[[caption-width-right:350:Astral's Humanized Monomi Who Appears To Look Like A Space Rabbit]]

'''Usami''', the self-dubbed Base Manager in Astral Moon Base & Academia, is a Humanoid Rabbit that has one true goal and purpose in mind: To keep her group of 'students' safe and happy-- Hell, not only that, but also ''wants to keep them locked up forever''. Though with no bad intentions, all this little bunny girl wants is for everybody to get along; which we all know will somehow go horribly wrong.

In chapter 5, Monobear kills Monomi by punching his fist through her robotic chest and tearing out some wires, causing her to scream and presumably shut off for good. However, in chapter 8, Yasu uses his mechanical engineering SHSL talent to fix the hole in Monomi's chest, and Jaz uses her electronic engineering SHSL talent to reprogram Monomi back to life.
----
* BabyTalk: She replaces most of her 'R's with 'W's.
* BreakTheCutie:
** After Monokuma had appeared, she was held by her collar, pushed to the ground and kicked only to be found out with the sound of machine wreckage and 'CLUNK!'-ing that she was an android-like robot of intelligence. Though she had tried to retaliate, it was of no use, and she ended up being dragged away by Monokuma, who was also revealed to be an android.
** Literally in chapter five, when Monokuma punches through her chest and rips out some wiring.
* BrutalHonesty: She had admitted from day one that nobody was allowed to leave until her "mission objectives" were complete. Even after so, she hadn't guaranteed the offer to go elsewhere. This was later backed up when she hadn't denied the fact when Monokuma had stated "Monomi strictly said none of you were allowed to leave until her ‘mission objectives’ were complete. [...] Even if you had managed to complete objectives, you wouldn’t be able to leave!".
* BunniesForCuteness: Her similarity to a bunny is also a striking resemblance to a Moon Rabbit.
%%* ElmuhFuddSyndwome
* KilledOffForReal: Seems that way in chapter five, after Monokuma punches through her chest and rips out some wiring. But then turns out to be NotQuiteDead, as she's broken but in a repairable state. She's fixed in chapter eight by Yasu and Jaz, when the former receives some wires from the monomachine.
* MagicalGirl: Introduces herself as 'Magical Girl Miwacle ☆ Usami', complete with wand.
* MeaningfulRename: She is re-titled "Monomi" after Monokuma kicks her down and beats her up, 're-programming her' and changing her attire.
* NotHelpingYourCase: Though she claims to be on the student's side, she doesn't exactly want to help them get out of the situation they're in, either. She also refused on multiple occasions to answer certain student's questions about the place where they've been confined.
* PinkMeansFeminine: As shown by her attire.
* TookALevelInBadass: After the execution of the mastermind, Monomi proceeds to give Monokuma a TheReasonYouSuckSpeech before ''ripping the other robot to pieces''.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: When asked if the whole setup is a sick joke, Monomi explains that Hope's Peak "didn't exist anymore" and that they would have to live the rest of their lives in outer space.

!!Monokuma

[[caption-width-right:209:Astral's Humanized Monokuma Who Appears To Look Like A Space Pirate]]

'''Monokuma''', the self-dubbed Mission Director in Astral Moon Base & Academia, is a Humanoid Bear that lives and works towards one single goal: Striking despair and destruction into each and every person's lives he comes across. As expected, he comes in after things start to get settled within the group of student's new lives, imposing a '''mutual killing game''', deeming that living a normal, relaxed life ''"just isn't fun"''.
----
%%* BearsAreBadNews: When were they ever a good thing?
%%* BreakThemByTalking: Proven in his introduction speech, announcement speech, and pre/post trial monologue.
* CruelMercy: On several occasions, some of the students have either offered themselves up to the motive or have asked to be voted for and executed. Usually he refuses, either because he finds a request annoying or just because it would bring more despair to punish someone not so willing.
* DiscOneFinalBoss: He appears to be the victim, but when he says ''"Just imagine next time when I introduce the mastermind votes, how shellshocked you all will be! Never thinking there’s a traitor among you, and then—"'', the students start to receive the hint that there's something up.
%%* EvilHasABadSenseOfHumor:
* EvilLaugh: He has the same laugh as the original Monokuma of the ''Franchise/{{Danganronpa}}'' franchise; that being 'Upupu'.
* ExactWords: Everything he says is in full and he refuses to go back on his word.
%%* HangingJudge
* KillerTeddyBear: He was the one who had initiated the game of Mutual Killing. ''Fun Fact:'' He had first proposed the idea almost playfully and jokingly by saying ''"If there were two guys on the moon and one killed the other with a rock, would that be fucked up or what?"'', a famous internet meme.
* OutOfCharacterMoment: He will not usually tell classmates if they're about to vote for the wrong person as the culprit, so it really says something when Ginji falsely confesses to two murders in a row, and Monokuma gets so annoyed at Ginji that he ''personally confirms'' that Ginji is not the culprit and forbids the class from voting for Ginji.
%%* RulesLawyer
%%* SadisticChoice
* TookALevelInJerkass:
** If not apparent already by his blunt, rude, and forcible nature, he went as far as to call Shinju a cripple and denounce Hirashi when he tried to retaliate to Monokuma's unfair treatment.
** He takes another level in jerkass, to put it mildly, in chapter 5 when he kills Monomi.
* WillNotTellALie: Everything he says is of complete truth. 100%.

!!Aimé Archambault
!!!SHSL Pâtissier
[[quoteright:233:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aim_archambault_3260.png]]

Aimé is world famous in the culinary circle for his inventive and perfectionist baking. After providing pastries for his parents’ patisserie he slowly rose in popularity, become renowned in Paris, France and finally the whole of Europe as a prodigy for his generation. He decided to apply to Hope’s Peak in order to completely perfect his abilities before training as a professional pâtissier. Aimé dedicates his life to baking and hopes that he can one day popularize his creations for the whole world to enjoy. Perhaps he’s a little too obsessed with baking, though. He practically lives in the kitchen.

Survives to endgame.

%%* AlliterativeName
%% Quotes are not context. * BerserkButton:
%% ** To quote from chapter 2's trial:
%% --->"WHO USED CYANIDE IN MY— Z-ZA KITCHEN?!"
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He usually believes in giving people second chances, but in chapter 4, Miwa's murderer chose such a horrible way to kill her that Aimé believes the murderer is out of their mind, and should probably be put out of their misery.
* BilingualBonus: In chapter 4's trial, as part of a handwriting test to prove he didn't write the note that lured Miwa to be murdered, he writes, "Enchanté, je m'appelle Aimé" in both French and Japanese. It means, "Nice to meet you, my name is Aimé."
* ChildProdigy: Became known all over Europe as a prodigy for his generation thanks to his pastries.
%%* EveryoneLooksSexierIfFrench
%%* EverythingSoundsSexierInFrench
* GoodParents: Aimé's parents are good parents; his mother taught him how to bake and cook and his father supported him in every decision.
* INeedToGoIronMyDog: In chapter 4, Aimé tries to investigate Hirashi's room to find out more about him, but finds to his surprise that Hirashi is still there. Trying to choose between saying "I wanted to see if the door was locked" or "Let's be friends", Aimé blurts out "Let's be doors."
* NoSell: Upon learning that the chapter 5 motive is a threat to start torturing students to death one by one unless a murder occurs, Aimé decides that he's perfectly willing to go through with it if it comes to that, he still won't kill anyone. In fact, the threat of torture reminds Aimé of a previous execution, and if that culprit could go through with the execution, Aimé can go through with being tortured.
%%* ThePerfectionist
%%* PinkGirlBlueBoy: Aimé wears predominantly blue clothing.
* RealMenCook: And, in Aimé's opinion, everything else "feminine", given Aimé's justified distaste for gender roles.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: Minor example in chapter 6, but since Akemi is murdered right after she and Aimé talked about escape and seeing home again, it feels almost as though nothing they discussed was worth it, so Aimé decides he thinks he won't be investigating this time.
* SupremeChef: A specialized version of this trope; his SHSL talent is Pâtissier, so he's a supremely good chef when it comes to pastries.
* TenderTears: After chapter 2's trial goes horribly wrong, Aimé quietly starts crying on behalf of the wrongfully-executed classmate.
* WearingAFlagOnYourHead: Very subtly done, but his apron matches the colors of the French flag.

!!Akemi Sekai
!!!SHSL Ripperologist
[[quoteright:224:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akemi_9062.png]]

Akemi grew up in Chuo-ku, Osaka, surrounded by lots of food, tourists, and the big city. Her mother is a cold case detective, and from a very young age Akemi became interested in the mystery and intrigue of those unsolved enigmas of history. Her mom taught her how to look for evidence no matter how long the crime scene has been gone for, and her newfound analytical skills soon became focused onto a topic she learned about as a kid in school: Jack the Ripper. She began to devote her skills to studying, theorizing, and attempting to solve the old infamous Victorian serial murder case. She's a happy-go-lucky kind of girl who doesn't exactly understand that not everyone understands her talent, and that not everyone actually cares.

Akemi herself is inadvertently chapter two's killer; after encountering Valentina in the kitchen and attempting to stop her from committing suicide, the two end up working together to attempt to ensure that only one person had to die, which didn't happen. Akemi is the chapter 6 murder victim, found in a locker having died of exsanguination from a stomach wound inflicted by Nikki.
----
* BodyInABreadbox: Her body is found inside one of the lockers.
* ClosetGeek: Akemi's a big dork, and she loves morbid anime and video games and other stuff... but she wants to at least try to seem like her talent is serious business.
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: Akemi once revealed to Jaz that her father died when she was two years old.
* {{Fanservice}}:
** Not only does she take off her clothes during the chapter 1 strip trial in an attempt to find an injured culprit, but she's the one who ''suggests'' stripping in the first place.
** The "pool party" that was held in chapter 2 was Akemi's idea, and even in chapter 1's trial, Akemi briefly muses at one point that sometimes she forgets other people are more private about their bodies than she is.
%%* FunPersonified
* IDidntMeanToKillHim: A variation. In chapter two Akemi ''truly'' did not believe that she was Valentina's killer, as both her and Tina were sure that, with Akemi's help, Tina's death would count as suicide and only one innocent would be lost to the motive. That turned out to not be the case, as the mistrial showed.
* ImportantHairAccessory: Almost always wears her hat.
* InnocentBlueEyes: The "innocent" part is subverted in Chapter 2, when it's revealed that Akemi was the (albeit accidental and unknowing) killer.
* KarmaHoudini: Subverted. Akemi is technically ruled as the chapter 2 murderer because she assisted Valentina's suicide by dealing the "final blow", but the class doesn't vote for Akemi, causing a mistrial and thus an innocent to be executed. However, Akemi later becomes a murder victim herself in chapter 6.
%%* TheKillerBecomesTheKilled
%%* MiniDressOfPower
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Akemi assists Valentina in killing herself, but that meant Akemi dealt the "final blow" and thus is technically Valentina's killer...but Akemi keeps all this a secret during the trial, causing the class to mistrial. Then Monobear decides to execute a random innocent, so Akemi is (indirectly) responsible for the death of an innocent classmate even though Akemi thought Valentina's death would be ruled a suicide and thus ''prevent'' an execution.
* NoodleIncident: There's a little slip of paper under Akemi's bed that reads, "Don’t forget- September 25th!". It is unclear at this time what this means. Recently her player has confirmed that it's actually her journal password, "925". Her author states that the note is old, and in reference to the premier date of the anime for the manga the paper was closed in, ''Literature/StrawberryPanic''.
* OfficialCouple:
** With Jaz as of chapter 3. However, this is unfortunately interrupted in chapter 6, as Akemi is that chapter's murder victim.
** If you investigate the desk in Akemi's dorm, you find a photo of Akemi holding another girl very closely. There's a message on the back of the photo from "Hazuki"; the narration in the post notes that she may have been Akemi's girlfriend before. According to the mun, "Hazuki" is her SHSL Haiku Poetess, Hazuki Harudori, with whom Akemi shared a relationship until shortly before entering Hope's Peak.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe:
** Begs Jaz to not die yet after she volunteers to be executed in chapter two's trial. Fortunately for Akemi, Jaz doesn't die, because Monobear chooses to execute someone else entirely. Cruelly and ironically twisted in Chapter 6 when Akemi is the one who leaves via her own murder.
** As an extension to this, Akemi's stated that she has "never been the one who leaves" to reassure Jaz that she would stay with her, alluding to the fact that all of her previous relationships were broken off by her partner. Combined with the above, it's quite the cruel twist.
* ThePromise: After the reveal of the chapter two motive, Akemi promises Jaz that no one is going to die. Not only is this promise broken, but the killer turns out to be ''Akemi herself''.
* ShoutOut:
** During chapter 3's trial, Akemi channels Makoto Naegi from ''VisualNovel/DanganronpaTriggerHappyHavoc'' by saying, "You've got that wrong!" to Miwa.
** In Akemi's dorm, there's a plushie of [[Music/{{Vocaloid}} Rin Kagamine]], though the plush's name isn't mentioned on the blog. Akemi also has figurines of Rin and [[Anime/PuellaMagimadokaMagica Homura]].
* SignatureHeadgear: Akemi almost always wears a blue hat with a skull on it, befitting her talent as an SHSL Ripperologist.
* SkewedPriorities: Constantly. For example, the first thing she does after being introduced to the moon base is ask to pet Usami's ears, after the first motive she decides to make food instead, and after the first execution she only briefly feels upset before deciding to throw a huge pool party. Also, she decided that instead of immediately revealing her involvement with Valentina's death, she put priority on trying to lead her friends to the right conclusion without actually saying what happened (which she failed at).
* StockUnsolvedMysteries: Her talent, Ripperology, involved her attempting to actually solve the case herself.
%%* ThatOneCase: In Akemi's circumstance, the only case.
* TomatoInTheMirror: Due to her body being moved from the crime scene, Akemi fails to realize she's dead (and why she's having such a hard time touching things) until she sees the body announcement for her own murder.
* TookALevelInBadass:
** Akemi comes up with a plan in chapter 4's trial that exposes the true culprit; she compares everyone's handwriting to the fake note that lured Miwa to her death, and only Lukas' handwriting matches.
** In the chapter 5's trial, Akemi produces one of the two clues that, taken together, prove who the culprit is. Akemi notices during chapter 5's trial that Toru has been covering his shoulder with his ID tag for some reason, and asks Toru to strip, revealing that he has a bullet wound in his shoulder that only the murderer could have received, since Ginji got off a shot at the murderer before dying.
* WingdingEyes: She has little plus-sign/cross type symbols in her eyes.

!!Ryuzaburo 'Akuma' Shinozuka
!!!SHSL Demonologist
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tvtropesakuma_2034.png]]

He originally started out as the son of a prominent priest. At a young age he always had an interest in biblical studies, so his parents let him work as an intern for an up and coming biblical research group. However, at the time his parents didn’t realize exactly what this group was getting into. The group was working on a project of analyzing the Key of Solomon, a book depicting dozens of different demons, their purposes, and how to ward them off or summon them if ever needed. He became so infatuated with the idea of these demons and having all this information at his disposal. He quickly found himself becoming obsessed and memorized everything and anything the Key of Solomon could give him.

Within a year he had abandoned the church and taken over the research group as his own. Their research expanded further and further into the field of Demonology. He was quickly dubbed with the name ‘Akuma’ by his followers. He even claims that he can serve as a gateway for the demons to enter our world, by letting him possess his body. But nobody is sure whether or not he’s just putting on an act, or if he’s serious. Either way, he is really intense about demons.

Survives to endgame.
----
* AbusiveParents: In Akuma's own words, as he unintentionally lets slip his own past after chapter 3's execution:
-->"Families aren’t there to help you… they’re there to chain you down… to force you down the same path as them… and if you dare defy, they’ll beat you without regards to their own morals. Th-that’s all family is. We’re all better off without them, so we can grow and blossom on our own…"
* AndThereWasMuchRejoicing:
** Akuma personally views it as a ''good'' thing that Monobear kills Monomi in chapter 5.
** He does this again when Ginji and Nakunaru, both of whom Akuma disliked, end up as chapter 5's murder victims.
** This trope is subverted in Akemi's case. When it was revealed that chapter 2's trial was a mistrial because Akemi was keeping secrets, Akuma said Akemi deserved to die for it at the time. However, by the time Akemi actually ''does'' die in chapter 6, Akuma isn't rejoicing because by then he's come to regret being so mad at her.
** Again subverted in chapter eight, when Akuma is actually upset over Yasu's death- the first person he'd had a normal conversation with, and considered a friend.
* AscendedFanboy: Originally he was an intern for a biblical research group, but upon discovering what the group was researching, he became infatuated with the idea of having demons and related knowledge at his disposal, and so he developed his talents to the point where he took over the research group and gained followers of his own, and thus became a SHSL Demonologist.
* CharacterDevelopment: Akuma begins the game in agreement with Monobear's ideals, since in Akuma's opinion, Monobear's mutual killing game is necessary to weed out the selfish people who can be pushed into murders. Then after Monobear provides a series of motives that are simply threats to kill ''everyone'', innocent and guilty alike, Akuma turns against Monobear in chapter 6 since Akuma realizes that Monobear doesn't care about justice, Monobear just wants to take as many lives as possible.
* EvenEvilHasStandards:
** Invoked. After the first culprit is revealed:
--->'''Akuma:''' Boo fucking hoo. You killed someone, so you deserve to die. That’s as simple as it gets. Hell, I know everyone here dislikes me, but I’m not as awful as disgusting scum like you.
** This continues to be a theme as of chapter 2: Monokuma threatens to execute two innocents as the chapter 2 "motive" unless someone commits murder. When someone finally does, Akuma's actually relieved, because this way Monokuma will have to kill another murderer and not an innocent, and thus avoid becoming as "gross" and "selfish" as Heather was.
* HowDareYouDieOnMe: A variation; he calls the dead Yasu out on dying after everything Jaz has been through.
-> '''Akuma''': Miss Jaz and you were also starting to become friends too, right? Don’t know what she’s been through the last few weeks? And you still have the nerve to die with a smile on your face?
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: An intentional example. Akuma is definitely not shy about letting his classmates know the ways he thinks they suck. Also, on his Relationships page on his personal blog, a lot of his descriptions of his classmates are insults, such as calling Masayoshi an idiot or calling Monomi annoying. The "heart of gold" part is that he absolutely ''cannot stand'' anyone hurting or killing an innocent person, and for that reason he does his very best in each trial to bring the culprits to justice.
* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane: It's left open to interpretation whether Akuma is actually being possessed by demons, or whether it's just him putting it on or something else entirely.
* MeaningfulName: His followers gave him the name "Akuma", which literally translates into "devil", but in this context has a meaning closer to "demon".
* NeverHurtAnInnocent:
** Played with. Akuma firmly believes that the worst sorts of people are those who would kill innocents... which is why he ''approves'' of Monobear's mutual killing game, because Monobear is only "weeding out the worst", his game just provides the opportunity for murderers to reveal themselves, so Monobear can then execute the murderers. So when Akemi keeping a secret results in an innocent being executed in chapter 2's trial, Akuma goes berserk and yells that he hates Akemi.
** Akuma finally drops his sympathy for Monobear after chapter 6's execution, upon realizing that since most of the motives so far have been threatening everyone's lives rather than asking murderers to kill out of selfishness, Akuma now realizes that Monobear doesn't really care about justice, he just wants people to die.
* RealMenHateSugar: "Sweets" are listed among Akuma's dislikes on his personal blog.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech:
** Akuma gives one to the first culprit; the first culprit took Monokuma's bait, thinking it was worth it to kill Kiriko Kurosawa just to get back what the culprit had lost. The first culprit is not innocent, they chose this, so now the first culprit will die for their sins.
** He gives another one in chapter 2 to Akemi, because he's convinced that Akemi wouldn't have kept secrets about the circumstances of Valentina's death if Akemi wasn't involved, and now the class is about to execute an innocent person instead. Akuma feels that all Akemi deserves is a dagger to the chest.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: As befitting a SHSL Demonologist talented enough to be dubbed "Akuma" by his followers, Akuma has red eyes. But Akuma doesn't kill anyone, and survives to endgame.
* ShoutOut: In chapter 4, among the items Akuma wins from the Monomachine is a record of "What's New Pussycat" by Music/TomJones.
* SpeakIllOfTheDead: When the first body is discovered, he states that he's relieved someone was finally murdered, as things might finally get interesting. He stops speaking ill of the dead after chapter 6, upon realizing that Monobear is not the agent of justice Akuma thought he was.
* TookALevelInBadass: He names Heather as a suspect to the rest of the class, which eventually leads to Heather being caught as the first culprit.
%%* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Tamago Gohan.

!!Andy Dime
!!!SHSL Professional Pinball Player
[[quoteright:172:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/andy_dime_856.png]]

Andy Dime is a foreigner, but has lived in Japan most of his life. He’s African American. He’s a pretty unenthusiastic guy, really. Except for pinball. He’s the only professional pinball player in Japan. Since he’s the only professional pinball player, he is automatically SHSL Extremist Professional Pinball Player (EPPP, for short.) In reality, he actually sucks at Pinball. His extreme and passionate playing was intense enough to be invited into Hopes Peak Academy, although.

Andy Dime is the chapter 3 murder victim, killed by Naohiro using blunt force trauma.
----
* ButNotTooForeign: Has lived in Japan for most of his life despite being a foreigner.
%%* CurtainsMatchTheWindow
%%* DiesWideOpenDiesWideOpen
* NotSoStoic: After the first execution, Andy's voice briefly cracks as he muses about how crazy this is.
* OverlyNarrowSuperlative: As described on his profile, in part he gained his SHSL talent since he's the "only professional pinball player".
* {{Pinball}}: His SHSL talent is playing this.
* TheStoic: Described as a "pretty unenthusiastic guy".
* WeHardlyKnewYe: This is the reaction of a few of Andy's classmates to his death in chapter 3 (and Ryouko's relationships page literally says, "We hardly knew ye"), but notably the same classmates also muse that despite not having known Andy very well, Andy was obviously a good guy and he didn't deserve this.

!!Fumio Yasu
!!!SHSL Mechanical Engineer
[[quoteright:182:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yeehaw_4660.png]]

Born into a world full of politics, Yasu is shrouded with mysteries all around him, though his cheerful-like nature dissipates that suspicion with a smile. His father and mother are both well-known politicians, with his eldest brother being a world famous military historian- a child prodigy as claimed by some others. He almost appears to be shrouded by this fame, but rumors spread, and things could be what they actually aren't.

Upon moving out of where he used to live, he met his future robotics partner, which then they'll both rise to fame, and one out of the two getting an acceptance letter from Hope's Peak Academy. During their rise to fame, they competed in various robotics competitions together, often times Yasu had strayed off from being affixed to competitions, and designed his own mechanisms, which caught the academy's eye quickly after he had revealed them in an interview with a reporter.

He is one of the victims of Chapter 8, killed along with Hirashi. He dies of severe blood loss from a wound in his stomach.
----
* BrutalHonesty: He has a tendency to say things directly to a person if he has to inform them of something, such as say, ''someone died.''
* ComplexityAddiction: This shows up in his very complex Rube Goldberg machines he has taken a fancy to make to pass the time.
* TheEngineer: Naturally. He gets to use his talent in chapter eight to help fix Monomi.
* FamousAncestor: His brother, Fumio Akira, being a famous military historian. This may include his parents who are politicians.
%%* GoOutWithASmile
* IntelligenceEqualsIsolation: He has difficulty going ahead and talking to people casually, the conversations always end into an awkward air around it.
* KindnessButton: Upon pushing too far into a topic he's slightly unprepared to ask, this comes up. It's hard to tell when this occurs however, depending on what personality the person he's talking to has.
* MeaningfulName: His family name/surname, "Fumio", means "literary/scholarly child", a perfect name for someone who has competed in robotics competitions. His given name, "Yasu", can either mean "peace", "peaceful", or "level", and Yasu is usually calm and composed (and as detailed under TranquilFury below, he looks composed even when angry).
* NeatFreak: It appears to be visible in his room, the furniture is all at a specific angle, and most of the objects he has are in pairs, excluding one drawer.
* NoSell: Yasu thinks Monobear's chapter 3 motive is "lame", and "perhaps the bear should do better."
* NoSenseofPersonalSpace: He's known to take someone else's hand in the middle of one of his ramblings that could go on for a long time.
* NotSoWeak: He appears weaker than he really is, even though in his about page, he's able to lift things that are heavier than himself with ease- more with just a little more effort.
* OfficialCouple: With Hirashi, as of Chapter 5. This becomes TogetherInDeath in Chapter 8, when Hirashi and Yasu both being the victims of this chapter.
* PetTheDog: Helps fix Monomi in chapter 8.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: He has red-violet eyes, one being a little bit lighter than the other. However, he doesn't kill anyone, so the "take warning" part of this trope is averted.
* SweetTooth: Loves sweets a lot. Lollipops are his favorite.
* TakeMeInstead: Attempts to volunteer for chapter 5's motive of torturing people to death until a murder occurs; Yasu attempts to volunteer so no one else gets hurt. Monobear doesn't give a definite yes or no, he just says "You're all depraved. Ew."
* TenderTears: After chapter 3's trial ends, Yasu discovers to his own surprise that he's ''scared'', scared of dying to be precise, and he starts to cry.
* TranquilFury: It's difficult to tell if someone has ticked him off too much, which then he proceeds to either use a sneak attack or aim right for the gut with a quick kick. Most likely while being composed and smiling.
* WouldHitAGirl: Does as much in the chapter three trial, tapping Mikazuki on the shoulder then punching her in the face.

!!Ginji Gohyaku
!!!SHSL Marksman
[[quoteright:226:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ginji_5662.png]]

Ginji could be at first described as the hopeful teammate, sympathetic, here to listen to your stories and issues you want to share. In depth, he is a rather strange character. It is hard to tell if he’s on the good or the bad side, and it is also hard to tell if he’s your friend, your enemy, or a neutral.
He has avoided multiple times being imprisoned for his job, as he has both served for illegal causes, for patriotism and for the government. He does not have any principles, he just follows what people tell him he should do without judging the pros and cons. Some people may say he is ignorant, that he doesn’t know what is good nor what is evil, he is often described as a ‘tool’ of humanity.

After the class votes for the wrong person in chapter 2's trial, Ginji stands up to Monobear by pointing a gun at him, but Ginji's gun malfunctions and sprays oil and sparks on him, setting him on fire. However, under care of Monomi, he survives this and returns in chapter four. However, he is murdered in chapter 5 by being shot in the chest by Toru and thus is KilledOffForReal.
----
%%* AlliterativeName
* DevilsAdvocate: Plays this in the chapter one case, going so far as hurting himself to make a blood trail in his room and frame himself in a SelfSacrificeScheme.
* {{Expy}}: He bears some coincidental similarities to Nagito Komaeda from ''VisualNovel/Danganronpa2GoodbyeDespair''. His sprite "poses" are based off Komaeda's, which wouldn't count on its own. However, Ginji also thinks of himself as lowlier than his classmates (though in Ginji's case he calls himself "just a murderer" rather than "just trash"), thinks his classmates are all awesome and immensely talented, tries to cover for the first culprit to encourage the first culprit's hope, but then gives up on the first culprit in disgust when the culprit gets caught anyway. And just like Komaeda, Ginji eventually wishes everyone else would die, though in Ginji's case this is after he recovers from being treated for burns by Monomi. Finally, just like Komaeda, Ginji is specifically the chapter 5 [[spoiler:murder victim, as Komaeda was the chapter 5 victim in ''Dangan Ronpa 2''.]]
%%* ExtremeDoormat
%%* JustFollowingOrders: A very big part of his talent, and his character.
* MeaningfulName: Ginji Gohyaku's name, when written in Japanese, literally means "two silver" and "five hundred", as explained on his profile on his personal page.
* NotQuiteDead: Eventually confirmed to be alive, just badly burnt from the gun malfunction. Unfortunately, after that he becomes chapter 5's murder victim.
* OfficialCouple: With Nakunaru. Unfortunately, this is cut short when Ginji is murdered in chapter 5.
* ThePromise: He insists to Jaz after she tells him she was convinced he was dead that he will always be there for her, along with Nakunaru and Akemi. It's horribly broken in chapter five, when both Ginji and Nakunaru are found dead.
* PsychologicalTormentZone: This is what Ginji appears to expect from the afterlife upon waking up there- he sits frozen in place, waiting for all those he's killed as part of his job to fulfill their last words to him such as 'See you in Hell' and 'I'll be waiting for you'. Luckily for Ginji, with the nature of the afterlife in the game, it's subverted.
* SelfDeprecation: He shows in the chapter one trial that he feels he doesn't deserve to be around the other students, as their talents are ones that bring hope whereas his just makes him a murderer.
* ShoutOut: Ginji's shirt coincidentally resembles ComicBook/CaptainAmerica's shield. Honoka even nicknames him "America-kun" for this reason. Eventually, after he [[ManOnFire gets burned]], all his clothes are completely burned, including his Captain America shirt, so he ties an American flag bandanna around his arm instead.
* TakeMeInstead: Ginji does this ''twice''. He tries to cover for Heather in chapter 1, and in chapter 2 he confesses to murdering Valentina. But since his confession turned out to be false in chapter 1, the class doesn't take his chapter 2 confession seriously. Also, in chapter 2's trial Monobear gets so annoyed that he ''overrules Ginji'' and confirms personally that Ginji isn't the culprit, ''before'' the vote takes place (usually Monobear will keep silent if the class is about to vote wrong, so this is an unusual move for him).
%%* TogetherInDeath
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Tangerines, which are listed among his "likes" on his personal page.
* TranquilFury: He accomplishes his missions with extreme peace of mind, shooting down a person will not alarm him, and being in a dangerous situation is neither a problem for him as long as he can swiftly escape from it. He most likely remains calm when a situation takes a wrong turn, like finding a dead body or watching someone's execution.
* WallSlump: The state his body is in when it's found in the hallway.

!!Haruka Arishima
!!!SHSL Interior Designer
[[quoteright:227:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/harukaastral_7937.png]]

Haruka Arishima is a happy, energetic, and sweet seventeen year old who came from a rural town in Japan. After helping her parents renovate and redesign their house at the age of eleven, she realized her true knack for handiwork and helpfulness. Taken in by many various designing companies and put into the business at the age of fourteen, she spent her next years working as hard as she could to help others and give everybody a taste of the creativity she had to offer. She was drafted into Hope's Peak after pulling off many famous renovations that had made their way onto the television and once at the academy was even asked to help with designing new dorm rooms for a potential campus renovation.

She's chapter seven's victim, dying from blood loss caused by wounds to her neck. The class votes on her due to the lack of a suspect, despite this case obviously not being a suicide. Of course, this is wrong, and Shika is executed.
----
* AllLovingHero: Not only is she nice to everybody, but she loves everybody. Literally. Romantically? No. But she sure does think everybody's unique and special in her own way!
* BewareTheNiceOnes: When Jaz indirectly accuses Naohiro (and Toru directly accuses Naohiro) of chapter 3's murder, Haruka, while still smiling nicely, goes on a huge verbal spiel about what a liar Jaz is, and then accuses Jaz of being the culprit. This is all done with stars in her eyes, an anime device normally associated with happiness.
* BlitheSpirit: Due to her spirit of wanting to help others and be the best person she could be, although she didn't have to accept the challenge to becoming an interior designer, she went for it and viewed it as a new challenge for her to face and overcome.
* {{Determinator}}: As expected, she contains a lot of determination. You can't get her hopes down no matter what the situation.
* DidNotDoTheBloodyResearch: Intentional example. Haruka almost uses the word "fuck" in one post during chapter 3's trial, but she thinks that would make everyone hate her, so she uses "bloody" instead, even though "bloody" is a curse word in England...however, this is intentional on Haruka's part, as since no one in the class is from England, no one would recognize the word "bloody" as a swear. However, in Haruka's next post after that one, she gets angry enough at Toru to use the word "fuck" anyway.
* DyingMessage: The word 'JAZ' is found near Haruka's body, suggesting she wrote it in [[CouldntFindAPen her blood]] before she died. During the trial it's discussed that the culprit wrote the message themselves to try and frame Jaz. In chapter eight, Jaz confesses to killing Haruka and 'framing herself', so really both were right.
* {{Expy}}: Haruka's "poses" are based off Sonia Nevermind's poses from ''VisualNovel/Danganronpa2GoodbyeDespair'', which wouldn't ordinarily count on its own, but Haruka also has Sonia's "nice girl" personality, tries to get along with all her classmates and thus is as friendly and outgoing as Sonia, and she even has Sonia's capacity for an aura of leadership when necessary. All of this is intentional, so that the later subversion comes as more of a shock: unlike Sonia, Haruka's friendly personality is an act, she's really a StepfordSmiler. Also, one important difference between Haruka and Sonia is that, unlike Sonia, [[spoiler:Haruka doesn't survive; she's murdered in chapter 7.]]
* TheLeader: A natural born leader, she knows how to take control of a situation and find peace and order within a group of arguing fools.
* NiceGirl: She's nice to everybody. What's the point in being mean and creating enemies? Because of this trait, Haruka hugs Akemi after chapter 2's trial and tells Akemi that Haruka doesn't hate her, providing a source of relief for Akemi that at least one classmate doesn't hate her.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: The third trial, in ''spades''. When the students start to blame Naohiro, Haruka's sweet act is revealed to be just that- an act.
* PetTheDog: Hugging Akemi in chapter 2's trial and saying she doesn't hate her.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: She has pinkish-red eyes, but has not yet killed anyone. And doesn't kill anyone- she's chapter seven's victim. Mildly comes into play during chapter one's trial, when she rather loudly accuses Nakunaru of being a liar. All with her standard, sweet smile sprite. She does it again during chapter two's trial, when Ginji tries to falsely confess to the murder. And then it hits ''hard'' in the third trial, when Haruka goes completely berserk while trying to insist Nao isn't the murderer. [[http://media.tumblr.com/23bdeb0c7b3100f7bd7b1546b98ec4fe/tumblr_inline_n6i4zlgBvD1sxpmu3.png Holy shit, Haruka]].
* StepfordSmiler: Haruka is actually loud and brash; her laughter is just an act.
* TakeMeInstead: Confesses to chapter 3's murder because, as it turns out, she was trying to take the fall for Naohiro. It doesn't work; the class manages to figure out who the true culprit was.
* WingdingEyes: Her irises appear to be flower-shaped, representing her love for gardening, her adoration for floral patterns & accessories, and her overall polite, gentle, delicate nature- such as a flower.

!!Heather Sunderland
!!!SHSL Pro Wrestler
[[quoteright:197:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/heather_sunderland_6133.png]]

Heather moved to Japan in order to pursue her dream of being a professional wrestler, figuring the women are treated better in Japan than in the popular American federations. She joined an all-female league with a mixed wrestling side-league and quickly rose to the top with her unorthodox high-flying style. She dominated the leagues and was soon seen as one of, if not the best to grace the squared circle. However, all this had her neglect her schooling, invited to Hope’s Peak for her talent to make up for those years and be granted all she missed, which is why she’s entering at such an old age.

She becomes the first culprit in killing Kiriko, though the students correctly pin her as the murderer.
----
* ArrogantKungFuGirl: When interacting with new people, she usually puts on a front of always being the best.
* BackToSchool: Her motivation for entering Hope's Peak, since her commitment to professional wrestling caused her to neglect her schooling at first.
%%* CurtainsMatchTheWindow
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Heather is chained by her ankles to a device that's rolling her down an entrance ramp in a mockery of a pro wrestling entrance. The device then extends to thousands of feet in the air, as the "ring" underneath is suddenly lit on fire. Finally, the mechanism catapults Heather off, so Heather falls to her death, dying on impact as her body hits the flames.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Heather has no memory of anything before she was 16, so her pro wrestling was all she had. Fortunately for her, Natasha took her in and cared for her, but Natasha died because of a "stupid accident" that Heather caused, in Heather's words.
* DefrostingIceQueen: She cares very much for the people she gets close to and can tend to have quite the sensitive emotions.
* GoGetterGirl: Heather wanted to pursue her dream of being a pro wrestler, and was willing to move from America to Japan to do it. She then climbed to the top of the leagues in which she wrestled and became a SHSL Pro Wrestler.
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: The chapter 1 motive was a guarantee to restore a student's former status at the top of their field if they can create the "perfect murder". This is what motivates Heather to kill Kiriko, since if she got away with it she would be restored to the top of the professional wrestling field and she'd get all her fans back. Unfortunately for her, she doesn't create the perfect murder, because the other students manage to figure out it was her.
* OrphansOrdeal: Her parents died to a rare virus, making her an orphan. She was then taken in by a facility conducting tests on offspring of virus carriers, and those tests turned her hair purple. Then at age 15 she was finally declared virus-free, so the facility drugged her to erase all of her memories before finally giving her up for adoption. This is why she has no memory of anything before she was 16. However, after being adopted things got much better for Heather from there, as Heather's new adoptive brother was already doing well as a wrestler and Heather trained hard to do what he could do, eventually creating her own moveset.
* SacrificialLion: Heather is the first culprit to be executed, and thus it's Heather's execution that drives home to the class how serious executions are.

!!Hirashi Abe
!!!SHSL Talent Manager
[[quoteright:280:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hopeful_6688.png]]

Hirashi’s career as a talent manager began with him helping a friend that was a member of a rising idol group, who were having difficulties with business affairs and their public image. After the media discovered it was him who had cleaned up the group’s act, it didn't take long for companies to come to him, almost begging him to get some of those rowdy young adults under control, which he agreed to do, almost too happily. His frequent appearances with celebrities and their continuous praise of him for turning their careers around caught the attention of Hope’s Peak, and he was eventually invited to attend the school.

He is one of the victims of Chapter 8, alongside Yasu. He dies of strangulation.
----
%%* ActualPacifist
* AmbiguouslyGay: After chapter 5, Hirashi no longer remains "ambiguous", and openly pursues a relationship with Yasu, another male.
%%* ApologizesALot: This is actually a useful skill in Hirashi's line of work.
* ArmourPiercingQuestion:
** Towards Jaz in the fifth trial, shocking her out of her tirade towards his friend Toru:
---> '''Hirashi:''' You out of everyone should know what it’s like to have ''innocent'' friends die. Why are you so eager for it to happen again, to someone else?
** Hirashi's armor piercing question to Jaz is subverted later however, as Toru ''does'' turn out to be guilty, so Jaz was not accusing an innocent after all.
* BilingualBonus: He's fluent in ASL, JSL, Japanese, and Morse Code. He also can write in English and speak some Korean. As of yet, these have never been written into a post, only the translations.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: But a more positively-portrayed example of this trope than most. Hirashi is Super-High-School-Level talented at being a Talent Manager, but when Hirashi is not in his element, Hirashi's own player self-deprecatingly scolds Hirashi for having poor social skills. It should still be noted that Hirashi is positively portrayed as intelligent despite this deficiency.

And, after all of this happens, he is murdered alongside his boyfriend in Chapter 8.
* HeartbreakAndIceCream: To a degree. After the events of Chapter 4, Hirashi goes to the kitchen, sits on the counter, and eats his troubles away.
-->'''Hirashi:''' I don’t usually sit alone, eat ice cream and cry, but it’s been a rough few weeks.
* InTouchWithHisFeminineSide: He's apparently quite conscious of his appearance, and one can find nail polish in his room. He also wears a lot of pink.
* ItsAllMyFault: Seen immediately after Ginji's is set on fire during the aftermath of the second trial. He actually repeats this aloud.
* KidsAreCruel: Briefly elaborated on during a conversation with Yasu, as well as in the narration. In exact words,
-->"Yeah, I get you. I, ah, won’t go into detail, but my darling classmates weren’t too fond of me. They liked to let me and K— I- I mean, they liked to let me know that. Daily. ''[...]'' Then, as he knew all too well, he’d sound like a (as his middle school classmates so eloquently put it) 'fucking freak'."

%%* SharpDressedMan
* ShoutOut:

** The red sweater Hirashi wears in chapter 3 bears the "I Got A Boy" logo, from Music/GirlsGeneration. Additionally, the pink sweater he has worn from chapter 4 onward bears a Music/KyaryPamyuPamyu logo.
* ShyFingerTwiddling: Sort of. He fingerspells (using sign language letters to spell words).
* SophisticatedAsHell: Seen in the first trial.

* VerbalBusinessCard: "Hirashi Abe. Talent Manager."
* YesMan: He works with idols for a living. A little flattery goes a long way during a temper tantrum.

!!Honoka Kita
!!!SHSL Environmentalist
[[quoteright:171:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/honokacrop_9126.png]]

With outstanding number of environmental awards and a bestselling book called “Rise Of The Great Garden Spirits”, Honoka is known for her great work as an Environmentalist (or as some like to say it, Tree Hugger). Honoka has always had a fixation and love for nature. When she was little, she always said she would one day create a world where “Trees and people would live in peace” or “Trees and flowers talk so humans could understand how they felt”. Of course, these things could not come true, but Honoka later found herself doing much more helpful things what she imagined. In earlier years of Honoka’s career, she participated in little events like fundraising, volunteering to pick up trash, and gardening.

Later in Honoka’s career, she got an idea that just doing some simple events wouldn’t get the job done. She had to go bigger, fly higher, go up to the stars where no one been before. She started to study things like Ecology, Environmental Law, and Environmentalism. She started to discover new ways to help nature. Very shortly soon, Honoka’s career began to bloom as she would start to do things that she could never imagine she could do to help save nature.

At the beginning of chapter 6, Honoka falls asleep in the Green House--but this breaks one of Monobear's rules about where the students can sleep, so Monobear kills her by impaling her with spears.
----
* AccidentalHero: Honoka suggests to Heather that Heather should strip, which reveals an incriminating wound that proves Heather is chapter 1's culprit. However, this was accidental, as Honoka actually thought Heather was innocent, and only suggested stripping so Heather could prove said innocence.
%% Doesn't explain what the reaction is. * BerserkButton: Don't ever just ''rip'' flowers out instead of picking them properly, as the chapter 2 culprit did.
%%* BlushSticker: Sports this in her sprites.
%%* TheCutie
* {{Fanservice}}: Honoka's one of the few people to comply when Akemi suggests that the class strip to prove they don't have incriminating wounds on them. But Honoka only takes off her clothes ''very briefly'', revealing a green bra and blue panties, and then puts her clothes back on as quickly as humanly possible.
* {{Forgiveness}}: Honoka's parents taught her the value of this, as she mentions in chapter 4's trial when chewing out Lukas for accusing Akemi.
* GranolaGirl: A notable and refreshing aversion. Honoka is not portrayed as irrational about her environmentalism; rather, this is a positive trait of her character and not a negative one, and Honoka is played as a sweet and nice girl throughout the game.
%%* HeroicBSOD: Naohiro being caught and executed in chapter 3's trial drives Honoka into this.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: At the beginning of chapter 6, Honoka falls asleep in a place where it's forbidden for students to sleep, so Monobear kills her by impaling her with spears for breaking a rule.

* NiceGirl: She's nice to everyone she meets.
* TheNicknamer: Honoka has a different nickname for each classmate, often used in dialogue.
* NoodleIncident: There's a piece of paper in Honoka's dorm in the second drawer that reads, "Just in case!" As the narration itself notes, it's not clear what "just in case" means in this context.
* PrecisionFStrike: When the class starts accusing Naohiro for chapter 3's murder, Honoka screams, "'''CAN EVERYONE IN THIS DAMN COURTROOM SHUT THE FUCK UP'''!!!!"

!!!SHSL Rapper
[[quoteright:198:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mikazukicrop_9576.png]]

Raised by her—incredibly popular rapper—uncle since birth, Mikazuki had always shown signs of being an aspiring rapper. Taking interest in topics such as how fast she could rap along to songs, she grew more talented by the minute. There wasn’t anything about the mere topic of rap music that didn’t interest her—even topics such as deaths caused by rap fueds simply motivated her to try and prevent them from happening—and, by age 10, she was about as skilled as any highly experienced rapper. Freestyling, rap battles, even simple portrayals of her skills—you name it, she could do it. One of her most impressive feats was holding the world record for fastest rapping; 900 syllables rapped in under a minute. At age 16, she was one of the—if not the—most talented rappers on planet Earth. With intricate verses, and songs about topics that actually needed recognition that wasn’t downplayed with derogatory meanings, Mikazuki was a favorite of rap fans everywhere.

Survives to endgame.
----
* AccidentalKiss: After chapter 3's trial ends, Mikazuki jumps forward to hug Miwa, but their lips touch by accident.
* ACupAngst: However, in a positive portrayal of this trope, this is not a central point of Mikazuki's character and rarely comes up.

%%* ClusterFBomb: When reacting to Monokuma's sudden appearance.
* CrushBlush: During the third trial, although it is unknown who she is crushing on. During a funeral service in her room in chapter 5, she finally admits who it was, by saying that she was "full goddamn lesbian" for Miwa, and she wants to tell her uncle about this sweet girl she knew and adored.
%%* CuteBruiser: Punches Hirashi during the third trial.
* DoesNotLikeMen: One of the first things she says to everyone is a statement declaring that if any boys were to go near her, she would punch them in either the face or the nuts. It's eventually revealed that she has "androphobia".
* DueToTheDead: In chapter 5, she holds a private funeral service in her dormitory and tells all the victims and executed culprits how unfair it was that they died, how sorry she is that it happened to them, and how happy she wishes they could be in the afterlife.
* FlippingTheBird: During chapter 6's trial; as she flips off Nikki while voting for them.
* FollowInMyFootsteps: Mikazuki enthusiastically followed in the footsteps, not of her parents, but of her rapper uncle, whose teachings both helped her win a rap battle (which kick-started her rapper career since it caused a major record label to take notice of her talent) and helped her see how awful men could be to women.
* FunetikAksent: Portrayed literally in the dialogue. For example:
-->"If anyone says anythin’ ‘bout m’ chest, I swear t’ fuck ‘m gonna rip y’ a new asshole. We clear?"
%%* GamerChick
* HeteronormativeCrusader: Has a very brief slip-up into this during chapter 1's trial, when she insists that men are stronger than girls (so the culprit, who used physical strength to kill the victim, has to be a guy), and that women clean better than men (so since the culprit did a lousy clean-up job, again it has to be a guy). Aimé calls her out on this, causing her to apologize and retract her argument. And it turns out the first culprit is a ''female'' classmate, further invalidating the argument.
* IAmNotPretty: Refuses to believe that she possesses any form of attractive qualities.
%%* InnocentBlueEyes
* KickChick: Mikazuki has strong legs, making her an excellent fighter with them.
* KidsAreCruel: During the first trial, Mikazuki backs up her reasoning as to why she dislikes men so much. Her reason? In 9th grade, she was physically assaulted by three male classmates.
* LesbianJock: Mikazuki did wrestling in middle school, a sport commonly associated with this trope. Confirmed to have feelings for Miwa in chapter 3, breaks down in tears at Miwa's death in chapter 4, and during the funeral service she holds for Miwa in chapter 5, Mikazuki confirms aloud that she was "full goddamn lesbian", in her own words, for Miwa. And through all of this Mikazuki maintains an assertive, take-no-nonsense jock personality.
* LittleMissBadass: Prior to the events of Astral Academia, Mikazuki was in a gang known as Bitch Rebellion. Some of her notable feats from those days include tracking down and setting a man's house on fire, because she caught him catcalling. Also, Mikazuki is badass enough to survive all the trials.
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: Mikazuki and Naohiro, talent-wise. While being a rapper is a predominately male talent, a cosmetologist is a predominately female talent.
* MotorMouth: But not a negatively portrayed example of this trope, since being able to speak very quickly is a necessary skill for a SHSL Rapper.
%%* MusclesAreMeaningless
* NoSell: Rather than despairing at the idea that her family could be being tortured or killed, Mikazuki seems to express ''joy'' at chapter three's motive.
* OddFriendship: With Miwa. Mikazuki confirms in chapter 5 that if Miwa hadn't been murdered in chapter 4, Mikazuki would have tried to move from "friendship" to "relationship" with Miwa.
* {{Omniglot}}: In addition to her native Japanese, Mikazuki can understand Spanish--only one phrase, however. What phrase does she know? How to ask where to find a ''strip club''. It also appears that she knows a fair bit of Korean, seeing as during the first trial, she gives her reason as to why she dislikes men, in--you guessed it--Korean.
* PintsizedPowerhouse: According to several headcanons on her personal blog, Mikazuki is a lot stronger than her height may lead on; seeing as she's only 4'8". She was both the strongest wrestler out of her entire middle school, and in a gang.
* ThePromise: Mikazuki promises Miwa--well, Miwa's ''dead body''--that she will bring her killer to justice. And she succeeds; the class votes for the correct person as the culprit, and Miwa's murderer is executed, just as Mikazuki promised.
* RaisedByDudes: Was raised by her uncle up until the age of 15.
* SelfDeprecation: Seen on her relations page when referring to herself; "That’s me. Pathetic."
%%* SheCleansUpNicely
* ShoutOut: At one point during chapter 3's trial, Mikazuki plays "Fuck You" by Music/LilyAllen on her iPod, which at the moment she plays it summarizes Mikazuki's feelings about Haruka.
%%* SirSwearsALot
* TakeThat: When Mikazuki gives a speech welcoming the five newcomers in chapter 5, she tells them she's a supporter of pretty much everyone, as long as they're not either an asshole or a men's rights activist.
* TalkingToTheDead: During chapter 4, Mikazuki often talked to Miwa's body, iterating how she was sorry and how she shouldn't have died.
%%* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The tomboy to Miwa's girly-girl.

!!Jasmine 'Jaz' Hayes
!!!SHSL Electronic Engineer
[[quoteright:227:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ee_final_1043.png]]

Jasmine 'Jaz' Hayes had been building small circuits and designing much larger ones for several years before her talent was recognised by the world at large. When a school project she took much, much further than was required of her starting gaining large interest on the blog she uses to showcase her efforts, it only took a short while longer of posting to attract the attention of Hope's Peak. She's since even sold some of her now much larger designs and projects to production companies as she continues to develop her talent. A girl only just starting to come out of her shell from a strict upbringing, Jaz is much more energetic and enthusiastic than her formal stance initially suggests, desperate to learn everything she possibly can about everything and discover herself.

In chapter 8's trial, Jaz confesses to having murdered Haruka in chapter 7 and let Shika take the fall, but she confesses to being a murderer to avoid being suspected of being the mastermind. Survives to endgame.
----
* BlueWithShock: A few times in the chapter five trial. And again during the final trial when a mastermind vote goes through, due to Monokuma saying the vote passed 'with help from their dead friends'.
* ConditionedToAcceptHorror: By chapter eight, she doesn't even seem surprised that someone she had just become friends with is now dead.
* ConfessToALesserCrime: During chapter eight's mastermind discussion, Jaz confesses to murdering Haruka to try and prove she's not the mastermind of the mutual killing; responsible for ''all'' the murders and despair rather than just one death. It works; Jaz isn't executed for the murder she committed because the class succeeds in catching the mastermind.
* CryIntoChest: Towards Akemi after discovering the second body in chapter five.
* DespairEventHorizon: After Akemi is murdered in chapter 6, as Jaz breaks down, she shouts "YOU WIN!" to the air, and then asks Ginji and Nakunaru to look after Akemi from "up there" before hugging herself the way Akemi had held her.
* {{Determinator}}: Has a very strong drive to do things ''her'' way, at her ''own'' pace, more often than not for herself first and foremost.
* DistractedByTheSexy: A variant; when Akemi strips during the first trial, Jaz gets ''really'' flustered out of embarrassment and has to pointedly avoid looking at Akemi.
* DueToTheDead: She leaves flowers in Ginji, Nakunaru and Toru's dorms after the fifth trial.
* TheEngineer: Naturally. She gets to use her talents in chapter four, when Monomi takes her to fix the power after Monokuma shuts it off for a motive, and again in chapter 8 in a collaboration with Yasu to fix the broken Monomi.
%%* HeroicBSOD:
%%** Chapter 2's trial drives Jaz into this.
%%** Even more so in chapter five, when both Ginji ''and'' Nakunaru are found dead.
%%** And even ''more'' so in chapter six, when Akemi is found dead.
* HumanNotepad: Is fond of doodling on her hands and arms to concentrate, or alternatively, using them as paper when she's lacking some. It helps that the sleeves of her usual jacket leave most of her arms bare. She turns up to chapter three's trial with all the evidence she found written up and down her arms.
* ItsAllMyFault:
** Feels this about a good portion of chapter two's events, namely, the deaths.
** And again after she thinks of the possibility that her helping to turn the lights back on may have helped chapter 4's culprit kill Miwa.
* ItsPersonal: Very much so in chapter five's case, to the point where Jaz actually becomes ''scared'' of how she starts acting in the trial.
* KarmaHoudini: Jaz confessed during chapter 8's trial to being the one who killed Haruka in chapter 7, but this confession comes too late to have any consequences for Jaz, since Shika already took the fall instead. Also, Jaz survives the game.
* TheKetchupTest: Performed during chapter eight's investigation, with the watered down pink substance near Yasu's body. She's said to question her life and choices just before doing it.
* KleptomaniacHeroFoundUnderwear: It's possible for the reader to find Jaz's underwear in her room, complete with caption saying 'the panty raid is complete'.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Feels this way after helping to turn the lights back on in chapter 4, only for Monobear to announce that the lights coming back on may have helped the culprit check what they were doing to their victim.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: Feels this when Haruka starts accusing her of being the culprit during chapter three's trial, on the grounds that Jaz was the only person to find and bring up what turned out to be crucial evidence.
* OfficialCouple: With Akemi as of chapter 3. Unfortunately cut short when Akemi is killed in Chapter 6.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Up until Ginji's apparent death in the aftermath of chapter two's trial, Jaz had never used curse words , which is why it's shocking for her to scream at the trial room to 'PLEASE- just- ''FUCKING''- STOP!'
* ThePerfectionist: Jaz has to make her work - and anything she does, really - the best it can be. She has to know everything and she has to be able to do everything, to the point where she honestly seems ''terrified'' if something goes even slightly wrong.
* PetTheDog: Helps fix Monomi in chapter 8.
%%* PleaseWakeUp: Towards Nakunaru and Ginji in chapter five.
* ShoutOut: When going through Jaz's room, one of the options is 'Squawk like an imbecile and shit on the desk'. Clicking it takes you to a disgruntled picture of [[Webcomic/{{Homestuck}} Jane Crocker]].
* SkewedPriorities: Upon finding out they're apparently stuck in a space base forever, Jaz... decides to test whether the claim that their ID's are indestructible is really true. Justified in that she wants to focus on something familiar for comfort, and the electronic ID is a perfect distraction for the engineer.
* SweetTooth: Jaz always carries sweets with her, with her favourite being lollipops.
* TakeMeInstead: Offers to be the innocent executed after chapter two's mistrial, on the grounds that she truly believes she should be because of her suggesting the wrong culprit, and the fact that Monokuma had already suggested they execute her anyway. It doesn't work; Monobear chooses to execute someone unrelated to the murder entirely.
* TalkingToTheDead:
** Slips into this a few times during the fifth trial, apologising to Ginji and Nakunaru whenever she feels she can't carry on and asking them whether they would think she was 'doing good enough'.
** Again after finding Akemi's body in chapter six, tearfully begging Ginji and Nakunaru to take care of her in the afterlife and apologising that she never told Akemi she loved her.
* TookALevelInBadass: In chapter 5's trial, Jaz produces one of the two clues that, taken together, prove who the culprit is. Before the trial, Jaz found the murder weapon in Toru's room and took it from the room before Toru could get rid of it. Jaz then reveals during the trial where the weapon was found.
* TragicKeepsake:
** When both her best friends Ginji and Nakunaru are murdered in chapter five, she takes both their bandannas and ties them around her arm.
** Again in chapter six, taking Akemi's hat. Investigating her dorm also shows a black zippered sweatshirt that used to belonged to Akemi there, borrowed and never returned.
** Yasu provides her with another one in chapter eight: a Captain America t-shirt from the Monomachine identical to the one Ginji used to wear. She receives it somewhat emotionally.
* TraumaCongaLine:
** While nothing had directly happened to Jaz, she felt responsible for many of the events happening around her up to the aftermath of chapter two's trial. First she swears to show her roommate that she doesn't have to be scared of the people in the base, only for Kiriko to be the first victim. During the chapter two trial she is determined to prove herself good enough and pushes votes towards Lukas, only for him to be revealed as innocent and another innocent to eventually be executed instead. Not only that, her crush was the scared killer. Her good friend Ginji then (presumably) burns to death in front of her after he reacts to Monokuma's earlier threat to Jaz, so Jaz feels responsible for that and Nakunaru breaking at the loss of Ginji due to provoking Monokuma. Considering a good portion of these events happens within the space of presumably mere hours, it's no wonder Jaz blacks out at the end of the trial.
** It only extends in chapter five with the deaths of Ginji and Nakunaru, Jaz's best friends in the base.
** It extends even further in chapter six with the death of Akemi, Jaz's girlfriend as of chapter three.
* UnusualEuphemism: While she does swear often, Jaz prefers to replace curse words with her own... variations, somewhat spelling out the word ('half a double s') or just replacing it with another word entirely ('pigging'). As of the chapter five trial, however, these seem to have been dropped entirely.
* YouLeaveHimAlone: Gives this on behalf of Ginji after Monokuma berates him for being 'hopey'. It backfires somewhat when Monokuma threatens to execute Jaz instead, and she then ends up feeling ''incredibly'' guilty when she starts considering that Ginji's threat to Monokuma partly came from this defence and led to his apparent death.

Images of Kiriko first started circulating the web a year prior to her admittance to Hope’s Peak when a link to her personal blog was posted on the Japanese textboard, 2ch. Noted for her “doll-like facial features,” “fetishized outfits” and “clumsily-cute text posts,” she attracted many followers to her blog—more than she could have possibly imagined. With roughly 0.9% of Japanese Internet users viewing her blog each day, Kiriko’s blog was one of the most viewed websites in Japan. Most posts on her blog include pair pictures of herself dressed in cosplay with encouraging text, with the intention to encourage others to work just as hard as she is.

"Kurosawa" also has the additional association with Akira Kurosawa, the famous Japanese film director, a fitting last name for a girl who has become famous online for her talent.
* NoSocialSkills: And as the "dead blog" reveals, this is something Kiriko regrets and would have tried to change if she wasn't murdered.
* SacrificialLamb: Kiriko doesn't appear to have a mean bone in her body, but to drive it home that AnyoneCanDie, she's the first murder victim.
* ShrinkingViolet: Kiriko has an incredibly hard time reaching out to others, and prefers to keep by herself. The "dead blog" reveals that Kiriko actually regrets this, and would have liked to finally reach out to others if she hadn't been killed first.
* SkewedPriorities: And she's very aware of this- upon Nakunaru's arrival to the afterlife, Kiriko realises she should be showing the recently dead a little more respect, but she's more concerned with why he removed her glasses from her body.
* TomatoInTheMirror: At first she doesn't realise that the dead body on the floor is ''her'' dead body, crying as she's convinced she's woken up at the scene of a murder. Monomi has to confirm that yes, the body under Kiriko's feet is hers.

When she was around 15 years old, still a farmer working on her family’s land, there was a sudden decline in the number of guards and security. There were frequent crimes and robberies, and people stayed indoors out of fear. Jobs as mercenaries opened up since they so desperately needed them, and large amounts of money was offered for anyone who took the job. Not many people accepted this dangerous job except the extremely poor. But Lottie saw this as an opportunity and seized it immediately, feeling that money was the important thing. Her parents encouraged her.
Even with only a few weeks’ worth of training compared to the usual month’s length, the girl excelled at what she was taught. She was a natural born fighter. Strong, confident, and quick to follow after her instructors. What she lacked in mathematics and sciences she made up for with athletic ability. Then the time came for fighting the gang of bandits— they predicted the time of the next attack and prepared their mercenaries. None were willing to be the first to intercept them and fight on the front lines, but Lottie volunteered immediately.
Lottie Yukimura became the hero of the countryside. There was such a frenzy that she was quickly noticed and became the target of newspapers and reporters in the cities. When Lottie received an invitation to Hope’s Peak, there was no way she could refuse.

Although not doing stellarly in social interaction due to his disposition, he was always a gifted student with a plenty lot of optimism and dedication. Since a tender age, he was convinced in entering medicine school, thinking very seriously and writing a whole plan for it. He was aiming to be a surgeon in his starts, but after his little sister’s adoption ( and realizing after a quite tragic accident with an Operation boardgame that surgery just wasn’t his thing ), he realized that that the job was not what he was meant to be. On the other hand, he was quite curiously gifted with children younger than him- which is weird, considering how he treats people his age and older- and led him to realize; his title in life was to be a paediatrician.

After quite some hard work through his months and natural skills, he achieved his dream much earlier than originally planned. Now, he was not only proud with himself, everyone was too- a fourteen year old globe-famous paediatrician, perhaps a genius- he was ready to move on his short life and settled down in Japan after his life in Norway, for job opportunities. After some years of working with very high pay, he achieved the pristine white card entitled ‘Hope’s Peak’ along light receipts and letters from his parents.

He's voted as the culprit in chapter 2's trial, but Monobear confirms that Lukas didn't do it. Lukas isn't executed, though, since Monobear executes a random classmate instead. However, Lukas murders Miwa in chapter 4, but the class correctly figures out it was him, and this time he's executed.

The son of a prodigious baseball player, Masayoshi’s favorite part of each game was when the ōendan for the team would perform their cheers. He began to memorize each cheer and acrobatic performance, to the point he could recite and reenact each by heart. Upon entering high school, he discovered that his school had their own ōenbu and signed up. Despite his gentle nature, Masayoshi proved to have the fighting spirit and strong presence required for an ōendan, quickly making his way to captain and gaining popularity for his ōenbu and himself.

Even with taiko drums and the sound of the crowd cheering along, Masayoshi is able to get his voice projected through the area. He is also very articulate, which helps the crowd understand his cheers clearly. Masayoshi writes the cheers for his ōenbu and can adjust them depending on the team they’re playing against. His wording is very careful to avoid fights breaking out, yet he’s still able to keep the competitive fun spirit that ōendan cheers are known for. Despite his tall stature, Masayoshi’s movements are never stiff and have a natural flow to them. He’s always in sync with his team members and often leads and choreographs their routines. His ōenbu is known for their unique routines, never using the exact same movements and always providing excitement for the crowd.

Upon being accepted into Hope’s Peak, Masayoshi didn’t want to go since he was so connected to his ōenbu. They encouraged him to go for it, and Masayoshi eventually complied. He misses them dearly but keeps in contact with them often.

** When chapter 2's motive is revealed to be a threat to execute two innocent people unless a murder occurs, Masayoshi attempts to volunteer to be one of the "innocently executed", and in fact, he volunteers to be executed ''twice'' so nobody will have to murder anyone. Monobear tells Masayoshi that he's busy, so Masayoshi should leave his "bullshit" for after the beep.
** When the class mistrials, he volunteers to be the random execution, but Monobear picks someone else.
** He volunteers again in chapter 5, when Monobear threatens to start torturing random students to death. Masayoshi ''demands'' that Monobear choose him to be tortured as the public example, since Masayoshi will never give in to Monobear. It doesn't work; Monobear finds Masayoshi's "self-deprecation" unbearable so Monobear decides to make sure it's anyone ''but'' Masayoshi.

However, they still keep tabs as if they have eyes on the back of their heads, and were very strict with her studies and career choices. She was very accepting of her fate, and didn't go against her parent's wishes or demands. They wanted her to become an actuary as well, to keep going the family business, and she happily complied.

Learning all the techniques from her fathers, she managed to create a big name for herself. Mayoi is extremely skilled at making predictions and using those predictions to create present money values, which got her many jobs with companies around the world who seek insurance. She majors in both traditional employment and non-traditional employment, but is much more used to traditional employments.

She also makes sure to take risks and using it to her advantage, money wise and life wise. Actuaries are all about risk taking and making profit out of it, which she has clearly mastered. Anything insurance wise, she can do.

Unfortunately, while the class voted for Lukas in chapter 2's trial, Lukas didn't do it--and instead of executing Lukas, Monobear executes a random classmate instead. Mayoi is the one he picks, so Mayoi is executed in chapter 2.
----
%%* BigSisterInstinct: With those who are less fortunate than her, of course.
%%* BigFancyHouse
* BloodFromTheMouth: After her execution is over, Mayoi falls to the floor coughing up blood before finally expiring.
* CigaretteOfAnxiety: Lights up after waking up in the afterlife and musing on how ''stressed'' and in ''pain'' she was and is.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Mayoi is chosen at random to be executed when the class mistrials in chapter 2. Two gray figures are holding Mayoi prisoner in a museum in front of a painting of a white emperor butterfly. The figures begin throwing knives at the painting, and every time they hit the butterfly, something invisible slices up Mayoi's insides. The final knife goes through the butterfly's heart, and Mayoi's heart is also stabbed by something invisible. Mayoi keels over, coughing up blood, and finally dying.
* FamilyBusiness: Mayoi was born into a whole family of actuaries.
* FollowInMyFootsteps: Mayoi's parents insisted that she do this, and Mayoi accepted.
* ForcefulKiss: Grabs Nakunaru upon his arrival to the afterlife and performs this. He's not happy about it.
%%* FriendToAllChildren
%%* LonelyRichKid
* MiscarriageOfJustice: Chosen at random to be executed after the chapter 2 mistrial.
* TheNicknamer: As the "dead blog" reveals, Mayoi sometimes affectionately refers to Nakunaru as her "son". They are not related; rather, Mayoi and Nakunaru are friends and it is a term of affection Mayoi uses for him.
* NonIdleRich: Mayoi was born into a family of wealthy actuaries, but rather than being idle, Mayoi has become a Super-High-School-Level-talented actuary herself.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Upon waking up in the afterlife after her wrongful execution, Mayoi's first course of action is an internal monologue about her classmates and how it's their fault that she's dead and in pain, that they all deserve to die, and how 'NO-ONE FUCKING KNEW' about how painful her execution was.
* SacrificialLamb: The first victim of a mistrial, executed after the students failed to pinpoint the correct culprit in chapter two.
* TaughtByTelevision: On her free time, she would spend it all by watching T.V. She wasn't allowed to have any other social relationships, so she would only imagine them to be exactly how it is on those television series!
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: As a few classmates muse after Mayoi is wrongfully executed, Mayoi did absolutely nothing wrong and was a good and innocent girl.
%%* TrueBlueFemininity: Mayoi's outfit includes a blue shirt.

!!Minatsuki Amagi
!!!SHSL Sukeban
[[quoteright:220:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/minatsuki_5540.png]]

Have you heard of The Cyanide Rabbits? A fearsome girl gang with members spread all over Tokyo, part of the threat coming from being unable to detect their appearances — they all look like ordinary high school girls. Don’t let their looks fool you, however — they’re all quite tough. The head honcho herself, Minatsuki Amagi, is a woman of fearsome presence in spite of her small stature, with a powerful temper and a large chip on her shoulder. Y’know, in spite of being the size of a small child.

Minatsuki is one of five students 'woken up late' and introduced in chapter 5. Minatsuki is killed by blood loss from non-lethal shot-at wounds at the beginning of chapter 8 as one of two victims, killed for breaking the rules imposed at the time.
----
* BunniesForCuteness: She has a bunny shaped hairclip.
* CoolMask: The lower part of Minatsuki's face is covered by a gray mask. One of Minatsuki's posts even jokes about it in the narration:
-->"She stared at the astrologist from her podium, arms crossed, a frown not so visible on her face. Y’know, lower half of it constantly covered up and all."
* DiesWideOpen: Her death report at the beginning of chapter 8 describes her body as looking "shocked and horrified".
* EvenEvilHasStandards: She finds Monobear killing Monomi for kicks in chapter 5 to be "cruel" and "disgusting".
* GirlyBruiser: Though the 'girly' part applies more to her interests than her personality.
* HairTriggerTemper: She wants to try and control it, but isn't doing such a good job at it.
* InnocentBlueEyes: Subverted. Her eyes are a very soft shade of blue, but her SHSL talent is "Sukeban", or "delinquent girl."
%%* JapaneseDelinquent: Super high school level.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Minatsuki's SHSL talent at being a Sukeban sometimes requires her to be a jerk. But she has a heart of gold, as demonstrated when she finds Monobear cruel and disgusting.
* MeaningfulName: "Minatsuki" means "water month", and "Amagi" means raincoat; the "rain" theme of her full name matches the light blue of her dress and her eyes.
%%* OlderThanTheyLook
* OneSteveLimit: Subverted in the case of her SHSL talent; she shares the title of SHSL Sukeban with Ryouko.
%%* PintSizedPowerhouse: 'Pint' being 4'6.
%%* SirSwearsALot
%%* TrueBlueFemininity: She's wearing a blue outfit.

!!Miwa Miyagi
!!!SHSL Lolita Model
[[quoteright:163:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miwa_miyagi_6798.png]]

Miwa Miyagi had always been a brat. It’s just who she was. But even though she was a brat, she was immeasurably cute and rich, so she always had people lining up at the doors for a chance to be her friend. But alas, she would rather be away from all those peasants and continue to lead her passionless life. That was before she found Lolita fashion. That very fashion helped shape her into the confident princess she is today. She went to a BTSSB tea party and not only did she win ‘Best Dressed’, their representatives even scouted her to be a Lolita Model for the brand. She became the new face of Baby and even though she’s only 16, she is one of the most wanted Lolita Models.

Miwa's the chapter 4 murder victim; she's discovered tied to a chair with a burlap sack over her head and her heart is found outside her chest. Her file lists her as having died from blood loss.
----
* AccidentalKiss: After chapter 3's trial ends, Mikazuki jumps forward to hug Miwa, but their lips touch by accident. This prompts Miwa to start crying, because she wanted her first kiss to be against the setting sun.
%%* AlliterativeName
* AllWomenLoveShoes: But only tea party shoes, not "ugly ass sneakers". However, just to screw with the people she thinks of as "dense ratfaces", during chapter 3's trial, she intentionally tries the ugly sneakers on her own feet, and they're a perfect match.
* BitchAlert: Don't let her cute looks and 'kawaii' internet persona fool you! She's a stone-cold bitch at heart.
* BrattyHalfPint: 160 cm of pure terror.
* CrocodileTears: Can cry on command. However, her tears during chapter 3's trial are real.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: But not by execution. She's murdered in a cruel and unusual way, tied to a chair with a burlap sack over her head, and her heart is found outside her chest; she dies from blood loss.
* DramaQueen: Has really fucked up priorities and freaks out over small things.
* DeliberatelyCuteChild: Pretends to be 'cutesy' and 'kawaii'.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Miwa's a brat, but when the first culprit is revealed, even Miwa thinks they did something disgusting.
%%* FaceFramedInShadow: Literally one of her sprites.
* ForTheEvulz: Miwa confesses to being chapter 3's culprit, just to "screw with you dense ratfaces", but when this puts her only friend Mikazuki in danger of being accused instead, Miwa stops claiming to be the killer and starts crying, saying she didn't do it, but neither did her friend Mikazuki.
* HatesBeingTouched: Absolutely hates being touched or anything of the sort.
* {{Jerkass}}: Is a [[ManipulativeBitch huge bitch.]]
%%* KillTheCutie: The cutie part being appearance-wise, however.
* MeaningfulName: There are multiple ways her first name "Miwa" can be written using kanji, but a few of those ways include the Japanese character for "beauty", which is a fitting name for a model of any specialty.
* MenAreTheExpendableGender: Minor example, but Miwa's first post in chapter 3's trial is to express how glad she is that "someone killed a boy this time", so maybe she'll honor the class with what she knows (or maybe not).
* NoodleIncident: After chapter 4's motive turns out the lights, Miwa starts crying and thinks about the last time she felt scared, alone, and betrayed, and she remembers someone named Hiroko. Hiroko's identity and role in Miwa's life wasn't revealed until much later: Hiroko was Miwa's first love, or she would have been had she accepted Miwa's confession. Instead, Hiroko angrily rejected Miwa's confession on the grounds that Miwa was a horrible brat. Then Hiroko called in her friends so all of them could beat Miwa up, but Miwa was able to fight them off. Miwa was crying during chapter 4 not because she remembered the beating but because she was remembering Hiroko rejecting her confession and making her feel alone.
%%* NotSoWeak: She's in a gang for goodness sakes!
* PetTheDog: She's usually bratty, but there's a few of her classmates she likes. She approves of Aimé dismantling gender roles, her Relationships page on her personal blog calls Yasu "Fumio-nii-chan", she thinks Hirashi is "Okay", she got upset at Kiriko's death, she's best friends with Mikazuki, and she thinks Ryouko is "fucking radical".
* PleaseIWillDoAnything: In her first few moments in the afterlife, Miwa begs to be taken back to the land of the living, saying she'll do anything to see her family, friends, and 'her' again.
* SmokingIsCool: Despite her cutesy persona, she smokes a lot.
* SourPrudes: Absolutely hates romance and sexual endeavors, to the point where she gets disgusted if someone even mentions it. She warms up to Mikazuki enough to make an exception, though; according to Miwa's player, the reason Miwa's murderer was able to get her alone was because Miwa was expecting Mikazuki to come and confess to her.
* SpitefulSpit: Miwa spits at the first culprit after their reveal.
* SweetTooth: For macaroons and French pastries.
* TearsOfRemorse:
** In chapter 3's trial, after realizing that her screwing around almost caused the class to vote for Mikazuki, her only friend.
** After she gets her first kiss by ''accident'', instead of against the setting sun.
** When chapter 4's motive turns off the lights and subtly threatens to have monsters close in on everyone.
** After waking up in the afterlife.
* ThirdPersonPerson: She only speaks in third person when she's trying to be overly cutesy.

!!Nakunaru Kieru
!!!SHSL Illusionist
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/naknaktropeww_989.png]]

Basically raised on the streets, Nakunaru has dealt with his fair share of tough times and days on end without eating, but that never stopped him from doing what he loved the most. All his life he practiced his illusions and magic tricks even when his parents didn't approve which caused him to run away. The streets are his home now, as long as he has a place to keep his head dry at night he's happy with his life.

What does he do now a days? Why, he runs around the world using his magic to scam the rich and the proper out of their money and objects...boy would his parents be proud. He truly became the scamming 'doctor' they wanted him to be...

Nakunaru becomes the second of two murder victims in chapter 5, killed by Toru with blunt force trauma
----
* AffectionateNickname: As the "dead blog" reveals, Nakunaru is sometimes addressed affectionately by Mayoi as her "son". They are not actually related; this is a term of affection on Mayoi's part since they're friends.
%%* ConsummateLiar
* CoolDownHug: Gives one to Ginji in the afterlife, as the other male sits there terrifed of ghosts from his past showing up.
* CovertPervert: At the beginning of chapter 5, Nakunaru wins two dakimakuras from the Monomachine, one of Mayoi and one of Ginji. Nakunaru responds by calling Monobear a disgusting piece of shit bear, but upon returning to his room, he only throws Mayoi's dakimakura against the wall. He keeps Ginji's; even the narration of his own post says, "Gross you fucking piece of shit."
%%* CurtainsMatchTheWindow
* DiesWideOpen: Not seen as his face is covered with a book, but underneath the covering is a 'shocked expression'.
* FlippingTheBird:
** To Haruka in chapter 3's trial.
** And again to both Haruka ''and'' Honoka after they defend Naohiro.
* GentlemanThief: He only steals the jewels of ladies and wallets of men in the classiest of manner. Give a little bit of sweet talk and their watches practically fall into your hands.
* GroinAttack: On the receiving end of one from Ryouko in the third trial.
* HatesBeingTouched: He tries his best to keep all physical contact with others to a minimum. He won't even touch someone's hand, unless it involves taking a diamond ring.
* IHaveManyNames: He never usually gives people his real name, preferring to ask them to pick a card from a pack with each card having a different alias on. He does this with his talent too, leading to strange combinations such as Mimu Ryoushu, SHSL ''Neck Model''. He even lies about his talent during the chapter one trial when people are introducing themselves and their talents to determine which most involve physical strength. He doesn't make everyone play his card game, rather, straight up introduces himself with the ridiculous 'talent' of SHSL ''Social Outcast Messiah''.
* MeaningfulName: "Nakunaru" can mean to disappear, and "Kieru" can mean to vanish, fitting for an illusionist.
%%* TheNicknamer: Towards everyone except Ginji.
* NoSell: Nakunaru isn't affected by chapter 3's motive, which is informing everyone that their families are missing. Nakunaru just says "good riddance" about his family, and says if anything, he'll ''benefit'' from this once he gets out of here.
* OfficialCouple: With Ginji. Unfortunately, this is cut short when Nakunaru is murdered in chapter five, though Ginji is murdered not long after, making them TogetherInDeath.
* PetTheDog: During chapter 1's trial, he tries to persuade Ginji not to sacrifice himself.
* SatisfiedStreetRat: He's happy as long as he can keep his head dry at night.
* SelfProclaimedLiar: Though he always boasts about lying and being a fake...you might never know when he's actually being truthful because of it? Is he giving helpful advice or trying to lead you astray? It's hard to tell...
* ShoutOut: To Makoto Naegi of ''VisualNovel/DanganronpaTriggerHappyHavoc'' in chapter 4's trial, when he has a take-off of Naegi's "You've got that wrong" artwork.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: He at first seems fine with Heather's execution, even making a snarky comment about her burning in hell... and then fire ''actually'' becomes involved, and he drops that manner entirely.

!!Nami Kaito
!!!SHSL Meteorologist
[[quoteright:226:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_inline_n6kihdb8b11se5oo4_4738.png]]

Nami Kaito isn’t like those other weathermen. For one, she doesn’t stand in front of a camera in a suit and point at a green screen, but she also doesn’t make up her forecasts—when you hear it from her, you know it’s true. After a summertime storm-chasing road trip at age ten (sponsored by her caring—albeit daredevil—uncle and supported by her older sister), Nami became enthralled with the pretty colors, lively winds, and crazy sounds she’d experienced. She chose tornadoes as a subject for a school project that year, and discovered the world of meteorology (that sounds much more exciting to her than it does to most).

While forecasting for Kyoto is her main job, Nami’s website has become a hit with the international crowd, and she’s become accustomed to posting worldwide weather trends and forecasts, including her famed “Storm of the Week” posts. The number of storms, droughts, and floods she has predicted with on-the-dot accuracy impressed Hope’s Peak enough to offer her a spot at their academy, and the number of radar and Doppler systems the school’s science department has convinced her to come.

Survives to endgame.
----
* AscendedFangirl: Nami became enthralled with the weather after a storm-chasing road trip, and went on to become a SHSL Meteorologist.
* ChallengeSeeker: A very mild example, but in the third dresser of Nami's dorm, she has a photo of a storm with lots of lightning, on the back of which she wrote that this was the "best part of the trip", and her uncle rocks!
* ConstantlyCurious: According to her "Personality" on her personal blog, if someone or something they’re doing catches her attention, she’ll usually come up and ask them about it. Her curiosity tends to get the best of her.
* CoolShades: She has a pair of purple sunglasses that she normally wears on top of her head.
* FaceFramedInShadow: Upon discovering Haruka's body in chapter 7, since Haruka the only person who considered Nami a friend.
* {{Fanservice}}: When Akemi hosts a pool party, Nami shows up wearing black swimming shorts over a red two-piece bikini.
* ItsAllMyFault: Feels this way after she isn't able to protect Haruka from being killed in chapter 7 or discover who Haruka's murderer is, even though Haruka was Nami's one opportunity for companionship.
* MeaningfulName: Her first name "Nami" means "wave", and her last name "Kaito" means "kite".
* NoodleIncident: When chapter 3's motive, a threat that everyone's families are missing, is announced, Nami briefly becomes worried that "Hana's gang violence" may have caught up with Nami's sister, but she then dismisses this as being too long ago and her sister is always careful. It has not yet been revealed who Hana is or why her gang violence "would catch up" to Nami's sister or how her sister being careful would keep that at bay.
* PrecisionFStrike: After the events of chapter 7's trial:
-->'''Nami:''' M-mastermind…you…you need to watch out…! I will not let a…a <shit stain>…like you win, ever!
* PrimAndProperBun: She has the bun, but not quite the personality normally associated with this trope.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Nami is wearing purple in her new sprites, and she's powerful enough to become Super High-School Level at being a meteorologist.
* ShoutOut: In Nami's dorm, in addition to books on the universe and on meteorology, she has a [[Literature/TheMagicSchoolBus Magic School Bus]] book. She also has a poster of ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight''.
%%* TenderTears: After chapter 7 ends in a mistrial.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: She has a shoujo manga in her room with a flower pink cover. The narration notes, "Really? You wouldn’t have pegged her as that type of person."
%%* TrueBlueFemininity: In her first outfit, but recently Nami has switched to a purple outfit.
* WillNotTellALie: Refuses to make up forecasts.

!!Naohiro Fujiwara
!!!SHSL Cosmetologist
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/for_tvtropes_186.png]]

Born to a model of a mother and manager of a father, Naohiro was involved in the world of the beauty industry since he was young. He first began working with makeup at eight, when he would practice on his younger sister in his free time. After getting even more practice with his mother’s cosmetologists over the years, he eventually went to cosmetology school at 15, graduating with a proper cosmetology license at 17. From then on, he would work with many models and actors, making them look their best for whatever audience or camera they would be showcased for. His name has become particularly renowned throughout international beauty pageants, where he has played a significant role with the cosmetology team for those participating.

He's chapter 3's culprit; he bludgeons Andy to death with a pot after a strangling attempt failed. However, the class correctly manages to figure out it was him.
----
* AfraidOfBlood: In his career, blood means that he's messing up ''really'' bad, so he's learned to react strongly whenever he sees it. However, it's eventually grown to the point where it even makes him feel weak if he sees it.
%% Doesn't explain what the reaction is. * BerserkButton: To implications of femininity or girliness.
%%* BlueWithShock: After seeing Kiriko's body.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: He's chapter 3's culprit, but is caught and executed. Naohiro is strapped to a chair in front of a table full of cosmetics. Monobear first uses the cosmetics to do an intentionally poor make-up job on Naohiro's face, and then starts spraying him with perfume. Only it's not really perfume--it's a deadly poisonous gas, and Monobear sprays Naohiro with ''five entire bottles'' of it, finally killing Naohiro with the fifth.
* ExpressiveHair: Depending on how he's feeling, it'll curl up when happy, deflate when sad, and even turn into a ''heart'' when he's blushing.
* {{Fainting}}:
** After seeing Kiriko's body. He recovers quickly afterwards, but he refuses to return to the room where she was found.
** He faints again after seeing the results of Ginji's gun malfunction and Mayoi's execution.
** He faints again after seeing Andy Dime's body in chapter 3, since it has so much "blood" all over it. Despite having been the one to kill Andy, the crime scene was tampered with by Miwa with blood-colored paint, and Naohiro is led to believe the body is covered with blood, causing him to faint at the sight of his own victim.
* ForeignCussWord: Comes out with "Sólo quiero volver a mi habitación y masturbarse ya.” in the middle of the chapter two trial. It's seemingly random until the next post stated that he had a good reason for saying something so outlandish- he wanted to see if anyone reacted, therefore identifying themselves as a possible culprit due to the possibly fake suicide note written in Spanish.
* HatesBeingTouched: Well, he doesn't really ''hate'' it. He's simply unused to it, and it gets him nervous.
* HeightAngst: Though he's not too short, he's still embarrassed by how short he is compared to many of his classmates, and is reluctant to speak with anyone taller than him.
* HiddenDepths: According to Naohiro's player's "Headcanons" tag, in addition to his cosmetology skills, Naohiro also has impeccably neat handwriting and penmanship.
* IWantToBeARealMan: Being a male cosmetologist, Naohiro has dealt with quite a bit of ridicule due to being a guy interested in makeup and hair care. This has led to him constantly wanting to prove that he's tough and manly.
%%* IdiotHair
* InTouchWithHisFeminineSide: Only when it comes to cosmetology, though.
%%* LonelyRichKid
* {{Mangst}}: Falls into a bit of this after Heather's execution. He's been hesitant to leave his room and speak with others since.
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: Mikazuki and Naohiro, talent-wise. While being a rapper is a predominately male talent, a cosmetologist is a predominately female talent.
* MeaningfulName: Naohiro's last name, "Fujiwara", means "wisteria field". A wisteria is a type of flowering plant, making it a fitting last name for a cosmetologist who helps develop the flowering beauty of others.
* NiceGuy: Would prefer to get along with others rather than start a fight, and is usually polite and respectful to his fellow classmates. At least, until they push him over the edge for one reason or another. Subverted when it turns out he's the chapter 3 culprit, although he did it because chapter 3's motive said everyone's families were missing.
* NoSocialSkills: Somewhat. He's been homeschooled most of his life by private tutors, and so he isn't the best at socializing with others. He spent two years in cosmetology school, where he learned how to socialize a little better, but even now he's still a bit socially awkward at times.
%%* PurpleIsPowerful
* RealMenCook: He's not the best, but as he concerns himself quite a lot with health, since it can effect someone's skin and hair, he also concerns himself with proper dieting. However, as he's a cosmetologist and not a dietician, he's not an expert on proper eating, even if he knows a lot about it.
%%* RealMenDontCry
* RealMenHateAffection: He hates crying or showing any sort of strong emotion, since he thinks that's a girly thing to do.
%%* RealMenWearPink
* TheScream: When introducing himself to everyone in the first trial, he sees Masayoshi. Who's completely naked. He doesn't react well.
* SuddenlyShouting: On his "Relationships" page on his personal blog, most of Nao's descriptions of his classmates are written in a quiet tone. When he gets to Masayoshi, he suddenly shouts, "IT WASN'T NECESSARY TO STRIP THAT FAR!"
* TakeMeInstead: A successful example. Haruka tries to cover for him during chapter 3, but Naohiro doesn't want Haruka to die, so he finally reveals the scratches on the back of his hands and reveals he's the real murderer, so Haruka doesn't have to die.
%%* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Strawberries.
* YellowEyesOfSneakiness: Averted so far; he has yellow eyes, but he hasn't done anything to seem sneaky. Finally the trope is played straight in chapter 3, because he does something sneaky--he murders Andy.

!!Nikki Hera
!!!SHSL Astrology Expert
[[quoteright:220:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nikki_941.png]]

They’re quite tired, spending their nights studying alone and improving their knowledge on astrology and the differents aspects. Nikki also sometimes suffers from joint pain due to their gigantism.

They're the culprit of chapter six, executed for the murder of Akemi.
----
%%* {{Astrologer}}: Nikki's SHSL talent.
* ConditionedToAcceptHorror: Not Nikki, but Nikki notices this about their classmates. As they point out to their classmates in chapter 6:
-->"I really don’t get how you guys are so used to this cycle by now… Except for one person right now… ”You win.” Heh… Maybe all of you… are just as sorrowful as her… Yet, you all have different ways to deal with it…"
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: They're chapter 6's culprit, but Nikki decides to confess to the murder so the class executes the right person. Monobear places Nikki in a garden with a campfire and leaves a magazine for them to read, complete with horoscope section. Nikki looks up their own sign, "Scorpio," and reads that a series of bad luck incidents will cause their death. Two such incidents insure their fate: first, the campfire spreads out of control and starts setting everything else on fire, including Nikki's shoes. So they run to a nearby lake and jump in it to put the fire out. Second, the "lake" is made not of water, but of ''oil'', which ignites the flames on their shoes and sets the whole lake on fire, burning Nikki to death.
%%* FaceFramedInShadow: On some of Nikki's sprites, when they're feeling afraid.
* HopeSpot: Presented to them in their execution: they catch sight of a lake after their feet are set on fire and run towards it, only for it to be filled with ''oil''.
%%* KillItWithFire: How they're executed.
* MeaningfulName: "Hera" is the name of the goddess of marriage and childbirth in Greek mythology. This is a fitting name for a person whose SHSL talent concerns the influence of the signs a person was born under; also, astrology was introduced to Greece after Alexander the Great conquered Asia, and the "zodiac" of Greece influenced astrology from then onward.
* TheQuietOne: They choose to remain quiet during chapter 6's trial, since in their opinion they had suggested a wrong theory last time. The first time they speak during chapter 6's trial, it's to confirm that they don't know either what room number they were assigned or who their roommate is. Potentially invoked deliberately; Nikki was that chapter's culprit.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: Upon learning of Monobear's mutual killing game, Nikki decides that they're "outtie" and attempt to leave for their dorm. They then remember that they don't know where the dorms are.
* WesternZodiac: An important part of astrology, Nikki Hera's SHSL talent. We even learn Nikki's sign, "Scorpio", during their execution.

!!Oolong Giichi
!!!SHSL Gardener
[[quoteright:283:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oolong_gichi_9179.png]]

Oolong took interest in gardening and planting from his mother who did it as a hobby, He helped her around the garden. Day after day for 10 years, His mother eventually got bed ridden in the hospital for a couple of weeks. When he heard the news it depressed him, constantly calling up about her and visiting her. The garden was looking worse and worse so he decided for the day she comes home he’ll redo the garden and surprise her. With rows of flowers, and nicely cut grass. There was a small patch of tomatoes and a Large patch of her favorite flowers. It was livlier than it ever was in the span of 2 days. The neigbors saw their lovely garden and thought it was so fascinating they called him to do theirs. More and more calls, He eventually got known enough to do the town’s park gardening work, The mayor’s backyard and the hospital his mother was at. His mother was so proud when he got called to go to Hope’s peak academy when his gardening work was put in magazines and newspaper articles for being so unique it was seen as artwork, This wouldn’t have happened without his mother’s support.

He is killed in chapter three for breaking an unspecified rule, seemingly stabbed and slashed by several knives.
----
* GreenThumb: He's SHSL-talented at being a gardener.
* InsignificantLittleBluePlanet: Upon discovering that everyone has been sent into space, it scares him, since the vastness of space he can see out the window makes him feel small "for once in his life."
* KilledOffScreen: He's killed in chapter 3 for breaking a rule, but out-of-character, the mods made a public service announcement that the players' characters "in-universe" are not yet actually supposed to know what's happened to Oolong. However, during chapter 3's trial, Ryouko manages to figure out "in-universe" that something's wrong, because there's only one person in the center of the trial when there should be two, so someone's missing besides the victim! Then Max confirms that Oolong is the one missing, and finally Aimé gets Monobear to confirm that Oolong is dead because he made Monobear angry, so now the characters know "in-universe" what happened.
* MommasBoy: It was for his mother that Oolong first developed his SHSL talent, and then the neighbors caught on that there was an amazing gardener in their midst.
* NoodleIncident: It's not revealed what rule Oolong broke causing Monobear to kill him. Even when Monobear finally confirms Oolong is dead, all Monobear will confirm is that Oolong made Monobear angry.
%%* RealMenWearPink: And are talented gardeners.
* SoProudOfYou: How Oolong's mother feels about her son and his newsworthy gardening abilities.

!!Ryouko Ishikawa
!!!SHSL Sukeban
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryoukotvtropes_8929.png]]

Ishikawa is most well-known as the infamous leader of the girl gang, The Spade Crusaders. The gang covers quite a lot illegal activity, but it was all founded on Ishikawa’s own actions. She was a rebellious young girl who despised consumerism. She thought it damaged people’s mentalities and self-esteem too much, and she thought it was too corrupt for her to just sit idly. The meek girl took all of her rage at the system by first making an almost poetic speech. She managed to inspire other girls to admire her and follow her ideals. It lead to the almost accidental creation of the girl gang that became diverse and broad across the nation. Some of her members were smarter and kept a typical schoolgirl-look whilst others would look outrageous and follow after previous known sukebans in appearance. Nevertheless, with the wide range of member types, the gang ended up committing illicit activities nationwide. While Ishikawa usually could not keep an iron grip, it only served to strengthen the fame of the gang. Ishikawa would steal from corporations, leak business plans, and ruin advertisements in the name of her beliefs and gang. The gang almost always left a calling card— a spade at the scene they were last. Ishikawa became the poster-girl for her gang, and it helped Hopes Peak recognize her and send an invitation.

WordOfGod confirmed her to be chapter eight's killer, murdering both Hirashi and Yasu. Survives to endgame.
----
* ApologeticAttacker: Screaming the following during chapter three's trial as she knees Nakunaru.
->'''Ryouko:''' FORGIVE ME PLEASE…!!!
* ExpressiveHair: In one of Ryouko's sprites, her side ponytail sticks straight up.
%%* GirlyBruiser
* GroinAttack: To Nakunaru, to get the class's attention in chapter 3's trial so she can tell them someone's missing that's not the murder victim.
* JustLikeRobinHood: Played with. She doesn't exactly "steal from the rich to give to the poor", but her thefts from corporations and leaking of their business plans are intended to help the poor anyway, but through a different route (by attacking the materialist mentality that ruins people's self-esteem). However, Ryouko has an ulterior motive in addition to the selfless one: Ryouko's albinism "caused her to be more fearful about sunlight exposure than was necessary", and eventually Ryouko grew jealous of the girls in advertisements who could confidently show off a lot more skin.
* KarmaHoudini: She gets away with killing Yasu and Hirashi though no MiscarriageOfJustice occurs like the previous mistrials; the class became more focused on using what they knew at that stage to find the mastermind among them.
* LeaveNoWitnesses: Hirashi was not the intended victim, but in fact spotted Ryouko covered in blood and holding a weapon, so she had no choice but to kill him.
%%* LuminescentBlush: As seen in a couple of her sprites.
* NoIndoorVoice: Occasionally in trials, and when placing her mastermind vote.
-->'''Ryouko:''' I... um... LET A PITEOUS FOOL SUCH AS I CAST MY FINAL DAMNING VOTE UPON TOKIE, PLACING AN ACCUSING FINGER AT HER FELL BODY TO STATE THAT SHE IS THE WRETCHED MASTERMIND BEHIND THESE SINISTER EVENTS AND THAT I YEARN TO SEE HER ICHOR STAIN THIS REALM BEFORE WE SEND HER TO THE ABYSS!
* PetTheDog: After Masayoshi faints in reaction to the chapter 4 execution, Ryouko drags Masayoshi's unconscious form to her room so he can rest.
* PinkMeansFeminine: At least clothing-wise; she wears predominantly pink and black, and it's in the style of a "sailor fuku" typical to female students, but her personality is more befitting of a Sukeban.
* PleasePutSomeClothesOn: Has a ''very'' bad reaction to Masayoshi completely stripping in the chapter one trial, screaming at him to put some clothes back on before scrambling to distract herself with an introduction.
* ReluctantWarrior: Physical violence may be used as a last resort, but she typically prefers to do theft or leaking instead in her gang.
* ShoutOut: A recent post of Ryouko's is titled "Following Queen Mab's Guidance". Queen Mab is a fairy, one responsible for bringing dreams, who's alluded to in Shakespeare's ''Theatre/RomeoAndJuliet''.
* ShrinkingViolet: Not shown too excessively, [[InformedAttribute but mentioned in her monologues and her backstory.]]
* TomboyishPonytail: She has a single ponytail off to the side of her head.
* TookALevelInBadass: She used to be a "meek girl", according to her profile, but made an impassioned speech against consumerism and was inspired to rebelliousness ever since.
* TrueCompanions: Eventually Ryouko becomes true companions with Masayoshi, and they become the co-captains of "Team Usami".

!!Shika Sayuri
!!!SHSL Animal Trainer
[[quoteright:220:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shika_2896.png]]

Shika grew up living with her mother, her aunt, and her grandmother; she didn’t know her father during the first few years of her life. She was never good in social situations with other people, but she’s always had a soft spot for animals. She loved to play with the stray cats that would visit outside her house, and one day she thought it would be cool to try training them. It was then that she discovered she had a natural gift when it came to interacting with animals. At the age of eight, she was given her own dog, a shiba inu, and she spent most of her free time training him and teaching him various tricks. When her family found out, they were quite impressed, but Shika always said that it was nothing all that impressive, because she thought little of her talent. It was just a hobby, really, nothing more.

At the age of ten, she ran away with her dog to join the circus. This is perhaps where her most impressive feat took place, when she tamed the white tiger there that was deemed otherwise “untrainable” by the staff. Word of her prowess spread quite a bit, as the circus that she travels with is quite a well-known one, and this probably how she was discovered by Hope’s Peak. As a side note, Shika never harms the animals she trains. She goes against the stereotype stating that circuses abuse their animals, and finds it disgusting.

In chapter 7, the class incorrectly votes for a suicide, so as punishment Monobear decides to execute a random student. Shika Sayuri is the unlucky student chosen to be wrongfully executed.
----
* BearsAreBadNews: Subverted and then played straight. The bears Shika interacted with back at the circus were all very friendly, hence the subversion. Played straight when she finds Monobear "disgusting".
* BerserkButton: As noted in her backstory, she finds people who abuse their animals "disgusting".
* CircusBrat: She fits this particular trope, since she's grown up in a circus, but her personality is not even close to "brat".
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Wrongfully executed after being picked at random in chapter 7 as the result of a mistrial. She's in a circus with an empty audience, when animals appear. Shika uses her crop to try to drive them back, but discovers to her horror that these animals are unfazed by the crop so her SHSL talent of animal taming isn't working. She manages to dodge an attack by a dog, but a tiger knocks her to the floor, and she is soon torn to pieces by all of the animals. Nothing remains of her but a small pool of blood and a broken trainer's crop.
%%* FriendToAllLivingThings: Her SHSL talent.
* MeaningfulName: "Shika" can have several meanings depending on how it's written, but the most fitting meaning in the SHSL Animal Trainer's case is "deer".
* MiscarriageOfJustice: Chapter 7's trial ends with an incorrect suicide vote, so Monobear chooses a student at random to execute instead, and Shika's the unlucky student chosen.
* PrecisionFStrike: Upon learning of Monobear's mutual killing game:
-->'''Shika:''' What kind of fucked person do you have to be to do something like this?
%%* TheRunaway: How she became an animal tamer for the circus.
%%* TrueBlueFemininity: Shika Sayuri's outfit is blue.
* YouthfulFreckles: But they're barely visible; you have to look ''really closely'' at Shika's face to see them.

!!Shinju Shibutani
!!!SHSL Shisho
[[quoteright:157:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shinju_shibutani_1769.png]]

Shinju is sweet and easy to talk to, perfect for customer service. Those traits are probably traits people notice firsthand. She is extremely organized and dislikes when objects are moved out of their proper places, especially if it's her own stuff. Her favourite activities are reading and snacking on sweet things while doing so. Not only does she love reading, but most kinds of sports, if only she could partake in them all.

She was enrolled in Hope’s Peak Academy as a Shisho- Essentially as a librarian. Shisho is, however, the official title for a librarian eligible to manage a public library. Her excellent work to better the school libraries in elementary and junior high schools and a pledge from Japan Library Association itself gave her an exempt to get formal education, despite the status of a shisho can usually be only gotten after reaching university age. Her advice has been sought to better libraries and librarian mindsets all over Japan. All of this made her eligible to get a Super High School Level and nowadays she manages Hope’s Peak Academy’s Library.

Survives to endgame.
----
%%* AlliterativeName
* {{Bookworm}}: As a librarian, she loves books, obviously.
%%* BrainyBrunette: A smart brunette.
* DontYouDarePityMe: Shinju absolutely hates any pity her wheelchair might attract. It's not something to pity, it's just a thing she lives with.
* GoGetterGirl: She works hard for anything she deems worthwhile, partly to prove to other she can do anything she puts her mind to.
%%* HotLibrarian: She is hopelessly oblivious about matters related to romance.
* MeaningfulName: Depending on which characters are used to write it, her first name "Shinju" can mean either "pearl" or can contain the characters for "mind" and "center"; this latter meaning is perfect for a woman whose talent is related to libraries.
* OnlySaneWoman: Shinju sometimes feels this way, since the trials sometimes devolve into shouting matches while Shinju herself tries to maintain a calm demeanor.
* OrangeBlueContrast: Shinju's outfit is orange and blue.
* PleasePutSomeClothesOn: Very politely requests that Akemi gets dressed again in the chapter one trial.
* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack: Shinju does, indeed, wear her school uniform often when one might wear casual clothes and despite now attending Hope's Peak she continues to wear her old uniform, condoning to the TransferStudentUniforms.
* SilkHidingSteel: She always keeps her composure, no matter what, such as in Chapter One when Monokuma calls her a cripple and reveals he broke her old library card.
* SweetTooth: She loves sweet stuff, and it's a shame she has to so closely monitor what she eats.
* WheelchairAntics: Can you pop a wheelie?

!!Spinda Square
!!!SHSL Yo-Yo Champ
[[quoteright:220:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/spinda_880.png]]

Survives to endgame.
----
* AndYouThoughtItWasAGame: Upon learning of Monobear's mutual killing game, Spinda believes he has accidentally wandered onto a horror set and is just seeing really good special effects. So he obligingly says "aaaaaaaaaaah" and wonders if that's good enough. Upon seeing two murder victims in chapter 5, Spinda ''still'' thinks it's a game. He even mistakes the blood for ketchup, since he still thinks people are just having him on. However, at the beginning of chapter 8, it finally sinks in that yes, all these people are really dying. Spinda doesn't take it well.
* CutenessProximity: When meeting all the other students, Spinda's reaction is to grin and say:
-->"AHHHHHHH! Y’all are such tiny tykes! I just want to throw ya in the air and wave ya ‘round like I just don’t care!"
* DarkhorseVictory: Sort of, given that in a mutual killing game, "surviving" is a victory. Spinda was one of five "new students" introduced in chapter 5. However, the other "new students" are killed off or executed, making Spinda the only "newly introduced student" to survive the whole game.
%%* FaceFramedInShadow: At the beginning of chapter 8 after realizing that the mutual killing game is real.
* MundaneUtility: In chapter 6, Spinda wins a rainbow chainsaw and a laser arm from the Monomachine. He decides to, in the words of the post, "slice some bread with said chainsaw and toast it with lasers. How ''fucking'' awesome was that?"
* ScaryTeeth: Spinda has lots of sharp teeth when he grins, a la Souda from ''VisualNovel/Danganronpa2GoodbyeDespair''.
* YellowEyesOfSneakiness: When Spinda opens his eyes, they're yellow. Averted, however, because he doesn't kill anyone.
%%* YouthfulFreckles

!!Tokiko Tokie
!!!SHSL Inventor
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tokikotvtropes_4908.png]]

Gadgets, gizmos and widgets aplenty made this young girl a household name - well, depending on the household. Brilliant at maths and having an uncanny talent for invention, Tokiko was considered a genius from a young age. Skipping two years of school forward, this young smartypants was already designing and building her very first robotic bag carrier while most children her age were struggling through their times tables. While Tokiko is eccentric, and many of her inventions are just as strange as her, she is an unquestioned prodigy so the invitation to Hope’s Peak that came at the end of her second year of highschool came as no surprise. Perhaps what did was her peculiar choice to return to first year, rather than join a third year class and finish her education.

In chapter eight she is discovered as the mastermind, and is executed.
----
* AlliterativeName: Her first name "Tokiko" and last name "Tokie" both begin with "Toki".
* AnswersToTheNameofGod: According to Tokiko's quote on her personal page:
-->"My name is Tokiko Tokie. You could call me either Tokiko or Tokie, if that strikes your fancy, but you could also call me genius or sensei. I answer to both."
%%* BrainyBrunette
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Tokiko is both eccentric and a prodigy.
%%* DeadpanSnarker: Tokiko has very slight shades of this, but is much more polite than most examples of this trope.
* FreeRangeChildren: A very subtle example, but a recent post has revealed that Tokiko's parents weren't around much and were rarely home for dinner, so Tokiko frequently ate frozen, pre-cooked meals, which she has been living on for the better part of her life.
%%* GadgeteerGenius
* GeniusSweetTooth: Averted. She doesn't like sweet stuff at all, and her favourite snacks are vegetable juice and cheese sticks.
* GradeSkipper: Skipped two years of school thanks to her genius.
%%* HeroicBSOD: The combination of chapter 3's culprit killing to protect his family and what chapter 4's motive turns out to be drives Tokiko into this.
* MaddenIntoMisanthropy: Downplayed example, but after Lukas' execution and Masayoshi's fainting, Tokiko advises everyone that it would be wiser not to trust anyone; she certainly isn't planning to.
* PinkMeansFeminine: Much of her outfit is pink, and she has pink eyes.
* ProperLady: Tokiko has slight shades of this. She's polite at ''all'' times. Notably, she remembers her manners so she can greet the new students in chapter 5 even after seeing Monomi killed in front of her.
* TheQuietOne: Tokiko is described by the narration as having a voice that's as childlike as her stature, but also really quiet and monotone.
* ShorterMeansSmarter: Tokiko is a genius, and she's really short and tiny compared to the rest of her classmates. For one example, during chapter 5's murder investigation, Tokiko compares her "tiny baby fist" (in the player's words) to the bruises on the body she's investigating, and the bruises "dwarf" her fist.
* TeenGenius: Started as a BrainyBaby and ChildProdigy. She's already been acknowledged as being among the best minds of her generation.

!!Tomiko "Tomi" Hiko
!!!SHSL Post-Harcore Drummer
[[quoteright:230:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tomiko_9161.png]]

Tomi has always enjoyed music. When she was about two, her parents started taking her to a music class for toddlers, it was the part of her week that she most looked forward to. In school though she was always that kid who would not stop tapping; give her a hard surface and she’d start tapping on it. She’d have her pencils taken if she was doing this while the teacher was talking, but then would just start tapping with her hands. She’s well-known for being kind of stupid, easily confused by large words and quick to do stupid things for petty cash because she really doesn’t have the best common sense. In small doses she’s considered to be quite funny and her behavior is mostly considered endearing. Drummer of Chasing the Stars, a post-hardcore band with a cult following.

Tomi is killed by impalement at the beginning of chapter 8 as one of two victims, and the mods have declared that her death, as well as the death of the other victim, is "not to be investigated".
----
* ACupAngst: She’s usually pretty cool with her body but if someone actually says something negative about her chest - or lack thereof - she does tend to get a little self conscious about it
* AllDrummersAreAnimals: It’s how she got her SHSL, she’s very energetic and entertaining while playing.
* AscendedFangirl: She's just a girl who likes rock music and happened to end up in a band
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: When Aime explains what's going on, he compares the situation to ''Film/BattleRoyale'', and Tomi simply replies that it was a really good movie, her narration points out that that wasn't the point.
* DiesWideOpen: Her death report at the beginning of chapter 8 describes her body as looking "shocked and horrified", and her eyes are open in the artwork.
* DoubleEntendre: She makes not of how her talent is "bangin' 'n shit" and makes note of how she's very good at that. She appears to be completely aware of the double meaning in it.
%%* DumbAndDrummer: She’s pretty stupid.
* FeminineWomenCanCook: In how she's very far from feminine and, in her own words, she "don’ know shit ‘bout cookin’". Along with that she doesn't know how to operate an oven, turning it up all the way and then leaving the door open as she went to find some food to put in there. It's a good thing she didn't end up cooking anything.
%%* FunetikAksent
* GentleGiant: The tallest of the girls yet she's shown no inclination towards violence
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: By a tree, according to the artwork, since Monobear's forbidden the students from investigating further.
* InJoke: After Monokuma broke Monomi she tells him that "...tha’s no’ very punk rock ‘f ya...", a reference to an ''WesternAnimation/AdventureTime'' comic.
* MasterOfTheMixedMessage: She tends to flirt with cute girls out of habit, usually meaning nothing by it and usually doesn’t even notice.
* MeaningfulName: Her last name, Hiko, can mean "boy" or "prince", and a "prince" can refer to an especially admirable girl. Her first name, Tomiko (though she goes by "Tomi"), means either "wealthy child" or "abundant child" or "fortunate child", and she was fortunate enough to discover her talent early, being taken to music classes as a toddler.
* TheNicknamer: As she never got Max's name, she ends up calling them Blushy [=McGee=] in her narration. It's unknown yet if she'll continue using the nickname until she learns their actual name. She also ended up calling Aime "sexy accent guy" as she didn't know his name.
* ObliviousToLove: If you’re coming onto her or trying to flirt you have to be really forward for her to even notice.
%%* OneGenderSchool: She attended one before Hope’s Peak
* PostHardcore: The genre of music that her band plays.
* ProudBeauty: When she tells Aime that he's cute and he replies in kind, she notes in her narration that ''damn'' straight she's cute.
* ReluctantFanserviceGirl: She’s a yuri joke and she fits within the {{Tomboy}} character stereotype yet she refuses to remove her bandeau under any sort of circumstances.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: After finding Ginji's dead body she ended up just saying fuck that shit and leaving.
* ShoutOut: There are references littered in her narration:
** When her narration mentioned Aime, but since she had not asked his name he was referred to as "...the guy with the outrageous accent", which is a reference to the taunting French guard from ''Film/MontyPythonAndTheHolyGrail''.
** She has a little trouble operating the stove and almost starts a fire, her narration makes note of how it's good she hadn't ended up "burning down the base" and then linked to the Music/TalkingHeads song, "Burning Down The House".
** She makes note in her narration of how she can't find her drum kit and may need to end up making a new makeshift one, saying that she might be able to "[tim gunn voice] make it work".
** She ended up pronouncing Aime's last name as Arkham Vault, a reference to ''Franchise/{{Batman}}''.
* SirSwearsALot: Especially shit, which seems to be her favourite word.

!!!SHSL Feline Specialist
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/torutvtropes_5179.png]]

The heir to a home in the countryside, the rather recently matured Toru has become something of a legend with his cat ranch, and with his skills in dealing with felines. His aunt, a zoologist who specialized in the care of ‘big cats’, tried to guide him in becoming a veterinary doctor like herself. Alas, his passions laid within the realm of ordinary house-cats, and his communications with them. He currently has 23 cats in his home, and has written three books regarding how to properly communicate with one’s cat.

He's chapter 5's culprit; he kills Nakunaru with blunt force trauma under the assumption that Nakunaru would've killed him first, but is then surprised by Ginji, so he kills Ginji by shooting him to silence him.
----
* AnimalEyes: Toru's eyes coincidentally resemble the eyes of a cat.
* BerserkButton: Was set off by someone forcefully viewing his empty eye socket.
* CatSmile: Subverted, to an extent, as he has a cleft-lip that makes it looks like he always has a cat smile, but is in fact, hardly ever smiling.
* ClusterFBomb:
** During chapter 3's trial, Toru finally gets fed up with Miwa and yells at her:
--->"If you have the ''fucking'' information you ''fucking asshole'', then give us the ''FUCKING INFORMATION'' about the ''FUCKING SHOES'' you ''FUCKING PRICK!!''"
** Since chapter 3's trial becomes chaotic, Toru becomes frustrated enough that he liberally uses the word "fuck" in several of his other posts.
* CrazyCatLady: He had collected cats before Hope's Peak, gaining twenty-three separate adult cats before receiving his acceptance letter.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: He's chapter 5's culprit, but is caught and executed. A couple of Monobears strap a jetpack and oversized Pop Tart on him and send him careening into space in a parody of the Nyan Cat video. However, Toru's jetpack eventually runs out of fuel and then ''explodes'', taking Toru with it.
%%* FaceFramedInShadow: A few of Toru's sprites.
* FollowInMyFootsteps: His aunt tried to guide Toru to become a veterinarian like herself, but Toru grew more specialized in dealing with ordinary house-cats.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Can be summarized with Marina & the Diamonds lyrics; 'I feel like I'm the worst/So I always act like I'm the best,'.
* KillingInSelfDefense: What Toru believed was about to occur when he ran into Nakunaru in the early morning- as the two disliked each other, he believed Nakunaru was about to kill him and retaliated.
* LeaveNoWitnesses: Ginji becomes Toru's second victim after finding him with Nakunaru's body.
* NowOrNeverKiss: He grabs and kisses Hirashi just before he is executed.
* ParentalSubstitute: Toru was raised by his Aunt Chiyoko, who is his only family.
* ParrotPetPosition: His cat, Cream, is seen on his shoulders in some of his sprites. After Toru's death, Cream has to be taken care of by the other students, and will sometimes even cast a vote. Unlike Toru, Cream survives the game.
%%* PinkGirlBlueBoy: Toru wears predominantly blue and white in his outfit.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Delivers no less than two to Haruka in a short space of time in the chapter three trial: first when she begins accusing Jaz for bringing up something 'completely viable', the second when Haruka begins screaming confessions.
-->'''Toru:''' I hope you rot you vicious, vile woman. I hope you rot.
* YellowEyesOfSneakiness: Toru has yellow eyes, and murders Nakunaru and Ginji in chapter 5.

A born genius, Toshio initially took to studying psychology to be better equipped against the hostile and unforgiving environment he and his mother were in. Self-taught by the age of ten, his career was kickstarted after meeting his foster father who supported him greatly by providing him proper education and providing him all the funds to carry out his experiments. Garnering nationwide attention for discovering a major breakthrough in the research of the ever growing phenomenon of hikikomoris or shut-ins in his blog posts, Toshio attracted the eye of both the government and the Academia, solidifying his status of Super High School Level Experimental Psychologist. His findings have caused a ripple effect in the field of therapy, making the total of Japanese hikikomori have a 20% decrease. Logical, direct and most of all, inquisitive, Toshio became a much sought-after researcher despite his absurdly young age. But upon getting his letter of invitation, he abandoned all prior engagements and confirmed his acceptance, eager to be in an environment where he could learn more.

----
* BigEater: Has a fondness for just about any kind of food.
* {{Expy}}: Of L from ''Manga/DeathNote'', but unlike L, Toshio never dies. He survives the whole game.
* ForScience: In a blink-and-you'll-miss-it-moment during chapter 2's investigation, Toshio briefly muses that he may resort to questionable methods, including electric shocks and sensory deprivation, but not to the point of senseless killing.
* GeniusSweetTooth: Played straight. He eats sugar by the ''jarful''.
* MeaningfulName: His first name, "Toshio", can mean many things, including "sagacious man", a fitting name for a SHSL Experimental Psychologist whose talent requires significant ability in mental discernment and judgment.
* PsychoPsychologist: Shows signs of being one at least. He would stop at nothing to pursue whatever he finds interesting, often times overstepping societal and moral norms.

!!Tyrone "Remix" Myrone
!!!SHSL Remixer
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tyronetvtropes_1769.png]]
Tyrone Remix Myrone, nicknamed T.M. Remix, is a well-known remixer who came from a poor neighborhood. He was around fourteen when he learned to remix his recordings of simple sounds and his own voice. After getting a hang of remixing, he started to record sounds from everywhere he went and then mashing them together, remixing them.

T.M. Remix has high respect for street musicians and always gave money to them when he sees them preforming. In the beginning, he sometimes would begin remixing on the spot where the performer is playing. He was able to attract a horde’s attention and was able to earn money for both the performer and himself. Sooner or later he began to do it frequently. He went around in places and would remix next to the performer using their notes and beats. Every time more and more people would come and watch him and the street musicians, donating money to both musicians. The word about him began to spread; videos of him were posted up on sites.

----
* ClusterFBomb: In chapter 3, while making his way over to the body, Tyrone repeatedly bumps into things, which hurts enough that the narration in the post is liberally sprinkled with the word "fuck".
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: Upon discovering Valentina's body in chapter 2, Tyrone misunderstands and thinks the class has a strawberry smoothie party without him. How could they? Tyrone thought they were ''friends''!
* EruditeStoner: He remains a brilliant, talented, self-made remixer despite this drug habit.
%%* HeroicBSOD: Tyrone is driven into this upon seeing Monomi being killed in chapter 5.
* SelfMadeMan: He grew up poor, but became successful by recording sound from everywhere and then remixing it.
* ShoutOut: During chapter 6's murder investigation, Tyrone sniffs the body, causing Monobear to comment, "Smells like teen spirit." This is a shout-out to "Smells Like Teen Spirit", a song by the American rock band Music/{{Nirvana}} on their album "Nevermind."
* TheStoner: Downplayed example and it's not a central point of his character, but sometimes he looks for weed when he's stressed.
%%* TrueCompanions: Tyrone becomes this with Lottie.
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: Invoked in his first post. Upon learning that everyone is now out in space, T.M. Remix decides that since he's gotten used to a weird life before, he'll be able to adapt to ''this'' weird life too eventually.

Tina is a very strange girl, to say the least. She isn’t very used to people other than her two “companions” who she calls Grimm and Arachne. In case you didn’t know they’re puppets, skeletons respectively. No one is really sure if Tina is aware whether or not her puppets and inanimate objects, because really she switches from both, although she prefers if the person she’s currently conversing with refers to both as real. She may come off as strange at first but if you get to know her Valentina is a good person at heart. She's the second victim of the mutual killing game, killed through blunt force trauma.
----
* BilingualBonus: In-universe. Upon the revelation of the chapter 2 motive, Valentina says to Monobear, "<You sick son of a bitch… One fucking day you’ll get what you deserve…>". However, she says it in Spanish (her mother tongue), so while we readers are provided a translation, her classmates will not know what she said unless they can understand Spanish.
* CompanionCube: Her two puppets Grimm and Arachne.
%%* CurtainsMatchTheWindow
* FlippingTheBird: In the deadblog, unlocked post game, Valentina is shown to be flipping Haruka off during chapter three's trial during her 'confession'.
* InterruptedSuicide: In chapter two, Valentina was about to take sodium cyanide when Akemi found her and tried to talk her down. However in the end, Valentina gets her wish with Akemi assisting in her death (specifically, Valentina poisoned herself with cyanide, and Akemi hit her over the head after the poisoning)... though it then counts as a murder.

!!The Mastermind (Tokiko Tokie)
----
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Tokiko is strapped into a chair on a mock pilots deck with two buttons before her: a simple red one and one with a warning symbol on it. When she presses the blank button the rocket starts to lift and shoots away. A screen shows a calm Tokiko pressing the warning button, which blows up the rocket and takes Tokiko with it.
* DespairEventHorizon: This is why Tokiko started the mutual killing game and became its Mastermind. Tokiko was informed that the Earth has gone to hell because of a power struggle, and Tokiko concluded that HumansAreBastards, so instead of using the information to make things right like the person who told her this expected she would, Tokiko decided out of sheer despair to reprogram everything into the mutual killing game.
* EvilGenius: Tokiko technically counts as "evil" since she set the mutual killing game into motion, but Tokiko was motivated by falling into despair rather than by malice.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: Tokiko doesn't fight during any stage of being led to her execution, and is even responsible for blowing up the rocket ship featured in the event.
* HumansAreBastards: Tokiko came to this conclusion after being informed that Earth is now a hellzone given the massive war/power-struggle taking place there now. Whether Tokiko is right in this setting is up to the reader.

!!Astral
A mysterious character that appears at endgame, Astral claims to be responsible for waking the students up. Astral is the one to give the surviving students the keycard to escape the base; xis exact actions during the game of mutual killing are unknown.
----
* CassandraTruth: Astral claims to have noticed the mastermind's despair as soon as the students woke up, but no-one listened.
* HeelFaceTurn: The dialogue seems to imply Astral went through this; after no-one listened to xyr warnings about the mastermind, Astral became their protector instead.
