* OvershadowedByControversy: In many visual novel circles, it's difficult to bring up ''Grisaia no Kajitsu'' without mentioning its then-localization company Sekai Project and the many controversies that spawned from it. Mainly in regards to their questionable translations, business practices (especially with Website/{{Kickstarter}}), and the antics of their CEO Dovac, who infamously went on Website/{{Twitter}} rants against fan patchers attempting to bypass their distribution policies. ''Grisaia'' was in the center of the controversy thanks to in large part of unfulfilled Kickstarter promises and the fan patch debacle that unfolded in late 2016, which the visual novel itself once hosted.

* CounterpartComparison: So, a skilled assassin who became a bodyguard of a girl whose parents are AbusiveParents, and teaching her how to survive then eventually involves some form of BodyguardCrush and RescueRomance? Are we talking about Makina's route or ''Film/TheProfessional''?

* CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming
** "I'm really glad you were born. Thank you."
*** From another completely different route: "I'm so very glad I was born."
** At the end credits of Michiru's final episode, she's playing around with Meowmel. [[spoiler: This and the cat's appearance before Michiru finally decides to live indicates that even through death, Meowmel is still with her.]]

* AwesomeMusic: The opening theme [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kp5TchRBoK0 The Final Fractal]] is really good to listen to with stunning visuals of the opening to back it up. Perfect for starting the visual novel with.

* CompleteMonster: [[PsychopathicWomanchild Kiyoka Irisu]], was born and raised to be the next head of the corrupt [[EvilInc Irisu clan]], a family behind political crimes and assassinations. When her husband tried to expose the family's sinister actions, she casually [[AbusiveParents ordered her daughter]], Makina Irisu, kidnapped to lure out her husband and have him executed in front of his daughter. Left for a week with the rotting corpse of his father, Makina suffered severe mental issues and was disowned by her mother. When Kiyoka needed Makina back due to needing a new heir when her other daughter Sarina was in critical condition, Makina threatened to expose her actions in order to get rid of her. Kiyoka responded by ordering her daughter's workplace to be destroyed and Makina herself assassinated, as well as anyone in her way. When Makina was placed into critical condition as well due to being shot, Kiyoka contemplated ending her life support.

* TearJerker: Once you hear the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rta5-jcNgvA Waratte Itakute]] theme, it can really make you want to have a stream of tears. At least, the troper can't help but want to.

* GenreDeconstruction: The series can easily be seen as that for subverting many of the common tropes of a highschool harem series. For instance, instead of the main character being an insecure, easily flustered idiot who can´t talk to girls properly and doesn´t have much common sense, Yuuji is a hyper-competent, matter-of-factly BadAss and doesn´t get embarrassed by the girls antics and advances. If Tropes come up, they are usually mocked immediately. [[spoiler:It helps that he is a childsoldier with extensive experience as an asassin, military training and service with the US Marine Corps, and has had sex with adult women already in his youth.]]

* BrokenBase: The visual novel community, especially Fuwanovel, seems to be split on either loving or hating Grisaia for various reasons. So much so that simply mentioning Grisaia on the forums alone is almost guaranteed to be FlameBait.

* SoOkayItsAverage: The general consensus of the visual novel by many, including users of Fuwanovel. It's been considered to be a decent visual novel with many flaws, cliches, and story pacing issues.
