An anime based on [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Wizard! a popular Japanese rpg of the same name.]] Renji Hiiragi is one of a chosen group of mages known as the Night Wizards. Their job is to make sure that evil doesn't get into our world, keeping it hidden from the eyes of {{Muggles}}. This is all well and good, except Renji ''really'' doesn't want to do the whole "saving the world" thing, no matter how good he is at it. He has a reputation as "the Falling Man", and is constantly missing class. He wants to make sure that he actually shows up at school and gets work done, but his party's leader Anzelotte just keeps calling him away and not giving him any other choice in the matter.

One day, Renji is told that he will have to watch over NewTransferStudent Eris Shiho. Eris is waiting for her birthday, at which point she'll finally meet the MysteriousBenefactor who's been aiding her since she was young. After getting dragged into the Astronomy Club, Eris finds herself joining Renji's party on a quest to recover the seven Jewels that her bracelet is tied to. At the same time, a dark mage -- Bell Zephyr -- begins to move.

The series aired in fall 2007, with the subtitle "the animation" as it is based on a TabletopRPG of the same name.

!!Tropes:

* AdaptationDistillation: The true relationship between the earth as we know it and the Far Side is omitted from the anime. This leads to a motivation for [[spoiler:The Gazer]], which makes little sense in the metaplot. Likewise, the relationship between [[spoiler:Bell Zephyr and Shaimaru]] is greatly simplified because of the lack of that background information.
* AdaptationDeviation: [[spoiler: Eris as the incarnation of Shaimaru. In the RPG, the Demon Lord Ru=Saifa (clearly a reference to Lucifer) is the projection of Shaimaru's power, while Shaimaru himself sleeps deep in the Far Side.]]
* TheAnimeOfTheGame
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:Kureha is revived by Anzelotte and Lion.]]
* BadMoonRising: When the Red Moon rises, the invaders from the Far Side appear on earth.
* {{BFG}}: Akari's weapon of choice. Not only are the shells almost too large to carry one-handed, the gun itself can fly. In episode 9, she uses an even bigger one against Bell Zephyr's forces.
* BookEnds: The show begins and ends with Anzelotte reciting her catchphrase and dragging Renji off on a mission.
* BreakTheCutie: Poor Eris. She learns that [[spoiler: she is the reincarnation of Shaimal, the God of Destruction; all of her memories before meeting Renji and the others were fabricated; of her friends, only Renji stays with her and he ends up fighting Akari and (almost) Kureha; and finally, just as Kureha joins them, she is killed by Kirihito, who then reveals himself to be Eris' mysterious benefactor and planned everything so that she'd fall into a DespairEventHorizon and awaken Shaimal within her.]] She gets better though.
* ButThouMust: Anzelotte. "For the request which I am about to ask of you, please reply with 'hai' or 'yes'" ("'okay' or 'yes'" in the subs) is how she asks for favors, [[EstablishingCharacterMoment is her first line of dialogue in the show]], and is, for all practical purposes, her catchphrase. Renji keeps ''trying'' to say no, but is always ignored and sent on the mission anyway.
* CharacterCatchphrase:
** Nightmare says [[GratuitousEnglish "Dream"]] all the time, but since he's Japanese, it's something like "Durimu".
** Kureha says "Hawawa~" when stressed, excited, or anytime.
** Anzelotte's is mentioned above.
* ChekhovsClassroom: Science class saves the day as far as one of the Jewels is concerned.
* CleanUpCrew: The World Barrier acts as a particularly powerful version of this, being able to RetGone anything that does not conform to reality. It can alter memeories, modify physical records, and even undo physical harm or death, in order to preserve what is considered to be normal.
* ClubPresident: The Astronomy Club, led by Kureha. It's really more of a convenient way to gather the Night Wizards in the school.
* DemonLordsAndArchdevils: Bell and Lion. Also Paru=Kuru and Azel=Ivris in episode 9.
* DemotedToExtra: In episode 9, among the forces Bell controls, Paru=Kuru silently accepts orders from Bell. In the RPG, however, Paru is a Demon Lord of similar strength to Bell who claims to have a higher rank than her and considers Bell a rival.
* DoItYourselfThemeTune: Ui Miyazaki, Eris's voice actress, sings the opening theme.
* EmotionlessGirl: Akari. Her face doesn't even change when she is angry.
* EnemyMine: Bell does end up joining with the heroes in the end, if only for one battle.
* EvilOverlord: Bell Zephyr fits many of the standard Overlord tropes.
* GottaCatchThemAll: The seven Jewels of Virtue, a group of {{Cosmic Keystone}}s that are very, very important. Unfortunately, [[spoiler:the Jewels turn out to be an UnholyHolySword -- they're fragments of Shaimal's power, and when they're brought together, Shaimal reawakens within Eris.]]
* {{Hammerspace}}: The Lunar Robes can be used to store items. [[MundaneUtility Eris uses hers to carry lunch.]]
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Renji's extreme desire to actually finish his education. He's smart enough to get it done, he just never gets a chance to actually ''be'' in school.
* InstantRunes
* InvisibletoNormals: Thanks to the Wizards' Lunar Robes, and the Emulators' Lunar Caskets
* JourneyToTheCenterOfTheMind: One episode takes place in Eris' dream world, and introduces Nightmare.
* KnightTemplar: [[spoiler:Gazer is convinced that humanity deserves to be destroyed and remade because they constantly go to war and destroy the environment. To that end, he created Eris as a vessel for Shaimal so that she will destroy the world.]]
* {{Masquerade}}: Required due to the presence of the [[MasqueradeEnforcer World Barrier]]. Both the Wizards and the Emulators have to hide their magical nature via Lunar Caskets and Lunar Robes, which are pocket dimensions that allows people to fight without destroying the surrounding area. The difference is that Lunar Caskets can spread over large areas, draining the life force of the humans and other living creatures. The Wizards fight to prevent that.
* MasqueradeEnforcer: The World barrier was put in place to protect earth from extra-dimensional invasion, and so it destroys anything that does not conform to the “proper appearance of the Earth” (i.e. what is considered normal). The World Barrier targets both Emulators and Wizards, forcing both to stay hidden.
* {{Metaplot}}: The anime is embedded into the Metaplot of the RPG, to the point [[spoiler:that the destruction of The Gazer is the cause of the new invaders which are the main difference between the "Night Wizard!" and "Night Wizard! The 2nd Edition".]]
* {{Miko}}: Kureha. This extends into her fighting style, where she uses a crossbow loaded with charms.
* NewTransferStudent: Eris
* NoOneGetsLeftBehind: Anzelotte's willingness to abandon Yui in order to secure the Jewel of Faith caused Kurusu to desert her cause. [[spoiler: Renji's determination to gather the Jewels without sacrificing anyone is what inspires him to entrust the Jewel to the protagonists.]]
* NoodleIncident: What is Hiiragi's secret Kureha keeps teasing him with?
* OrphansPlotTrinket: Eris' bracelet
* PhysicalGod: [[spoiler:Kirihito/The Gazer is referred to as a God as is Shaimaru.]] Taking information from the original RPG into account, there is also [[spoiler:Bell Zephyr who is actually a fellow God who joined Shaimaru in his rebellion.]]
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Both Anzelotte and Bell are hundreds of years old, but look young and active.
* RetGone: The World barrier has this power, able to re-write reality so that it conforms to what is considered to be normal (handy thing, isn't it).
* TheReveal: [[spoiler:Kirihito is the BigBad.]]
* ThatSoundsFamiliar: Bell Zephyr is written in the original Japanese based on pronunciation and thus very similar to Beelzebub (based on pronunciation), which is made even more obvious by her being the "Queen of Flies". (There are many additional examples in the RPG, showing that the designer likes that trope)
* WakeUpGoToSchoolSaveTheWorld: Renji, although Anzelotte rarely lets him go to school
