveals that she can take control of machines through a routine called Code Black. [[spoiler:This includes Bakunawa and all of the robots inside of it.]]
* CyberCyclops: She has one big, glowing green eye.
* TheDragon: [[spoiler:In the sequel, Syntax serves as Serpentine's second-in-command in charge of the remnant of Brevon's forces.]]
* DragonTheirFeet: [[spoiler:Though Serpentine was defeated and knocked off Bakunawa by the heroines, Syntax still remains on the ship and ultimately [[HijackedByGanon takes over as the main threat]], taking control of the entire Bakunawa after Merga's defeat in the GoldenEnding route.]]
* DramaticWind: Parodied with her [[spoiler:Bakunawa Fusion form]] as it is displayed in the gallery. Fans are set up in in the exhibit to make its ribbons billow and animate the way they do in the boss fight.
* {{Expy}}: She's a female computer with a single eye who speaks in a semi-robotic monotone, spies on you through security cameras, and puts up a façade of politeness while psychotically trying to kill you. Lord Brevon must be a fan of [[VideoGame/{{Portal}} GLaDOS]].
* FauxAffablyEvil: Even when trying to murder Lilac and her friends, she still communicates in the same courtesious tone.
* TheFourthWallWillNotProtectYou: [[spoiler:In the Weapon's Core, after she took over complete control over Bakunawa, she apparently managed to take over even the pause screen text, as when you pause the game, the word "pause" will be substituted with "You can't hide here".]]
* FusionDance: [[spoiler: The true ending of ''Freedom Planet 2'' sees her merging with Bakunawa after Merga is defeated so she can resume the mining operation. Her final form is explicity named [[AllThereInTheScript "Bakunawa Fusion"]] in the Battlesphere.]]
* GetOut: [[spoiler:PlayedForHorror; in the Weapon's Core of Bakunawa, once she [[SinisterSurveillance spots the heroines]], she'll begin to progressively shout "GET OUT" at increasingly louder volumes if they won't leave her area of sight. Should they fail to comply for too long, she'll instantly kill them via impaling.]]
* HijackedByGanon: [[spoiler:Despite having been seemingly blasted off the Bakunawa along with Serpentine, it is then revealed that she did not truly leave the ship if the player obtained all time capsules beforehand and ultimately uses Code Black 2.0 to take over Bakunawa and resume Merga's original plan of harvesting Avalice's moon, leaving the heroines and Merga to stop her.]]
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:Seems to finally meet her fate in the true ending of ''Freedom Planet 2'', her body falling apart before the entire ship lands into the ocean.]]
* LivingMacguffin: One that all sides of the conflict in ''Freedom Planet 2'' want: Serpentine, to strengthen his army even further with her Code Black ability, Merga (more specifically, Aaa), to bolster the BFF-2000 and make it operatable with one pilot, and Team Lilac for the sole purpose of not letting either side use Syntax and make the war unwinnable.
* MadnessMantra: [[spoiler:Letting her watch you for too long in Weapon's Core has her scream "GET OUT" at increasingly louder volumes. It devolves into a rant before she impales your character at its worst. The same ranting is used during a similar attack in boss fight proper.]]
* MechanicalAbomination: [[spoiler:While she was originally just an assistant robot to Brevon, her fusion with Bakunawa during the true ending of the second game changes things. Right before the TrueFinalBoss battle, Syntax mentions parasites crawling in her ''veins'' influencing her to kill indicating that whatever she's become now is no longer just a mere machine.]]
* OneWingedAngel:
** In the original game, twice! Both have her attaching herself to some sort of combat robot.
** [[spoiler:The sequel dramatically ups the ante, culminating in her [[FusionDance fusing]] with a ''space warship'' and becoming the true final boss.]]
* PlayingWithFire: She manipulates molten magma in her battles at the Thermal Base.
* RecurringBoss:
** She's fought four times throughout the game: once as a mini-boss, twice as a boss at the end of a stage, and once at the end of the mini-game phase of Battle Glacier.
** She returns as one in ''Freedom Planet 2'': starting off in the Monster Cube, then accosting you the stage after with her Spider mech. [[spoiler: And she's the final boss of the GoldenEnding]].
* SanitySlippage: [[spoiler:What very little dialogue she has after declaring the plan to harvest the moon will continue suggests that melding with Bakunawa might've been a bit too much for the robot to handle.]]
--> [[spoiler:Parasites...crawling in my ''veins''...''kill you''... ''kill you''...'''''KILL YOU'''''.]]
* SchmuckBait: She attempts this on the player.
-->'''Syntax:''' To unlock this door, [[TooDumbToLive step on the blinking floor panel to your right]].
** If you [[PressXToDie actually step on it]], it will explode shortly afterward.
-->'''Syntax:''' Just kidding.
* SelfRecoverySurprise: [[spoiler:The body she uses after fusing with Bakunawa's core can heal itself faster than the four heroines can damage it. Only Merga's assistance proves enough to overcome it.]]
* ShoutOut: Her constant transformations into variously shaped mecha is clear one to Seven Force of ''VideoGame/GunstarHeroes'' fame. While she only tends to use 3 to 4 forms in any given fight, she easily has more than seven collectively.
* SignificantDoubleCasting: Shares a voice actress with Pangu and [[spoiler: Cordelia]]. Supplementary material by the developers insist this is intetional, but as of this edit, the games haven't revealed why.
* SinisterSurveillance: In the Thermal Base. [[spoiler:The Weapon's Core, the secret level of the sequel, has a ''far'' more sinister version where if you let her sights linger on you for too long, she kills you instantly.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: [[spoiler: Syntax was already a formidable combatant in the first game, being fought multiple times and only finally being put down in the first stage of the Final Dreadnought. However, the sequel expands her role more and makes her a threat to anyone not on Brevon's side. For one, while she still has her robot beast forms, they're lessened in comparison to her newly-revealed power called Code Black, which can infect any non-organic creature in the vicinity of her to her side.]] [[spoiler: And this includes the Bakunawa itself: once Merga and her control over it weakens as a result of her [[VillanousBreakdown breakdown]] in the GoldenEnding, Syntax takes over the ship and continues Merga's plans.]]
* TransformingMecha: Syntax takes on a large variety of shapes and forms throughout the game. Much of her combat during her final battle is transforming into other objects.
* {{Troll}}: Despite being one of Brevon's most dangerous robots, Syntax does have a sense of humor. In Thermal Base, she goads you into stepping into a panel to unlock a door... that turns out to be an explosive, during which she says she was just kidding. In ''Freedom Planet 2'', during your first encounter with her, she'll ask for the identity of the player character, only to then purposefully twist their words into "INTRUDER". Lilac gets it the worst; turning her name into "SQUIDHEAD" for [[MaliciousMisnaming no reason other than a laugh]].
* TrueFinalBoss: [[spoiler:Of ''Freedom Planet 2''. In the GoldenEnding, Merga is convinced to stand down only for Syntax to hijack the Bakunawa to resume the moon harvesting, forcing the heroes and Merga to put her down one last time.]]
* UnexplainedRecovery: Despite seemingly being vaporized by the laser chasing her and Lilac following the last boss fight with her aboard the Final Dreadnought, she returns somehow completely intact in the CreativeClosingCredits [[spoiler:and shows up again properly in ''Freedom Planet 2''.]]
* WimpFight: In the CreativeClosingCredits of the first game, she engages into the slap fight with Pangu, accusing her of being an "impostor".

->''"The world you saved will soon be purified. Just as you wished, Magister."''
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MorganBerry

Merga is a ruthless water dragon from the distant past who was bioengineered to be the perfect warrior. When her crystal prison is destroyed, she continues her quest to resurrect the ancient superweapon Bakunawa and unleash vengeance upon the three kingdoms. Little does she know that another water dragon still exists in the present day...
----
* BattleAura: Often accompanies her screams as she powers up between stages in her boss fight, making her look like she came out of {{Franchise/DragonBall}}.
* BigBad: Of ''Freedom Planet 2''.
* BigotWithACrush: [[spoiler:While she despises Earth Dragons, claiming that all of them are schemers and liars (understandably, given that the Earth Dragons enslaved and genocided her people), she was still in a relationship with an Earth Dragon named Cordelia. When discussing it with Cordelia while refusing the notion that Earth Dragons and Water Dragons could co-exist in peace, she excused it with a claim that Cordelia is [[YouAreACreditToYourRace "one of the good ones"]].]]
* TheBerserker: [[spoiler:She devolves into this during the final phase of her fight. She throws out energy slashes en masse, rapid-fire Dragon Boosts, and tons of kunai in one final desperate effort to kill the playable character.]]
* ButchLesbian: She's an aggressive warrior [[spoiler:who was once in a relationship with a female Earth Dragon named Cordelia]].
* ContrastingSequelAntagonist: To Brevon.
** Brevon was a GalacticConqueror who had exactly zero redeeming qualities to his name and cared about nothing but subjugating Avalice and the sadistic joy he took out of hurting anyone who opposed him. Merga, by contrast, [[spoiler:is a tragic survivor of a genocide and is obsessed with taking revenge on the race responsible, even though the original perpetrators are long dead. Also, while Brevon had three phases in his final battle, Merga has a whopping ''six''. Finally, while the music for Brevon's final battle is an appropriately intense orchestral and later metal version of his {{Leitmotif}}, Merga's music for her final battle is considerably more subdued and melancholic to highlight the inherent tragedy of her character.]]
** This even extends to her minions. Brevon’s minions either had UndyingLoyalty to him and had little characterization beyond that (Serpentine and Syntax), or were brainwashed into serving him (Dail). By contrast, Merga’s minions all have varied and sympathetic motives for joining her. To wit: [[spoiler:Aaa was desperate for a friend beyond his robots, Corazon was trying to ensure she and Carol could survive aboard Bakunawa, Askal wanted to create a new status quo where half-breeds like him would no longer be discriminated against, as well as punish the Magister for his (unknowing) role in covering up the Earth Dragons' crimes, and Kalaw desperately wanted to become a "true" hero and not just an empty celebrity by helping Merga take justice for the Water Dragon genocide.]]
** [[spoiler: Even their fates contrast. Brevon, after being beaten down, escapes the exploding Dreadnought, his plans in pieces but still alive to potentially face his crimes. Merga, meanwhile, either falls into a pit exclaiming her desire to continue her plans, or (in the true ending) attempts to stay on Bakunawa to atone for her crimes via her death. Either way, her fate is left ambiguous.]]
** [[spoiler:This extends to their methods as well. To Brevon, there are no rules, laws or customs of war that he won't break if it will give him a leg up on his enemies. Upend a kingdom, behead its ruler and brainwash the heir into his service? Instigate a three-way war between kingdoms and exploit the conflict for his own ends? Torture an enemy for no viable reason even after useful information is extracted from another? Poison and transfigure his own soldiers into weapons of war? He does all these without the slightest hesitation. Merga, on the other hand, has some clear standards: so long as you do not obstruct or sabotage her campaign, she will not harm you or your homes; and the damage to civilization that would result from the moon's destruction is mere cause and effect given the nature of the weapon she unearthed, a weapon that is clearly out of range given the lack of lunar damage no matter how many times she fires it in the Lunar Cannon stage; and even if you do get in her way, she's willing to let you off with your life if you just get out of it, only fighting the heroines aboard the Bakunawa when they have made it clear that they won't let her continue.]]
* {{Determinator}}: Just like Lilac, she's determined to see her goals through to the end [[spoiler:and when she's finally fought at the end of the game, it takes six phases before she finally concedes defeat.]]
* DistaffCounterpart: A leveled-up one to Dail. Both are high-ranking members of a water-based people whose role as antagonists comes from a misdirected desire for revenge. However, the misdirection in Dail's case came from his father's killer brainwashing him into service immediately afterward to make him go after everyone else. As for Merga, she led her own campaign and caused her own misdirection, her increasingly mind-breaking rage blinding her to the fact that [[spoiler:the beings who enslaved and eradicated her people are themselves long dead]].
* EarFins: To attribute to her nature as a pure-blooded water dragon, she sports pretty large fish fins in place of ears.
* EvilCounterpart: To Lilac. Both are water dragons, though while Lilac is on the side of justice and willing to make peace between various species, Merga only wants to get revenge on the earth dragons [[spoiler:as they were the ones enslaving her kind]] by resurrecting Bakunawa so it can harvest the power of Avalice's moon.
* EvilerThanThou: While Serpentine is the leader of the remnant of Brevon's forces, Merga proves herself on multiple occasions that she is a much greater threat out of the two and doesn't even acknowledge him as a threat, effortlessly knocking him away when he tries a surprise attack on her and even [[spoiler:hijacking Bakunawa back from him when he tries to have Syntax hijack it with [[ComputerVirus Code Black]], only briefly acknowledging the audacity of his attempt before telling him to GetOut]].
* FatalFlaw: '''Wrath'''. [[spoiler:She'd probably have the heroes' outright support had she not opted to attempt to destroy the planet in her unending hatred towards the Earth Dragons.]]
* GoingDownWithTheShip: [[spoiler:After defeating Syntax in the GoldenEnding, Merga refuses Lilac's pleas to flee the freefalling Bakunawa, having seemingly lost the will to live after realizing that her revenge was pointless. Merga only takes action when Lilac is knocked out by Syntax and on the verge of falling to her death herself.]]
* HeartbrokenBadass: [[spoiler:Besides having to watch as her race was enslaved and eventually wiped out by the Earth Dragons, being sealed away also separated her from her lover, Cordelia. Being reminded of her old love in the GoldenEnding is what makes her finally stand down.]]
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:She's finally convinced to stand down in the GoldenEnding after being shown the last recording by Cordelia, her lost love.]]
* HiddenDepths: Cordelia's entries in Time Capsules reveal more interesting details about Merga: [[spoiler:she is very proficient in horticulture and was able to memorize many flowers' names and uses, to the point that she even took offense to Cordelia's question about does she know more than one flower's name. Also, back from during the times of war, she was truly concerned with the well-being of her kin and even tried to comfort a child who ended up crying after seeing her display of brutality, and was hurt when said child only began to cry more in response to her attempts. And she also had a bit of mischievous streak to her; after seeing that Cordelia was displeased that Merga got to her favorite stall first (which turned out to be her favorite stall as well) and took all of siopao for herself, Merga's response was to put one siopao ''on her head'' with a smirk, much to Cordelia's chagrin.]]
* {{Hypocrite}}: Although she claims Earth Dragons to be "schemers and liars", she's not above scheming and lying to achieve her goal.[[note]]All of her allies, barring Aaa, were told false promises while under her employ. Merga promised Askal that she would be the voice of outcasts like himself, told Captain Kalaw of the Magister's "crimes", which led to him siding with her to be seen as a "real hero", and promised Corazon that no harm would come to her sister. All of these promises were inherent lies, since her true intentions were to have Bakunawa devour the moon and leave everyone on Avalice to die. In turn, only Aaa would have gotten what he wanted, which was to go into space.[[/note]]
* IveComeTooFar: [[spoiler:Just before the final battle, the Magister appears via hologram to state that he intends to tell the people of Avalice the truth of what the ancient Earth Dragons did to the Water Dragons. However, Merga refuses to stand down, knowing she'll be remembered as either a failed revolutionary or a genocidal tyrant if she did.]]
* TheJuggernaut: Has been explicitly genetically engineered for combat, and ''she damn well shows it''. She's been stated to be nigh-unstoppable in the past, massacring hundreds of Earth Dragons. In the present day, not even ''five'' of Avalice's best combat-capable heroes ''simultaneously'' were able to stop her. [[spoiler: It takes subsequently being weakened enough and crashing with the Bakunawa to put her down, and even then, the game makes it explicitly clear she's still possibly alive]]. It's quite arguable that she's even stronger than Brevon and ''significantly'' more durable.
* LaughingMad: [[spoiler:Following her [[IveComeTooFar refusal of the Magister's request to stand down]], she smashes his holographic projection and gives a demented cackle.]]
* LightningBruiser: Being a water dragon, she, just like Lilac, possesses the species' signature SuperSpeed powers, and on the top of that, she is very durable and possesses great physical strength among other powers.
* LoveRedeems: [[spoiler:In the GoldenEnding, Merga accidentally triggers Pangu to play a message from [[TheLostLenore Cordelia]]. Remembering the love that she and Cordelia shared, Merga decides to aid the heroes in saving the moon by destroying Syntax’s crystal]].
* MakingASplash: She possesses artifical wings that effectively grant her attacks rooted in ''[[AllYourPowersCombined all]]'' of the 5 Wuxing elements, but her official element is Water, and she starts the final battle with the Water-aligned Blue Moon armor. [[spoiler:One of her defining traits is a love of her people, horticulture, and especially Cordelia, making her something of a dark twist on what the element represents, given what she's driven to do.]]
* MeaningfulName: Bakunawa is a gigantic dragon in Philippine folklore that was said to be the cause of eclipses.
* MirrorBoss: Due to being a water dragon, Merga has a very similar moveset to Lilac. This is most apparent in their first fight partway through the game, where Merga’s most frequently used attack is the same Dragon Rush that Lilac uses. Except while the half-breed Lilac can boost only once, the pure-blooded Merga can do so multiple times in succession.
* MoralMyopia: [[spoiler:While she has a ''very'' good reason to hate the Earth Dragons, she’s so blinded by her quest for vengeance that she’s willing to destroy all life on Avalice to punish the descendants of her people’s oppressors]].
* NeverFoundTheBody: [[spoiler:Her body is never found following her defeat and the destruction of Bakunawa. Lilac suspects she's still alive and resolves to find her, hoping that she can finally talk some sense into her and convince her to let go of her insane revenge quest (in the normal ending)[=/=]help her recover from her burdens and [[YouAreNotAlone assure her that she's not alone]] (in the GoldenEnding).]]
* OneWomanArmy: It was said that she was capable of singlehandedly destroying entire armies back in her prime, to the point that she had to be sealed away on the bottom of the ocean simply because the earth dragons were unable to kill her despite their best efforts.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: [[spoiler:In the GoldenEnding, after Pangu plays the message from Cordelia to her, Merga begs for Pangu to replay the message and show Cordelia to her again, her voice sounding like she's on the verge of tears as she pleads that she wants to see her love again.]]
* PurpleIsPowerful: Merga is very strong, and she wears purple armor. The Metal-aligned Eclipse armor also turns her wings and afterimages purple.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: She lived long back when dragons were at their prime centuries ago (even though she spent most of these centuries sealed away in the crystal prison).
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: [[spoiler:In the GoldenEnding, she seemingly sacrifices herself to save Lilac after the latter is knocked out by Syntax and sent down a bottomless pit. Though like in the normal ending, her body is never found and Lilac herself doesn't think she's dead.]]
* RedemptionDemotion: [[spoiler: Completely averted. Once she steps in to help the heroines defeat Bakunawa Fusion, her contribution ''dramatically'' outweighs the three you aren't playing as. Not only does she shatter the robot's health regenerating horn in one strike, but after update 1.2.6r, her Dragon Boosts do markedly more damage than any of the other assist attacks.]]
* RedemptionRejection: [[spoiler:In Lilac's ending, after the final battle she tries one last time to convince Merga to see reason, giving a big speech about how far she's come thanks to her own friends and that wallowing in the past has only caused Merga pain and suffering. Sadly, Bakunawa falling apart interrupts them both, triggering the final stage of Merga's VillainousBreakdown.]]
* RevengeBeforeReason: [[spoiler:Her primary goal is to claim revenge on the earth dragon kin for wiping out the water dragons, but her obsession with revenge drives her to extreme lengths without care for anyone who gets caught in the crossfire, and to her ends, she was willing to destroy Avalice's moon and leave the planet a barren, lifeless rock as she'd leave it to rot behind. And even when the heroes and the Magister try to convince her to let go of her insane plans and spare people of Avalice for a chance to reveal to public what the Earth Dragons have done, she refuses to let go of her lust for vengeance, and still holds on to it even as she's defeated and Bakunawa begins to fall apart, which leads to her [[NeverFoundTheBody seeming]] death. Subverted in the True Ending, in which Lilac has found a recording of [[TheLostLenore Cordelia]], and seeing her shocks Merga out of her rage long enough to actually consider their words - unfortunately, [[HijackedByGanon Syntax has other ideas]].]]
* ScaryTeeth: Whenever she opens her mouth wide, as she does upon first being released from the crystal, she shows off a ring of vicious pointed teeth.
* ScreamingWarrior: Merga screams out as she fights, typically in preparation of something big, though it sounds less like a scream and more like an agonized wail.
* SealedEvilInACan: She was imprisoned within an underwater prison until the Kingdom Stone was destroyed despite the heroes' efforts in the first game's climax. [[NiceJobBreakingItHero Oops]].
* ShameIfSomethingHappened: After Corazon fails to secure Pangu due to the interference of Lilac and Co., Merga reminds her [[ImpliedDeathThreat she can't guarantee the safety of her or her family]] unless she fulfills her duties. [[spoiler:Onboard the Bakunawa in Carol's story, she outright tells Cory to rein her sister in lest she do so herself, and if Cory hadn't [[TakingTheBullet knocked Carol aside]], she would have done just that.]]
* ASharedSuffering: The primary reason behind her VillainRespect for Lilac is because of their mutual status as the last water dragons to exist on Avalice. For that reason, Merga is much more willing to try to make Lilac understand her point of view, and even offers her a chance to escape from Avalice together with her, and it was only when Lilac made it clear that she ''won't'' abandon her friends and allies when Merga stopped hesitating in trying to cut her down. Lilac, in turn, tries to reason with Merga and hopes to convince her to stand down non-lethally.
* SheWhoFightsMonsters: [[spoiler:In her quest to avenge her race, she ends up becoming a planetary threat, willing to leave the planet as a wasteland just to spite the Earth Dragons.]]
* SuperNotDrowningSkills: Was able to survive at the bottom of the sea for centuries in her crystal prison.
* SuperSoldier: Said to be one of these from the first and greatest war of Avalice.
* SympathyForTheDevil: Though Lilac makes the decision, all four playable characters ultimately sympathize with Merga and want to reason with her, partly because of their own circumstances. Lilac understands Merga's loneliness as the last of her kind, Carol acknowledges the significance of Merga wanting to take action for those who share her blood, Milla believes Merga is afraid of the idea that she has to be a weapon, and Neera acknowledges that Merga feels a deep duty to right the wrongs done to her people.
* TragicVillain: [[spoiler: She turns evil after her people are enslaved and wiped out.]]
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler:She starts to lose her cool when the girls destroy her OrbitalLaser, but loses it completely during the final phase of the final battle, roaring ferally as she wildly zips around the arena and attacks like a rabid animal. And even after her defeat and Bakunawa is falling apart around her, she continues to madly rave that she will have her revenge on the Earth Dragons even as she falls to her [[NeverFoundTheBody apparent]] death. In the GoldenEnding, she doesn't fall to her death but undergoes a [[DespairEventHorizon completely different breakdown]] after being shown Cordelia's last recording, desperately pleading to see the recording again because she wants to see her love again.]]
* VillainHasAPoint: [[spoiler: While it does not excuse her desire to completely destroy Avalice, several characters agree that Merga is right to be angry about the mistreatment of her race in the past and it’s understandable how she has the desire to avenge their extermination.]]
* VillainRespect: Merga displayed some respect for Lilac due to her being a fellow water dragon, and, after sharing with her her goals and past, she even offered her a chance to leave Avalice together with her on Bakunawa. She was also impressed by how Lilac was able to resist falling into unconsciousness after she used a trick bomb on her.
* WeCanRuleTogether: After telling Lilac to come to Gravity Bubble, Merga offered her to come with her on Bakunawa and move to find another home in space while leaving Avalice behind to rot. However, when Lilac refused, Merga was willing to let her die with the rest of Avalice.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Despite everything Merga has done, it's hard to not sympathize with her once you learn her past; [[spoiler:she is one of the last surviving Water Dragons, a race that was enslaved and genocided by the Earth Dragons, and was sealed away for a hundred years underwater as [[WrittenByTheWinners her kin was villainized while her enemies painted themselves as innocent and peaceful party]]. With that in mind, her goal for {{revenge}} becomes much more understandable, and the likes of Kalaw and even the Magister agreed that [[VillainHasAPoint she has every right to be angry at them for it]].]]

[[folder:Corazon "Cory" Tea]]
[[quoteright:280:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/corazon_2.png]]
->''"Let me bring you up to speed. The name's Corazon! [[RedBaron Captain of the Sigwada and Mercenary Extraordinaire!]] In the flesh."''
->'''Voiced by:''' Lindsay Jones

Carol's older sister. Taken from the official website: "Known more commonly as Cory, this daring pilot always looks for a reason to take to the skies, even if it means doing dirty work for less-than-savory clients. Her personal airship, the Sigwada, is packed with hundreds of smaller drone ships that can swarm and distract her targets while she makes off with the goods."
----
* AllYourPowersCombined: Her moveset has elements of Lilac's (a dragon boost like maneuver that similarly can't be easily parried), Carol's (her use of the same jumping pads and a few rolling attacks) and Milla's (a projectile via a laser gun).
* AntiVillain: She works with less savory individuals than the Scarves and is involved in questionable practices, but doesn't seem to harbor any genuine hostility for Carol. [[spoiler:In fact, it turns out that the only reason she's even working with Merga is ''because'' Merga ([[ILied falsely]]) promised her she would spare Carol and let them both live aboard Bakunawa as her servants once she completed her revenge.]]
* BusmansVocabulary: Her speech is peppered with aviator jargon, such as using "throttle back" in place of "slow down", "fangs out" as a call for battle, and declaring the start of battle with the call to "kick the tires and light the fires", a term used to refer to the aircraft takeoff, among other things.
* CoolAirship: Corazon's personal battleship, the Sigwada, is [[FlyingSeafoodSpecial shaped like an orca]] and quite large compared to Zao's airship, which is much smaller in comparison.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: It's revealed that she shares Carol's dislike of raisins [[spoiler:after she takes a cut from Eclipse Merga in Carol's stead]]. Mostly because one of the side effects of Milla's treatment is that...
-->'''Cory:''' '''''HAAAAAAAAAAA''''' ''everything tastes like raisins!''
* EvilCounterpart: To Carol. Despite the two being wildcat sisters, Cory only works for those who are willing to pay whereas her younger sister Carol freeloads off of herself after quitting working for the Red Scarves. However, Cory does care for Carol's safety, even if she doesn't have high hopes for the idea that Merga could be stopped.
* FragileSpeedster: She's quick-footed and more then capable of outpacing the heroes but much like Spade before her, It doesn't take too many hits to bring her down. Notably, she's the weakest member of Merga's allies HP-wise. [[note]]Askal has 14 petals of HP in his fight in Diamond Point, and while Captain Kalaw starts with 7 HP, he gains an extra 7 once he enters his second phase, giving him the same amount as Askal. Aaa's not fought outside of his mechs, but they're fairly hardy, with the Astral Golmech having 20 total petals of HP, with Aaa's portion having 8. Meanwhile, Corazon, while having 2 phases in her Clockwork Arboretum fight, only has a total of 7 petals.[[/note]]
* GetBackHereBoss: Much like with Spade, the greatest challenge of her fight is actually hitting her. ''Unlike'' Spade, Lilac can't as easily close the distance due to Corazon possessing a Dragon Boost-like manuever of her own.
* GogglesDoNothing: She is a pilot, so it makes sense that she'd have these if nothing else than to sell the character design.
* LaserGuidedKarma: [[spoiler:For her hand in aiding and abetting Merga's apocalyptic scheme, she is sentenced to six months of community service like the rest, but her time is spent repairing Shang Tu Palace alongside [[PungeonMaster Carol]]; more importantly, she has to surrender the Sigwada to the Parusan Air Force, meaning her life of crime is over.]]
* ParentheticalSwearing: Cory peppers her dialogue with military lingo, so she manages to squeeze a curse under the radar when cornered by the heroes on the Sigwada.
-->'''Cory:''' Well, ain't this a charlie foxtrot [[labelnote:*]]Military lingo for a chaotic situation; more specifically, a clusterfuck.[[/labelnote]] of a situation? Sorry, sis. Another time.
** [[spoiler:In Carol's ending, she calls the fact that she has to repair Shang Tu's palace all by herself ''and'' give up the Sigwada to the Parusian Air Force "Complete delta sierra!"[[labelnote:*]]Dogshit[[/labelnote]]]]
* PlayingWithFire: Fire elemental, and with a gun that fires flaming rounds. While an unapologteic, passionate sky pirate, she also genuinely loves and cares for her sister, and only has her safety in mind at all times.
* RecurringBoss: Fought in Airship Sigwada, then again in [[spoiler: Clockwork Arboretum]]. Subverted for Carol, however; she's only fought once, in the latter stage.
* RedOniBlueOni: The calm and collected blue oni to Aaa's red oni.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She looks similar to her younger sister Carol.
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler:After her final defeat aboard Bakunawa, Merga appears and tries to kill Carol herself, but Corazon pushes Carol out of the way and takes the blow herself. Thankfully, she survives with Milla's help, but spends the rest of the story knocked out until the ending.]]

Corazon's hyperactive assistant. Taken from the official website: "Whenever this little tarsier is asked for his name, he just screams. Nobody knows if that's his real answer or if he just likes messing around. In any case, the bug-eyed chimp has a near-psychotic obsession with engineering and enjoys building and piloting all sorts of crazy contraptions. Could he have something to do with the wave of robot attacks plaguing the three kingdoms?"
----
* BrattyHalfPint: A tarsier child, and quite the troublemaker.
* ChildProdigy: After the group's first encounter with Aaa, in which they've just broken apart a robot he constructed by himself and was piloting, Milla refers to him as a kid genius.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: [[spoiler:Following the final fight against him in the Bakunawa, he and Milla quickly become friends.]]
* DistantReactionShot: Zig-zagged. [[spoiler:After 'winning' against Serpentine at Nalao Lake, he discovers that the 'prize' he won was already taken by his 'allies', who have already left.]]
-->'''Aaa:''' Victory! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! And now what's yours is MINE! Huh? Where did my playmates go? (''camera zooms out'') Guys? Hello? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! (''camera zooms close up'') YOU GUYS ARE JERKS!!
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: He's called "Aaa" due to constantly screaming whenever someone asks for his name. Milla demonstrates this [[spoiler:should another heroine best him in the Refinery Room]].
-->'''Other Character:''' His name is "Aaa"?\
'''Milla:''' Hey, friend. What's your name?\
'''Aaa:''' AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-\
'''Milla:''' See?
* EvilCounterpart: To Milla. Both are themed after the color orange and they serve as TheSmartGuy of both factions. Though while Milla is more into chemistry, Aaa is more into mechanics. [[spoiler:They eventually become close allies after the events of Refinery Room because of their similar traits.]]
* ExtraOreDinary: Metal elemental. Prodigous robotics expertise aside, he is also stubborn to such an absurd fault that so much as asking his name makes him scream.
* GadgeteerGenius: He has a rather unhealthy obsession with machinery and enjoys building and piloting all sorts of machines and may possibly be the one behind the robot attacks.
* GogglesDoNothing: He's an engineer, so it makes sense he'd have mechanic goggles on his head.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: [[spoiler:It turns out this is why Aaa is working for Merga; Aaa only has his "robot buddies" (that he made himself) for friends, so Merga promised him that if he helped her, she would take him into outer space with her so he could make lots of new friends off-world. After the final fight against him, Milla convinces Aaa to stand down by promising that ''she'll'' be his new friend.]]
* LaserGuidedKarma: [[spoiler:His six months of community service involves repairing the fossils he trashed at the Avian Museum; he was likely spared the death sentence due to being a minor. At least he has Milla for company.]]
* ManiacMonkeys: If this monkey didn't make multiple killer robots and butt heads with the heroines, he wouldn't qualify for this trope at all.
* MoodSwinger: Goes from laughing like a maniac to pouting after being called off by Corazon.
* NotThatKindOfDoctor: [[spoiler:In Milla's ending, its revealed that General Gong ordered him to rebuild the Avian Museum and its dinosaur exhibit as part of his community service, but it turns out he doesn't actually know that much about dinosaurs compared to robots, and just thinks dinosaurs are cool. Milla isn't thrilled to learn this, but sticks it out for him.]]
* RecurringBoss: Fought multiple times in the game: first in his Kakugan mech, then in [[spoiler: the BFF-2000]], then the Tunnel Driver, then [[spoiler: the Rail Driver once Bakunawa gets stormed into, and finally the Astral Golmech a stage after]].
* RedOniBlueOni: The fiery psychotic red oni to Corazon's blue oni.
* SillySimian: Even if he's absolutely nuts, he's also endearingly silly as a character, what with his manic personality clashing with the more down-to-earth characters.
* ThemeNaming: Some of Aaa's machines have names based off of toys, such as the [[Franchise/{{Tamagotchi}} Traumagotcha]] and [[Franchise/{{Bakugan}} Kakugan]]. Fittingly enough, a lot of Aaa's constructs are very silly in appearance and ability in comparison to true war machines like Brevon's.
* WickedToymaker: See ThemeNaming. Aaa isn't necessarily ''wicked'' per se, but his "friends" are still very much a threat, and the destruction of Dragon Valley at the hands of his "buddies" kickstarts the plot.

The reigning champion of Shang Mu's Battlesphere. Taken from the official website: "He's the Defender of the Defenseless, the Red Wing of Justice, Captaaaaain Kalaw! When this beaked marauder isn't out rescuing Shang Mu's citizens from the clutches of evil, he trains in the city's Battlesphere: a massive arena where fighters, racers, and heroes from all over the world come to test their skills. In fact, he's the reigning champion!"
----
* AbortedArc: [[spoiler:Merga's other underlings continue their character arcs aboard Bakunawa, having to reconcile their well-intentioned motivations to help her against her true intention to ravage Avalice. Kalaw, meanwhile, completely disappears from the plot after his defeat on Sky Bridge, never having any such reconciliation. His only subsequent appearance is at the ending.]]
* AccidentalPublicConfession: [[spoiler:After his defeat on Sky Bridge, he unwittingly confesses into the [[HoistByHisOwnPetard camera he brought along to broadcast his heroics]] exactly why he joined up with Merga, only to backpedal and claim he was brainwashed by Lilac and her friends into saying these things. Some people don't buy it, but he still keeps his fame in the Battlesphere.]]
* ADogNamedDog: A ''rufous hornbill'' named Captain Kalaw[[note]]Kalaw is a local nickname to the ''rufous hornbill''[[/note]]. To add bonus points, the ''rufous hornbill'' is native to the Philippines, and Captain Kalaw comes from the Philippines {{Expy}}, Parusa.
* BeneathTheMask: [[spoiler:Behind all his bluster and grandstanding, he's painfully aware of the fact that he's just a glorified entertainer forced to perform for a fickle audience and desperately wishes to become a ''true'' hero. The whole reason he joined Merga was because he believes helping her avenge her people will be his first truly heroic act.]]
* BlowYouAway: He can create tornados to attack with, and the high winds of his arena mean you can fly nearly as freely as he can while fighting him.
* EngineeredHeroics: [[spoiler:In Sky Bridge, his big plan is to broadcast himself stopping the eruption of a volcano he himself helped make active as part of activating Bakunawa's beacons.]]
* FamedInStory: He's quite famous in Shang Mu, even having multiple video games based on his heroics. [[spoiler:He was also this in Parusa, but his breakdown on-air at the Sky Bridge tanked his reputation among the locals.]]
* FeatheredFiend: [[spoiler:He was [[TheMole secretly working for Merga]] under the impression that aiding her in restoring Bakunawa will be his first truly "heroic" act, making him this.]]
* GreenThumb: Wood elemental officially, appropriate for a heroic, bombastic, tireless idealist. [[spoiler:He also embodies some of wood's flexibility, working for Merga to accomplish truly heroic things, rather than just superficial ones, and bounces back from hardships with gusto.]]
* {{Hypocrite}}: He claims to want to be an actual hero instead of pretending to be one on Tri-Kingdom TV, but when initially proposed to help counter the creature attacks? [[spoiler:By a former Battlesphere champion, no less?]]
-->'''Neera:''' "Something about 'THE RED WING OF JUSTICE WILL NOT BE DRAFTED INTO MILITARY SERVICE!' Ahem."
* LargeHam: As befitting a world famous hero used to soaking up the spotlight.
* MilesGloriosus: Despite his bravado and renown, his attempts to actually act like a hero pale in comparison to the protagonists, and they even end up butting heads because he wants to be the one to save the world [[spoiler:by fighting for Merga and helping her achieve "justice"]].
* TheMole: [[spoiler:He's been working for Merga since before Lilac's group tries to recruit him, as he considers Merga's cause to be on the side of justice.]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: [[spoiler:He briefly drops both his heroic tone of voice and over the top manerisms to [[MotiveRant spill his guts about his true aspiration to be heroic]].]]
* RecurringBoss: First fought in a [[TheBigRace race]] in the Battlesphere, [[spoiler: then later inside of the Beast 3 mech in the Auditorium. He's finally fought proper in Sky Bridge]].
* RedBaron: He's known as both the "Defender of the Defenseless" and the "Red Wing of Justice".
* {{Unishment}}: [[spoiler:Picking up trash may seem soft compared to Merga's other co-conspirators, but when you consider he managed to get his job as Battlesphere champion back relatively painlessly, it feels like a slap to the wrist. To be fair, he was out of the running before Merga raised Bakunawa, so he likely got off lighter compared to the others, and he takes his punishment in stride.]]
