Tomoru Shindo is an ordinary college student who is having some troubles: he doesn't really know what he wants to do with his life, outside of maybe joining the Earth Defense Force. Lately, he's been having odd dreams about protecting a woman from some giant monsters; also, he has dreams about some mecha named Orgun running from some other mechas, which get destroyed by Orgun for their effort.

It's more than a dream: a race of metallic warriors called the Evoluder (no, not ''[[Anime/GaoGaiGar that]]'' Evoluder) have been traveling through the galaxy annihilating all civilizations in their path, and Earth is next. But Orgun, one of the higher-ranking Evoluders, has gone rogue and is determined to make it to Earth first, even if it costs him his life.

Meanwhile, a woman named Dr. Michi Kanzaki had received signals from the moon thanks to the supercomputer I-Zack causing her to build her own mecha. When the Evoluder attack and the EDF's weapons are unable to do anything to it, Dr. Kanzaki's mecha wakes up and breaks out. Dr. Kanzaki goes after it in an attempt to retreive it; at the same time, Tomoru tries to find the place where the aliens have been attacking. In the process, they are both attacked and trapped by the aliens only to be saved by the Doctor's robot. Tomoru and the robot, which turns out to be Orgun fused together, go to fight the aliens.

This series also appeared in ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsW''.

!!This work contains examples of:
* ActionGirl: Yohko Mitsurugi is this because she is the leader of one of the branches in EDF forces that combats the evil Evoludrons that rampaging in city and the space.
* BeamOWar: Orgun's Cross Attack against Zoath's Anti-Matter Cannon
* BigBad: Lady Miku was initially appeared to be this as she is the leader of the Evoludron[[spoiler: ; however, it turns out that Commander Zoath, her dragon, was the one who used her]].
* BigDamnHero: Orgun pulls one when Youko was about to be attacked by one Eyd.
* ByThePowerOfGreyskull: "OOORGUN!"
* TheCameo: [[Anime/GallForce Catty]] in an EDF recruitment commercial.
* CoolCar: Youko's replica Jaguar E-Type. to the point where the first episode stops dead in its tracks for a few seconds to talk about it.
* TheChooserOfTheOne: Orgun chooses Tomoru to be his own vessel by linking his mind and body to him telepathically so that he could save the world from the evil Evoludron.
* TheChosenOne: Tomoru is this because his body connected with Orgun: initially he refused to be one and he considered himself as a victim; however, he ended up accepting his fate anyways.
* TheDragon: Commander Zoa to Lady Miku as he is the one who executes some of her orders and the most active Evoludron to do so[[spoiler: ; later on it was revealed that he was the one behind all the bad things happen]].
* DragonTheirFeet: After Lady Miku accepts Kumi's ideals and then commands all of the Evoludron to retreat from the Earth because there is something worth protecting. Her second in command, Commander Zoa becomes this and then tries to execute the plan to obliterate Earth. [[spoiler: It was also revealed that Commander Zoath was the one using Lady Miku's order as an excuse to let the Evoludrons obliterate anything in their path and to satisfy his thirst for murder.]]
%%* DefectorFromDecadence: Orgun
%%* DoubleWeapon: Orgun uses one in the fight against the Evoluders.
* {{Expy}}:
** ''Anime/TekkamanBlade'' can be seen as a expy of Detonator Orgun to the point that in ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsW'' both D-Boy and Tomoru are worried about being taken over by their powers. [[spoiler:they were also part of the same mission. One ship got captured by the Radam and turned into Tekkamen, the other escaped through a wormhole and became the Evoluders using data stolen and beamed to them by D-Boy's father at the same time he rescued him.]]
** Actually, both are reimaginings of the same show, the original ''Space Knight Anime/{{Tekkaman}}''.
* FieryRedhead: Averted, while Youko does have Red hair she's a rather calm and surprisingly nice person.
%% * GenerationXerox: Evoluders and Earthlings.
%%* KillSat: Zoath's Anti-Matter Cannon.
%%* HeroicSecondWind: Against Zoa, when Tomoru finds out what he's fighting for.
%%* LaResistance: EDF's Solid Armors and Orgun.
* LotusEaterMachine - The P.A.S.F.U., a commercial interactive movie/video game that works in your own dreams.
* MsFanservice: Well, both Dr. Michi Kanzaki and Yohko wore a futuristic outfit that could be almost seen as a bathing suit while still keeping themselves to be a little bit proper and both of them are shown naked in one occasion such as Michi where she tries to help Tomoru in his dream or Yohko when trying to take a shower.
%%* PowerOfLove: Tomoru uses this against Zoa.
* PoweredArmor:
** The EDF uses Birdmen, which [[TransformingMecha transform]] into a flight mode for long-range and aerial combat. They also have a transforming tank armor, and what appears to be a Space version that appears in the recruitment commercial.
** Orgun is like Tekkaman Blade in the sense that they are both considered Super Robots thanks to Banpresto but are small so they could really be considered Powered Armor.
** The Solid Armor used by the EDF [[spoiler:(based on Orgun's second form)]]: Orgun is part of a race that had become so advanced, they ARE the power armor. It's like a robot that digitizes the pilot into data instead of being worn.
* ShoutOut: The shouts are retroactive as Detonator Orgun is rather old but the bird-man suits can make you think of Macross and Appleseed
* {{Tsundere}}: Tomoru appears as this in the second episode as he refused to cooperate with Dr. Michi Kanzaki and said that the EDF just only experimenting him.
* TransformingMecha: On her second sortie against the Evoluders, Yohko uses a heavier Birdman unit.
