* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Enforced. The splatbooks did not provide character alignments for most of the provided [=NPCs=] characters, stipulating that [=GMs=] should feel free to set the alignments and objectives of the characters in ways that made sense for the campaign.

Added DiffLines:

* CultClassic: Birthright sold poorly and was ultimately cancelled shortly after the Creator/WizardsOfTheCoast takeover for that reason. However, its unique mechanics and themes encouraging politics, intrigue, and empire-building over hack-and-slash adventuring made it stand out amongst other tabletop RPG settings and it developed a small but loyal following as a result. To this day, there are still regular calls for [=WotC=] to revisit the setting and update the mechanics for the current ruleset.

** Rhuobhe loathed how humans once mistreated elven forests and became a notorious hunter of them, earning the name Manslayer for his savage zeal. Joining Azrai to exterminate humankind, Rhuobhe was the only elf who didn't desert him when it became clear what a monster Azrai was. Establishing his own nation, Rhuobhe seeks to kill humans, even helping to manipulate wars to trick them into killing one another. Rhuobhe even declares once he has killed every human man, woman and child, he will move on to goblins as well, even willing to torture and kill any elves who disagree with his genocidal mania, openly stating that he would see every elf dead if it meant humankind's extermination.

* ScrappyMechanic: The almost-literal SuperpowerLottery that is Bloodline powers. Some of them are so weak they're basically useless, some of them are so powerful they can wreck entire campaigns, some of them are just completely opposed to a given player's class and concept, and they're all on the same table and determined randomly. Azrai's powers in particular can potentially leave someone unplayable.

* DuelingWorks: Not exactly "duelling" since they're published by the same company, but it makes an interesting companion piece to ComicBook/IHateFairyland. They both Deconstruction deconstruct the "child lost in magical world" genre by showing the child grown to adulthood in the magical world, they're both violent and gory, and both feature highly morally ambiguous protagonists. However, while I Hate Fairyland is a BlackComedy set in a cartoonish CrapsaccharineWorld which the protagonist is trapped in and trying to escape, Birthright is a serious UrbanFantasy story set on Earth which the protagonist is trying to bring the magical world into.
* InexplicablyIdenticalIndividuals: When Lore was the Chosen One, he looked exactly like Mikey. His

* SlidingScaleOfVillainEffectiveness: God-King Lore ranks High. High enough that five of the most powerful mages in Terrenos came to the conclusion that keeping up the fight was so pointless that the only alternative was to escape to another world and lock the door behind them. High enough to not just defeat the ChosenOne raised from childhood for the sole purpose of killing him, but break his will and turn him into Lore's own assassin.

Succumbing to lust for power and his own sadism, Lore enacted a nightmarish dictatorship where countless innocents were murdered, tortured, and subjected to further atrocities. Seeking to bring his rule to Earth, Lore seemingly seduces the young hero Mikey to his cause, binding him to a Nevermind spirit that tortures him should he think of betraying Lore while having Mikey hunt down and kill the Mages--including Lore's own daughter Mastema--keeping Terrenos apart from Earth. Keeping Mikey's mentor Rook as a tortured slave for years, Lore gleefully launches an invasion of Earth to massacre most of its population, showing how far a hero can fall.

However, while I Hate Fairyland is a BlackComedy set in a colourful CrapsaccharineWorld which the protagonist is trapped in and trying to escape, Birthright is a serious UrbanFantasy story set on Earth which the protagonist is trying to bring the magical world into.
