The very first episode opened up with Malory putting Sterling through a simulation that looks like torture porn, which she personally oversees (not to mention giving him the codename of her dog which she had a perverted fixation on). Then when Sterling wakes up from his coma Malory says their relationship is like a love story.
The only reason the writers won't say it outright is because it would push Malory from being entertainingly bitchy into a full-on monster.
