!!Main Protagonists

----
* AFriendInNeed:
** Adrian's plans for a special birthday celebration for Sydney have fallen apart. At this point Rowena Clark and Cassie, his friends from college, respond by helping him "salvage" this day, preparing everything for a very special date.
** Adrian attends Carlton College as an art student. His last weeks in college pass in a drunken blur, he writes his final exam in mixed media without having studied, and he fails to submit a final project for his other two classes before moving back to Court. In effect dropping out of college and giving in to despair. Jill and Trey choose two of his paintings, left behind in his apartment, and submit them to Carlton in his name. Adrian passes his college semester and he is grateful when he sobers up.
%%* AllLoveIsUnrequited
* AmicableExes: Adrian and Rose, once he gets over her and falls in love with Sydney.
%% Doesn't explain what the reaction is. * BerserkButton: No one insults Sydney, his mother or his great-aunt Tatiana and gets away with it.
* BigBrotherInstinct: He acts as a protective big brother to Jill Mastrano. She is fifteen-years-old, and kind of timid. He is an adult, several years older than her, and takes an interest in her well-being.
%% * BlessedWithSuck: His spirit abilities.
* BrilliantButLazy: Though he eventually outgrows the laziness.
%% * ByronicHero: Has some elements of this.
%%* CrazyJealousGuy
* DaywalkingVampire: Like Jill, needs to get used to living on a human schedule in Palm Springs. It bothers him slightly, but not enough to stop him going to college - or sitting with Sydney in the sun.
* DeadpanSnarker: Is a walking example of this.
* DeadPersonConversation: In The Fiery Heart, it's revealed that he's started having conversations with the voice of his dead great-aunt, Tatiana Ivashkov.
%% * DoggedNiceGuy: To Sydney, while she's in denial.
* EccentricArtist: Even without the spirit-induced madness, he's a bit eccentric.
* HealingHands: Can heal any injury, even death.
* HiddenDepths: What attracts Sydney to him in the first place.
%% * IdleRich: Starts out as this, but outgrows it.
* ImHavingSoulPains: When he uses his spirit abilities too much.
%% * Keet
%% * LargeHam
%% * LazyArtist
%% * LikeBrotherAndSister: With Jill.
* LonelyRichKid: Before he befriended Lissa and Rose in Vampire Academy, he wasn't close to anyone, and after his breakup with Rose, Christian's aunt killing Adrian's aunt, and joining Jill in Palm Springs, he's largely lost access to that friendship group as well. It gets better.
* TheNicknamer: Sydney becomes Sage, Jill becomes Jailbait, Rose becomes Little Dhampir, Lissa becomes cousin, Eddie becomes Castile, and so on.
%% * NonActionGuy
%% * SadClown
* SecretKeeper: Becomes one for Sydney, keeping both the full details of her deal with Abe and her magic powers to himself. Well, himself and Jill, but he can't help that one.
%% * TalkingInYourDreams: Spirit powers.
%% * TallDarkAndSnarky
%% * TroubledButCute

An Alchemist and later who helps Rose find Dimitri's hometown, Baia, in Siberia. She later helps Rose . She gets a bigger part in the spinoff Literature/Bloodlines where she .
%%* 2PlusTorturesMakesFive
* ActionSurvivor: Carries over from Vampire Academy.
* AlwaysAccurateAttack: Sydney rarely uses a gun but has excellent aiming skills. This is largely because she mentally calculates the exact angle and distance she has to aim at.
* AmicableExes: Sydney and Brayden, the human boy she dates briefly in The Golden Lily.
* AttemptedRape: During her stay in Court in The Fiery Heart, a group of Moroi males led by Wesley Drozdov attempts to drug her and forcibly drink her blood (something which is the equivalent of date rape in the Moroi world). Both Adrian and Christian Ozera are furious when they find out about it, Christian going as far as vowing to hunt down the perpetrators and make them pay.
* BadassAdorable: She's an attractive young woman with powerful magic and can hold her own in a (magical) fight.
* BadassBookworm: Sydney is a powerful witch who loves learning and scholarly pursuits.
* BathsAreFun: Really enjoys her first bath in the hotel after coming out of re-education.
* BeingPersonalIsntProfessional: The mindset which was drilled into her by the Alchemists and her father. Part of the Alchemist beliefs is that all vampires are evil, and for an Alchemist to become friendly with any dhampirs or Moroi is tantamount to treason in the eyes of the Alchemist leaders. Already being in trouble for helping Rose escape from Court a month before the beginning of Bloodlines (and later helping her try to prove her innocence and locate Lissa's mystery half-sibling), Sydney tries to mantain a professional and impersonal attitude toward Eddie, Adrian and Jill as she goes about her business in Palm Springs, so as not to give the Alchemists any more fuel to recall her and send her to a re-education centre.
* BeautyBrainsAndBrawn: The brains to Jill's beauty and Angeline's brawn.
* BelatedLoveEpiphany: Sydney realises (or rather accepts) just as she's about to leave with Marcus Finch to permanently join a rebel Alchemist group that she's in love with Adrian and would rather stay with him in Palm Springs than run off with Marcus and the rebels.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Sydney is usually very nice and obliging by nature. However, if you hurt someone she cares about, she won't hesitate to hurt you back. This is seen when she humiliates Laurel (via chemically-contaminated shampoo/conditioner) into stopping her bullying of Jill, and also when she threatens to burn a group of Alchemists alive (though it is a bluff on her part) in order to make Sheridan release Adrian who was being held at gun-point.
%%* BigDamnHeroes
* BigSisterInstinct: Sydney is very protective of Zoe and determined to do anything to prevent her from being tattooed with the golden lily, knowing that once she is there is no turning back for her. Unfortunately most of her attempts to help her sister and met with anger on Zoe's part. While in Palm Springs Sydney develops a similar attitude toward Jill, largely because Jill reminds her of Zoe, and even goes as far as getting revenge on Jill's bully Laurel by contaminating her hair with a disgusting concoction of chemicals.
* BlindfoldedTrip: Sydney is blindfolded when driven to the headquarters of the Warriors of the Light (both times).
* Bookworm: She's a total nerd, loving to read and learn, especially about Ancient Greek and Roman Architecture. One of her biggest dreams (which her father stopped) was to go to college and earn a degree.
* Brainwashing: What the Alchemists attempt to do to her in re-education. It doesn't work, but it does leave some scars which take a while to fade.
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: The gentle girl to Adrian's brooding boy. Even Duncan lampshades this, saying that all Alchemist girls fall in love with Moroi men who are brooding.
* BullyHunter: After Laurel accuses the innocent Jill of dealing out alcohol in the dorms (and even going to Mrs Weathers with "proof") and gets her cronies to vandalise Jill's dorm room, Sydney gets back at her by ruining her hair with a concoction of chemicals.
* CannotDream: During her three months in solitary confinement, Sydney is kept in a periodically drugged state as a form of psychological torture in which she can never be truly refreshed, to make her more susceptible to whatever mind-games the Alchemists throw at her. This means that she can't dream (and thus Adrian can't contact her in a dream). Later, after coming out of solitary, Sydney finds that the detainees are all drugged into sleep when it's bedtime in the re-education centre, something which poses a problem since she's trying to communicate with Adrian via a spirit dream. She eventually manages to turn off the system that is filtering the drug into the sleeping rooms, allowing Adrian to finally contact her.
* CerebusRetcon: Sydney's habit of playing with her food but not eating it, which Rose dismissed as a weird quirk in the VA series, is covered in more depth this time around. It's revealed that it's the result of a serious eating disorder caused by her father's constant judgments about her weight and appearance compared to that of the Moroi. Adrian is the only one who notices Sydney's eating habits for what they are and calls her out on them, telling her that she'll never have the body which Jill has and that she could stand to gain a few pounds as she is practically underweight.
* CitizenshipMarriage: Following the escape from the Re-education facility, both Sydney and Adrian are in the Alchemists' "most wanted" list. Adrian is protected by his status as a subject of the Moroi Court, but there is no such protection for Sydney. The two lovers marry in hopes of convincing Lissa to accept Sydney as a new subject. It works.
* ColdBloodedTorture: Is tortured by Sheridan (both physically and psychologically) multiple times in the re-education center, something which stays with her a long time after her escape.
* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: Sydney is quite different from Rose. Rose wasn't particularly intellectual or bookist, while Sydney is. Rose also had no magic, while Sydney finds herself dealing with magical abilities she didn't know she could have.
* CuteBookworm: She's an attractive young woman who loves learning and is very bookish.
* CuteWitch: Sydney is an attractive witch.
* DaddysGirl: Downplayed. In the beginning of Bloodlines Sydney is shown to wish for her father's approval, but never expects any and doesn't bother doing anything just to impress him. By the end of the series their relationship has broken so completely that she doesn't care at all what he thinks about her or her actions.
* DatingWhatDaddyHates: Sydney ends up falling in love with Moroi Adrian Ivashkov, something which goes against the beliefs of both of their races. Sydney's father Jared Sage is not happy when he hears about it, and is even more furious when he discovers that she's married him (Adrian).
* DefrostingIceQueen: She was introduced in Blood Promise as being unable to spend a night in the same as Rose because of her fear and distrust of Moroi and dhampirs. She defrosts towards Rose and Dimitri in Vampire Academy, but has to do the same with Adrian, Jill and the others through Bloodlines, and ends up defrosting far more around them than she did Rose and Dimitri.
* Determinator: In the latter half of the series, she definitely becomes this. During her captivity in Silver Shadows she never gives up hope that Adrian will come for her and never gives up trying to escape from the facility she's trapped in and helping the allies she's made among the other detainees. Later she persistently strives to find a way for her and Adrian to make a life together without the Alchemists hunting them down.
* DoesntLikeGuns: Sydney has a healthy wariness for guns, for as she points out, guns can only injure and kill. She has to let go of this, however, when comes after her in The Indigo Spell, so that she has something other than spells to protect herself with.
* TheDriver: In Palm Springs one of Sydney's main jobs is to drive Jill and Eddie to feedings at Clarence's. She also has to drive Jill to modelling sessions at Lia DiStefani's shop in Bloodlines.
* GoodWitch: Sydney is a powerful witch who uses her magic to help others in trouble.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: Though a good person at heart and very loyal to the Alchemists (at least at first), Sydney's adventure with Rose and Dimitri has gotten her in trouble with her superiors. By the beginning of Bloodlines she's still not fully trusted again and it's made clear that if she makes another huge mistake it's likely that she'll be sent to a re-education facility.
* NiceGirl: Is generally this, though she can be tough and unfeeling when circumstances require it.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: During her battle with Alicia in Ms Terwilliger's house, Sydney accidentally sets it on fire while flinging fireballs. Jackie doesn't hold it against her.
* OnlySaneMan: At times amongst the Palm Springs crew.
* SecretKeeper: She is the only one Carly tells about her DateRape, and is sworn to secrecy about it.
%%* SecondLove: To Adrian.
* StarCrossedLovers: She and Adrian, because of the difference in their race and the fact that it's considered a taboo for a human and a Moroi to have a relationship together. Through many obstacles, though, they do manage to earn a happy ending and live a life together.
* TeamMom: Is effectively this for their group in Palm Springs. In the very beginning Jill, Eddie and Adrian rely on her too much to clean up their messes and take them to Clarence's and on errands, and forget that they should be picking up a lot of the slack as well. It takes a hard talking-too from Sydney for them to realise that they aren't doing their part as well as they should. They eventually grow out of this as the series progresses, though.
* TheSmartGuy: Very intelligent, and uses it to get herself out of sticky situations.
* TookALevelInBadass: Upgraded at the end of Silver Shadows, when she uses her magic to conjure fire and threaten Sheridan and the Alchemists into letting her and Adrian go into the helicopter.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Hurt Adrian and you will regret it.
* WhatTheHellHero: Gives quite a number of these over the course of the series, especially in the beginning.
** First, she yells at Adrian when she's forced to drive to Los Angeles to pick him up in the middle of the night, berating him for exposing Jill via the bond to his sex life.
** She snaps at Eddie and Jill for not being serious enough about their mission and for relying on her too much to clean up their own messes. This is straight after Jill returns from her unauthorised date with Lee, which Sydney also scolds her about.
** In The Golden Lily she tells Angeline off after she gets in trouble with the school for punching a member of a visiting band who was assaulting her (though this is mainly because Angeline doesn't seem to be taking it seriously enough). At the same time she berates her for moving in on Eddie in a way that's making Eddie uncomfortable and tells her to stop.

!!Moroi

* AccidentalTruth: In Bloodlines, her bully Laurel calls her 'vamp girl' because her pale skin makes her look like a stereotypical vampire (at least to humans). Though Laurel never discovers the truth, she accidentally hits the nail on the head when she calls Jill 'vamp girl', because Jill is a vampire, though not of the undead variety.
* ActionSurvivor: She's a princess (and one of the last of her family) who is sent into hiding to protect her from dissidents who want to kill her to end Lissa's rule. Jill has to adapt to living in a hot and dry environment and among humans, while at the same time fighting against the occasional Strigoi that crop up.
** ActionGirl: She certainly wants to be one, but as a princess in hiding, there aren't a lot of opportunities to train in self-defence.
* AmicableExes: Becomes this with Micah after they break up in The Golden Lily.
* AnIcePerson: Jill can use her water magic to create ice. She does this once in Bloodlines to get back at her bully Laurel, by freezing the water in Laurel's shower.
* BackFromTheDead: She was killed during an assassination attempt at Court a week before the events of the first book. Adrian managed to bring her back from the dead before anyone noticed, forging a spirit-bond between them.
* BadassAdorable: Is very beautiful (though she doesn't realise it in the beginning). She's also a water-user who uses her magic to fight against enemies, mainly Strigoi.
* BeautifulAllAlong: As a Moroi, Jill is naturally tall, slender and attractive; basically supermodel material. However, because this is the norm for Moroi, they consider curves and a substantial physique to be ideal. Thus, as the lone Moroi in a school full of humans, Jill considers herself to be one of the least attractive girls in school. It's only once she starts modelling that she gains confidence in her own appearance.
* BeautyBrainsAndBrawn: The beauty to Sydney's brains and Angeline's brawn.
* BigDamnHeroes: Pulls it off a few times, most notably in Bloodlines, when she and Eddie rescue Sydney and Adrian from Strigoi, and in The Fiery Heart, when she rescues Eddie from another Strigoi with her water magic.
* DamselInDistress: At the end of Silver Shadows she is abducted by Alicia DeGraw and held captive in a Warriors of Light facility. It takes the Palm Springs gang (and those at Court) a whole month to locate and rescue her.
* DaywalkingVampire: She has to get used to living on a human schedule while in Palm Springs, and this largely means that she is out and about during the day (at time when most other Moroi would be asleep).
* HiddenBackupPrince: She was this growing up, and is now back to hiding her identity.
* MakingASplash: Jill is a water-user.
* NiceGirl: Is one of the nicest characters in either series.
* OfficialCouple: Becomes one with Eddie at the end of the series.
* PastExperienceNightmare: Has nightmares about her death for a while after coming to Palm Springs which often result in her waking up screaming and crying. These fade as the series progresses.
* PoliticallyActivePrincess: Plans on being this. She has strong opinions on Moroi politics, but until she turns eighteen and it is safe for her to return to Court, there isn't much she can do.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Insists on being this, much to Eddie's despair.
* SecretKeeper: the first, and for a long time only, person to know about Sydney and Adrian's relationship.
* SeeingThroughAnothersEyes: Because of her bond with Adrian she has the ability to see and experience everything Adrian experiences. This doesn't always go down well though, especially in the first few novels, given Adrian's habit of drinking, smoking and womanizing.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She's interested in Eddie for his humour, dedication and loyalty. The other guys she shows interest in throughout Bloodlines are Micah, who is also funny and kind; Neil, dedicated and loyal; and Lee, who admittedly was AffablyEvil but certainly seemed personable and nice to begin with.
* UnrequitedLoveSwitcheroo: She starts to fall for Eddie just as he gives up on his crush for her and starts to date Angeline.
* UptownGirl: To Eddie. She's a princess, he's a disgraced guardian. Somewhat subverted, in that she was raised as a commoner and is still adjusting to being a princess, and spends most of the series in hiding, with no one other than the Melrose family knowing about her royal blood.
* WarriorPrincess: She's the crown princess of the ruling family, and is able on many occasions to utilise her water magic to help win a fight against Strigoi or other enemies.

* ChekhovsGunman: His theories on vampire hunters and the guy who told him about them both turn out to be very important.
* Cloudcuckoolander: Has many strange theories about the Moroi world.
* ConspiracyTheorist: Believes that the Moroi government is hiding the existence of vampire hunters.

* AffablyEvil: genuinely regrets having to attack Sydney.
* RedemptionRejection: He had his soul restored by a spirit user, but he wants to become a Strigoi again and will kill people in his attempt.
* SerialKiller: Repeatedly murders people of all species - usually women, but he indicates he's willing to make exceptions - in an attempt to become a Strigoi again.
* VampireVannabe: Kind of. He already is a vampire, a Moroi, but he wants to become another kind, Strigoi.
* WalkingSpoiler: All the above tropes? Revealed in the last few chapters of Bloodlines.

A Moroi spirit-user, who is first introduced in The Fiery Heart. She brings her sister Olive out of her Strigoi state.
* BigSisterInstinct: Cares deeply about her younger sister, especially after bringing her back from her Strigoi state. She is devastated when Olive leaves Court without telling her and puts all of her spirit-magic into finding her.
* Determinator: She will do anything to help her sister. Unfortunately, this leads to...
* SanitySlippage: After Olive's disappearance Nina throws all of her spirit into finding her through dream-walking, and eventually this takes its toll on her. After her and Adrian's final attempt to contact Olive in a dream she completely loses it and slips into a coma. Though Sonya and Adrian hold out hope for her recovery, it's revealed in the epilogue of The Ruby Circle that she never did.

Adrian's father.
* AbusiveParents: emotionally abusive to Adrian.
* AristocratsAreEvil
* BlueBlood: Member of the Ivashkov Clan, a royal family and former ruling Clan.

Adrian's mother, who has been serving time in prison for interfering with a police investigation.
* BlueBlood: Born a Taurus, and married into the Ivashkovs, both royal families.
* MamaBear: Spends most of the series in prison because she interfered with an active investigation to ensure Adrian wasn't implicated.
* ProperLady

!!Dhampirs

A dhampir guardian assigned to protect Jill in Palm Springs.
%% * Bodyguard Crush: to Jill.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: has blond hair and is a genuinely good guy.
* ILetGwenStacyDie: He is still haunted by his best friend, Mason's, death.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: His reasoning behind not admitting his love for Jill and instead letting her date Micah.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: With Sydney by the end of the series. Pretending to be twins helped.
%% * NiceGuy
* TheBigGuy: As a trained guardian, he is easily the most physically capable member of the group, and puts it to use when rescuing the others from Strigoi.
%% * The Stoic: When in Guardian mode.
* UnrequitedLoveSwitcheroo: He truly gives up on his crush and starts dating Angeline - just as Jill starts to notice him as something other than her guardian.

A female dhampir who grew up among the Keepers, and who becomes a guardian to Jill Mastrano during her stay in Palm Springs.
* BadassAdorable: She is very cute in her own way, and she's a dhampir who can kick some major ass when she needs to.
* BeautyBrainsAndBrawn: The Brawn to Jill's Beauty and Sydney's Brains.
* CuteBruiser: Angeline is very attractive and quite innocent-looking and small. It can be hard to believe she's a dhampir warrior who's job it is to guard Jill in Palm Springs.
* TheBigGuy: Getting there. While she's not as good as Eddie or Neil, she's training as a guardian and is better at physical combat than most of the cast.
* UnrequitedLove: She is initially in love with Eddie, who is in love with Jill. This doesn't last long, however, as Eddie gives up on finding love with Jill (as he thinks it's impossible and Jill doesn't even return his affection) and decides to date her.
%%* UnrequitedLoveSwitcheroo

A dhampir turned Strigoi who was brought out of her Strigoi state by her Moroi sister. She is first introduced in The Fiery Heart, and is revealed to be in a relationship with Neil Raymond.
* BackFromTheDead: She was brought back from her Strigoi state by her spirit-using sister Nina.
* DeathByChildbirth: She dies giving birth to Declan, after trying to escape through the woods.
* HeroicSacrifice: She dies trying to protect Declan from the authorities.
* MamaBear: She is willing to do anything to protect her baby from the Moroi and Alchemist authorities, going as far as running into the woods during a Strigoi attack while in labor.

A dhampir guardian who protects Jill Mastrano during her stay in Palm Springs. He is in a relationship with Olive Sinclair.
* BodyguardCrush: Both Jill and Angeline develop a crush on him which he is largely unaware of.
* DaddyHadAGoodReasonForAbandoningYou: To keep his son from being experimented on.
* HeroicSacrifice: He gives up his chance at raising Declan in order to protect him from being discovered by the Moroi and Alchemist authorities who'd want to study and experiment on him.
* LoveAtFirstSight: Neil is attracted to Olive from the moment he meets her.
* WalkingTheEarth: His fate.

!! Alchemists

The Alchemist leader Sydney reports to most often. She is overall very reasonable and at heart a good person, though rigid in her belief that Moroi and dhampirs are as evil and unnatural as Strigoi.
%%* BlackBossLady
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: by far, the most reasonable Alchemist in the series.

Sydney's abusive father. He is a high-up Alchemist leader who expects Sydney to follow in his footsteps.
* AbusiveDad: He is a control freak who is verbally abusive toward his daughters.
* Jerkass: He's introduced by scaring Sydney awake, and never apologizing. It doesn't improve from there.

* AssholeVictim
* TheAtoner: Wants to be one after re-education.
* Brainwashed: Following Re-education.
* BreakTheHaughty: Re-education, again.
%%* ConsummateLiar
* DateRape: The circumstances under which he raped Carly Sage.
* Jerkass: A rapist, tries to sabotage Sydney at every turn, steals blood from a defenceless old man, and calls his victim a whore.

Sydney's younger sister.
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: in The Fiery Heart, primarily because she makes it difficult for Sydney to interact with her friends and Adrian as she usually would.
* TheAtoner: Sees Sydney but lets her go in Ruby Circle, despite the Alchemists searching for her, because Zoe had discovered that Sydney was tortured in re-education.
* DaddysGirl: She longs to follow in her father's footsteps in the hopes that it will gain his approval and love.
* ETuBrute: She betrays her sister Sydney.
%% * Internal Reformist: to the Alchemists.
* SiblingRivalry: Jared Sage drives one between her and Sydney.
* SuccessfulSiblingSyndrome: Feels this way about Sydney.
* TokenGoodTeammate: To the Alchemists by the end of Ruby Circle.
* WellDoneSonGuy: Desperately wants her father's approval.

A rebel Alchemist who Sydney befriends and eventually works with against the corrupt Alchemist leaders.
* CrazyPrepared: As he says, "I'm Marcus Finch. Of course I have a getaway car."
* DefectorFromDecadence: defected from the Alchemists.

!! Non-Alchemist Humans

Sydney's older sister.
* BigSisterInstinct: She cares deeply about both of her younger sisters.
* DateRape: The circumstances under which Keith Darnell raped her.
* ItsAllMyFault: Blamed herself for a long time for being raped (as Keith had led her to believe that it was her fault), when in actuality it was not her fault at all.
* NiceGirl: She is a kind and gentle person at heart, totally unsuited for an Alchemist way of life. However, watch out if you hurt her or anyone she cares about; she's not likely to forgive and forget in a hurry.
* RapeAsBackstory: She was raped by Keith Darnell years ago when they were dating each other. She was too scared to tell anyone, as she was afraid that it was her fault and that everyone else would think so too. The only person she told was Sydney, and she swore her to secrecy.
