Added DiffLines:

* SugarWiki/AwesomeArt: Jorge Gutierrez did a ''fantastic'' job of translating his signature artstyle into 3D. And that's not even getting into how the Land of the Remembered looks.

* CounterpartComparison:
** A lot of Xibalba's design choices (his [[LeanAndMean general body shape]] and [[BeardOfEvil beard]] in particular) and his [[TricksterGod general personality]] reminds some people of [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic Discord]]. Cue fanart of Xibalba/Discord fusions. Sometimes they are paired up with La Muerte/Celestia fusions. It doesn't hurt that Creator/RonPerlman and Creator/JohnDeLancie have similar sounding voices.
** Not as common but still extant, a few people have noted Xibalba's appearance might take some cues from [[WesternAnimation/SamuraiJack Aku]].
** Quite a few people have drawn [[Webcomic/{{Homestuck}} Aradia]] as La Muerte.
** [[WesternAnimation/{{Coco}} Miquel]] is very similar in many ways to Manolo. Both are male leads whose names start with "M," and find themselves at odds with a questionable family tradition, especially when that family is suppressing their actual passion for music making. This culminates in a journey to The Land of the Dead where they team up with deceased relatives to make things right.
** Speaking of ''Coco,'' Joaquin could be seen as a GoodCounterpart to [[spoiler: Ernesto De La Cruz]]. Both characters [[spoiler: are beloved figures in their hometown's histories, but became beloved through dishonest means, which put them at odds with their HeterosexualLifePartners. Joaquin, however, [[HeelRealization realized where his more questionable actions were leading him]] and gave up the crutch that was responsible for a lot of his greatness, while reconciling with his best friend. Ernesto, however, was unrepentant to the end and tried to cover up the source of his greatness [[UnPerson at all]] [[WouldHurtAChild costs]], ultimately betraying his supposed best friend.]]

** In the Japanese dub of the film, Manolo is voiced by Creator/SubaruKimura, whose most well-known role is voicing [[Anime/{{Doraemon}} Gian in the 2005 version of the series]], and he is a DreadfulMusician.

* MagnificentBastard: Land of the Forgotten ruler Xibalba grows bored of his reign and makes a wager for their kingdoms with the Land of the Remembered ruler La Muerte, concerning a LoveTriangle between Manolo, Joaquin and Maria, Xibalba betting on Joaquin winning Maria's heart and Le Muerte on Manolo. Disguising himself as a beggar, Xibalba gives Joaquin a medal to make him immortal; later causes Maria to fall into a coma during Manolo's attempt at a heartfelt confession; and leads Manolo to his death. Though outed for his cheating, Xibalba then creates a new bet with Manolo having fight against all the bulls his bull fighting family fought in the past and gracefully accepts his defeat after he does so, honoring his deal and reconciling with La Muerte.

** When Pixar announced ''WesternAnimation/{{Coco}}'', there was a lot of hot debate about whether or not ''Coco'' is a direct ripoff of (some going so far as to claim that Pixar stole the idea from Gutierrez[[note]]Worth pointing out this is an ''incredibly'' unlikely scenario: Pixar only accepts in-house pitches, meaning Gutierrez couldn't have pitched his idea to Pixar even if he wanted to, and Pixar had announced they were interested in doing a Day of the Dead movie as far back as 2012, a good year before this movie was even in production[[/note]]).
