Go To

* WesternAnimation/TwelveOunceMouse:
** There's a shark named Shark, an eyeball named Eye, and Peanut Cop, who is not an actual peanut, but is shaped like one, and is a cop. The main character's full name, Mouse Fitzgerald, falls under this trope since he's a mouse.
** Rectangular Businessman is a square, which is a specific type of rectangle even if not normally thought of as suchA rectangle is any four-sided shape with all right angles. A square is a rectangle whose sides are all of equal length.
* WesternAnimation/AdventureTime: Many characters, including Mr. Pig.
* WesternAnimation/Aladdin has the genie named Genie. Lampshaded in one episode of WesternAnimation/AladdinTheSeries, where he meets a female genie named Eden. When he proudly shouts "Hi, I'm Genie!" she snarks "oh, that's original."
* WesternAnimation/ALittleCurious has several members of its cast with names like this. "Mop" is a mop, "Mr. String" is a piece of string, "Plush" is a plush dog, "Little Cup" is a small cup, "Pad" is a notepad, and "Pencil" is a no. 2 pencil. There's a pair of mary janes named "Mary Jane", but her older sister (a pair of sneakers) has a PunnyName of "Lacey" instead.
* Most of the cast of WesternAnimation/AlmostNakedAnimals. Oddly, Howie the dog is the only exception.
* The living hotdog in WesternAnimation/TheAmazingWorldOfGumball turns out to really be named Hot Dog Guy.
** There is also a donut cop named Donut Cop, a turd named Mr. Poop, a male doctor named Dr. Man, a butt doctor named Dr. Butt, a green gummy bear named The Green Bear, a fuzz ball named Fuzzball, a dog named Dog, a cat named Kitty, and a mushroom named Mushroom.
* WesternAnimation/AngelsFriends: Dolce/Sweet has a Butterfly familiar named Butterfly.
* WesternAnimation/AnimalMechanicals has a unicorn named Unicorn, a mouse named Mouse and a sasquatch named Sasquatch. In fact, all the characters are named after what they are.
* The entire cast of WesternAnimation/AppleAndOnion is this; one episode had the titular duo name a cat "Cat".
* Most of WesternAnimation/TheBabaloos are just named after what they are- Baby Towel, Teaspoon, Mr. Bowl, Mrs. Coffeepot, Mr. Vac, etc.- although there are exceptions (such as Victor the trophy).
* Uniqua from WesternAnimation/TheBackyardigans. Turns out her species is called the uniqua.
* Bird from WesternAnimation/BobTheBuilder.
* WesternAnimation/BoyGirlDogCatMouseCheese: There is indeed a dog named Dog. And a cat named Cat, and a boy named Boy, and so on...
* WesternAnimation/CatDog is about a cat named Cat and a dog named Dog who were born fused together.
* WesternAnimation/Centaurworld: The main characters include a horse named Horse and her rider, who is named Rider.
* WesternAnimation/ChipNDaleRescueRangers: No points for guessing Fat Cat's species (though it's also got a double meaning as he is a wealthy animal businessman/criminal too). Also, his henchman Mole is a mole. For that matter, ALizardNamedLiz Chip is a chipmunk (which gets a lampshade hung on it in Webcomic/OfMiceAndMayhem).
* WesternAnimation/ChristmasInTattertown: A girl named Debbie has a living stuffed dog, who's called simply "Dog".
* WesternAnimation/CityIsland2022: Watt's grandmother is a candle named Candle.
* WesternAnimation/CodenameKidsNextDoor has the The Delightful Children From Down the Lane's father be named Father.
* WesternAnimation/CowAndChicken who are respectively a cow and a chicken.
* WesternAnimation/CupcakeAndDinoGeneralServices stars, of course, a cupcake named Cupcake, and a dinosaur named Dino. Also of note is their grandmother, a piece of steak named Grandma Steak.
* WesternAnimation/DannyPhantom: One recurring character is a wolflike ghost named Wulf.
* In WesternAnimation/Detention, Shareena has a pet pig named Pig.
* Series/DieSendungMitDerMaus: "Trude und ihr Tier". (May count as subversion, as TierAnimal is no animal anyway, but belongs to BenevolentMonsters.) An episode to name him ended in a fail. (And there where he comes from he probably has one anyway.)
** The show's mascots may also count. It's never come up onscreen one way or another, but WordOfGod persistently refers to them as simply Maus, Elefanten & Ente (mouse, elephant and duck).
* WesternAnimation/TheDogAndPonyShow has the titular duo, an anthropomorphic dog and pony.
* On WesternAnimation/DoraTheExplorer, Dora's puppy is named "Perrito," which is Spanish for "puppy."
* One of Webby's friends in WesternAnimation/DuckTales2017 is a hummingbird girl named Violet Sabrewing.
* WesternAnimation/DudleyDoRights horse is named Horse.
* In the special The Easter Bunny is Coming To Town Sunny and his friends decide to deliver eggs in the somber town of Town.
* The titular main character of WesternAnimation/FacesMusicParty is a face named "Face".
* The titular canine of WesternAnimation/FamilyDog is never referred to by any name other than "the dog." His Christmas stocking even says "Dog" on it!
* WesternAnimation/FiremanSam: Series 6 introduces a lamb named Lambykins.
* WesternAnimation/TheForgottenToys: One of the main characters is a teddy bear named Teddy.
* WesternAnimation/TheFoxbusters: Dog the dog.
* Literature/Franklin: Practically everyone besides the title turtle. His friends include a bear named Bear, a rabbit named Rabbit, a beaver named Beaver, a fox named Fox, a snail named Snail etc. Apparently only turtles are creative enough to give their offspring names not taken after their respective species. Turtle, however, is his SpeciesSurname.
** Averted in the French Dub. Bear is named Martin, Snail is named Arnaud, Rabbit is Basil and Beaver is Lili. In the French Canadian Dub, Franklin's name is changed to Benjamin.
* WesternAnimation/FredTheCaveman: Fred named his dog "dog".
* WesternAnimation/TheGarfieldShow: One of the recurring characters is a Rottweiler who is actually named Rottweiler.
* WesternAnimation/GeorgeOfTheJungle: When he gets in a scrape, he makes his escape with the help of his friend, an ape named Ape.
* WesternAnimation/GlennMartinDDS: The main family, the Martins’ pet dog is named “Canine” which is the family where a dog belongs in. This has a DoubleMeaning, as it reflects the titular father's occupation as a dentist, referring to the canine teeth.
* Bear is this in WesternAnimation/GoldieAndBear, except that it's not quite played straight - Bear is actually his last name. His first name is actually Jack, but when he was little his parents also called him "Baby Bear" and "Bear" ended up sticking.
* WesternAnimation/HamsterAndGretel: Gretel's superpowered pet hamster is named, well, Hamster.
* WesternAnimation/HappyMonsterBand: Each band member sounds similar to the name of their colors. Ink is pink, L.O. is yellow, Frred is red, and Bluz is blue.
* WesternAnimation/InfinityTrain includes "the Cat." Curiously avoided with the dog character, however, who is named (King) Atticus.
* WesternAnimation/ItsPony stars a talking pony named Pony.
** Pony's ArchNemesis is a dog named Dog.
* WesternAnimation/JuliusJr: Worry Bear sticks out like a sore thumb as the other characters have fantastic names like Julius and Sheree.
* WesternAnimation/Kaeloo: The name "Kaeloo" sounds like the Japanese word for frog, "kaeru". Kaeloo, the main character of the show, is a frog.
* The Souphanousinphones' dog in WesternAnimation/KingOfTheHill is named Doggy.
* This trope applies to the members of the Furious Five in WesternAnimation/KungFuPandaLegendsOfAwesomeness, whose names are Tigress, Crane, Monkey, Viperess, and Mantis. The show makes fun of this trope in an episode in which the Furious Five forget who they are and Crane proceeds to question whether villain of the week, Taotie, is also named for his animal.
* In Westernanimation/TheLegendOfKorra, Lord Zuko has a dragon named Druk; druk is Bhutanese for '(Thunder) Dragon'.
* In WesternAnimation/LegendQuest, Alebrije is both the name of a character and his species. He is said to have a real name, but it is too hard for humans to pronounce, and thus is not known.
* WesternAnimation/LetsGoLuna: The Moon is named Luna. "Luna" is the word for "moon" in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Latin, and Romanian.
* One may wonder if Literature/LittleBear would still keep the "Little" part of his name when he grows up. Likewise, his friends include a hen named Hen, an owl named Owl, a duck named Duck and a cat named Cat. Averted with Mitzi the monkey, Nofeet the snake and Tutu the dog, however.
* In WesternAnimation/LooneyTunes, the canine foil of Foghorn Leghorn had been identified on model sheets as Barnyard Dawg.
** Also, the bull from the short WesternAnimation/BullyForBugs is called Toro, which is Spanish for bull.
* WesternAnimation/MikeLuAndOg: Played straight with Goat and Pig, but subverted with Spiny the porcupine.
* Subverted with Pigeon in WesternAnimation/MikeTysonMysteries. His actual name is Richard since he's a human who was magically cursed to be a pigeon, but none of the other characters care enough to remember his real name nor does he care enough to correct them regularly.
* WesternAnimation/MiloMurphysLaw has an interesting spin on this: Milo's dog is named "Diogee", pronounced like "D-O-G." (For bonus points, this is actually a Tuckerization of co-creator Dan Povenmire's sister's dog.)
* In WesternAnimation/TheMoxyShow, Moxy's best friend is a flea named Flea.
* WesternAnimation/Mr Bogus gives us a rat named Ratty and a mole named Mole, who serve as Bogus's main adversaries.
* WesternAnimation/MrMoon features a crab constellation named Crab. This is a rare Trope example, as several characters are based on the Zodiac constellations, and the real life constellation based on the crab happens to be named Cancer.
* Birch of WesternAnimation/MyLifeMe has a cat named Neko.
* WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic has Zecora the zebra (The word "zecora" was, but is no longer, the word used for zebra by the Oromo people of east Africa), Mayor Mare and DJ PON-3; the latter two are AscendedFanon. Surprisingly for a children's franchise, they usually manage to avoid this.
* WesternAnimation/MyPetMonsters title character is a monster named Monster.
* WesternAnimation/OscarsOrchestra: In the episode "Battle On Ice", the orchestra meets a viola named... Viola. Made more notable by the fact that the other instruments' names avert this.
* WesternAnimation/Oswald:
** Subverted with the sunflower character named "Daisy". And Oswald’s pet dog is named “Weenie”.
** "Cactus Polly" is a cactus.
* WesternAnimation/TheOwlHouse:
* WesternAnimation/PeepAndTheBigWideWorld: The main trio, Peep, Chirp, and Quack, are birds and they are named after sounds birds make. Specifically, Peep is a chick that goes “peep” and Quack is a duck.
* Played straight in WesternAnimation/PegPlusCat where half of the title duo is a cat named Cat, a pig named Pig, a small chicken named Little Chicken, the group of teens are called The Teens and many other examples.
* On WesternAnimation/PeterRabbit, almost all of the characters have actual names (though may occasionally have a SpeciesSurname), but the shrew character is simply "Shrew."
* WesternAnimation/PigGoatBananaCricket stars a pig named Pig, goat named Goat, and a cricket named Cricket. The latter used to be a Mantis, but things changed.
* WesternAnimation/Pocoyos Pato (Spanish for "duck").
* A side character in WesternAnimation/TheRenAndStimpyShow is a horse named Mr. Horse.
* The title characters of WesternAnimation/RobotAndMonster. Interestingly, all the other characters are robots and monsters, yet have distinct names.
* Rock Paper Scissors: The titular trio, Rock, Paper, and Scissors are all named after the eponymous game.
* WesternAnimation/RosiesRules: Rosie's sidekick is a cat named Gatita, which means "kitten" in Spanish.
* The titular pet in WesternAnimation/SarahAndDuck.
* WesternAnimation/TheSecretSaturdays have a pet Komodo dragon named Komodo.
* Sheep, the main character of WesternAnimation/SheepInTheBigCity. According to the show's pilot, Farmer John apparently named him Sheep because he looked like a sheep when he was born.
* WesternAnimation/SheRaPrincessOfPower: Imp is an imp named Imp. It's never clarified if he's part of a species, that particular class of demon, or even if it's just a nickname but his design makes it pretty clear what the animators were invoking. This is backed up by the fact that several of the characters such as Leech, Mantenna, and even Hordak are using codenames as revealed in their bios, whereas nothing appears under Imp's alias.
* The titular character of WesternAnimation/SheriffCalliesWildWest is of course, a Calico cat.
* WesternAnimation/SkunkFu has all the characters named after their species: Skunk, Rabbit, Fox, Pig, and Panda.
* WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons: In the episode Eight Misbehavin, the mascot of SHØP is a large anthropomorphic Allen Wrench named "Alan Wrench". Which Homer comments on "Hee hee hee, He's named after what he is".
* WesternAnimation/SonicTheHedgehogSatAM:
** Bunnie Rabbot is a FunnyAnimal cyborg rabbit. Justified in that "Bunnie" is an actual name.
** Sonic's non-humanoid dog is named Muttski.
** Cat is an elderly cat.
** Downplayed with Lupe, who's a wolf.
* WesternAnimation/SouthPark:
** Cartman's cat is called Mr. Kitty. Ironically, "Mr." Kitty is female.
** Parodied with the holiday episode, "Woodland Critter Christmas", where this trope is combined with BuffySpeak. The critters (who also happen to be ) are named as follows: Squirrely the squirrel, Rabbity the rabbit, Beavery the beaver, Beary the bear, Porcupiney the porcupine, Skunky the skunk, Foxy the fox, Deery the deer, Woodpeckery the woodpecker, Mousey the mouse, Racoony the raccoon, and Chickadee-y the chickadee. It makes sense considering the entire story was cooked up by Cartman at the end of the episode.
* WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants:
** A plankton (sort of) named Plankton. "Plankton's Army" reveals that his full name is Sheldon J. Plankton, so it's technically a SpeciesSurname.
** The title character is a sponge named [=SpongeBob=]. Such a name was considered a necessity to convey to audiences that [=SpongeBob=] is a sponge, not an anthropomorphic block of CartoonCheese.
** Squidward, who is an octopus, not a squid.
** A crab named Mr. Krabs. Like Plankton, it's technically a SpeciesSurname (his first name is Eugene), but he's on a LastNameBasis with almost everyone.
* WesternAnimation/StarTrekLowerDecks: In "Much Ado About Boimler", this is done literally with Tendi's dog-like creation, which is officially named "The Dog".
* WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse:
** Steven adopts a magical pink lion and names it "Lion", and later on creates a pumpkin Planimal which gets named "Pumpkin".
** The Gems all look humanoid, but their physical forms are actually holograms and they're literally just their gemstone. So we have a pearl named "Pearl", a ruby named "Ruby", etc., despite the fact that there are more than one of each type. In cases of confusion, they use serial numbers - for instance, the "main" Amethyst is revealed to be named Amethyst Facet-5 Cut-8XM. The only exceptions are the Diamonds, who are distinguished by color and have only one of each.
** Because some Gems assume other species should follow their conventions, they have trouble with human characters' names. Peridot initially refers to the eponymous character as "the Steven" and presumes other humans are also Stevens.
* Inverted in WesternAnimation/StuntDawgs. Their pet dog is named Human.
* Hedgehog from WesternAnimation/SummerCampIsland is a FunnyAnimal hedgehog girl. She's the OddNameOut amongst the characters as everyone else has names like "Oscar" and "Alice".
* WesternAnimation/TangledTheSeries:
** Rapunzel's handmaiden/bodyguard Cassandra has an owl companion named... Owl.
** Varian's pet raccoon is called Rudiger; in this case this trope is combined with BilingualBonus, since that is German for "raccoon".
* In WesternAnimation/TazMania, Taz has a pet named 'Dog'. Who is a turtle. Who thinks he is a dog.
* Terrytoons' Deputy Dawg had a character named Al E. Gator.
* In WesternAnimation/ThomasAndFriends, the main diesel character is named simply Diesel.
* WesternAnimation/ThunderCats1985 and WesternAnimation/ThunderCats2011 does have some Odd Names Out, but many of the cast of Catfolk have names denoting their species: Lion-O, Cheetara, Tygra, Jaga, Panthro, Leo and Panthera, as does enemy Chameleon Khamai, and TeamPet Snarf, a snarf.
* Subverted in WesternAnimation/TomAndJerry; Tom's name is actually short for Thomas, and is not just a reflection on the fact that he is, in fact, a tomcat.
* In WesternAnimation/TotalDramas first season, D.J. finds a rabbit during the camping challenge, adopts it as a pet and names it Bunny.
* Several characters in WesternAnimation/Unikitty including Unikitty herself, her brother Puppycorn (both of them unicorn hybrids, Unikitty being a cat/unicorn hybrid and Puppycorn a dog/unicorn), and their bodyguard Hawkodile.
* Dick Dastardly's canine minion on WesternAnimation/WackyRaces (and its myriad spinoffs and updates) is Muttley.
* In WesternAnimation/WandaAndTheAlien, Alien's name actually is "Alien", as revealed in one episode where the pair visit Alien's family when Alien is sick.
* In WesternAnimation/WeBareBears, The main characters are Grizzly the grizzly bear and Panda the panda bear (lampshaded in one episode). Downplayed with Ice Bear the polar bear.
* Downplayed with WesternAnimation/TheWildPuffalumps, as their names are actually the name of the animals that they are based on.
* On WesternAnimation/Wishfart, Dez's friend and roommate is a talking puffin named Puffin.
* Every character in WesternAnimation/WordWorld. Which makes a certain amount of sense, since most objects in Word World are made of the letters that spell what it is.
* The title character of WesternAnimation/WhateverHappenedToRobotJones is a robot whose first name is Robot.
* WesternAnimation/YoungJustice2010 has the alien robot sphere named Sphere and the albino wolf named Wolf. Hangingd when Conner (who named the above two) is introduced to a monkey named Monkey. He says that's a good name.
