----

* CastOfSnowflakes: All fifteen of the students are unique from one another in some way, whether that be in appearance or personality.
* ColorCodedCharacters: Judging by the cover art, the students seem to have some color associated with them:
** Hana: Light Blue
** Mikio: Neon Green
** Akira: Red
** Hiroshi: Gray
** Azami: Purple
** Rumi: Blue
** Shiori: White
** Tadao: Orange
** Hinata: Blue-Violet
** Ryoto: Gray-Blue
** Asuna: Yellow
** Kaneki: Brown
** Saku: Gold
** Shiro: Silver
** Itachi: Dark Green
* DitzyGenius: Many of the students are quite...eccentric, but they were accepted into Hope's Peak for a reason.
* DwindlingParty: With at least two students dying per chapter, not to mention that this is Danganronpa, this is bound to happen.
* EverythingsBetterWithSamurai: Saku's hair is pulled into a ponytail reminiscent of the kind a samurai would have. And then there's everything about Itachi (minus his hairstyle, ironically).
* Foil:
** Hana and Akira. Both want to find the truth behind the murders that occur, both want to find a way to escape the castle and end the killing game, neither of them intend to commit any murders of their own, and they both try to prevent any murders when they can. However, Akira is cold-hearted and holds quite a bit of distrust towards the other students, not showing much care for them at all; meanwhile, Hana is empathetic and caring, and desires to protect her friends out of genuine care for all of them.
** Hiroshi and Hana. Both care about their fellow classmates to a high degree and wish to find the truth of the murders for the sake of those who are still alive, and they both value emotions and feeling empathy for their friends; however, while Hiroshi isn't one to show his emotions too much, Hana is quite expressive with hers. Also, Hana tends to favor emotions over logic, while Hiroshi acts as a balance between the two.
** Kaneki and Itachi. Both are some of the tallest students in the class, both have a friend whom they genuinely care for (Asuna and Shiro respectively), and they are both afflicted by a dark past that they wish to atone for. However, while Kaneki is atoning for her own past actions, Itachi is trying to atone for somebody else's (his father's) actions. Also, how they try to atone is different: Kaneki was willing to put her own life at risk to save the life of Asuna in order to keep history from repeating itself, Itachi was willing to kill and sacrifice his classmates if it meant graduating and restoring his family's honor.
** The treatment of their respective friends also differs; though Kaneki and Itachi cared for Asuna and Shiro, Kaneki never acted to betray Asuna's trust, while Itachi exploited Shiro's trust to help in his murder plot (though he feels remorseful about it later).
* FreudianTrio: The main trio of Hana, Hiroshi, and Akira fall into this:
** Hana is the Id, with her impulsiveness and her tendency to be guided by her feelings.
** Akira is the Superego, as she rejects feeling and emotions and makes her decisions based on evidence and facts.
** Hiroshi is the Ego, since he is sensitive to his feelings like Hana, but understands that logic is just as important when it comes to making conclusions.
* IconicItem: All of the students have an accessory or item tied to them:
** Hana's necklace
** Mikio's glasses
** Akira's tie
** Hiroshi's vest
** Azami's cloak
** Rumi's jacket
** Shiori's labcoat
** Tadao's gloves
** Hinata's scarf
** Ryoto's cape
** Asuna's hairpin
** Kaneki's fedora
** Saku's shorts
** Shiro's notebook
** Itachi's bandanna
** Nanako's bracelet
* ImplausibleHairColor: While a handful of students actually have hair colors that would be normal in Japan, another handful...not so much. While one could explain Hana and Asuna's hair as the two likely coming from mixed heritage, and Ryoto and Hinata may have dyed their hair, that still leaves no explanation for Akira's bright red, Mikio's dark blue, Rumi's sky blue, and Shiro's silver hair colors. Then there's Nanako's hair, which was a bright lime green prior to The Tragedy and an ugly, washed-out green in the present.
* LastNameBasis: Surprisingly averted, as each student refers to the others by their first names. The only characters who play this trope straight are Akira and Tadao.
* LimitedWardrobe: The students are never described as wearing anything other than the outfits described in the prologue (outside of some mentions of pajamas).
* MoralityChain: Chapters 5 and 6 reveal (or at least heavily imply) the rest of the 80th Class is this towards Hana. By remembering how her friends/classmates supported each other after each trial, Hana is finally able to break free of her (semi-subconscious) cynical mindset in Chapter 5. Then, Chapter 6 implies the reason Hana fell into despair during The Tragedy was because none of her friends were around to support her when she experienced some unspecified event that caused her to snap entirely, not to mention it is the words of Akira and the other survivors that bring Hana out of her catatonic state after she discovers the truth about everything and restore her will to end the killing game.
* OddFriendship:
** The tall, dark, and stoic Itachi and the short, bright, and cheerful Shiro. Despite appearing to be polar opposites, the pair has been depicted as getting along quite well throughout the story.
** The sarcastic and serious Shiori and the bubbly and outgoing Rumi.
* RedOniBlueOni:
** Inverted with Hana and Akira; Hana is the passionate red to Akira's stoic blue, despite Hana being associated with blue and Akira with red.
** Bold and Cloudcuckoolander eccentric Kaneki is the red to Asuna's soft-spoken and timid blue.
** Keet Cheerful and artistic Shiro serves as the red to the silent Itachi's blue.
** Constantly sarcastic and cold Shiori is the blue to Genki Girl Rumi's red. Somewhat inverted in that Rumi is associated with the color blue.
* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack: Several characters- namely Mikio, Azami, and Asuna- seem to be wearing their regular uniforms from their old school (or, in Azami's case, a modified version of hers).
* ShutUpHannibal: How the students tend to react to some of Monokuma's attempts at verbally breaking them.
* TeenGenius: Comes with having an "Ultimate" status.
* WackyHomeroom: This is an inevitability, considering how quirky the characters can get.

->"I can't solve a murder! I'm just a surfer girl, I'm no investigator!"

The protagonist of Fractured Fates. Despite her average appearance, Hana is known for her practically unparalleled ability on a surfboard. She has participated in dozens of competitions over the years, and has come out on top every time no matter the conditions. She is very in touch with her emotions, and would rather solve her problems through feeling rather than pure logic.\

In Chapter 5, she realizes the trial is meant to be unwinnable and comes up with a plan to create a five-way tie in the voting to force the trial into a draw. However, Monokuma still forces her and her classmates into a mass execution, but they are all saved by a castle-wide blackout. Chapter 6 ultimately reveals she is a devoted agent of Dark Hand who helped create the killing game and was supposed to be the mastermind before her memories were erased by Hiroshi and Nanako. In the end, Hana renounces her old self as a member of Dark Hand and becomes determined to atone for her past sins, starting by ending the killing game she started. She is successful in activating the facility's manual killswitch, but is mortally wounded by Nanako in the process, making her the final death in the killing game.
----
* AccentuateTheNegative:
** Downplayed and subverted. Hana doesn't actually start showing a true cynical side until partway through Chapter 3, and even then it only shows up on occasion. The subversion comes in when Hana herself doesn't understand why she's begun to feel such negativity, initially attributing it to the stress of the killing game and in Chapter 4 claiming the quiet of the watchtower is causing it.
** In addition, every time she slips into this more negative mindset, she immediately tries to stop herself from thinking like that further, often reminding herself that she's not the cynical type.
** It starts to become slightly less downplayed come Chapter 5, although even Hana is still unsure what the cause of her sudden cynicism actually is.
* AllLovingHero: Though some of her classmates' behaviors can get on her nerves (namely Akira's coldness and Tadao's unwillingness to be a part of the group), Hana genuinely cares about all of them and does what she can to help them.
* AmateurSleuth: Extremely so, considering her talent doesn't even have anything to do with solving crimes to begin with. She still has to help solve her peers' murders, though.
* AmbiguousStartOfDarkness: The cause of her turn to despair and subsequent joining of Dark Hand is ultimately left a complete mystery. The only thing known for certain is that whatever caused Hana to snap occurred at some point after the fall of Hope's Peak but before the Killing School Life (as she was already a Dark Hand agent by the time the 78th Class's killing game ended). Chapter 6 also implies she wouldn't have gone mad if she had at least some of her classmates/friends around at the time to bring her out of her despair like they did in the final trial- however, how true this is is uncertain in and of itself. It also doesn't help that Hana had her memories of the Tragedy erased prior to the killing game, so even she herself doesn't remember how or when or why she joined Dark Hand.
* AtomicFBomb: "TADAO, YOU SON OF A BITCH!"
* TheAtoner: She vows to become this after learning about her past as Agent 44; it doesn't last long, as she dies soon after, but she spends her last moments atoning as best as she can.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Being the Ultimate Surfer, it's clear she has talent, but it is completely useless in the context of a killing game inside a castle. Akira not only points this out to her in the second trial, but also during her first Free Time Event. Hana herself even acknowledges this in the quote above.
* BerserkButton:
** She snaps hard at Akira following the fourth execution due to the latter's cold-hearted attitude towards the deaths of Shiori and Rumi- it's even complimented by Berserker Tears.
** Combined with her overwhelming grief over Hiroshi's death, Hana becomes outright furious at the mere presence of Monokuma following the discovery of Hiroshi's corpse, so much so that she even tries to physically attack the bear.
* BigShutUp: Furiously throws one of these at Monokuma shortly after the first execution.
* BlatantLies: While investigating the North Wing, Hana is stressed due to a combination of her cynical thoughts becoming stronger and the information she received on her e-Handbook the night before regarding The Tragedy. Because of this, she has to continuously tell a concerned Hiroshi that there is nothing strange going on with her...despite her visible anxiety and dodgy nature throughout.
* CatchPhrase:
** "Wait, that's wrong!" whenever she finds a contradiction in someone's statement.
** "I'll cut through your claim!" during segments meant to resemble Rebuttal Showdowns.
** "Here's what I think happened!" just before the imitation Closing Argument.
*** Hana's catchphrases are lampshaded on several occasions. For example:
--->Shiori: [after the first "Rebuttal Showdown"] ...What was that?
--->Hana: ...Um...I got caught up in the moment again.
* ClearMyName: She has to do this in the latter half of the fifth trial after accidentally revealing some information that mistakenly implicates her as the killer.
* TheConfidant: Hana's kind and friendly nature makes it easy for the students to be able to talk to her as seen in several students' Free Time Events.
* CreateYourOwnVillain: Nanako was not supposed to be the mastermind- in fact, she was very much on Hiroshi's side in trying to save the rest of the 80th Class without killing Hana, assisting him as a partner of sorts. However, Hana/Agent 44 seemed to realize someone was plotting against her, leading to her creating a backup plan with (presumably) Kurosora: to force either Nanako or Hiroshi into becoming the new mastermind should something happen to Hana. So, when Hiroshi and Nanako erase Hana's memory of everything after her initial arrival to Hope's Peak, Dark Hand chooses Nanako as the "replacement", leading to the torture that would physically and mentally scar Nanako to the point of insanity, resulting in Nanako's burning resentment towards Hana and powerful desire to mastermind the killing game to get revenge on her.
* DeclarationOfProtection: A downplayed example; Hana never explicitly declares protection, but during a conversation with Kaneki she tells her that she's "not losing anyone like that again" (referring to the first murder case). Unfortunately, it doesn't do any good, as Kaneki is murdered that night.
* DefiantToTheEnd: Despite knowing she will be killed trying to activate the castle's killswitch, Hana overcomes her fear and shows nothing but determination against Nanako in the end.
-->Nanako: Still- do you really think you can dodge my spears?
-->Hana: No- but I don't need to. I just have to survive long enough to scan my finger on that screen, then press the button.
-->Nanako: Hahahaha! And you think you'll be able to do that with a bunch of spears in you? I'm not gonna hold back at all, you know! In case you couldn't tell- I'm a little bit crazy, you know?
-->[...]
-->Hana: ...A little bit crazy, huh? So am I.
* DespairEventHorizon: She very nearly crosses this after finding out about her past as a Dark Hand member and the original mastermind- fortunately, she recovers. It's also implied she already crossed this in the past as a result of something that happened during The Tragedy, which is what resulted in her joining Dark Hand.
* Determinator: When she has her mind set on something, Hana isn't one to give up on it so easily. A notable example is during the second trial; when Hana finally decides to believe in Asuna, she's willing to go up against Akira in order to prove her innocence.
** The end of Chapter 3 further proves this, as she resolves to follow the mysterious message's words and find an escape from the castle without murdering anyone, no matter what it might cost her.
* DevilsAdvocate: Akira accuses her of being one during Chapter 5's trial as a result of her constantly arguing against many of the main theories during trials with little evidence at first (even if she turns out to be right in the end).
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: She attempts to do this in Chapter 5 towards Monokuma, despite violence against him being against the rules; unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), Monokuma easily dodged and knocked out Hana in response, so it is ultimately averted.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: During the third trial, Hana attempts to explain when someone could have placed the Despair Drink in with the other drinks in the banquet room, citing when Rumi and Tadao saw Saku messing around with the beverages some time before the party. It isn't until Akira starts speaking about this that she realizes she's just implicated Saku as the killer.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: Almost happens in Chapter 3 following her attack in the wine room (in Rumi's arms, to be more specific)- but she gets better, so it's ultimately averted.
* DisappointedByTheMotive: Hana was extremely dumbfounded when Tadao revealed his motive for committing double murder was, to put it simply, so he could escape and open a restaurant.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: At the climax of the third trial, Tadao refuses to listen to Hana's arguments due to the fact that she has next to no real skill in investigation. Right after that, as Akira is about to agree with Hana, she does agree that Hana isn't a top detective and that her deductions were mostly based on instinct and luck instead of real skill. Hana, meanwhile, is wondering what it would take to "get some validation around here."
* DumbBlonde: Downplayed; while Hana is certainly no idiot, but she does have her moments of these.
* TheEmpath: Hiroshi sees her as this in one of his Free Time Events, believing that being in touch with her own emotions is what allows her to better understand the emotions of others.
** Later on, in Chapter 4, Shiori tells Hana she is much better at "speaking from the heart" than she at "speaking from the head".
* FailedASpotCheck: During Part 4 of Chapter 2, she and Ryoto initially fail to notice a discolored spot on one of the walls of the study. Possibly justified, however, in that they were more focused on figuring out what had caused Asuna to flee the room in terror.
* FigureItOutYourself: She is frequently forced to do this during trials, mostly due to Hiroshi giving her rather cryptic hints towards what is going on.
* ForgivenButNotForgotten: After spending a portion of Chapter 3 feeling conflicted about her feelings towards the blackened students, she ultimately adopts this mindset towards them.
* FreakOut: She has pretty substantial breakdown following Chapter 4's trial. First, she lashes out at Akira (physically and verbally) after the latter disrespects Shiori, Rumi, and Hinata; then, after returning to her bedroom, she angrily throws her e-Handbook across the room before furiously pounding the bedroom wall until she tires herself out, leaving her kneeling on the floor and sobbing.
* GoMadFromTheRevelation: She does not take the revelation that she was Agent 44 (aka the original mastermind and a loyal Dark Hand member) well, falling into a completely catatonic and unresponsive state as a result.
* GutFeeling: Some of her conclusions come down to this.
* HeIsNotMyBoyfriend: Hana is not happy whenever someone (mostly Rumi) suggests that she and Hiroshi are more than just friends.
* HeelRealization: After overcoming her Heroic BSoD, Hana acknowledges the terrible things she did as Agent 44 (most of which she still doesn't remember) and vows to make up for them.
* HeroicBSOD: Hana falls into one several times, but most notably after witnessing Azami's execution.
** She goes through another one starting towards the end of the fourth trial, but it gets worse after Rumi's execution and her blow-up at Akira.
** Hana experiences her worst one in the story after finding out she was a member of Dark Hand, as well as discovering she was the one who was supposed to mastermind the killing game rather than Nanako.
* HeroicResolve: Despite being speared in three separate places in the chest/stomach several feet away from the button, Hana manages to fight through the agony long enough to take those last few steps to the button, then activate and use the killswitch to shut the killing game down.
* HeroicSacrifice: In order to activate the bunker's killswitch and shut the facility (and the bombs) down, Hana has to brave Nanako and her spear guns known as the Arms of Gungnir, which will certainly result in her death. Of course, she does so- indeed, she dies in the process, but she succeeds in shutting the bunker and the bombs down, ending the killing game she herself started and allowing her classmates to escape once and for all.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Is prone to putting herself down from time to time.
* HonorBeforeReason:
** Due to her trait of following her emotions rather than logic, she tends to fall into this on occasion- most notably during class trials when she defends a prime suspect despite the evidence pointing to them (Asuna in Chapter 2, the deceased Saku in Chapter 3, Ryoto and then Hinata in Chapter 4).
** Notably downplayed in Hinata's case, as Hana has actual evidence to initially justify her belief in his innocence.
* HopeIsScary: She somewhat adopts this mindset in Chapter 5, and prior to that it briefly manifested in her in Chapters 3 and 4. However, it appears as if Hana is not in complete control of these feelings, so it appears subverted. (See also Accentuate the Negative above.)
* HowlOfSorrow: She does this not long after initially discovering Hiroshi's body.
* InUniverseFactoidFailure:
** In Chapter 1, Hana doesn't realize she actually needs to corroborate someone's alibi...not to mention thinking "corroborate" is "something metals do".
** In Chapter 2, she mistakenly believes slashed throats are instant death due to their portrayal in the media. Hiroshi, however, corrects her misconception in...rather disturbing detail.
* ITakeOffenseToThatLastOne: During the second trial, Akira tells Hana that she is: "not smart", a "fool", that her talent is useless for investigating, and that she's just "someone who spends her days on a decorated piece of wood in the ocean." Hana's response to this is to try and tell Akira that surfboards are actually quite complex.
* ItWasAGift:
** The photograph of her and her parents standing outside Hope's Peak is...well, a gift from them.
** The same applies to her necklace as revealed in Hinata's third Free Time Event.
* IdiotHair: It comes with being a Danganronpa protagonist.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice:
** It's implied her execution would have ended this way- more specifically, she would have been stabbed on the top of a rock spire jutting out of the ocean after being flung towards it by a huge wave.
** This is how she actually dies at the end of Chapter 6- being impaled by Nanako's three remaining spears launched from the Arms of Gungnir, then bleeding to death soon after.
* MeaningfulEcho: Hiroshi's advice to her, "trust in the evidence", is something she tells herself whenever she is nervous or doubtful during a trial- doubly so going into the fifth trial, where Hiroshi himself is the victim.
* MoodSwinger: Hana's emotional state is capable of changing very quickly. In one of Hiroshi's Free Time Events, she tells him some of her classmates at her previous high school said she was "as sensitive as a landmine".
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: She is horrified when her five-way tie plan doesn't work and Monokuma chooses to execute the class anyways, even claiming she "deserved" to be punched by Akira after the fact.
** Then in Chapter 6, she has this reaction after learning the truth about the awful things she did as Agent 44, including starting the killing game that killed many of her friends.
* NiceGirl: For the most part, Hana is one of the nicest students in the cast.
* NoJustNoReaction: Hana mentally tells herself this at the beginning of Chapter 4 when she starts to wonder if Hiroshi has something to do with the mystery behind the killing game.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: In the fifth trial, she finally admits to Akira that the two have more in common than either of them want to admit: they both want to solve the murders and keep the blackened from winning, and they're both afraid of the consequences of losing a trial.
* OnlySaneMan: Somehow, she becomes this in the fifth trial- not only is she consistently the only student who doesn't make any blind accusations at any point, but she's also the first (and, initially, only) one to figure out the rigged nature of the trial.
* PassionateSportsGirl: Being the Ultimate Surfer, this is bound to some into play. One of Hiroshi's Free Time Events even has her wistfully saying how she wishes they were at Hope's Peak so she could practice her talent more.
* RapidFireNo: Hana does this (mentally) when she and Ryoto find Kaneki's corpse.
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: After learning she is actually Agent 44/the original mastermind of the Neo Life of Mutual Killing, she activates a killswitch that turns off almost all the power to the underground bunker, preventing Nanako's bombs from going off and finally putting an end to the killing game she started. However, Nanako stabs her several times using her spear guns, resulting in Hana dying from her injuries right afterwards.
* ReluctantHero:
** Hana really doesn't want to be the one to accuse her classmates of murder and ultimately find them convicted and sent to execution- but considering the alternative is the innocent students being killed instead...
** Further played for drama in Chapter 4; after it becomes clear that Rumi is the killer, she asks Hana to be the one to summarize the events of the case. However, Hana cannot bring herself to be the one to put the final nail in her friend's coffin once again, and so vehemently refuses.
* RightForTheWrongReasons: During the first half of the third trial, Hana claims the broken crate from the watchtower couldn't have been the weapon that was used to kill Shiro because it was too heavy for anyone to lift; Akira, however, points out how Saku could have easily lifted the crate and bashed Shiro with it. It's ultimately revealed that Hana was right the first time- the crate was not used to kill Shiro, but not because it was too heavy for anyone to lift.
* RhetoricalQuestionBlunder: During the second part of the third trial, when asked about how the crate from the watchtower could have been broken if it wasn't the murder weapon, Hana proceeds to ask if she ever brings up things she can't answer herself...before quickly adding to the others not to answer that.
* ScrewDestiny: When Nanako tries to make her believe she was always meant to keep being a Dark Hand member, Hana rejects this notion and claims that she still has a choice in how her fate goes- and she chooses to be Hana Amari over Agent 44.
* SkilledButNaive: She has been instrumental in solving the previous murders, but her reliance on her feelings and instincts leads to some naivety, which Akira calls her out on on several occasions.
* SpiritedCompetitor: Played with; in Shiori's fourth Free Time Event, Hana mentions how there are times in a competition when she's concerned about losing (something that has happened before), but it's pretty clear that, at the end the day, she still loves the sport win or lose.
* TapOnTheHead: The end of Chapter 3, Part 2 shows her on the receiving end of this by an unknown assailant, later revealed to be Tadao.
* TenderTears: Hana cries these following Azami's execution...but they quickly turn into Berserker Tears when Monokuma starts talking.
* ThisIsUnforgivable:
** She blames Monokuma for driving Azami to kill Mikio, shouting that she would never forgive him or whoever was controlling him.
** She has this attitude towards Akira and her coldness towards the others throughout Chapter 5 (although it is downplayed), as Hana stubbornly refuses to forgive her for her words following the fourth trial despite Hiroshi's insistence that she should.
* ThreateningShark: Her execution includes Hana being chased through the ocean by mechanical sharks.
* TomatoInTheMirror: She is the true identity of Agent 44- the devotee of Dark Hand who gave the group the idea to start a killing game, helped them create said killing game, and was supposed to the mastermind. However, she doesn't learn this until the final trial.
* TookALevelInCynicism: In the beginning of Chapter 5, Hana's thoughts of nihilism regarding the killing game begin to strengthen to the point where she is vocalizing her negative thoughts, although somewhat unconsciously.
* TragicKeepsake: At the end of Chapter 4, she keeps the pearl she found in the main hall of the East Wing, which had once been a part of the pearl bracelet Rumi wore.
* WeirdnessMagnet: Lampshaded in Chapter 4 when Monokuma furiously asks her why, every time "something happens", it always involves her somehow.
->Hana: IF I KNEW, I'D STOP!
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: She is deathly afraid of sharks.
* YouAreNotAlone:
** She attempts this when talking to an unstable Asuna in Chapter 3, telling her she understands how she's feeling about Kaneki's death...but this actually makes Asuna even angrier and worsens her condition.
** She tries this again in Part 4 of Chapter 3, with much better results.
** It is remembering this in regards to herself, her classmates in general, and how they all stuck together after each tragedy that allows her to (more or less) break free from her subconscious cynicism in Chapter 5.

->"No matter the people or the crime, so long as I am on the case- the truth will never be able to hide itself from me."

A young woman of smarts and class who is a force to be reckoned with in the courtroom. Learning the ins and outs of law from helping with her father's law firm, Akira is known for her relentless pursuit of the truth in every case she works. Though she acts as a leader figure for the other students, Akira is rather cold and condescending, rejecting emotions in favor of cold, hard logic.\

In Chapter 5, she goes along with Hana's plan to create a five-way tie in the voting and thus force the trial into a draw as a result of the trial being rigged. However, Monokuma still forces her and her classmates into a mass execution, but they are all saved by a castle-wide blackout. Akira goes on to survive the final trial and escape the underground bunker alongside the other surviving students.
----
* ADayInTheLimelight:
** She takes over as the POV character for the first half of Chapter 5's investigation due to Hana being knocked out by Monokuma.
** She also briefly becomes the POV character during the last part of the final trial, as well as becoming the POV character for the Epilogue.
* AntiHero: Akira genuinely wants to uncover the truth behind the murders, because finding the truth is her philosophy as a prosecutor, but her treatment of the other students while doing so is less than noble.
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: When given the opportunity (usually in regards to Hana), in-story and in Free Time Events, she won't hesitate to talk about how skilled and great she is at investigating and solving mysteries- most of the other students aren't amused.
* BatmanGambit: During the third trial, she deliberately waited to bring up her murder-suicide theory to see if someone else would bring up evidence that she hadn't seen yet and that would support her theory. Hana, being her usual vocal self, brings up how Rumi and Tadao encountered Saku in the banquet room, with Saku messing around with the drinks at the time. However, in her haste, she doesn't realize the evidence implicates Saku as both the one who planted the Despair Drink and the killer...but Akira, who was waiting for this exact opportunity, does.
* BreakTheHaughty:
** Experiences this after the fourth trial due to a combination of Hana smacking/screaming at her for disrespecting Shiori and Rumi and Hiroshi's "What The Hell, Hero?" directed at her- she is even rendered OOCIsSeriousBusiness completely speechless by these.
** To add to this, Akira acts far less commanding and more subdued towards the other students the morning after the fourth trial. In addition, she disappears from the investigation early on, refusing to accept Hiroshi's apology and outright ignoring Hana.
** She goes through this again in Chapter 5 after being faced with and revealing her fear of losing a class trial and, consequently, dying by the resulting execution.
* BrutalHonesty: She holds nothing back when speaking to the others, especially Hana.
->Akira: ...I never liked you, Amari.
* CharacterDevelopment:
** At the beginning of the story, Akira was cold and no-nonsense towards the other students, having little faith in them to not commit a murder and acting as their leader simply because she felt no one else would be capable. She also held no grief or saddness for the blackened students, no matter how sympathetic their motives were. A few instances of Break the Haughty as well as learning the truth that she and the other Ultimates were, in fact, classmates at one point cause her to rethink her entire attitude, and by the time of the Epilogue she is far more cooperative and courteous towards her classmates and even shows some sympathy for the deceased students (even the killers), as well as showing more emotion in general.
** Her relationship with Hana also ties into her character arc. At the start of the story, Akira barely tolerated Hana, but it wasn't any more severe than the way she interacted with the other students. Starting with the Chapter 2 trial, however, Akira grows to despise Hana because she hates being upstaged by someone like her as well as believing Hana puts the class through unnecessary risks during the class trials. After the events of Chapter 5, she shows more respect towards Hana and works alongside her rather than against her, even being the one to break Hana out of her Heroic BSoD during the climax of Chapter 6 and then grieve for her during the Epilogue.
* CrazyPrepared: Akira isn't willing to let anything that could be a lead or evidence slip away from her. Played for laughs when she takes Kaneki's fedora, of all things, because she thinks it could be evidence.
* CrusadingLawyer: Akira is a very serious prosecutor, focusing on finding the truth of any and every case she works.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: She has red eyes to match her hair color.
* DeathGlare: She is prone to this when angered or trying to get someone to do what she says- Hinata even nicknames her "Medusa" because of how effective it is.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Though she feels no sympathy for the killers, even Akira disapproves of Monokuma's executions, referring to them as "perversions of justice".
* Expy: Her arrogant attitude, stoic demeanor, and status as a rival-like character is very reminiscent of Byakuya Togami.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: When the giant judge Monokuma is about to slam its gavel down on Akira, all she does is close her eyes and await the killing blow. Sure, the execution is interrupted by the blackout, but still.
* FieryRedhead: Downplayed; she doesn't lose her cool or show much emotion in general...but watch out when she gets angry.
* GoodIsNotNice: And how. Akira is devoted to finding the truth in any case she works (even more so in the killing game, since anything less will mean the deaths of the spotless students), but she is cold and callous towards the other students and does not put much trust in them.
* HighVoltageDeath: Averted during her execution- she is placed into an electric chair and subjected to several volts of electricity, but it appears the electric chair was not what was supposed to kill her.
* IShallTauntYou: She does this to Hana during the trials, specifically during Chapters 2 and 3.
* IWorkAlone: She adopts this mindset in Chapter 5, most likely as a result of the events of the fourth trial. She gets over it during Chapter 6, however.
* IronLady: She's a no-nonsense prosecutor who will stop at nothing to uncover the truth behind a mystery.
* Irony: In her execution, Akira- the prosecutor- is depicted as being on trial for some unknown offense. To add to the irony, she is found guilty.
* Jerkass: She is cold-hearted towards her classmates, something that isn't lost on the others.
* LackOfEmpathy:
** Unlike characters like Hana or Hiroshi, she has very little sympathy for those who do wrong- and this especially applies to the blackened students.
** Hiroshi actually calls her out on this in Chapter 4, citing her inability/unwillingness to understand her classmates on an emotional level was what prevented her from seeing the truth behind the actions of Hinata, Shiori, and Rumi.
** She appears to overcome this by the end of Chapter 6 and the Epilogue, so in the end it's somewhat averted.
* LadyInAPowerSuit: Akira wears a fancy dark red suit to fit with her attorney image.
* MeaningfulLook: After the voting time in which the students created a five-way tie, she gives Hana a calm look described as having "little to no hostility", likely to indicate the trust she was finally putting in her.
* MegatonPunch: She delivers one that sends Hana to floor following the group's narrow escape from their respective executions.
* MortalityPhobia: Downplayed in that it's not exactly a fear of death that Akira experiences- it's more like she's afraid of dying as a result of failing to uncover the truth behind one of the killing game's murders.
* OnceDoneNeverForgotten: Her nearly getting Asuna convicted for a murder she didn't commit is more or less this, courtesy of Shiori.
* PetTheDog: She attempts to make amends for her treatment of Asuna during the second trial by giving her Kaneki's fedora, then giving her advice regarding how to handle her grief.
* Pride:
** Her main flaw; she can't stand being the one in the wrong, especially when it's the inexperienced and emotional Hana who figures out the truth of the cases.
** This is also shown when she physically cannot say to Asuna that she was wrong about suspecting her of being the killer.
** Somewhat deconstructed in Chapter 5. Her pride as the Ultimate Prosecutor causes Akira to believe her main purpose in life is to find the truth behind crimes such as the ones in the killing game, especially considering failing to do so would mean her death and the deaths of the innocent spotless.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Akira has bright red eyes, and she can be very threatening when she is angered enough.
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: Akira is one of the most intelligent students in the class.
* StoicSpectacles: A gender-flipped example.
* TheGlassesComeOff: During the last portion of her rant to Hana towards the end of the fifth trial, she takes her glasses off and doesn't put them back on until after the voting time.
* TheRival:
** Serves as one towards Hana, especially starting in Chapter 2.
** By the time Chapter 6 rolls around, Akira has gained enough respect for Hana as a result of the events of Chapter 5 that this trope becomes downplayed, and she acts more as a Lancer.
* ThouShaltNotKill: As mean as she can be towards the other students, Akira makes it clear she has no intention of committing a murder, as it would go against her beliefs as a prosecutor.
* TranquilFury: She is clearly not happy when Asuna accuses her of being the traitor in Chapter 5- though her line is relatively quiet, the description of her glare is enough to quiet Asuna very quickly.
* WhatTheHellHero: During the second trial, she is not happy with Shiro when it's revealed he was the one who locked the study's door and prevented Kaneki from being able to escape her killer (even if Shiro was unaware of this until the trial), since she came up with the rule of leaving the study door's lock alone in order to prevent a scenario just like that.
* WhenSheSmiles: The only time she genuinely smiles in the entire story is during the Epilogue; while Hinata and Ryoto are shocked, Asuna comments on what a nice smile it is.

->"I don't know whether to call you brave...or stupid. Because you have brought forth the attention of the one, the only, the Queen of the Dark Arts!"

The famed "Queen of the Dark Arts", an illusionist renowned for her mind-bending performances and tricks. Even offstage, Azami tries to act dark and dramatic like her onstage persona...but in reality, she's nervous and bashful (though friendly enough), simply hoping to make some real friends in the 80th Class.\
She is the culprit of Chapter 1, attacking and killing Mikio in a frenzy of paranoia-induced panic. She is executed by Monokuma, strapped to a chair on a stage in an empty auditorium and shot at with hundreds of shards of broken glass until she bleeds out.
----
* AccidentalMurder: Azami never planned on killing Mikio, only doing so in a blind panic due to fear and paranoia.
* BerserkButton: Don't call her a magician- if you do, she'll be quick to tell you how an illusionist is different.
* BlackCloak: She wears one constantly as shown in her pixel sprite, and she even has spares.
* Bookworm: Her official bio as well as implications in the story show she enjoys reading, spending much of her time in the library.
* Chuunibyou: A subverted example, as she tends to slip in and out of her "Queen of the Dark Arts" persona depending on the situation.
* DarkIsEvil: She tries to come off as this, but it is ultimately averted in that she is actually rather nice.
* DarknessVonGothickname: Her stage name, "Queen of the Dark Arts".
* DeathOfAThousandCuts: Her execution ultimately amounts to this, with her being shot at and torn apart by thousands of glass shards.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: When Hana first meets her, Azami is full into her Queen of the Dark Arts persona, making dramatic statements not unlike a certain canon character...and then she smacks her hand against a doorway by accident, letting out a high-pitched scream of pain before hiding in the library out of embarrassment.
* ExcessiveEvilEyeshadow: Probably to compliment her "dark and mysterious" look.
* FailedASpotCheck: When messing with the crime scene, Azami fails to notice a black smear (from her makeup) left on the murder weapon and a piece of her cloak left in the treadmill. Justified in that she was likely panicked after having committed a murder, and her only concern was turning off the treadmill and barring the door before escaping the scene.
* FatalFlaw: Her paranoia. After Monokuma announces the motive, she spends much of her fearing that she would die as the random student Monokuma selected, or that she would be murdered, or that one of these two scenarios would happen to one of her newfound friends. Monokuma pulling off a fake-out in the dining room the night of the deadline only worsens Azami's mental state, culminating in her attacking Mikio because she was afraid he was about to kill her.
* FriendlessBackground: Heavily implied.
* GothGirlsKnowMagic: About as magic as an illusionist can be. Also downplayed in that, unlike characters such as Gundham or Himiko, Azami doesn't claim or believe her tricks are real magic.
* GratuitousLatin: Azami's first Free Time Event has her demonstrating that she is actually fluent in Latin and tends to use the language during her performances simply because she believes it sounds cool.
* HeelRealization: Azami comes to this conclusion just before she is executed:
->Azami: [tearfully] I...I'm the one who screwed everything up, aren't I...? Because...Because of my damn paranoia, I...
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Heavily implied in her interactions with the other students, particularly Hana and the other girls (minus Akira).
* LargeHam: Just look at the quote above.
* MotiveRant: Goes on a minor one when Hana asks her why she killed Mikio.
* SelfFulfillingProphecy: Azami wanted nothing more than to survive the killing game with her friends...but her desire to do so lead to her not only risking the lives of her classmates with a trial, but it would ultimately lead to her death, which is what she feared all along.
* TearsOfRemorse: Azami cries these just before her execution, crying out how sorry she is for committing the murder.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: By being the first one to become blackened, Azami effectively kickstarted the killing game, which would lead to the deaths of more of her classmates.

->"We may be in a killing game or whatever, but that doesn't mean we can't still be normal!"

A girl with a kind heart and a strong love of the ocean and all it holds. Rumi has helped make great strides in the field of marine biology with her diving skills. Beyond this, she is a very down-to-earth girl who chooses to focus on herself rather than her talent, and is eager to make some friends during her time at Hope's Peak. Not to mention, she's a bit of a hopeless romantic.\
She is the culprit of Chapter 4, killing Shiori by accident after being targeted by her for murder. She is executed by Monokuma by being mauled to death by sea animals.
----
* AccidentalMurder: She had no plans to kill Shiori- however, she forgot about the unstable nature of the railing around the East Wing's second floor. Thus, when she had Shiori pinned against it while trying to talk her down from murder, she was too late to do anything when the railing broke and they both fell, leading to Shiori being fatally impaled on the statue of Themis.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: It's heavily implied she had a crush on Hinata- however, it's subverted in that she liked all the good qualities of who he was rather than his title of Ultimate Thief.
* BirdsOfAFeather: The reason she becomes friends with Hana so quickly is because of their shared love of the ocean, as well as having aquatic-themed talents.
* BreakTheCutie: Throughout Chapter 4's Deadly Life and class trial, it is made clear she was experiencing immense remorse and emotional turmoil as a result of unintentionally murdering Shiori. Not helping her emotional state is the fact that she (initially) planned to win the trial in order to fulfill Shiori's dying wish, which would mean death for just about everyone else.
* CradlingYourKill: She holds up Shiori while the latter is dying from a piece of a glass sword piercing he chest, which was indirectly caused by Rumi herself- it's justified, however, in that Rumi had zero intent to kill Shiori the night of the murder.
* DeathByIrony: Rumi's bio as well as certain parts of the story talk about how much she loves the ocean and the creatures within in- so, naturally, her execution would involve her being brutally killed in the ocean by various types of sea creatures.
* FeminineWomenCanCook: She assists Tadao and/or Saku in cooking during Chapter 1. She seems to have fallen out of doing this, however, most likely due to Tadao's isolation from the group.
* GenkiGirl: Downplayed in that she's still rather down-to-earth compared to some of her peers, but Rumi is still rather energetic and cheerful for the most part.
* GoOutWithASmile: She smiles at her classmates as she says goodbye to them right before she is executed.
* TheHeart: Like Hana, she is one of the more emotional and friendly members of the cast.
* HowDareYouDieOnMe: A rather heartwrenching example, she tearfully says this to Hana in Chapter 3 while the latter is bleeding out from her injuries from the wine room assault.
* IgnoredConfession: In the latter half of the fourth trial, in a last-ditch effort to prevent Hinata from being falsely voted as the killer, Rumi blurts out that she was the one who killed Shiori. However, the other students disregard her confession completely- at first, anyways.
* InnocentBlueEyes: As one of the kindest students, she evokes this image well.
* ItsAllMyFault:
** Appears to harbor some level of guilt regarding the deaths of Saku and Shiro due to her party being what allowed Tadao to give the Despair Drink to so many of the students.
** Downplayed in Chapter 4- while she realizes her murder of Shiori was accidental, she still claims she "killed [her] friend" and needs to face the consequences.
* LastRequest: She makes two; one is directed at Hinata specifically, and she asks him to live on and escape with the other surviving students. The other one, directed at all the students, is that she asks them to at least attempt to forgive Shiori for her actions, as she did try to make things right in the very end and gave Rumi the chance to properly say goodbye to everyone.
* LongHairIsFeminine: Although it's not as long as Akira's hair, her design still invokes this.
* MeaningfulName: Her surname means "beach, seashore" (hama) and "cape, peninsula" (saki)- fitting for someone whose talent revolves around water and the ocean.
* NiceGirl: She's kind and caring towards her friends, as well most of the other students as well.
* NoodleIncident: Her fear of pine trees.
* OceanAwe: She deeply loves the ocean- specifically, the many animals that live in it- and dedicates her time as a scuba diver to helping with researching and preserving it.
* OnlySaneWoman: Rumi serves this role for the female students, as she is the most normal compared to the rest.
* ShipperOnDeck:
** She teases Hana and Hiroshi about how close they are in Chapter 3, clearly seeming to believe the two may have feelings for each other (which they vehemently deny).
** She does it again in Chapter 4 (though Hiroshi isn't around for this one), scolding Hana for not taking the opportunity to investigate the East Wing with Hiroshi, claiming the two will never get together if they keep missing such "bonding opportunities". Hana is not amused.
* SpannerInTheWorks: During Chapter 1, she comes across Azami exiting the library and goes over to talk to her, completely unaware that she had just committed a murder and hid evidence in the library. Rumi, who didn't have her e-Handbook on her, asks her for the time, forcing Azami to have to lie about the time in order to make Rumi think it was earlier than it really was. When this lie is revealed, Azami's credibility quickly crumbles.
* SympatheticMurderer: Probably the strongest example in the whole story. She genuinely had no intention to hurt Shiori, she simply forgot the railing on the second floor of the East Wing was unstable and could break if too much weight was on it, making Rumi the killer via technicality.
* TearsOfRemorse: Cries these quite a few times in the moments preceding her execution.
* ThinksLikeARomanceNovel: Downplayed; it isn't very prominent compared to the rest of her personality, but her bio still lists her as being a hopeless romantic.
* TrueBlueFemininity: Rumi's design has a lot of blue in it, and she's one of the most feminine of all the female students.
* TurnTheOtherCheek: In spite of everything Tadao did in Chapter 3, she nonetheless agrees to put his picture on the memorial of the dead students along with everyone else. Justified in that she points out Tadao was still one of their classmates and that there was a time when he was on somewhat good terms with the class.
* UnwittingPawn: Inverted in Chapter 4- she was the culprit, and Hinata was the "accomplice" trying to hide the evidence that incriminated her. However, Rumi was completely unaware of what Hinata was planning until the middle of the trial.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom:
** The party that she plans and throws in Chapter 3 is what gives Tadao the chance to serve the amnesia-inducing Despair Drink to half the surviving class.
** She also sees herself as this regarding Shiori's murder and the subsequent class trial.
* YouAreNotAlone: It's implied Rumi tried to pull this in her attempt to talk Shiori down from her murder plot (and it's also implied to have worked).

->"My job is my job. I save people when I need to, and that's that. To say I 'love' it is...inaccurate."

Considered the best surgeon in the country, Shiori has never lost a single patient in her time in the operating room. She prides herself on perfection and order in almost everything she does, which often keeps her out of most social situations. She has a prickly and sarcastic exterior in regards to her classmates, but has shown herself to be willing to help out when needed.\
She is the victim of Chapter 4, being unintentionally impaled by a glass statue's sword by Rumi (after she tried to kill Rumi first).
----
* ActuallyAGoodIdea: Even Shiori acknowledges the merit in Ryoto's idea to keep a log of anyone who leaves the party, keeping track of when they leave and return.
* AngerBornOfWorry: Implied, as she becomes angry with Hana after seeing her trying to walk to the dining hall on her wounded leg only a few minutes after waking up.
* ApologeticAttacker: She apologizes to Rumi just before stabbing her with the dagger.
* AssholeVictim: Downplayed; while Shiori was the one who instigated the events of the fourth case by attempting to murder Rumi, she did have a sympathetic motivation to do so and attempted to make things (somewhat) right just before she died from her injuries.
* TheAtoner: Becomes this before her death- after being impaled by the glass statue while Rumi has been knocked out (and is still bleeding from the stab wound Shiori gave her), Shiori decides to use her last ounces of strength to save Rumi's life and give her the chance to escape the killing game.
* BloodFromTheMouth: During the flashback depicting her final moments with Rumi, she is coughing up blood due to being impaled through the chest.
* BlueBlood: Implied. In her first Free Time Event, she tells Hana that her parents are very influential (she specifically mentions her father is the CEO of a prominent hospital where she received employment), to the point where they were able to get Shiori the proper training she needed to become a surgeon despite being a teen.
* BoyishShortHair: She has the shortest hair of all the girls.
* DeadpanSnarker:
** Is prone to this quite often towards any and all of the students, though her most frequent targets tend to be Ryoto and Hinata.
** Chapter 4 seems to justify this a little bit. She remarks in Part 5 how she usually reserves her sarcasm for those who "deserve it", but she also admits she tends to lash out at anyone if she's stressed, regardless if it was warranted or not.
* DontYouDarePityMe: After mistaking the weapon that was used to kill Shiro, playing right into the killer's hands, she refuses to accept when any of the other students try to make her feel better about her error.
* DrJerk: Despite being the Ultimate Surgeon, Shiori is extremely snarky and prickly towards her classmates, only slightly lessening her attitude around those considered her friends.
* EveryoneHasStandards: In Chapter 3, she refuses to follow any more orders from Akira as a result of her overall treatment of the students as well as nearly getting Asuna wrongly convicted in the second trial.
* FreakOut: She has a minor one towards Hana, Asuna, and Rumi towards the conclusion of the girls' second hangout in Chapter 4. Though the exact cause is unknown, it may have been triggered by Shiori being stressed about the murder she was planning.
* GuiltComplex: Downplayed in Chapter 4. After falsely believing the broken crate was the weapon used to murder Shiro in the chapter prior, Shiori becomes incredibly hard on herself- she considers herself to be incompetent, feels that the other students are just as angry at her for her mistake, and feels that her error would have contributed to Tadao successfully framing Saku for the murders. Even when Hana tries to point out the flaws in her reasoning, Shiori refuses to believe it out of her own lost confidence.
* HatesTheJobLovesTheLimelight: Downplayed in that Shiori doesn't seem to enjoy being a surgeon at all- however, she went into the medical field and remains there because it would be a job her parents would approve of.
* HeroicSacrifice: After she and Rumi fall from the second floor of the East Wing, resulting in her being impaled on the Themis statue and Rumi being knocked out, she has the choice to use her skills as a surgeon to try and save herself and salvage her murder plan, leaving Rumi to die. However, out of guilt for what's happened, she does the opposite- she uses her skill and the last of her strength to save Rumi, giving her the chance to graduate and essentially condemning herself to die.
* HiddenDepths: Despite her immense skill at surgery, her Free Time Events reveal the only reason she became a surgeon was to please her parents, whom she constantly seeks the approval of. In her final Free Time Event, she reveals to Hana she would much rather be a simple candlemaker.
* ImADoctorNotAPlaceholder: Due to there being two bodies to investigate, Shiori is asked to help examine one while Hiroshi investigates the other; Shiori, however, has concerns about this arrangement, as she claims doctors do not inherently make good coroners.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: How she is killed; she falls from the second floor of the East Wing onto a glass statue of the Roman goddess Themis, being pierced through the chest by the sword she is holding. Additionally, Hinata tries to deflect suspicion onto himself by making the katana from the eastern lounge look like the murder weapon by sticking it into the wound made by the statue.
* InadequateInheritor: As her influential parents' only child, both them and Shiori do whatever it takes to avert this trope (though the former's methods are...questionable).
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Despite her sharp-tongued exterior, Shiori has shown herself to care more about her friends than she lets on. Examples include:
** During the second trial, Shiori is one of the only students who completely defends Asuna from Akira's accusations.
** In Chapter 3, Shiori begins to despise Akira, partially due to how she treated Asuna during the trial (which could have led to a wrong conviction and the subsequent death of the spotless students had it not been for Hana).
** All of her actions during and after the incident in which Hana was attacked by an unknown suspect (later revealed to have been Tadao) shape her up to be this, from allowing Hana to wear some of her clothes until she's able to go and change into her own clothes to helping the surfer to the dining room after seeing her having trouble walking with her injured leg.
** In her fourth Free Time Event, Shiori (falsely believing Hana's parents were the type who wouldn't be happy if she lost a surfing competition) gives Hana some advice on how to best avoid loss or mistakes during times of stress. Although she was mistaken in her impression of Hana's parents, it was clear she was being genuine when advising her classmate.
** Hana's inner thoughts regarding Shiori towards the end of Chapter 4's trial sum this up best:
-->Shiori...she always was kind of cold and standoffish to everyone, but...thinking back on all the things she did for us, I know Rumi's right. Despite how she grew up, how she acted around everyone, even what she tried to do to Rumi- I know Shiori wasn't a bad person at heart.
* LabcoatOfScienceAndMedicine: She wears a clean white one to compliment her doctor image.
* LastRequest: She asks Rumi to at least try and survive the upcoming class trial, as Shiori feels Rumi doesn't deserve to die for something she instigated.
* TheMedic: Her job as the Ultimate Surgeon.
* MustHaveCaffeine: The day after the first trial, Shiori is seen in the dining room having drank eight cups of coffee in order to wake up.
* NoSocialSkills: Her bio implies she isn't in many social situations due to her work as a prodigy surgeon and her perfectionist tendencies when it comes to said job.
* NotQuiteDead: Despite being impaled through the lung with a glass sword, Shiori manages to survive long enough to patch up an unconscious and heavily bleeding Rumi.
* NotSoAboveItAll: As much as she tries to remain serious throughout the story, there are times when even she finds herself caught up in the antics of the others.
* ThePerfectionist:
** She is often descried as "striving for perfection" in everything she does, both during the plot and in her Free Time Events. Possibly due to this, she doesn't take failure to live up to this well (see Guilt Complex above).
** Her final Free Time Event seems to deconstruct this when it implies Shiori's perfectionism stems from her constantly having to work hard to earn the approval of her parents, who do not take kindly to her making any sort of mistakes.
* SourOutsideSadInside: As bitter and aloof as she can be towards her classmates, deep down she is just a girl under a lot of stress who just wants her parents to love her (see "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl below).
* StepfordSnarker: Implied to be the case in Chapter 4. She has a difficult time interacting with others, most likely due to her upbringing, and as a result she often ends up lashing out verbally at her classmates- even worse if she's stressed, in which case she'll snark anyone regardless of if they "deserve" it or not.
* SympatheticMurderer: Although she never actually succeeded in killing her intended victim, Shiori's motivation to commit the act (i.e. trying to avoid disappointing her perfectionist parents) coupled with the implication that she was extremely hesitant to go through with the crime paint her in a sympathetic light.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: She gives one to Akira at the start of Chapter 3, calling her out for her cold treatment of the other students despite being their supposed leader.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: She sees her act of trying to murder Rumi as this.
* Tsundere: Some of her mannerisms make her come off as this, most notably her repeated insistence that she doesn't care for her classmates as friends and making excuses as to why she does nicer things for them.
* WellDoneDaughterGirl: Her main motivation for most of her actions, from becoming a surgeon to planning to shift into neurosurgery, is for the purpose of earning the approval of her strict and high-class parents.
* YourApprovalFillsMeWithShame: Monokuma compliments her medical skills upon seeing that Hana is alive after the incident in the wine room. Shiori doesn't take too kindly to it.

->"M-My name is...Asuna Izumi. I-I'm the Ultimate Gardener, so I know a lot about flowers and plants and such...s-so if you ever have questions about those, d-don't be afraid to ask!"

A renowned gardening expert, Asuna knows all there is to know about proper flower and plant care, what types of soil work best, proper times to plant a certain type of flower, as well as various botany topics as well. However, she is painfully shy and timid; though she does seem to have a hidden inner strength, which may be brought out with the influence of her friends.\

In Chapter 2, she is initially targeted by Itachi for murder, only to be made into a scapegoat when he ends up killing Kaneki instead of her. Then, in Chapter 5, she goes along with Hana's plan to create a five-way tie in the voting and thus force the trial into a draw as a result of the trial being rigged. However, Monokuma still forces her and her classmates into a mass execution, but they are all saved by a castle-wide blackout. Asuna goes on to survive the final trial and escape the underground bunker alongside the other surviving students.
----
* AgonyOfTheFeet: Is on the receiving end of this in Chapter 4 when Rumi, stuck in a not-so-mobile suit of armor, falls over and lands right on both of Asuna's feet.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Several of her Free Time Events include her making mention of being bullied or marginalized by her peers due to her appearance, mannerisms, etc.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: The reason she became so attached to Kaneki was because of the latter's unwavering care, protectiveness, and guidance towards her- something Asuna never had in a friend growing up, but that Kaneki was more than willing to provide.
* BerserkButton: A very downplayed example, but she is shown to be subtly irritated when Ryoto says common idioms wrong towards the end of Part 2 of Chapter 4, correcting him every time he does.
* BigNo: She shouts one of these right before the mass execution in Chapter 5.
* BreakTheCutie: Chapter 2, full stop.
** HealTheCutie: In spite of what happened in Chapter 2, Hana's efforts in Chapter 3 bring her out of her despair-induced state, and she is mostly back to her old self by the time Rumi's party starts.
* BrokenTears: She cries these when Hana helps her confront her real feelings regarding Kaneki's death.
* CaringGardener: Comes with her talent.
* CooldownHug: Is on the receiving end of this courtesy of Hana after confronting her guilt regarding the events of Chapter 2.
* TheDeterminator: The end of Chapter 3 implies she's become this, as she makes it clear to Hana that she intends to escape the castle with the rest of their classmates in order to ensure Kaneki's death wasn't for nothing.
* DisappearedDad: Asuna states in her first Free Time Event that she's never met her father.
* FrameUp: She is nearly framed for Kaneki's murder in Chapter 2 by the real killer.
* FriendlessBackground: She claims she hasn't had any real friends throughout her life, due to her shyness.
* GrewASpine:
** Downplayed in the third class trial, as she still seems to have some nervousness about her as well her usual nervous stuttering. However, during that same trial, she has to make herself heard by her classmates in order to present evidence that she believes could point out the killer's identity- not only does she succeed, but she does so in a rather vocal manner reminiscent of how she spoke during her Sanity Slippage.
** During Chapter 4's trial, she plays a pretty active role throughout and has an easier time making herself heard- for the most part. Even so, after Hinata consistently snaps at her to 'shut up' a few times, she snaps back him (in a manner similar to her shouting from the third trial) with little hesitation.
* HeroicBastard: When briefly speaking about her absent father again in her fourth Free Time Event, she mentions how even her mother doesn't know much about the man before explaining how the two of them "met each other by chance" and "one thing led to another". This, combined with Hana's apologetic reaction (which could be attributed to Japan's attitude towards illegitimate children), implies Asuna was born out of wedlock.
* InnocentFlowerGirl: She is kind and sensitive, and she is the Ultimate Gardener.
* ItsAllMyFault: Feels this way about Kaneki's murder, believing that if she had been stronger, Itachi wouldn't have targeted her and as a result Kaneki wouldn't have died trying to stop him.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: The end of Chapter 2 reveals she may have been this for her friend Kaneki, when Asuna herself believed it was the other way around.
* MadnessMakeover: When she is first seen again in Chapter 3, Asuna's broken emotional state is emphasized with her altered appearance; her hair is disheveled, she has ditched her glasses, her uniform isn't done properly, and her eyes are described as being dark from sleep deprivation as well as being described as "intense" or "vicious".
* MeeknessIsWeakness: She seems to believe this, anyways, and initially fears that someone may try and kill her due to this (a fear that comes true in Chapter 2).
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: When she learns about Hana being attacked and nearly killed in the wine room, she is horrified at herself for what she had said to Hana in her rage-fueled state, fearing that that would be the last time they would ever talk.
* NervousWreck: Her fearful and anxious mannerisms throughout the story make her come off as this, at least until some Character Development kicks in.
* NoSocialSkills: She claims to not be good in social situations; this is evident in her first Free Time Event, when she finds it hard to talk to Hana despite the latter's best efforts.
* OffWithHerHead: It appears her execution would have ended this way if not for the blackout, with the giant plant monster at the end biting her head off.
* ProperlyParanoid: In Chapter 2, Asuna becomes afraid that someone will try to kill her after Tadao points out what an "easy target" she'd be (due to being the smallest and meekest student in the class). This turns out to be the exact reason Itachi targeted her for a murder- he needed a target, and she would be the easiest one to kill.
* SailorFuku: She wears a normal white, blue, and red one.
* SanitySlippage: She undergoes one in Chapter 3 as a result of the grief and trauma she experienced in the chapter prior. She gets better, though.
* SkewedPriorities: After the class escapes their respective executions, the first thing Asuna does (after crying into Ryoto's leg) is look for her (or rather, Kaneki's) fedora, as it flew off her head when she was dragged away.
* SuddenlyShouting: Does this as a result of the Sanity Slippage she undergoes in Chapter 3.
** Even after she recovers from her mental break, she still sometimes shouts out loud to make herself heard for one reason or another.
* TookALevelInJerkass: In Chapter 3, she has a complete change in her usually shy but kind personality, now becoming much more hostile and standoffish towards her classmates (even the ones she considers her friends). Chapter 3 Part 4 reveals this is all an act, and that she is simply acting this way in a misguided attempt to follow Akira's advice.
* TragicKeepsake: She is given Kaneki's fedora by Akira at the end of the second trial.
** She starts wearing it herself as of Chapter 3, Part 5, most likely to honor her friend's memory.
* TraumaCongaLine: Chapter 2 puts her through the wringer, to put it lightly. When it seems like things are improving for her, especially since she found a best friend in Kaneki, things take a turn for the worse. To summarize:
** Kaneki, her closest friend and sister figure, is brutally murdered.
*** Not to mention she is the first one to find her body.
** She is considered the prime suspect due to her own poor decision making/untruthfulness and the killer's attempts to frame her.
** She is nearly convicted for the murder, just barely being saved due to Hana's stubbornness.
** She finds out Kaneki was not the killer's intended target- she was, and Kaneki essentially died because she was trying to protect her.
** The killer, Itachi, reveals the only reason he targeted Asuna was because she was the easiest target as the smallest and weakest student.
** This basically brings to fruition Asuna's worst fears regarding the killing game- that someone would try to kill her due to how weak she is.
** Finally, Monokuma reveals Kaneki was living with a terrible amount of sadness and grief resulting from a tragic incident from her past, something Asuna was completely unaware of despite being her closest friend.
* VerbalTic: She stutters quite often, likely due to nervousness. As the story progresses, however, it shows up less and less.

->"We're supposed to be able to go anywhere, but most of the castle is blocked off! And exploring is my thing! It's like they're taunting me!"

A seemingly fearless and daring adventurer, Kaneki has traveled to places where most other explorers wouldn't dare to go. Her travels have helped make great strides in fields such as archaeology, geology, and anthropology. Finding it hard to stay in one place too long, she is extremely eager to explore every nook and cranny of Hope's Peak to discover what secrets they hold...even if she comes off as a little crazy to her peers.\
In Chapter 2, she discovers and attempts to prevent a murder plot against Asuna, only to be murdered by Itachi via a slashed throat in her place.
----
* ActionGirl: Of all the female students, she probably fits this trope the most.
* AdventurerArchaeologist: She is the Ultimate Explorer and has helped make advances in archaeology according to her official bio.
* AfraidOfBlood: Kaneki has been shown to have a terrible fear of blood on several occasions.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: Kaneki is the only student with dark, tanned skin; possibly justified due to all the traveling she does as the Ultimate Explorer.
* AngerBornOfWorry: A flashback depicting the final conversation between Asuna and Kaneki has this; it comes in the form of Kaneki becoming furious with Asuna because she mistakenly thought Asuna was going to the storage room to meet with whoever sent her the strange letter, despite Kaneki specifically telling her not to. She immediately regrets her harshness, however, and quickly apologizes.
* BigSisterInstinct: Kaneki will do whatever it takes to protect Asuna, despite the two of them being the same age and not actually related. She's even willing to risk dying in order to stop a classmate from murdering her. The end of Chapter 2 reveals Kaneki is a deconstruction of this trope. Growing up, Kaneki believed the biggest job of an elder sibling was looking after and protecting their younger ones. When she ended up failing at that job, resulting in the death of her little sister Yuna, she was devastated, and Kaneki never forgave herself for the incident. Eventually, when she met Asuna during the killing game, she decided that she would not allow Yuna's fate to befall the girl, no matter the cost. This would lead to Kaneki recklessly trying to prevent a murder plot against Asuna by herself, for she believed stopping it alone was the only surefire way to successfully protect her, and this recklessness is what would ultimately lead to her own death.
* BraidsOfAction: Her hair is usually tied into a single, long braid draped over her shoulder.
* Cloudcuckoolander: Kaneki insists on exploring the castle as much as she can, believing there are hidden rooms and passages inside. She even insists that the library has a hidden room behind one of the bookshelves (see Genre Savvy below), and tears the shelves apart accordingly.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: At the climax of the first trial, Hana reveals the existence of the hidden room in the library that Azami had shown her, and where she had hidden the bloody cloak. Kaneki's response:
->Kaneki: Wait, so...you mean to tell me there is a secret room inside the library!? And I completely missed it!?
->Shiori: Not the point, Kaneki.
* CoolBigSis: Kaneki tries to act as one for Asuna. According to Monokuma's story, she was also this towards her actual younger sister, Yuna.
* TheCuckoolanderWasRight: As it turns out, there actually is a secret room inside the library...although not behind any bookshelves. And then Chapter 6 reveals there really is a completely separate hidden passage in the library, which is behind one of the bookshelves, meaning she was legitimately right after all.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: When Kaneki was eleven years old, she took her younger sister Yuna (age seven) out to explore the woods near their home, even though their parents warned against it due to bad weather. Sure enough, the two girls ended up caught in a rainstorm while out; to make matters worse, Kaneki recklessly runs ahead of her sister, and Yuna is on the verge on losing her footing and falling down a long dropoff. When Kaneki realized this and tried to save her, a lightning strike frightened her and caused her freeze up, and as a result she was too late to stop Yuna from falling to her death. The result on Kaneki? Well, just take a look at the rest of the page.
* DeclarationOfProtection: She makes it clear to Asuna that she will do whatever she can to ensure she survives the killing game with the rest of their classmates- a promise that she makes (tragically) good on.
* DiesWideOpen: How she is found by Asuna, then Ryoto and Hana.
* DirtyCoward: How she sees herself, anyways.
* DyingClue: Before she is killed, Kaneki fights back against her killer with her whip. This resulted in the killer not only having a wound from the attack, but their blood would also be left on the whip. Despite the culprit's attempts at destroying the evidence, the whip remained intact, allowing Hana to use it to definitively connect them to the murder.
* Expy: Travels around as an Adventurer Archaeologist, wields a bullwhip, wears a fedora...Indiana Jones, is that you?
* FedoraOfAsskicking: Kaneki is rarely seen without her fedora, to the point where it's even considered her signature item.
* GenderBlenderName: "Kaneki" is actually a more masculine name in Japan than feminine.
* GenreSavvy: She tells Hana in Chapter 1 that libraries in old castles always have rooms hidden behind bookshelves, which is why she is searching the library to find such a room (much to Shiori's annoyance).
* HeroicSacrifice: Kaneki pulls this (possibly unintentionally) in her attempt to prevent a murder plot against Asuna. She convinces Asuna not to go to the meeting place on the fake note and confronts the killer in her place, succeeding in saving her but ending up murdered herself.
* HisStoryRepeatsItself: When she was younger, Kaneki failed to save her younger sister from a situation that Kaneki herself indirectly caused. Several years later, she finds out her closest friend/younger sister figure Asuna is most likely being targeted for a murder- this time, Kaneki resolves to do whatever it takes to ensure her sister's fate doesn't befall Asuna.
* HugeSchoolgirl: She is the tallest of all the female students, with her height being described as 6'0".
* ILetGwenStacyDie: Kaneki holds herself responsible for Yuna's death, believing it was her actions that led to Yuna being killed in the first place, despite the incident being an accident at its core.
** MyGreatestSecondChance: However, several years later, she meets and befriends Asuna, and she ultimately decides to become a surrogate big sister to her in an attempt to atone for failing Yuna.
* InTheBack: She is stabbed in the back with a hunting knife (five times, no less), but these wounds aren't what killed her.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: When Kaneki starts being quieter and more anxious the day before her murder, many of the other students immediately realize something must be wrong.
* OhCrap: Kaneki has this reaction when Itachi pulls out one of his knives on her.
* PluckyComicRelief: She serves as this for the female students with her kind yet eccentric personality.
* ShooOutTheClowns: Come Chapter 2, however, and she spends the rest of her time in-story in a rather OOCIsSeriousBusiness out of character state- and then she gets murdered in a gruesome fashion. And then Monokuma reveals her past following the second voting time (see Dark and Troubled Past above), shedding a new light on her eccentrics.
* SlashedThroat: How she is ultimately killed.
* SpannerInTheWorks: Whether she meant to or not, Kaneki was one of the biggest reasons Itachi's murder plan went off the rails like it did. Itachi wasn't even planning to kill her, it was Asuna he was gunning for. This resulted in Itachi having to switch his plan and make Asuna a scapegoat, forcing him to forge new evidence and stage the crime scene to do so, which resulted in evidence that could later be used against him.
** Not only that, but Kaneki attacked and wounded Itachi in self-defense with her whip, leaving blood on the wepon as a result. The whip would later become the final piece of evidence that would prove Itachi's guilt.
* StepfordSmiler: A Type 1- though she appears cheerful and somewhat eccentric on the outside, deep down she is still grieving and guilt-ridden in regards to her sister's death.
* WeaponSpecialization: She carries a bullwhip around at almost all times. She threatens to use it against Monokuma in the prologue, and she actually uses it against Ryoto and later Itachi in Chapter 2.
* YouthfulFreckles: Is described as having these across the bridge of her nose.

->"Yeah, that's cool, but- look, don't treat me as some kind of celebrity, okay? I'm a normal teenager and student, just like you, Ultimate status notwithstanding. Let's just leave it as that, okay?"

A rising star in the indie game market, Mikio has utilized his skills in programming and storytelling to craft critically acclaimed titles that are loved by both Japanese and western audiences. However, he doesn't want to be seen as someone famous- he simply wants to make friends and make through the next three years at Hope's Peak like most other teens. He is the first student Hana meets, and she (a big fan of his games) holds him in high regards despite his wishes at first, although it does mellow out as time passes.\
He is the first victim of the killing game, being bludgeoned to death by a paranoid and panicked Azami.
----
* BigEater: Mikio loves food, with his main concern throughout the first parts of the prologue being when the students will get to eat something.
* BlindWithoutEm: As shown in the prologue, Mikio is unable to see properly without his glasses.
** This becomes important during the first case- when Hana has to explain why Mikio would have stepped onto a moving treadmill, she realizes it was because his glasses were broken in the attack, resulting in him becoming practically blind.
* GenericGuy: His design invokes this, most likely to emphasize his role as the most normal and grounded of all the students.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Heavily implied in how he insists, mainly to Hana, on not being treated as some celebrity game developer.
* KingOfGames: Not of playing them, though- making them.
* MamasBoy: Implied, as his first concern when being told the students are cut off from the outside world is that he promised his mother he would call her after his first day of classes, and that she's likely waiting for him now.
* NerdGlasses: He wears a pair of black glasses, and is a game designer.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: It's implied he was trying to calm down a clearly panicked Azami when the two of them were in the fitness room- unfortunately, Azami took it was him getting ready to murder her, and attacked/killed him as a result.
* OnlySaneMan: Mikio is the most normal of all the male students- in fact, one could argue he is the most normal of the entire cast.
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent: He wishes to be seen as this, despite his Ultimate talent.
* SacrificialLamb: He is the first victim after becoming Hana's first friend in the killing game.
* TapOnTheHead: A lethal example, he is bludgeoned multiple times with a dumbbell courtesy of Azami.
* TreadmillTrauma: After his glasses are broken at the start of Azami's attack on him, he accidentally steps upon a still-running treadmill nearby and trips, injuring his ankle and allowing Azami to finish him off.
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: He is a nice guy, one of the most normal of all the other students, and is the first student Hana meets and befriends while in the castle...and he goes on to become the first murder victim in the killing game.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: He is the first death in the killing game, and as such he receives little attention when compared to the rest of the characters.

!!!Ultimate Coroner

->"The dead never lie."

Hiroshi is a young man with an odd talent to many, but his passion for forensics shines through his ability to figure out any kind of information by working with a corpse- truly, there are no secrets the dead can keep from him. However, his mannerisms can be considered creepy to many, but he truly does have a good heart and sees the best in his classmates. He has shown himself to be one of the most competent when it comes to murder investigations, and he has also become one of Hana's closest allies throughout the story.\

He is later revealed to be one of two "traitors" in the killing game- that is, one of two students who still have their memory completely intact, with the other being Nanako Tokumei. He and Nanako attempted to prevent the killing game by erasing the memory of the original mastermind, Agent 44/Hana, only for Dark Hand to force Nanako into being a replacement mastermind and leaving Hiroshi to try and fight the killing game from the inside. In Chapter 5, he tries to reveal the truth to Hana, leading Nanako to murder him by practically torturing him and then finishing him off by electrocuting him with a broken, live cable from the North Wing's power room.
----
* AllLovingHero: He doesn't appear to hold much ill towards any of the other members of the 80th Class, even some of the more antagonistic members. Even if someone does something more adverse, he forgives them relatively quickly (even the blackened students).
** This is especially demonstrated when Tadao is outed as the killer of Saku and Shiro, as Hiroshi is the only student who doesn't react with total animosity towards him, instead showing a level of pity for the waiter.
** Even more clear come the reveal that Hiroshi knew all along that Hana was a devoted member of Dark Hand, but was so certain that there was still good in her that he opted to erase her memories to prevent the killing game rather than kill her. After that, he acts as Hana's closest friend throughout the killing game despite still knowing the truth.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: His Free Time Events imply he was ostracized by his peers due to him spending time around cadavers.
* ClothingConcealedInjury: His shirt was hiding the electrical burns all over his torso, which were omitted from the case's Monokuma File.
* ConditionedToAcceptHorror: He doesn't react with as much horror towards dead bodies as the other students due to working with corpses on a regular basis.
* TheConfidant: He serves as one of Hana's closest friends throughout the killing game.
* TheCoroner: The Ultimate one, no less.
* CreepyGood: His overall demeanor and his position as a coroner make him rather off-putting at first, but at the end of the day there's no doubting his good intentions.
* CreepyMortician: Subverted; his calm and knowing smile combined with his unfazed attitude towards most things makes him come off as eerie at first, but in reality he genuinely means well.
* DeadGuyOnDisplay: His body is hung from the ceiling of the North Wing's dungeon with a rope, being very visible to anyone who walked into the room and likely an act of taunting by the killer. It's downplayed, however, in that the dungeon is somewhat out of the way compared to some of the bigger and more frequently visited rooms in the castle.
* Deuteragonist: Next to Hana, he appears to be one of the most prominent character in the story.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: In an attempt to prevent the mastermind from discovering his plan to reveal the truth to Hana, he covers the camera in his bedroom with his bedsheet to prevent the mastermind from seeing what he's doing. Unfortunately, this has the opposite effect as well- since the camera in his room becomes inexplicably blacked out, it attracts the mastermind's attention to him.
* DiesWideOpen: His eyes are open when his body is initially discovered.
* DueToTheDead: At the start of the second investigation, he closes Kaneki's eyes and mouth, telling Hana that "even in death, a person deserves some dignity".
** He himself ends up on the receiving end of this when he is murdered in Chapter 5, also being found with his eyes open before Hana manually closes them.
* FriendlessBackground: Implied in his Free Time Events, as he mentions people being weirded out by him due to his work.
* HatesBeingTouched:
** As much as he can handle dead bodies, he's not a fan of physical contact with living people. This becomes a point in his second Free Time Event, where Hana pats him on the shoulder and he becomes extremely uncomfortable. However, he seems to be trying to overcome this, as in his final Free Time Event he is the one who puts a hand on Hana's shoulder.
** Outside of Free Time Events, Hiroshi actually puts a hand on Hana's arm at the start of Chapter 2- he was likely trying to put his negative feelings about physical contact aside for the sake of comforting her.
* HiddenDepths: Although he puts on a levelheaded and intelligent face a majority of the time, his last Free Time Event shows he worries quite a bit about how the killing game is progressing and what will become of the other students. It's also revealed that, as the traitor and the one participant who still had all his memories intact, he essentially had to watch all of his friends not remember one another and then die over and over again; his video on his laptop depicts how grief-stricken and guilty he feels about not coming clean sooner, and thus he feels partially responsible for the deaths that occurred.
* HighVoltageDeath: Despite all the other injuries he received, his final cause of death was electrocution with a live electrical cable.
* HyperAwareness: He is able to figure out small details on the victims' bodies and as such can make several deductions based on those clues alone.
* IShouldHaveDoneThisYearsAgo: He tells Hana before walking away at the end of Chapter 5 Part 3 that he needs to do something he "should have done sooner", referring to telling her the truth about the killing game and, presumably, her identity as Agent 44.
* IWillWaitForYou: An inverted (and platonic) example- at the end of Part 3 of Chapter 5, he tells Hana to wait for him, as he has something important to say to her and will inform her when he's ready to tell her. Too bad he gets murdered before he gets the chance.
* ImADoctorNotAPlaceholder: After finding Hana half-dead after the incident in the wine room, Hiroshi tells Rumi that he can't help her because he, as a coroner, works with dead people, not living ones.
* LetsGetDangerous: When the first murder happens, Hiroshi wastes no time taking initiative and putting his talent to use for the sake of discovering the truth.
* MellowFellow: When he's not being quiet and observatory towards his peers, he's generally one of the calmest students in the cast no matter what Monokuma and the killing game throws at everyone.
* NervesOfSteel: Most of the time, he reacts to most of the strange things happening in the castle with calmness- Hana frequently wonders if anything fazes him.
* NotSoStoic: As calm as Hiroshi generally is, there are times when he shows more emotion than usual- usually in response to a murder or an execution.
** This is especially played straight when Hana is critically injured by an unknown assailant, when he is almost as panicked as Rumi.
** Shown again in Chapter 4 when he is visibly angered at Akira's behavior towards the latest incident, even calling her out for her disregard of anyone else's feelings and emotions.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: After the mass argument about who the traitor could be in Chapter 5, the group (sans Akira) knows they've screwed up big time when Hiroshi snaps at everyone for their bickering.
* PunishedForSympathy: Downplayed; he seems to have forgiven Tadao, at least to an extent, for the events of Chapter 3 and agrees with Rumi's decision to have Tadao's picture on the memorial with everyone else. This results in Shiori calling him out on his incredibly forgiving nature.
-->Shiori: Well, you're as forgiving as they come- someone could hit you with a truck and you'd probably be cool with it.
* TheQuietOne: While he does engage in friendly conversation when prompted, especially with Hana, most of the time he tends to simply step back and observe events as they happen.
** BewareTheQuietOnes: Hiroshi can get pretty sharp-tongued when he needs to be- mostly towards Monokuma, but occasionally towards another student.
* RasputinianDeath: He was bound by his wrists in tape, slashed in the ankles, mutilated in the hands and wrists, badly bludgeoned in the head, and then finally electrocuted to death. And that's not even getting into what the killer did with Hiroshi's corpse after...
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Give a small yet scathing one to Akira after Rumi's execution, calling her out on how her lack of understanding her classmates emotionally was what caused her to not understand the case- essentially, he told her it was nobody's fault but her own.
* TheReliableOne: When Hana is in doubt during the trial, it's often Hiroshi who points her in the right direction, albeit vaguely.
* StealthMentor: He assists Hana during both investigations and trials, while never explicitly elaborating on an important point until after she has come to the basic conclusion herself.
* TapOnTheHead: One of the injuries he received was being violently bludgeoned in the head.
* TryingNotToCry: Does this mainly after an execution.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: He convinces Hana not to tell anyone about the catacomb entrance in the West Wing for the time being, which Hana complies with. This ends up causing major problems for Hana during the fifth trial, when her knowledge of the secret entrance makes her the prime suspect in Hiroshi's murder.
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Hiroshi's pep talk to Hana at the start of Chapter 1's Deadly Life amounts to this.
** The final message on the video he left for Hana in Chapter 6 amounts to this as well.

->"As I said, we are not above giving into Monokuma's temptations. And, once again, you are all my competition. And this game...well, let's just say I have no intention of losing."

Tadao Shimaru, despite his wealthy background, has put himself to work as a waiter for a number of luxurious restaurants all over Japan. He puts his efforts into his work, and as a result his skills are unmatched by other workers. He is highly ambitious and will look down on those wasting his time; it is even to the point where he has cut himself off from the rest of the group, making it clear is perfectly willing to commit murder if it means fulfilling his own ends.\
He is the culprit of Chapter 3, killing Saku and then murdering Shiro when he accidentally witnesses it. He is executed by being put through the preparation of an oversized chicken dish on a cooking show, ultimately ending with him being burned alive in a giant oven.
----
* AmbitionIsEvil: His entire motivation was that he wanted live his ambition of opening a restaurant that would go on to become the most popular in the country- so he nearly killed the main character and directly murdered two people after that.
* AristocratsAreEvil: He is stated to come from a wealthy family, and he openly admits to wanting to commit a murder so he can escape. (A threat he makes good on in Chapter 3).
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: Just before his execution, he asks his classmates if any of them can say, with absolute certainty, that there is another way to escape the castle without committing murder. Literally no one can answer him.
* AtLeastIAdmitIt: Tadao acknowledges that his motivation to commit murder was selfish, but then goes on to describe how the motivations of Azami and Itachi were just as selfish- he's just the only one who admits it.
* BlueBlood: Tadao is from a rich family, though the details are currently unknown.
* BondVillainStupidity:
** When he stabs and knocks out Hana (i.e. the person who was instrumental in solving the previous two murders) in the wine room, instead of killing her right then and there, thereby getting rid of one his biggest threats, he simply finishes hiding the kitchen knife and flees the scene. This, ultimately, turns out about as well for him as you would expect.
** Tadao himself lampshades this after he has been found guilty, lamenting how, yes, he should have just killed her when he had the chance.
* BrutalHonesty: He holds back noting verbally in the time leading up to his death, claiming that, since he is about to die, he doesn't care who he offends with his words.
* ConfessToALesserCrime: He admits to being the one who attacked Hana in the wine room the day before the murders in an attempt to draw suspicion away from him. Not only does this not work, but it has the opposite effect later on (see HoistByHisOwnPetard below).
* CrazyPrepared: He planned a murder days beforehand by obtaining the motive on the first day, exploring the West Wing intently, hiding a potential murder weapon in of the West Wing's rooms, and testing out the Despair Drink on one of his classmates to figure out its effects.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: He is put through the preparation process of a chicken and vegetable dish (courtesy of a giant Monokuma chef and giant ingredients) on a cooking show, which includes: being nearly cut up, crushed by a meat mallet, and suffocated in a plastic bag. In the end, what actually kills him is being burned alive in the oven that is cooking the chicken.
* TheCynic: Even before the first trial, Tadao is doubtful about how well his classmates will hold up in the killing game, especially when the first motive is announced.
** He is also incredibly doubtful about there being an alternate way to escape the castle without utilizing the Graduation Clause.
* CynicismCatalyst: At first, as uncertain as Tadao was about the killing game, he still worked with the group as much as everyone else did. But then, a murder and an execution occur, forcing Tadao to realize both the true nature of the killing game and that the students aren't as above Monokuma's temptations as they want to believe.
* DeathByIrony: Averted throughout much of his execution (likely on purpose)- cut up by a kitchen knife like the one he used on Hana and Saku, bludgeoned to death by a meat mallet like Shiro was bludgeoned with the statuette, and suffocated in a plastic bag like he strangled Saku. The aversion comes when none of these are actually what killed him, though coming close to doing so.
* DidNotThinkThisThrough: He openly mocks and berates Ryoto at one point, claiming that he would never be able to stop him from committing a murder. He's likely doing this just because he can, but it results in Ryoto becoming so riled that he tries to punch Tadao.
* DidntSeeThatComing: For all the preparations he made prior to murdering Saku, the one thing he didn't count on was someone walking in on him finishing off his victim.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: He detests Monokuma like the rest of the students, and he is also just as disturbed by the first execution as the others.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: Every time someone brings up friendship or teamwork in his presence, he is quick to refute such words.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: He tells Monokuma this is how he intends to die, and attempts to make good on this as he is being executed. In the end, however, it is averted when he realizes he is about to be cooked/burned alive.
* FaceHeelTurn: Though he was still one of the more cynical students, Tadao was still willing to work with and cooperate with the group. Then, the first murder happens, followed by a trial and execution, and he decides to mostly cut himself off from the group and makes it clear he'll kill if it means escape.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He acts and speaks in an eloquent manner, but he is still arrogant and standoffish towards his peers. Also, he's gained quite a bit of murderous intent upon realizing how dangerous the killing game really is.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: When Hana manages to connect the murder of Saku and her own attack in the wine room via the red wine bottles, Tadao ultimately confesses beyond any doubt that he was the one who attacked her; he does this to try and deflect suspicion towards him, as he claims the fact that the same type of weapon was used was just a coincidence. But then Hana makes a second connection between the two incidents, one that cannot be a coincidence, and Tadao is unable to defend himself due to his earlier confession.
* LackOfEmpathy: He is the biggest offender of this alongside Akira, showing little regard for his classmates, alive or dead.
* IKnowKarate: He apparently knows enough self-defense to be able to guard a crime scene.
* Jerkass: Just take a good look at the rest of this page.
* JerkassHasAPoint: As mean as he can be, Tadao does point out how not all of the students will likely resist the temptation from Monokuma's motives. Sure enough, Azami and Itachi both kill as a result of Monkuma's respective motives.
* KillItWithFire: His execution ultimately ends with him being skeletonized in a giant oven with a dish of chicken- an oven with an interior that ultimately ignites into flames due to the sheer heat.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: When Kaneki whips Ryoto because he would have ended up punching Asuna (who was trying to break up Ryoto and Tadao) by mistake, he tries to add on to his insults from before...but one Death Glare from Kaneki tells him that he should leave very quickly.
* LeaveNoWitnesses: The reason he kills Shiro is because he walked in on him having just killed Saku, and Tadao realized using the Despair Drink would mean nothing if a literal witness had seen him commit the murder.
* LetMeGetThisStraight:
-->Tadao: You're honestly saying that I knocked out Yamamoto, strangled him, chased Koichi, killed him, took the knife and slit Yamamoto's stomach, climbed up the watchtower, pushed the crate down the stairs, took the debris into the wine room, and returned to the banquet room before the Despair Drink even wore off!? In the span of less than ten minutes!? What kind of divine intervention do you think was assisting me!?
* MadnessMantra:
-->"Impossible, impossible, impossible, impossible!"
* NonIdleRich: He comes from a wealthy family, yet he holds the title of Ultimate Waiter.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Though Tadao has made it clear starting in Chapter 2 that he wanted to kill someone and escape, he had never really done anything to make good on those threats besides talk. Then Chapter 3 rolls around, and he kills not one but two students.
* SarcasticConfession: While he and Ryoto are guarding the halls to the two crime scenes, the two of them start to bicker yet again as Ryoto is openly suspecting him of being the killer. Tadao decides to mock him by sarcastically admitting that, yes, he was the one who murdered Shiro and Saku, the champion athlete; the best part? Ryoto takes him seriously.
* SharpDressedMan: WaistcoatOfStyle, dress pants, fancy shoes, and clean white gloves.
* SmugSnake: He is as arrogant as he is a jerk.
* StrippedToTheBone: How he ends up by the end of his execution.
* SympatheticMurderer: Averted, unlike the previous killers. Tadao orchestrated the deaths of two people simply because he wanted to open a restaurant that would become the most famous in the country- the others are very verbal in their disgust towards such a selfish motivation.
* TeamChef: Likely due to the amount of time he spends in restaurants, he is able to make quality food for his classmates.
* ThisIsACompetition: Adopts this mindset as of Chapter 2.
* TokenEvilTeammate:
** He is the most sinister of all the students, openly claiming he'll kill any or all the students in order to escape the castle.
** Even his motivation to commit murder reflects this- he wanted to open a famous restaurant, a motive that is much more selfish than the previous killers'.
* TookALevelInJerkass: At the beginning of the story, Tadao was slightly cynical and arrogant, but was willing to cooperate all the same. Starting in Chapter 2, however, he realizes just how real the killing game is and makes it clear he intends to win, even if it means committing murder.
* TragicDream: How Hiroshi describes his motive, anyways. He explains that Tadao's dream of opening a prominent restaurant was one that he just could not give up, and that combined with his growing cynicism about the killing game is what led to him committing murder.
* VillainousBreakdown: As Hana and the others get closer to deducing him as the killer, Tadao continues to become infuriated by their accusations and yelling about how wrong each accusation is.
* WouldHitAGirl: When he thinks Hana is about to discover his hiding place for the kitchen knife, he runs over and stabs her in the leg with it, then proceeds to knock her out with a large red wine bottle.

->"I'm not just some petty criminal stealing old ladies' purses, I do have some level of integrity!"

Considered to be the most prolific thief in the country, Hinata is responsible for numerous heists against prominent banks, museums, and even (according to rumors) the Togami corporation and the Kuzuryu clan. Despite being a criminal, Hinata is a laidback guy and a total jokester, not seeming to take many things seriously. Also, though he claims to enjoy what he does, his talent does seem to cause him some level of frustration...\

In Chapter 4, he attempts to frame both Ryoto and himself for Shiori's murder to save Rumi from execution, but is ultimately unsuccessful. Then, in Chapter 5, he goes along with Hana's plan to create a five-way tie in the voting and thus force the trial into a draw as a result of the trial being rigged. However, Monokuma still forces him and his classmates into a mass execution, but they are all saved by a castle-wide blackout. Hinata goes on to survive the final trial and escape the underground bunker alongside the other surviving students.
----
* ThirteenIsUnlucky: His father was captured and sent to jail for his crimes as Kage Ken when Hinata was thirteen years old.
* AintTooProudToBeg:
** He begs Monokuma to spare Rumi's life in Chapter 4, even breaking into tears as he does so.
** He again desperately tries to convince Monokuma not to execute everyone at the fifth trial.
* AllForNothing: His entire plan to help Rumi in Chapter 4 ends up falling apart by the end of the trial, and she ends up found guilty and executed anyways.
* AnimeHair: Purple hair styled into spikes pointing straight upwards.
* TheBarnum: He makes no effort to hide the fact that he's the Ultimate Thief, and he still winds up being able to snatch random things from both around the castle and his own classmates.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe:
** The reason he gives a pearl bracelet from the treasure room to Rumi is because he wanted to thank her for being one of the only students to truly be kind to him.
** Also seems to be the reason for his (implied) crush on Rumi- she was one of the only people who belived he could be more than just some petty theif.
* BerserkButton: Do not suspect him of something just because he's a thief.
* BigWordShout: He shouts "STOP!" just before the mass execution in Chapter 5.
* BrilliantButLazy: Downplayed in that his 'brilliance' is more like 'cleverness'. However, despite one of his main traits being how laidback/carefree his is, Hinata was still able to formulate and execute an entire plan to frame himself for Shiori's murder and stage a fake crime scene to do so- all in the span of one night, when he had only known about the incident between Shiori and Rumi for a very short time. It's also worth mentioning that it's implied Hinata wasn't even aware of Ryoto being unconscious in the East Wing until later on, and he still managed to come up with a way to incorporate him into his plan to complicate the case even more.
* ChangedMyMindKid: Before the third trial and during the first part of it, Hinata disregards what Hana has to say about Saku's note and chooses to hand it over to Akira, as he too believes Saku is the killer (and he simply does not want to be on Akira's bad side). However, come Part 2 and Shiro's dying clue that casts doubt on Saku being the killer, Hinata decides to help Hana by coming clean about having seen Shiro prior to the murders, which plays a large role in clearing Saku's name.
* ChekhovsSkill: He actually utilizes his parkour skills to navigate the broken stairs in the eastern watchtower (after Shiori smashed them as part of her murder plot) during Chapter 4.
* Determinator:
** He'll stop at nothing to ensure Rumi wins the class trial, whether that means framing Ryoto/himself to try and get the others to vote for the wrong person or trying to argue with Monokuma himself.
** During his execution, he fights hard to make it through the sadistic obstacle course and towards the 'EXIT' hatch in order to try and escape. Keep in mind, this is before the blackout hits and interrupts the execution.
* DeliberateInjuryGambit: He cuts himself on his arm with one of Shiori's scalpels and the dagger she used on Rumi to make it look like he had been in a struggle, thus incriminating himself in the murder.
* DelinquentHair: He has purple hair styled in a set of spikes.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Though he's willing to swipe things left and right, he won't legitimately steal something deeply personal to someone as shown in his third Free Time Event.
* FailedASpotCheck: Happens twice in Chapter 4:
** First, when cleaning the true scene of Shiori's murder- the main hall of the East Wing- he has to pick up the pieces of Rumi's bracelet that was broken off her wrist when she and Shiori fell off the second floor. He appears to do so successfully, but doesn't realize he left behind one singular pearl, which Hana would later discover during the investigation and use it against him during the trial.
** Then, during the investigation, he goes into Rumi's bedroom and swipes a memo she had written to herself as a reminder to meet Shiori in the East Wing at midnight, then goes up to the South Wing's lounge to burn it in the fireplace. Unfortunately, he leaves the door open a little bit, allowing Asuna and Hana to take notice and enter the room to investigate.
* FalseConfession: He confesses to being the blackened student in the fourth trial- however, this is later proven to be incorrect, and he was in fact trying to protect the real blackened, Rumi.
* FameThroughInfamy: He is well-known for all the daring heists he pulls off, although at its core being a thief is still illegal. Hinata is aware of this, and he's not as proud as he makes himself out to be...
* ForWantOfANail: Had he not missed picking up one of the pearls from Rumi's bracelet while cleaning the real crime scene, Hana wouldn't have found it later on and thus she would have been unable to use it to prove his innocence and Rumi's involvement in the murder during the trial.
* FrameUp: He does this twice in Chapter 4, despite not being the killer; once towards Ryoto, and the other towards himself.
* GracefulLoser: In Chapter 5, after Hana sufficiently destroys his theory claiming Asuna is the culprit, he simply accepts her reasoning and doesn't try to argue further, realizing there's not much for him to argue against anyways.
* HeroicBSOD: He doesn't take Rumi's death well at all, collapsing onto his knees in grief-stricken silence after attempting to attack Monokuma. He gets better midway through Chapter 5, however, thanks to Ryoto and Hana.
* HiddenHeartOfGold:
** Despite his carefree and mischievous exterior, his agreement to help Rumi set up the memorial to their dead classmates at the beginning of Chapter 4 shows him to have this.
** Further evidence of this can be seen with how hard he tries to prevent Rumi from being outed as Shiori's killer, even it means trying to get everyone else to vote for the wrong person.
* HiddenInPlainSight: When the others question where Rumi's (presumably damaged) bracelet went following the murder, he reveals he had simply been keeping it in his hoodie pocket the entire time.
* HonorAmongThieves: Despite what he does, it's made clear Hinata does have a set of morals, as evident by the quote above.
* ILied: In his Free Time Events, he lied about the nature of his living status as well as exaggerating the details of his first theft to play up his status as an Ultimate Thief.
* JapaneseDelinquent: This is a given, with him being the Ultimate Thief.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold:
** He's a complete jokester and doesn't seem to take many things seriously, but he has been shown to have a good heart despite his talent.
** This can be seen especially strongly in Chapter 4, when he tries to sacrifice himself (and his other classmates) to save Rumi's life.
* JustLikeRobinHood: His first Free Time Event has him talk about how he comes from a poor neighborhood, and therefore he sometimes gives what he takes to some of his neighbors so they can afford decent stuff.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: Chapter 3, Part 3 shows that he is has mysteriously forgotten a portion of the events of that morning, including him, Rumi, and Hiroshi finding Hana nearly dead from an attack in the wine room. The cause of his memory loss is later revealed to have been Tadao testing the Despair Drink.
* LeParkour: He has incredible skill at parkour due to all the running around he's done as a master thief.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: He feels immensely guilty over his actions during Shiori's trial, especially since his actions ended up being for naught anyways. The others, mainly Ryoto and Hana, help him overcome this in Chapter 5.
* NotMeThisTime: When one of Itachi's knives goes missing in Chapter 2, he is quick to blame Hinata. However, he vehemently insists he isn't the one who took it.
** Turns out he's telling the truth; not only did he not take the knife, but the knife was never stolen to begin with.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: When the remaining students first split up to look for Shiori and Ryoto in Chapter 4, Hinata shows a shocking amount of initiative- likely to Foreshadowing foreshadow the fact that he himself played a role in setting up Ryoto to look like Shiori's killer. Hana even lampshades this as he leaves:
->Hana: WHO ARE YOU!?
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: One of the reasons he remains a thief, even after his father's imprisonment, is because he needs to sustain his and his mother's living somehow, as she won't work.
* PhantomThief: Although he's far from classy, he does fall into this category as the Ultimate Thief who has stolen from places such as museums.
* RobbingTheDead: During each Deadly Life, he tries to "investigate" the respective victims' rooms with the intent of seeking out anything valuable- he gets caught by Hana each time.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: He wears a crimson one around his neck.
* ScreamsLikeALittleGirl: In Chapter 5, he lets out a high-pitched scream during two of the blackouts in the castle.
* ShotAtDawn: It seems like his execution would have ended with him being shot to death by a firing squad of policemen Monokumas.
* ShouldntYouStopStealing: Several characters call him out on his thieving ways, with many of them distrusting them as a result.
* SilentScapegoat: He attempts to become this in Chapter 4, falsifying evidence against him and destroying evidence against Rumi to paint himself as Shiori's killer. Even Rumi is completely unaware of his actions until the middle of the fourth trial.
* StickyFingers: His modus operandi- although he has pulled off legitimate heists big and small in the past, during the killing game he tends to just swipe random items off of his classmates simply for the fun of it.
* SurpassedTheTeacher: He becomes a greater thief than his father, even an Ultimate title- something Yoshikage, despite his prowess, was never able to do. Subverted, however, in that Hinata's not too happy about it.
* Troll: He's a complete jokester, often swiping random things from his classmates for the fun of it. Fortunately, he'll return whatever he took soon afterwards.
* TakingTheBullet: A non-lethal and unintentional example; Tadao intended to test the Despair Drink out on Ryoto, but Hinata being Hinata swiped the drink and, thinking it was just a normal beverage, ingested it. This resulted in him being the one under the Drink's amnesic effects instead of Ryoto.
* TragicKeepsake: The broken remains of the pearl bracelet he gave to Rumi in Chapter 3, which he took as part of his attempt to hide evidence incriminating her, evidently becomes this by the end of Chapter 4.
* UnwantedRescue: On the receiving end of this in Chapter 4. He is all but proven to be Shiori's killer, even going so far as to confess to the murder...only for Hana to realize something is wrong and provide evidence that casts enough doubt on his guilt to keep the trial going. Since being voted as the blackened was part of Hinata's plan, he is not happy about this.
* UnwittingPawn: Inverted in Chapter 4- Rumi was the culprit, and he was the "accomplice" trying to hide the evidence that incriminated her. However, Hinata never told Rumi what he was planning to do, and she didn't connect the dots until the middle of the trial.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: His initial reactions to the blackouts in Chapter 5 imply he may be afraid of the dark, or at least power outages.
* YellowEyesOfSneakiness: They go well with his purple hair, as well as befitting his title as a thief and his laidback, Troll jokester tendencies.
* YouAreNotAlone: He is on the receiving end of this in Chapter 5 when Hana describes her own grief from the killing game in an attempt to make Hinata realize his classmates aren't as angry with him as he believes.

A somewhat new face on the racing tracks, yet Ryoto has been a rising star with his incredible skills in a racecar and his current undefeated streak. When he's not racing, he is as boisterous and hot-headed as they come, acting like some kind of superhero half the time and lacking an indoor voice the other half. Although his heart is truly in the right place, his brain leaves a lot to be desired.\

In Chapter 4, Hinata attempts to frame him (as well as himself) for Shiori's murder, but Hana is able to prove him innocent. Then, in Chapter 5, he goes along with Hana's plan to create a five-way tie in the voting and thus force the trial into a draw as a result of the trial being rigged. Ryoto goes on to survive the final trial and escape the underground bunker alongside the other surviving students.
----
* AnimeHair: It's spiky and dyed a bright yellow with cyan streaks. It's no wonder it gets made fun of often.
* BadassCape: He wears an electric blue one.
* BadassDriver: He's the Ultimate Racecar Driver who has yet to lose a race.
* CaptainObvious: Has been known to make such remarks.
* CompressedHair: It's anyone's guess how Shiori was able to fit Ryoto's mane of hair into the armor suit's helmet during Chapter 4.
* DefeatEqualsExplosion: His execution ends with (or would have ended with) the racecar Ryoto is trapped in being blown up as a result of the gasoline puddle it is parked on top of being ignited by a falling, damaged neon sign.
* DefiantToTheEnd: Before the mass execution, he declares to Monokuma he won't die without a fight. True to his word, he struggles as hard as he can against the chain that drags him to his own execution as well as against the restraints trapping him inside the racecar.
* DeliberateInjuryGambit: In Chapter 4, he plans to throw himself off the second floor of the South Wing in the hopes of injuring himself, thereby needing Shiori to fix him up and thus boosting her confidence back up. Due to Akira's untimely appearance, it doesn't quite work.
* DopeSlap: Hinata gives him one towards the end of Part 3 of Chapter 5 after he loudly reveals he, Hinata, and Asuna were going to eavesdrop on Hana and Hiroshi's conversation.
* DumbMuscle: Despite his talent technically not having anything to do with fighting, Ryoto is still one of the strongest students in the cast...but he's not exactly the brightest bulb in the bunch.
* DumbassHasAPoint:
** Ryoto, realizing that the party might make a good opportunity for a murderer to strike (especially with four people not attending), comes up with the idea to keep a log of who goes in and out of the party and at what times.
** Played with in that the killer manages to get around the log rather easily; however, even though Ryoto's idea did not prevent a murder like he hoped it would, the log would still go on to be instrumental in sorting out the alibis of the amnesic party-goers.
* EtTuBrute: Although he and Shiori weren't particularly friends or close, he was still pretty crushed to learn she was planning on committing a murder and lured him into the East Wing/knocked him out with the intent of framing him.
* FalseConfession: He more or less confesses to Shiori's murder during the fourth trial, due to a combination of hearing all the evidence against him and not being able to fully recall the events of the night of the crime making him believe he did, in fact, kill her.
* FrameUp: Happens to him in Chapter 4- twice. The first time was Shiori, who knocked him out with anesthetic so she could make him a scapegoat for Rumi's murder. The second was (after Shiori is killed by her would-be victim) Hinata, who came across the unconscious Ryoto by chance and decided to try and make him look suspicious while also trying to frame himself.
* FullNameBasis: Downplayed in that he doesn't do this all the time, but he does call some of his peers (such as Hana) by their full names whenever he's being dramatic.
* HairTriggerTemper: It doesn't take much to set him off.
* HotBlooded: The biggest example of this trope in the class.
* ICanExplain: His response upon waking up in the eastern watchtower to find Shiori dead and his clothes splattered in blood.
* IHaveToGoIronMyDog: Makes this excuse before fleeing his conversation with Hana in Chapter 4:
->Ryoto: Uh, uh, uh- MY CAR'S ON FIRE!
* ILied: He admits to Hana during the investigation that he had lied about his last interaction with Shiori to hide the fact that the two had planned to meet up in the East Wing on the night of Shiori's murder.
* IgnoredEpiphany: His response to Hiroshi's explanation on Tadao's motive to kill is to immediately say he still hates what Tadao did.
* LargeHam: When he's not being a ditz, he's acting as dramatic as an old comic hero, as described in his bio.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: During Chapter 4, Ryoto finds himself unable to recall the events of the night of Shiori's murder, despite clear evidence of a struggle. Initially, he and the other students believe a head injury he has is to blame for this. However, it's later revealed to not exactly be amnesia at all- Shiori ambushed him right as he entered the East Wing and knocked him out with a syringe, so he was unconscious the entire night (including the time the murder took place).
* LiteralMinded:
** Inverted and played for laughs in Chapter 2:
-->Ryoto: Wh-!? Well of course she got stabbed in the back! One of our classmates fucking killed her, we ALL got stabbed in the back!
** Played straight in Chapter 4:
--->Akira: Well, I think it would be beneficial to discuss the elephant in the room. (to Ryoto) ...Miura.
--->Ryoto: Huh? I'm not an elephant! I'm not even that fat!
* NoIndoorVoice: He loves shouting, sometimes devolving into ALL CAPS LIKE THIS!!
* NotHelpingYourCase: Him constantly claiming one of the suits of armor from the East Wing's training room came to life and knocked him out during the fourth investigation/trial doesn't do much for his credibility.
* PluckyComicRelief: Serves as this for the male students with his Dumb Muscle tendencies and his dramatics.
* RedHerring:
** In Chapter 1, he refuses to answer Itachi's questions regarding his whereabouts on the night of the murder. This, combined with Hinata's claim that he saw someone wearing what could have been a cape running past the courtyard doors, seems to be setting him up to be involved in the crime or to be some kind of scapegoat- but in reality, he is not involved in the crime at all and any suspicion towards him is cleared rather quickly.
** Played straighter in Chapter 4, where he is the initial prime suspect for Shiori's murder- but he is ultimately found innocent in that trial too, although with a bit more difficulty than in Chapter 1.
* RightForTheWrongReasons:
** Played with; in Chapter 2, he accuses Tadao of murdering Kaneki due to his threatening behavior the night of the murder- not only is this not true, but Tadao wasn't even remotely involved in the crime. In Chapter 3, he suspects Tadao again, once again because of his vocal desire to kill and escape- this time, he's actually right, but he has no actual evidence to back it up.
** Also going back to Chapter 2: Tadao reveals at the end of the third trial that he actually was plotting a murder using the South Wing's second floor, but he had to scrap the plan when Itachi pulled off his own murder plot before he did. In short, Ryoto was completely justified in his suspicion and anger towards Tadao during the dinner meeting prior to that second murder.
* SirSwearsALot: He probably swears the most out of all his classmates.
* SmartBall: When helping to set up Rumi's party in Chapter 3, he comes up with the idea to keep a log of who goes in and out of the party area and at what times in the hopes that it would prevent someone from trying to commit murder. Subverted, however, in that the killer manages to find a way to leave the party without being seen by Ryoto, rendering the log useless in that regard.
* SuddenlyShouting: As mentioned in No Indoor Voice, Ryoto is prone to this as much as he is shouting in general.
* ThirdPersonPerson: Tends to slip into this from time to time.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: He is afraid of mice.

->"I pray that tonight, the good spirits shall watch over and protect us all... I do not wish to see harm brought upon anyone here."

A renowned kickboxing champion, Saku is actually the heir to the expansive Yamamoto Shinto shrine system. However, he has chosen to hone his skills as an athlete rather than focus on his family's duties- though he still practices their beliefs whenever he can. Despite being the largest and strongest student in the class, Saku prefers to stay out of conflict and remain neutral when he can, and he tends to remain one of the most levelheaded students.\
He is the first victim of Chapter 3, being knocked unconscious and then strangled to death by Tadao.
----
* AFriendInNeed: He takes it upon himself to try and talk things out with Shiro, despite the latter's clearly fractured mental state, because he doesn't want to see the formerly cheerful student so broken anymore.
* TheBigGuy: He's the token "giant" character of the cast.
* BornInTheWrongCentury: His speaking and general mannerisms make him come off as this.
* DueToTheDead: He doesn't take kindly too Ryoto and Tadao arguing just outside the storage room, where Kaneki's body is.
* EyesAlwaysShut: His eyes are described this way, only opening them when he is particularly shocked or perturbed.
* FrameUp: He is on the receiving end of this (posthumously) in Chapter 3 courtesy of Tadao.
* GeniusBruiser:
** Not only is the physically strongest character in the cast, but he also provides some intelligent insight into certain topics.
** He is also the one to wonder why Kaneki was unable to simply leave the study through the door to escape her killer in Chapter 2, a topic that ultimately leads to a substantial breakthrough in the case.
* GentleGiant: He is the largest and most muscular student in the 80th Class, yet he tends to avoid conflict.
* GoldColoredSuperiority: He is associated with the color gold (according to the cover art) and he is the strongest amongst his classmates (physically, anyways).
* GoodIsNotSoft: Downplayed. He tends to avoid conflict whenever he can, but he has shown himself to become angered and thus take some action when necessary, such as the Due To The Dead example above as well as saving Hinata from being blown up by Monokuma during the prologue.
* MurderSuicide: It appears that Saku had committed this in Chapter 3, but it is ultimately revealed to have been a cover-up by the killer.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: All Saku wanted to do was help Shiro overcome his guilt regarding his role in the prior murder, but he himself ends up murdered for his troubles.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: He serves as this for the 80th Class with his unique design compared to the other students.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: He writes a note to Shiro that appears to be setting him up for a trap, and Hana initially thinks that's what it is...but in reality, Saku had to write it that way due to Shiro only responding to those who plan to murder him. He makes it very clear to Hana that he has no intentions of killing him.
* SamuraiPonytail: His hair is tied into one.
* Seppuku: Averted in that Saku did not actually kill himself this way, but the killer slices his stomach and leaves the knife behind to make it look like he did.
* SleevesAreForWimps: He wears a sleeveless black tank top, most likely because his muscular arms would be hard to fit into any shirt sleeves.
* TokenReligiousTeammate: His bio states he is a practitioner of Shinto, and he has been described as praying on several occasions.
* WorldsStrongestMan: He's a champion kickboxer, with the size and muscle mass to boot. This is possibly subverted in that, because the fic takes place in the same timeline as the Hope's Peak arc, in-universe he is likely not on the same level as the actual official version of this trope, Sakura Ogami.

->"We're all friends, aren't we? And friends should trust each other, no matter what."

A boy with incredible writing skills that allow him to convey a variety of subjects through pen and paper. He has made a name for himself due to his ability to manipulate all forms of style and prose to best express the meaning of whatever poem he is working on. Shiro is incredibly kind-hearted and trusting, wanting nothing more than to brighten a friend's day however he can.\
He is an unwitting accomplice in the second murder, having been tricked by Itachi into (unknowingly) trapping Kaneki in the study with her killer. He then becomes the second victim of Chapter 3, accidentally walking in on Tadao finishing off Saku, leading to the former bludgeoning him to death with a stone statuette in order to silence him.
----
* BreakTheCutie: Learning his closest friend in the killing game not only murdered someone, but also used him for the crime crushes him. And unlike Asuna, who lives long enough to start to come to terms with the incident, Shiro is murdered just as he himself is starting to return to his usual state courtesy of Saku.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: He has gray-silver eyes to match his silvery hair.
* DeathEqualsRedemption: He accepts this belief to the point where he tells the other students to murder him, believing that giving his life for one of the others is the only way to atone for his role in Kaneki's murder (though it's implied he began to abandon that idea shortly before his death thanks to Saku's efforts).
* DespairEventHorizon: Come Chapter 3, Shiro seems to have crossed this as a result of the revelations from the second trial.
* TheDeterminator: When Itachi is being accused of murdering Kaneki, Shiro refuses to give up on his friend's innocence, even after the revelation that Itachi was the one who asked him to lock the study door on the night of the murder.
* DyingClue: Downplayed in that he's not dying as he writes it, but Shiro does attempt to write a physical description of his killer just before he is killed; however, the killer catches up to him and murders him before he can finish writing.
* EtTuBrute: He is absolutely devastated when Itachi is revealed to have both murdered Kaneki and tricked him into assisting with the plot, to the point where he questions if their friendship meant anything to him.
* ExplainExplainOhCrap: During the second trial, the group realizes that the only reason Kaneki would have been unable to leave the study was because the door was locked from the outside, meaning the killer had an accomplice. Shiro starts to ponder aloud who the accomplice could be, listing out when they would have had to have locked the door in time for the murder...then comes to the horrifying realization that he was the accomplice.
* FatalFlaw: The absolute and naive trust he puts in his friends. This made it all too easy for Itachi to trick him into helping with his murder plot; all Itachi had to do was simply ask Shiro to do the task, and Shiro didn't even ask questions because, due to the trust he had towards Itachi, he never once considered the possibility that Itachi's intentions were anything malicious.
* HeKnowsTooMuch: The reason Tadao kills him; he was coming back to the sunroom after retrieving his notebook...only to walk in on Tadao and a freshly-killed Saku.
* HeroicBSOD: The conclusion of the second trial leaves him a mess, to the point where he has completely shut down by the next morning.
* Keet: Downplayed because he does not exhibit the hyperactive aspect of this trope, but he plays the small, cute, and cheerful part completely straight (the events of Chapter 3 aside).
* LateToTheTragedy: As a result of his guilt regarding breaking Akira's "don't lock the door to the study" rule, Shiro had a difficult time falling asleep the night of Kaneki's murder. As a result, he wakes up far later than everyone else, and as such slept through the morning meeting, the body discovery announcement, and the beginning of the investigation- in other words, he has absolutely no idea that a murder occurred until Hana tells him.
* NiceGuy: He's sweet and caring about his peers, wanting nothing more than for everyone to remain hopeful despite the circumstances.
* RunningAwayToCry: He does this after attempting to apologize for the role he played in Kaneki's murder.
* PerpetualSmiler: Unless something like an investigation or a trial is happening, one can expect Shiro to always be smiling as part of his cheerful attitude.
* PleaseKillMeIfItSatisfiesYou: He tells the students in Chapter 3 that he wants one of them to murder him so they can have the chance to escape the castle, for he believes his life is no longer worth as much compared to the others.
* PowerOfTrust: Wholeheartedly believes in this trope, stating several times how true friends should trust each other no matter what. Shame it gets exploited to high heaven (see Fatal Flaw above).
* ShorterMeansSmarter: He's the smallest of all the male students, but he's famous for his incredible writing ability.
* TapOnTheHead: Tadao murders him by bashing him on the head with a stone statuette of a Chinese dragon, killing him instantly.
* TragicBromance: With Itachi.
* UnwittingPawn: Becomes one for Kaneki's murder, for he was the one who locked the study door from the outside, unknowingly trapping her inside with a killer.
* VisibleSilence: As a result of his emotional state following Itachi's execution.
* WaistcoatOfStyle: Wears a gray one underneath his jacket.
* WasItAllALie: He asks Itachi this, wondering if their friendship meant anything to him considering how easily he tricked him into helping with the murder. This results in Itachi responding that no, their friendship was genuine, and he thoroughly regrets what he did.

->"Make no mistake, though my family name is 'Kunata', I am Itachi above all else."

The heir to the Kunata clan, Itachi is a young man who has mastered all forms of weaponry. He has learned how to properly wield, repair, and maintain everything from blades to firearms and everything in between. He has a strong sense of morality, valuing honor above all else and acting quite courteous despite his intimidating demeanor.\
He is the culprit of Chapter 2, plotting to murder Asuna only to end up killing Kaneki instead. Monokuma attempts to execute him by forcing him to fight a group of robots themed after warriors from different time periods; however, Itachi ultimately sabotages the execution by committing seppuku instead.
----
* AnimeHair: His hair is specifically described as being styled into three spikes pointing to the left, as seen in his pixel sprite above. How he gets it like that, nobody knows.
* BadassesWearBandanas: He wears a dark green one around the lower half of his face.
* BadassLongcoat: He wears one of these, styled after a samurai's jinbaori.
* BornInTheWrongCentury: He's very...samurai.
* CulturedBadass: Despite his intimidating appearance, Itachi is very polite and courteous to his classmates. He also particularly enjoys Shiro's poetry, and he has also been shown to enjoy drinking tea.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: As a child, Itachi held his father, Hanzo Kunata, in high regards and loved everything about his family. Then, his father became involved in a massive arms smuggling ring, attempting to throw the blame onto his brother/Itachi's uncle, Syo Kunata, when he was found out. In the end, Hanzo was sent to jail for his crimes against the country, Syo was thrown into a depression, and everyone even remotely related to Hanzo was shamed and distrusted. Itachi worked his whole life to try and restore his family's name, believing that graduating Hope's Peak would be a massive step in doing so. Monokuma's motive, the confirmation that those who won the killing game and graduated would still find success in whatever they chose to do afterwards, renews this desire of his enough to drive him to murder.
* DeathEqualsRedemption: He commits to this belief, stating that the only to atone for what he did is to die.
* DrivenToSuicide: How Itachi ultimately dies, killing himself in the middle of his execution in a symbolic apology for murdering Kaneki.
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: Itachi is found guilty of Kaneki's murder and sent off to his execution just like any other blackened. At first, he actually plays along with Monokuma's death trap, fighting the robots sent to kill him. However, ultimately he stops fighting back, gets into a sitting position on the ground...then drives the knife into and across his gut. In doing so, he not only dies on his own terms as he wanted to, but he was able to (figuratively) wipe the smirk off of Monokuma's face like he wanted.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: He not only accepts his impending execution, he makes it very clear to Monokuma that he wants to die on order to atone for his actions...but he makes it clear it will be on his terms, not Monokuma's.
* FaceHeelTurn: At the start of the story, he was considered one of the most level-headed and honorable students in the 80th Class. He and Shiro even allowed Hana and Hiroshi to join them in some tea, helping improve the former's emotional state following her grief towards the events of Chapter 1. Then, Monokuma reveals the second motive, and it drives Itachi to commit a brutal murder. It's pretty telling when nearly everyone in the class is shocked and confused when he is revealed to be the killer.
* FamilyHonor: His entire motivation for committing murder was graduating so he could restore the Kunata family name.
* FreakOut: Though he is willing to plan the murder, the idea of doing so puts Itachi at conflict with his morals, resulting in large amounts of mental stress. All he wanted was for his plan to go off without a hitch...but when Kankei shows up at the storage room instead of his target (Asuna) and tries to talk him out of committing the murder, without considering Itachi's own feelings, Itachi snaps. He becomes furious with her, takes out one of his knives, and lashes out in his blind fury.
* GetItOverWith: He says this in regards to the voting time.
* GladiatorGames: His execution is (initially) this, with Itachi being thrust into a Roman Colosseum and forced to battle to the death with a group of robots styled after fighters from different time periods.
* IveComeTooFar: The reason he doesn't confess to Kaneki's murder right away, despite his powerful guilt, is because he feels that doing so would render everything he's done prior to, during, and after the crime pointless.
* IcyBlueEyes: He has these, which go well with his quiet and stoic demeanor.
* Irony: Discussed during the conclusion of the second trial:
->Itachi: It's ironic, isn't it? I did all of this for the sake of honor. But now, after hearing Monokuma's story- I realize that, for Kaneki to sacrifice her life to save a friend, in an attempt to atone for her past...no doubt, she had more honor than I ever will.
* LastRequest: His final request to the others is that they never repeat his mistake, never allow another murder like this to happen.
* MultiMeleeMaster: Being the Ultimate Weapons Expert, he is skilled at both kinds of arms, as well as anything in between.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Anyone can plan and say they can commit a murder- but actually committing the act is another thing entirely. Itachi learned this the hard way when killing Kaneki- according to him, he was horrified as he watched her die from the slash wound he gave her, even telling the other students that he was still haunted by the sight.
* NothingPersonal: He says this to Asuna in regards to why he targeted her- he just needed a target, and Asuna was the smallest and weakest student in the class.
* NotSoStoic: However, even Itachi isn't immune to losing his cool at times, such as when he angrily accuses Hinata of stealing one of his hunting knives. And then there's his breakdown, as described below.
* Ronin: What his motif essentially amounts to, with his outfit and his mannerisms.
* Seppuku: How he kills himself during his execution, using his remaining hunting knife.
* SpannerInTheWorks: Based on what Tadao revealed at the end of the third trial, he had actually been planning to kill during Chapter 2, but had to scrap the plan due to Itachi's crime. In short, Itachi unknowingly prevented Tadao from being able to kill someone until Chapter 3.
* TheStoic: He is the strongest example in the whole cast, even more so than Hiroshi or Akira.
* TragicBromance: With Shiro.
* VillainousBreakdown: As Hana gets closer and closer to revealing him as the killer, Itachi starts to lose his cool more, to the point where he becomes OOCIsSeriousBusiness uncharacteristically furious the more he is being accused.
* WouldHitAGirl: Played extremely straight as he is the one who murdered Kaneki, one of the female students. Not to mention his initial target was another female student, Asuna.

!!Other Characters

header:Monokuma
!!!Headmaster of Hope's Peak Academy

->"You kids should show a little respect! After all, you're looking at the gracious headmaster of Hope's Peak Academy!"

The so-called headmaster of Hope's Peak Academy, Monokuma is a robotic bear with a sadistic side. He is the proprietor of the 80th Class's killing game, trapping them inside the castle, maintaining the rules, and putting pressure on each of the students to commit murder in order to escape.
----
* ActionBomb: He's able to blow himself up if threatened.
* AllCrimesAreEqual: Downplayed; while he has no qualms about executing students for breaking rules, committing murder, or for being late to the class trial, there are a few gray areas. For example, he won't execute someone for vandalizing parts of the castle (although he'll still find some other way to punish them), and he also does not punish someone if they're knocked out outside their room (after all, 'sleeping' and 'unconsciousness' are very different).
* BerserkButton:
** He completely flips out whenever someone finds something with the red hand-and-Monokuma eye symbol on it (i.e. something with a connection to Dark Hand).
** In addition, he's left in blistering rage when Itachi botches his own execution by committing suicide, dying on his own terms instead of Monokuma's.
** During the final trial, Hana provokes him into clawing her, thus providing proof that it was his claws that caused the slash wounds on Hiroshi's ankles. Monokuma is so outraged at being tricked that he attacks Hana again.
* BigBad: The only consistency in a Danganronpa work also applies to this fanfic.
** TheDragon: Chapter 6 makes it clear Monokuma is only a tool/extension of the real mastermind, Nanako. Above that, he is also only an extension of Dark Hand's will.
* BigBrotherIsWatching: He keeps a close surveillance on the 80th Class throughout the story.
%%* BreakThemByTalking: He's prone to doing the former on the surviving students and the latter in regards to the victims and killers.
* BigWhat: He shouts one of these following the students' successful five-way tie in the voting at the end of the fifth trial.
* BodyBackupDrive: He has multiple copies of himself to replace one should it be destroyed for some reason. All then simultaneously self-destruct when Nanako takes the wheel in Chapter 6's trial.
* DefeatEqualsExplosion: After Hana successfully identifies Nanako as the mastermind/Hiroshi's killer, Monokuma bids farewell to the students before blowing up one last time...and then the rest of his body doubles self-destruct after Nanako formally reveals herself.
* DidIJustSayThatOutLoud: When Hana confronts him about her motive video (or lack thereof) in Chapter 4, he angrily blurts out that he had "nothing to work with" in regards to her and her video, then nervously tries to recant his words. This is likely a reference to the fact that Hana, unlike the other students, has no personal profile regarding her fears/weaknesses, a fact that Monokuma/the mastermind wouldn't want Hana to know.
* DidntSeeThatComing: It's pretty clear he was blindsided by all the other students actually trusting Hana and going along with her plan to create a five-way tie in the voting. Sure, he still manages to come up with an excuse to kill the class anyways, but his initial bewilderment still appeared rather genuine.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: He'll force teenagers to murder each other and then execute the convicted killers in brutal ways, but he will not stand for underage drinking.
* EvilIsHammy: He's quite a drama queen, often times switching moods at the drop of a hat.
* EvilLaugh: "Puhuhuhu!"
* ExactWords: His favorite method of deflecting blame whenever students call him out for being untruthful.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Though he speaks in an easygoing manner and acts like he has the students' best interests at heart, at the end of the day he's most concerned with ensuring the killing game runs as smoothly as possible.
* GracefulLoser: However, when the truth finally is revealed, Monokuma doesn't try to fight anymore- he simply bids a fond farewell to his "students" before self-destructing one last time.
* HangingJudge: As per the rules of the killing game, he will execute any student found guilty of murder, no matter the circumstances.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Because he never bothered to repair the broken cable that the killer used on Hiroshi, the castle's power room was unable to handle the electrical output from running five executions at once, causing the blackout that would allow the students to escape certain death.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: Sometimes he acts concerned or happy for the students for one reason or another, but at the end of the day he's only concerned with making sure the killing game remains going as smoothly and entertainingly as possible.
* Jerkass: He's Monokuma, after all.
* KilledOffForReal: He and his duplicates all self-destruct after Nanako is ousted as Hiroshi's killer, and he makes no more personal appearances in the story after that.
* KillerTeddyBear: He's the main overseer/enforcer of the killing game who also happens to be a robotic teddy bear.
* KnightOfCerebus: His cutesy appearance aside, it can be expected that the narrative is going to take a dramatic and deadly turn whenever Monokuma appears, doubly so if the students were being friendly and happy with each other beforehand.
* MeaningfulName: His name is a combination of "monochrome" (black and white), and "kuma" which means "bear" in Japanese.
* MascotVillain: He is the main mascot of the Danganronpa franchise, and his status as the main villain is no different in Fractured Fates.
* MediumAwareness: He makes several comments that reference the fact that he's in a written fanfic.
* NeverMyFault:
** He always turns the blame for the deaths and murders onto the students themselves, claiming that while he provides the motives that lead to the murders, he himself is simply an observer of the killing game.
** Taken up to eleven in the fifth trial when the students are (rightfully) accusing him of rigging the trial against them.
* TheNicknamer: He's prone to giving various nicknames to the students- some more dignified than others.
* RulesLawyer: Despite his sadism, he insists that he's dedicated to keeping the trials fair and balanced to ensure the killing game runs as intended.
* SadistTeacher: He's the students' "headmaster", but he's not above threatening and something even somewhat harming the students (mostly Hana in regards to the latter) if they step out of line.
* ScrewTheRulesIMakeThem: The other students realize he did something to ensure Hiroshi's trial would be unwinnable, but when confronted on this he more or less responds with this mindset.
--->Akira: Th-This isn't just a matter of unfairness- to execute us like this because of a clearly faulty trial, it goes against your own rules! It must!
--->Monokuma: Puhuhu! My dear prosecutor... I'm the one that makes the rules.
* SlasherSmile: He already has this by default, but sometimes he intensifies it in moments of particular cruelty.
* StealthHiBye: As usual, he's good at appearing in any room in the castle (even the students' bedrooms) at any time to an uncanny degree, often times frightening the students (mostly Hana) with his sudden appearances.
* VillainousBreakdown: He gets angrier and angrier throughout the final trial the closer the students get to revealing the truth behind Hiroshi's murder and the mastermind's identity.

->"Ahahaha! Long time no see, everyone! So, was I worth the wait or what?"

The 16th member of the 80th Class and the mastermind behind the killing game. Nanako was a regular student at Hope's Peak Academy, her title being the Ultimate Hacker, until The Tragedy occurred and caused her and her classmates to scatter around the country. She was later captured by the group known as Dark Hand to participate in a killing game alongside her other classmates- more specifically, she and Hiroshi were meant to be the game's 'traitors'. In an attempt to stop the killing game before it began, she helped Hiroshi erase the memories of the game's original mastermind, Agent 44. However, Dark Hand and Agent 44 had a backup plan in place, and as a result Nanako was taken and had her mind broken into becoming the replacement mastermind- though her true goal with masterminding the killing game was to take revenge on the person she blamed for her condition.\
She is also the culprit of Chapter 5, kidnapping Hiroshi and electrocuting him to death in an attempt to prevent him from revealing the truth about the killing game to Hana. After failing to sabotage the fifth trial, Nanako attempts to kill everyone (herself included) using an explosive self-destruct sequence during the last trial, but she is thwarted when Hana sacrifices her life to shut the bunker down. Rather than face punishment for her crimes, Nanako escapes the bunker using a last-ditch escape route, leaving her ultimate fate unknown.
----
* ADayInTheLimelight: She's the POV character for two of the three intermission chapters, "Eyes and Ears" and "Fragment of Hope".
* AmbiguousSituation: It's unclear if Nanako's hatred towards Hana was genuine or a result of her warped mindset due to Dark Hand's torture. Her behavior during the final trial suggests the former, but the video she left for Hana as seen in the Epilogue fuels the ambiguity.
* ArmorPiercingResponse: She drops several of these throughout the trial, but most prominently when revealing the truth behind The Tragedy.
-->Akira: Well, Tokumei? Are Amari and I right? Is...'The Tragedy'...real?
-->Nanako: Oh yeah. It happened. One-hundred percent.
* AxCrazy: She threatens violence against the students on more than one occasion during the final trial, not to mention her murder of Hiroshi was quite gruesome.
* BatmanGambit: Her last backup plan involves Hana and the other students uncovering the truth behind the killing game, just like they do in all the other trials...leading to them discovering the fact that Hana was the original mastermind. Knowing who Hana is, Nanako believed learning the truth would break her to the point where she would be unable to activate the bunker's mastermind-controlled killswitch.
* BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil: Her torture at the hands of Dark Hand after erasing Hana's memories left her with nothing more than the desire to get revenge on Hana for forcing her and her classmates into the Killing Game in the first place.
* BetterToDieThanBeKilled: She's painfully aware that Dark Hand will most likely kill her for her actions during the sixth trial as well as for trying to sabotage the fifth trial, which is why she is more than willing to allow herself to be buried alive in the trial room alongside the others should the bombs go off successfully.
* BreakThemByTalking: She attempts this twice in the final trial- once when the students are upset about the apocalyptic state of the outside world, and then later after Hana is revealed to be Agent 44 and the original mastermind. Both are ultimately thwarted, but she comes dangerously close.
* BrilliantButLazy: She's intelligent enough to be considered the Ultimate Hacker (including successfully tampering with a sophisticated piece of technology like an e-Handbook) as well as being able to quickly come up with backup plans towards the end of the killing game. However, as stated in the second Chapter ???, she hates putting effort into anything that's not related to technology (although, considering that chapter took place in the past, it's hard to say how much of that still applies to Nanako in the present).
* ChekhovsGunman: Her existence is revealed at the end of Chapter 2 with the class photos Hana receives on her e-Handbook, though at that time nothing is known about her besides her appearance. Her role as the killing game's mastermind isn't revealed until much later.
* CoveredInScars: Her torso is covered in numerous scars as a result of the torture Dark Hand inflicted on her.
* DesecratingTheDead: After killing Hiroshi, she stabs him in the chest with a kitchen knife and then suspends his body by a noose, both to confuse his cause of death and to taunt the surviving students.
* DissonantSerenity: During the final trial, she never shows concern about the timed bombs threatening to cave in the trial room and kill everyone inside- probably because she's the one who activated them to begin with.
* TheDogBitesBack: Due to her immense hatred of Dark Hand as a result of the horrible things they did to her, Nanako doesn't hesitate to fully betray them and attempt to sabotage the killing game by blowing up the bunker after she's fully found out during the final trial.
* EvenEvilHasStandards:
** If one considers Monokuma to be an extension of Nanako herself, then she seems to have an aversion to underage drinking.
** Additionally, she considers both Ultimate Despair and Dark Hand to be a bunch of lunatics, despising them and their beliefs with all her heart.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood:
** Nanako was confident that Hana would remain in despair and that the other students would turn against her upon learning that she was the original mastermind and a devoted member of Dark Hand, and as a result is bewildered when the other students manage to forgive Hana and bring her out of her despair.
** As Akira points out, Nanako never once considered the possibility that Hana would renounce Dark Hand and choose to atone for her past sins, nor did she consider that the other students would forgive Hana for everything. Nanako's inability to account for these is what ultimately leads to her downfall.
* EvilFormerFriend: If the photos of the 80th Class and the second intermission chapter are any indication, Nanako was on relatively good terms with many of her classmates prior to The Tragedy and the killing game, especially Hana. And then Dark Hand got a hold of everyone.
* EvilIsHammy: Nanako talks in an animated way, punctuating many of her statements with evil laughs, and emphasizing many of her words in the most dramatic ways possible.
* ExhaustedEyeBags: She has these as a result of her less than stellar sleeping arrangements and schedule.
* FaceHeelTurn: She was originally working alongside Hiroshi to stop the killing game before it even began, sharing in his belief that there was still some good in Hana despite her evil deeds and helping to erase her memories rather than kill her. However, Hana created a backup plan to make either Nanako or Hiroshi a replacement mastermind should something happen to her, which led to Dark Hand choosing Nanako and torturing her into submission. Even though Hana never directly told Dark Hand how to make the chosen traitor cooperate, it was clear she didn't care what they did, leading to Nanako blaming Hana for what happened to her. This, in turn, led to Nanako agreeing to mastermind the killing game solely to take revenge on Hana, also leading to her murdering Hiroshi himself later on to prevent him from revealing the truth.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Sometimes, she'll speak to the students in a more casual or kind tone, but she'll just as easily switch back to her regular unhinged and sadistic behavior right after.
* TheGadfly: She played this trope straight during her time at Hope's Peak. In the past, she was prone to teasing and joking with her classmates, oftentimes at their expense.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Had she not chosen to finish Hiroshi off via electrocution, she wouldn't have had to worry about any castle-wide blackouts, allowing the mass execution in Chapter 5 to happen without any issues and Nanako to get away with Hiroshi's murder.
* HopeCrusher: She makes several attempts at this during the final trial, and even earlier while she was still under the guise of Monokuma. It never lasts long, however.
* IncomingHam: How does she introduce herself to the surviving students? By turning off the trial room's lights, turning on colorful strobe lights, and then appearing with her back to the students when the regular lights return.
* Jerkass: As the one responsible for the events and deaths of the killing game, she's not the most pleasant person to be around.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She was this prior to The Tragedy and the killing game- messing with her classmates in various ways, but it's made clear in the second Chapter ??? that she cared about them to some degree.
* KarmaHoudini: Despite murdering Hiroshi in Chapter 5 and being found out, she is not executed as other blackened students are; she also manages to escape the bunker altogether and return to the surface after killing Hana, dodging apprehension. It's played with, however, in that Nanako essentially has a massive target on her back due to betraying Dark Hand, not to mention Akira herself vows to find Nanako and bring her justice no matter what.
* LeanAndMean: She's quite skinny to a sickly or unhealthy degree (likely a result of whatever Dark Hand did to her) and the story's final and most dastardly villain.
* TheManBehindTheCurtain: She's physically weak and feeble compared to some of the things Monokuma could pull off, but it's subverted in that Nanako proves to be even more dangerous than Monokuma despite her physical state.
* MeaningfulAppearance: Her skin and hair have grown paler compared to her appearance prior to the killing game, she has deep bags under her eyes, and her eyes are now inexplicably red; all of this serves to reflect how Nanako's mental state has been shattered compared to how she was as a student at Hope's Peak.
* MeaninglessVillainVictory: The killing game results in the deaths of eleven out of the fifteen participants, with the last death being both caused by Nanako personally and directed at the one person Nanako hated the most. However, since the bombs were stopped, there is no way for Nanako to use death to avoid retribution for her crimes as the mastermind and for her murders of Hiroshi and Hana. Also, Dark Hand is likely going to try and hunt her down for her betrayal and sabotage of the killing game. Also also, Hana did not die in suffering as Nanako wanted her to- she died completely on her own terms despite Nanako being the one who killed her.
* MoodSwinger: No matter how calm or casual she is at one moment, she could shift to furiously irritated or completely unhinged at the slightest provocation.
* MotiveRant: She devolves into doing this more than once- describing why she killed Hiroshi, explaining Dark Hand and their goals, explaining why she hates Agent 44/Hana so much...
* NotBrainwashed: Despite Dark Hand's torture and attempts at brainwashing, Nanako still has her own free will- as such, she is acting as the killing game's mastermind almost completely of her own will.
* NotInThisForYourRevolution: She couldn't care less about Dark Hand's motives, goals, or philosophy- the only reason she's acting as the killing game's mastermind is so she can get revenge on Agent 44/Hana as well her intense fear of being harmed by Dark Hand even more.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Her eyes are a gleaming red, reflecting her dangerous and unhinged state as the killing game's mastermind.
* Revenge: Her main motivation for acting as the killing game's overseer boils down to this. She blames Hana/Agent 44 for the awful torture Dark Hand put her through and wants to make Hana suffer (almost) as much as she did by any means necessary, whether that be by putting her through a killing game or revealing the Awful Truth of her old identity as a Dark Hand member.
* Sadist: She has no qualms about sacrificing her classmates for the sake of getting revenge on Hana. Then there's what she did to Hiroshi...
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: After the bunker and the bombs are completely shut down, Nanako activates her so-called "Plan Z" to avoid being apprehended by Akira and the other survivors: an escape route under Monokuma's throne that, presumably, leads back to the surface.
* SlasherSmile: She's described as doing this on multiple occasions throughout the sixth trial.
* SpannerInTheWorks: It turns out she was this to herself. Those mysterious messages Hana was receiving on her e-Handbook since Chapter 1- the same messages that provided Hana with helpful clues about the truth behind the killing game- were actually set up by her before she was taken away to be tortured. This was part of a backup plan between her and Hiroshi to help Hana remember her role as the original mastermind so she could then use the mastermind-controlled killswitch to shut down the killing game manually. The reason Nanako didn't try to do anything about the messages throughout the killing game proper was because she had Hiroshi take away her memories of tampering with the e-Handbook in order to prevent her future, mastermind self from sabotaging said backup plan.
* ThanatosGambit: Her final plan in the sixth trial is to use a series of bombs secretly installed within the bunker to create a cave-in and kill everyone in the trial room...including herself.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: Nanako murders Hiroshi by using Monokuma to slash his ankles and bludgeon him in the head, then mutilates his hands/wrists and electrocutes him personally (the latter being his true cause of death).
* VillainousBreakdown: She loses it after Hana breaks out of her Heroic BSOD and renounces her past as Agent 44/vows to atone for her past sins.
* WalkingSpoiler: It's hard to talk about her in-depth without spoiling the massive role she plays in the story.
* XanatosSpeedChess: She creates a multitude of plans and backup plans as the story reaches its climax. First simply trying to create an impossible murder in Hiroshi's first trial, then trying to execute the five students for voting wrong/supposedly breaking the rules, then hoping to get them to vote wrong in the retrial, then trying to blow everyone (including herself) up using the self-destruct sequence implemented into the bunker, then mentally breaking Hana with the truth of her past as Agent 44 so she'd be unable to activate the killswitch and stop the bombs, then attempting to simply kill Hana using the Arms of Gungnir before she can reach the button.

A group that was formed during The Tragedy made of individuals who were bitter about the chaotic state of the world, disillusioned with the idea of hope, hateful of Ultimate Despair, or a combination of all of these. Founded and led by a former member of Ultimate Despair named Kurosora, Dark Hand operates in the shadows to find and "kill" all sources of hope while also acting against the machinations of Ultimate Despair. Their final goal is to end The Tragedy and rebuild the world into one without hope or idealism, based in cold realism and a more "orderly" form of despair. To that end, they decided to start their own series of killing games to slowly eliminate hope in the world, with the "Neo Life of Mutual Killing"- the 80th Class's killing game- acting as a kind of test, thus making them the larger antagonists of the story.
----
* AxCrazy: Downplayed to an extent, but this is an organization who hunted down hopeful people/groups throughout the country and slaughtered them as well as putting together a killing game inspired by the Killing School Life.
* BadBoss: Kurosora zigzags this; while his interaction with Nanako in "Eyes and Ears" suggests he treats her harshly, he acts quite courteous and formal towards Agent 44 in "A Simple Plan". Aside from those two, it's unclear how he treats the rest of his subordinates, but considering five of Dark Hand's members committed suicide after helping to set up the explosive self-destruct sequence, he likely doesn't treat dissent well.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: The reason Kurosora left Ultimate Despair and formed Dark Hand was because he became disillusioned with how the group was using despair to simply create mindless/meaningless chaos and destruction.
* EvilVersusOblivion: Unlike Ultimate Despair, who wants to spread despair and destroy the world, Dark Hand seeks to rebuild the world into one built on realism/pragmatism and a more structured form of despair, and thus they strictly oppose Ultimate Despair's goals.
* GreaterScopeVillain: Dark Hand, as well as Kurosora himself, are the ones who truly orchestrated the story's killing game- Nanako, despite the mastermind, is nothing more than an extension of them.
* JackTheRipoff: Nanako accuses them of being this in the final trial, calling out how much they imitated and took from Ultimate Despair to create their own killing game, even going as far as to use the same mascot as the one used in the Killing School Life.
* NebulousEvilOrganization: They're a shady and secretive group with "dozens upon dozens" of members who go out and commit acts that destroy hope and cultivate despair, all in the name of ending The Tragedy and rebuilding society into a place devoid of hope.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: Their logo is depicted in black and red, and they're a terrorist organization and the true creators of the 80th Class's killing game.
* TheUnfought: Aside from Nanako (who was only a member in the loosest of terms) and Hana (who had her memories erased), the 80th Class never confronted or interacted with a member of Dark Hand throughout the story, least of all the group's leader.

A young and devoted agent working for Dark Hand, high-ranking and well-liked by the group's leader. They were the one who initially came up with the idea of Dark Hand starting its own killing game and played a massive role in helping to set everything up, including the capture of the 80th Class of Hope's Peak. They were supposed to be the mastermind of the killing game, but complications arose that prevented them from doing so, forcing Dark Hand to have to replace them.\
For tropes related to Agent 44's true identity, see Hana Amari's page.
----
* ADayInTheLimelight: The third Chapter ???, "A Simple Plan", is told from their perspective. Also, they're the main character of Fractured Fates as a whole.
* TheAce: It's implied they were one of Dark Hand's best underlings, and even Kurosora compliments their passion in the third Chapter ???.
* DespairEventHorizon: Considering Dark Hand's twisted morals in regards to hope and despair, it can be assumed Agent 44 reached this point to not only join the group but excel as a member.
* TheDragon: In regards to the killing game, they could be considered this for Dark Hand. It was Agent 44 who gave them the idea to make a killing game to begin with as well as creating the backup plan for what Dark Hand should do in case they became unable to oversee the killing game, ensuring the game would begin without any other issues.
* TheFaceless: Their face is never shown or described, save for their eyes. That said, it's played with when one remembers Agent 44's true identity as Hana, whose face is very much described.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Their eyes are described as being red, and they're a dangerous member of a terrorist group.
* WalkingSpoiler: It's difficult to discuss Agent 44 without mentioning that they're female. And a former Ultimate student. And a part of the 80th Class. And Hana.

Characters that appear in Fractured Fates, but either play minor roles in the plot or only appear in regards to a character's backstory/Free Time Events.
----
header: Hana Amari's Parents
Hana's mother and father. They appear in person during the Prologue to see their daughter off to Hope's Peak Academy, but after that they are merely mentioned by Hana herself on certain occasions or during Free Time Events.

----
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: Hana appears to imply this during one of her Free Time Events with Shiori.
* DotingParent: They're both extremely encouraging and supportive of Hana, even during the short time they're seen.
* GoodParents: From what little we see or hear of them, they seem to care about their daughter a lot, and Hana in turn visibly seems to love them just as much.
* IllFatedFlowerbed: Asuna's second Free Time Event describes how Mrs. Amari attempted to grow a garden- twice. Both attempts ended about as well as you'd expect.
* InvisibleParents: Actually downplayed, as they appear in person during the beginning of the story, but thus far that is their only physical appearance.
* SoProudOfYou: Their overall feeling towards Hana being accepted into Hope's Peak Academy, to the point where they give her the photo Mr. Amari took of the three of them because this is her day, and as such she deserves to have the photo to commemorate it.
* UnnamedParent: Their names have yet to be revealed, and they're only referred to as Hana's mom and dad or Mr./Mrs. Amari.
header: Hanzo and Syo Kunata
Itachi's father and uncle respectively, with the former being the previous head of the Kunata family. At some point several years prior to the start of the story, Hanzo became involved in a large-scale arms trafficking ring, ultimately leading to him being sent to prison and disgracing the Kunata name.

----
* BrokenPedestal: Hanzo serves as one for Itachi, as stated in his fourth Free Time Event and reinforced by Monokuma's story at the end of the second trial.
* CainAndAbel: Hanzo is the Cain to Syo's Abel, as he was the one involved in the arms smuggling ring while it's implied Syo had no involvement or knowledge of what his brother was doing. Downplayed in that neither brother tried to murder the other, though Hanzo did attempt to frame Syo for his crimes.
* DespairEventHorizon: Syo apparently fell into a deep depression following his brother's betrayal and subsequent destruction of the family's honor.
* Nephewism: It can be assumed Syo became Itachi's primary caretaker following Hanzo's imprisonment.
* SatelliteCharacter: Hanzo more than Syo serves as this, as it was his disgracing the family name that serve as Itachi's primary motivations in the fic.
* TheScapegoat: Syo was nearly made this for his brother Hanzo's crimes- ultimately, it didn't work.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Hanzo's actions are what directly motivate Itachi in the present, and are what later drive him to commit murder- in short, his treachery is what would lead to the deaths of his son and one of his classmates.
header: Yuna Tenmaru
Kaneki's little sister. She died in a tragic accident several years prior to the start of the story, and her death continues to affect Kaneki in the present.

----
* BigSisterWorship: According to Monokuma's story, Yuna loved and looked up to her older sister as much as Kaneki loved her.
* ChekhovsGunman: Kaneki briefly talks about her at one point during Chapter 2's Daily Life, but the bigger role she plays in Kaneki's backstory isn't revealed until after the trial.
* DeathByOriginStory: Downplayed; while it's implied her death had no effect on Kaneki becoming an Ultimate, it does still play a massive role in her past and, as a result, her actions during the story.
* DisneyVillainDeath: Inverted; Monokuma's story reveals Yuna died when she fell down a large dropoff, but she was far from a villain.
* PosthumousCharacter: She's been dead for several years prior to the events of the fic.
* SatelliteCharacter: Her entire purpose is to give Kaneki motivation for trying to save Asuna from being murdered in Chapter 2.
* TagalongKid: She used to tag along with her sister whenever she explored the wilderness around their neighborhood, a characteristic that would later contribute to her death. However, when Kaneki talks about this aspect of their childhood, she does so in a positive manner, indicating she enjoyed exploring with Yuna and never saw the younger girl's presence as a nuisance, making this trope a subversion if anything.
header: Shiori Sauchi's Parents
Shiori's parents, who are very high up in social status but place a lot of pressure on their daughter to live up to their high expectations.

----
* AbusiveParents: They are strongly implied to be this- mentally/emotionally, anyways.
* BlueBlood: Although it's not clear just how wealthy the two of them are, they are at least known to be high up in terms of social status.
* TheDreaded: They act as this for Shiori -- after all, they were the focus of her motive video in Chapter 4.
* Jerkass: If their treatment of their daughter wasn't enough of a clue, then the things they say in Shiori's motive video should be more than enough of an indication.
* Neat Freaks: Implied; when they're seen in Shiori's motive video, they're not wearing shoes as they have their feet placed on an expensive-looking carpet.
* Nepotism: Shiori works at the same hospital her father is the CEO of, so they do practice this; it's downplayed, however, in that their daughter is a genuinely skilled prodigy.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Shiori appears to take after her mom and dad in several physical aspects- to the point where Hana, when she and Hinata viewed Shiori's motive video during the fourth investigation, seemed to deduce they were Shiori's parents before the video even fully began.
* UnnamedParent: Their first names are not known.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: The mental stress they put Shiori through as well as the pressure to not tarnish the family is what would motivate her to try and commit a murder and graduate, ultimately leading to their daughter's death.
header: Kiragi Ashikawa
!!!Former Ultimate Doomsday Prepper
An alumni of Hope's Peak Academy who graduated years ago, Kiragi Ashikawa was a young man who became famous for creating elaborate methods of surviving various catastrophes and building numerous inventions and innovations that would also aid in survival. His true cause for fame, however, came when he was hired by the government to help build a massive and sophisticated bunker underground -- a bunker with a location that is unknown to the general public.

----
* Catchphrase: "Doom comes to all", acting as both a catchphrase and a signature of sorts on some of his bigger projects. It was because this phrase of his was found somewhere in the "castle" that allowed the students to figure out they were actually being held in a high-tech underground bunker designed by Ashikawa, not an actual castle.
* ChekhovsGunman: He is mentioned early on in Chapter 5 after the students find his signature phrase carved into the table in the North Wing's power room, but the (unintentional) role he played in the killing game as a whole isn't revealed until Chapter 6.
* CrazySurvivalist: His talent, Ultimate Doomsday Prepper, implies he was this to some extent.
* TheFaceless: Nothing about his appearance is known or described in the story.
* GadgeteerGenius: Implied with the fact that one of his skills was inventing things that would help people survive an apocalypse, not to mention the bunker he helped build is pretty advanced in terms of technology.
* PosthumousCharacter: He died in a plane crash several years prior to the story.
* RedHerring: Despite his signature/catchphrase being found in the castle, denoting that he was the one who primarily helped create it, Ashikawa is not at all involved in the killing game.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Though he's only mentioned a few times, he was the one who helped create the bunker that would go on to be used by Dark Hand for the Neo Life of Mutual Killing.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: He agreed to help build the so-called "castle"- actually a massive underground bunker- so it could be used to save people in the event of a world catastrophe. Unfortunately, it ends up being used to kill innocent teenagers.
header: Daisuke Watanabe
A regular architect who was hired by Kurosora to help repair the bunker built by Ashikawa; despite his misgivings about the man, he accepted the job in return for protection for his family. After finding out about the plans to start a killing game in the place he was helping to fix, however, he and a few Dark Hand traitors worked to secretly install a "self-destruct" system that would bring down the facility and put an end to any killing game that took place.

----
* ApocalypticLog: His journal acts as this, as he records the last few months of his life working on the bunker alongside the members of Dark Hand.
* DrivenToSuicide: He kills himself after installing the self-destruct sequence due to his horrible guilt at helping to start a brand new killing name and being unable to do anything more to stop it.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Although he and his journal are only revealed in Chapter 6, that journal would provide tons of useful information to Hana regarding the true nature and origins of the killing game as well as The Tragedy.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: He installed the timed bomb system to help someone else- likely a participant in the Neo Life- put a stop to the killing game by destroying the facility. Too bad that self-destruct system ended up falling into the hands of Nanako Tokumei, who proceeded to use it for the opposite of its intended use.
* UnwittingPawn: He had no idea he was essentially working for a terrorist group, let alone that they were plotting to create a new killing game in the location he was helping to renovate, until it was too late.
header: Hiroshi's Aunt
Hiroshi's aunt, who also works as a medical examiner and is a large influence on her nephew's life.

----
* TheCoroner: She works as one, much like her nephew.
* TheFaceless: She is never seen in-story, nor is her physical appearance ever described.
* Nephewism: Hiroshi claims in his Free Time Events that his aunt practically raised him, and it's not explained where his actual parents are.
* SatelliteCharacter: Aside from her occupation, very little of her character is established outside of Hiroshi's Free Time Events, and even then she's only really known as 'Hiroshi's aunt'.
header: Asuna's Mother
Asuna's mother, who runs a small botany business and taught her daughter everything she knows about gardening and botany.

----
* CaringGardener: Like mother, like daughter.
* GoodParents: Despite her ailing physical state, financial issues, and the nature of Asuna's birth, she does genuinely love her daughter.
* InvisibleParents: She is only mentioned a few times by Asuna in the story itself, and a few more times in more detail in her Free Time Events.
* SatelliteCharacter: The only role she plays in the story is being a part of Asuna's backstory and motivation for being an Ultimate.
* StrugglingSingleMother: Asuna's father is nowhere in the picture, so she's been on her own to provide for her child. However, her health issues combined with crushing medical debts because of said health issues do not make things easy for her.
* TragicDream: Her ultimate dream was to open up her own flower shop; however, the extensive costs of medical bills throughout her life made this goal unattainable, even with the botany business.
* UnnamedParent: Her first name is never revealed.
header: Shinya and Shigeki Koichi
Shiro's brothers and the older of the Koichi triplets, with Shinya being the oldest and Shigeki being the middle triplet.

----
* BigBrotherBully: Shigeki would often ridicule and bully Shiro for being physically 'weak'. On the other hand, Shinya is much kinder and accepting of Shiro and so averts this trope.
* TheConfidant: Shinya acts as one towards Shiro.
* JacobAndEsau: While it's unlikely their relationship with their mother was bad, Shiro mentions in his fourth Free Time Event that they were closer to their father than their mother.
* JerkJock: If his treatment of his younger brother is any indication, Shigeki could certainly qualify. On the other hand...
* LovableJock: Although his full personality isn't known, Shiro's descriptions of Shinya in his Free Time Events (even going as far as to explain how Hana and him are similar) make Shinya out to be this.
* SiblingYinYang: Shigeki seems to buy more into his father's traditional views on masculinity, resulting in him treating his youngest brother Shiro harshly. Shinya, meanwhile, is far more open-minded about Shiro's passions and is more willing to listen and defend him.
header: Shiro's Mother
Shiro's mother, who passed away when he and his brothers were six years old.

----
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: Shiro has nothing but kind things to say about her when he talks about her in his Free Time Events, mentioning that he was always closer with her than he was with his father. He's also quite certain she would have supported his passions in poetry if she had lived that long.
* IconicItem: According to Shiro, she had a favorite necklace that she wore quite often.
* PosthumousCharacter: She's been dead for many years by the time the story begins.
header: Sumiko
Azami's (former) childhood best friend, who cut ties with her several years ago to improve her own social status among their classmates.

----
* ChildhoodFriends: She and Azami met when they were kids and remained as friends for several years after that.
* CoolKidAndLoserFriendship: Sumiko was the more social and popular 'cool kid' to Azami's more withdrawn and awkward 'loser'. Deconstructed when Azami explains in her final Free Time Event that Sumiko really wanted to be one of the truly popular students at their junior high school, which she couldn't quite do if she remained friends with an unknown outcast like Azami.
* FleetingPassionateHobbies: She was interested in the occult and was the person who got Azami interested in the first place; although Azami remained interested, Sumiko herself eventually lost interest.
* OnlyFriend: She was this to Azami for many years before more or less abandoning her during junior high school.
* OnlyOneName: Only her first name, Sumiko, is known- her surname is never mentioned.
header: Tsukiko Miura
!!!Ultimate Street Racer
Ryoto's older sister. She had a passion for racing, specifically street racing, and was such a skilled racer that Hope's Peak scouted her as the Ultimate Street Racer.

----
* BadassDriver: Like her brother, she's a skilled racer, even gaining an Ultimate talent of her own.
* CoolBigSis: She was this to Ryoto, who still looks up to her in the present.
* DyingWish: Just before she went into emergency surgery (where she would later die), she told Ryoto not to let "the dream" die- which Ryoto took to mean racing and following their racer father's legacy.
* ExternalCombustion: What gets her killed; just before her last race, her two rivals secretly sabotaged her car, resulting in it blowing up with Tsukiko inside (presumably at the start of the race). It's played with, however, in that causing the car to ignite wasn't the rivals' plan- they were simply trying to make the car break down.
* JapaneseDelinquent: She didn't respect any adults (aside from her parents), lived "on the wild side" according to Ryoto, and partook in the illegal sport of street racing.
* PosthumousCharacter: She died about two years prior to the start of the story.
* VehicularSabotage: Was on the receiving end of this during her final race; Just before the race, the two rival racers she had challenged tampered with her car in order to make it break down and prevent Tsukiko from winning.
header:Genjiro Amano
An old friend of Akira's who was murdered by a local serial killer.

----
* ChildhoodFriends: He was this with Akira, which is why his death hit her so hard.
* CynicismCatalyst: He- or rather, his death and the case surrounding it- is what drove Akira to reject emotions and use logic and facts to solve problems, making her the cold and aloof young woman she is in the present.
* HeKnowsTooMuch: He was killed because he caught Enji Himoto/The Numazu Killer trying to break into his girlfriend's house, causing Himoto to kill him to keep him quiet.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: Akira states she saw him as a "reckless little brother", despite the two of them being the same age.
* SatelliteCharacter: His main purpose in the story is to give motivation behind Akira's cold, logic-driven behavior in the plot.
header:Masahiko Shimaru
!!!Former Ultimate Assistant
Tadao's father. He grew up poor and worked numerous jobs as a teenager to support his family, eventually gaining the job as the assistant to a powerful CEO, later becoming the Ultimate Assistant and then inheriting the company he worked for after graduating.

----
* AlmightyJanitor: He worked as a CEO's assistant, but was so hypercompetent at it that it earned him an Ultimate title. Bonus points for working as an actual janitor for the company before the CEO noticed him.
* GoodParents: Implied by the fact that Tadao speaks of him with nothing but praise and positivity.
* InvisibleParents: The only time he's mentioned is during Tadao's Free Time Events.
* NonIdleRich: Despite being the owner of a massive company now, it can be assumed he still works hard to see it prosper, as the idea of working hard for success is something he taught his son for years.
* RagsToRiches: He was born to a family that was dirt-poor and worked as hard as he could for years to make a better life for himself. Ultimately, he would become the assistant of a company's CEO and gain an Ultimate talent, and after graduating the CEO saw him as a worthy enough successor to give the company over to Masahiko after his passing. And even after inheriting the company, he still worked hard to make the company grow and prosper even more, thus making him the rich and powerful man he is today.
* SelfMadeMan: He started out with next to nothing, but through hard work he was able to become an Ultimate and inherit an entire company, becoming incredible wealthy and successful as a result.
header: Yoshikage Yonade
Hinata's father, a famed museum thief who went by the moniker "Kage Ken". He was known for pulling off more elaborate and challenging heists until his luck ran out and he was imprisoned when Hinata was thirteen.

----
* AlliterativeName: Yoshikage Yonade.
** Also his nickname: Kage Ken.
* ChallengeSeeker: He had a desire to pull off more challenging heists than the last- which is implied to have led to his downfall/capture.
* DisappearedDad: Serves as this for Hinata due to being in jail for his crimes- and even before his arrest, Hinata claims he wasn't around too often anyways, so it is both justified and downplayed.
* IHaveManyNames: Yoshikage Yonade, "Kage Ken", "The Gentleman Thief", "The Shifter", "The Ghost of Japan"...
* InvisibleParents: He is only really mentioned in Hinata's Free Time Events.
* PassingTheTorch: He trains his son in the ways of thieving so he may one day carry on Kage Ken's legacy...despite Hinata not actually having a desire to do so.
* PhantomThief: A much straighter example than his son; Yoshikage would often target priceless artifacts for his heists, stole for reasons beyond personal gain, often used disguises (according to Hinata), and had a gentleman-like nature to him (again, implied by Hinata).
** In fact, Hinata states that he actually was a "true phantom thief".
* SatelliteCharacter: Aside from his PhantomThief tendencies, not much else is known about him besides the fact that he is Hinata's dad.
