In Episode 36, Fino recalls that the Chinese symbol for "ghost" was used in her tribe to show the way to a cemetery. There is an image of a graveyard filled with crosses as she talks about it. Also, there doesn't seem to be a language barrier between Fino's tribe and the other characters, meaning they learned English at some point from someone. It's not too far-fetched to believe they may have been taught by a missionary.

It's implied Alternate started pursuing the Eto Gun after finding a manual for it in Gordy's treasure chest, so he might have been trying to earn his father's approval.
