Getting hit will set you back in the fight considerably if it doesn't kill you outright, but successfully blocking it will win Mario the match even if it ordinarily would have killed him.

If you jump down, use Cutout, and try to leave, he will have an even more panicked reaction, begging you to stop doing that if you talk to him again.

* JunkRare: Enemy Cards, which can't be bought in shops, can only rarely be found in levels, and are occasionally dropped from defeated enemies. Despite this, they are easily the worst option in most combat situations, as most deal less damage than Mario's other attacks and all run away from bosses. Their intended benefits, being able to attack for multiple turns and take hits for Mario, are offset by their low HP and inability to guard, so most of them will survive one or two turns at best, not to mention that the combat is largely focused on defeating enemies quickly to begin with.

Goombas are even weaker than Shy Guys but the trope still applies.

* BoringButPractical:
** The Frog Suit card. It doesn't deal any damage to enemies, but it costs no paint and allows Mario to [[NoSell jump over]] a surprising variety of attacks. Some particularly powerful boss attacks can be dodged with a well-timed hop, and unlike in ''Sticker Star,'' it will last you the entire battle if you don't get hit.
** For as annoying as Spinies can be, their Enemy Card can be quite useful. Kiwano Temple has a room where you can use a Super Star to grind the cards very easily, and while summoned Spinies won't do anything against bosses or flying enemies, their ability to do solid damage to all grounded enemies onscreen make them highly usable for ending random battles quickly. They'll also act as a meat shield against enemies who survive, with their spikes able to NoSell certain enemy attacks.
** Among the types of Hammer battle cards, the basic Hammer is the best, as it deals the best damage alongside solid area damage and is easily the most common. Most other Hammer types, aside from [[TooAwesomeToUse Blazehammer,]] have some gimmick that causes them to deal less damage to enemies overall. Using Big and Huge Hammer cards as your main source of damage is not only viable, but very effective as well, especially as jump-immune enemies are much more common than hammer-immune ones.

* TheGoomba: The regular Shy Guys, as the actual Goombas are stronger than them. However, Shy Guys have a unique ability where they can swipe one of your cards if you take too long on your turn, and if you don't damage the Shy Guy, they'll escape with your card when it's their turn.
