[[header: Mamutoi]]
A tribe found in Eastern Europe, in the area that is now Ukraine. They are first introduced in ''The Valley of Horses'', but are featured more prominently in ''The Mammoth Hunters'', during which Ayla and Jondalar spend a year living with the Lion Camp of the Mamutoi. They are known for hunting mammoths commonly found in their territory.

!!In General
* AdultAdoptee: The Mamutoi can adopt or 'sponsor' an adult into their tribe. This happens to Ayla in ''The Mammoth Hunters'', who is 17/18 years old (and considered an adult by Mamutoi standards) and has no people.
* AnimalMotif: Mammoths. They are a central part of their culture, with the people holding great mammoth hunts every year and using every part of the mammoth for building materials, tools, clothing, food and so on. They are famed for hunting mammoths and the animals also have spiritual significance to them - the mamuts as a collective group are called 'the Mammoth Hearth' and Mamut has a screen with alleged magical properties made from the skin of a white mammoth, believed to be extremely sacred.
* BrutalHonesty: Downplayed. They can come across this way to Jondalar, though not so much to Ayla. As a culture, the Mamutoi tend to be more straight-to-the-point and upfront compared to the Zelandonii, who tend to be more reserved or subtle (often for the sake of politeness and courtesy). Hence, they can come off as blunt to Jondalar (especially as he's conditioned himself to restrain his emotions), but they don't to Ayla, who was raised by people who literally ''can't'' lie.
* FacialMarkings: Fully-trained mamuts have tattoos shaped like chevrons on one of their cheeks.
* FantasticHonorifics: Holy men and women are called mamuts and referred to almost exclusively by their title.
* FantasticRacism: Towards 'flatheads' and [[HalfBreedDiscrimination those of mixed spirits]], although some people, in particular the Lion Camp eventually, are more tolerant of them.
* HandSignals: The Lion Camp becomes (comparatively) fluent at Clan handsign due to both Ayla's and Rydag's tutelage, to the point where they are able to organize practical jokes via sign ''while talking verbally about something else''.
* {{Foil}}[=/=]MirrorCharacter: Several members of the Lion Camp are seen by Ayla as having similar characteristics to the members of the Clan she left behind, especially those with similar roles to the Clan members. She also notes the differences between the Lion Camp and their Clan counterparts as she gets more acclimated to life in a Cro-Magnon society.
** Talut, the male leader of Lion Camp, is the mirror of Brun, with a similar sense of responsibility towards the well-being of the Camp. While Ayla at first thinks of him as less effective than Brun due to the raucousness of Lion Camp meetings compared to Brun's absolute command of Clan gatherings, she begins to understand that Talut has the leadership skills needed to lead a group of people more used to government by consensus, rather than the autocratic, hierarchy-driven Clan.
** Tulie, Talut's sister and the female leader of the camp, is also a mirror of Brun, but of his more serious side.
** Mamut is an obvious Mirror of Creb, as both are the shamans of their respective tribes and both formally adopt Ayla into their respective families. Ayla even momentarily confuses Mamut for Creb, due to a tattoo under his eye making him briefly appear to be one-eyed like the Clan mog-ur. Mamut turns out to much of the same insight as Creb, and is eventually revealed to be the man of the Others Creb once told Ayla about that had lived with the Clan. Both men are interested in Ayla's ability to communion with the spirit world, though Mamut is much freer to explore Ayla's spiritual abilities as the Mamutoi do not have a taboo against women practicing spirit magic and even encourage it, unlike the Clan.
** Rydag is not only a mirror character to Ayla's half-clan son, Durc, but is seen by Ayla as a substitute for her lost son. The Lion Camp grows to accept him much more once Ayla teaches them Clan signals to communicate with him. [[spoiler: When he dies at the end, the entire Lion Camp grieves for him just as deeply as they would for any other member of the Camp. They all contribute offerings and attend his funeral, which a mix of Mamutoi customs and Clan customs orchestrated by Ayla from memories of funeral ceremonies her adoptive Clan father, Creb, held. Rydag's funeral helps give Ayla some closure over losing Durc while at the same time showing her that, despite the Lion Camp's acceptance of Rydag, that Durc would have an extremely difficult life living among the "Others."]]
** Nezzie, Talut's maternal wife and adoptive mother of Rydag, is a mirror for Iza, Ayla's adoptive clan mother, and often explains the facts of life in Cro-Magnon society to Ayla in the way a mother would.
** Latie, Talut and Nezzie's daughter, is a mirror to Ayla's adoptive Clan sister, Uba.
** Deegie, Ayla's first female adult Cro-Magnon friend, is a mirror to Ovra, her best friend in the Clan.
** Wymez, the Lion Camp's flint-knapper, is a mirror character to the kindly but taciturn Clan flint-knapper, Droog.
** Frebec starts out as a mirror character of Broud. He vehemently opposes Ayla joining the clan and refers to Rydag as an animal and as a [[FantasticRacism flathead]]. His opposition nearly causes Ayla to be rejected for adoption by the Lion Camp. Like Broud, Frebec's prejudices are rooted in part in insecurity, as he was originally from a low-ranked Mamutoi clan who was only a member of the Lion Camp by virtue of winning the love of Fralie, the daughter of the former headwoman. As with Broud, Ayla saves the life of his child. Frebec becomes a foil to Broud at this point by being genuinely grateful to Ayla for saving his baby's life. At the same time, he also learns constructive ways to assert himself, which makes him feel more confident and secure of his place in the Lion Camp without needing to denigrate Ayla and in turn makes the Lion Camp much more accepting of him. From that point forward, Frebec becomes one of Ayla's staunchest allies and also learns to make friends with Rydag. It's heartwarming to see Frebec standing up to his own relatives to defend Ayla and Rydag from anti-Clan racism at the Summer Meeting, and he is also in attendance at Rydag's funeral.
* SiblingsShareTheThrone: Amongst the Mamutoi, Camps are led by a headman and headwoman, who are traditionally a brother and sister. Siblings Talut and Tulie are the co-leaders of the Lion Camp, while Tulie's eldest son Tarneg and eldest daughter Deegie intend to start up a new camp with them as the leaders.
* ThemeNaming:
** The Mamutoi often have names ending in "ec" for men and "ie" for women. Names with only two syllables are also quite common.
** Mamutoi camps are always named after animals or plants; individual hearths within the camps are named after animals too (or at least the ones in the Lion Camp are). The hearth of the camp's mamut is always known as the Mammoth Hearth.
* TitleDrop / WhatItSaysOnTheTin: Mamutoi literally means 'Mammoth Hunters' (or to be even more specific, the 'Children of the Great Mother who Hunt Mammoths').

The wise shaman of the Lion Camp, who becomes a mentor to Ayla.
----
* ChekhovsGunman: In ''The Clan of the Cave Bear'', Iza mentions that her grandmother nursed a young man of the Others back to health after he broke his arm and that he lived with them for a time. In ''The Mammoth Hunters'', that man is revealed to be Mamut.
* CoolOldGuy: He's immensely old even by his people's standards (humans don't tend to live as long in the Ice Age), with a vast wealth of knowledge and wisdom; he even states "[[BadassBoast I have forgotten more than you will ever know]]" and no one doubts it. He can be both a kindly grandfather figure and a commanding shaman when the situation calls for it.
* LikeADaughterToMe: He regards Ayla as a daughter and formally adopts her.
* TheMentor: To Ayla, giving her some basic shaman training and helping understand more about her burgeoning spiritual gifts. He also helps her grow as a person a great deal and gain a greater understanding of herself, in particular helping her realize that she no longer has to follow the rules and restrictions of the Clan.
* MerlinAndNimue: The Merlin to Ayla's Nimue in the third book, mentoring her as a shaman. Unlike some examples of this trope, there's no romance, with Mamut viewing Ayla as a daughter and even adopting her.
* NearDeathExperience: He slips into a coma and nearly dies after taking some of the mog-urs' sacred root drink with Ayla. After recovering, Mamut swears off using the root ever again, saying not even he is powerful enough to control its effects and fearing that he and Ayla's spirits could've been lost forever. He warns Ayla against using it either and gains even more respect for Creb, who ''was'' capable of retaining his awareness and self-control under the root's influence.
* TheOneThatGotAway: He tells Ayla that while he lived with the Clan, he developed an attachment to a Clan woman who was assigned to care for him during his recovery. Mamut considered asking her to come with him when he left, but ultimately decided against this because he felt she wouldn't be happy living with the Mamutoi, nor would his people easily accept a relationship between them. He often wondered what happened to her and receives some closure when Ayla tells him the woman died in the earthquake that destroyed her clan's cave, but that she was always provided for prior to her death.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Like all shamans, he's only referred to by his title 'Mamut'. He's so old, few people even know his real name anymore.
%%* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: To Ayla and Jondalar.
* WizardBeard: He has a long white beard in this style; although he's not explicitly a wizard in the traditional sense, he's a wise holy man of the Mamutoi and has some preternatural - if not possibly supernatural- abilities.
* YouRemindMeOfX: Of the second variant. When Ayla first meets him, he reminds her strongly of Creb, not so much in appearance, but in that they're both very old and exude an aura of power and wisdom. The effect is so compelling that Ayla kneels before him like she would to a senior Clan member out of respect. They eventually develop a close, father-daughter bond much like the one Ayla shared with Creb.

!!'''Talut'''

The headman of the Lion Camp. He is the brother of Tulie, the mate of Nezzie, the father of Danug, Latie and Rugie, and adopted father of Rydag.
----
* BoisterousBruiser: He's eager to be involved in hunts, wrestling matches and sporting competitions, and has a consistently jovial and enthusiastic attitude, not to mention a habit of speaking and laughing loudly.
* FieryRedhead: He has bright red hair and a matching beard, and is a loudly-spoken man who holds nothing back when he's both happy or angry.
* HappilyMarried: He's happily mated to Nezzie, with whom he has four children (three biological, one adopted). It's mentioned that although Talut enjoys having casual sex with other women at Summer Meetings (which isn't frowned upon in his culture), it's Nezzie he loves and he's devoted to her and their family. Notably, he agreed to let Nezzie adopt Rydag despite the Mamutoi generally looking upon children of mixed spirits as abominations, and he's quick to defend Nezzie if anyone makes insulting remarks about her. They're also noted to have an active sex life, with Ayla overhearing them making love one night.
* {{Hypocrite}}: A [[DownplayedTrope minor example]] comes up regarding his marriage. Nezzie says that while Talut is very open about hooking up with other women and she never complains, she doesn't think he'd like it if she chose other men to sleep with. She doesn't say that he'd actively try to stop her or protest it, though (especially as open relationships are the norm in Mamutoi culture).
* LargeAndInCharge: He's co-leader of the Lion Camp and everything about him is large; he's over six feet tall, broad and very muscular (Ayla notes that his biceps are as thick as many men's legs) with a booming voice.
* TheLeader: Of the Lion Camp, alongside his sister. He's primarily of the Charismatic variety; he's very warm and personable, always tries to be on good terms with other people, takes everyone's opinions into account and embraces newcomers. Initially, Ayla negatively compares his leadership style to Brun's, who was far more authoritative and dignified, but as she spends more time with the Lion Camp, she comes to realise and appreciate that Talut's approach to leadership is better suited to Mamutoi culture; the Mamutoi have a more democratic and equal society compared to the Clan, so Talut being a more approachable and diplomatic leader helps keep the camp running smoothly and quickly resolves disputes.
* LikeADaughterToMe: He comes to regard Ayla as a daughter, given her close relationship with his family and her having no family of her own.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: He happily allows Ayla to keep Wolf, though he says he'll hold her accountable if she cannot keep him under control or he hurts someone, terms Ayla finds fair.

[[folder: Nezzie]]
!!'''Nezzie'''
->'''Appears in:''' ''The Mammoth Hunters''

Talut's mate, mother of Danug, Latie and Rugie, and adoptive mother of Rydag. She's also the sister of Wymez and aunt to Ranec.
----
* GoodParents: She's a very caring and dedicated parent to all her children. In particular, she recognizes that Rydag is intelligent even though others think of him as animal; she insists on treating him just like her other children and is angered by people talking about him like he can't understand, and ''especially'' by people insinuating he's an abomination.
* HappilyMarried: She and Talut have been happily mated for years, with four children. Nezzie has a lot of influence over Talut due to his love for her.
%%* LikeADaughterToMe: Regards Ayla as this.
* NiceGirl: She's one of the kindest and most giving characters in the whole series. Notably, despite the Mamutoi generally being prejudiced against the Clan and mixed children, Nezzie insisted on helping Rydag's mother give birth and refused to abandon her baby, willingly taking him in and breastfeeding him along with her own child. She was also the one who persuaded the Lion Camp to take in the Crane Hearth, who no other camp was willing to accept.
* ParentalSubstitute:
** She served as a surrogate mother to her nephew Ranec, due to his mother dying when he was a baby.
** She becomes a mother figure to Ayla, including nearly formally adopting her. Ayla says that while she'll always think of Iza as her mother for caring for her as a child, she feels Nezzie is "the mother [she] needed to become a woman", specifically a Cro-Magnon woman rather than a Clan woman, which Iza herself knew she couldn't help Ayla with.
* TeamMom: To the Lion Camp, with Tulie stating she thinks Nezzie would be a mother to everyone if she could. One of her defining traits is her nurturing, maternal nature, which she extends to just about everyone.

[[folder: Danug]]
!!Danug
->'''Appears in:''' ''The Mammoth Hunters'' | ''The Land of Painted Caves''

The eldest child and eldest son of Nezzie and Talut, who is almost an adult during the events of ''The Mammoth Hunters''.
----
* TheBusCameBack: After being absent for two books (around five or six years in-universe and a whopping 26 years out-of-universe), Danug appears again the latter-half of ''The Land of Painted Caves'', he having gone ahead with his idea to go on a journey and travelled to Zelandonii territory to visit with Ayla and Jondalar.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Besides the difference in age, he strongly resembles his father, especially in terms of height, broadness and hair color. Ayla even says he's going to "grow into another Talut".
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Latie]]
!! Latie
->'''Appears in:''' ''The Mammoth Hunters''

Nezzie and Talut's eldest daughter.
----
* AllGirlsLikePonies: She quickly becomes attached to Whinney and Racer and is thrilled when Ayla lets her ride on Whinney. She even states a desire to tame a horse of her own someday, asking Ayla how she did it.
* BigSisterWorship: She comes to view Ayla as a CoolBigSis and greatly admires her; she's especially in awe of her ability with horses.
* PrecociousCrush: Develops one on Jondalar (although she's around thirteen at the time, rather than a young child). She even requests that Jondalar be the one who deflowers her during First Rites, though he declines due to viewing her more as a younger sister (and because of his emotional hang-ups about Ayla).
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Rydag]]
!!'''Rydag'''
->'''Appears in:''' ''The Mammoth Hunters''

A young half-Neanderthal boy who has been adopted by Talut and Nezzie.
----
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Rydag is often ostracized by others because he's of 'mixed spirits'; due to a heart condition he also can't keep up with the other children and so often gets ignored or left out. He can't talk much either because of his hybrid status and so cannot interact easily with others. He is treated kindly by his adopted family, though, and eventually with Ayla's help, he learns how to communicate non-verbally and is accepted by the whole Lion Camp. He's still shunned and treated badly by other Mamutoi camps at the Summer Meeting, although the Lion Camp publicly stand up for him.
* BornUnlucky: His mother [[DeathByChildbirth died in childbirth]] and it's hinted his father may have died before that, he spends most of his life being shunned or mocked and called an abomination, and suffers from a heart condition that eventually kills him. Despite this he was able to find some happiness in his short life and he is loved by his adoptive family.
* DeathOfAChild: He dies towards the end of ''The Mammoth Hunters'', in one of the biggest {{Tearjerker}}s in the series. He was born a heart defect which Ayla was able to treat for a time with medicine but eventually his heart gives out.
* DisappearedDad: It's unknown what happened to his biological father; when the Lion Camp found Rydag's heavily pregnant mother she was alone. Given that his mother wasn't too afraid of the Camp and possibly even approached them for help, Ayla speculates that she may have had some kind of relationship with Rydag's father (as opposed to her having been raped like several other Clan women) but that he may have died while she was pregnant.
* DishonoredDead: A completely undeserving example. After his death, the mamuts are reluctant to let him be buried with the usual funeral rites simply because he's of mixed spirits. Ayla is infuriated by this and [[DefiedTrope organizes a funeral for him anyway]].
* DueToTheDead: In defiance of the mamuts, Ayla organizes a Clan funeral for Rydag so he can be properly laid to rest, also acknowledging that he was a human being. The whole Lion Camp attends to say goodbye and a few other Mamutoi also come to pay their respects, realizing they may have been wrong. Ayla even uses her son's travelling cloak to wrap Rydag's body.
* GeneticMemory: It's revealed he can access the Clan's racial memories, on account of his mother being a Clan woman.
* HalfBreedDiscrimination: Some of the Mamutoi regard him as little more than an animal due to him being half-Clan...and that's one of the ''politer'' opinions. Others openly call him an "abomination" and think he should excluded from public events because he's of 'mixed spirits'.
* HappilyAdopted: By Nezzie and Talut. Although the rest of his life is difficult, Talut and Nezzie treat him like their son and he obviously loves them.
* HeartwarmingOrphan: He's a young half-Clan, half-Cro-Magnon boy who is adopted by Nezzie, the mate of the headman of the Mamutoi's Lion Camp. He's even sickly from a weak heart, but after Ayla teaches him the Clan's sign language, the rest of Lion Camp learn it to varying degrees so that they can communicate with him. When he dies of heart failure toward the end of ''The Mammoth Hunters'', most of the Lion Camp are devastated (and even some readers get a little teary-eyed).
* LittlestCancerPatient: Played straight, although technically he's got a heart condition, not cancer. He eventually dies from it, and the entire Camp, even including Wolf, is heartbroken.
* MommasBoy: Though he loves both his adopted parents, he is especially close to Nezzie. One of the first Clan signs he makes is to her, with Ayla explaining that he called her "mother".
* TheSilentBob: He's unable to vocalize much because he's half-Clan, but Ayla discovers he has the Clan's inherited memories for their sign language. She starts teaching (or rather ''reminding'') him how to use Clan signs and teaches them to the rest of the Lion Camp, allowing him to communicate that way.
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: He's a sweet, but sickly little boy who is unfairly ostracized for being a 'child of mixed spirits' and only ever wanted to be accepted, eventually dying from a heart condition he was born with.
* YouRemindMeOfX: In some ways, he reminds Ayla of her son, Durc, especially as he was also half-Clan, half-Cro Magnon. He also reminds of herself as a child; she knows all too well what it's like to be different from everyone else and to struggle to communicate and fit in, although she thinks Rydag has it harder than she did because while Ayla could pick up the Clan's sign language eventually, Rydag is physically unable to talk and lives among people who primarily communicate verbally.

[[folder: Tulie]]
!!'''Tulie'''
->'''Appears in:''' ''The Mammoth Hunters''

The headwoman of the Lion Camp. She is the sister of Talut and is mated to Barzec. She was also mated to Darnev simultaneously, though he had passed away by the events of ''The Mammoth Hunters''. She is the mother of Tarneg, Deegie, Druwez, Brinan and Tusie.
----
* DoubleInLawMarriage: She eventually has one with [[spoiler:Wymez; he's the brother of her sister-in-law Nezzie, so their families were always close]].
* ExoticExtendedMarriage: She was mated to both Darnev and Barzec at the same time (they were [[HeterosexualLifePartners best friends]] and didn't mind), which is uncommon but acceptable in her prehistoric culture. In ''The Land of Painted Caves'', it's revealed she's taken [[spoiler:Wymez]] as another mate.
* FieryRedhead: She's a passionate, strong-willed redhead.
* HappilyMarried: She's in a loving marriage with Barzec. She was also happily married to his best friend Darnev at the same time and has children fathered by both men; they were all one big happy family until Darnev died two years prior to the third book. Despite her grief, she and Barzec are still happy together.
* HonoraryAunt: Becomes something of one towards Ayla. Tulie's brother and sister-in-law come to regard Ayla as a daughter; Tulie doesn't quite have the same close, maternal relationship with Ayla as Nezzie does, but still regards her with affection and serves as a source of wisdom.
* TheLeader: Of the Lion Camp, alongside her brother.
* ShipperOnDeck: She accurately predicts that Ayla will choose neither Vincavec or Ranec, but her FirstLove Jondalar, and is happy she followed her heart.
* {{Tsundere}}: She can be somewhat aloof and suspicious, especially towards newcomers Ayla and Jondalar, but she eventually comes to trust and respect them, and stands up for Ayla when people judge her Clan background.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Barzec]]
!!Barzec
->'''Appears in:''' ''The Mammoth Hunters''

The mate of Tulie and father/stepfather to her children (he's the stepfather of Tarneg and Deegie, father of Druwez and Tusie, and possibly the father of Brinan).
----
* BeautifulSingingVoice: He's described as having a stirring singing voice at festivals, with Ayla thinking that she could listen to him sing for hours.
* ExoticExtendedMarriage: He co-mated Tulie with his best buddy Darnev (their relationship was platonic as far as we can tell, while they both fathered children with Tulie).
* GoodStepmother: Gender-flip; he's aware he's not the biological father of Deegie and Tarneg, and may not be Brinan's father either, but he loves them just the same as the two youngest kids and has helped raise them since they were born (especially as it means he's got some part of his late best friend to keep close).
* HappilyMarried: He has been in a loving relationship with his mate Tulie for years, with the only thing marring it being their shared grief for Darnev (with whom Barzec was co-mates).
* HeterosexualLifePartners: He was such close friends with Darnev, they were happy to mate the same woman and had no jealousy. Barzec was just as devastated as Tulie when Darnev died and still gets choked up thinking about how much he misses him.
* MamasBabyPapasMaybe: He's not entirely sure whether Tulie's middle child Brinan is a child of his spirit or Darnev's, though he loves the child either way. Technically, he can't be certain who fathered any of the children (especially because his people don't fully understand biological fatherhood), though he's pretty certain about most of the kids due to shared physical similarities).
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Deegie]]
!!'''Deegie'''
->'''Appears in:''' ''The Mammoth Hunters''

Eldest daughter of Tulie and Darnev, sister to Tarneg, Druwez, Brinan and Tusie. She becomes close friends with Ayla.
----
* BestFriend: She becomes this to Ayla, with the two women often spending time together and confiding in one another throughout the third novel. When Ayla leaves the Mamutoi to journey to the Zelandonii, Deegie is in floods of tears, saying how she had "never had a friend like [her]". Ayla herself thinks of Deegie as a sister and cries at the thought of leaving her.
* DisappearedDad: Her father Darnev died two years ago; although she still has her mother and her stepfather Barzec for support, she does express that she misses Darnev and wishes he'd lived to see her get married; as such, she sympathizes with Ayla, who has no family at all.
* FirstFriend: She's [[DownplayedTrope not the first friend]] Ayla ever had, but she is notably her first ''Cro-Magnon'' friend (discounting her early connection with Jondalar before their relationship became romantic). She's also one of the first friends Ayla has had in her own age group, as besides her adoptive sister Uba she mostly hung around with older people. Her friendship with Deegie gives her someone to easily relate to and helps her to integrate with Cro-Magnon society.
* StatuesqueStunner: She's noted to be a pretty woman who is "a fraction taller" than Ayla, who is herself tall for a woman.

[[folder: Ranec]]
!!'''Ranec'''
->'''Appears in:''' ''The Mammoth Hunters''

The Lion Camp's master carver, son of Wymez and [[LoveTriangle Jondalar's rival for Ayla's affections]]. He is notably of mixed ethnicity; his father is Ukrainian whilst his mother was a dark-skinned 'Aterian' (most likely African).
----
* ArtistsAreAttractive: Ranec is known for being one of the most skilled carvers in the Lion Camp and is very popular with women; his artistry highlights his sensitive and attentive personality. He carves a beautiful figurine showing a woman transforming into a bird for Ayla when they get engaged. However, although she's attracted to him Ayla's true love is Jondalar and when she breaks up with him she returns the carving, feeling it isn't right for her to keep it. [[spoiler:Tricie's still willing to marry him though]].
%%* BettyAndVeronica: Gender-flipped. He's the Betty to Jondalar's Veronica for Ayla.
* TheCharmer: He's incredibly charismatic and can win over almost anyone in a matter of moments.
* ChickMagnet: Women tend to fawn over him quite a bit, due to him being considered [[ForeignFanservice exotically handsome]], charming, funny, and [[SexGod good in bed]].
* DidNotGetTheGirl: He ''had'' the girl (Ayla)...but in the end she confesses she was [[AllLoveIsUnrequited never truly in love with him]] and leaves him for her ex. [[spoiler: He eventually gets back with ''his'' ex, Tricie]].
* DisposableFiance: For Ayla in ''The Mammoth Hunters'', as they actually go as far as getting engaged before Ayla calls it off - [[RunawayBride on the]] ''[[RunawayBride same day]]'' [[RunawayBride as their Matrimonial]], in fact. In this particular case, Ayla confesses that she doesn't believe he did anything wrong - it's just that's she's already in love with someone else and she believes he deserves someone who genuinely loves him back.
* HappilyMarried: He ends being this with [[spoiler: Tricie]], for the most part. It's mentioned they had some issues due to Ranec's emotional hang-ups about Ayla and [[spoiler:Tricie]] resenting this, but they eventually came to a mutual understanding.
* MissingMom: His mother drowned when he was a baby, as his family was trying to escape from inter-tribe violence across a river.
* MixedAncestryIsAttractive: He is the son of a Caucasian father and a black African mother (the former journeyed from what's now modern Ukraine). He is described as being attractive to many women among his father's people as a result of his exotic looks (dark skin, curly hair), which results in him sleeping with a number of them (therefore conceiving several children). He himself is happy that the Mother gave him such memorable features, because it makes him stand out.
* MrFanservice: Although Jondalar hogs most of the limelight, Ranec too gets his share of {{Fanservice}}-laden descriptions and explicit sex scenes.
* {{Nephewism}}: His aunt Nezzie helped his father raise him after his mother's death.
* NiceGuy: He's very friendly and open-minded, with a cheery disposition, [[{{Foil}} in contrast to Jondalar]], who can be a JerkWithAHeartOfGold. He takes it to DoggedNiceGuy levels towards [[LoveInterest Ayla]], doing everything he can to try and win her over.
* NotGoodWithRejection: A more {{justified|trope}} and sympathetic example. When Ayla tells him she won't be going ahead with their mating ceremony on the very day it's supposed to take place ''and'' that she's planning on leaving with Jondalar, he completely [[HeroicBSOD breaks down]]. He tearfully pleads with her not to leave and then becomes angry, telling her to go run off with "[her] flint knapper" and refusing to speak with her. Ayla doesn't blame him, feeling awful that she let things get to this point and broke his heart. He calms down later on, though he's still devastated.
* ThePerfectionist: He's a rather fastidious person with a keen eye for detail. This makes him an excellent artist, though he also gets rather anxious or frustrated when things he puts effort into don't turn out completely the way he wishes. The first time he and Ayla have sex, he's particularly flustered over the fact he climaxed and Ayla didn't; even though Ayla says she still found it enjoyable, he berates himself for being too hasty and insists on trying again so it will be "perfect" for her. When Ayla breaks up with him, he apologizes for not being perfect for her, only for Ayla to state she never wanted or needed him to be perfect, and that [[ItsNotYouItsMe this isn't the reason she's leaving]].
* ReallyGetsAround: He's popular with women and has had many lovers. It's noted that he's likely fathered a few children too, or as the Mamutoi put it, the Mother chose his spirit to create children, with it being noted that at least one little girl from another camp shares his darker coloring.
* TheRival: To Jondalar, for Ayla's affections.
* RomanticRunnerUp: To Jondalar, for Ayla. She even states that she may have been able to love him, if she hadn't met Jondalar first. He's bitter about it because he loves Ayla, but ultimately accepts there's nothing he can do to change the situation and wishes Ayla happiness. He even admits that deep down he suspected Ayla's heart truly lay with Jondalar, but hoped that with enough time and effort she'd come to return his feelings.
* UnrequitedLoveLastsForever: Claims that he will love Ayla for the rest of his life, and possibly ''even after''. Although he does eventually marry [[spoiler:Tricie, his former lover and mother of his son]], everyone believes that he'll never truly get over Ayla.

[[folder: Wymez]]
!!'''Wymez'''
->'''Appears in:''' ''The Mammoth Hunters''

Ranec's father and Nezzie's brother. A flint-knapper of the Lion Camp, who once went on a journey to Africa and met Ranec's mother there.
----
* BlackGalOnWhiteGuyDrama: Initially, the Aterian people - who are predominantly black - didn't care about European Wymez settling down and having a child with one of their women, and welcomed him into community. Sadly, this didn't last; white tribes who had moved to the area competed with the Aterians for land and resources. Despite Wymez trying to help resolve things diplomatically, assholes on both sides kept provoking each other and pushing for violence. Many Aterians began to distrust even Wymez and made him and his family unwelcome; fearing for their safety, Wymez and his mate decided it was better to leave before things got worse.
* TheBlacksmith: The Stone Age equivalent; he's the Lion Camp's best flint-knapper and potentially one of the best flint-knappers of all the Mamutoi. Jondalar, who himself is a talented knapper, believes Wymez is a genius and particularly admires his ability to create bifacially-worked blades, which Wymez himself learned from the Aterians.
* TheCharmer: Who'd you think Ranec got his charm and charisma from?
* CommonalityConnection: Despite the animosity between Wymez's son and Jondalar due to their shared love for Ayla, this doesn't prevent Jondalar and Wymez from becoming friendly over their shared passion and skill for flint-knapping.
* DoubleInLawMarriage: [[spoiler:He eventually ends up in one; he mates Tulie, who is the sister-in-law of his sister Nezzie. It's implied that their closeness due to Talut and Nezzie's marriage is what led to their relationship]].
* GoingNative: In his youth, he went on a long journey and is implied to have got as far as North Africa. He visited with a tribe called the Aterians and decided to stay with them after falling in love with an Aterian woman. Unfortunately, rising tensions and escalating violence between the Aterians and other tribes in the area [[SubvertedTrope made it unsafe for the family to stay]], so Wymez and his mate decided to return to the Mamutoi and raise their son there.
* HappilyMarried: He was to Ranec's mother until her death and still speaks of her with great fondness and sadness. [[spoiler: It's revealed in the sixth book that he entered an ExoticExtendedMarriage with Tulie and that they're all pretty happy together]].
* TheMourningAfter: Wymez has never had another mate or any other serious relationship from what we can tell following the tragic death of his wife; he's spent the last twenty or so years focusing on raising their son and doing his part for the Lion Camp. [[spoiler:It's not until ''The Land of Painted Caves'' that it's revealed he was finally able to marry again, to headwoman Tulie; this was also after Ranec himself found a mate and had a child of his own to raise]].
* NiceGuy: Like his son, he's very friendly and open-minded; he bears little-to-no animosity for anyone even if they have disagreements, he tries to see things from everyone's perspective and retains his general goodwill for people in spite of his tragic past.
* SecondLove: [[spoiler:Tulie]] becomes this for him.

!!!Crane Hearth
[[folder: Crozie]]
!!'''Crozie'''
->'''Appears in:''' ''The Mammoth Hunters''

The matriarch of the Crane Hearth, mother of Fralie, mother-in-law of Frebec and grandmother of Crisavec, Tasher and Bectie.
----
%%* CoolOldLady: When she stops being a {{Jerkass}}.
%%* HiddenHeartOfGold: Revealed to have one.
* DramaQueen: She has a habit of going into hysterics when she's upset; whenever she and Frebec get into arguments she often starts shrieking that he's intentionally trying to drive her out or even ''kill'' her. This backfires on her when she tries it with Talut and Tulie; when Tulie says Frebec is welcome to leave if he doesn't like it here, Crozie begins lamenting that now Frebec has gotten them all thrown out. Talut sharply tells Crozie that the Lion Camp would never cast out an old woman, a heavily-pregnant woman and her children, and that he finds it insulting she would even insinuate they would. Crozie has enough shame to shut up, as she was only looking for an excuse to criticize her son-in-law again rather than making serious accusations.
* HumblePie: She mellows out a bit after Ayla chews her out for making an already sick Fralie and her premature baby worse off and persuading her to work with Frebec to save them, which succeeds.
* IWasQuiteALooker: Mamut states Crozie was "a {{proud beauty}} in her youth" but is now more weathered-looking due to her advanced age, and suffers from associated aches and pains. She’s quite prideful over this, with Ayla trying to find ways to provide her with medicine and beauty treatments that wouldn't bruise her ego. Crozie tries not to show it, but she's very appreciative of this.
* LoveObstructingParents: She's an unintentional example of this to Fralie. After her first mate died, Fralie was considered a desirable woman and had a lofty bride price, due to the Crane Hearth's high ranking and her having been blessed with two children. However, she got few offers because no man wanted to put up with Crozie's cantankerous ways (because Fralie is the only family Crozie has left, anywhere she goes Crozie goes too). Eventually, Crozie had to lower Fralie's bride price, resulting in her mating the low-ranking Frebec, which Crozie is deeply unimpressed with.
* MeaningfulName: She's a bitter old ''crone'', is ''cross'' a lot of the time, and must be a real ''cross'' to bear if she lives at your hearth. But it also has "rosie" in it, suggesting a time long ago when IWasQuiteALooker.
* MyBelovedSmother: She's often overbearing towards Fralie, constantly complaining to her about how worthless her mate is and fussing over her poor health (apparently not realizing ''she's'' making it worse too). Fralie doesn't have the strength or confidence to stand up to her mother much and so just goes along with whatever she says or does; Ayla is quietly surprised when she hears Fralie contradicting Crozie for the first time (while they're surrounded by other women, mind you).
* ObnoxiousInLaws: To Frebec, constantly arguing with him and criticizing him. She makes it plain she views him as being 'beneath' her daughter. However, they get on better by the end.
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: Crozie originally had four children: three daughters and a son. Unfortunately, all her children save for Fralie died in a fire.
* PrincessInRags: She was once the headwoman of her own camp and her family, the Crane Hearth, was extremely prestigious. However, she lost almost everything save her eldest daughter after her lodge caught fire. She was forced to live off the charity of the Deer Camp, her son-in-law's people, but then got forced to move out after he died. It was mostly because of Nezzie's kindness that she and her family were invited to live with the Lion Camp. Crozie is very bitter about this and is often demanding because she was used to being respected and obeyed. However, by the end she's [[CharacterDevelopment started to come to terms with her loss]] and focuses more on supporting her family.
* TookALevelInKindness: She becomes much friendlier and less argumentative after Ayla saves Fralie and her baby.
* TooMuchAlike: One of the underlying reasons she and Frebec don't get along is because they both extremely prideful and despise any perceived disrespect.
* TragicKeepsake: She's been holding on to a white cape she made specially for her son for years. He never got to wear it because of his untimely death but Crozie couldn't bear to either throw it away or give it to someone else. She eventually decides to give it to Ayla for Racer to wear, so that people at the Summer Meeting won't mistake him for an ordinary horse and try to harm him. Crozie insists she use so it won't be wasted and out of gratitude for everything Ayla has done for the Crane Hearth.

[[folder: Frebec]]
!!'''Frebec'''
->'''Appears in:''' ''The Mammoth Hunters''

The second mate of Fralie and son-in-law of Crozie, who married into the Crane Hearth. He's the stepfather of Tasher and Crisavec, and father of Bectie.
----
* AlcoholicParent: It's strongly implied Frebec's mother was an alcoholic; Mamut mentions that Frebec's mother "had few accomplishments and little to offer except a taste for bouza" (a strong alcoholic drink the Mamutoi make). It's indicated this is partly why Frebec is so insecure, due to having been raised by a mother who spent most of her time getting drunk and lowered his own status.
* HappilyMarried: To Fralie in the end. It's obvious from the start that he cares for her, to the point of being overprotective, but their relationship becomes much happier when he starts supporting her properly and overcomes his insecurities over potentially losing her.
* HumblePie: When the heavily pregnant Fralie falls gravely ill and gives birth to a premature baby, his fear that they could die prompts him to swallow his pride and put aside his prejudice to allow Ayla to help them. She manages to save them both, after which Frebec is eternally grateful and begins to mellow out.
%%* HiddenHeartOfGold: Revealed to have one in the end.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: He comes from a low ranking family and his mate, who already has children from a previous relationship, thus raising her status greatly, is considered way out of his league. He is painfully aware of this and of Crozie's low opinion of him, and so acts like an arrogant jerk to cover up his insecurities. He eventually gets over it and develops better self-worth and confidence.
* InsecureLoveInterest: Although he and Fralie are mated with a baby on the way, Frebec remains afraid that he will lose Fralie because she's too good for him; Fralie remarks to Ayla that the first time they got together, he was hesitant to even touch her. Frebec can still hardly believe that Fralie chose to mate him out of all men and is determined to keep her at his side, to the point of being controlling. When he's faced with the possibility of Fralie not just leaving him but actually ''dying'', his desperation to save her overrides his insecurities.
* {{Jerkass}}: He's neglectful to his mate, bickers constantly with his mother-in-law, riles up everyone else and is very judgmental of Ayla and Rydag. But it's implied that a lot of this stems from feelings of inferiority, he genuinely loves Fralie and he turns into a NiceGuy by the end of the book.
* JerkassHasAPoint: When Frebec is arguing against Ayla being allowed to join the Lion Camp, Mamut and Talut both privately think that many of his arguments have sound logic and show him to be a lot cleverer than he appears, although he's unnecessarily rude about it and he's mostly doing it out of stubborn, misplaced dislike of Ayla.
* LickedByTheDog: One of the signs that Frebec isn't a completely terrible person is that when Wolf is scared, he runs to Frebec's hearth and keeps crying until Frebec picks him up despite his dislike of the pup. When Ayla says it's because Wolf sees Frebec as part of his pack, Frebec is surprised to find he feels a closer sense of belonging to the Lion Camp because of this, if even a wolf accepts him.
* PanickyExpectantFather: When Fralie goes into labor, he is extremely worried about her, frantically asking people if they think she and the baby will be alright. Aside from this being his first baby, [[JustifiedTrope he's right to be worried]], as Fralie is in poor health and her labor has started a month early; premature babies often die in this time period and Fralie's own life could be at risk. He's scared enough about losing them both that he puts aside his pride to ask Ayla's help.
* TookALevelInKindness: He becomes much nicer by the end of third book, even standing up for Ayla and Rydag (whom he was previously very judgmental of) when people make discriminatory remarks about them.
* TooMuchAlike: One of the underlying reasons he and Crozie don't get along is because they both extremely prideful and despise any perceived disrespect.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Fralie]]
!! Fralie
->'''Appears in:''' ''The Mammoth Hunters''

A member of the Crane Hearth. She is the daughter of Crozie, mate to Frebec and mother of Crisavec, Tasher and Bectie.
----
* ArrangedMarriage: Fralie's mother arranged her first mating to increase her camp's status and ties, as Crozie was leader of her own camp in those days, while Fralie's first mate was the son of the Deer Camp's headwoman. Fralie says her betrothed was older than her and more interested in her status than her as a person, but her mother talked her into it. After the disaster that destroyed their camp and family, Fralie had little choice but to mate him so [[MarriageOfConvenience he could provide for her and Crozie]], as they had nowhere else to go.
* ExtremeDoormat: Although Fralie is well-meaning, her lack of confidence and physical frailty means she tends to let both her mother and mate walk all over her, to the point of endangering herself and her unborn child. This stems back to her childhood, where she was persuaded by her mother to accept a betrothal despite disliking the man. Mamut remarks to Ayla that although he is sympathetic to Fralie, he feels that she could improve her situation by standing up to Crozie and Frebec but that she lacks will-power. Fralie later admits to Ayla that she doesn't want to intervene in their bickering because she understands where they're both coming from and doesn't want to hurt either of them, so she tries to remain passive.
* FallenPrincess: Her mother was once the headwoman of a camp and this, combined with her prestigious maternal ancestry, gave Fralie high social status in Mamutoi culture, which enabled Crozie to negotiate a betrothal between her and the son of another camp leader. Sadly, they lost it all when a fire destroyed their camp, also resulting in the death of all of Fralie's siblings. Her mate's camp took her in out of obligation but cast her and Crozie out after he died. Fralie was fortunate to have met Frebec and been able to move to the Lion Camp to at least have a roof over her head. She's far more accepting of this than her mother and just wishes to live in peace with her family.
* HappilyMarried: To Frebec in the end; she always cared for him although their relationship improves greatly once he stops fighting with her mother and takes proper care of her.
* MeaningfulName: Her name sounds a bit like 'frail', which she is at the start of the third book.
* NearAndDearBabyNaming: She names her newborn daughter Bectie, saying she hopes it will make Frebec happy. This strongly implies she named the baby after Frebec, as she's the first child of his hearth.
* PrematureBirthDrama: Despite attempts to stop her labor, her daughter Bectie is born a month earlier than expected; Fralie herself is in poor health and many people don't know if the baby will live, especially because in this time period there is little that even experienced healers can do to help babies born so soon. Luckily, Bectie is born alive and reasonably healthy despite being so small, with Ayla giving her parents and grandmother advice on how to care for her. Bectie soon puts on weight and begins to thrive, much to everyone's relief.
* ShrinkingViolet: She's rather meek and soft-spoken, especially when she's caught in the middle of Frebec and Crozie's arguments. However, [[CharacterDevelopment she begins]] [[GrewASpine standing up for herself]] more.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She tells Ayla the reason she chose to mate Frebec is that he adores her, treating like something to be treasured, and offered up everything he had (even though this wasn't much) to become her husband. She believes he's not a bad person deep down and is simply desperate to prove he's worth something, and says he still dotes on her in private. Fralie notes to Ayla that compared to her first mate, who had little interest in her beyond her status and then only mated her out of obligation, it was wonderful to have a man who would do anything just to be with ''her'' even though her status had fallen greatly.
* UnwantedSpouse: She makes it clear her first marriage was loveless; although her mate didn't mistreat her, they didn't have much affection for each other, and Fralie mostly went ahead with it because she and had mother had no one else to support them after losing everything in a tragic fire. Fralie thinks the only good thing she really got out of the marriage was her two eldest children. She much prefers her second mate Frebec in spite of his flaws and much lower status, because she got to choose him and he was very enthusiastic about mating her.
* UptownGirl: She's considered this to Frebec in her society. She's from a higher-ranking family and brought children from a previous relationship into the marriage, greatly raising her status and bride price. Fralie's mother frequently reminds Frebec of this fact, which inflames Frebec's insecurities. Fralie for her part chose to mate Frebec out of genuine affection.

!! Vincavec
->'''Appears in:''' ''The Mammoth Hunters''

A powerful and ambitious mamut, who founded and leads the Mammoth Camp and plots to mate Ayla to create a dynasty.
----
* AmbiguouslyBi: Vincavec is clearly into women, given his attraction to Ayla. It's possible he's also attracted to men; when he's trying to persuade Ayla to create a hearth with him, he says he doesn't mind if she brings Ranec with her and that he'll "take you both". He then adds "It would not be the first time. A man has a certain appeal, too!" It's not entirely clear if Vincavec means it wouldn't be the first time a man has chosen to co-mate with another man and had feelings for him, or if he himself has found men attractive before (especially given that in the setting, people with same-sex attraction often end up becoming One Who Serves the Mother, as Vincavec himself is).
* AntiHero: He's got a bit of sinister reputation, is overconfident and smug, and wants to marry Ayla purely to further his own ambitions, even though he's well aware she's with someone else [[spoiler: and is meant to be marrying him]]. However, he makes his intentions clear off the bat, so it's not like he trying to manipulate Ayla, and he also stands up for her when some people judge her Clan background.
* TheCharmer: He's incredibly compelling or magnetic, and seemingly has the ability to hypnotise people (it's [[MaybeMagicMaybeMundane unclear]] if this is purely psychological or a genuine magical ability). Ayla, however, is [[NoSell able to resist his attempts to hypnotise her]] when they first meet, impressing him.
* FacialMarkings: Like all mamuts, he has his face tattooed to mark him as One Who Serves the Mother, although it's noted that his tattoos are even more elaborate and numerous than most.
* FailedASpotCheck: His cunning plan to marry Ayla (or even become [[ExoticExtendedMarriage co-mates]] with Ranec) is undone when she chooses to get back with Jondalar, which he had not even considered.
* GoldDigger: The Stone Age equivalent. He wants Ayla to be his mate mostly because of her abilities as a hunter, healer and novice shaman would increase his own status. To his credit, [[AtLeastIAdmitIt he's at least honest about it]]. Ayla never seriously considers him, though, as she wants to be loved more than anything else.
* GracefulLoser: Though irritated, he accepts it when Ayla chooses Jondalar over him and grudgingly but willingly pays Tulie what she's due (she had bet against him that Ayla would pick Jondalar).
* HopelessSuitor: In all honesty, he was the only one who thought he had a chance with Ayla. Although she finds him attractive, she doesn't want what he offers, plus he completely overlooked her ongoing love for Jondalar.
* LoveDodecahedron: He doesn't actually turn up until the last third of ''The Mammoth Hunters'', but is instantly attracted to Ayla and makes a bid for her hand. Ayla is with Ranec at the time and they're betrothed, though she's also still carrying a torch for Jondalar.
* OddNameOut: Vincavec is one of the few Mamutoi characters whose name has more than two syllables.
* TheRival: To both Ranec and Jondalar for Ayla. However, he was willing to co-mate Ayla with Ranec if need be, and he didn't even really consider Jondalar much competition.
* RomanticRunnerUp: To Jondalar for Ayla (though he wasn't so much in love with her as he was attracted to her beauty, talents and the status she could bring him).
* SexyPriest: He's a member of his people's religious order and is noted to be an attractive and compelling man; even Ayla finds herself drawn to him to some extent and she isn't completely opposed to the idea of mating him. Vincavec is well aware of this and does everything he can to persuade Ayla to consider him.

----
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: She is in love with Ranec, but he has eyes for no one but Ayla (who would prefer to be with Jondalar). [[spoiler: He eventually gets back with her some time after Ayla broke up with him]].
* FirstGirlWins: [[spoiler:She and Ranec were in a relationship prior to him meeting Ayla; in ''The Land of Painted Caves'' it's revealed they got back together after Ayla left with Jondalar and are now married]].
* HappilyMarried: It's revealed in ''The Land of Painted Caves'' she's more or less happily mated to [[spoiler: Ranec]], once they sorted out [[spoiler:Ranec]]'s hang-ups about [[spoiler:Ayla]] and Tricie's jealousy over this.
* LoveDodecahedron: She is in love with Ranec, who loves Ayla, who still loves Jondalar but mistakenly believes he doesn't love her and vice versa...Yeah, it's complicated.
* LoveHurts: She's clearly hurt and bitter about Ranec abruptly dumping her to pursue Ayla, who he hasn't known for nearly as long. [[spoiler: This continued even after they got married, with Tricie being resentful of Ranec constantly moping over Ayla despite having agreed to mate her. They eventually reached an understanding and are now relatively happy together]].
* TheMissusAndTheEx: Ranec reluctantly introduces her to Ayla. The women are gracious to each other, though Tricie is clearly bitter about being replaced in Ranec's affections (especially as he had given her the impression he would mate her and raise their baby with her once she had completed her 'red-foot' duties)...which Ayla clearly picks up on. When Ayla breaks up with Ranec, she actually suggests he reconsider Tricie, as she truly loves him.
* RedheadsAreRavishing: She is an attractive redhead who came close to marrying Ranec (they had seriously discussed marrying and even had a child together), at least until Ranec met Ayla. She suggests he reconsider Tricie and he does seriously give it some thought; [[spoiler:it's revealed in the sixth book that she and Ranec eventually got back together]]. Tricie had also taken on a sacred role of introducing adolescent boys to the Gift of Pleasure, making her even more inherently attractive and drawing a lot of male attention, though the one man she truly wants is Ranec.
* PatchworkKids: Her and Ranec's son Ralev takes after both of them physically; he doesn't have Ranec's dark coloring, instead having his mother's paler skin and red hair, but his facial features are very similar to Ranec's. This causes many people to believe Ralev is the "son of Ranec's spirit". Upon seeing the little boy, Ayla notes the resemblance and takes it as further proof of her theory both men and women play a role in conception; she later assures Ranec that Ralev is just as much his son as he is Tricie's.

----
* TheBusCameBack: Jondalar and Thonolan briefly encounter her in ''The Valley of Horses'', where she rescues them from a swamp they'd gotten stuck in and invited them to stay with her camp, though they declined. Around a year later in the next book, she meets Jondalar again at the Mamutoi Summer Meeting and is introduced to Ayla.
* ConnectedAllAlong: Shortly after meeting her when she helps them get out of a swamp, Thonolan and Jondalar learn she's their friend Tholie's aunt. Later in ''The Mammoth Hunters'', Jondalar and Ayla learn that she's distantly related to Talut and Tulie, the leaders of the Mamutoi camp they're staying with.
* HyperAwareness: She's noted to be highly observant and good at making quick deductions about people that are often right. Ayla finds it a bit disconcerting at first, probably because she's not used to other Cro-Magnon being that attentive about small details. While Ayla herself is unusually attentive, Brecie often possesses knowledge of social or cultural contexts that Ayla lacks due to her upbringing.
