[[folder:Emerald City Citizens]]
!!Petra
* BrainyBrunette: As a GuileHero, Petra often uses her smarts to get out of sticky situations.
* BerserkButton: Petra doesn't like it when people tell her she should prioritize duty over her little brother.
* CityMouse
* CynicismCatalyst: Petra was more duty-bound, like Jinjur, when she was willing to support the Ozian army in their fight against the Phanfasms. However, after her brother went missing during the war and the Ozian army presumed him dead, Petra defected from the army and started her own detective business while continuing the search for her brother, complete with [[HardboiledDetective hard-boiled cynicism]] as a result of the experience.
* DeadpanSnarker
* GuileHero: Petra's main tactic in going forward in her investigations is to manipulate and influence suspects to give up information. This is especially evident when she goes undercover to find Frogman's files, and when she hires Lion to argue in favor of her ambassadorship so that she can legally travel to Phanfasm Island to find her brother.
* HardboiledDetective: Parodied with Petra. She's more snarky than she is cynical, and is addicted to coffee, not alcohol.
* KnightInSourArmor: Although Petra first comes off a detective who is OnlyInItForTheMoney, she proves on countless occasions that she willingly stands up for what is just, despite her cynicism and belief that Oz is a CrapsackWorld. She also never gives up on finding her brother.
* MeaningfulName: "Petra" is the Greek for "Stone". It fits her because of her strong personality, and also because she is a citizen of the Emerald City - emeralds are precious stones.
* MistakenForGay: When she brings Betsy Bobbings the flowers:
--> '''Betsy''': Thanks, but you got the wrong idea.
* PrivateDetective
* StreetSmart: Petra never had the chance to attend university, but that doesn't make her any less clever and intuitive.
----
!!(The Cowardly) Lion
* AmoralAttorney: Lion charges ridiculous rates for his services, at least up to 10,000 emeralds on average. As seen in his conversation with Scraps, if customers can't pay, Lion usually sends goons to rough up or sabotage their businesses.
* ArchEnemy: Lion is written as Petra's, since the game starts with bad blood between them, and they eventually conclude that they'll face each other again near the end of the game.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Per his being an AmoralAttorney.
* FriendlyEnemy: Lion works with Petra when she asks for his help in getting to Phanfasm Island.
----
!!Cutter[[spoiler:/William]]
%% * BespectacledCutie: Cutter, who's shy and dorky. [[spoiler:Subverted when it's revealed that he's really a Phanfasm spy]].
* TheMole: Although he seems like one of the few characters willing to help Petra at first, [[spoiler:he's really a Phanfasm spy working for the First and Foremost Phanfasm to infiltrate Oz]].
* MustMakeAmends: Once Cutter realizes that [[spoiler:the First and Foremost was only using him]], he has a HeelFaceTurn and decides to do anything it takes to make up for the bad deeds he's committed.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Happens when Cutter realizes that [[spoiler:his actions have doomed Oz, and that he can never return there because he would be considered a traitor]].
%% * [[spoiler: RaiseHimRightThisTime]]: In the end.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: [[AvertedTrope Averted.]] At first sight, you'd have never guessed that he's [[spoiler:Petra's brother William, considering she's a dark-eyed brunette and he's blonde]].
* WalkingSpoiler
----
!!Wogglebug
* DeanBitterman: Wogglebug is pompous, and believes that education should only be for the privileged elite in Oz.
----
!!Scraps, the Patchwork Girl
* FriendInTheBlackMarket: Scraps is the go-to-girl if you ever need either convenience store items or illegal magical goods.
----
!!Ruggedo
%% * TheBartender: Of his own establishment, to boot.
* HowTheMightyHaveFallen: Before he was put under protection in Oz from the Phanfasms, Ruggedo was the Nome King. Now, he just owns a bar, and he can't even practice magic…not legally, that is.
----
!!Anzel
* CasanovaWannabe: Anzel constantly addresses Petra with affectionate pet names, but Petra never shows any interest in him apart from needing him for information on the MacGuffin.
* DirtyCoward: As evidenced by several occasions:
** Rather than confronting Dee about not wanting to help her, he opts to be transformed into a crystal decanter in order to avoid her.
** He runs away from Petra when she begins to ask him questions about the Spirit Rod.
* RunawayFiance: Dee's. Petra's first case at the beginning of the game is to track him down.
----
!!Betsy Bobbins
* AlliterativeName
* CuteButCacophonic: She looks like the typical cute, blonde Southern girl, but she has a high-pitched, nasally voice.
* RichBitch: Betsy is one of the privileged elite in the Emerald City, and has no problem with looking down on Petra for being from a poorer district.
* TheVamp: A subdued version. Betsy has plenty of suitors, and lets them think she's interested by accepting their gifts…although it's made clear that she only really wants the gifts.
----
!!Captain Bill
* DrowningMySorrows: With reason, considering [[spoiler:he's being blackmailed by Jack Pumpkinhead]], and as a result of an explosion, is also being investigated by the royal guard.
* ParentalSubstitute: Captain Bill took Trot in when she was an orphan, and has raised her as his daughter.
----

[[folder:Emerald City Royalty and Military]]
!!Ozma
* [[TheNeedsOfTheMany For the Greater Good]]: She says this word for word at a certain point in the climax.
* TheHighQueen: Ozma comes off as a stoic figure that will do what she believes is best for Oz no matter what the consequences. Leads to resentment by her subjects.
* IceQueen: Said verbatim by Anzel when describing Ozma.
* ModestRoyalty: Ozma counts, since she wears a simple white dress and a small crown.
----
!!The Scarecrow
* TheConsigliere: To Ozma. The Scarecrow was ruler of the Emerald City and has since stepped down, but he's proven to make fair and reasonable decisions when needed.
* GentlemanAndAScholar: Quotes Mark Twain in his free time, always soft-spoken, and acts as a wise advisor to Ozma.
* ThePhilosopher: When Petra first meets the Scarecrow outside her office, he spouts off a handful of [[ContemplateOurNavels philosophical questions]].
----
!!Dorothy (Dee) Gale
* FemmeFatale: Dee assumes this role when she first walks into Petra's office with a new case.
* HotterAndSexier: Dee's outfit is a combination of her signature blue dress combined with the trademark FemmeFatale HighClassGloves, high heels, and [[StockingFiller sheer stockings]].
* NouveauRiche: In contrast to Ozma, who is [[ModestRoyalty modest about her royalty]], Dee is rude to most everyone and flashy in regards to the money she has.
* RichBitch: Dee is one of these. When Petra asks for Dee's help in getting her out of prison and it is revealed that Dee has a belt that grants one wish a day, Dee refuses to "waste" one of her wishes on Petra. She eventually uses this wish anyway to turn Petra mute out of spite.
----
!!Toto
* FantasticRacism: He informs Petra that he protests against talking animals not being accepted into universities and generally being treated poorly. [[Literature/{{Wicked}} Sounds familiar?]]
* TheNoseKnows: Apparently, dogs can sniff out magic.
* TalkingAnimal: Toto now has the ability to speak when in Oz.
----
!!Jinjur
* BadassLongcoat: Jinjur and her military peacoat.
* GungHolierThanThou: Jinjur comes across as this at times, especially when she rigidly stands up for the guard and its authority—especially considering her disdain for Petra's abandonment of her post.
----
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Winkie Country]]
!!Nick Chopper/The Tin Man
* TheAlcoholic: Seemingly played straight, since the Tin Man is portrayed as an alcoholic who constantly drinks due to his breakup with Nimee Amee, his inability to defeat Frogman, and his ineffectiveness as the Winkie governor. Played with, though, when you realize that the Tin Man can't possibly get drunk from drinking crude oil all day.
* StoicWoobie: Nick's clearly affected by his breakup with Nimee Amee, and he’s disappointed that he can't do much to help the corruption in Flow, but he sure doesn't seem like he cares, since he stands around drinking all day.
* StoppedCaring: In regards to being the governor. Nick knows that since Frogman essentially runs half of Flow, he can't create change until he takes the Frogman down, which is near impossible to do.
----
!!Frogman
* LoanShark: The profits that Frogman makes are primarily from loaning the residents of Flow funds to help their businesses, then threatening to sabotage them if they can't pay up.
* {{Narcissist}}: Judging from his room-sized painting of himself, Frogman seems to be very self-absorbed. [[spoiler:Though the painting does double as a PortalPicture.]]
----
!!Nimee Amee
* SassySecretary: Nimee becomes one of these when the Tin Man rejects her, and she gets fed up with Frogman's unappreciative nature.
* SexySecretary: She's the Frogman's assistant. Petra {{lampshades}} the sexual undertones of this when [[NoYay Nimee says that she'll do anything]] [[BrainBleach the Frogman needs her to do]]. Her relationship with the Frogman is also hinted at.
----
!!Shaggy
* InsecureLoveInterest: Shaggy believes he isn't cultured enough for Miss Cayke, which is why he hasn't asked her out after having known her for so long.
----
!!Miss Cayke
* FeminineWomenCanCook: Miss Cayke is well known for her spectacular diner that serves Munchkin food, and both her appearance and characterization establish her as traditionally feminine.
* GreenThumb: The reason why she can make the food is because she has a special spell called "Biguuf" that makes plants grow big.
----
!!Wicked Witch of the West
* EnemyMine: The Witch makes it clear that she she has aspirations of ruling Winkie Country or even Oz, but helps Petra knowing Oz needs to be protected from the Phanfasms.
* HotWitch: This incarnation of the Wicked Witch of the West is more a hot one rather than a [[WickedWitch wicked one]].
----
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Quadling Country]]
!!Glinda
* HotLibrarian: Glinda has been reimagined as one of these, complete with glasses, a red suit, and a (formerly) expansive library.
* MagicLibrarian: Glinda houses a grand library in her tower…at least it was grand before the tower was neglected for decades.
* SpiritAdvisor: She's implied to act as this for the Wizard after Petra frees her from the Keystone, especially in helping him to rebuild her library.
----
!!The Wizard of Oz
* AffectionateNickname: Glinda calls the wizard P.I.N.H.E.A.D. for short.
* FunWithAcronyms: His OverlyLongName being Pinhead.
* OverlyLongName: Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkel Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs.
* SquishyWizard: Although the Wizard has become a notable magic-user in Oz, he's not in the best of shape.
----
!!Woot
* AnnouncerChatter: Woot is officially the announcer for magical duels in the arena, which allows him to double as the CombatCommentator.
* CombatCommentator: Woot narrates the moves of Petra and Mombi during their magic duel.
----
!!Mombi
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: In keeping with the noir setting, Mombi has a much more glamorous and beautiful look. In the books, she was a stereotypical old hook-nosed hag.
* LadyOfBlackMagic: Mombi is the reigning magical champion of Woot's arena. Not only does she heavily rely on offensive magic in the ring, but she also has some decent defensive magic as a backup.
* SoreLoser: Mombi doesn't take losing her title as champion of the arena very well, and accuses Petra of cheating in their duel.
----
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Phanfasm Island]]
!!First and Foremost
* BearsAreBadNews: First and Foremost has a man's body and a grizzly bear's head, amplifying his role as the villain.
* BeastMan: See BearsAreBadNews above.
* BigBad: He's the villain that Petra needs to defeat in order to restore balance to Oz and [[spoiler:save her brother William]].
* ForTheEvulz: The First and Foremost wants to destroy Oz simply for the hell of it.
* LargeHam: In all of his scenes, the First and Foremost seems to be [[ChewingTheScenery chewing up the set]] with clichéd and over-the-top lines.
[[/folder]]
