->''"It doesn't matter that they won't remember me. What matters is I helped."''

A spirit of compassion that took the form of a young mage who was killed by Templar abuse. First appeared in the tie-in novel ''Literature/{{Asunder}}'', and returns in ''Inquisition''.
-----
* AddedAlliterativeAppeal: It's a habit of his. He says that [[spoiler:Envy]] "forced their fury, their fight." [[spoiler: It slips away if he chooses to become more human during his personal quest.]]
* AlliterativeList: He refers to Red Templars as "dead and dark and done".
* AllLovingHero: Yes, in spite of his willingness to kill. His mind-reading ability is specifically tuned to whether someone is suffering emotionally, and/or whether he can do anything to remedy it. Consequently, his empathy is so universal that he even sees the fear and confusion constantly afflicting [[spoiler:[[DarkMessiah Corypheus]].]]
** However, this is amusingly subverted in one specific conversation. Cassandra asks Cole if he can see any hidden pain in Magister [[SmugSnake Livius Erimond]]. Cole simply replies, "No. Erimond is an ''[[PrecisionFStrike arsehole]]''."
* {{Angst}}: Cole is driven by, and feels, other peoples' Angst and is thus compelled to act to end it. However, he says that feeling it doesn't have a demoralizing effect on him at all; he uses it to help people, and that's it. However, he ''does'' have his own angst: regret over the murders he committed for the sake of helping people, shame for Rhys rejecting him and viewing him as a monster, and rage for the real Cole's treatment at the hands of the Templars.
* AntiHero: He's very sympathetic, but he's still an ex-serial killer. His genuine [[TheAtoner grief]] over the whole thing does help take off some of the edge, mind.
* AssShove: After reading Cassandra's mind one too many times, she dares him to see what she's thinking about now...
-->'''Cole''': My hat wouldn't fit there...
* TheAtoner: Ironically, while he was ''definitely'' more ambiguous back in the day, Cole's desperately trying to become an IdealHero instead, quite possibly making him the most purely heroic character in the party throughout the game itself.
* BadassBoast:
** For all his airiness, he manages to pull off a few.
--->'''Cole''': Can you see me?! You ''will'' see me!
** Or when seeing Venatori.
--->'''Cole''': Venatori. Hungry, hateful, ready to hurt people. And they're afraid. They should be.
** In the final battle, [[spoiler:if he's more of a spirit when Corypheus attempts to turn him against the party]]:
--->'''Cole''': I am unbound, and ''you'' are undone.
** Alternately, [[spoiler:if he is made more human]]:
--->'''Cole''': I am no demon, and you are no god.
* BaseBreakingCharacter: In-universe. The other party members are sharply divided on what to make of Cole:
** Vivienne, Sera, and Cassandra are adamantly against having him around and have to work their way ''up'' to "Mildly Uncomfortable." They are willing to talk to him if he is a human around ''Trespasser''.
** Varric and Solas are his closest friends who help him understand the mortal world, while spymaster Leliana is intrigued by his unique abilities and their potential uses.
** The other characters are in the middle: initially unnerved, but over time they warm up to him through party banter, especially if Cole is [[spoiler:made more human]].
* BecomeARealBoy: He has gone far down this road, compared to most spirits. [[spoiler:Varric can take him even further.]]
* BeenThereShapedHistory: It eventually comes out in party banter that Cole is responsible for a number of important unsolved crimes, including the assassination of a previous Lord Seeker, as well as a string of murdered mages, events which greatly escalated the mage-Templar conflict.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Being a spirit of mercy and compassion has the side effect of making him a terrifyingly effective assassin.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Evokes this in nearly all other party members - some from the start, some only after a period of adjustment:
** In a late conversation, it turns out Vivienne ''does'' care about Cole, but believes she shouldn't because of what he is. Cole promises to keep quiet about this revelation.
** Sera is terrified of him and would rather "it", or "that thing", stay away from her, though there are some occasions when she treats him more like an irritating younger brother than a demon. Later, she slips up and calls Cole "him", much to her chagrin, but Cole himself is utterly delighted.
** Blackwall takes an immediate dislike to Cole for poking around in his thoughts and memories. However, later he warms up to him. Cole seems equally sad for and wary of Blackwall. [[spoiler:Depending on how Cole grows, either as a spirit or as a person, he can be more antagonistic towards Rainier. They can promise to kill each other if they become their old selves.]]
** Varric 'adopts' (or at least Blackwall thinks so) him, nicknaming Cole "Kid." He teaches Cole about clothes (such as why the spirit's hat could be disturbing, but useful, and that he should not talk to his shoelaces), how to play cards, and how to tell knock-knock jokes. [[spoiler:He tries to help Cole become more human. TeachHimAnger is part of the process.]]
** Iron Bull is terrified of spirits in general, but nobody messes with Cole on his watch. In his own words, "You may be a weird squirrelly kid, but you're ''my'' weird squirrelly kid." Bull hires a girl to 'help' him, but since he is a spirit of compassion, it doesn't go the way the Qunari expected.
** Dorian and Cole are curious about each other. Their questions develop from how Cole exists (if he can change his form, if he bleeds on purpose) to Dorian's personal pain (about his father). When Cole inevitably prods too much and upsets Dorian, the mage is initially hurt and angry... but then he calms down, apologises, and explains to Cole that he understands how confusing his friend must find his feelings, but he can't deal with that topic at the moment. Later, after thinking it over, he'll do his best to explain his situation to Cole in a way the spirit understands.
** Solas, due to his familiarity with spirits, is the one person who has no problem understanding or talking with Cole about what he sees and senses, or explaining things in a way that Cole can grasp. Usually no one else has any idea what they're talking about. Solas doesn't mind, but Cole sometimes does. Interestingly, Solas seems to be the only one who can actually ''lock Cole out'' of his mind -- even the spirit is taken aback by this.
** This can also be invoked with the Inquisitor, if you complete his personal quest and allow him to remain. Asking questions of him on visits to Skyhold deepens the attachment, especially if you ask him about the things you overhear about his odd activities; he's pleased if you come to understand why he's doing what he does. He isn't quite comfortable explaining himself, but will tell you what you want to know because "you kept me out of kindness."
* BizarreAlienSenses: Cole can 'hear' and feel magic in ways that surprise the party mages. He approves if the Inquisitor becomes a Rift Mage, as they and Solas remind him of the Fade. He's less fond of Necromancy, as it involves manipulating wisps that might become spirits. He also describes magical whispers as being so loud he can ''see'' them, to the Inquisitor's confusion.
* BroughtDownToNormal: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]] if he [[spoiler: becomes more human. He's still an empath with some spiritual abilities but a lot of his old power fades. Played for laughs when he accidentally gives a little too much information about his and Maryden's sex life away and realizes, to his horrror, that he can't make the rest of the party forget that anymore.]]
* ButNowIMustGo: In the Epilogue of ''Trespasser'', if he's [[spoiler:become more of a spirit,]] he returns to the Fade to seek out other hurts to heal, though he says he'll return when/if he's needed.
* CannotTellAJoke: Varric tries to teach him knock-knock jokes. It's an uphill struggle, to say the least.
* ChasteHero:
** First seen in ''Asunder,'' when he doesn't seem to understand the real reason why Evangeline would be perturbed by the thought that he saw her changing. It doesn't even occur to him that others would object to him watching until that conversation. When she kisses him on the forehead later, he stumbles back in confusion.
** At one point, Iron Bull tries to buy him a prostitute to sort him out. [[spoiler: [[PlatonicProstitution They dance, Cole helps her work out her problems with her mother, and she lets him use her real name before they part as friends.]]]]
--->'''Iron Bull''': Well. That was five royals well-spent.
** He's confused when he realizes other spirits who have come through the Veil and taken a human form now "want a woman" when they never wanted one before. [[spoiler: He eventually slips out of this if he chooses to become more human during his personal quest.]]
** [[spoiler:Averted completely if he's more human, as he shacks up with Maryden Halewell, the bard. He mentions how her bodice [[SmellsSexy smells nice]], then [[DidISayThatOutLoud tries in vain to make everyone "forget" he said that as he used to be able to do]]. The Iron Bull is particular is overjoyed to hear it. That's right, Cole got to Second Base.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: Since ''Asunder'', Cole has learned to be brave and now seeks to use his powers to help others. Depending on how the Inquisitor handles his personal quest, Cole can also become [[spoiler:more like a person, or more spirit-like.]]
* ChildOfTwoWorlds: An unusual case as Solas theorizes that Cole is a Fade spirit who came through the Veil to take the form of a human young man in the physical world. However, Cole is not fully human nor fully a spirit, and feels a little lost and disconnected from both worlds (despite enjoying the powers and perks of both). His personal quest involves helping him [[spoiler:embrace one of his identities and become more human-like or spirit-like, gaining more perks of one form but losing the advantages of the other]]. No matter what the Inquisitor chooses, Cole is just more relieved to be more sure of himself.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Cole does his best to help people. Sometimes this means doing things like chucking turnips into a fire, leaving peeled plums lying on windows, stealing cheese and mint and leaving them in bowls around the place. However...
* TheCuckoolanderWasRight: If the Inquisitor is patient with Cole and doesn't force him to stop doing the odd things he does, it turns out there are reasons behind his actions. For example, the burning turnips [[spoiler:make a smell like the turnip soup a dying soldier's mother used to make; before he died, he thought he was home]]. Every weird thing he does has a gentle purpose.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: Despite being TheEmpath with {{Telepathy}}, Cole occasoinally (hilariously) misinterprets people's words and intentions. Especially this gem:
-->'''Vivienne:''' ''(to Solas)'' You should not encourage [[ItIsDehumanizing that thing]].\
'''Cole:''' ''(gasps)'' Solas is not a thing!\
'''[[DeadpanSnarker Solas]]:''' Well-said, Cole.
* CreepyBlueEyes: When visible under his fringe and his hat, they're disturbingly pale, prominent and bulging. Interestingly, they also signify his general [[InnocentBlueEyes innocence]].
* CreepyGood: He's thin and unkempt to the point of looking like a malnourished scarecrow, he speaks in an odd cadence, and says other people's thoughts out loud. And you can't forget that he's a spirit who exists outside the Fade in a human shape, which to most people automatically equals 'demon' or 'abomination'. The majority of the Inquisition's inner circle initially distrusts or is freaked out by him, and he doesn't make much effort to endear himself to them. Despite all that, though, he is the most determinedly moral member of the group (barring only the Inquisitor, possibly), his every action dedicated to helping people. [[spoiler:Even if you choose to let Varric help him become more human.]]
* CreepyShadowedUndereyes: He has prominent dark circles under his eyes, which serve to make his appearance all the more unsettling.
* DeadPersonImpersonation: The original Cole was starved to death by the Templars in one of the cells in the Spire's Pit. This Cole is a spirit or demon that decided not to let Cole die alone and assumed Cole's identity after he died, eventually forgetting its true nature.
* DespairEventHorizon: One of these is apparently his greatest fear. [[spoiler:Makes sense because, as a spirit, total despair would be akin to losing his purpose, which leads to transformation into a demon.]]
* {{Determinator}}: Seen in ''Asunder''.
** He followed the party through half of Orlais to keep Rhys safe after he becomes convinced Evangeline might be a threat. This is despite having no memory of life outside the White Spire and being absolutely terrified of most of his surroundings.
** In the fight with [[spoiler:Lambert]] at the end of the novel. Even after an absolutely ''vicious'' NoHoldsBarredBeatdown, he wouldn't back down.
* DeviousDaggers: {{Inverted}} on the whole, while an Assassin who's more than willing to kill Cole is compassion personified and completely honest about all his actions provided someone asks him. Even as a demon he tried to bring peoples crimes to light instead of covering things up and getting things for himself.
* DirtyMindReading: Mainly for RuleOfFunny. Occasionally he'll sense thoughts related to lust or UnrequitedLove, and like with other thoughts he tends to blurt them out... such as when Blackwall thinks about Josephine and her dress and also what's under her dress.
-->'''Cole''': The Iron Bull, a woman in the last village wanted you to pick her up and take her clothes off.\
'''Iron Bull''': ''[not missing a beat]'' Most people do.
* DiscardAndDraw: Either ending to his personal quest will have him lose some of his powers, but have others strengthened in response.[[spoiler: If he's more human, he loses a lot of raw power (and can't make people forget him any more), but in turn gains a better understanding of the human psyche that lets him help people in ways he couldn't before, and he can no longer be controlled by magic. If he's more spirit, then his powers strengthen (allowing him to sense pains that he couldn't before), but he loses that potential understanding.]]
%%* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything:
%%** Cole's personal quest involves the Inquisitor encouraging him to be [[spoiler:more human-like or more spirit-like]]. For a number of neurodivergent players (especially some degree of autistic), or those who feel he comes across as ambiguously autistic, it can feel like encouraging him to try to conform and "pass" as normal, or embrace what makes him different.
%%** For that matter, if he's encouraged to [[spoiler:become more spirit-like]], in ''Trespasser'' he can launch into a joyous speech about how he finally understands, "I'm not a wrong thing, a wreck, a ruin. I'm what I should be!" For many real-life players who struggle with {{internalized categorism}} (ableism, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc), this can feel like a personal anthem.
* DualWielding: He's primarily focused on Dual Daggers.
* EasilyForgiven: Subverted. He's a spirit of Compassion, but forgiveness is not a prerequisite. His first reaction to seeing the Templar that killed [[spoiler:the original Cole]] is to murder him. He also feels this way about the Grey Wardens if you don't banish them from Orlais; he is ''not'' pleased that they hurt so many people. And finally, he feels this way about ''himself'', and still feels terrible about what he did during ''Asunder''. During his personal mission, [[spoiler:Solas teaches him to also look at the pain a repentant man feels for past crimes.]]
** Zigzagged with Blackwall. From one of the first times they speak he tells Blackwall "don't do it again", but it's at the end of the line "You would stop it if you could. That is enough. But don’t do it again." After they've both completed their personal quests Cole tells Blackwall that if he becomes (that person) again, Cole will kill him, and if Cole becomes a demon again, Blackwall will kill Cole - as a form of reassurance, when Blackwall proves unwilling to see himself as a good person. He's linking their past deeds together and basically saying that they won't let each other backslide, not making a threat.
* TheEmpath:
** Halfway between this and {{Telepathy}}. Cole can read thoughts and emotions, but only in people who 'need help.' This translates to half of the people in Skyhold fortress, including all of your companions and advisers. Oddly, it does not apply to ''you'', even though you're bearing the burden of saving Thedas. He explains this as being a result of the Anchor blocking out anything else (like "trying to watch a flock of birds as they pass in front of the sun"). He can somewhat get around the Anchor by feeling how the Inquisitor's emotions affect others.
** It's unknown what kind of "upper limit" his abilities have. If [[spoiler: Iron Bull leaves the Qun,]] he can sense the corresponding relief of [[spoiler: Bull's old tamassran when he goes Tal-Vashoth]] despite them being continents apart. He can also sense memories attached to places or objects, such as recounting a lover's tryst that occured at the tree used to make Sera's bow, and in Frostback Basin he can relive the thoughts of Inquisitor Ameridan and his companions during events that occurred ''800 years previously'' (then again, spirits don't have concept of time). It's a GameplayAndStoryIntegration as well: He doesn't even need to be in the current party for you to get a "Cole Approves/Disapproves" notification. For example, if you save the villagers being imprisoned at the Sahrnia Quarry, Cole approves whether he is present or not. It can be inferred that he can sense what others are feeling when they are helped by Inquisition forces, feeling their relief will resonate within him positively (or negatively).
** His range can extend even further if the player chooses to [[spoiler:make him a full spirit]]. His Empathic abilities become far more sensitive and acute, allowing him to notice tiny sorrows he wouldn't have before.
--->'''Cole''': It has to be hurt. Or something to help the hurt.
* EvenTheLovingHeroHasHatedOnes: Cole might be an AllLovingHero, but he certainly thinks that [[SmugSnake Erimond]] is an ''arsehole''.
* {{Expy}}: Was clearly inspired by Tate from ''Series/AmericanHorrorStoryMurderHouse'', including hairstyle. Both are sensitive young men with both ruthless and unforgiving and caring, helpful sides (with the darker sides of the equation heavily emphasized in the more alternatingly-helpful-and-villainous Tate, who is quicker to be vicious and harsh and reserve his softer side for loved ones; the more goodwilled Cole flips it by being more generally benevolent and friendly and reserving harshness for “the bad guys”), who has a lot of intuitive knowledge about the magical/supernatural. Both magically appear out of nowhere to help many times, and seem quite nice to those who seem open to them enough not to be put off by their mysterious or more unsettling qualities. Both have murdered many. Both aren't fully human, and need the help of the protagonists to come to terms with their own nature. The original Cole and Tate even share elements in their [[TragicBackstory Tragic Backstories]] in having had cruel parents but been protective of their siblings.
* FateWorseThanDeath: Considers becoming a demon to be this. He is very disturbed when the Nightmare claims they are already not so different.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Several of the things he says hint at later companion developments.
** During a conversation with Solas (if the Inquisitor romanced him), Cole actually uncovers a ''lot'' of his backstory, but doesn't understand the context.
--->'''Cole''': He hurts, an old pain from before, when everything sang the same. You're real, and it means everyone could be real. It changes everything, but it can't. They sleep, masked in a mirror, hiding, hurting, and to wake them... ''[gasps]'' Where did it go?\
'''Solas''': I apologize, Cole. That is not a pain you can heal.
** [[spoiler:He's fully aware of what Blackwall did in his past]].
--->'''Blackwall''': They say you're a demon.\
'''Cole''': Yes. Or spirit. I want it to be spirit.\
'''Blackwall''': Either way, I know you're dangerous.\
'''Cole''': Yes. Like you.\
'''Blackwall''': What?\
'''Cole''': A sack on the side of the road, struggling. The boy runs from it, crying.\
'''Blackwall''': Fine, so you're ''dangerous'' and ''insane''.\
'''Cole''': You would stop it if you could. That is enough. But don't do it again.
** He randomly starts singing a song that's implied [[spoiler:to be the song the nobles' children were singing when Blackwall killed them]].
--->'''Cole''': ''Mockingbird, mockingbird, quiet and still, what do you see from the top of that hill? Can you see up? Can you see down?''\
'''Blackwall''': Wait.\
'''Cole''': ''Can you see the dead things all about town?''\
'''Blackwall''': How do you know that song?\
'''Cole''': It just came to me. Everyone says everyone knows it. The children knew it.
** Blackwall asks him a question to which Cole doesn't know the answer. [[spoiler:So Cole asks one to which Blackwall doesn't know the answer.]]
--->'''Blackwall''': How does a spirit become flesh anyway?\
'''Cole''': I don't know. How does a Warden become Grey?
* {{Foil}}:
** To Sera, another Rogue HairOfGoldHeartOfGold TagalongKid who joined the Inquisition specifically to help people. Both are also unkempt and tend to confuse companions with their unusual speech paterns. However, while Cole is a spirit-turned-person who [[SociallyAwkwardHero struggles with basic social cues]], Sera is a normal muggle who works well with other people. And while Cole loves the Fade (despite [[YouCantGoHomeAgain being unable to return]]) and especially approves of helping mages and minorities, Sera is ObsessivelyNormal, DoesNotLikeMagic and doesn't care for helping mages or elves.
** To Solas, another Fade-walking companion who tends to freak out other companions with their unusual views about the Fade, magic, and spirits. However, while Solas is an OldSoldier who gained social skills through years of practice and Fade-observation, Cole is implied to be very young and still struggles with basic concepts like how to dress or talk to others. And while Solas tends to keep his cards very close to his chest, Cole is very earnest and tends to blurt his true feelings and intentions (and the [[AMindIsATerribleThingToRead feelings of others]]) out to any who will listen.
* FreakOut: He goes into a shrieking fit if [[spoiler:he is brought into the Fade during "Here Lies the Abyss"]]. He notes that it should be familiar but instead it feels all wrong, as though he shouldn't be there, and suggests it causes both him physical and psychological distress. He's still upset once you return, describing it as like "looking at a picture of a picture" of himself. Both his muddled nature as a "physical" spirit and that area of the Fade being ruled by a very powerful demon who plays on Cole's fears of how they are NotSoDifferentRemark with each other seem to play a part.
* GhostAmnesia: Though he may or may not be a ghost, he has no clear memory of his previous life.
* GameplayAndStoryIntegration:
** Owing to his nature as a spirit, Cole can sense other's feelings. Regardless of whether he is in the current party or not, you will gain approval from him, mainly from helping people. Also when entering Stealth, he will turn into translucent green instead of white outline.
** If his personal quest isn't done, regardless of your approval with him, Cole may not be able to join the final battle because he has no means to protect himself from Corypheus' binding.
* GlassCannon: The Assassin class lets Cole be an incredibly strong rogue who can deal high amounts of damage, especially if built to use sneaking skills to attack enemies from behind to get flanking damage. Since Cole defaults on using daggers, he tends to take a lot of damage as a result of being in the middle of battle, and it isn't uncommon to see him jump in, do a lot of damage, then get dropped to low HP before the player can realize it. This can be mitigated with proper equipment and skill distribution (and sometimes, controlling him outright to deliver full utilization of his skillset), however.
* GuardianAngel: If you let Solas encourage Cole to reaffirm his nature as [[spoiler:[[OurSpiritsAreDifferent Compassion]], Cole becomes even more skilled at seeing into people's hearts, [[http://youtu.be/wgNZg52q9_g?t=12m24s which he uses to comfort and reassure them as much as he possibly can, for anybody.]] ]]
* GuestStarPartyMember: During the fight against the ArcVillain of Champions of the Just main quest, Cole will join the battle to eliminate Envy Demon. Unlike his counterpart Dorian during In Hushed Whispers, the player is yet to gain control of him.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: He may be creepy, but Cole joins the Inquisition simply to make people safe. His hair, when you can see it under his hat, is a near-translucent pale blond.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: Cole loves being able to sense others' needs, as it means he gets to figure out how to help them.
* HumanityEnsues: If you side with Varric on Cole's personal quest, [[spoiler:Cole becomes visible to everyone and can no longer wipe people's memories, but his emotions become more complex, and his ability to think like mortals do is considerably improved. He can still read other people's thoughts and emotions, though, and he claims he'll always be able to as long as he still has his memories of the Fade.]] By the end, Cole becomes so human that [[spoiler:if brought into the Final Battle, he resists Corypheus's attempt to bind him with a simple "no". He is ''very'' pleased with himself afterwards.]]
* HumanoidAbomination: Subverted. Cole's pretty eerie, and certainly ''not'' truly human, but he's kind, humble, and only wants to help.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: The original Cole died blaming his magic for the misery in his life. That is why the Spirit of Compassion that took his form is a rogue instead of a mage.
* IWasNeverHere:
** His power to make people forget him allows him to help them without them realizing it. He also explains that it's a defense mechanism, because if he screws up, he doesn't have to fear reprisal and can always [[SaveScumming make another go at it]]. [[spoiler:He can't do this anymore if he becomes more human. On the plus side, this forces him to actually think before doing anything. He is also able to start learning from his mistakes.]]
** He also has an Assassin specialization skill with this exact name, which truly helps eliminate Stealth cooldown every time he scores a kill.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Given his ability to sense what causes people pain, Cole has unique insight to the psyches of many people. Unfortunately, he tends to vocalize what he senses, which tends to bring up traumatic memories and emotions for others (or if he's doing any DirtyMindReading, memories and emotions that are just plain embarrassing). Cole doesn't seem to understand why someone might not want him to do this - spirits in the Fade do it as readily and effortlessly as speech. [[spoiler:He starts to improve on this front if he becomes more human.]]
* InternalizedCategorism: Rhys rejecting Cole for being a "demon" hurt him deeply, and is implied to be part of the reason he became flesh like a person. This is even more apparent if you side with Solas in his personal quest, where he says he's happy that you and Solas accept and believe in him. By ''Trespasser'', [[spoiler:spirit Cole gives a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wYruGvoCXA joyous speech]] about how he's finally realized there's nothing wrong with being a spirit.]]
-->'''Cole''': It means I belong here! Helping, healing the hurt. I'm not a wrong thing, a wreck, a ruin. I'm what I should be!
* IsThisWhatAngerFeelsLike: When he meets [[spoiler:the real Cole's killer]], he goes into a ''murderous rage''. Both Solas and Varric offer solutions to help him deal with it, and you must choose which one to follow. Varric's method is more in line with this trope, [[spoiler:to help Cole learn to deal with emotions and use them to grow.]]
* KleptomaniacHero: Because people don't notice him, and he can make them forget him even if they do, he often simply walks away with things. Apparently, several daggers have gone missing throughout Skyhold, but no one can remember who they saw taking them; he's got a whole barrel full of them hidden somewhere. [[spoiler:Of course, Cole was merely stashing them so their owners wouldn't use them in a fit of rage later.]]
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: The way he describes his powers is that he removes himself from the person's memory, and "then their mind makes a shape that makes sense" to them without him.
* LethalHarmlessPowers: Cole's abilities of telepathy and making people forget him are largely harmless, and he even uses them to help people. However, those same abilities can be used in battle to make him a scarily effective assassin.
* LetsWaitAWhile:
** If Cole was made more human and does not accompany the Inquisitor [[spoiler:in the final battle with Corypheus]], when spoken to in the Great Hall, Cole expresses possible interest in intimacy in the future.
--->'''Cole''': The servants are drinking. Some of them are drinking while lying down.\
'''Inquisitor''': Do you have interest in joining them?\
'''Cole''': I don't know. Not now. It makes things more complicated, and I'm not ready. Someday, maybe.
** When exploring the dialogue further, it is revealed the Cole wasn't referring to the drinking.
--->'''Inquisitor''': I don't think it was about the drink. I think it was something else.
* LiteralMinded: He doesn't necessarily get jokes (as referenced above), terms and euphemisms, and speech devices. For example, he thinks the term "friendly fire" implies Dorian's fire spells won't hurt him, and is confused if Dorian asks him if a wooden duck he left on his bed "was him".
* MadOracle:
** He has shades of this: he speaks very cryptically, has trouble understanding concepts most find self-evident (like how people refer to the Inquisition "like it's a person"), and has no real idea of what he is metaphysically, although the Litany of Adralla can affect him, making it clear that he's a Fade being of some kind. He also has empathic and/or telepathic abilities and can [[spoiler:enter another person's mind, which helps the Inquisitor self-exorcise Envy after Cole got dragged in on the demon's coat-tails by accident.]]
** More confusingly, he can be found making references to real-world movies, TV and other games. He even makes references to Creator/BioWare's [[Franchise/MassEffect other sprawling RPG franchise.]]
* ManChild: He's taken on the form of a young man in his early twenties, but he's very childlike in mentality, to the point that both Varric and the Iron Bull call him "Kid" and Blackwall sometimes compares him to an infant. Since he's a spirit, it's unclear just how old he ''really'' is, or if something like age even applies, but his lack of experience with the real world can come across as childlike when it's not just alien. His personal quest is essentially deciding how he will mature: will it be as a spirit, or as a human?
* TheMatchmaker: Serves as this [[spoiler: if he becomes more spirit-like]]; the Inquisitor can take him to lunch in Val Royeaux, and watch as he does a number of small things to help the people there, particularly with relationships. This comes to the forefront in ''Trespasser'', as he plays matchmaker for Maryden, the Inquisition's bard, [[spoiler: whom he would have dated himself had he become more human-like]].
* MathematiciansAnswer: He says it's better that the people he helps forget him afterwards; it's "frightening" if he stays.
-->'''Inquisitor''': For you, or for them?\
'''Cole''': Yes.
* MercyKill:
** His victims are all people who were in such misery that death would be a relief. Eventually subverted when he stops killing people because he realizes that doing so only brings Rhys trouble and makes him unhappy. He still prefers mercy killings to letting people rot in prison, as the original Cole died from his jailers' neglect.
** In one conversation, you can either let him do this to a patient in agony or persuade him to give them a chance. He generally disapproves of imprisonment and approves of execution.
* MessyHair: Cole doesn't really seem to care about his appearance much, even when he's not hiding from Templars in their own stronghold. [[HypocriticalHumor Amusingly]], he calls Blackwall's hair a mess of tangles in need of a hairbrush. And that's only on the ''outside''.
* AMindIsATerribleThingToRead: Subverted. Cole seems lost and miserable all of the time, and he always feels someone else's pain. But if the Inquisitor mentions feeling sorry for him, Cole doesn't understand why. He doesn't have a problem with feeling others' pain because means he can help them fix it.
* MirrorCharacter: He and Blackwall, who've both done things in the past they now see as horrible and want to make up for it. Cole sees this from early on, Blackwall takes longer.
-->'''Cole''': We can change, if we want it enough.
* MyGreatestFailure: Considers his inability to do anything for the original Cole other than hold his hand during his last moments to be his greatest failure as a spirit of Compassion. The entire reason he became "Cole" was to honor the original Cole's memory and allow him to live on in some way.
* TheNeedless: Due to his nature, he doesn't need to eat, sleep or really do many "normal" things at all to sustain himself. [[spoiler: If he becomes more human, it's mentioned that he may need to start eating, though he doesn't seem too fond of the idea yet.]]
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: How the three mage companions regard him: Solas is completely understanding of his nature as a spirit, and helps Cole cope with his quasi-spirit/human nature, Vivienne regards him as a demon and a [[ItIsDehumanizing thing]], and Dorian's curiosity is piqued, often asking InnocentlyInsensitive questions towards Cole, and often being stumped by Cole's responses.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: David Gaider teased his appearance in the game before it was confirmed by tweeting that he pictured Cole as looking like Creator/EvanPeters.
* NoSocialSkills: Despite being a Spirit of Compassion who can [[TheEmpath sense people's pain]] and does his best to help them, he hasn't quite figured out how social skills work.
* NotQuiteHuman: Cole looks the part of a young man, if perhaps a slightly unkempt one, and when the team debates whether or not to allow him to stay, Solas insists that, for all intents and purposes, he may as well be one as far as the Inquisition is concerned - but Cole is a spirit.
* ObliviouslyEvil: Before he met Rhys, Cole went around {{Mercy Kill}}ing mages and genuinely believed he was helping them. Rhys convinced him that killing them was wrong, and he now says that he was a demon during that time.
* OddCouple: With...[[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} most of the characters, actually.]] He seeks to help Leliana in secret, knowing what happened to her, and can be seen feeding her birds. Likewise, Blackwall, Varric, and Bull know he's not all there and seek to help him out. [[spoiler:He can end up with Maryden, as said below, or get her and Krem to hook up.]]
* OfficialCouple: In the ''Trespasser'' DLC, he may decide to date Maryden the bard [[spoiler:if he becomes more human]].
* OptionalPartyMember: The Inquisitor can refuse to let Cole join the Inquisition because there's a good chance that he's the very type of being the organization is trying to fight.
* OurSpiritsAreDifferent: He is some sort of Fade being that took human form without having to possess someone. Solas suggests in a conversation that he may be a Spirit of Compassion, which is confirmed by the Spirit of Command in Crestwood.
* PayEvilUntoEvil: When a Cole who has embraced his spirit side is asked how he feels killing enemies, he says that it hurts him, but they made their choice and so he will be merciless.
* PutOnABus: If you don't complete his personal quest, then Cole eventually leaves the Inquisition and doesn't appear in ''Trespasser''.[[spoiler: He'd be a liability in the final battle since Corypheus's bindings will only fail if he is a pure spirit (so Solas's amulet will work on him) or becomes human (so he can't be bound like that anymore).]]
* PrecisionFStrike: "Erimond is an ''arsehole''."
* PsychicBlockDefense: His personal quest is about acquiring one to ensure no one can bind him and use him to hurt people. He will not be taken to the FinalBattle if his personal quest is not completed because of the absence of this trope. One method is an amulet that makes him immune to binding spells, but it doesn't work unless [[spoiler:he's more completely a spirit. If brought to the final battle, it will indeed protect him against even ''Corypheus''. Afterward, he's beside himself with gratitude for the Inquisitor bothering to keep him safe. The other solution is to bypass the problem entirely by making him human; after all, humans can't be controlled like that.]]
* PsychicNosebleed: After overusing his powers near the end of ''Asunder''.
* PsychicPowers: He can sense other people's pain, misery and sorrow, and is driven by a means of correcting it by any means necessary. Also, while he can't see the "future", per se, he has astounding powers of reasoning. For example, he knows the right time to take other people's weapons so that they won't injure someone later that day in the heat of the moment.
* PsychoKnifeNut: He uses a knife throughout ''Asunder'' and was once a serial killer. He's also a double dagger-wielding Rogue in ''Inquisition''.
* SaveScumming: What his memory wiping power allows him to do when using words to soothe someone's woes. If he doesn't get it right, he wipes the last moment from their memory and tries again.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: If his approval drops low enough, he decides the Inquisitor doesn't care about people and leaves, making them forget him if necessary.
* SecretKeeper: Played with. Cole's PsychicPowers combined with his [[NoSocialSkills lack of social graces]] means he gets access to a lot of extremely personal (and occasionally embarrassing) information, much of which he tends to blurt out on the spot. However, he does seem to have a good sense of what secrets are harmless, and which ones would cause real problems if he said them out loud, and he will keep mum on the latter. In the case of [[spoiler:Blackwall and Solas, he is very much aware of who [[DeadPersonImpersonation they]] [[GodWasMyCopilot are]], and chooses to keep their identities secret until the former comes clean on his own, and the latter leaves the Inquisition.]]
* SelfMadeOrphan: [[spoiler:The real Cole's father killed his mother after learning that Cole was a mage. Cole accidentally asphyxiated his sister while trying to keep her quiet when they were hiding from their father. Cole eventually managed to kill his father with a knife before he was eventually taken to the White Spire by the templars, and once the spirit of Compassion takes his form, he uses this same knife throughout ''Asunder''.]]
* SerialKiller: He once stalked the dungeons of the White Spire Circle, [[MercyKill mercy killing]] the mages who were imprisoned there.
* SeriouslyScruffy: He seems to dress himself in whatever rags he finds lying around. Could be out of necessity, since he can't really go and buy clothes somewhere, but it's also clear from various bits of dialogue that Cole's grasp of the concept of "clothing" is hazy at best. In fact, in one set of armor he has the shirt on backwards.
-->'''Cole''': ''[upon seeing Cullen naked]'' It comes off! I didn't know it came off!
* ShipperOnDeck:
** Cole is definitely not an authority on romance, but he delights in other people's happiness and is an enthusiastic supporter of anything that gives them joy, including relationships. For example, he shows great approval to the Inquisitor who decides to seal their lips to a young couple having a secret romantic rendezvous at Crestwood. It's particularly notable with his fellow companion Dorian, over whom Cole tends to fret.
** In the ''Trespasser'' DLC, he may decide to ship Maryden the bard with either Krem or [[spoiler:if the Bull's Chargers were sacrificed]] Zither [[spoiler:if he becomes more of a spirit]].
** An interesting case with Solas and Lavellan in that [[spoiler:after Solas breaks things off, Cole can try to tell Lavellan his plans twice, contrary to his usual role as SecretKeeper, to get them back together. In ''Trespasser'', when the Qunari reveal that the "agent of Fen'Harel" they're hunting is Solas, a female romanced Lavellan who chooses the heart icon "We have to save Solas" earns strong disapproval from every companion... ''except'' for Cole, who "Greatly Approves" even if you had already maxed out his approval.]]
** If the Inquisitor chooses to [[spoiler:reunite Celene and Briala]] at the Winter Palace, Cole most strongly approves since he can sense their [[AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther lingering feelings for each other]] and supports them getting back together.
* SpannerInTheWorks: To [[spoiler:the Envy demon]] in "Champions of the Just." He happened to be around and accidentally got dragged into the Inquisitor's mind, where he decided to do as he always does: help. Even if the Inquisitor saves the Apostates instead, Cole still interferes by tagging along with the Red Templars to Haven and helping the Inquisition there.
* SpeaksInShoutOuts: {{Downplayed}} but his conversations with Solas regularly dip into movies and stories that have angels as a central theme, he'll also spout various non-sequiturs that reference other well-known movies or Bioware games.
* StealthExpert: His personal Assassin tree is filled with boosts to augment his stealth skills, fitting for a boy with the power of {{Invisibility}}.
* SympatheticMurderer: He only killed because it was the only way he knew to sustain himself. He even asked for the victim's permission.
* TagalongKid: He presents himself this way to the Inquisition, saying he only wants to help and will make sure he's no trouble to anyone. While other characters continue to call him "kid" throughout the game, [[SubvertedTrope he's actually quite useful]] and with him actually being a spirit, who knows how old he really is.
* TeachHimAnger: Varric's approach to helping Cole. The Inquisitor can later agree in a followup conversation.
* ThrownDownAWell: The original Cole died after being tossed in an obliette.
* TomatoInTheMirror: In ''Asunder,'' Lambert manages to banish him with the Litany of Adralla, forcing Cole to accept that he is indeed a Fade spirit.
* TookALevelInBadass: He eventually discovers how to use his invisibility to give him a huge advantage in combat.
* UndyingLoyalty:
** He would go to the ends of the earth to save his only friend, Rhys. In ''Inquisition'', he extends this to anyone who uses their power to help people.
** [[spoiler: WordOfGod says that Cole knew who Solas was all along. In spite of this, he never comes close to revealing his identity - or at least not on purpose. Contrast Blackwall, of whose identity he was also aware from the start, and with whom he has several conversations containing veiled references to the Warden's crimes.]]
* {{Unperson}}: Happened to him sometime in the past. With the exception of Rhys, the people that see him forget him shortly after. It eventually turns out that the Templars erased all evidence of the original Cole to cover up the mistake they made by accidentally killing him.
* VerbalBackspace: Combined with UnPerson and IWasNeverHere. If Cole makes a mistake while trying to help a person, he can cause them to forget and then try over and over until he gets it right.
* WalkingTheEarth: In ''Trespasser'', [[spoiler:if Cole becomes human, then Cole and his girlfriend Maryden wander Thedas spreading joy wherever they go.]]
* WeHelpTheHelpless: He joins the Inquisition because he wants to help those in need in whatever way can, without caring if anyone will even remember him for it.
* WhatIsThisFeeling: If you choose to [[spoiler:make him more human]], Cole will struggle to grasp the concept of {{angst}} and wonders when it will go away. You can choose several answers for him.
* YouAreNotAlone:
** Cole makes sure of this, even if you can't remember exactly that it was him.
** [[spoiler:If Varric is allowed to help Cole become more human,]] people will more often remember that it was Cole who talked to them. While this makes it harder to do things over if he makes mistakes, being more human means he understands the right thing to say more often; he also notes that knowing there's an identifiable person who cares about your pain is far more comforting to people than a vague sense of not being alone.
--->'''Cole''': I would get you one, but they see me in the kitchen now. They ask if I want a glass of water, a piece of bread. They want to help me. It should be the other way around.
--->'''Cassandra''': Sometimes it's difficult to accept the kindness of others, but it can be worth the effort.
** [[spoiler:He held real Cole's hand to provide him solace during his final moments as death is about to claim him.]]
* YouCanSeeMe: He's pleasantly surprised if someone can see him, and doubly so if they ''remember'' him.
* YouCantGoHomeAgain: When Vivienne accuses him of wanting to claim Solas as a host so he will never have to return to the Fade, Cole claims that he ''can't'' return to the Fade. [[spoiler:If his nature becomes more spirit-like, he says he could go back if he wanted at any time, but he wants to stay and help.]]

Sera is an elven rogue archer, and previously a member of the Friends of Red Jenny. Impatient, brash, and with little sympathy for powerful leaders, Sera wears her heart on her sleeve and has nothing but [[FlippingTheBird two fingers]] to give to anyone who questions her way of living. However, she sees potential in the Inquisition and joins to represent the interests of the common folk.
----
* AbusiveParents: Sera implies her human foster mother was this on an emotional level, [[ParentsAsPeople albeit apparently unintentionally]]. [[spoiler:She told Sera the baker didn't like her for being an elf to hide the fact that the cookies she gave Sera were actually the baker's, as her foster mother was unable to bake cookies herself. As a result, Sera's still dealing with InternalizedCategorism. That said, the Inquisitor can do an in-universe AlternativeCharacterInterpretation and suggest that her foster mother was "just trying to be good to" Sera by buying her cookies but went about it the wrong way due to her own pride, and [[ParentsAsPeople accidentally hurt Sera in the process]],]] and Cole can also reveal in party banter that [[spoiler:"[[ParentsAsPeople She tried.]]" -- on both accounts Sera notably refuses to answer to or just deflects away from the suggestions. Also, while venting at the Inquisitor later in the game regarding the cookie issue, she notably pulls up just short of saying she ''hated'' Lady Emmald, instead stopping herself and glumly changing the subject by moving onto Emmald's eventual death. Despite being hurt by her, she really does seem to have loved her adopted mother.]]
* AchievementsInIgnorance: In party banter, the Iron Bull asks Sera how she managed to stuff an active bee hive into Cullen's training dummy. Sera responds she doesn't remember, as thinking about it too hard causes things to go sideways. Bull counters that most people would pay attention to a hive of angry bees, and Sera retorts that that's why most people get stung.
* ActionGirl: A largely self-taught archer whose idea of fun consists mainly of getting into (and out of) trouble.
* AgreeToDisagree: If a non-Elven Inquisitor tells Sera [[spoiler:they believe what they saw at Mythal]], Sera will be annoyed but can ultimately decide she's fine with them believing whatever they want as long as they don't talk about it too much. An Elven Inquisitor gets no such leeway, as even hesitating to agree results in [[spoiler:Sera giving an ultimatum: either agree the entire elven religion is fake demon worship, or get dumped / suffer a massive approval loss]].
-->'''Sera:''' I mean, I've dated some right tits, but you're the Herald of Andraste! You keep saying this, you'll sound like an idiot!\
'''Non-Elven Inquisitor:''' Is this a fight? Because you're calling me a lot of names.\
'''Sera:''' It's not a fight. You can believe whatever stupid stuff you want.
* AggressiveCategorism: If you're an elf who accepts even some "elfy" beliefs, you ''must'' be fully "elfy" and thus embrace all of their toxic attitudes, such has hatred of humans and intolerance of non-elfy elves like her. If you're nice and accepting, then you must be "not too elfy."
* AmazonChaser: She is fascinated with Qunari women. She'll banter playfully with other women, but with a Qunari Inquisitor sometimes the only thing she'll be able to say is "...woof."
* AnalogyBackfire: Varric theorizes that Sera doesn't find his books engaging because she ''does'' things; she can't enjoy sitting down reading about other people doing exciting things since she does exciting things every day. It'd be like... if she took up knitting. Her response?
-->'''Sera''': Ah, knitting is brilliant! It's ''[[MundaneMadeAwesome stabby-sewing!]]''
* AngerBornOfWorry: She can potentially lash out at the Inquisitor at least twice, romanced or no.
** She can lash out at the Inquisitor after [[spoiler:the Fade mission, telling them to never do that to her again as she doesn't know how to deal with the feeling of them stuck in the Fade. It is clearer if she was not present on that mission.]]
** She gets another moment if you [[spoiler: drink from the Well, with a heavy implication she believed that something or someone might have ''possessed'' the Inquisitor, and as such aims an arrow at their face when next they speak until the Inquisitor proves otherwise.]]
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: Aside from Cole, Sera is in her early twenties at the most compared to the rest of the Inquisition who are likely much older, and acts very childish and doesn't harbor much emotional maturity until ''Tresspasser''. Sera is notably the only companion who was not already an adult during the events of ''Origins''.
* BackhandedApology: If the Inquisitor [[spoiler:drank from the Well of Sorrows]], Sera will point a drawn arrow at their face. When Sera sees [[spoiler:they're not possessed]], she cheerfully brushes it off and expects you to do the same. If the Inquisitor calls her out on it, Sera defensively snaps, [[NeverMyFault "Fine, all right. Sorry I don't know how to deal with rubbish no one was meant to."]]
* BackhandedCompliment: Like Solas, most of the nice things she says about a romanced Inquisitor Lavellan include jabs against the Dalish and praise Lavellan for not being like ''other'' Dalish.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe:
** Part of why Sera latched onto the Red Jennies so hard as a kid is they were the first people she encountered who didn't care what she was or where she came from (elf, noble, human, whatever), as long as she was among and helped the common folk.
** Her friendship and romance progress along these lines. Sera often heavily implies the Inquisitor is the first person to fully accept and support her as she is, even at her worst. While Sera has "friends" among the Jennies and has had casual flings before, she implies the Inquisitor is the first person she's really opened up to [[spoiler:particularly the cookie rooftop scene]] who completely accepted and didn't judge her.
* BeeBeeGun: After recruiting her, one of the war council missions you'll receive is "Inquisition Needs Beeeeees!" which unlocks a new grenade weapon: a jar full of angry bees, which turn out to be [[LethalJokeWeapon unnervingly effective]] as a weapon.
* BerserkButton: Anything "elfy," whether Dalish elves, city elves, or nondescript "elfy" elves like Solas, tend to earn her ire. Tied into this is being made to feel as though she's "not smart enough", which is heavily implied to stem from past trauma involving trying to "elfy" elves.
* BlackAndWhiteMorality: Due to her relative youth compared to the other companions, Sera subscribes to this more than most other companions. You either agree with all her opinions and are "good," or you don't and you're "bad" and deserve whatever bad things happen to you. She more or less states that people who aren't in her pre-approved categories aren't "really people."
* BloodKnight: When it comes to dragons, giants, or other powerful monsters (besides demons), Sera is very enthusiastic about fighting. She also enjoys Red Jenny missions because it lets her kill "bad" nobles and guards with impunity.
* BigEater:
** According to Blackwall, she downed a positively ''huge'' meal while dining with him once - he has no clue where she puts it all. In another conversation, she says she eats a lot because she knows what it's like to be truly hungry.
** You can overhear a conversation between Josephine and her assistant over Sera going through the kitchens. She wonders how an elf can eat so much jam!
* BoisterousBruiser: Sera's personality tends to be geared more towards action than longterm cerebral planning.
* BoomerangBigot: Despite being an elf herself, she doesn't identify as one and seems to dislike anything specifically elven in turn, especially the Dalish. This is [[FreudianExcuse because]], as an elf adopted by a human, she was the subject of FantasticRacism from both humans and elves. Humans shunned her for being an elf and elves shunning her for [[NoTrueScotsman being too human]]. She chose to shun her elven side; carefully making sure she never does anything related to elf culture -- including romancing an elf Inquisitor, because elves marrying elves is what they normally do to preserve their recessive, race-specific traits. By ''Trespasser'', she's managed to work through some of her issues and is more understanding, particularly to an Elven Inquisitor she's friends with/has romanced, though she still has some biases. This results in a unique variation of GameplayAndStoryIntegration; Sera can wear "Human-trained" race specific armor, rather than "Elf-trained".
* BoyishShortHair: Dialogue implies that she cut it herself with a hunting knife when it got too long and covered her eyes.
* BrutalHonesty: Sera isn't afraid to speak her mind. An Inquisitor can even ''encourage'' her to keep doing this in order for them to remain guarded.
* BuffySpeak: She uses a ''lot'' of this, to the point that other characters sometimes have a hard time understanding her.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Sera may be childish, irreverent, and vulgar, but she is still one of the best archers in the Inquisition, and self taught at that.
* CannotSpitItOut: If she was romanced, in ''Trespasser'', [[spoiler: she tries to work herself up to propose to the Inquisitor many, many times by writing it in her diary.]]
* CantArgueWithElves: A strange inversion where Sera has decided human commoners are automatically accepting, while "elfy" elves are ''automatically'' [[CantArgueWithElves elitist bigots]]. Sera claims "elfy" elves reject everyone not elfy like themselves, and there's no way for the Inquisitor to meaningfully counter-argue. Even if a Dalish Inquisitor is completely accepting and supportive of Sera's non-elfy status and helps every non-Dalish they meet all game, even merely ''hesitating'' to agree with Sera's scorn for anything "elfy" [[spoiler:particularly after Mythal]], causes Sera to harshly reject [[spoiler:and possibly break up with]] them. However, any time the Inquisitor tries to argue, their dialogue is [[OpenMouthInsertFoot suddenly framed as trying to change Sera to be more elfy]], allowing Sera to be framed as indisputably correct.
* CantTakeCriticism: Sera never reflects on her own actions in conversations with the Inquisitor, and if the Inquisitor calls her out on any questionable decisions, she gets ''very'' upset.
* CategoryTraitor: And proud of it. Sera tries very hard to be everything most elves think an elf ''shouldn't'' be; she lives in the present instead of trying to preserve the past, she complains about classism instead of racism, [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking she wears shoes]], etc. Part of this is due to internalized racism, and partially it's to spite the elves who refused to accept her merely because she was adopted by a human by going all-in in things they refuse to accept.
* TheChainOfHarm: After the discoveries made by the Inquisition regarding Elvhen history and legend, Sera [[spoiler:bursts into laughter and gleefully announces that she was right.]] If called on this by the Inquisitor, she states that all her life she's been looked down upon as a "Flat-Ear" by elves and constantly had it shoved in her face about how much was "lost" or "taken" from them by humans. [[spoiler:Thus, she gloats about being right all along, because this is her payback.]] This also spills over into her treatment of an "Elfy" Dalish girlfriend, whom Sera treats with scorn [[spoiler:and can potentially dump]] if they act "too elfy," even if Lavellan is endlessly accepting and supportive of her non-elfy status. Eventually, in ''Trespasser'', she manages to let go of this mindset to a certain extent, mentioning that she's "tired" of fighting.
* CharacterDevelopment: In ''Trespasser'', Sera grows out of her tendencies in the base game. Provided the Inquisitor and she [[RelationShipValues didn't end on bad terms]], ''Trespasser'' reveals she matured somewhat: she's willing to work with some nobles (particularly [[spoiler:the Divine]]) provided they're not abusive to common folk, shows emotional support to an Inquisitor going through a hard time (particularly Lavellan's feelings regarding [[spoiler:Solas, the revelation that the Creators weren't gods, and even send Red Jennies to search for survivors if Clan Lavellan was destroyed]]). Sera's also more willing to admit to past faults (particularly regarding her and Lavellan's [[spoiler:breakup after Mythal]], and not let her hatred of "elfy" elves consume her life.
-->'''Sera's Journal:''' ''Elfy gods aren't even [[spoiler:demons]]. Weird or worse? ... Not as bad for dwarves as was for Dalish. Maybe.''
* CityMouse: Not terribly fond of the great outdoors and not afraid to tell it.
-->'''Sera''': You know what's not cold? The city!
* ClingyJealousGirl: On a platonic level, she displays an odd variant of this toward ''Varric,'' of all people. An ongoing thread in their party banter shows that she really hates it when he talks about his friends back in Kirkwall, since she somehow has it in her head that his missing them means that he doesn't consider the Inquisition members to be his friends. He's a bit baffled, and tries to make "Buttercup" understand that this isn't the case, but the explanation doesn't seem to entirely convince her.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Not quite as bad as Merrill, but she definitely doesn't have a filter; what's in her brain is quickly in the air. She also doesn't seem to grasp that other people don't always understand her own personal vocabulary.
* ClusterFBomb: She launches into every curse word she can think of [[spoiler:when she finds herself in the Fade]]. Bull concurs.
-->'''Sera:''' Shitballs! Fuck! Shit! Crap! Fade! Shit! Arse! Demons! Crap!
* CowardlyLion: She's very inclined to express her fears out loud, especially regarding demonic forces, but she'll fight all the same.
* CrisisOfFaith:
** Sera is vaguely Andrastian, but experiences something like this after [[spoiler: Corypheus shows up.]] The prospect of [[spoiler: the Golden City, and thus the Maker himself, actually being ''real'']] is so weighty she doesn't know what to do with it.
--->'''Sera''': It can't be ''true''-true. Even fanatics don't wanna be ''this'' right!
** Experiences this to a lesser extent after [[spoiler:The Temple of Mythal]]. Since Sera believes the Maker and Andraste are real, she concludes the elven gods ''must'' be fake, and thus everything they saw at [[spoiler:the Temple]] must just be demons. Though if the Inquisitor questions this, or says that what they saw suggests there might be some proof of the old elvhen legends, Sera gets ''very'' upset and [[IRejectYourReality doubles down]], as she feels her beliefs are being challenged/threatened. [[spoiler:There's no way to resolve it satisfactorily without just agreeing with her.]]
--->'''Sera:''' There can't be a bunch of gods ''and'' the Maker. Don't matter how much or how little you believe, those don't fit... ''[suddenly hesitant and vulnerable]'' I mean, it just makes sense, right?
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Her demeanor and attitude are in no way reflective of how dangerous she can be.
* CulturalCringe: Sera greatly dislikes "elven life" and vastly prefers Andrastian human "commoner" culture, and isn't afraid to say it.
* CulturalRebel: Sera ''prides'' herself on not being like other elves, and often boasts of how she's "just people". Most of this is a reaction to other elves pulling the NoTrueScotsman on her because she was raised by a human.
* CultureJustifiesAnything: Played with as Sera despises this attitude when nobles use it to justify mistreating the common folk, but Sera uses this herself against any group the common folk deem unworthy; particularly mages and "elfy" elves. If questioned about it, Sera often defends her beliefs that mages should be locked in towers or elves are just PlayingTheVictimCard by claiming it's how the common folk feel about it, as if that should be the end of the matter.
* CutenessProximity: Sera often loses her train of thought to gush over how "adorable," "dwarfy," and "squishy cute" Inquisitor Cadash is. Cadash can either be charmed or offended not to be taken seriously like an adult, though Sera doesn't mean anything by it. [[spoiler:If Sera enters a relationship with Dagna, various notes and end credits posters imply that she also often gushes over her "Widdle".]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: She's highly evasive about her childhood, and, given that she grew up in [[VideoGame/DragonAgeOrigins Denerim during the Fifth Blight]], it's a little understandable that she would have memories she would prefer not to think about. She will open up a little as her approval rises, but she admits that she "doesn't remember much" about the Blight itself except for a few vague details. Most of what she does reveal in detail about her past is about her time as the adopted child of one Lady Emmald (and the emotional baggage that came from that time, as well).
* {{Delinquents}}: A young woman described as a "troublemaker" who spends her time on the streets, while working for a vaguely defined outlay organization.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: One of her personal quests involves asking you to have Inquisition forces march through Verchiel to intimidate feuding nobles into standing down, then cheerfully suggests you go meet her contact to get paid. However, it literally doesn't occur to her that one or both of nobles might [[ShootTheMessenger try to get back at whoever squealed]], and she's ''surprised'' when one of the nobles turns up to kill her "friends" for ratting them out to the Inquisition.
* DifferingPrioritiesBreakup: An Inquisitor who romances Sera can decide at any point that Sera is too flighty and immature to have a serious relationship with, and/or decide that they cannot abide her TerroristsWithoutACause stance on dealing with abusive nobles. After [[spoiler:the Temple of Mythal]], Sera and Lavellan can [[spoiler:realize their stance on the elven religion and culture is too incompatible]], and breakup as well.
* DistractedByTheSexy: If the Inquisitor is a female Vashoth, Sera's train of thought visibly derails and plunges into a ravine upon meeting her.
** She expresses her appreciation of Qunari women in the ''Trespasser'' DLC, to which a teammate will remind her not to get distracted since they're the ''enemy'', but she says it's just a perk of fighting them and (if romanced) says she's got better at home anyway.
* DoesNotLikeMagic: She's not crazy about anything magic-related, and is downright terrified if she's in your party [[spoiler: during the Fade quest. The Nightmare doesn't even bother with a TheReasonYouSuckSpeech since simply talking to her is enough to freak her out.]] No matter which specialization a mage Inquisitor chooses, talking to Sera about it can result in a loss of approval.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: Sera hates raisins. She isn't too fond of cookies either, though she has a FreudianExcuse for that.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything:
** Sera's treatment of a Lavellan who refuses to disparage elven culture is eerily familiar to those who've been in emotionally abusive relationships, particularly with someone who has InternalizedCategorism. Sera hates herself for being an elf, expects Lavellan to feel the same, and thus feels justified not only constantly badmouthing Lavellan's culture to and in front of her, but feels justified verbally lashing out if Lavellan protests. Sera's [[spoiler:ultimatum after Mythal]] is also a textbook example of emotional abuse: [[spoiler:making their partner choose between their beliefs or the relationship.]]
** Lavellan aside, Sera can physically lash out at an Inquisitor of any relationship or background on at least two separate occasions, and each time Sera quickly brushes it off and expects the Inquisitor to do the same.
* DontYouDarePityMe: After [[spoiler: the Fade mission]], she makes it clear to Cassandra that she does ''not'' want to talk about it.
-->'''Sera''': Your face. That sobby, pity face. ''(uncomfortably)'' Why are you aiming it at me?
* DoubleStandard:
** Lady Trevelyan can express hesitation over dating Sera due to the latter not liking nobles, but Sera assures her that "''Lady'' Trevelyan" is fine as long as she doesn't start acting like a jerk like other nobles. However, Sera hesitates to date Lavellan over being elven, and constantly makes Lavellan work to prove she's "not too elfy." Despite nobles and elves both falling under Sera's FantasticRacism, Sera gives Trevelyan the benefit of the doubt but not Lavellan.
** After [[spoiler:The Temple of Mythal]], Sera can eventually AgreeToDisagree with a Non-Elven Inquisitor (though after a lot of yelling and name-calling), but will force a romanced Elven Inquisitor to either fully agree with her [[spoiler:or she will dump them as a lover. Making the choice as her friend is not as drastic, but any option that isn't unambiguously agreeing with her will net some amount of disapproval.]]
* DramaticallyMissingThePoint: In her backstory, [[spoiler:Sera asked her foster mother why they didn't bake cookies together since other mums seemed to do that with their daughters. It wasn't really about cookies; Sera just wanted to bond with her foster mother. However, the "Lady Emmald" seemed to think Sera wanted the cookies but was too proud to admit she couldn't bake, so she bought them and tried to keep Sera from finding out by saying the baker didn't like elves. Not only did her {{pride}} prevent her from bonding with her girl, but the lie deeply hurt Sera in the long run and sowed the seeds of her InternalizedCategorism.]]
* ExactWords: Sera often disparages "elfy" elves. While most of her ire is directed at the Dalish, occasionally Sera speaks snidely about alienage culture and characters too, [[spoiler:particularly Briala]]. When Sera says she hates "elfy" elves, it's not euphemism for Dalish. She means ''all'' "elfy" elves, from city, to Dalish, to Solas.
-->'''Sera:''' I was caught stealing when I was little. You get the alienage for that, or worse.\
\
'''Sera:''' ''(snidely)'' Wonder how long before she forgets her "poor elves." ''[[[spoiler:"She" being Briala, and the "poor elves" being Orlesian city elves.]]]''
** Sera often insists that she's "just people," she doesn't care about elfy stuff or elven life--just people. However, Sera only ever refers to Inquisitor Trevelyan as a "just a person," while she constantly treats Adaar, Cadash, and Lavellan as representatives of their own race. When Sera says she's "people," she means basically human.
* ElementalPowers: Her specialization, Tempest, is a sort of alchemy which involves using assorted elixirs to increase her damage output. Chiefly, she either [[IncendiaryExponent sets herself on fire]], [[AnIcePerson freezes her own skin]], or [[ShockAndAwe moves with lightning speed.]]
* EveryoneHasStandards: If the Inquisitor helps her play pranks on the advisors, Sera tells them to leave Leliana's locked box alone; they're just trying to have fun, not maliciously dig up anyone's deepest secrets.
* FalseDichotomy: Following [[spoiler:the Temple of Mythal]], Sera becomes firmly convinced the ancient elves were just demon-worshipers, since earlier in the game she wrapped her head around the Maker and Golden City being "real." She figures that since the Maker has been "proven" "real," that means the elven gods ''must'' be fake. (An Inquisitor who tries to point out a [[TakeAThirdOption third]] [[AllMythsAreTrue option]] loses approval, and a romanced Inquisitor who refuses to agree [[spoiler:gets dumped for it.]])
* FanOfUnderdog: Said to draw her strength from the common, rather than the already powerful.
* FantasticRacism:
** Toward mages, reflecting what's generally considered a common attitude in Southern Thedas. She can stomach working for a mage Inquisitor, and she likes Dorian a lot, but she disapproves if you ally with the mages or learn any kind of mage specialization. However, she doesn't like the Templars either and greatly disapproves if you ally with them, since they sometimes attack innocent people because they ''might'' be mages.
** Also toward elves, especially the Dalish. She doesn't like it when they act too ''elfy'', nor does she care for their us-against-them mentality and inability to let go of the past. [[spoiler: If you romance her as a female Dalish elf, she gives your character an ultimatum - either agree with her belief that the Dalish gods were demons, or she'll break up.]] Sera also makes some nasty comments about how "[[BabyFactory the elf always takes the elf so that banging bits will]] ''[[BabyFactory mean]]'' [[BabyFactory something]]" if the Inquisitor is dating Solas.
** When accepting the title of Inquisitor, Sera will approve if Inquisitor Adaar or Cadash publicly declares they'll use it to help Qunari or Dwarves everywhere, but will disapprove if an Elven and/or Mage Inquisitor says they'll use it to help Mages or Elves everywhere, simply because the latter falls under her FantasticRacism.
* FatalFlaw: Immaturity. Sera is a compassionate person who wants to help the disadvantaged, but tends to fall easily into black-and-white thinking and clique-ism, along with often acting without regard for consequences. Her immaturity can lead to her relationship with the Inquisitor (especially Lavellan) falling apart when Sera refuses to accept her girlfriend's elf/mage sympathies.
* {{Foil}}:
** To Solas, the other elven party member who [[MySpeciesDothProtestTooMuch is very critical of and tries to distance himself from]] [[BoomerangBigot other elves]], [[ScrewyouElves especially the Dalish]], yet can romance a female Lavellan. However, while Solas at high approval is very polite reverent, Sera is very blunt and carefree. At low approval, Solas tends towards more PassiveAggressiveCombat, while Sera is much more overtly rude. And while Solas loves ''[[BornInTheWrongCentury ancient]]'' elven history and lore, Sera thinks it's ''all'' a waste of time, preferring to live for today over dwelling on yesterday. Both care deeply for the downtrodden and hold antipathy for abusive authority, however. By ''Trespasser'', [[spoiler:Solas intends to help modern elves by leading his own elven spy network to restore ancient Elvhenan at any cost, including potentially the ''rest'' of the races, while Sera decides to help general "common folk" by using the Red Jennies to serve the (Andrastian human) Divine.]]
** To Vivienne, the other female OptionalPartyMember who approaches the Inquisitor during their first visit to Val Royeaux. While Sera is a LowerClassLout and SatisfiedStreetRat, Vivienne is a WickedCultured LadyOfWar who likes KickingAssInAllHerFinery. Both believe Circles should remain to protect the common folk, though they also have personal reasons: Sera because she's [[DoesNotLikeMagic very uncomfortable with magic]], Vivienne because the Circles are what give her power. They're also most outspoken for restoring the world the way it was for personal benefit: Vivienne because playing the Circle hierarchy and Orlais' DecadentCourt gives her political power. While Sera despises selfish nobles, she nevertheless wants to restore society's nice, familiar little categories because it allows her to be a WildCard and KarmicThief. [[spoiler:At least before Sera's CharacterDevelopment in Trespasser]].
* FreudianExcuse: Zig-Zagged regarding her [[BoomerangBigot boomerang bigotry]] against other elves. She explains early that she was orphaned young and raised among humans. If the Inquisitor gains enough approval, Sera opens up further about her past: [[spoiler:she had a proud human noble foster mother who made her think she was subject to FantasticRacism just so Sera wouldn't find out she didn't bake her own cookies, which contributed to her InternalizedCategorism and certainly contributed to her hatred of people who value their own pride too much, i.e. nobles]]. However, if the Inquisitor tries to talk to her about it afterwards, they only lose approval since Sera denies there's any reason she's not like other elves. Sera claims she just ''naturally'' doesn't like or fit in with elven culture. Sera also hints that she distanced herself from elven culture even ''before'' [[spoiler:her human noble foster mother took her in]]. She mentions she got caught stealing in the human market when she was little, and describes not wanting to be sent to the alienage back then as if it were like getting sent to jail "or worse."
* FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse: Sera can come to admit this in ''Trespasser'', though she needs to be on good terms with the player to do so. She more or less admits she let her hatred of "elfy" elves prevent her from being there for people she cares about. If she and Lavellan [[spoiler:broke up over Mythal]], she can even admit her part in the fight, and muses over what went wrong and why their relationship was "broken."
* FullCircleRevolution: When Solas asks her why the Friends of Red Jenny don't try to do more with their power and influence, this is her answer. She believes that trying to enact social change by lopping off the top is pointless since it just leaves a new top to frig it all up. Solas concedes the point.
* TheGadfly: Sera gets a kick out of messing with people, whether by playing pranks (on the advisors, putting a snake in Vivienne's tent, or putting lizards in Solas' bedroll) or saying whatever offensive shit comes to her head just to get a rise out of them (like Varric or Solas). If the other character fails to get annoyed by her antics, Sera actually gets huffy that they ruined her fun. See InsultBackfire below.
* {{Gayngster}}: To the extent that the Friends of Red Jenny can be seen as organized crime.
* GayOption: For the female Inquisitor.
* TheGlomp: After Sera's Romantic Approval becomes high enough, she has a nightmare where the Inquisitor left forever. If the Inquisitor talks her down ([[VideoGameCrueltyPotential rather than dump her on the spot]]), Sera will tackle-hug the Inquisitor... and it's strongly implied they had sex afterwards.
* GoodVictimsBadVictims: If you're one of the general nondescript common folk, you deserve to be protected and avenged. If you're a mage or "elfy" elf, then you deserve what happened to you because [[CultureJustifiesAnything the common folk don't like those groups or vice-versa]].
* GutFeeling: Sera usually goes off these. Best exemplified in her introduction, where she justifies murdering a noble she never met because she could tell he was a "bad person," and she ''knows'' people.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: While not nearly as moral as fellow blonde Cole, at the end of the day, she just wants to improve the lives of innocent people.
* HairTriggerTemper: Due to having [[BrutalHonesty no filter]], Sera never hides when she's angry or annoyed. However, given how many topics fall under her ire ([[AristocratsAreEvil nobility]], [[DoesNotLikeMagic magic]], [[ScrewYouElves elfy stuff]], [[PrideBeforeAFall pride]], [[FanOfTheUnderdog perceived abuses of the common folk]], [[NeverMyFault Sera being called out for anything]]), it's very easy for the Inquisitor to stumble on one of Sera's triggers and suddenly find her yelling, throwing accusations, or calling them names. Unless the Inquisitor is often lock-in-step with Sera's opinions, they can often find themselves trying to verbally backpedal or claim they were wrong in order to placate her anger.
* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: As implied by the concept art and the food she's compared to being tequila and Skittles. Her home base at Skyhold (and previously at Haven, if recruited before the move) is also the bar.
* HardTruthAesop: Sera's [[InternalizedCategorism internalized racism]] and hostility to anything "elfy," partly due to their [[NoTrueScotsman "not elfy enough"]] attitude against her, demonstrates that oppressed minorities don't always get along, nor always agree that they're even oppressed. Also, it takes more than just one conversation to overcome a lifetime of [[InternalizedCategorism internalized racism]].
* HasAType: She seems to likes big, tall women, especially the Qunari, and expresses distaste for skinny ones like the elves. It does not prevent her from romancing either race, though.
* HatesTheirParent: Sera absolutely ''despises'' hers. She becomes intensely angry just talking about it, and uses words like "bitch" and "monster" to describe them. [[spoiler:Sera still hates her human noble foster mother for putting her {{Pride}} before Sera's feelings, and kickstarting her InternalizedCategorism]].
* TheHedonist: Sera has low impulse control, and tends to indulge in her desires. It's strongly implied she often [[HardDrinkingPartyGirl drinks, parties]], eats mostly snacks (like jam, or ice cream and beer), makes messes, plays pranks, [[BloodKnight seeks fights]] and skips town whenever the whim takes her. She's also implied to ignore basic hygene like brushing her hair (instead [[CuttingTheKnot just cutting it with a blunt knife]] when it gets too long) or washing her clothes (Josephine remarks that Sera doesn't seem to have any clothes without mustard stains on them). She also tends to jump straight into bed with someone she likes and worries about the "Are we compatible?" thing later. In general, the concept of forgoing instant gratification for long-term fulfillment is too ''boring'' to Sera.
* HiddenDepths:
** If her friendship is high enough, you hear her backstory: [[spoiler: Turns out she was raised by an old, proud noblewoman. The woman bought cookies from the local bakery and passed them off as her own, lying to Sera about how the baker was a bigot to keep her from finding out she couldn't cook. After revealing this, Sera reaches out to her friend/lover to make some cookies with her, because she's never had anyone, parents or otherwise, with whom she could do anything simple like that.]]
---> '''Sera''': Right, what do you mean, because I am really not used to that... acceptance thing you're doing right there.
** [[spoiler: Surprisingly, she ''does'' know some elven lore, as she's able to correctly guess the name of an elven god in the ''Jaws of Hakkon'' DLC, before calling the Inquisitor an ass for doubting her.]]
** You wouldn't guess by how athletic and hot-blooded she is, but she loves knitting. It's ''[[MundaneMadeAwesome stabby-sewing]]''.
** Though her actual belief in the Maker and Andraste is a bit less clear, Sera believes in the ''ideals'' of Andrastianism. During a conversation between her and Bull about the Qun and the Chantry, Bull tells Sera that the two aren't so different, because they both have rules so you know who's in and who's out. An upset Sera tells Bull that's only useful if you want to keep people out, and that's not what the worship of Andraste should be.
** She's remarkably observant for someone who typically [[AttentionDeficitOohShiny can't stay on the same topic for more than five minutes]]. If taken to Halamshiral during "Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts", she wastes no time listing out the various flaws and secrets of the various nobility around her, and takes pleasure in reading the room and watching the nobility react to the Inquisitor's prescence.
* HonorBeforeReason: Donwplayed. Varric can suggest Sera organize the Red Jennies to do more than be TerroristsWithoutACause, but Sera dismisses this as "thinking like a noble." She'd rather forgo all the good they could do as an organized force than betray their roots as unorganized peasants fighting back. Part of this is explained during a party banter with Solas, in which she doesn't see the point in organized, all out rebellion against the authorities [[spoiler:(As in, ''exactly what Solas himself did'' against the Evanuris)]] due to the fact that even if the Red Jennies ''did'' overthrow the people in charge, someone else, possibly bigger and badder than the last leaders, would just rise to take their place.
** She grows out of this slightly in ''Trespasser,'' as she's more willing to do more organized and long-term missions, and even end up working for [[spoiler:the New Divine]].
* HonorRelatedAbuse: Sera claims she was put through this as a child. [[spoiler:Her human noble foster mother was too proud to admit she didn't know how to bake, so she bought cookies from the local baker, passed them off as her own, and tried to keep Sera from finding out by lying that the baker didn't like her for being an elf, which kickstarted Sera's [[InternalizedCategorism internalized racism]].]] Sera claims she emotionally abused her in order to protect appearances. The Inquisitor can agree, or argue that it was a case of ParentsAsPeople.
-->'''Sera:''' I mean, "if you don't give a child [[spoiler:a cookie]] because of appearances, you're a monster!"
* HotBlooded: She lives in the moment.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: If romanced by a female Qunari character. The only possible relationship with a greater disparity in size between the two characters is an elven, human, or dwarven Inquisitor in a romance with Iron Bull.
** There's also quite the size disparity between herself and Dagna, should they get together.
* {{Hypocrite}}:
** Like Solas, Sera doesn't want to be seen as just another elf, nor does she like it when people assume she's "elfy." However, she frequently dismisses most elves she comes across as just that. (Including a Dalish Herald when they first meet).
--->'''Iron Bull''': What'd you think of that redhead in the village we just passed?\
'''Sera''': Too elfy.\
'''Iron Bull''': Suit yourself.
** If the Inquisitor spares the abusive noble in her personal quest, Sera will call them out on it. The Inquisitor can counter that Sera fills her pockets with the money of the very nobles she is quick to condemn, while not helping anybody herself. Sera sputters for a few moments, [[IgnoredEpiphany then changes the subject]].
** Sera approves of "sticking mages in towers" to protect the common folk, and elves in slums or forests if they're "too elfy," but will not tolerate restricting the freedom of the general common folk for ''any'' cause, nation, or people. It ties back to Elves and Mages falling under her FantasticRacism.
** Sera expects the Inquisitor to be NiceToTheWaiter, yet Sera herself often pranks and robs the Skyhold kitchens (causing grief for the kitchen staff), can get Vivienne's butler fired in party banter, and is shown in ''Tresspasser'' to make a mess in the Orlesian spa (potentially twice) for the spa staff to clean up.
** Sera expects "elfy" elves to accept non-elfy elves like her, yet Sera herself refuses to tolerate any elfiness [[spoiler:To the point that she'll dump Lavellan as a friend or lover for refusing to agree with her that the elven religion is just demon worship.]]
** Dorian points out in party banter that for how much Sera [[DoesNotLikeMagic dislikes magic]], she's not shy from using its benefits. In fact, Sera is an Tempest who uses "magic in a bottle" to enhance her arrows. Sera denies this, claiming it doesn't come from her hands so it's fine.
* IRejectYourReality: Sera often sees the world the way she ''wants'' to see it, even if shown direct evidence to the contrary.
* IfItsYouItsOkay: Potentially with an Elven Inquisitor, depending on how the character is played. Despite her animosity toward elves, Sera will make a tentative exception for an Elven Inquisitor, though only because she doesn't find Lavellan "too elfy." It is up to the player as to whether she is correct or not in her assessment. [[spoiler:If a Dalish Inquisitor refuses to agree with Sera that the entire elven religion is just demon worship after Mythal, Sera breaks up with them.]]
* IgnorantOfTheirOwnIgnorance: Sera is ''very'' proud of being "not elfy," and refuses to hear anything about elven history or culture. She also holds that culturally assimilating to humans is the ''only'' way for an elf to have a fun life (dismissing elven life as "backwards and boring"), and she dismisses any elf who actually likes their culture or wants to learn more about their history are just bigots and "sore losers of history."
* IgnoredEpiphany: In Sera's own words: "I hate learning lessons. Makes my stomach hurt."
** In her personal quest, she talks about how she once tormented a baker because she heard he didn't like her for being an elf ("Why not? It ''seemed'' he deserved it!"), yet her current job as a Red Jenny involves tormenting and occasionally killing nobles she's only heard were bad through the [[https://dragonage.fandom.com/wiki/Codex_entry:_The_Friends_of_Red_Jenny Red Jenny grapevine]].
** If a Non-Elven Inquisitor cites Sera's lack of support as a reason to [[spoiler:break up after Mythal]], Sera is shocked and hurt and starts to protest that she didn't mean it that way... before she doubles down and insists that ''they'' are being unreasonable and she doesn't need this!
** In one of her personal quests, the Inquisitor can call her out on not really making things better or helping anyone, but just filling her pockets with money from the very nobles she's quick to condemn. For once she doesn't have an answer, and starts to think about it... only to brush it off two seconds later. By ''Trespasser'', she has become more organized in her leading of the Jennies, with a stronger goal of helping the "little people".
* InadequateInheritor: ''[[AllThereInTheManual WoT: Vol II]]'' reveals that Sera's [[spoiler:human noble foster mother left her her ''entire'' estate and fortune after she died. However, Sera [[HatesTheirParent didn't want it]], and decided to donate it to charity. However, neighboring nobles couldn't stand either an elf inheriting, nor the poor benefiting from it. So they made up a new "tax law" to confiscate the estate.]]
* IncompatibleOrientation:
** It's possible for a male Inquisitor to flirt with Sera during their first conversation back at Haven, but since Sera is attracted to women, Sera will scoff and say "Not even!" before getting back to work. If he has strong friendship and persists in the flirting, she'll be a little more apologetic in her second rejection, saying that they have too much in common - like the fact that they both like women.
** On the other hand, Sera is attracted to Cassandra, who is straight.
* InternalizedCategorism: Sera applies many negative human stereotypes about elves to many elves she meets, while at the same time aggressively asserting her "not-elfy" status. [[spoiler: It links back to her FreudianExcuse, as well as a vague implication that at some point she tried to join an alienage and/or Dalish Clan, only for "elfy" elves to make her feel "broken".]] By ''Trespasser'', she is slowly growing out of this attitude.
* InsultBackfire:
** No matter how hard she tries to taunt Vivienne, she just can't succeed against someone with that much experience in a DecadentCourt.
** She also tries this with Varric, stating that "Dwarves are weird." But Varric completely agrees with this opinion, much to her annoyance.
** If a Lavellan who's romancing Solas [[ActuallyPrettyFunny laughs]] or doesn't take the bait after Sera makes her [[BabyFactory "drop 'em and rebuild the empire"]] insult, Sera gets very huffy and annoyed, grumbling, "Hmph! You're no fun."
* InsultFriendlyFire: Sera often mocks elves to Solas, occasionally dwarves to Varric, and magic to any mage in party banter, even if the Inquisitor is an Elf, Mage, or Dwarf and on good terms with her. After [[spoiler:The Temple of Mythal]], Inquisitor Lavellan can actually call her out on it, though it only results in [[spoiler:an ultimatum and/or approval loss.]]
* InsultOfEndearment: If pursuing a romance, Sera can call the Inquisitor "all touched" or "a loony" a few times, though it's said with obvious affection.
* ItIsDehumanizing: Sera refers to Cole as an "it" or "Creepy" and refuses to talk to him. She eventually slips up and uses "him," to his delight. She does it again in her thoughts while he peers in.
--> '''Cole''': ''[quoting Sera's line of thought]'' Shite. He's wrong. Dead-eyed crazy, shite. I called him a 'him'. Is he alive, is everything alive, shite. [[AttentionDeficitOohShiny I hate raisins]].
* ItsQuietTooQuiet: In the ''Trespasser'' DLC, if you talk to her she'll mention that none of the servants at the palace have anything they want the Jennies to do, which she finds ''very'' suspicious. [[spoiler: Turns out most of them are spies, either for the Qunari or Fen'Harel.]]
* ItsTheBestWhateverEver: As mentioned under BloodKnight above, Sera always enjoys fighting big things. In ''Jaws of Hakkon,'' the party gets dispatched to track down and kill a mysterious beast that turns out to be merely a particularly large and aggressive bogfisher (essentially a fantasy hippo that's usually completely docile). Everyone else is incredulous because they expected some giant predator. Sera, on the other hand...
--> '''Sera''': ''(with relish)'' Best. Bogfisher. ''Ever''.
** During her romantic sidequest, the Inquisitor can decide they want to give Sera a gift and asks all the other companions for suggestions. When they come up negative, Sera instead reveals that she's ''thrilled'' the Inquisitor told everyone they were dating, and concludes with:
-->'''Sera:''' Best. Present. ''Ever''.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Despite being somewhat rude and outright mean-spirited a lot of times, she does have her redeeming qualities, such as her concern for the common folk. [[spoiler:Blackwall mentions that Sera is the only person, other than possibly the Inquisitor, to remain unambiguously supportive of him after learning the truth about his past. Of course, it helps that he was caught killing a ''noble'' family, not commoners.]]
** Despite Dagna's love of magic, it's obvious that they become either very close friends or lovers, and that Sera cares greatly for her either way. (Though Sera also makes it clear in party banter with Dorian that she's fine using magic as long as it doesn't come from a mage's hands.)
* JudgeJuryAndExecutioner: If she sees a nobleman mistreating a commoner, she judges him an enemy and kills him. The Inquisitor can call her out on this.
* KarmicThief: Sera sees herself as JustLikeRobinHood, but she's really this since she keeps ''all'' the money she steals and justifies it by saying they were rich arseholes who deserve it. The Inquisitor can call her out.
-->'''Inquisitor''': [[WhatTheHellHero How are you making things better? What have you done for anyone?]]\
'''Sera''': I make sure these arseholes pay.\
'''Inquisitor''': [[ShutUpHannibal While filling your pockets.]]\
'''Sera''': Well, maybe, but... but... ''[voice wavers; long pause]'' [[AesopAmnesia Know what? You go suck freaking eggs. I take]] ''[[AesopAmnesia back.]]''
* KillSteal: She apparently does this quite often, if the PartyBanter is anything to go by.
-->'''Iron Bull''': [[PunctuatedForEmphasis Please. Stop. Stealing. My. Kills. Sera!]]
* LackOfEmpathy: Exactly how much is debated by fans. For some, it's only insofar as a regular lack of empathy from many disenfranchised teenagers and young adults, and for some it's a lack of empathy bordering [=NPD=].
* TheLadette: Judging by how she scandalizes Cassandra while getting wild laughs from the guys, she's a raunchy girl. Exemplified by her second [[http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/File:Sera_alt_tarot.jpg.png tarot card]] in the follower selection screen. And her romance card.
* LeeroyJenkins: Has no patience for fuss or deliberation, as indicated by her "bad decision hair" which she cut with a blunt knife when it got in her eyes.
* LikeGoesWithLike: Defied. Unlike Solas, who finds it natural to desire a fellow elf, Sera is most hesitant to romance an Elven Inquisitor exactly ''because'' most people expect elves to date other elves.
-->'''Lavellan:''' I don't understand. You're really that hesitant because I'm an elf?\
'''Sera:''' Well, you're you, so you're nice. It's just... I know how it goes, yeah? We're elves, together we're two elves, then we need to be elfy because we're elves for other elves and elf, elf, elf!
* LongDistanceRelationship: What her relationship with Dagna becomes, as Sera [[spoiler: often leaves the Inquisition to dedicate herself more to the Red Jennies.]] The epilogue still notes that she goes about her business "With frequent visits to her Widdle, of course."
* LoveCannotOvercome: Not if you're [[spoiler:"too elfy" or believe in elven gods]], it can't.
* LowerClassLout: She's basically a checklist for the stereotype: loud, crass, vulgar, uneducated, violent, and a criminal delinquent.
* MaliciousMisnaming: Sera refuses to correctly pronounce [[spoiler:Corypheus]] because of how monstrous he is.
** She often refuses to address Solas by name, more often than not calling him "elfy" and "droopy (ears)" to let him know just how much she despises him for his "elfiness."
** Sera also refuses to call Cole by name, instead calling him "it" and "Creepy."
* TheMcCoy: Emotional and expressing concern for civilians.
* MeaningfulName: Names that sound like "Sera" (Sara, Sarah, Cera, etc) are ''extremely'' common in English-speaking countries. Sera is proud to be part of, and draw strength from, the common.
** In-universe, the sound "sera" is a common base for many elven words, which fits nicely with Sera's common city elf status. However, given her {{fantastic racism}}, she's indifferent to learn this.
--->'''Sera''': ''[belches, then laughs]'' Hey Solas, how do you say "excuse me" in elven or whatever?\
'''Solas''': For you, it would be "ara seranna-ma." It is a coincidence that your name is within; the base form is common.\
'''Sera''': Thanks. Now when I don't say it, you'll know it's on purpose.
* TheMenFirst: She approves of an Inquisitor whose first priority is the people serving under them. For example, when she asks the Inquisitor about [[spoiler:their trip into the Fade in "Here Lies The Abyss"]] and the Inquisitor responds that the only important thing is that people died in the battle, she will approve, stating that the Inquisitor understands what really matters.
* MightMakesRight: Along with WrittenByTheWinners. Sera chooses to believe in the Maker and Andraste, and dismiss the elven beliefs and legends, partly because humans won in past wars against the elves and are now the dominant race and religion across the land.
-->'''Sera:''' So call me stupid, but I believe in stuff ''not'' made up by dead people who failed.
* MirrorCharacter:
** Despite her vitriol against Vivienne, they have a surprising amount in common. They were both once poor and starving children who moved to and grew up in Orlais, where they thrived: Vivienne through the Circles and Court, and Sera through the streets and Red Jennies. They're the companions most out-spoken about restoring the status quo as much as possible; especially the Circles and the old socioeconomic system to benefit themselves (Vivienne to thrive in Orlais' DecadentCourt, Sera to fill her pockets as a KarmicThief).
** Solas points out in party banter that they are not so different quite often, much to Sera's disgust.
** If the Inquisitor is in a relationship with Sera and helps Briala at the Winter Palace [[spoiler:reunite with Celene or blackmail Gaspard]], one of the reasons Sera is so harsh toward Briala is she sees some of herself in her: a lesbian city elven archer with a vast spy network who bedded someone powerful (Briala with Celene, Sera with the Inquisitor), but she sees Briala as letting that power go to her head and end up hurting the little people (or "poor elves") she claimed to care about. Sera even claims she's going to be careful about not becoming "stupid" like Briala about her own relationship.
--->'''Sera:''' Because the real lesson of this is never sleep with someone powerful and then end up like Briala. It's real easy to get from power to stupid. You have the first part covered. I'm watching out for the second. So, you know, try not to be an idiot. ''(kissy noises)''
* MiseryPoker: Though who's doing this is left up to player interpretation.
** When Sera first joins the Inquisition, she claims mages are doing this to shut down the complaints of common people they endanger with their magic or when they go "all demon-y," as well as ordinary people caught in the crossfire of the Mage/Templar War. The Herald can either agree or point out that Sera is using the plight of the common folk to dismiss the plight of mages, though the latter just results in an approval loss.
** Sera claims most elves do this regarding the suffering most non-elfy common folk by PlayingTheVictimCard, though Sera herself often uses the plight of the general common folk (especially humans and surface dwarves) to dismiss and downplay the FantasticRacism and UrbanSegregation that most elves endure.
* MisplacedRetribution: Sera's InternalizedCategorism is at least half due to humans' FantasticRacism against elves [[spoiler:since her human noble foster mother told her the baker didn't like elves]], half due to other elves pulling a NoTrueScotsman fallacy toward her. However, Sera only ever blames or takes it out on other elves, particularly the Dalish.
* {{Mooning}}: One of her very favourite things in the whole wide world. Stealing people's breeches, forcing them to attack pantsless? Defacing Inquisitorial records with drawings of buttocks? Mooning Vivienne whenever the whim strikes her (which is apparently often) even though Vivienne isn't in the least scandalised or shocked? It's all good for Sera. Butts!
* MotorMouth: Although less because she talks quickly and more because people who speak with her are too busy trying to [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} understand what she just said]] to actually respond to her. So she talks some more.
* MouthyKid: Always speaks her mind, and usually does so with the interests of the downtrodden in mind. While she's an adult, she is the youngest member of the Inquisition's Inner Circle (with most other members being in their thirties or forties in some cases).
* {{Naytheist}}: She'd like nothing more than to be an atheist, but this is a Universe where there are extremely powerful beings who might as well be actual gods. It freaks her out.
* NeighborhoodFriendlyGangsters: While Sera may be a thief, she's a far cry from outright evil. She is a member of the Friends of Red Jenny gang, which works to protect -- or at least avenge -- the common folk from the abuses of nobles.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween:
** Takes the role of the In-Between one among your three female party members compared to Cassandra's Nice and Vivienne's Mean. She's not as idealistic, committed, and open-minded as Cassandra or as ruthless and callous as Vivienne. While she is available as a romance option, unlike Vivienne, her romance with a Dalish Elf Inquisitor can potetially be rockier than Cassandra's romance with an Inquisitor from a different race.
** Among the three female romances, Sera takes the role of "Mean" to Josephine's "Nice" and Cassandra's "In-Between." While Josephine is a PrincessClassic, and Cassandra is more straight-laced but secretly romantic (who tries to be respectful of a mage or non-human Inquisitor despite her strong Chantry leanings), Sera often dismisses the Inquisitor's feelings or concerns, criticizes magic to a Mage Inquisitor, "elfy" elves to Lavellan, and blithely dismisses Adaar or Cadash if they express discomfort over her objectifying or infantilizing them. There's also her AngerBornOfWorry moments, and [[spoiler:her ultimatum after Mythal]].
* NiceToTheWaiter: She's a firm believer that people should do this, because waiters (plus servants, maids, seamstresses, scullery workers, cooks, weavers, farm hands, gardeners, labourers and all the other dozens of little people a single 'big' person needs to keep themselves in luxury) are both the grease and the wheels in the operation of the Friends' network. The quickest way to bring their wrath down upon you is making an enemy of the help.
* TheNicknamer: She refers to the Inquisitor as "Inky" (though she can be asked to pick another one), Cole as "Creepy", and Solas as "elfy" or "droopy-ears." Also, because she refuse to give the BigBad the dignity of saying his name right, she has a couple for him: "[[spoiler:Coryphy-spit]]" and "[[spoiler:Coryphy-whatzit]]". If unromanced by an Inquisitor, she begins seeing Dagna and calls her "Widdle" in her journal entries.
** She also calls Vivienne "Vivi," mainly because of [[InsistentTerminology how insistent Vivienne is on being addressed by her title.]]
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: Delivers an absolutely horrific one [[spoiler: to a nobleman who ambushes you in her personal quest, puts down some common people, and tries to talk his way out once he realizes the Inquisitor is involved. She gets so crazy and beats him so bad the Inquisitor actually has to scream at her to get her to stop.]]
* NonAnswer: A Dwarven Inquisitor in a romance with Sera can express discomfort over Sera [[CutenessProximity constantly gushing over her being so little and "squeezy-cute"]]. Sera brushes it off each time, saying she doesn't mean anything by it and she doesn't know many dwarves, but never stops either.
-->'''Cadash:''' You tease a lot because I'm a dwarf. Is that all you see?\
'''Sera:''' Well, don't take it wrong. I don't even know a lot of dwarves. I just... think you're funny. You know, because you're short? I don't mean anything by it.
* NoSympathy: To Mages or Elves, who both fall under Sera's FantasticRacism. To the point that she'll disapprove of allying with mages, or sometimes helping mages or elves in many side missions. She outright says after allying with mages that they can "stick them in towers" if things cause trouble, and justifies bigotry against them because the common folk find them dangerous or "scary," and she often dismisses the systemic abuses mages face by saying if they just "sat on their hands," there wouldn't be an issue.
* NoTrueScotsman:
** She hates elves who shame other elves for not being "elfy" enough.
** She does this to ''herself''. She might be physically an elf, but since she's not an "elfy" elf that follows elven culture she feels she's "just people". As such, she assumes that being "people" means she ''must'' reject ''everything'' specifically elven in nature or she's "not people" enough.
---> '''Sera:''' ''[to Iron Bull]'' Well, we're both elves, so [the sex] is more like clack, clack, clack!
* NothingIsScarier: Sera's greatest fear is "nothingness," and describes the nightmares of the Fade as "''Nothing''. They were... like little empty ''things''. Like, there's nothing in the dark. No point." {{Spiders| Are Scary}} would have been preferable for her.
* NotWhatISignedOnFor: She originally joins the Inquisition to help stop the Mage-Templar and Orlesian Civil wars, as well as the Breach, to get things back to normal and "profitable." When the Elder One and [[spoiler:his archdemon]] show up, she becomes ''very'' nervous, because this is waaaaay beyond her scope.
-->'''Sera''': Oh Andraste, what'd I step in...?
* ObsessivelyNormal: Due to her [[InternalizedCategorism internalized racism]] and [[DoesNotLikeMagic fear of magic]], Sera has a very narrow definition of "normal," and will frequently admonish companions whom she feels don't act "normal" enough. (Particularly Solas, Dorian, and Cole.)
-->'''Solas''': Have you considered snapping the Veil-warp to enhance the relative energy?\
'''Dorian''': Like cracking a whip? Yes, tried it once. Made my teeth taste funny.\
'''Sera''': Two of you doesn't make this normal!
** Sera will also frequently admonish [[spoiler:and can even dump]] a Female Elven Inquisitor who pursues a RomanceSidequest with her, but Sera deems her "too elfy."
-->'''Sera:''' Frig. You're going elfy... This doesn't fit, it ''can't'' fit. ''I'm'' not elfy! So say you're kidding, and we can go back to our weird-enough normal!
* OddFriendship:
** Dorian is both a mage and an aristocrat, yet they become friends given that he is a RebelPrince.
** Her attempts to prank Vivienne might also count.
** She also seems to like Cassandra quite well, although that's partly because she finds Cassandra attractive.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: When you first gain Skyhold, Sera actually speaks seriously about the need to [[spoiler:stop Corypheus.]] The Inquisitor is surprised that she actually doesn't sound crazy for a moment; Sera agrees that something must be off.
* TheOneWhoWearsShoes: Most elves are barefoot this game, except for Sera. Something she's proud of.
-->'''Inquisitor:''' You're not like most of the elves I've met.\
'''Sera:''' Thanks, right? Or was that an insult? Suppose I could go barefoot and whine some more.
* OptionalPartyMember: You can choose not to recruit her. She is also, in fact, the only companion who can be asked to leave after she's been recruited; some of the others will leave of their own accord if their approval drops too low, but Sera can be sent away by the Inquisitor at any time.
* OrphansPlotTrinket: Played for laughs if you ask if she has any memories of her birth family.
-->'''Sera''': Well, there is the amulet I had as an orphan that has a missing piece and ''look at your face!'' You believe me!
* PairTheSpares:
** Reading through the diary outside her room after the final battle, if she hasn't been romanced, reveals that she has discovered the existence of Dagna. She likes the girl well enough to give her a nickname, which is something we otherwise only see her do for a romanced Inquisitor.
--->'''Sera''': Finally someone fun! I'll call her Widdle!\
''[A drawing of Sera standing back to back with Dagna. Their weapons seem improbable. And awesome.]''
** This becomes official in ''Trespasser'', and the epilogue confirms that they see each other frequently post-game.
* PayEvilUntoEvil: She's of the opinion that if a guy doesn't want to get shivved, that guy should probably act nice. She's willing to settle for [[PokeThePoodle lesser punishments]] for lesser evils. Like a pie to the face.
* PercussiveTherapy: After the Winter Palace, she can be found venting her frustrations at everyone by shooting arrows into her own door. She imagines the last one as a GroinAttack at [[spoiler: Corypheus]].
* PieInTheFace: If the Inquisitor joins her in her pranking activities, she ends up getting a pie in her face courtesy of the Inquisitor themselves. Given that she'd just been running around town throwing pies at people it feels like she's getting her just desserts, even if she does pie in the Inquisitor at the same time.
* PlayingTheVictimCard: Sera implies several times and outright states at one point that she sees "elfy" elves as this. She dismisses the plight of most elves as their own fault for not assimilating with humans, and their oppression as something they brought on themselves. [[spoiler:Particularly after Abelas reveals the elves destroyed themselves in a civil war.]]
-->'''Sera:''' Elfy elves have shoved "victim" in my face a million times... Everyone is always, "Oh, poor elves. Victim of this and whatever." But [[spoiler:the empire ate itself]]. Love it. Like being sad makes them better than me. Turns out, they're not victims. They're just like everyone else: arseholes.
* PluckyComicRelief: Said by several writers to be hilarious and the most overtly humorous character, which, given the previous games' banter, is saying something.
* PoorCommunicationKills: In her backstory, [[spoiler:Sera asked her foster mother about making cookies together. Sera wanted to do it as a way of mother-daughter boding, but her foster mother (due to her noble class and materialism) thought Sera wanted the physical cookies, so she bought cookies and passed them off as her own. It was a disaster on all fronts: she tried to keep Sera from finding out by lying that the baker didn't like elves, which set off Sera's InternalizedCategorism, when Sera found out she felt betrayed and hurt, and the old woman died alone with her foster daughter hating her.]]
* ThePrankster:
** Stealing the enemy's trousers is more important to her than stealing their weapons. She even expresses that if a Red Jenny connection was after the Inquisitor, she'd settle for [[PokeThePoodle a pie to the face]] because the Inquisitor isn't nasty enough to outright kill.
** The Inquisitor can also join her in harmlessly pranking Cullen and Josephine. In that case, it's revealed to be her method of boosting morale by giving their underlings something to laugh at, thus making the leaders seem more human.
* ProperlyParanoid: During the Exalted Council summit, she believes that some of the elven servants are acting squirrelly. While it may seem that she's relapsing on her discrimination against other elves, [[spoiler:it turns out that said suspicious elves are agents of Solas and are helping the Inquisition.]]
* RaceFetish:
** Her comment on Iron Bull is that he makes her fantasize about Qunari women, and female Qunari Inquisitors have a much easier time romancing her.
--->'''Sera''': Can you imagine what their women must be like? Woof.
** If she's along in the ''Trespasser'' DLC, she keeps getting distracted EatingTheEyeCandy when the party fights a mixed-gender Qunari force led by a woman.
** She also seemed to have a preference for dwarves as well, since she gains just as much approval if a dwarven Inquisitor decides to romance her, making comments on how adorable she sees her; and if not romanced, will develop a relationship with Dagna.
* RejectionProjection: This is a recurring problem for [[BoomerangBigot Sera]]. While she [[JerkassHasAPoint makes some valid points]] about both Dalish and city elves rejecting elves that are insufficiently "elfy", Sera herself is very quick to write off all other elves as being "elfy" even before they demonstrate such behavior. Sera then acts like she was the one being rejected when other elves understandably react poorly to being judged before doing anything objectionable.
* RightForTheWrongReasons: [[spoiler: After the Temple of Mythal, she accuses the elven religion of being fake. While her reason for believing so is that she decided that the [[AMythologyIsTrue Maker is real]] and thus [[FalseDichotomy the elven gods must be fake]], come ''Trespasser'' it turns out the Evanuris (the Elven pantheon) weren't gods after all, but celebrated generals who came to be revered as kings and then later worshiped as gods. So while her logic was faulty, her conclusion was half-right.]]
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: In the bad future.
-->'''Sera''': The day you died... I ran out of arrows making them pay.
* RomanceSidequest: For female Inquisitors only.
* RuleOfSymbolism: In-universe, Sera uses [[spoiler:cookies]] as a symbol for bonding with someone. She recalls how she suggested [[spoiler:baking cookies together]] as a way to bond with her foster mother, but her mother didn't want to [[spoiler:admit she didn't know how to bake]], so she used it as a way to hurt Sera instead. [[spoiler:She bought cookies, passed them off as her own, and tried to keep Sera from finding out by telling her the baker didn't like her for being an elf.]] As a result, Sera grew to hate [[spoiler:cookies]], and avoid bonding with people in general. If her approval becomes high enough, then Sera [[spoiler:suggests baking cookies together]] to symbolize deepening her friendship/relationship with the Inquisitor. If the Inquisitor [[LiteralMinded fails to get the metaphor]], Sera [[LampshadeHanging spells it out for them]].
-->'''Inquisitor:''' I don't understand. This [[spoiler:Lady Emald]] was just [[ParentsAsPeople trying to be good to you]].\
'''Sera:''' She hurt people.\
'''Inquisitor:''' It was just [[spoiler:cookies]].\
'''Sera:''' [[SuddenlyShouting It was not just]] [[spoiler:cookies]]! Lie to herself? Fair play, only hurts her. But she made me think [[InternalizedCategorism there was something wrong with me]]! And the [[spoiler:baker]]? I made his life shit! Why not? It ''seemed'' like he deserved it! I mean, "if you don't give a child [[spoiler:a cookie]] because of appearances, you're a monster!"
* RunningGag: She'll comment on the state of the Veil at various places (in response to Solas mentioning it if he's present), such at it being bored in the Hissing Wastes and it smelling like arse in the Fallow Mire. At the Frostback Basin, some of the other party members join in on it, even [[NotSoAboveItAll Cassandra]], much to Solas's chagrin if he's there as well.
* SadClown: Downplayed. While Sera ''is'' a devil-may-care free spirit who just wants to have fun and play pranks all the time, and is the most overtly humorous character in the game, some high approval conversations with the Inquisitor can reveal that deep down Sera feels insecure and alone due to having to fend for herself her whole life, being made to feel "not good enough" by other elves and human nobles alike, and she secretly longs to have a friend or lover who accepts and supports her just the way she is.
* SatisfiedStreetRat: She rather enjoys being part of a network of thieves.
* ScrewYouElves:
** She dishes this out on Solas when he makes assumptions about her past.
---> '''Sera''': You think the only reason I'm not elfy is because I had no choice? Poor me, right. Well, I've seen, and I know. Elven life is backwards and boring.
** The revelations of "What Pride Had Wrought" [[spoiler:such as the Elves destroying themselves in a civil war]] have her laughing with glee, since they "prove" to her that the Elves really were just arseholes like everyone else. [[KickTheDog She does this while laughing in a potentially heartbroken Lavellan's face]].
** If Sera is romanced by Inquisitor Lavellan, Sera refusing to stop doing this [[spoiler:can end their relationship]].
* SelfServingMemory: It's implied that Sera at least somewhat embellishes her memory of her foster mother being "a bitch" and "a monster" because she's still angry and hurt over [[spoiler:her foster mother's lie about baking cookies and trying to hide it by claiming the baker didn't like elves]]. The Inquisitor and Cole can posit that her foster mother honestly meant well but hurt Sera by accident, rather than deliberate malice or indifference, though it's never confirmed either way.
* SheCleansUpNicely: If the Inquisitor marries her at the beginning of ''Trespasser'', Sera temporarily switches her raggedy standard outfit for a gorgeous robe in white and gold that does wonders for her looks. She still hasn't gotten around to letting someone else cut her hair properly, though, but it shows that she ''can'' doll herself up quite a bit when she wants to.
* SimpleMindedWisdom: Occasionally makes surprisingly profound statements based on straightforward observations, which stump even the more book-smart party members. For example, when Solas badgers her one conversation too many about organizing the Red Jennies to dispose of the nobility for good:
-->'''Sera''': What, just lop off the top? What does that do, [[FullCircleRevolution except make a new top to frig it all up?]]\
'''Solas''': I... forgive me. You are right.
* SirSwearsALot: Tends to pepper her speech with random, strangely-arranged curses.
* SlapSlapKiss: It's possible to play the romance this way. Particularly after Adamant.
-->'''Sera:''' ''(smiling)'' We really need a bigger gap between fighting and kissing.
* SleepingWithTheBoss: Shames Briala for doing this with Celene after the ''Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts'' [[spoiler:if the Inquisitor helped Briala blackmail Gaspard or reunite with Celene]]. If Sera is romanced, she acknowledges she too "bedded her way to power," but doesn't want it to make her "stupid" like Briala.
* SmallStepsHero: Detests causing common folk harm for an abstract "greater good".
* SorryImGay: If a male Inquisitor persists in flirting with her.
-->'''Sera''': We have too much in common, yeah? Because we both like women?
* SpitTake: After Adamant, the Inquisitor can jokingly suggest marriage while Sera is taking a big swig of wine. With predictable results.
* SpoiledBrat: In a sense. Being a SatisfiedStreetRat who could steal what she needed and skip town whenever things got too difficult or boring, Sera never had to mature or learn to put other people's needs above her own, and thus struggles with the concept of empathy or sticking around after things get "hard."
* TheSpymaster: She has her own network of spies independent of the Inquisition, though she isn't any more in charge than any other Friend of Red Jenny. A series of war table missions involves exploiting Sera's Red Jenny connections to disrupt the Elder One's operations.
* StrawAffiliation: On the giving and receiving end of this in regards to elves.
** On the one hand, Sera hates when people assume she's "elfy" or cares about elven causes (like being able to worship their own gods, [[FightingForAHomeland gain a new homeland]], or avoid humans) just because she happens to be biologically an elf.
** On the other hand, Sera is [[{{Hypocrite}} very guilty]] of enforcing these same fallacies on other elves. If an elf accepts even some "efly" beliefs, she assumes they must fanatically embrace ''all'' of elven culture's more toxic attitudes, such as desiring "lost glory," hating humans, or refusing to accept non-elfy elves.
--->'''Lavellan:''' There's so much history there. What if some of it ''is'' true?\
'''Sera:''' Frig. You're going elfy.\
'''Lavellan:''' [[FlatWhat What?]]\
'''Sera:''' It's when fairy stories make your ears droop for "lost glory," but "glory" squats in the woods and smells like halla arse!
* TagalongKid: Sort of. Cole might be more childlike mentally, but Sera is by far the youngest of the Inquisition. She was a kid during the Fifth Blight ten years ago, which puts her in her early twenties at most, while most of the companions are in their thirties and forties.
* TaughtByExperience: Sera's archery skills were learned entirely from trial and error.
* TerribleArtist:
** According to what Cole picks up from her thoughts, she could potentially be this.
--->'''Cole''': You should ''not'' paint. It would be very bad if you did.
** Considering how many lewd drawings Sera enjoys making, Cole could be referring to that as well. However, in ''Trespasser'' it's revealed that two years of practice have led to Sera becoming an excellent sketch artist who draws from life, subverting the trope - though once her drawing are completed, she doesn't exhibit or preserve them.
* TerroristsWithoutACause: The Red Jenny organization strikes back against those that oppress the common people and... that's it. They have the structure and organization of a massive terrorist or political movement, but no long-term plans or ideas for permanent social change whatsoever. In party banter, trying to wrap his head around this breaks Solas' brain, [[spoiler: and he is literally ''the god of revolution''. Two years later in the DLC does give them more of a cause after working for the Divine.]]
* ThatCameOutWrong: Occasionally she realizes she said something that makes it sound like she's attracted to men, such as when she comments that Blackwall needs to lighten up by suggesting she'd like to see him out of his armor.
-->'''Sera''': ... Not like that.
* ThrowingYourSwordAlwaysWorks: Subverted when she attempts to throw a regular dagger at a noble that angers her in one of her sidequests. The dagger lands flat against his chest and falls to the ground as expected - right before she starts pummeling him. Double subverted when it turns out to be ExactlyWhatIAimedAt; it was just a ploy to trick him into bending over to pick it up so she could knee him in the face.
* TookALevelInKindness: Two years later after the battle against the Elder One, she has matured somewhat. While she still plays pranks, she is now willing to work for nobles, provided that they help the common folk and are not an ass [[spoiler:which also possibly extends to the Divine]], a bit more open minded about being wrong, and would even comfort an elven Inquisitor [[spoiler:after learning about what happened in the Temple of Fen'Harel, a far cry from her laughing in a bare-faced Lavellan's face, or scorn after The Temple of Mythal]], and will rather maturely talk to [[spoiler:an Inquisitor she broke up with due to religious differences, and they can reflect on where things went wrong]].
* {{Troll}}: Sera seems to really enjoy making others a little uncomfortable, and loves playing pranks on others, and disrupting common social conventions. Her icon even resmbles the traditional "troll" expression.
* UnequalPairing: Discussed if Sera is romanced by Inquisitor Trevelyan. Sera is aware that other humans might object to them being together because they feel a human noble is "taking advantage" of an elf, but since Sera is a SatisfiedStreetRat who can leave or use the Red Jennies to retaliate, she doesn't feel there's a power imbalance at all.
-->'''Trevelyan:''' Is there something wrong with me being human?\
'''Sera:''' You tell me, ''Lady Trevelyan''. It's your people who always get a hair up their arse about it. "Oh, the Inquisitor took an elf. Of course she did. She's taking advantage of... some rubbish, I don't even know."
* TheUnintelligible: A common (in-universe) reaction tends to be "What exactly are you actually ''saying?! Sera"'' It's mainly due to her {{Motor Mouth}}ing, and frequent use of BuffySpeak.
* UnskilledButStrong: An odd variation. While Sera is quite skilled as a Rogue Archer, she doesn't have any actual formal training in Archery and is self taught. She had to learn all of her skills on her own and it took years of practice.
* WarForFunAndProfit: Well, [[TerroristsWithoutACause class warfare]], anyway. She pranks and kills abusive nobles for kicks, then robs them blind and keeps all the money she steals afterwards. She also admits up front that she's partially joining the Inquisition to pad her own pockets.
-->'''Sera''': Stopping wars should earn more sovereigns than this. We need things back to normal for coin to be flowing again.
* WhatTheHellHero:
** The Inquisitor can deliver one to her after [[spoiler:her actions lead to the deaths of some of her friends in her personal quest]].
** [[spoiler:A female Dalish Inquisitor who romanced Solas can potentially yell at Sera and call her out for being insensitive, particularly after she laughs over the revelations about what the vallaslin actually are.]]
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: While Sera has had plenty of [[FriendsWithBenefits casual flings]] before, her romance with the Inquisitor is the first time she's ever ''loved'' someone deeply enough to fear losing them. [[AngerBornOfWorry She gets very upset and confused by it]], naturally.
* WhyDidYouMakeMeHitYou: Due to her AngerBornOfWorry, Sera can physically lash out at the Inquisitor a couple times, even if in a romance. However, in each case Sera blames the Inquisitor for worrying her enough to lash out at them, quickly brushes it off, and expects them to do the same. If the Inquisitor gets angry or calls her out on it, they just earn an approval loss.
** After Adamant, [[spoiler:if she was present]], Sera can try to clock the Inquisitor in the face while holding a large sextant (a metal handheld navigation item).
** After [[spoiler:Mythal, if you drank from the Well]], Sera can point a drawn arrow at the Inquisitor's face. [[spoiler:Though her dialogue makes it clear it's because she believes they'd been possessed by whatever was in the Well itself, nevertheless if the Inquisitor gets angry then Sera gives a BackhandedApology: "[[NeverMyFault Fine, all right. Sorry I don't know how to deal with rubbish no one was meant to.]]"]]
* WildCard: Described as such in promos, and comes across as such in-game.
* WithUsOrAgainstUs: Dislikes elven culture's "us against them" attitude regarding humans, since she likes "them". That said, Sera also has this attitude regarding "elfy" elves and everyone else, and "big people" against the common folk. If an Inquisitor who has strong feelings on the Elven faith is in a romance with Sera, [[spoiler:she will force them to verbally denounce their elven faith or she will dump them]].
-->'''Sera:''' Take your elves. I'm just people.
* WomanChild: Besides her tendency to make farting sounds and draw butts, Sera also can show a lack of emotional maturity, such as calling people "stupid" or childishly insulting them if they say something she doesn't like. Varric lampshades it in their banter after she blows off his attempts at pointing out the holes in her logic. By ''Trespasser'', while she maintains her love of immature humour, her emotional depth and concern over a friended/romanced Inquisitor has come a long way, as is emphasized by her concerns.
-->'''Varric''': Is this the part where you tell me my face is stupid?\
'''Sera''': Your face is stu-- ''[beat]'' Shut up!
* WordAssociationTest: Dorian tries this on her. 'Demon', 'magister,' and 'thaumaturgy'? 'Arrows', 'arrows,' and 'arrows' (although she needs to ask what the last one means).
* YouAreACreditToYourRace:
** If "nobility" can be considered a "race." She tells the Inquisitor (of any origin) later that one reason she joined them is because they were only a minor "big person" at the time they met, so part of her plan was to keep them from getting ''too'' big. If befriended, she tells the Inquisitor that they are the only "big person" she likes.
** She can also invoke this with a Dalish or Mage Inquisitor, since both fall under Sera's FantasticRacism.
-->'''Solas:''' Just to be clear, you wish me to manipulate the delicate balance of the primordial energy of the Fade... faster?\
'''Sera:''' ''[if romanced by a mage]'' You're not making it worse. It's bad enough you people do that at ''all!'' ''[{{beat}}]'' Not you, Inky, you're good.
* YouKnowImBlackRight: Sera will make bitter or spiteful remarks about the Dalish to or in front of a Dalish Inquisitor, and occasionally mages/magic to a Mage Inquisition. They can occasionally call her out on this, though it just earns an approval loss. Sera knows exactly what you are and isn't concerned with how offended you may be.
** Sera can also illicit this response from mage companions in party banter since she DoesNotLikeMagic.
-->'''Solas:''' Just to be clear, you wish me to manipulate the delicate balance of the primordial energy of the Fade... faster?\
'''Sera:''' You're not making it worse. It's bad enough you people do that at ''all!''\
'''Dorian:''' ''[if in the party]'' That seems unnecessary.\
'''Vivienne:''' ''[if in the party]'' My dear, kindly ''shut it''.\
'''Inquisitor:''' ''[if a mage and not in a romance]'' ''(sighs)''
* YouKnowWhatYouDid: If Sera's Romantic Approval becomes high enough, Sera has a nightmare where the Inquisitor left forever and freaks out [[WhatIsThisFeeling since this is the first time she's ever loved someone enough to fear losing them]]. However, Sera treats the Inquisitor's actions in the dream as if they're real, childishly refuses to talk to her for a while, and pressures her to apologize and comfort Sera for what she did in the dream. The Inquisitor can call her out on it.
-->'''Inquisitor:''' You can't be upset at what I did in a dream. They aren't real!\
'''Sera:''' They're real somewhere! That's what the Fade is: bloody dreamland. And you already fell in the thing!
