** A common criticism about Seasons 3 and 4 is how the first halves of those seasons lacked an actual plot, with the more interesting Eclipsa plot being pushed into the background of the romance plot and racism plot. This type of thing already happened with the first halves of Seasons 1 and 2. But the only difference is that Seasons 1 and 2 established a main villain, Ludo in this case, very early, thus giving the first two seasons' first halves a true major plot.

** While Jackie is a cool skater girl that rarely loses her temper in canon, fanon portrayals commonly villainize her into being an abusive and/or unfaithful partner to Marco, and holding an extreme grudge against Star for having feelings towards him to the point of hating her outright, despite the fact that Jackie herself was fully supportive of the two getting together in the show proper, and quietly and politely broke up with Marco without holding anything against him or Star.

* MemeticMolester: Star's Mewberty transformation from the episode with the same name is commonly characterized as this due to her CreepyCute design, obsession with boys, and rather questionable intentions towards Oskar and Marco. Whether or not she's portrayed with a cute infatuation in an innocent context or becomes much more sexually driven depends on the author.

* [[DesignatedHero/StarVsTheForcesOfEvil Designated Hero]]

* DesignatedHero:
** Star is often shown to be hypocritical with a severe case of NeverMyFault and hypocrisy with how often she expects others to listen to her and she rarely does the same for them. Not helping is how she gets very impulsive and her development [[AesopAmnesia rarely sticks]]. [[spoiler:Destroying all magic, essentially committing genocide]], in the series finale didn't help her case.
** Glossaryk can also be considered this. He's intended to be a neutral character with a sense of mysticism, yet he's never clear with his intentions, and shows no regret/remorse when he shows tough love with those he's helping others, showing a ''very'' smug snideness. His scenes where he feels unappreciated for his efforts makes him look like an UngratefulBastard.
** Solaria herself comes across as this in [[spoiler:the finale]]. [[spoiler:Her disowning Mina by turning away as she's crying out for her help comes across as cruel and hypocritical on her part especially since she ''chose and created'' what eventually became Mina's current state downright to causing her to lose her mind! Supplementary books like the ''Magic Book of Spells'' where her entire entry on monsters consists of racist ramblings and creative ways to destroy monsters on the pretense that they are "much happier that way" don't exactly help either and only make her sudden Heel-Face Turn come out of nowhere and rejecting Mina less heroic and more of a KickTheDog moment.]]
** Pony Head '''''really''''' falls into this. In her first appearance, she tried '''''murdering''''' Marco [[DisproportionateRetribution out of petty jealousy]]. Subsequent episodes try showing more of her humanity, but with how narcissistic and egotistical she is, it doesn't work.
** Starting in season 3, Marco is this for much of the same reasons as Star. His more jerkish, stubborn, and standoffish behavior is simply meant to be him being too confident in himself, but he's such a smug narcissist about it that he comes across as cold and selfish, and he's never properly called out for it.

* Pony Head, due to being an ItsAllAboutMe AttentionWhore with NoIndoorVoice who is petty jerk towards her friends, especially Marco. Not helping matters is [[AesopAmnesia her inability to remember any lesson she learned in a previous episode]], a general lack of character growth, and [[TookALevelInJerkass taking a level in jerkass]] from Season 3 onwards. Many were even disappointed that [[spoiler:despite being a magical flying horse head, she ''wasn't'' killed when Star destroyed magic, or even really inconvenienced by it at all]].

The episode also reveals that [[spoiler:her real name is Meteora Butterfly]].
** A very unpopular former queen comes again to power after what amounts to the deposing of the next-to-last member of an alternate line of rulers, that had been appreciated by their people partly on the basis of said queen's villification, and many malcontents decide to build a community around the figure of said deposed ruler without the latter doing anything to discourage them except at the very start. ** Tom. While his CharacterDevelopment throughout Season 3 and 4 is done well, most fans tend to ignore what he did in the first two seasons due to what Star and Marco did to him while he was dating Star. While it was wrong of Star to cheat on him with Marco and to get angry at Tom for not telling her that he knew, all while not exactly being the best girlfriend to him, Tom's actions in his debut (which involves tricking Star into bonding her soul with him to the Blood Moon without her knowledge) and his animosity towards Marco (even cursing him with the Naysaya) aren't any better either. Sure, he eventually realizes that Star is her own person and befriends Marco, only to be done dirty by both, but that doesn't fully erase what he did to them at the beginning.

This includes the scene in "Camping Trip" where Marco literally states quote, "I'm not her boyfriend." Even Adam [=McArthur=] gets in on this. He says in [[https://youtu.be/aqjCPjZByrw?t=12m53s this video]] that his interpretation of the ending of "The Banagic Incident" is that Star swatted away Marco's pudding not out of anger that he underestimated her, but because she thinks the Banagic Wand has "friendship magic" and she doesn't want to be JustFriends with him.

In the series, this is only mentioned once and is heavily implied this goes away in-universe once he becomes involved in Star's shenanigans (given now he's always involved in dangerous stuff it wouldn't be logical for people to believe his presence will equal safety), yet in fanart and fanfics he's constantly refered as the safety kid. * SalvagedStory: In "Running with Scissors" Marco enters another universe where time flows differently, living 30 years before being returned to 14. However, the episode strongly implies that he remained 30 years old ''mentally'', which many fans saw as giving some...disconcerting implications to his many love triangles with the teenage cast. In the live streams, they clarify that while he's aware of his time in Hekapoo's dimension, the memories are blurry and dreamlike rather then personal, confirming he is indeed still mentally 14 rather then a 30 year old in a 14 year old's body.
