! The Sand Snakes

-->''"It would gladden my heart if I could assure you that the Sand Snakes were alone in wanting war, but I will not tell you lies, ser."''
-->--'''Doran Martell'''

Oberyn's eight bastard children by various women, who are all female. They have yet to play much of a role in the story, other than agitating for war against the Lannisters and being imprisoned by Doran for it.
----
* ActionGirl: Obara Sand most notably, but the narrative implies that all of them are quite capable of defending themselves in one way or another. Arianne's thoughts that Elia Sand's sisters would kill her "seven different ways" if Elia got hurt might imply that each Snake has her own unique specialty, [[LittleMissBadass even the youngest]], Loreza (who is 6-turned-7 years old as of ''The Winds of Winter'').
* AmazonBrigade: The oldest Sand Snakes.
* AnimalMotif: Their father was known as the Red Viper, and very fittingly they're called the Sand Snakes. Despite the fact that they mostly don't look like each other, they all have in common [[FamilyEyeResemblance their father's "viper" eyes]] in shape, if not color. Their personality is also not to be underestimate, since they are HotBlooded and vengeful. [[spoiler: Also, snakes are sneaky by nature, and they are literally sneaking around Westeros to gain useful information for their uncle Doran.]]
* BadassAdorable: Dorea Sand, an 8-year-old girl who carries around a morningstar.
** Tyene Sand's innocent appearance and manners cover up a deadly killer whose specialty is poison.
* BigSisterInstinct: For each other; while having to look after Elia on a diplomatic mission, Arianne thinks that the Sand Snakes would kill her seven different ways if anything happened to their sister, amusingly including even the little ones in her count. They're also outraged after discovering that Cersei is plotting to have their cousin Trystane killed so she can blame it on Tyrion.
* CoolBigSis: Ellaria claims that her daughters Elia and Obella look up to the four eldest Sand Snakes as their idols. Ellaria's youngest daughters Dorea and Loreza look up to Elia and Obella in turn.
* DaddysGirl: They all love Oberyn and remain loyal to him even after [[spoiler:his death.]]
* FamilialFoe: They share their father's burning hatred of Tywin Lannister and Gregor Clegane for the horrific story of how their aunt and cousins were killed, with it made clear they would have gladly helped their father murder both men. After [[spoiler:Oberyn and Gregor kill each other in a MutualKill, and Tywin is killed by his own son, the Snakes still seek revenge on House Lannister for the circumstances of Oberyn's death]]. Ironically, the events of ''A Dance with Dragons'' are looking to set one of these up for them in a way none will expect: it's strongly implied [[spoiler:Robert Strong, Cersei's new champion, is in fact Gregor Clegane returned from the dead, and unaware of anything about that, Doran has tasked Nymeria and Tyene with going to King's Landing like their father before them to do his bidding, setting them up for a collision course with a zombified, pissed-off version of Gregor Clegane who might not be able to be killed by normal means anymore. The Snakes may have to tread carefully indeed to not go the same way as Oberyn]]...
* FamilyThemeNaming: The three eldest daughters of Ellaria appear to be named for the previous generation of Martell siblings: Elia Sand is [[DeadGuyJunior clearly named for]] the late Princess Elia mourned by her brothers, Obella Sand's name seems to be a [[invoked]][[PortmanteauCoupleName marriage]] of [[AncestralName her parents]] '''Ob'''eryn and '''Ella'''ria's names, and Dorea seems named for [[NearAndDearBabyNaming her father's elder brother Prince Doran]].
* FighterMageThief: The three eldest Sand Snakes fit this in regards to their skillsets and how they wish to conduct war. Obara is a BrawnHilda, the most physical who fights with spear, shield, and whip and calls for the razing of Oldtown, Nymeria is the Thief with her penchant for HiddenWeapons (knives in particular) and suggests assassination as retribution for [[spoiler:the death of the Sand Snakes' father Oberyn]], and Tyene is the Mage; she has no fighting skills, but she's a MasterPoisoner who advises a more defensive war by letting Dorne's desert environment break the Lannisters.
* LikeParentLikeChild: All the eldest Sand Snakes take after some part of their father, which is why [[spoiler:Doran taps them to take over for Oberyn as playing different roles Doran needs]]. Obara prefers fighting with spear and shield the way Oberyn does and proves to be closer to the bloodthirsty, irrational, and HotBlooded reputation of her "half-mad" father than even [[HiddenDepths her father]]; [[HereditaryHomosexuality Nymeria]] has his appetite for as many women as a bed can fit at once, hews closest to Oberyn's actual temperment as we see it in ''A Storm of Swords'', and is chosen to succeed him as the Dornish representative to the small council; and Tyene has his taste for poisons and thinks along the same lines as him, hatching the same scheme to crown Princess Myrcella and force a war on Dornish home turf. If Sarella is Alleras as suggested, she's like Nymeria in taking most after their father's sly and affable personality, casually flouts rules to go do as she pleases and study at the Citadel, and [[AmbiguouslyGay also possibly]] likes the ladies (who certainly like [[SweetOnPollyOliver "Alleras"]]).
* LittleMissBadass: 8-year-old Dorea Sand is already wielding a [[CarryABigStick morningstar]], using it to knock blood oranges off trees at the Water Gardens.
* MoralMyopia: The eldest Snakes are very vocal about wanting to utterly destroy House Lannister -- one of them specifically listing killing several members not because they were at fault of [[spoiler:Oberyn dying]] or Elia killed, but to achieve a "symmetry" between killed members of both houses -- but are horrified when they hear [[spoiler:Cersei is planning to have Trystane killed.]]
* MultinationalTeam: Because of their father's undiscriminating taste in women, the Sand Snakes come from all over Westeros and even beyond. Their mothers include an Oldtown prostitute, a Volantene noblewoman, a septa from the Reach, a trader from the Summer Isles and a bastard woman from Dorne.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: "Sand" is the Dornish surname given to noble-born bastard children, and "Snakes" is because they are the daughters of Oberyn Martell, "The Red Viper".
* PetTheDog: The elder Sand Snakes do genuinely care for Ellaria Sand, their 'stepmother', even if they dismiss her opinions on revenge.
* PoliticallyActivePrincess: Though they are illegitimate, Obara, Tyene, and Nymeria are a prince's daughters who take active roles in Dornish politics. Doran even selects Nymeria to take her father's vacant Dornish seat on the Seven Kingdoms' Small Council and sends her off to King's Landing. Something Cersei is sure to ''love.''
* PracticallyDifferentGenerations: Obara (the eldest) is twenty-eight while Loreza (the youngest) is seven.
* SiblingTeam: Despite differences in their personalities, methods, and even their mothers and appearances, Obara, Nymeria, and Tyene stick by each other as sisters and work together in ''A Feast for Crows'' and ''A Dance with Dragons'', with their cousin Arianne an honorary member of the Sibling Team. As of the latter book, [[spoiler:Nymeria and Tyene are sent off together to King's Landing. Nymeria is tasked with dealing with Cersei and her small council directly while Tyene is to tackle the High Sparrow and his Swords and Stars army, but given how dangerous King's Landing is and how protective [[BigSisterInstinct the Snakes]] are [[ThickerThanWater of family]], no doubt they'll be collaborating to watch each other's backs once they're in the thick of it.]]
* SingleSexOffspring: The Sand Snakes are Oberyn's eight bastard daughters of various ages from five different women.
* SmugSnake: Fitting given their nickname, the three elder Obara, Nymeria and Tyene are certainly this if their attitude and plans to avenge their father and Elia's deaths are anything to go by. Obara is very arrogant and loud but her plan to avenge her father indicates that she has very poor strategic and planning skills, Nymeria is more subtle but her plan for vengeance is just for her and Tyene to assassinate the main Lannisters as if it was evident without any real plan or thinking about the consequences of what could happen if she and Tyene are caught, and while Tyene's plan is smarter than her sisters' with her intending for Dorne to use its home advantage against the Lannisters, it's based on the assumption that the Lannisters and the Tyrells would send armies to Dorne after Myrcella is crowned Queen of the Seven Kingdoms which is far from certain to happen given the differences in inheritance laws and mentality between Dorne and the other kingdoms. They also constantly act arrogant and disdainful toward Doran even if his leniency and patience is the only thing keeping them out of prison.
* SpannerInTheWorks: [[spoiler:To Doran Martell,]] though they might argue he brought it on himself due to his passivity. Their main purpose in the story is to agitate the population of Dorne into a war with the Lannisters, [[spoiler:a war that the Dornish are actually grossly unprepared to fight due to Doran and Oberyn's boastful exaggerations of manpower and resources. Unlike Arianne, they remain ignorant of this.]]
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Obara and Sarella (Tomboys) and Nymeria and Tyene (Girly Girls).
* WarHawk: The three elder Sand Snakes, Obara, Nymeria, and Tyene, are eager to wage war against the Lannisters for the deaths of their aunt, cousins, [[spoiler:and father]].
* WeAreEverywhere: [[spoiler: After being involved in Doran's plotting against the Lannisters, they are sent one in incognito to the Faith (Tyene), one along with a Kingsguard (Obara), one to the small council (Nymeria), not to mention that one of them is already implied to be at the Citadel [[SweetPollyOliver disguised as a man]] (Sarella). Save for the North, there's a Sand Snake in almost every major plot of the later books.]]

[[folder:Obara Sand]]
!!Obara Sand
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/obara_sand_ffg2.jpg]]
-->''"Give me back my spear, Uncle. Cersei sent us a head. We should send her back a bag of them."''

The eldest Sand Snake, she is the daughter of a whore in Oldtown. She fights with a whip, spear, and shield.
----
* TheAlcoholic: Her uncle Doran describes her as fond of wine and implies she might be [[InVinoVeritas loose-lipped when drunk]].
* AncestralName: Her name '''Ob'''ara is close enough to her father '''Ob'''eryn that it seems her mother probably named Obara after him in his absence, years before he heard of Obara and came to collect her. Becomes a case of FamilyThemeNaming when her [[PracticallyDifferentGenerations much younger half-sister]] '''Ob'''ella is also apparently also named in their father's honor.
* TheBigGirl: She is the oldest and largest of the Sand Snake and the most physically adept out of them, specializing in more strenuous or demanding activities compared to Nymeria and Tyene's cloak-and-dagger methods. Areo Hotah pays her her credit for being [[LightningBruiser "quick and strong"]], but thinks she's still no match for him.
* BrawnHilda: Obara Sand possesses no beauty or elegance, but is stated to be a fearsome warrior.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Implied -- she hates the Lannisters most of all, but not even she floats the idea of harming Myrcella when the girl is living with the Martells.
* GeneralFailure: Obara talks big, but she is this if her proposed campaign plan is anything to go by. Her plan involves seizing the Marcher castles before advancing on and sacking Oldtown like it's nothing. The problem is that the Marcher castles and Oldtown boast some of the most formidable fortifications in all of Westeros and neither Oldtown nor the Marchers (except for the Carons) contributed significantly to the War of the Five Kings, meaning their forces will be on hand to defend their homes. And that's without going into details of how Dorne has a much smaller pool of manpower to recruit from and tend not to do well in prolonged campaigns away from their homeland, or that attacking the Marches or Oldtown doesn't hurt the Lannisters or gain the Dornish anything other than more enemies or that she had no plans to counter the inevitable retaliation from the Iron Throne.
* HotBlooded: She is the most outwardly aggressive of the Sand Snakes and cares little for subtlety or hiding her true feelings. Where everyone else asked to toast to King Tommen either politely obliged or quietly stayed their hand, Obara [[TastesLikeDisdain upended her wine on the floor]] and stormed out of the hall in a blistering rage at the Lannisters.
* {{Jerkass}}: She's the most brash, bitter, and heedless of the Sand Snakes. As Areo Hotah puts it, "her riding clothes were old brown leather, worn and supple. They were the softest things about her." She's the most antagonistic towards her uncle Doran even after [[spoiler:he brings her into the fold to work for him]], and even though she and Arianne are close she ''still'' makes a thoughtless joke about Arianne's costly mistakes, upsetting the guilt-ridden Arianne and angering mild-mannered Doran. When she brings up how her mother drank herself to death a year after Obara willingly left her to go live in Dorne with Oberyn, it's only to prove a point and she doesn't seem sad or mournful over it. Her only real "kind" moment so far is [[spoiler:[[JerkWithAHeartOfGold shock and anger that Cersei is planning to have her little cousin Trystane killed]].]]
* MamasBabyPapasMaybe: A rare inversion. Her mother did not think that Obara was Oberyn's daughter, as she was a prostitute who had slept with many other men, but Oberyn himself was certain of it. Of course, from the AncestralName example above, it's likely the mother ''did'' think she was Oberyn's and was lying in desperation to keep her daughter.
* MisplacedRetribution: In order to get revenge for [[spoiler:her father's death]], Obara wants to pay the Iron Throne back in blood by [[DisproportionateRetribution attacking and burning Oldtown]], the second-largest city in Westeros. Oldtown had ''absolutely nothing'' to do with [[spoiler:Oberyn's]] death and isn't even close to where he died. It is, however, her birthplace and she hates it enough to be happy to destroy it to send a message to the Lannisters in a ''big'' way.
* NoodleIncident: It is not yet known why Obara hates her birthplace of Oldtown so much that she wants it destroyed, though her growing up in a brothel suggests her early childhood wasn't the most pleasant.
* ParentalIssues: Implied. Obara definitely [[DaddysGirl prefers her father]] to her mother since she preferred to take the spear and go with him (a stranger who might not have even been her father for all she knew) to Dorne which she'd never been to before, leaving behind the crying mother she'd known all her life. As an adult she shows no outward signs of sadness about her mother's death and also ''hates'' Oldtown where her mother lived and died, enough to be looking to start a war with the crown as an excuse to destroy it. Though as one can only assume from the unattractive looks Obara got from her mother that her mother probably didn't work for a ''[[WretchedHive particularly]]'' [[RedLightDistrict upscale brothel]], it may be that she hated living there [[FreudianExcuse for other reasons than her mother]].
* SonOfAWhore: She was born to a whore in Oldtown that Oberyn bedded. When he came to claim her, the whore refused to give Obara up, but Oberyn slapped her and threw a spear at Obara's feet. He pointed at the weapon and then to her crying mother, and let her choose between a spear or tears as her weapon. Obara chose the spear and left her crying mother behind forever.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She has close-set eyes and rat-brown hair like her mother.
* {{Tomboy}}: With a touch of TomboyPrincess, as she is the bastard daughter of a prince and a prostitute and because of her father receives status, respect, and privileges similar to her princely trueborn cousins. Where her younger sisters Nymeria and Tyene are graceful, feminine, and beautiful, Obara is described as "mannish" and acts much more angry and aggressive. She dresses in breeches, belt, and tunic, clothing it would be easy to fight in, instead of the gowns her sisters and cousins favor, prides herself as a warrior and horserider with confident swagger, and doesn't mince words or even try to put up a facade of civility the way her sisters, [[spoiler:Uncle Doran]], and Arianne do. Unlike Arya or Brienne, the better gender equality in Dorne means most people there don't have a problem with these parts of Obara.
* WarHawk: Demands that Doran declare war on the Lannisters and their supporters after [[spoiler:Oberyn's]] death, and along with her sisters she tries to stir up discontent in Sunspear to force the issue. She ends up being imprisoned briefly because of this.
* WhereIWasBornAndRazed: As revenge for [[spoiler:her father Oberyn's death]], she plans to declare war by destroying Oldtown, which is also the place where she was born.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Nymeria Sand]]
!!Nymeria Sand
!!!Lady Nym
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nymeria_sand_ffg_2744.png]]
-->''"It ends in blood, as it began. It ends when Casterly Rock is cracked open, so the sun can shine on the maggots and the worms within. It ends with the utter ruin of Tywin Lannister and all his works."''

Daughter of a noblewoman from Old Volantis. She specializes in using knives as her weapons.
----
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: Of the Sand Snakes, nobody would call her the most obviously HotBlooded one. Not that she fades into the background, as such, but she makes you work to get to know her.
* AncestralName: She is named after her [[NamedAfterSomebodyFamous most celebrated ancestor]], Princess Nymeria of Ny Sar, the Rhoynish princess who brought House Martell into power as rulers of Dorne and gave Dorne its unique Rhoynish flavor and values. It's interesting that it's the half-Volantene Snake who is named for the princess, since Volantis, the land of Nymeria Sand's mother and likely where Lady Nym was born, is located along the Rhoyne that the Martells' Rhoynish ancestors hail from. This might make Nymeria Sand the first of Princess Nymeria's line to have been born on the Rhoyne since the first Nymeria's ships set sail about a thousand years ago.
* BlueBlood: In two different flavors. Her mother is a Volantene noblewoman, and her father is a Dornish prince.
* BraidsOfAction: Is one of the comparably few {{Action Girl}}s in ''A Song of Ice and Fire'' and she favours keeping her hair out of trouble by trapping it in a long braid.
* CoolBigSis: Arianne seems to see her this way, being almost as close to her as she is to Nymeria's little sister Tyene and Nymeria being about two years older than them both. When Areo searches her he finds a knife tucked in her boot that Arianne remembers as being a gift from Lady Nym. She also calls Nymeria her sister when she and the other Sand Snakes are sent on their missions.
* DeadpanSnarker: When Prince Doran warns her that "King's Landing is a pit of snakes," Nymeria's response is to smile and quip, "Why, Uncle, I love [[AnimalMotifs snakes]]."
* DeviousDaggers: She is mentioned to always have a dozen daggers on her person.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Despite her less savory traits, she appears to put stock by the chivalry and honor of knights, certainly that they wouldn't [[spoiler:knowingly lure innocent children to their death]]. When she learns of the true [[spoiler:mission Queen Cersei has set Ser Balon Swann to]], Lady Nym reacts with the same disgust anyone else in Westeros would.
-->'''Nymeria:''' This is monstrous. I would not have believed it, not of a Kingsguard knight.
* HereditaryHomosexuality: Her father is bi and she's known to sleep with other women. Whether she has any interest in men is unknown.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Even though she herself suggested killing little Tommen one book prior, she joins her family in condemning [[spoiler:Ser Balon taking part of Cersei's scheme to try to have little Trystane killed and blame it on Tyrion]]. Arguably, this could be put down to DeliberateValuesDissonance, similar to why the Red Wedding struck such a nerve in Westeros regardless of allegiance[[note]]specifically because of guest right was broken to dishonorably assassinate their own king under a peace banner; had [[spoiler:the Freys]] openly declared against [[spoiler:Robb Stark]] and met him on the battlefield to kill him, no one outside of the king's territories would have batted an eye[[/note]]. Nymeria was arguably more shocked a knight [[spoiler:who as part of his vows on becoming a knight, sworn an oath to protect the weak and innocent, would betray a child under his protection]]. Notably, she and her sisters (even Obara) never even float the idea of harming Myrcella, currently under their family's care in fosterage, within arm's reach to kill, and Nymeria expressing disgust already at the nature of the "Baratheon" children's conception.
* LadyOfWar: A looker, well-educated, fairly distant and graceful. But, you really need to focus on where the daggers are, just in case they end up in you.
* LipstickLesbian: Nymeria was found to be abed with the [[TwinThreesomeFantasy Fowler twins]], which isn't too much of a hint, until one checks the appendices and discovers that the Fowler twins are both female.
* MsFanservice: On par with Arianne. She often wears very revealing clothing, which Areo Hotah prefers, not for the fanservice, but because it makes it easier to spot if [[HiddenWeapons she is carrying any knives]].
-->'''Areo Hotah's thoughts:''' Nymeria was least dangerous when nearly naked. Elsewise she was sure to have a dozen blades concealed about her person.
* SilkHidingSteel: A borderline villainous or at least AntiHero example. The daughter of a highborn woman of a powerful, wealthy, and proud city, together with a CulturedBadass prince whose land was the only one to successfully defy dragons, Nymeria is known for her beauty, calm, and elegance, and conducts herself like a perfect lady... if not for her assortment of daggers hidden on her body, cheerful willingness to put them to use, and wild thirst for revenge. Areo even notes she's in truth as dangerous as Obara. [[spoiler:When sent into the heart of their enemies to sit the small council, straight to the side of the queen she knows is plotting against their family, Lady Nym stays cool as ever and confident in her ability to navigate the politics and treachery of King's Landing without overplaying her hand.]]
* SinsOfOurFathers: After Oberyn's death she wants to carry on his desire for revenge on wrongs done to his family, by claiming the lives of four specific Lannisters (most of whom weren't even involved) to balance the scales: "Lord Tywin's golden twins, as payment for Elia's children. The old lion, for Elia herself. And last of all [[WouldHurtAChild the little king]], for my father."
* UnknownRival: First expresses her desire to kill Martell ArchEnemy Tywin Lannister to avenge her aunt Princess Elia's CruelAndUnusualDeath at the hand of Ser Gregor Clegane, and later laments she did not get her hands on Tywin to give him an even more painful, gruesome death. By all appearances the Sand Snakes never even crossed Tywin's mind to fear. If he did have any worries about their reactions to their father's death, it was offscreen, and he didn't live long enough to do anything about it.
* VillainousWidowsPeak: A trait she inherited from her father, and she is definitely one of the more villainous Sand Snakes, wanting to kill innocent Tommen.
* WouldHurtAChild: Includes the 8-year-old King Tommen in her Lannister "to-kill" list, naming his death to be the one to even out her father's. [[spoiler:Which makes her primly appalled reaction to hearing Cersei's plan to kill her young cousin Trystane more than a tad hypocritical, though in fairness she may have been more shocked a sworn knight would so blatantly break his knightly vows and help Cersei do it, than that an enemy of their House would try to kill Trystane.]]
-->'''Doran:''' The boy has never wronged us.
-->'''Nymeria:''' The boy is a bastard born of treason, incest, and adultery, if Lord Stannis can be believed. Only royal blood can wash out my father's murder.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tyene Sand]]
!!Tyene Sand
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tyene_sand_ffg2.jpg]]
-->''"We could kill him, to be sure, but then we would need to kill the rest of his party too, even those sweet young squires. That would be... oh so '''messy'''."''

Daughter of a Septa and the closest of the Sand Snakes to Princess Arianne Martell. She specializes in poisons, which she learned from her father.
----
* AnimalMotifs: While Tyene and all her sisters are called the Sand Snakes, it seems the most apropos for her given that she is a MasterPoisoner like her father, Oberyn.
* BadassAdorable: Her innocent appearance and manners cover up a deadly killer.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: By reputation. She seems like a sweet and lovely young maiden...and if you make the mistake of assuming that's all she is, you'll probably be dying of poison sooner than you'd like.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Arianne, Andrey Dalt, Sylva Santagar, and Garin. Arianne notes that she and Tyene were best friends doing everything together; they learned to ride together, read together, got drunk for the first time, and would have lost their virginity together had their willing partner Andrey not gotten too excited and climaxed the moment Tyene pulled his pants down.
* CreepyBlueEyes: For those who see past her innocent persona, her blue eyes are definitely this. Areo Hotah's narration implies they're closer to this trope than InnocentBlueEyes.
-->''Her hair was gold as well, and her eyes were deep blue pools... and yet somehow they reminded the captain of her father's eyes, though Oberyn's had been as black as night. All of Prince Oberyn's daughters [[FamilyEyeResemblance have his viper eyes]], Hotah realized suddenly. The color does not matter.''
* CuteAndPsycho: She shows shades of this, particularly when she asks if [[spoiler:Gregor Clegane]] suffered as he died in a tone any other woman would use to ask if her dress was pretty.
* DissonantSerenity: She sweetly and cheerfully asks Ser Balon Swann if [[spoiler:the Mountain]] suffered a long and painful death, and hatches plots of war and murders with an innocent smile. So far the only things to make her suffer [[NotSoStoic any loss in composure]] are Doran putting off her schemes and [[spoiler:finding out Cersei is planning to have Trystane murdered]].
* EnduranceDuel: Her idea for a war is to crown Myrcella and let the Lannisters come to them, so that the desert climate of Dorne will break them.
* FaceOfAnAngelMindOfADemon: Has golden blond hair and blue eyes and an innocent appearance and manner befitting the daughter of a Septa, which fools others into thinking she is not dangerous like her sisters. In truth, she is the most sadistic and calculating Sand Snake.
* FemmeFatale: In a rather distressing way, yes. Much is made about how chaste she looks and how gently she speaks and how misleading that is.
* InnocentBlueEyes: She isn't really, but she exploits this trope and HairOfGoldHeartOfGold, using her wide blue eyes and blonde hair to appear sweet, innocent, and pious.
* JerkAss: Like Obara, she keeps throwing barbs at her uncle for his passiveness, even after [[spoiler:he releases the Sand Snakes and starts bringing her, Obara, and Nymeria into the fold for the Martell conspiracy]]. Only difference is hers are SugaryMalice flavored - yum!
* KingmakerScenario: The second character (after her father Oberyn and before her cousin Arianne) to suggest crowning Princess Myrcella as the new Queen of Westeros instead of younger brother Tommen. She wanted to use this to provoke Lannister forces into coming to Dorne to try and subdue their rebellion only die in its inhospitable terrain, as outsiders long have. Sweetening the pot is that Myrcella is betrothed to Tyene's cousin Prince Trystane; should House Martell successfully cast the Lannisters down from power, they would become the new rulers of Westeros as Myrcella's foster family and Trystane's Martell children would inherit the Iron Throne after Myrcella. Though Arianne doesn't mention it in her narration, it's likely she and Tyene discussed the plan together, since Arianne enacts her "Queensmaker" plot after the Sand Snakes' arrests.
* LadyOfWar: She might count, due to her demeanor, though she prefers poisons and plots to direct combat in warfare.
* LooseLips: [[spoiler:Doran kept the truth of his Targaryen restoration plans from Arianne because of Tyene, as he knew Arianne would be unable to keep from telling her best friend Tyene, and Tyene would in turn report it to big sisters Obara and Nymeria.]]
* MasterPoisoner: Her reputation as one is so well known that when Doran puts his hand on her head for a blessing, Maester Caleotte ''immediately'' checks for puncture marks afterwards. Arianne recalls Oberyn teaching Tyene ways to safely milk venom from snakes when they were young, and she is versed well enough in poisons that she assures her sisters with full certainty that [[spoiler:Gregor Clegane is indeed dead just from knowing what kind of poison their father ''would've'' used to inflict on him]].
* MeaningfulName: In an amusingly douchey move, it seems '''Ty'''ene was named for the ruling House of the Reach where she was born, House '''Ty'''rell, who are known to be A) devout and thus unlikely to want a bastard born from a soiled septa named after them, and B) historically ''very'' anti-Dorne and particularly anti-Oberyn, making it look even more like Oberyn named his third daughter to thumb his nose at them about bedding a septa right in their kingdom. This proved prophetic for Tyene's own lightly mocking personality, and even her facade of being only a gentle, proper lady as a cover for her conniving true personality, like House Tyrell's women.
* TheMole: [[spoiler:In ''A Dance With Dragons'', Doran sends her and Nymeria to King's Landing, with Tyene to infiltrate the Great Sept of Baelor as a Septa and learn about the new High Septon and how he may affect their plans.]]
* MoralMyopia: Has no problem killing children if they're aligned with Lannisters (note her character quote above). Yet moments afterward, when Doran reveals Cersei's plan [[spoiler: to murder Trystane in a FalseFlagOperation to implicate Tyrion]], her reaction is horror, miscomprehension, and indignation.
* PassiveAggressiveKombat: While her sisters Obara and Nymeria are about as subtle as two-by-fours to the skull in [[spoiler:wanting vengeance for their father's death]], Tyene prefers the more veiled approach that still makes it clear she feels the same.
-->'''Doran''': There is a difference between fear and caution.\
'''Tyene''': Oh, I must pray that I never see you ''frightened'', Uncle. You might forget to breathe.
* PimpedOutDress: She owns and wears a number of these, to further her image as a beautiful and innocent young maiden. One of her gowns is pale blue samite with Myrish lace, and another is cream and green with long lace sleeves.
* PoisonedWeapons: Her specialty, like her father before her.
* PreachersKid: She is a septa's daughter, and her mother taught her of the Faith of the Seven by reading its holy books to her from infancy. This is the reason for [[spoiler:why Doran sends her to spy on the new High Septon who's re-formed the Faith's army of the Swords and the Stars, knowing better than Cersei how dangerous this could be. Only time will tell if Tyene's innocent act can fool the High Sparrow better than Cersei's.]]
* PsychopathicWomanchild: Areo Hotah thinks of her as one, noting how childish she seems, with her little giggles and feigned innocence masking her dangerous nature.
* SilkHidingSteel: She exploits her pure, sweet appearance. Nobody would expect a MasterPoisoner to look so innocent.
* TextileWorkIsFeminine: In her first appearance in ''A Feast for Crows'', she is embroidering an image of her father wearing red armor and astride a sand steed, to give to her uncle Doran [[StealthInsult "to help you remember him."]]
* WarHawk: Like Obara, she wants war with the Lannisters, but prefers starting a defensive one rather than an offensive one by crowning Myrcella Queen, forcing the Lannisters to try invading Dorne. She ends up being imprisoned briefly because of this. Interestingly, her plan has a greater chance of success based on historical precedence and common sense, than Obara's, even though Obara fits the [[ActionGirl warrior woman]] archetype much better.
* VirginInAWhiteDress: Discussed. She is wryly amused when [[spoiler:Doran dispatches her to infiltrate the Faith as a Septa.]]
-->'''Tyene:''' Why not? White suits my colouring. I look so ... pure.

!!Sarella Sand

Daughter of a trader from the Summer Isles. She has a reputation for being very curious.
----
* TheGhost: She has yet to appear, although she has been referred to as "playing a game" in Oldtown. Interestingly, there is an androgynous, Dornish student of the Citadel in Oldtown named Alleras, which is [[SdrawkcabAlias Sarella backwards]], he has a widow's peak like Oberyn, and his father was from Dorne and his mother was from the Summer Isles. Guess what the fandom's assuming.

Oberyn and Ellaria's 14-year-old daughter, and a jouster-in-training.
----
* BigSisterWorship: She worships the elder Sand Snakes, and is in turn looked up to by her younger sisters Dorea and Loreza. Her mother fears that she will follow Obara, Nymeria, and Tyene in their pursuit of vengeance against House Lannister and get herself killed.
* BraidsOfAction: A LittleMissBadass with braids.
* DeadGuyJunior: Named after her aunt.
* InSeriesNickname: "Lady Lance", which Arianne suspects Oberyn gave her.
* LadyInWaiting: She is meant to serve as one to Arianne. She would rather try challenging the knights accompanying them to a joust or to hare off investigating strange places alone.
* LittleMissBadass: She is reputedly very good with a lance (so much that her nickname is "Lady Lance") and tries to pick fights with older men.
-->'''Joss Hood''': Someone needs to spank [[BrattyHalfPint that child]].
-->'''Elia Sand''': I am almost a woman grown, ser. [[KinkySpanking I’ll let you spank me]], though… [[BringIt but first you’ll need to tilt with me, and knock me off my horse]].
* RebelliousPrincess: This is the very reason why Doran sends her with Arianne: as "revenge".
* TagAlongKid: Gets sent with Arianne on a diplomatic mission to determine if [[spoiler:Jon Connington has really returned to Westeros with Aegon VI]].
* {{Tomboy}}: She loves to ride horses and is good with a lance. Ellaria comments she smells like a horse half the time.
* TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior: Played with. On the one hand, there is plenty of precedent for Elia's overly precocious forwardness in both canoodling in corners and adventuring when she's supposed to be doing other things. On the other, seeing actions not unlike her own at that age, both from the outside ''and'' from an older perspective, ''is'' a truly troubling experience for poor Arianne; on a number of uncomfortable levels.
