Earth Land is often filled with criminals of all kinds, most of which include wizards.

!!Lyon's Faction

Galuna Island harbors a cult of wizards, most of whom are Lamia Scale defectors. Led by "Reitei"Sub-Zero Emperor Lyon Vastia with Sherry, Yûka, and Toby as his subordinates, their goal is to unseal the demon Deliora so that Lyon can slay it himself. Once the faction realizes the error of their ways, they rejoin Lamia Scale with Lyon as its newest member.

* AllForNothing: Three years of attempting to revive Deliora was rendered completely moot when it was discovered that Ur actually killed the demon. And as Zalty pointed out Lyon never had a chance at actually beating Deliora to begin with.
* AntiVillain: Sherry, Yûka, and Toby lost their families to Deliora, and joined Lyon to resurrect the demon just so he could kill it in revenge, uncaring of the suffering their actions inflicted on the villagers of Galuna Island. They straighten out their act afterwards, however.
* CanisLatinicus: Their Moon Drip chant consists of ominous, foreign-sounding jibberish.
* EasilyForgiven: Fairy Tail forgives Lyon and his former QuirkyMinibossSquad for what they did following the Oración Seis's demise.
* FreudianExcuse: Lyon's QuirkyMinibossSquad lost their families to Deliora, and help Lyon release the demon so he can kill it and avenge them.
* HeelFaceTurn: Although Lyon, Sherry, Yûka, and Toby serve as antagonists on Galuna Island, they clean up their act in the end once they are freed of their obsession.
* HeelRealization: In the anime, Sherry and Yûka apologize to the villagers and acknowledge they'd become as bad as Deliora in trying to kill them.
* MustMakeAmends: In the anime, Sherry and Yûka return to the village for "payback" after Lyon's plans have been undermined. When Erza takes them out, they reveal they came so the villagers to get payback against them for causing years of suffering on their island.
* QuirkyMinibossSquad: Sherry, Yûka, and Toby serve as Lyon's minions on Galuna Island.
* RevengeBeforeReason: They've become so consumed with hatred for Deliora that they're willing to kill innocent villagers just for their vague resemblance to the demon.
* ThoseWhoFightMonsters: Lyon and his QuirkyMinibossSquad have no qualms with killing the demon villagers of Galuna Island for their resemblance to Deliora, even when they're believed to be humans stuck in the forms of demons.
* UnwittingPawn: They do not realize that Zalty/Ultear is going to hijack their scheme and take control of Deliora until it's far too late.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Sherry, Yûka, and Toby defect from Lamia Scale so they can help Lyon defeat Deliora and avenge their families' deaths, but they cross the line by trying to kill the villagers on Galuna Island for their demonic appearance, and for hiring Fairy Tail to stop them.

A mysterious masked wizard who cooperates with Lyon in trying to revive Deliora. Unknown to Lyon's faction, he's actually Ultear Milkovich in disguise, who seeks to use Deliora to fulfill her own ends.

->For info on Ultear herself, see her entry on the Crime Sorcière page.
----
* AntiClimacticUnmasking: A Trope example. He takes off his mask to reveal a fairly unremarkable old guy's face. This is before his entire body transfigures into that of a young woman who happens to be one of the series' most prominent recurring characters.
* CoolMask: He hides his face behind a tribal mask. However, it's completely superficial seeing how the face behind it is simply transformed.
* GenericDoomsdayVillain: Hangingd by Natsu, who is sorely let down by the fact that he's just another villain who wants power for the sake of it. It's eventually Trope when we find out who Zalty really is and what "his" reasons are.
* TheStarscream: He feigns loyalty to Lyon just to seize control of Deliora for himself once their Moon Drip ritual is complete.
* SueDonym: A unique case that's exclusive to the name's Japanese spelling, Zaruti, which is similar to that of "Ultear", Urutia. The only differences are the katakana "za" (ザ), which looks somewhat similar to the kana "u" (ウ), and the dropped "a" kana at the end.
* SweetPollyOliver: "He" is in fact Ultear, who shapeshifted into an old man in a bid to take control of Deliora. Natsu comes close to figuring out the truth when he catches a whiff of him wearing women's perfume, but comes to the EntertaininglyWrong conclusion that he's actually a male-to-female transexual.
* TimeMaster: He uses the Arc of Time, which lets him reverse the state of time of any non-human object.

A giant rat owned by Sherry, serving as her mount and companion on Galuna Island.
----
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: After Galuna Island she never appears again or recives any mention.
* GiantFlyer: She can spin her tail to fly despite her gargantuan size, giving Sherry and her team a convenient means of getting around the island.
* LoyalAnimalCompanion: She follows Sherry's every command, even if it means slaughtering a village of innocents.
* RodentsOfUnusualSize: A 50-foot-tall flying rat.
* TeamPet: Serves as this for Lyon's cult on Galuna Island.

----
!!Tower of Heaven

The Tower of Heaven is a structure built by a cult of evil wizards to resurrect the black wizard Zeref. It is in this godforsaken place where Erza met several of her friends, including Jellal.

* AllForNothing: The cult's years of labor and kidnapping children for the sake of bringing Zeref BackFromTheDead are revealed to be all for naught when Ultear gloats behind Jellal's back that Zeref never died to begin with.
* AssholeVictim: While a young Jellal killing them with a sadistic grin shows signs of something being wrong with him, it be hard to find anyone who would shed tears for the two cultists that tortured him and his friends.
* ChildhoodFriends: Erza met Jellal and all her other friends (Shô, Simon, Wally, and Millianna) in this place.
* DirtyCoward: During Erza’s rebellion the two cultists pleaded for mercy, despite the fact that they not only tortured her and made her lose one of her eyes, but they were torturing Jellal who rescued her before.
* EvilFormerFriend: Jellal and the rest of Erza's old gang were once the closest thing she had to a family before joining Fairy Tail. Eight years later, they kidnap and attempt to sacrifice her to resurrect Zeref.
* FatAndSkinny: Before Jellal rose to power, the tower was run by a fat and skinny pair of Zeref cultists--named Buli and Gali in the anime credits--until they were brutally murdered by Jellal.
* HeelFaceTurn: All of them (except Simon, who was GoodAllAlong) end up turning to Fairy Tail's side as Jellal's manipulations come to light.
* MadeASlave: Everyone at the tower who isn't a part of the cult that runs it was subject to this. A fair number of characters such as Jellal, Erza, their friends, and Oración Seis were actually kids when they worked here.
* MoreThanMindControl: Jellal quite easily turns Erza's friends against her by sending her away and telling everyone else she ditched them after she went DrunkWithPower and tried leading them into a trap. He kept feeding them lies for the next eight years to ensure they remained faithful to him. The English dub tweaks things further by saying he used a spell to keep them from questioning him, but only after tricking them all the same (Simon resisted thanks to the PowerOfTrust).
* NonIndicativeName: The "Tower of Heaven" (Rakuen no Touliterally "Tower of Paradise") is anything but: it's a hellish nightmare of a place run by people who think they'll be creating their own "heaven" by resurrecting Zeref.
* OneDegreeOfSeparation: Not only did Erza, Jellal, and their friends originate from the Tower of Heaven, but so did Oración Seis (Brain was Jellal's EvilMentor, while the rest were all child laborers). There are also a few other characters who are related to them: Wally and Hoteye/Richard are brothers, Simon is the older brother of Mermaid Heel's Kagura, and Angel/Sorano is the long-lost sister of Saber Tooth's Yukino.
* QuirkyMinibossSquad: Everyone besides Jellal serves as his in the Tower of Heaven arc.
* SlaveryIsASpecialKindOfEvil: As a cult that slaughtered innocent people and enslaved children hoping to sacrifice them to resurrect an ancient and evil wizard, they are definitely very evil people.
* UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans: They worship Zeref as a DarkMessiah who will create a paradise just for them by wiping out the entire world.
* WouldHurtAChild: They definitely enjoy torturing their child slaves as Erza, Jellal, and the rest of their childhood friends can testify.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: A number of the slaves, including Erza's TrueCompanions, are understandably messed up due to years of living in fear of torture and death, especially considering a number of them were child slaves.

A young man who views Erza as his older sister. He uses a form of Card Magic capable of sealing people within them.
----
* AnimeHair: He has spiky blond hair.
* BackForTheFinale: He's among one of the countless wizards in the ContinuityCavalcade who lends his magic to power Lucy's Fairy Sphere and seal Acnologia.
* BigSisterWorship: He's not related to Erza by blood, but he is nonetheless inspired by her incredible display of power and leadership during their original insurrection, and always refers to her as "Nee-san".
* CardsOfPower: His cards contain pocket dimensions that he can trap other people inside.
* ChekhovsSkill: He teaches his card sealing spell to Cana off-screen, which comes in handy in the Tartaros arc when she needs to perform a last-second rescue on her guild.
* CorruptTheCutie: Years of being spoon-fed Jellal's lies have twisted his personality more than the rest of the children, to the point where Erza can hardly recognize him as the bright and sunny boy he used to be. While he gradually returns to his old, friendly self after learning the truth, he is left emotionally unstable and willing to kill Jellal for manipulating him and the others for a decade.
* DeathDealer: Shô's magic involves the use of cards, either as prison dimensions or projectiles. He is also fittingly introduced while disguised as a casino dealer.
* DeclarationOfProtection: Once he has his HeelRealization, his top priority becomes keeping Erza safe, even going so far as to trap her in a card to ensure it.
* FacialMarkings: Has a snake-shaped tattoo on the left side of his chin.
* HeIsAllGrownUp: According to the Tartaros arc, Cana reportedly had a fling with a "hot tanned guy" who could use Card Magic.
* HeelRealization: After hearing Erza's side of Jellal's story about her "betrayal", and getting confirmation from Simon soon after, he is absolutely distraught to realize that he and the others were the ones who betrayed Erza.
* IllKillYou: He becomes frothing with rage when he learns Jellal has been tricking him and runs off to kill him himself.
* MoodSwinger: In the span of a single scene, he goes from glaring darkly at Erza for leaving them for dead at the Tower of Heaven, to warmly complimenting her lovely dress, to crying and hugging his dearly missed sister figure for the first time in eight years, to roaring furiously at her for "betraying" Jellal.
* NoodleIncident: Apparently crossed paths with Cana somepoint offscreen and taught her his Card Conversion spell. Whether this was before or after the timeskip is not clarified.
* PutOnABus: He sets out to travel the world with Wally and Millianna after finally getting free of the tower and Jellal.
* TearsOfRemorse: He completely breaks down in tears when he finds out Erza didn't truly betray him, asking himself how he couldn't believe in her as Simon could.
* TheTransmogrifier: He can effectively turn people into cards by trapping them inside his magic cards.

A man with a deformed face who harbors feelings for Erza. He can shroud entire areas in pitch-black darkness with his magic, Dark Moment. He is also the older brother of Kagura Mikazuchi, the ace of Mermaid Heel.
----
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: In the manga, his appearance is more brutish and his upper teeth could usually be seen over his metal jaw early on. The anime changed this (as well as his child appearance) into a more "scarred Bishonen" type appearance.
* BigDamnHeroes: He's the only one apart from Natsu, Erza, and Jellal still in the Tower of Heaven during the battle, allowing him to step in and save the heroes from a crazed Jellal's onslaught. Unfortunately, this ends up killing him.
* BlemishedBeauty: ZigZagged as in the manga, his appearance is more brutish and his upper teeth could usually be seen over his metal jaw making him closer to FacialHorror early on before getting more attractive later. In the anime, however, Simon got AdaptationalAttractiveness which gave him a more scarred bishonen type look, which made him more attractive from the start in spite of the injuries to his face.
* CastingAShadow: His Dark Moment spell shrouds the entire area in pitch-black darkness. He also has night vision enabling him to see in the dark.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: He has been in love with Erza since they were kids. Unfortunately, Erza had feelings for Jellal around the same time, and Simon knows it.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Simon uses Darkness Magic, yet turns out to have been GoodAllAlong and is the first to switch to Fairy Tail's side.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: He dies in Erza's arms after shielding her from Jellal's Altairis spell.
* DubNameChange: His name is pronounced as "SEE-mon" in Japanese, though the Funimation dub calls him "SAI-mun".
* DyingDeclarationOfLove: Subverted in that he never openly confesses to Erza, and instead just thinks it to himself as he dies. However, his manner of death tells Erza volumes of how he truly felt.
* EarlyInstallmentCharacterDesignDifference: His early appearances in the manga gives him a heavily disfigured, terrifying visage. Once he's revealed to have been GoodAllAlong, however, his design shifts into something more friendly and appealing.
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: All his friends knew about his crush on Erza, and encouraged him to confess. Tragically, he never had the opportunity.
* EyepatchOfPower: He lost his left eye during the slaves' revolt in his childhood. As an adult, he wears an eyepatch to hide the injury.
* FaceOfAThug: He is the scariest-looking of the group, but his role as a villain is only skin-deep as he's secretly on Fairy Tail's side long before the series even starts.
* FacialHorror: Simon lost an eye and the lower half of his jaw during the slave revolt. This is toned down significantly in the anime, but the manga clearly shows that he has that metal jaw for a reason.
* GentleGiant: Despite being absolutely massive, he is a kind soul who only uses his bulk to shield others.
* GoodAllAlong: After initially appearing to be one of Jellal's toadies, he reveals himself to be the only one of Erza's friends who never believed Jellal's lies of her betrayal, and merely faked being on Jellal's side to find a way to stop him. This also allows him to convince Shô to pull a HeelFaceTurn, and he tells the others the truth after they try to kill Natsu themselves.
* GoOutWithASmile: He does his best to keep up a smile to Erza before succumbing to his wounds and dying from Jellal's attack. Later, his Historia smiles proudly at his sister after she cuts him down.
* HeroicSacrifice: He shields Erza and Natsu from Jellal, sending Erza into a HeroicBSOD and Natsu into an UnstoppableRage that ends with Jellal beaten once and for all.
* InterruptedDeclarationOfLove: He tries confessing to Erza during the slave revolt. He gets blasted in the face while doing it.
* KilledOffForReal: He is notable for being the very first character to be definitively killed on-screen outside of flashbacks. His appearance as a Historia in the Alvarez Empire arc only serves to confirm his death.
* TheMole: During his team's kidnapping operation of Erza, Simon spares Gray and allows Fairy Tail to come to the Tower of Heaven's doorstep to help defeat Jellal.
* SacrificialLion: He's one of the more prominent and developed characters introduced in the Tower of Heaven arc, and is the first character in the series to actually be killed by an ArcVillain.
* TakingTheBullet: He dies after shielding Erza and Natsu from Jellal's Altairis attack.
* Telepathy: Simon can communicate telepathically over distances through this.
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: He is the kindest of Erza's friends, and his little sister, Kagura, thinks the world of him. His death at Jellal's hands causes them to develop a grudge against Jellal that persists for over seven years.

A gunslinging man who uses Polygon Magic to separate his angular body into blocks. He talks, dresses, and acts like a 1920's gangster, as a gangster movie was the first thing he saw when he and the other slaves were freed.
----
* AccentAdaptation: He has a Bronx accent in the English dub to compliment his gangster-like appearance.
* ArmCannon: The anime switches out his revolver in the manga with the ability to shapeshift his arm into a gun.
* BackForTheFinale: He's among one of the countless wizards in the ContinuityCavalcade who lends his magic to power Lucy's Fairy Sphere and seal Acnologia.
* BadassInANiceSuit: He wears a sharp suit to match his ideal of a gangster.
* CatchPhrase: "Dandy."
* DetachmentCombat: His magic allows him to split up his body into blocks and launch them at enemies as projectiles.
* Fanboy: Ever since he saw a gangster movie lacrima as a child, he's been deeply obsessed with gangsters and modeled himself after the film's star.
* FatAndSkinny: He's the smaller and lankier sibling compared to the massive and bulky Richard/Hoteye.
* TheGunslinger: He carries a hand rifle in the manga, and an ArmCannon in the anime, as his preferred method of elimination.
* TheNicknamer: He calls Natsu "boy" quite often.
* NoSocialSkills: He doesn't seem to know much about the real world besides what he has seen in movies. He also doesn't understand why a man got angry at Millianna for taking one of his food on a stick without paying.
* PowerUpgradingDeformation: Learning magic that lets him split his body up into blocks also gave him a permanently block-like appearance.
* RedBaron: He likes to call himself "Mad Dog" Wally.
* SinisterShades: His ensemble as a kickass gangster wouldn't be complete without them. Notably, they're broken around the same time
* UncannyFamilyResemblance: His angular PowerUpgradingDeformation is extremely similar to Hoteye's, an early indicator that the two are brothers.

----
!!Avatar

Avatar is a cult of black wizards that fills the void left after the Balam Alliance's defeat. They worship Zeref as their god, and seek to force every other wizard in Earth-land to do the same.

* BigBadWannabe: This is their whole deal. For all their buildup and ambitions of suceeding the Balam Alliance, they're taken out very quickly by Fairy Tail and utterly fail to acomplish anything noteworthy.
* BlackMagic: The cult's top members each practice in a form of black magic, though how it differs from other forms of magic isn't quite established, except that their spells have particularly nasty effects.
* Catchphrase: "Zeref's will be done."
* CreepyCathedral: This serves as their base of operations, fitting for a cult of black wizards.
* Cult: They revere Zeref as a god, and devote their lives to the practice of BlackMagic.
* CurbStompBattle: On the receiving end of it by their final battle with Fairy Tail's strongest team, who decimate them without so much as a single scratch on them.
* DecapitatedArmy: After Ikusa-Tsunagi falls and the Avatar army starts to retreat, D-6 attempts to rally what's left of them with Able, but once Panther Lily knocks him out, Avatar's defeat is completed.
* DramaticallyMissingThePoint: They perform their "purification ritual"--i.e., the massacre of 30,000 people--under the belief that Zeref is attracted to concentrated deaths. They fail to realize that their line of reasoning is backwards: Zeref doesn't appear because of a large number of deaths; a large number of deaths occur because of Zeref's appearance.
* EvilPlan: Their plan, "Operation Purify", involves wiping out the entire town of Malva to attract Zeref's attention. Little do Alok's followers know is that they are the real sacrifices.
* EvilPowerVacuum: When the Balam Alliance is taken down, Avatar takes over in their place.
* MassOhCrap: Their general reaction when Fairy Tail's strongest team returns and starts mowing down their numbers.
* MeaningfulName: In Hinduism, an avatar is a deliberate descent of a deity to Earth, or a descent of the Supreme Being and is mostly translated into English as "incarnation", but more accurately as "appearance" or "manifestation".
* Mooks: Like the dark guilds before them, they have a large number of flunkies at their disposal to act as Fairy Tail battle fodder.
* NotWhatISignedUpFor: Alok never told his other members that his plan banked on them being defeated so that he can unleash a war god and sacrifice them to it. Needless to say, they're utterly horrified once they find out.
* PutOnAPrisonBus: After Fairy Tail thwarts their plans, the Avatar wizards are taken into Magic Council custody, never to be seen or heard from again.
* ReligionOfEvil: Avatar worships Zeref as a living deity, much like Tartaros and Grimoire Heart.
* TheMole: Avatar suspects one of its members to be leaking information to the Magic Council. It turns out there are actually two moles: Levy is the Council member in question, masquerading as a rank-and-file cultist; Gray, who infiltrated the cult's inner circle, has his own separate agenda with Erza.
* TemptingFate: They're confident that their numbers of 2,000 or so members are more than enough to stop Natsu's little band. They realize only too late that plowing through waves of enemies is their thing.
* WantedPoster: They have their own wanted poster with a high amount of Jewels.
* TheWorfEffect: They're built up as the next big threat on the face of Ishgal after the Balam Alliance (Oración Seis, Grimoire Heart and Tartaros). However, Fairy Tail had spent so much time training after their costly victory against Tartaros that by the time they appear, their threat is a complete non-factor, giving them an easy victory before the Alvarez Empire shows up.

The high priest of Avatar, who hides a scarred face behind a metal mask. He concocts a plan for a certain ritual to "purify" the world on behalf of Zeref. His Black Magic produces solid barriers only the mightiest of wizards can break.
----
* AllAccordingToPlan: He saw the defeat of his cult's members long beforehand. That's because he never intended anyone, even his fellow cultists, to survive anyway.
* AllForNothing: Alok burnt his face and amassed countless followers as a sacrifice to gain the ability to summon Ikusa-Tsunagi, a WarGod who towers over mountains. Too bad for him, Ikusa-Tsunagi is killed by Natsu with a Fire Dragon King's Demolition Fist.
* ArcVillain: He serves as one in the Avatar arc, where he tries slaughtering countless people in a ritual he (wrongly) believes would appease Zeref.
* BadBoss: He offers up his own followers as sacrifices to Ikusa-Tsunagi without their know-how or consent, all out of his devotion to Zeref.
* BadassCape: One that covers his entire body.
* BadassPreacher: He exudes this in spades with the intimidating calm he shows while commanding his troops. He's also the most powerful member of Avatar by far, but that isn't saying much.
* BarrierWarrior: His specialty in magic is creating barriers that can stop anything in their tracks...at least before Natsu comes along.
* BeamSpam: He can fire bolts of magic energy that, when combined with his barriers, allow him to blast his foes from behind safety as his own magic will pass through the walls without issue.
* BigBadWannabe: With the dissolution of the Balam Alliance, he's set up as the leader of the next biggest threat Earth-land has faced behind Zeref and Acnologia. He goes down faster than Fairy Tail's earliest villains.
* CoolMask: He covers his entire face with an iron mask.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: He's so blindly devoted to his cause that he scoffs at things like friendship and family values.
* FacialHorror: He wears a mask to hide the fact that he burned the skin off of his face as his price for summoning Ikusa-Tsunagi. We only get a glimpse of his scarred visage when Natsu cracks it.
* GenericDoomsdayVillain: He serves no role beyond being the baddie that gets Fairy Tail's strongest team back together.
* MagicStaff: He holds a staff with an eye with wings on it, which he uses to make his barriers and fire bolts of energy.
* SlasherSmile: Once his mask is damaged, he sports one of these while Ikusa-Tsunagi slaughters his own men.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Funimation alternatively spells his name as "Arlock".
* TheStoic: He's mostly unfazed by his soldiers' defeat, mainly because it was AllAccordingToPlan. Seeing Ikusa-Tsunagi go down with two power punches from Natsu...not so much.
* SummonMagic: He uses the same magic as Minerva that allows the summoning of gods, though his is on a much higher tier as it involves human sacrifice.
* SuperToughness: To his credit, he's pretty tough; getting hit with a Fire Dragon's Fist to the face just destroys his mask and knocks him down. The hill he and Natsu were standing on when the attack landed took more damage in the resulting explosion.
* ThisCannotBe: He can do little more than stare in silent shock as Natsu destroys Ikusa-Tsunagi, a seemingly indestructible war god the size of a mountain.
* TinTyrant: Aside from his BadassCape, he's decked out in a suit of armor that obscures his entire body from sight.
* VaderBreath: His breathing can be seen in the form of clouds that exit his mask's mouthpiece.

* BlackSwordsAreBetter: His Shade Sword has a black blade that corrodes anything it touches.
* TheComicallySerious: Despite his serious disposition, he admires the tacky nicknames Briar gives him.
* CoolSword: His Shade Sword is a two-handed dark sword and a huge, round guard covered in belts, and it emits a corrosive dark mist when swung.
* DubNameChange: The official manga translation calls his weapon both the "Dark Sword" and the "Shade Sword".
* InformedAbility: He's supposed to be a MasterSwordsman, and what little he gets to show off does hint he has skill with the blade. Then he fights Erza, and she proves who the real MasterSwordsman between them is.
* MakeThemRot: His sword has this effect on whatever it touches, causing Erza's swords to crumble.

* RedBaron: "Shade Sword" Jerome, so named for his sword.
* RightForTheWrongReasons: He suspects Gray of being TheMole working for the Council, despite how it appears that has been completely corrupted by his Demon Slayer Magic. 322* SarcasmBlind: He accepts and appreciates the nicknames Briar gives him, not realizing that she does it in poor taste.
* TooManyBelts: It's actually his sword that's covered in belts.

* TheComicallySerious: Her seriousness is undermined by the silly nicknames she gives her comrades.
* EtTuBrute: Briar feels betrayed and lied to when Gray reveals himself to be TheMole, owing to her VillainousCrush to him.
* TheGadfly: It's implied that she gives others nicknames to get under their skin, which displeases her when Jerome wholeheartedly accepts the names she gives him, forcing her to come up with new ones.
* GiverOfLameNames: Tends to give weird nicknames to her teammates: Jerome is "Scruffy" and "Eyelashes"; Mary is "Venomous Woman"; and Gray is "Ice", "Striptease" and, after his TheMole status is revealed, "Gray Sewer Rat".
* KiManipulation: She can create blasts of explosive shockwaves through the ground to attack.
* LiteralSplitPersonality: Each of her copies embodies a different facet of her personality: Fury, who is angered by Gray's betrayal; Laughter, who is amused by his confidence that Fairy Tail can beat Avatar; Sorrow, who is saddened that she has to kill him; and Love, who has feelings for him.
* SelfDuplication: Her Splitting Magic creates four clones who embody fury, laughter, sorrow, and love.
* TheStoic: She holds a serious expression most of the time, and her anger is generally restrained even when she finds out Gray was TheMole.
* Stripperiffic: She's pretty scantily clad. Her top is just a band of cloth tied together at the front, and around her waist she wears a black loincloth that leaves her legs exposed.

A cheery, sharp-tongued girl whose magic, Virus, instantly afflicts her victims with deadly diseases.
----
* AnimalEaredHeadband: Wears a headband shaped like cat ears.
* BondVillainStupidity: She claims she can kill her enemies instantly by infecting their brain, but she would rather torture and humiliate them by targeting their digestive tracts, giving Wendy ample time to immunize her friends from Mary's attacks.
* CuteAndPsycho: She has the most bizarrely cheerful expression on her face as she gives Lucy a nasty stomach virus.
* DoNotTauntCthulhu: After taunting and demeaning Fairy Tail for their perceived weakness, Lucy one-shots her with a punch to the gut.
* EtTuBrute: This is how she reacts when she realizes that Alok never intended for her or anyone else in the cult to survive Operation Purify.
* ExoticEyeDesigns: Her eyes are gold and have diamond-shaped pupils.
* LaserGuidedKarma: She loves to target Lucy's stomach to see her writhe in agony. When they face off a second time, Lucy repays her in kind by delivering a Taurus-enhanced Lucy Punch to her gut, making her keel over just like Lucy.
* LeetLingo: She peppers a few of her sentences with Internet slang words in Japanese, like "niko" (smile) and "warai" (LOL).
* LogicalWeakness: Her affliction magic amounts to jack squat in the face of Wendy's sky magic.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: Her name is shared with Mary Mallon, better known as Typhoid Mary, an infamously asymptomatic carrier of typhoid fever believed to have unintentionally infected fifty-one people (killing three of them), despite showing no outward signs of illness.
* PerkyFemaleMinion: She's the most chipper and comical of all the Avatar members.
* Plaguemaster: Her magic infects nearby foes with viruses. She favors torturing her victims by attacking the digestive tract, but she can also lethally target the brain when she wants to kill someone.
* PstandardPsychicPstance: She touches her temple with her index and middle fingers to psychically infect her targets.

* SupernaturalGoldEyes: Her eyes are gold, reinforcing her cat motif with her diamond-shaped pupils.
* SuperpowerLottery: Her Virus magic allows her to very easily accomplish an OneHitKill. It's her decision not to that leads to her downfall.
* TearsOfFear: She's left quivering in fear after Natsu proves himself powerful enough to completely obliterate a war god the size of a mountain.
* TemptingFate: Every chance she gets, she just loves to bring up how weak Fairy Tail must have been to fall apart despite being so popular. Not one minute after she makes that statement to Lucy, Mary gets a beefed-up punch to the stomach from her.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: She assumes Fairy Tail disbanded because they were weak, and spends quite a bit of time mocking them for it. Unfortunately for her, the guild wipes out their entire cult and a WarGod in front of her eyes.

* Fanboy: InUniverse, of Zeref. He says that his choice of outfit is actually cosplaying as Zeref, and he thinks the kanji on his forehead spells Zeref's name (it doesn't). In the anime, he also imagines Zeref with BishieSparkles while fawning over him.
* HarmlessFreezing: Gray subjects him to this as he's about to chop Lucy in half with an ax, revealing that his loyalties still lie with Fairy Tail.
* MindOverMatter: His magic allows him to telekinetically control torture devices.
* PungeonMaster: He tends to make bad tea-related puns.
* PuppyDogEyes: He has big, blue, totally un-intimidating eyes when he opens them.

* ItAmusedMe: He claims that he doesn't care what Avatar does so long as he gets to have fun.
* MeaningfulName: His name is almost certainly a reference to the biblical CainAndAbel, seeing how his doll was previously owned by Kain Hikaru.
* MonsterClown: The makeup he wears resembles a clown, and he certainly didn't join a cult worshiping Zeref to do good things.

* AdaptationalHeroism: Trope. In the manga, he's a slaver who uses charms to lure unsuspecting women into his clutches and tries branding Lucy with a scorching hot iron. 463* ConfrontingYourImpostor: He winds up in this situation with Natsu, who Bora doesn't realize is the real Salamander. All Natsu has to do is ask him up-front if he's a member of Fairy Tail for Bora to blow his cover.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: In the anime, he comes to admire Natsu after getting pummeled by him, calling him "Aniki"literally meaning "Big Brother", but also used to signify admiration.
* HeelFaceTurn: In the anime, he straightens up his act after being defeated. He goes on to act relatively chummy with Fairy Tail by wishing them luck before they put on a play, and appearing during their annual Fantasia parade as a spectator.
* Jerkass:

* PlayingWithFire: He's a fire wizard, which makes it easy for him to pose as Salamander, who is named after a fire dragon. Consequently, it also means he has no way to actually harm Natsu due to Natsu's Dragon Slayer Magic allowing him to consume his attacks.

He uses Diver Magic to dig through the ground and is also a celestial wizard contracted with Virgo, who assumes the form of a giant "gorilla" woman to satisfy his warped sense of beauty until she sides with Lucy.
----
* ArcVillain: The main antagonist of the Daybreak arc, where Natsu and Lucy take a job to burn the titular book he has in his possession. Too bad he's not willing to give it away that easily.
* AristocratsAreEvil: He apparently went through some shady business dealings to amass his fortune. Then there's the fact that he abused his power to blackmail an author into licking his boots.
* CollectorOfTheStrange: He hires maids he deems to be extremely beautiful, which Gonk varies from most everybody else's. He also coerced an author into writing a book with himself as the main character so he could own a one-of-a-kind book.

* FastTunnelling: His Diver magic allows him to tunnel in and out of solid concrete like liquid.
* GoodIsBadAndBadIsGood: Rather, ugliness is beauty and beauty is ugliness. Not only are his "beautiful" maids textbook examples of Gonk, but he and his maids consider Lucy to be ugly because she matches more traditional ideals of attractiveness.
* Gonk: He is best described as an ugly mole-man with a mustache grown from his nostril hair.
* Greed: His first conclusion upon learning the secret Daybreak contains is a map to Kemu Zaleon's hidden treasure.
* IdenticalGrandson: In the manga, it's implied that he's a descendant of the knight who first gave Mavis the title of "Fairy Tactician" during the Second Caravan Trade War, who looks exactly like Everlue and shares the same VerbalTic.
* ItsAllAboutMe: He commissioned a book to be written all about him just to stroke his own over-inflated ego. Then, when Lucy reveals that the book's incoherent story is a total rearrangement of its true content, Everlue immediately assumes the real story must be a complete hatchet job aimed at him.
* Jerkass: He calls Lucy "ugly" without batting an eye.
* LackOfEmpathy: He doesn't care one bit about how he ruined Kemu Zaleon's life as long as he got what he wanted in the end, even if it was something he himself despised.
* PutOnAPrisonBus: He's eventually arrested off-screen once Lucy defeats him.
* SmallNameBigEgo: He prattles on and on about how rich, powerful and important he is, yet his influence doesn't extend much farther outside a single town.
* SummonMagic: He surprises Lucy by revealing he can use the same magic as her, summoning his "gorilla maid" Virgo on her.
* VerbalTic: "Boyoyo!"
* VillainousBreakdown: He flips his lid wondering what the secret hidden within Daybreak must be, fearing that it might actually be an exposé on his underhanded business dealings.
* VillainyFreeVillain: Subverted. In the manga, Lucy has to point out to Natsu and Happy that even though Everlue is an unpleasant Jerkass, he hasn't done anything illegal, either. But then she changes her tune when discovers the inhumane things he did just to get his hands on a book he didn't like, calling him an "enemy of literature". 516* AscendedExtra: Just mentioned in the manga, but makes a proper appearance as a far more fleshed out character in one of the anime's Filler episodes.
* BackForTheFinale: In the anime, he's seen lending his magic to power Lucy's Fairy Sphere in the ContinuityCavalcade.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: He was allowed to be Aceto's "playmate" when they were kids, which led to him developing feelings for her. When they meet face to face years later, they become engaged.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: He worked as a servant of the Balsamico family, but turned to a life of crime after getting chased away by his true love's overprotective father.
* DiscoDan: He looks and acts like he's come straight out of the 1970s, wearing an afro to boot.
* DittoFighter: He copies the powers of any wizard he faces.
* FaceOfAThug: He looks real intimidating and ObviouslyEvil, especially on his wanted poster. However, his one goal in life is to reunite with his true love.
* HappilyMarried: His appearance with Aceto in the penultimate episode of the anime indicates that he has been released from prison and is now happily living with her.
* HeelFaceTurn: He promises to serve time and clean up his act after proposing to Aceto, who in turn IWillWaitForYou promises to wait for him. He's last seen HappilyMarried with her in the penultimate episode.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: He fell in love with Aceto, but her father didn't approve the relationship and drove him away. Velveno tried to ignore his feelings for Aceto as a result, eventually turning to a life of crime.
* MasterOfDisguise: He uses transformation magic to infiltrate guilds and copy their members' abilities.
* PointyEars: They add to his intimidating appearance as a guild hunter.
* PowerCopying: His Drain magic allows him to copy up to three spells from the people he touches.
* PutOnAPrisonBus: Towards the end of the Key of the Starry Sky arc, he's last seen being arrested by the Rune Knights.
* RedBaron: He's called "Guild Hunter" Velveno because he can take out an entire wizard guild with his PowerCopying ability.
* StarCrossedLovers: He was a lowly servant who fell in love with an aristocrat he worked for, and later became a criminal after getting driven off by her disapproving father. They eventually overcome this when the two become engaged.

An alternative timeline counterpart of Rogue Cheney who comes from a future ruled by Acnologia. He used the Eclipse Gate to travel from X798 to the main timeline, but his reasons for doing so prove to be much more sinister than he lets on. In addition to his Shadow Dragon Slayer Magic, he has forcibly taken Sting's magic to enter White-Shadow Dragon Mode, which combines the powers of the Twin Dragons.

->For tropes shared with and related to his main timeline counterpart, see his entry on the Saber Tooth page.
----
* AlternateSelf: He's the alternate self of the prime timeline Rogue Cheney, who became a TragicVillain and a WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds after Frosch's death and later conceived a plan to bring the dragons to the prime timeline.
* AmbitionIsEvil: When he reveals his true intentions to slay Acnologia and become the new Dragon King, he admits that it gives him chills to be the one to rule the world after spending years living in helpless fear of Acnologia.
* ArchEnemy: He becomes one to Natsu Dragneel after the latter witnesses Lucy Heartfilia's future counterpart TakingTheBullet for her X791 self.
* ArcVillain: Rogue's X798 counterpart is responsible for all of the danger in the Grand Magic Games arc, where his modus operandi is to use Fiore's royalty as pawns to summon a horde of dragons from the past for him to command and kill Acnologia, becoming the new Dragon King.
* TheBeastmaster: He commands dragons using a CompellingVoice spell known as Dragon Supremacy Magic. However, it does have limits: he states that the most he can do is MoreThanMindControl on the seven dragons he managed to get through the Eclipse Gate (and outright admits that his original plan to control 10,000 of them was likely over-selling himself), and it flat-out has no effect on Acnologia.
* TheChessmaster: He manipulates Fiore's royalty into summoning 10,000 dragons to defeat Acnologia so that he can TakeOverTheWorld and cause the catastrophe in Fiore.
* CynicismCatalyst: In the alternate timeline where Rogue comes from, Frosch's death approximately one year after the Grand Magic Games is what causes Rogue to turn to the dark side and create his modus operandi.
* DarkIsEvil: Future Rogue is not only the resident ArcVillain of the Grand Magic Games arc, but is also a user of shadow magic who was also taken over by an evil LivingShadow due to Frosch's death.
* DespairEventHorizon: He crossed it when he lost Frosch in his timeline, which sent him straight to the dark side.
* DrivenToVillainy: Frosch's death in X792 led Rogue's LivingShadow to consume the latter and became a TragicVillain. By the time he arrives from X798, he's more than willing to create the catastrophe that will wipe out Fiore.
* DualityMotif: He killed Sting and gained both the powers of the Shadow Dragon Slayer and the White Dragon Slayer. This is emphasized by his appearance, which combines black and white coloring and his multicolored hair. Especially when he enters White-Shadow Dragon Mode, half of his face remains the same while the other one is concealed by a shadow.
* EvilPlan: He attempts to have Hisui open Eclipse and create a StableTimeLoop so that the dragons can create the catastrophe that will wipe out Fiore with himself in control to ultimately benefit.
* EyeScream: His right eye has been replaced with a scar by the time he arrives from X798, implying it was gouged out.
* FaceHeelTurn: While Rogue has frequently struggled with his LivingShadow in the alternate timeline, he fights alongside Sting as one-half of the Twin Dragons in Saber Tooth. It is Frosch's death in this timeline that leads to Rogue becoming a TragicVillain.
* FacialMarkings: He has a tattoo on the left side of his face.
* FallenHero: In the alternate timeline where he comes from, Rouge was once one of the respected Twin Dragons of Saber Tooth. However, it wasn't until Frosch's death and his murder of Sting that caused his fall from grace.
* FutureBadass: He's far stronger than his main timeline counterpart, and he's able to wipe out entire waves of soldiers without much effort. He's also powerful enough to defeat Natsu at full strength.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: He has one completely replacing his right eye, hinting that he isn't quite as noble as he claims to be.
* GrandTheftMe: He briefly takes over his own main timeline counterpart's body during the battle with Gajeel, powering him up significantly. He scampers off when he gets beaten, realizing he isn't quite as powerful as he is in the future.
* GrayscaleOfEvil: His outfit is a mix of black and white, wields both Shadow and White Dragon Slayer Magics, and is the BigBad of the Grand Magic Games arc.
* HeroKiller: He kills Future Lucy and murders Sting in his own timeline. He is also one of the few villains to definitively defeat Natsu in their initial battle and is indirectly responsible for letting the dragons kill most of the wizards, including Gray, at least until Ultear reverses time and undoes all the deaths.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: He travels back in time and hijacks the Eclipse Plan to cause the catastrophe in Fiore in his plot to TakeOverTheWorld. By killing Lucy's alternate counterpart in front of her main timeline counterpart's friends, however, it allows Fairy Tail to help the kingdom stop the disaster for good.
* ItsAllAboutMe: He wants to use the seven dragons to kill Acnologia and TakeOverTheWorld, not caring if all of humanity gets wiped out. He goes through a VillainousBreakdown when Natsu points out that he's trying to drive the present into despair for his own satisfaction.
* JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope: In the alternate timeline he comes from, Rogue went from a TokenGoodTeammate of Saber Tooth to a straight-up TragicVillain when Gray killed Frosch.
* KickTheMoralityPet: Played with. When Natsu brings up Frosch, the very reason Rogue's future counterpart went JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope into a TragicVillain in the first place, he points out that he's outgrown his X791 self that always played with a cat and doesn't care that Frosch might end up dead in the dragon attack, as it would ensure his mainline self becomes no better than him in the end. However, before returning to his own time, he does warn Natsu about the circumstances that would cause Frosch's death to prevent it, showing he never truly stopped caring about Frosch and his inability to save them.
* KillAllHumans: He plans to create a new age of dragons by using the dragons that came through the Eclipse Gate to wipe out humanity.
* LackOfEmpathy: He doesn't seem to care that his plans to hijack Hisui's Eclipse project would result in the suffering and deaths of billions as long as he can become the Dragon King.
* LightIsNotGood: While his uniform is mostly white, he's definitely not a good guy.
* LivingShadow: He has the ability to turn himself into the very kind of shadow living in the present Rogue, which allows him to take over his own main timeline counterpart.
* MakeWrongWhatOnceWentRight: At first, Future Rogue says he wishes to save the past by using the Eclipse Cannon back when it is powerful enough to defeat the dragons that will ravage Fiore, and that Lucy will interfere. Then it turns out he made up the Eclipse Cannon and twisted Lucy's actions into a negative light to ensure that Hisui would open Eclipse so the dragons can come through it, giving him an army of dragons with which to take down Acnologia and rule the world, and admits he doesn't have a problem with ensuring his mainline self survives to ultimately become just him, Frosch's tragic demise included. Understandably, Natsu's not happy about this.
* TheManBehindTheWoman: He commands Hisui to open the Eclipse so he can create a StableTimeLoop where the dragons burn down Fiore and take down Acnologia.
* ManipulativeBastard: He comes from X798, saying that he wants to rescue it from 10,000 dragons when he actually plots to create a StableTimeLoop where the dragons burn down Fiore anyway and tells Hisui that the Eclipse can be used as a weapon to defeat them when there's no such thing. Also, by trying to kill Lucy's prime timeline self to stop her from closing Eclipse as he did in his timeline, he tricks the heroes into thinking that closing the gate is a bad idea, leaving the doors open long enough for a few dragons to get through.
* MaskOfSanity: He's a smart and confident individual who can come across as an affable person when speaking to Natsu and his friends, but it doesn't take long for them to realize that he's completely insane once he reveals his true intentions.
* MythicalMotifs: Has his present self's association with dragons taken up a notch with the addition of a second Dragon Slayer Magic and his ability to control dragons themselves to a degree.
* NearVillainVictory: He comes very close to causing the disaster in Fiore at the end of the Grand Magic Games arc, only for it to be undone thanks to Ultear's Last Ages.
* NotSoWellIntentionedExtremist: He says he wants to save the past using the Eclipse Cannon when it's powerful enough to defeat the dragons. However, it turns out that the Eclipse Cannon doesn't exist; he wants to open Eclipse so that he can cause the disaster that will wipe out Fiore and take down Acnologia with his army of dragons.
* ObviouslyEvil: Natsu says he can smell the evil on him. Even his UnwittingPawn Hisui was hesitant to trust him before he started feeding her lies about the Eclipse Cannon.
* OmnicidalManiac: His ultimate goal is to wipe out humanity using the dragons so that he can succeed Acnologia as the next Dragon King.
* PowerParasite: He killed Sting and stole his White Dragon powers. The combo is powerful enough to defeat Natsu, who was strong enough to face both Twin Dragons on his own.
* RedRightHand: He has a blind right eye, and serves as the main villain of the Grand Magic Games arc.
* SecretlySelfish: Despite his initial statements that he's planning to save Earth-land from 10,000 dragons, his true motive is to to TakeOverTheWorld in Acnologia's place and become the next Dragon King.
* SmugSnake: He's too overconfident to realize that an army of dragons, let alone the seven he manages to get through, wouldn't be enough to take down Acnologia, the very being who drove the once-thriving dragon population to virtual extinction.
* StartOfDarkness: In the alternate X792, Rogue turned to the dark side when Gray killed Frosch and his LivingShadow consumed him six years earlier. Sometime after that, Acnologia took over and plunged the world into fear and despair, which factored into Rogue's decision to go to X791 and cause the catastrophe in Fiore to acquire enough power to usurp the Dragon King and move beyond his own helplessness against Acnologia's power.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Future Rogue is the result of his prime timeline's counterpart fully succumbing to the LivingShadow inside him, making him tremendously more powerful, but also completely heartless. He also briefly serves as one for Rogue's X791 counterpart when possessing him; even though he notes his own power isn't nearly as great, it still makes this version's Rogue strong enough to totally overwhelm Gajeel before he manages to obtain Iron-Shadow Dragon Mode.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: A Trope example. Future Rogue intends to destroy Acnologia using ten thousand dragons to destroy the lone Acnologia, but after Lucy and Yukino close Eclipse shortly after seven of the dragons arrive in the prime timeline, Future Rogue admits that controlling thousands of dragons would have been next to impossible given how much trouble he's having just influencing these seven.
* TookALevelInJerkass: In the alternate timeline he comes from, Rogue let his SuperpoweredEvilSide take over after Gray killed Frosch in X792, causing the former to turn to the dark side and become arrogant, self-absorbed, and lacking empathy.
* TragicTimeTraveler: He comes from a future where Acnologia took over and destroyed the world, and he lost his Exceed partner Frosch before being forced to serve under Acnologia. He travels back in time in order to try and kill the dragon by using the legions of dragons left behind by a future version of Lucy, but his plans are foiled when Natsu uses his own Mothergate to destroy the Eclipse Gate he used to travel in time, sending him back into his future as he realizes that everything he did was for naught.
* TragicVillain: Before his FaceHeelTurn, he was one of the kindest members of the Saber Tooth guild, but when Gray murdered Frosch, Rogue crossed the DespairEventHorizon, his LivingShadow completely consumed him and he TookALevelInJerkass. His final transformation into a villain occurred after he succumbed to the fear and desperation of living in a world ruled by Acnologia.
* VillainousBreakdown: He's a calm, composed and arrogant jerk until Natsu calls him out on his plans to create the catastrophe in Fiore for his own satisfaction. Then, he goes berserk.
* VillainsDyingGrace: This is trope as he simply returns to his original timeline alive, but right before he goes, he tells Natsu that Gray will kill Frosch in X792, thus giving him a chance to prevent the present-day Rogue's StartOfDarkness.
* WalkingSpoiler: He is revealed at the of the Grand Magic Games arc to be its true main antagonist, the one who hijacked the Eclipse Project, and the EvilCounterpart of Rogue Cheney.
%%* WhiteHairBlackHeart: A partial example in the case of his multicolored hair; more than half of his hair is white, while his remaining hair is as black as his heart.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Frosch's murder at the hands of Gray, coupled with years at the utter mercy of Acnologia, negatively impacted Rogue to the point where he traveled the main timeline to cause the catastrophe in Fiore during the Grand Magic Games.
* WouldHitAGirl: He couldn't care less about murdering women, as demonstrated with Lucy and her future counterpart, to cause Fiore's destruction.
* YinYangBomb: His White-Shadow Dragon Mode combines his Shadow Dragon Slayer Magic with Sting's White Dragon Slayer Magic.
