->''"To me, the Hokage is just a path. Just because my grandpa and dad are Hokage, doesn't mean that I have to walk the same path. Sarada… What I'm really aiming for is to become a shinobi like your dad. I'm going to follow my own ninja way."''

The main character, TheHero of ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'', [[ProtagonistTitle In case you couldn't tell]]. Naruto and Hinata's son. Born shortly after his parents wedding and the eldest child of the Uzumaki Family. Boruto used to look up to his father when he was very young but soon his admiration changed to resentment when Naruto was appointed Hokage. Due to the Hokage's heavy workload, Naruto found himself unintentionally neglecting his family, causing Boruto to lash out with pranks to get his father's attention. Boruto ended up hating the Hokage's job and makes it known that the Hokage is something he NEVER wants to become, causing some friction with his teammate Sarada, who DOES admire the position and wishes to become it someday. After the events of his own movie, Boruto eases up on his father and comes to understand the hardships of Hokage, thus restoring his happy relationship with Naruto again.

A genin in Team Konohamaru. As far as ability goes, he proves to be much more talented compared to his father, but unlike him, he doesn't really like to train and doesn't really want to be acknowledged by anyone. This makes him rather unmotivated to train and progress, which all changes after Momoshiki's attack on Konoha. Now, Boruto's dream is to become as strong as his teacher Sasuke and protect his home from the shadows.

[[folder:A-F]]
* AccidentalKiss: Subverted. In episode 38, Sarada has quick reflexes and thus Boruto kissed the sole of her shoe instead of her mouth.
* TheAce: Boruto is quite popular among his peers and is able to make friends wherever he goes. This along with his ChildProdigy status and BlueBlood made everyone believe that he will follow in the footsteps of his father and paternal grandfather into becoming a Hokage.
* AchievementsInIgnorance: Boruto invented by accident the only type of Rasengan that can be thrown, without knowing that the Rasengan was never used as projectile.
* AdaptationDyeJob: His eyes are blue in the manga, but are colored lavender in ''The Last''. This is corrected for his own movie debut.
* AdaptationalIntelligence: Zigzagged. The anime portrays him as TheAce, a fairly good tactician, and one of the best fighters of the Leaf Village. But in order to adapt the ''Boruto'' movie as faithfully as possible, his characterization is altered to make him less intelligent and strategic. However, in the anime, he's a little smarter and more subtle when it comes to cheating with the Scientific Ninja Tool in the Chunin Exam, using only one extra clone to beat Shikadai. This allows him to get away with cheating longer than in the movie.
* AdvertisedExtra: Even though he's the one taking central stage of promotional material (to a degree of sharing a cover with Luffy and his father), Boruto only made a small cameo in the entirety of ''Naruto Gaiden''. Even the last chapter's preview still advertises the Gaiden as "Naruto and Boruto's" story when that's nowhere close to truth.
* AlmightyJanitor: Boruto is without doubt a prodigy in terms of his strength and ability to learn jutsu, Kakashi acknowledging even before graduating from the academy that Boruto is powerful enough to match a average chunin and he only grows from there. That said, he is slow to develop the other features required of a chunin, and thus hasn't ranked up as of yet.
* AlwaysSecondBest: While not overlooked, his accomplishments are often viewed in relation to Naruto, namely that he is amazing because Naruto is amazing. Thus one of his main goals is to escape this perspective. Being the best in and of itself isn't necessarily something he seeks, but if it gets him out of Naruto's shadow he does want to be better than him.
* TheApprentice: He becomes an apprentice to his father's old rival, Sasuke Uchiha.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: [[spoiler:After easily countering Mitsuki's assault and sparing his life, Boruto tries to convince him that he's his "sun" and not Kawaki. Mitsuki, angered by this, has a snake wrap around him to bite him, only for Boruto to ask why the snake hasn't already bitten him while he's talking. This, along with Boruto refusing to defend himself even though he could have done so by now, is what finally gets Mitsuki to listen to him.]]
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: Being the best fighter in class, Boruto often look down on his opponents, even against those who are more experience than him.
* AscendedExtra: He went from being a LastEpisodeNewCharacter to the protagonist of his own spin-off movie. It goes even further with a new manga and anime starring him!
* AttentionWhore: Much of his pranks are done so as to receive undivided attention from his extremely busy father, Naruto. Also, much of his early reasons for his admiration of Sasuke also stemmed around his desire to outshine his father as a shinobi while not becoming a Hokage.
* AwesomeButImpractical: The [[spoiler:Uzuhiko Rasengan seems overpowered at first glance, being a jutsu that links up the struck target with the Earth's chakra (and its rotation) itself, causing a debilitating level of dizziness seemingly regardless of how powerful the target is, an effect that will continue without end unless the user of the jutsu rescinds the effect. However, in practice it has fairly limited application. It takes some prep time in battle to use, giving ample opportunity for an opponent to interrupt it if they know what is happening, and the jutsu itself causes little damage. In most cases it would be more efficient to simply kill the opponent or use a less elaborate means to incapacitate them. However, it ''is'' very useful if you're up against a strong opponent (who would likely shrug off most non-lethal attacks) who you don't want to kill and who is prideful or ignorant enough to take the jutsu lightly]].
* BadassFamily: A member of the Uzumaki clan and equally related to the Hyuga clan.
* BareFistedMonk: He inherited his mother's fighting style, the Gentle Fist, which references the Eight Trigrams in its moves; it's even based of a real martial art called Baguazhang. He cannot use the style the way a Hyuga can, since he cannot see chakra points (normally), and so has to put more purely physical power into the hits.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: He asks Sasuke to make him his apprentice so that he could discover his father's weakness and surpass him. Well, he does find Naruto's weak spot: himself. Naruto is so preoccupied with his son's safety he turns his back on the [[BigBadDuumvirate people]] attacking him.
* BeneathTheMask: Under his SmugSuper attitude, there lies a insecure little child who just wants to be [[WellDoneSonGuy acknowledged by his father]] and to be seen [[IAmNotMyFather outside of his shadow]].
* BerserkButton: He does not like the Hokage title, job, or anything to do with it and early in the series can get quickly upset whenever it gets in the way of what he wants. Grows out of this before too long though.
* BigBrotherInstinct: He's absolutely this towards his little sister, Himawari, whom he deeply adores. He even threatens his father to '''not''' miss her birthday.
* BigManOnCampus: Boruto is a noted troublemaker but remains a popular leading figure in the academy because he is so talented and personable.
* BizarreTasteInFood: Boruto is always excited to try the strange new burgers offered at Thunder Burger.
* BlueBlood: His mother, Hinata Hyuga, is the former heiress of the Hyuga clan, one of the four noble clans of Konohagakure.
* BlowYouAway: His Gale Palm and Boruto Stream jutsus.
* BodyguardCrush: Implied with Sarada. As part of their ShipTease, Boruto intends to protect her and Konoha when she becomes Hokage.
* BookDumb: {{Inverted|Trope}}. His intelligence in the data stats show that he is not the brightest in Team Konohamaru (he is fifth place in intelligence out of the six ninjas), but Boruto being portrayed as incredibly book smart is hampered by his brash and often thoughtless way of doing things. In fact, he has the top grades in his class but often fails to apply the book learning wisely.
* BrattyHalfPint: Back when he was an academy student, Boruto was a brash and troublesome kid who loved to pull pranks in search of attention, just like his father was.
* BreakTheHaughty: Due to never experiencing any of the hardships his parents had gone through during childhood, Boruto becomes quite arrogant and doesn't understand the concept of teamwork well. He even resorts to [[spoiler:cheating if it means the task is done easier, whether at video games or at life.]] Following the events of his own movie, Boruto is humbled by his experiences and becomes a better person as a result.
* BreakOutTheMuseumPiece: He dons his father's old jacket and Sasuke's scratched forehead protector.
* BrilliantButLazy: While Boruto is a ChildProdigy, unlike his parents at his age, he lacks their work ethic. His friends call him out on this, with Shikadai and Inojin calling out Boruto's use of cheats at video games, and Sarada stating that Boruto can be a brilliant shinobi and team-player if he would just get his head in the game. It's noted that a lack of real challenge in the academy led to him being arrogant and unprepared when facing people who were on par with or stronger than him.
* CallingTheOldManOut: Subverted. He yells at Naruto for ''seemingly'' caring more about the Hokage position than he does his own family and wishes that he never had him as a father. However, he doesn't realize that Naruto ''is'' trying his best to spend time with his family and he ''does'' love his family very much, but being the leader of a country leaves him little time to spare.
* CantCatchUp: He feels this way about the expectations put on his shoulders; at the beginning of the Naruto Gaiden, he was shown very excited to become a ninja, but during the timeskip between Gaiden and the movie, he seems to be completely lost due to his father's shadow over him and doesn't even want to take part in Chuunin Exams.
* CharacterDevelopment: In his own spin-off movie, Boruto get ''a lot'' of this.
** He learns ''exactly'' how important his father's job as Hokage and why he is so busy.
** He learns the importance of working hard as well as teamwork.
** He grows to admire Sasuke's shinobi way for what it is rather than just appearing cool.
*** This continues in his own series, where after the movie arc, he initially grows resentful of Ninja Tools, before learning that they're not inherently bad, and that it depends on how they're used.
* CheatersNeverProsper: Initially, Boruto doesn't see the problem with cheating to get ahead of the curve in either video games or [[spoiler:utilizing high-level Ninjutsu]], but when he finally gets his father to notice him, he begins to crack under the pressure and [[CantGetAwayWithNothing winds up getting caught]] and [[HumblePie humiliated]] in front of the whole [[spoiler:Chunin Exam Stadium, which includes the other four Kages, his teammates, and his entire family. Ouch]].
* ChildProdigy:
** Something he ''definitely'' didn't get from [[IdiotHero his]] [[InadequateInheritor parents]] but from his namesakes; his maternal cousin and paternal grandfather. In addition to being a Straight-A student with little effort, he is already able to use Lightning, Water, and Wind Release at will as well as the Shadow Clone technique and invents new techniques on the fly, such as his trademark Boruto Stream. He is no slouch at Taijutsu either, being able to effectively use a version of the Hyuga's Gentle Fist Style despite his lack of a Byakugan (he is not normally able to target chakra points). ''Then'' there's the fact that he is able simply by instinct to infuse his Rasengan with an elemental nature (in his case Lightning), not even realizing he had done so (in fact it takes more practice for him to figure out how to use a regular Rasengan), which the Fourth Hokage, a renowned genius in his own right, failed to do and Naruto only accomplished by practicing with hundreds of clones long enough that he injured himself. In the anime, he underwent the same training as Naruto did to learn the wind element, and made far greater progress than his father did. Understanding all the tricks in record time and without the need to utilize hundreds of clones for assistance. That said, he was unable to use the Rasenshuriken as Naruto could. His prodigy status also proves to be a severe weakness a number of times early in the series, Boruto suffering from overconfidence and lack of motivation at different times.
** The timeskip demonstrates how Boruto a prodigy is. While his peers had a hard time taking down 1 Shinju, Boruto cuts down in droves. Not to mention he created a new type of Rasengan that semi-permanently debuffs the enemy and also learned the [[spoiler:Flying Thunder God Technique that seems to be more potent as it can cross dimensions (albeit, Boruto states he is not as adept with using it as Minato was)]] within the timeskip.
* {{Chuunibyou}}: Boruto starts acting like one when he thinks he's unlocked his Byakugan, immiting his favorite movie star, complete with sunglasses and a smug attitude. Everyone else just finds his behavior weird and think he's making it up to get attention
* CluelessChickMagnet: Sumire admits she has an obvious crush on him while Sarada has a lot of ship tease with him as well and just like his parents before him, he has no clue about any possible attraction.
* ColorMotifs: Boruto is represented by the color pink, the color between his father's orange and his mother's purple.
* CombatParkour: Boruto demonstrated from his very first appearance (as a young genin) how agile he is, by jumping from building to building and than on a train.
* CompositeCharacter: An older Boruto takes on the appearance and traits of both [[spoiler:Kakashi and Obito. Like Kakashi, he now sports a vertical scar over his right eye and keeps the eye closed until he needs to activate his MagicalEye. Like Obito, all of his powers from his Bloodline Limit only resides in one eye, and the ''right eye'' no less and also has teleportation powers that can cross dimensions]].
* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: To Naruto.
** Whereas Naruto grew up without a family and thus acted out as a means for attention and affection, Boruto has a family and acts out to get attention from his father. Similarly, Naruto's lifelong dream was to become Hokage, while Boruto has no interest in it. Lastly, Naruto was a weak ninja as a kid, where's Boruto is a ChildProdigy like his late paternal grandfather.
** Boruto is incredibly book smart, getting top marks in class and finding tests too easy, while Naruto struggled with the most basic of ninja academics at that age. Conversely, Naruto was very cunning and had a knack for unorthodox tactics and crafty ingenuity under pressure, while Boruto tended, initially, to charge into danger with arrogance and impatience instead of assessing situations before acting. This underlines their key differences, as Naruto had to fight for every advantage in life and battle, teaching him pragmatism, while such things come easily to Boruto, making him overconfident.
** Naruto did have the Nine Tails, but had a difficult time accessing it when he was still a child. He wasn't naturally TheAce and had to work hard to reach his goals and get there. Boruto, meanwhile, has TheGift but would rather slack off and even cheat to get ahead. This extends to their philosophy as people who fight. Where he disapproves of the Hokage's responsibility to prioritize TheNeedsOfTheMany over those close to him, he chooses to instead never forsake his friends and family.
* CoolBigBro: He is very sweet and doting to Himawari and even ''threatened'' his father to not miss her birthday.
* CrazyPrepared: [[spoiler:When Kawaki interferes with Boruto’s interrogation with Code, allowing the latter to get away, Boruto is revealed to have already planted one of Koji’s toads onto Code so he can follow Code to his hideout with the Flying Thunder God Technique.]]
* {{Curse}}: Momoshiki [[spoiler:warns Boruto after being killed by the boy that not only is his eye cursed, but killing a God means he can never be normal. The curse seal karma appearing on Boruto's palm afterwards.]]
* DarkIsNotEvil: Boruto wears a black tracksuit and despite his brattiness, he's a brave and selfless individual when the chips are down.
* DeadGuyJunior: His name (which can be read as "Bolt") was inspired by his mother's deceased cousin Neji, whose name translates to "screw".
* DeadpanSnarker: Unlike Sarada and Mitsuki, Boruto is not very witty, but he gets a sharp tongue once in a while whenever he [[SnarkToSnarkCombat argues with Sarada]].
-->'''Sarada:''' Normally, if you were a real man, you'd defer it to a girl.\
'''Boruto:''' Sure, if ''you'' were a normal girl...
* DeathGlare: Gives a fantastic one to [[spoiler:Ao]] in chapter 22 of ''Boruto'' manga.
* DeclarationOfProtection: In ''Boruto: The Movie'', Boruto makes a promise to one of his friends. Specifically, Boruto tells Sarada that he intends to protect her and Konoha when she becomes Hokage.
* DemotedToExtra: For ''Naruto Gaiden'', which was advertised to be the story of him and Naruto but revolves around Sarada instead.
* DemonicPossession: This is what happens to people who are marked with Karma. During the battle with Boro, Momoshiki briefly takes over Boruto and destroys Boro.
* {{Determinator}}: During his Academy years, Boruto showed shades of this in dire situations whereas he was otherwise the epitome of BrilliantButLazy. Once he TookALevelInJerkass following graduation, he steadily loses those traits and even resorts to cheating during the Chunin Exams despite his vast talent. It was only following the traumatic events and the humiliation he faced during that arc that he becomes this. His fight with [[spoiler:Ao]] cements that he has completely become this.
** Best shown in Chapter 80, [[spoiler: when Eida subconsciously uses the Omnipotence Shinjutsu on Kawaki's desire to change the circumstances of his and Boruto's lives, Boruto refuses to give in to Momoshiki's taunts that he has nothing left, and he decides to train to become stronger to face Kawaki instead of despairing about his situation]].
* DitzyGenius: Boruto is the only member of his class not to realize the written portion of his exam was meant to be too difficult to solve to encourage the class to cheat without getting caught to test a ninja's information gathering skills. Boruto however got a perfect score on the exam because he found the test ''easy''.
* ElementalPunch: He has a lightning elemental punch but it wasn't powerful enough to demagnetize Shinki's Iron Sand on its own.
* EnemyMine: Turns out that during the TimeSkip [[spoiler:he has allied with Koji Kashin, seemingly to eliminate the threat of the Ten-Tails. and while Kashin Koji is more of an AntiVillain than a true villain, it is still unclear if they teamed up out of trust between each other or just to pursue the same goal]].
* EnergyBall: Unlike his predecessors,[[note]]Exempting Naruto lobbing the Rasenshuriken with Sage Mode.[[/note]] Boruto is actually capable of ''throwing'' his Rasengan.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: The epilogue starts with him trying to pull off a prank.
* EyeScream: The flashfoward at the beginning of his series shows him sporting a long scar over his right eye, signifying that this would happen to him at some point.
** It does happen [[spoiler: in chapter 78, where Boruto shields Sarada from an attack of Kawaki, resulting in his right eye receiving the injury]].
* FacialMarkings: He inherited Naruto's fox whiskers, but only two on each cheek.
* FamilyThemeNaming:
** Boru'''to''' shares his last syllable with his father, Naru'''to''' and his paternal grandfather, Mina'''to'''.
** In Japan's preview show segment, Kishimoto confirmed that Boruto (which is how the English word "Bolt" is pronounced in Japanese) was named directly after his late uncle Neji's AffectionateNickname, which meant "screw" in Japanese. Not only was this name Naruto and Hinata's [[MeaningfulName tribute and remembrance towards Neji]], but this also fits in with Naruto's spiral motif.
* FastballSpecial: His Boruto Stream attack involves using his Shadow Clones to give him a NitroBoost with their Wind Release: Gale Palm, however much like Kakashi's use of Chidori/Raikiri, he's moving too fast to read his opponents move, leaving him vulnerable to a counter. To compensate for this, he and Mitsuki can use the same technique to launch Sarada at an enemy, who's Sharingan negates this weakness.
* FighterMageThief: When Boruto, Shikadai, and Inojin play their favourite RolePlayingGame together, Boruto is an offense-focused [[ThePaladin Light Warrior]] dual-wielding a light sword and a cursed one, effectively acting like [[TheSneakyGuy the Rogue]]. In terms of his team itself, Boruto is the Mage, having excellent Ninjutsu, and several nature elements already under his belt despite being fairly younger. However, he's weaker than Sarada in physical strength, and while intelligent and crafty, is not as strategic as Mutsuki, who is very cunning.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: Unlike his sister who is kind, Boruto pulls pranks, disrespects their father, and is quite arrogant.
* ForceAndFinesse: He is the Finesse using the graceful Gentle Fist style of martial arts to Sarada's SuperStrength Force.
* FragileSpeedster: According to the stats of all the New Era shinobi, Boruto is the fastest, but his strength is 4th place out of the six ninjas. His melee stats rank three out of five stars as well. He's the fastest in Team Konohamaru, but the weakest in strength.
* FutureBadass: Boruto's manga opens with what appears to be a FlashForward to a BadFuture where [[spoiler:Naruto is dead/missing/gone (it's ambiguous), Konoha is wrecked and Boruto, who's picked up a nasty scar over one eye along the way, is about to throw down with the guy that did it]].
[[/folder]]
[[folder:G-P]]
* GenerationXerox:
** Like his father, Naruto:
*** He pulls pranks to get attention just like Naruto did.
*** Like how Naruto bears a striking resemblance to Minato but got his face and eye shape from Kushina, Boruto bears a striking resemblance to Naruto but got his face and eye shape from Hinata.
*** He's the shortest ninja of Team 7, just like how Naruto was.
*** He also calls his parents the same way Naruto did with his ("Tou-chan" for Dad, "Kaa-chan" for Mom).
*** In the dub of ''The Last'', he shares the same voice actress as Naruto.
*** Similarly to Naruto, he is in Team 7 with two teammates associated with the colors red and blue (Sarada being red like Sakura and Mitsuki being blue like Sasuke).
** Like his mother, Hinata:
*** Like Hinata, Boruto wishes to be acknowledged by his father.
*** Like Hinata, Boruto has a younger sister with the Byakugan.
** He resembles his uncle Neji and paternal grandfather Minato with his prodigy status. With Neji, he even shares the same type of relationship with Naruto.
** Similar to Asuma in his youth (at least according to him), in which he didn't get along with his father being the Hokage and being overshadowed as ninja by his Hokage father.
** Beside voicing wanting to become a shadow ninja like Sasuke, the circumstances of his life push him to follow Sasuke's steps even unwillingly.
*** First of all, in several battles, namely against Iwabee and Kakashi, Boruto makes similar fighting movements. And every time a new intro pays homage to ''Naruto'', Boruto is placed as Sasuke.
*** He is also a ChildProdigy who finished at the top of his class.
*** He has a cursed marks, the karma, implanted in by force, by a villain who wants his body and replace Boruto's conscience with his, in same manner Orochimaru wanted to do with Sasuke.
*** Had a strained relationship with his own father, albeit for different reasons, but is total MommasBoy instead. Hinata herself happens to be a dark-haired YamatoNadeshiko, just as Mikoto was.
*** Has lightning release like Sasuke.
* GiftedlyBad: Boruto is proud of his nonexistent artistic talent, happily trying to get his ideas across through sketches that wouldn't look out of place in a pre-school. He doesn't seem to realize this at all even after Sai and Inojin (who are both artists by trade) call him out on it.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: An older Boruto now sports a scar on his right eye that leads into his forehead protector. Even a piece of his eyebrow is missing.
* GuileHero: Boruto's battle with [[spoiler:Ao]] definitely establishes him as this, if his ChildProdigy status hadn't already done that.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Blue eyed, blond and selfless.
* TheHeart: Is this to his entire Academy class. This point is particularly emphasised by those who appeared for the Academy graduation exams alongside him in Episode 37. He is definitely considered this by his teachers and mentors for his peers.
-->'''Iwabee:''' You're the nucleus of this class, Boruto.
* HereditaryHairstyle: PlayedWith. Boruto has spiky, blonde hair like his father and grandfather, but in a different style: His hair is wavy which flares out on the sides and back, is shaped like a leaf, and has an ahoge.
* HeroesPreferSwords: Wields a chokuto-style sword in the ColdOpen. Within the main story, he’s seen wielding a special chakra blade.
* HeroicLineage: He's the son of [[TheHero Naruto]] and [[LadyOfWar Hinata]], both of whom are veterans of the Fourth Shinobi World War and have [[Anime/TheLastNarutoTheMovie saved the world on other occasions]]. His father is also the reincarnation of Asura Ōtsutsuki, the younger son of the Sage of Six Paths; and his mother was dubbed the Byakugan Princess by Hamura Ōtsutsuki, the Sage of Six Path's brother.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Shikadai is introduced as his best friend. Later, he gains a close bond with Mitsuki, declaring he was so close that they were practically in sync.
* HiddenDepths:
** Boruto has shown to be quite perceptive, quickly realizing other people's true intentions from the look in their eyes, and is considerate of other people's feelings.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: In regards to his father; while on the outside he is openly disrespectful towards him, in reality Boruto deeply cares for and loves his father and just wants his acknowledgement.
* HumblePie: In his movie as part of his character development. He leaves his arrogant ways and accepts the importance of hard work.
* {{Hypocrite}}: For all his talk that his father doesn't care about other people's feelings, Boruto acts selfishly most of the time in the movie until his CharacterDevelopment.
* IAmNotMyFather: He explicitly does not want the thing that is his father's stated goal for most if not all of his initial series. Ironically, he takes on many of his father's old traits such as desperately looking for attention as well as looking after his friends.
-->"I don't even want to become...the Hokage!!"
* IdiotHair: Has a small ahoge between his bangs and his back spikes.
* InconsistentSpelling: "Bolt" or "Boruto"? The [[http://www.boruto-movie.com/ official movie website]] for ''Boruto: Naruto the Movie'' uses "Boruto" while Viz's official manga translation originally used "Bolt", but later switched to "Boruto" as well.
* IndyPloy: Boruto is an adept of improvising on spot.
-->'''Sarada:''' Anyway, I'd hate to be teamed with someone who leaves everything up to chance, like you. You always act without a plan for success.\
'''Boruto:''' Haven't you heard about the phrase, "playing it by the ear"?
* InnocentlyInsensitive:
** At the beginning of ''Gaiden'', Boruto complains how his father is never around in front of Sarada, whose father is never around since her birth.
** Boruto fails to understand his father's hardship during his youth and thinks that without Minato, Naruto has a good childhood. He also misinterprets that Naruto is the type of person who doesn't care of others.
* InvisibleMeansUndodgeable: Boruto's Vanishing Rasengan goes invisible before striking making it difficult for enemies to predict it coming.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler:At the end of chapter 66. Courtesy of Kawaki, after he got possessed by Momoshiki again, all because they agreed to this as a last resort plan in case Boruto would succumb to the Otsutsuki again]].
* ImprobableHairstyle: He has three long bangs that hang over his forehead and the rest of his hair flares out on the sides and back, and has an ahoge on the top of his head, which resembles the stem of a leaf.
* {{Irony}}:
** Boruto's childhood was the polar opposite of Naruto's, having everything the latter could have ever wanted as a child: a number of friends, excelling in the Ninja Academy, the respect of the village and, above all, a loving family. Despite all this, he ends up doing the exact same thing his father once did (namely, vandalizing the Hokage monument) for similar reasons (a lack of attention).
** In the videogame he plays with Shikadai and Inojin he's [[ThePaladin a Light Warrior]], a LawfulGood [[IncorruptiblePurePureness goody-two-shoes]] character that protects the rest of the party, won't tell a lie to save his life and, in most [=RPGs=], refuses monetary rewards. Boruto wins the game by cheating and is not big on teamwork.
* ItsAllAboutMe: His attitude throughout his movie and in the anime following his graduation till up to the Chunin Exams arc is this: he has become incredibly self-centred, as he feels [[WellDoneSonGuy that he has to be the best to get out from under Naruto's shadow.]] This has even impacted his performance as a ninja; despite being a ChildProdigy coming from two famous clans he's lazy and normally cheats to get what he wants, as well as is a troublemaker. He's also impulsive and reckless. It takes all the trauma he suffers in the movie to snap him out of it and make him become a better person.
* IWishedYouWereDead: Yells at his father that he would rather have had no parent than a father like him. [[BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor Of course, he ends up regretting it.]]
* JerkassHasAPoint: While Boruto intially fails to understand how important Naruto's job as Hokage is, he is not ''entirely'' wrong that Naruto's frequent absence has caused Himawari and Hinata a good deal of emotional pain. Boruto eventually grows to accept his father's frequent absence. What he does not ''absolutely'' accept is Naruto breaking his promise to him by sending only a shadow clone, which disappears anyway, on Himawari's birthday party and not turning up in person.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: As disrespectful and bratty Boruto is to his father, he is shown to be well-mannered and polite to most people, but not to the point of being formal like his mother. And underneath the attitude he projects, deep down he really loves his father.
* KamehameHadoken: The Vanishing Rasengan is the only type of Rasengan that can be thrown at the opponent.
* KidFromTheFuture: He's unwillingly this when he's trapped in the past Hidden Leaf Village along with the adult Sasuke, complete with running into both of his parents (and many of the adults from his timeline) as genin. Other characters are quick to note Boruto and Naruto's similarities (both in terms of physical attributes and attitudes), although both of them are quick to downplay it. Notably, the normally nervous Hinata can converse with him without being too shy.
* LamarckWasRight: Boruto and Himawari have Naruto's fox whiskers even though they are not a genetic trait, though Naruto also had fox whiskers prior to becoming a jinchuriki as a result of one of his parents being Kurama's host.
* TheLancer: Later, as Boruto would follow Sasuke's path in protecting the Hokage in a shadow, Boruto also sees and entrusts Sarada as a future leader to inherit the Hokage title.
* LaserGuidedKarma: As noted in CheatersNeverProsper, [[spoiler: using an illegal device]] bites him right in the butt.
** Also [[spoiler: played rather literally when he kills Momoshiki: being responsible for the death of a god results in that god's [[{{Pun}} Karma]] being implanted on him. It works on multiple levels: 'karma' is fundamentally about the direct, if sometimes hidden, consequences of ones' actions]].
* TheLeader: Played straight during his Academy years where he was regarded as such. Despite not being the class representative, Boruto nearly always took the charge, whether for pranks or fun activities. He was also the Field Trip Manager during the School Trip Arc. Slowly subverted as he turns into TheLancer for Sarada's TheLeader during his early genin days. His Lancer status is reinforced by his dream which is play support to Sarada's Hokage role in the future.
* LikeFatherUnlikeSon: At first glance Boruto is the exact copy of his father. However as we get to learn more about his character, differences start to appear. First of all Boruto has the complete opposite of early childhood Naruto had, living with two [[DotingParent Doting Parents]] and [[TheCutie a little sister]]. He's also a ChildProdigy, ''very unlike'' his BoisterousWeakling father. And compared to how Naruto was at his age, Boruto is well mannered and socially adjusted. He [[{{Tsundere}} resents]] his father and has no respect for him (Naruto always respected Minato, no matter what) or the Hokage title ''nor'' he has any will to pursue his father's path.
* LineageComesFromTheFather: {{Zig Zagged}}. While most of his features come from his father, he is shown using the Hyuga clan's Gentle Fist Style.
** [[AllThereInTheManual The novelization]] of ''Boruto: The Movie'' states that his large chakra reserves are from both Naruto and Hinata's blood, but mainly towards the latter due to the Hyuga clan being the most prominent in Konoha.
** [[spoiler:Subverted in the ''Boruto'' manga where Boruto was able to sense a projection of Momoshiki due to Hinata's blood inside of him]].
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Due to not accompanying Sarada when she meant to meet her father, he has no idea who Orochimaru is.
* LoveTriangle: He is in the center of one between Sarada and Sumire, [[ObliviousToLove not that he can tell]].
* MagicalEye: Boruto has a mysterious eye power known as the Jogan which gives him [[DetectEvil the ability to detect malicious intent]], [[ThinkingUpPortals the power to cross dimensions]] and AuraVision, implicitly of a different type than what the Byakugan can detect, although it later developed the power to [[VeinOVision see the tenketsu]]. [[PowerIncontinence He has no control over its activation]] but can wield it on command by the time the ColdOpen takes place.
** Then there's Karma, and when Momoshiki takes over, it turns into a proper Byakugan.
* MagneticHero: Like his father before him, Boruto has gathered a number of close friends who might otherwise have been his enemies, like Iwabee, who started out as an antagonist and Mitsuki, who outright defies Orochimaru's orders because he's interested in seeing where Boruto's path leads, or been just another face in the crowd, like Denki.
* MakingASplash: As a prodigy, Boruto can use water jutsu without a source with his Surging Sea technique.
* MasterApprenticeChain: He is a student of Konohamaru, to whom his father was a BigBrotherMentor to. In his titular movie, he strong-arms his father's best friend/rival, Sasuke, into training him too.
* MesACrowd: Like his father, he knows the shadow clone jutsu.
* MommasBoy: He has a soft spot for his mother. Part of the reason why he relents in relaying through Sarada the lunch his mother made in ''Naruto Gaiden'' is that his father receiving it would make his mother happy.
* MoralityPet: He instinctively does his best to prevent Mitsuki from engaging in casual brutality.
* TheMostWanted: [[spoiler:After Kawaki uses Ada's omnipotency to swap everyone's memories into thinking he's Naruto's son and Boruto was an orphan boy responsible for Naruto and Hinata's deaths, everyone in Konoha (with the exception of Sarada and Sumire, who are immune to the omnipotency, and Sasuke, who trusts Sarada enough to help Boruto at her behest) starts a manhunt]].
* MouthyKid: A difference from his father, his overly cocky attitude and prodigy status makes him being able to raise his voice against authority.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: When he realizes how his actions, cheating in particular, have made things worse for him and those he cares about, especially his father.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Attacking Momoshiki with the Ninja Tool inadvertently powered him up, making him more deadly. Later against Delta, by trying to hit her with the Vanishing Rasengan while she was fighting Naruto, she ends up [[spoiler:absorbing and charging herself up, knocking Boruto down and attacking Himawari who was close by...]]
* NitroBoost: His Gale Palm ninjutsu boosts his speed allowing him to do his Boruto Stream attack.
* NinjaBrat: Just like dear old father.
* NormalFishInATinyPond: While Boruto might be the best fighter in his class, he is still an inexperienced and naïve rookie who had recently graduated from the Academy and has no idea how tough life is even in an era of peace. Being overconfident, he thinks he has the chance to take on more experienced such as Kakashi and Mirai and the only reason he won was mostly because of his underhand tactics, teamwork or his opponents holding back their full strength against him. When he encountered Momoshiki the first time and all his attacks are absorbed, Boruto becomes helpless for the first time in his life, shocked to see an opponent on a completely different level than him about to kill him. The experience humbled him substantially.
* OhCrap:
** What Boruto thinks to himself when his father is [[spoiler:accidentally knocked out by his little sister Himawari and she starts chasing him through the house.]]
** Has another one when [[spoiler:Momoshiki absorbs all of his techniques from his elemental wrist device and it runs out of energy.]] He gets an even bigger one when [[spoiler:Momoshiki fires them all back at Naruto, after augmenting them a bit]].
* OtherMeAnnoysMe: Boruto always bicker with his own shadow clones, while his shadow clones are always bickering with themselves.
* ParentalTitleCharacterization: He often refers to Naruto as "old man" (''oyaji'') due to feeling neglected by him. However, he also uses the more affectionate ''tou-chan''.
* PerformanceAnxiety: Boruto is shown to have the skills and talent to overcome the obstacles he faces in the chunin exams with his ninjutsu and shuriken skills, but his desire to look impressive in front of his father causes his confidence to waver and he instead relies on the Science Ninja Tool rather then his own abilities.
* PinkHeroine: A ''very exceptional'' male example. Boruto's main color scheme has black and white as a base with pink being his signature color. This is a case of ValuesDissonance for the western audience as in Japanese culture, pink is the traditional colour of ''masculinity'', the opposite of Western Values for pink. The color is often associated with the cherry tree, symbolising a young samurai who had died at their prime. Considering the dark implications of flashforward where [[spoiler:a sixteen years old sword-wielding Boruto is facing an enemy who implies that he killed '''Naruto''']] as well as Momoshiki's prophecy [[spoiler:which tells him that he will lose everything he holds dear]], this trope is very symbolically foreboding in nature.
* PintSizedPowerHouse: Of his class only Denki is smaller and even in the flash forward where he is sixteen Boruto is still noticeably smaller then even his father at the same age according to the anime's model sheets.
* PowerGlows: The karma glows blue every time it is used.
* PowerTattoo: How the karma manifests itself when activated.
* PowerPalms: Boruto only rarely attacks with a closed fist, preferring to use the open palmed martial arts his mother's clan is famous for.
* ThePrankster: The epilogue stars him trying to pull off a prank.
* PrincelyYoungMan: Of the SpoiledBrat type, he's considered to be "The Ouji" of Konoha. He uses his status to get his hands on the latest technology advancements and cheats for gameplays. This makes him the obvious target of Katasuke's manipulations to promote his latest ninja tool.
** In the manga, while discussing matters with Ada, Code even calls Boruto "prince".
* TheProudElite: Don't look at him badmouthing his father; he's very proud of the blood he carries (half-Hyuga, half-Uzumaki) to a degree coming off SmugSuper and accepts it all way through at the end of his movie.
* PunnyName: His name is how the [[BilingualBonus English word "Bolt" is pronounced in Japanese]]; so while "Boruto" is a play on his father's name, the "Bolt" meaning (as in either the building material or a bolt of lighting) is both referencing his late uncle Neji's name and his chakra nature.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:R-W]]
* RebelPrince: Boruto is considered as the natural candidate for the Hokage mantle by those around him and is constantly reminded of it. He does NOT want to become a Hokage and loudly states it as such.
* TheRival:
** To Kawaki, as the story starts with their confrontation. It's actually {{Downplayed|Trope}}, because their relationship evolves to be more of a brotherly one, where they try to help each other, until it was ruined by kawaki's actions (which still, had nothing to do with any sense of rivalry).
** To Sarada, just like their fathers were for each other. Also to his own father, and it comes to no surprise that he turns to his father's old rival for apprenticeship. Unlike their respective parents in their youth, though, she and Boruto are more in friendly terms.
** There also appears to be a rivalry between Boruto and Shikadai, given how much emphasis is placed on their big fight in the Chunin exams.
* RoyalBlood: He's looked to as the definite candidate for Hokage position due to his elite status. His mother is the princess of the Hyuga's main family, whereas his father is the son of legendary Fourth Hokage.
* RoyalBrat: Son of the Byakugan Princess and the Seventh Hokage, yet isn't above pulling pranks and causing trouble all around.
* TheRunaway: By the end of ''Boruto'', he becomes a missing-nin because of Kawaki, [[spoiler:who uses Eida's Omnipotence to modify everyone's memories of Boruto being Naruto's biological son and falsely accusing him of killing Naruto.]]
* SealedInsideAPersonShapedCan: Turns out to be this after Momoshiki implants Karma into him, as it is a way to slowly convert Boruto into a new copy of him.
* ScarsAreForever: Boruto sports a nasty scar over his right eye by the time of the flashfoward, given that [[spoiler:he receives it when he is 12 years old, and in chapter 78 more specifically]], this trope is very much in play.
** There is also a more unusual example, [[spoiler:in chapter 67, when Momoshiki sacrifices the remaining data of his Karma to save Boruto from dying after being ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice by Kawaki, the karma is rewired and modified, and Boruto gains a triangular shaped mark on his chest, which is visible even when the karma itself is not in use]].
* SharedFamilyQuirks: Boruto is afraid of ghosts like Naruto. He also shares the same verbal quirks as his father and paternal grandmother, with his being "dattebasa."
* ShipTease:
** Naturally, he and Sarada have a bit going on throughout his movie and even more over the course of the anime.
** Not that he realize it, but Sumire's special attention to him in the manga has romantic undertones; and he just goes along.
* ShockAndAwe: He has affinity to Lightning and from Sasuke has learned Uchiha-style shurikenjutsu which allows him to infuse his throwing stars with lightning and can also use his Thunderclap Arrow technique to electrify his own water jutsu in a combination attack. In addition, without even trying, Boruto can use his lightning element chakra to infuse his Rasengan, a feat his paternal grandfather failed to accomplish and his father could only do after training with thousands of clones.
* SignatureMove: The Boruto Stream has had a place in all of Boruto's major fights in the anime.
* SmugSuper: Unlike his [[BoisterousWeakling father]] at his age, Boruto is acting smug ''because he's good at what he does''.
* SpoiledBrat:
** His AttentionWhore behavior towards his father mostly stems from his spoiled childhood, as [[ItsAllAboutMe he wants his father all to himself]].
** Sasuke even points out his clean and new-looking mission gear to make this point; his parents spoiled him for the entirety of his early childhood so much so that he has no idea about any hardships previous generations faced.
* StockShonenHero: {{Subverted|Trope}}. He is Naruto's son and [[StrongFamilyResemblance looks near-identical]] to his father (complete with spikey hair, albeit in a different style and more combed downward), however he has a [[LikeFatherUnlikeSon completely different personality]]. His clothes are black with some pink, in contrast to the primary colours of his father. He's a powerful ChildProdigy, even before getting into the ninja academy, but is an overly cocky SmugSuper at the same time. Boruto can be knuckleheaded but is not an IdiotHero, instead being BrilliantButLazy, and he isn't quite the AllLovingHero his father is. He doesn't seem to be a BigEater but [[TrademarkFavoriteFood does like eating burgers a lot]].
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Looks near-identical to a younger Naruto, except for the rounder facial features and eye shape that he inherited from Hinata. LikeFatherLikeSon mixed with ItRunsInTheFamily, since Naruto himself looks near-identical to Minato but has Kushina's face and eye shape.
* SuperReflexes: He is agile enough to make a tiny Rasengan while being constantly hit by Boro, and backflips at the exact moment of Sarada's attack, avoiding being hit by a Chidori user at full speed.
* SuperiorSuccessor: Unlike his [[BoisterousWeakling father]] at his age, he's a ChildProdigy. He even invokes this by making it his goal to surpass his father.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: While not truly a side of Boruto, since he was implanted rather than a natural part of him, [[spoiler:Momoshiki serves as this for Boruto functionally. Whenever Momoshiki takes over his body, Boruto displays far more powerful chakra than usual (or perhaps more effective use of the chakra he has), as well as abilities he lacks normally such as Byakugan and rapid regeneration (notably healing a broken arm in seconds).]]
* SuperpowerfulGenetics: Thanks to his parents, Boruto is stemming from multiple strong bloodlines.
** Through his father, he inherited affinity for wind release and Rasengan, huge chakra-reserves and the famous Uzumaki's powerful life-force.
** From Hinata, he got the Hyugas' powerful chakra and can use the Gentle Fist, even if it's just the basic usage.
** And now, because he is both Uzumaki and Hyuga, Boruto gained access to Ōtsutsuki Clan's dojustu, the Jōgan; as well as having a rare compatibility with their ancestral seal known as Kāma.
*** This particular case gets deconstructed, as for Boruto, it presents more drawbacks than benefits. Having the Jōgan and the Kāma seal, turned him into a LivingMacGuffin for Kara organization and the Ōtsutsuki renmants, as well putting those close to him in instant danger. He also risks to become a vessel for Ōtsutsuki which means that the more he uses the seal, Boruto's entire being will be rewritten as Momoshiki, until his personality and soul will be completely destroyed and replaced.
*** And even when [[spoiler:he manages to find a solution to this immediate problem, Kawaki decides to turn against him and kill him, because he can still sense Momoshiki is alive within Boruto, and regards killing every remnant of Otsutsuki to be necessary]]. And even then, his genetics are the main reason why [[spoiler: he is immune to Omnipotence, and thus suffered the consequences of Kawaki's wish the most]].
* SuperWristGadget: Boruto initially wields an experimental ninja tool that [[MagicFromTechnology allows him to cast]] [[BlowYouAway all]] [[PlayingWithFire five]] [[MakingASplash basic]] [[DishingOutDirt elemental]] [[ShockAndAwe ninjutsu]] without using his own chakra by [[PowersAsPrograms loading special scrolls]] with ninjutsu sealed inside them. [[spoiler:Naruto disapproves of such a device, and it gets Boruto disqualified from the Chunnin Exams as a result. Later, when Momoshiki attacks the stadium, all of Boruto's attacks with the device merely strengthen Momoshiki and seeing the trouble such a device brought into his life, Boruto discards it with disgust.]]
* SymbolMotifClothing: As a tot, he wore the symbol of the Hyuga clan on the front of his jacket, and while he was in the Academy, he wore a jacket with a bolt on the back, and finally when he became a genin, he wears a jacket with a spiral printed on it. He also wears a bolt as a necklace.
* TakeAThirdOption: Mitsuki observes and remarks that finding unconventional solutions and making options of his own is one of Boruto's talents. This especially stands out to him when Mitsuki's logic concludes that [[TheNeedsOfTheMany someone has to die in some situation]], and then Boruto goes and finds a way to save everyone.
* TeleportSpam: In the timeskip, Boruto has shown [[spoiler:that he has learned to use the Flying Thunder God Technique, though he states that he isn't as skilled as his grandfather]].
* TerribleArtist: He sometimes doodles in order to explain something. However, his skills as an artist stupefies everyone that sees it.
* ThouShaltNotKill: A firm believer in this. When [[spoiler:Sumire, the culprit behind the possessions]] threatens to destroy the entire Leaf Village, he refuses to allow Mitsuki to take the lethal route even though it would be the fastest way to resolve the issue. Also, with [[spoiler:Ao despite the fact that the latter was trying to kill him and his comrades]].
** That being said, there are people he too will not care for if killed. As shown when he had no qualms about killing Momoshiki; and [[spoiler: he is more than happy eliminating Code right on the spot if Boruto doesn't need him to locate the Ten Tails]].
* TookALevelInBadass: Boruto in the opening scene [[spoiler:now sports a cape similar to his father's, a scarred eye similar to Kakashi's, a katana similar to his master Sasuke and, a new doujutsu, obtained thanks to the heritage from his mother]]. fast foward to the timeskip, [[spoiler: when he returns to Konoha, and his fighting prowess is shown. While his peers had a hard time fighting off one or two of Code's minions, Boruto just cuts them down in droves. Also he can use a new Rasengan, called "Uzuhiko", where he can channel the chakra of the planet into an attack that will inflict damage through time to the target until he undoes it, or the Earth stops rotating. On top of that, he has also learned the Flying Thuunder God technique, becoming the third ninja who was ever able to use it on his own after his grandfather and the Second Hokage]].
* TookALevelInCynic: [[spoiler:The timeskip Boruto is more somber and ruthless unlike 3 years ago, he almost never smiles and is quick to threaten Code if he doesn't listen. He even considers dying in Konoha not a bad idea at all]]. Justified because [[spoiler:Boruto has spent the last 3 years framed as the murderer of his parents, all while because of Omnipotence most people do not even recognize him as the child of the Seventh Hokage, but rather only the stranger that was taken in, only to betray everyone. And because of this he was forced to flee from Konoha and his old life, with only Sasuke (and later Koji Kashin) as his ally. And in all of this, he would then get hunted down by Code]].
** At the same time, it is downplayed. [[spoiler:because Boruto was still shown smiling and being happy to see and talk again with his friends whenever possible in Two Blue Vortex, so it is clear that it's only in his general attitue and demaneur that he got more somber]].
* TookALevelInJerkass: He gets worse and worse each new day after his father's promotion to Hokage just prior to him entering the Academy. He improves by the time he graduates but steadily grows reckless and egoistic. It takes [[spoiler:his disqualification in the Chunin Exams and his father nearly dying at Momoshiki's hands to finally humble him]].
* TookALevelInKindness: [[spoiler:After being caught cheating, removed from the exams, and seeing his father nearly die, Boruto finally understood the meaning of being a shinobi and respects the title of Hokage and his father]].
* TouchOfDeath: He uses the Gentle Fist style of taijutsu.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: While his father's favorite food is ramen, Boruto's favorite food are hamburgers.
* {{Tsundere}}: He puts a tough guy act to hide his softer side, especially towards his father, but everyone knows he's a lovable MommasBoy with BigBrotherInstinct deep inside. It's practically lampshaded by the way he addresses Naruto. When he's happy, he calls him "tou-chan" ("dad" or "daddy"), a very affectionate term, but when he's angry with his father and feels neglected by him, he switches to "kuso oyaji" ("shitty old man"), a ''very'' rude and disrespectful term.
* UnderestimatingBadassery:
** Seeing his father being clumsy most of the time gave Boruto the impression that his father (or the Hokage title in general) isn't as strong as everyone claimed he is. When he finally sees his father in his Jinchūriki mode for the first time, Boruto is shocked to see how powerful Naruto really is.
** Even when against more experience opponents such as Kakashi, Boruto still thinks he had a chance against them.
** Becomes nearly fatal for his family against Delta, as her [[spoiler:Scientific Drone can pick up on invisible objects, nullifying the surprise of his Vanishing Rasengan. The result is Delta absorbing his jutsu for a quick recharge and launching a counterattack, nearly killing both his father and sister]].
* UsedToBeASweetKid: ''The Last'' has Boruto openly showing Naruto love and respect. Come ''Boruto: The Movie'', he's grown quite bratty and disrespectful towards his father. Things do get better after it though.
* VerbalTic: End his sentences with "dattebasa", like how Naruto and Kushina end theirs with "dattebayo" and "dattebane", respectively.
* WarriorPrince: He's the son of the Seventh Hokage and the Byakugan Princess, so close enough to a prince, and is training to be a ninja for the Warrior part.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: As shown by promotional material, in the timeskip [[spoiler: Boruto leaves his shirt open, showing off the mark he gained 3 years prior when resurrected by the Karma. It's a downplayed example, because the shirt is only half buttoned, and with the addition of the cloak he now wears, his chest isn't always visible]].
* WeakButSkilled: Downplayed example. Boruto is without a doubt a ChildProdigy, surpassing even his father at his age. However others have noted that no matter how talented he is, there will always be things he can never hope to do as well as him. One such example was when Kakashi didn't bother to teach him the Odama Rasengan was because unlike his father, he doesn't have his near unlimited chakra and therefore can't learn it; this notion however, turns out to be false, as Momoshiki ''did'' create a massive rasengan while possessing him, thus making this a case of UnskilledButStrong.
* WellDoneSonGuy: Boruto is the epitome of this trope in story. Having a great childhood with his family--''especially'' in comparison to [[DarkAndTroubledPast the hell that both Naruto and Hinata went through when they were his age]]--Boruto's life turns upside down when Naruto is appointed as Hokage. Losing his hero's attention and feeling distant to him, Boruto does everything to spend time with his father, even acting out just so he could be lectured by him. On the other hand, his accomplishments are overlooked due to being the son of Naruto, which makes him feel inadequate and insecure, even though he's a prodigy. During the Chunin Exams, when he receives a "Well Done" from his father for passing the test, ''he is moved to tears''. This desperation to keep his father's acknowledgement drives him to cheat. And it goes without saying, [[GoneHorriblyWrong everything ends in a fiasco]]. It's even lampshaded by the movie's theme song, "Diver", which revolves around Boruto's desire to be acknowledged by Naruto. However, it puts blame on both sides: the father treats his son like a child, while the son acts tough towards his father to hide his frustration and insecurity.
* WhatBeautifulEyes: Sarada is very impressed by Boruto's blue eyes, saying Boruto's eyes are even bluer than Naruto's.
* WhatTheHellHero:
** Boruto receives a lot of these in ''Boruto: Naruto the Movie'' for his selfishness and/or arrogance.
** Gets a subtle one from Shikadai and Inojin for cheating in their co-op videogame. Shikadai refuses to accept his "borrowed" stats because, unlike Boruto, he spent hours leveling up his character behind Temari's back.
** At the same time, he gets a violent one from Sarada and a non-violent but equally firm one from Mitsuki because his refusal to participate in the Chunin Exams bars both his team-mates from getting a promotion.
** Gets one from his father due to cheating in the Chunin Exams. Unlike the above, this one ''finally'' makes an impact because Naruto is deeply hurt by it, looking like ''he'' was the one caught cheating.
