As we saw in the second movie, Alex never learned to fight due to being separated from his parents as a child. And considering how old he was when it happened, there's probably other thing that his parents didn't teach him then - how to hunt. [[note]] Given that he seemed to be in that age when lion cubs aren't ready to learn to hunt. [[/note]] This combined with the fact that zoo personnel served him steaks, caused Alex to grow up unaware of where meat comes from, given that so far his parents bringed him meat from already dead animals, which looked pretty similar to steaks that he was eating during his time at the zoo.

There's also a second reason as to why Alex gone savage - when he learns that he and his friends got stranded on a island, he's the one that is the most afraid of being away from home ([[NervousWreck Melman]] doesn't count, since he was more worried about his [[{{Hypochondria}} medical appointments]]). In ''WesternAnimation/ThePenguinsOfMadagascar'' the reason as to how Marlene goes savage after being outside the zoo is explained as her way to defeat fear. This could mean that Alex also gone savage due to fear of being outside the zoo.

In short, Alex's unawareness of where meat comes from, due to his parents not teaching him how to hunt in youth, and his fear of the wild caused his instincts to take over, forcing him to learn how to hunt and defeat his fears at the cost of his friends' lives.

As Skipper himself could put it: "[[ManipulativeBastard He]] and Hoboken deserve each other!". And thus, Makunga becamed new member of the Penguins RoguesGallery living in Hoboken Zoo, despite the fact that he wasn't Penguins enemy ''per se''.

[[WMG: Alex going savage in first film had other reasons besides him being hungry.]]

Correction: the group of lions is called "pride", not "pack".

Added theory about what happened to Makunga after Nana bringed him to New York in a kitty cage.

** Keeping in mind that it is obviously known by the pack, including Zuba himself, what a potent fighter Teetsi is, it is probable that he and Zuba have thrown hands in the past. Considering how Makunga is constantly trying to defeat Zuba, in spite of the fact that he is not a better fighter than him, it would be pretty expected from him to pit Teetsi against Zuba to have his minion defeat the alpha lion on his behalf.

* In all scenes except his fight scene, Teetsi is on the brink of collapse from sleep. If he isn't suffering from some short of sleep disease, he is probably just to lazy and irresponsible to even want being the alpha lion.

** It is possible that what Zuba lacks in muscle, compared to Teetsi, he makes up for in agility and skill. So if these two ever fought, Zuba would probably find techniques to turn the fight in his favor.

After reading yesterday A Foe in Need, where a rumor that fossas appearing in the series are descendants of fossas that were inbreeding with each other appears as justification as to why these animals are depicted in series as moronic, gluttonous, cackling, slobbering, and cowardly predators, I thought of it as a very good theory and a very good justification as to why fossas in the series aren't intelligent as their closest cousins fanalokas, and I included it into my Madagascar series headcanon and decided to post this theory here.

After Makunga's defeat, Teetsi would then suddenly have a chance to redeem himself (somewhere in the crowd) and do a victory dance while singing "Yay! Makunga's gone forever!", which can imply that he secretly hates working for Makunga and would sometime later come to Alex and try to apologize for what happened during the recent fight.

Considering how we kinda know how being feral works in the first movie, it doesn't seem ''that'' off.

* Jossed. If you've seen [[WesternAnimation/AllHailKingJulien All Hail King Julien]] then you know that King Julien was a descendent off of other KJs, including his Uncle King Julien XII and King Julien The Terrible. So KJ is just excellent at making a utopia over just one generation.
