Go To

Seeing how ''Film/TheHobbit'' is a prequel (the film, not [[Literature/TheHobbit the book]]), this was expected. There are LOADS:

* Dwarven women do in fact have beards, as described by Aragorn in ''Two Towers''.
* Gandalf has trouble with Bilbo's chandelier, just as he does in ''Fellowship of the Ring''.
* During the unexpected party, Gandalf berates the Dwarves by standing up, with his shadow filling the room, as his voice gains a threatening tone, just like he does in ''Fellowship'' when Bilbo accuses him of wanting the Ring for himself.
* Ori carries the big book that the Fellowship finds in Moria, recording the last moments of the colony. His body is the one that Gandalf takes the book from.
* Glóin's axe will later be wielded by his son Gimli.
* The three trolls turn to stone in the exact same positions we see them in during ''Fellowship''.
* Gandalf tells Bilbo that the wizards consist of himself, Saruman, Radagast, and the two blue wizards whose names he has forgotten, explaining Saruman's cryptic reference to "the rods of the five wizards" in ''Return of the King''.
* Radagast's staff is the same one that Gandalf uses in ''Fellowship''. Sure enough, he gives it to him after Gandalf's first staff is destroyed by Sauron in Dol Guldur.
* When Radagast goes to investigate Dol Guldur, he is attacked by the Witch King of Angmar.
* The elven cavalry's trumpet sounds the same as the one Haldir's reinforcements use at Helm's Deep in ''The Two Towers''.
* Elrond tells Bilbo that he is welcome to stay in Rivendell. As we see in ''Fellowship'', he eventually takes him up on his offer.
* While wandering around Rivendell, Bilbo comes across the shards of Narsil and the painting depicting Isildur's duel with Sauron.
* Saruman comments disparagingly on Radagast's fondness for mushrooms, much like his comment in ''Fellowship of the Ring'' about Gandalf's "love of the halflings' leaf."
* The warg riders' meeting place with Azog to tell him that they've lost Thorin's Company is Weathertop.
* The Ring pops onto Bilbo's finger exactly as it does onto Frodo's for the first time.
* Bilbo spares [[spoiler: Gollum's life]]. From ''The Fellowship Of The Ring'':
-->'''Frodo''': It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill him when he had the chance.\
'''Gandalf''': Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand.
* Gandalf calls upon the eagles with the help of a moth.
* While examining the possessions of the captured Dwarves, Legolas makes disparaging comments about the appearance of Glóin's young son Gimli, who, of course, will end up being his best friend. Also, Legolas himself.
* Bard's introduction, wherein he is obscured by shadow and blocks several attacks, is incredibly similar to Gandalf the White's.
* After being introduced as a holier-than-thou ObstructiveBureaucrat, Saruman proves that Gandalf's high regard for him, despite their differences of opinion, is well-founded when he shows up with the rest of the White Council and immediately proceeds to mop the floor with the Ringwraiths and vow to destroy Sauron. Obviously, he fails in this quest, but now we see just how big of a blow to the side of good that his fall was.
* Galadriel attacks Sauron with the same phial she later gives to Frodo.
* Likewise, Thorin gives Bilbo the mithril armor that Bilbo later will give to Frodo.
* Thranduil mentions Ecthelion, the Steward of Gondor, who is the father of Denethor and the grandfather of Boromir and Faramir.
* At the conclusion of ''Film/TheHobbitTheBattleOfTheFiveArmies'', Legolas is told to go look for a young human ranger who is called "Strider", the name used by Aragorn when he's first introduced in ''Fellowship of the Ring''.
* We see the NoodleIncident involving Lobelia Sackville-Baggins's theft of Bilbo's silverware at the estate sale.
* The flashback of Thorin defeating Azog bears many similarities to Sauron's defeat by Isildur: the villain is on a FoeTossingCharge with a mace, kills the king, and brings his heir down to his knees. The heir strikes a desperate blow with his sword, which severely wounds the villain in the hand and turns the tide.
* When confronting the White Council at Dol Guldur, Sauron, talking in Black Speech, utters a variation on one of Gothmog's lines from ''Return of the King'':
-->'''Gothmog''': The Age of Men is over. The Time of the Orc has come.\
'''Sauron''': The Time of the Elves is over. The Age of the Orc has come.
