First off, there's obviously the Easter Egg in Jackson's Kong to the Sumatran Rat Monkey and of course the beginning of Braindead is on Skull Island. But second and more importantly, the movie has that same hyper bright look and large kinetic scale/size of other action oriented movies including horror ones so maybe it could very well be in a shared universe where good people come out on top and bad people get what they deserve.

My personal theory for how and why Vera went One Winged Angel at the very end.

Ultimately, it's a multi-stage process that ends with the victim turning into another Sumatran Rat Monkey. When we see Vera at the end, she looks sort of like a halfway point between a human and a rat monkey, especially since her skull became elongated and animal-like. The cycle only happens in full if you're bitten by a Rat Monkey, which is why only Vera went through with it.
