[[WMG: Harvey knows about the Tatsyrups]]
While Val wants to keep Benjamin at the Dentons' house because she wants a son in her life, Harvey also tries to keep him at home (through his many rules and customs) just to prevent him from going on the hike--because if Benjamin goes into the hills, he's bound to drop by the local shop. Harvey may be the only local who knows what Tubbs & Edward Tatsyrup do, and he (being obsessed with order in his life) can't be bothered with the trouble & stress of reporting them to anyone else. It seems to be only partway into Series 2 that Harvey gets the [[spoiler: "keep Benjamin as a pet"]] idea, so until then Harvey is right in claiming that he cares about his nephew, and he's inconveniencing him for a valid reason.

[[WMG: Harvey knows about the Tatsyrups and wants to protect Benjamin]]
Harvey and Val are the only locals who know about Tubbs & Edward Tatsyrup (and the horrible things they do), but they prefer to leave them be, knowing how dangerous they are. So, when Benjamin shows up, Harvey & Val intend to protect him by keeping him at home; they know that a hiking trip will probably bring him through the hills to the local shop. Thus by distracting him until late afternoon, then setting an 8 pm curfew, they keep him from getting killed. They really ''do'' care for their nephew, and they only let him go after he hurts their feelings.

Later, in the series 2 finale, Harvey & Val were the only ones who could have explained that the Tatsyrups weren't causing the epidemic, but of course they're locked in the basement during the crucial moment.
