** Riley received a lot of love from viewers for being one of the first people in town to actually be nice to Abby. Their chemistry actually inspired a lot of audiences to believe that she was a better choice as Abby’s love interest (see below).

* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Harper big time. While feeling forced into the closet by her conservative family ''is'' sympathetic, her treatment of Abby for the entire movie continually degrades as she regresses into her old ways, and becomes borderline abusive. The fact that, despite her apology and promise to change, Abby is given no evidence that she is capable of this, and it does not undo the harm she has done. Yes she was forced out of the closet by her sister, and eventually admitted to her and Abby's relationship, but that doesn't change the fact that she lied to Abby for months, deliberately (and needlessly) placed her in a horrifically uncomfortable situation, ignored her, gaslit her, and placed her in a situation she literally could not escape. Many viewers were put off by the fact that, despite all of this, Abby forgives her and takes her back.

** The hilarious John steals most of his scenes, and he manages to make fish murder and ''stalking'' endearing. On top of that, many find his heartfelt defense of Harper toward the end a standout moment in the film.

* SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped: John's speech to Abby about how not everybody has a good experience when coming out.
-->'''John:''' What did your parents say when you told them you were gay?\\
'''Abby:''' ... They told me they loved me, and supported me.\\
'''John:''' That's amazing. My dad kicked me out of the house and didn't talk to me for 13 years after I told him. Everybody's story is different. There's your version and my version and every version in between. But the one thing that all those stories have in common is that moment right before you say those words. When your heart is racing and you don't know what's coming next. That moments really terrifying. And once you say those words, you can't un-say them. A chapter has ended and a new one has began. You have to be ready for that. And you can't do it for anyone else.

** There's also the unambiguously cruel way in which Harper outed Riley, which is largely brushed off but which [[Film/LoveSimon other, thematically similar films]] have treated as a MoralEventHorizon.
