* AnAesop:
** Change is a constant part of living life, and you have to help advance them and make the changes positive ones instead of pining for better times (Steven) or lashing out (Spinel).
** A related Aesop is that you can't ''force'' someone to change, even for the better; they have to ''want'' it themselves.
** As shown by Spinel's backstory, friends are not playthings. They have feelings to be considered, which makes it cruel to just have fun with them and then cast them aside once you're no longer entertained.
** There's no such thing as a "HappilyEverAfter", at least as it's traditionally defined, in {{real life}}. No matter what you overcome, there will always be more {{conflict}} you'll have to face, and believing otherwise is only setting yourself up for disappointment.
** [[FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse Being abused doesn't justify being abusive]]. Just because you've been hurt, no matter how damaging or traumatic it was for you, it doesn't give you the right to turn around and take it out on other people, especially people who had nothing to do with it and/or are trying to help you. Pink being abused by the other Diamonds doesn't excuse her tricking Spinel and leaving her behind, and Spinel being abandoned by Pink and placed under [[GoMadFromTheIsolation solitary confinement]] for 6,000 years doesn't excuse her trying to destroy all life on Earth.

* WakeUpCall: Steven has gotten comfortable with his HappilyEverAfter and doesn't want anything to change. Then Spinel comes crashing in threatening to take that happy ending away, forcing him to jump back into the fight and save the world again while learning AnAesop about change.

** During the song “Happily Ever After”, each of the four core Crystal Gems states how they've changed from how they originally were; guess what the rejuvenator ends up revoking.

* ExplainExplainOhCrap: When Ruby is impressed by how Sapphire's predictions of the future are right and asks her what she predicts will happen next, Sapphire starts explaining events just before they happen as "hijinks ensue". She maintains her usual stoic tone throughout this, only to gain a panicked tone towards the end as she explains the saw will continue until it causes and anvil to fall... and Ruby will be shattered.

* NowWhichOneWasThatVoice: Possibly due to the cast list appearing at the beginning of the movie, and unlike the main series, voice actors are not credited to specific characters.

* TheEchoer: After being rebooted by Spinel's Rejuvenator, Amethyst reverts back to what she was when she emerged and parrots everything everyone says - and mimics them by shapeshifting, too. [[spoiler: She eventually turns back to normal.]]

* ActorAllusion: Steven and Greg's new fusion Steg, and Amethyst and Pearl's fusion Opal, have a duet together. Their voice actors, Ted Leo, and Aimee Mann, are a rock band called The Both.

* DisproportionateRetribution: PlayedForLaughs. Amethyst, Pearl, and Connie draw their weapons when Steven brings Spinel downstairs to the living room.
