* ArtEvolution: The first game wasn't quite SuperDeformed, but characters had rounder, smaller sprites both as a throwback to 16-bit games and to get around the lower resolution. With better assets under the art direction of Rafael Ventura, the proportions are longer and more detailed. Along with more distinct proportions, the animations are even higher quality than the first game's with more attention given to using punches and kicks compared with the somewhat amorphous attacks.
* BigBad: After losing much of his forces, the Final Dreadnought and the Kingdom Stone to Lilac and friends' continued intermeddling, Lord Brevon has [[KnowWhenToFoldEm declared Avalice a lost cause]] and fled to resume ruling his empire; the Kingdom Stone was the only reason he was willing to even stay on Avalice in the first place. Which is all well and good, since Merga is in a position to take over as Avalice's greatest threat now that the Kingdom Stone has been destroyed, [[SealedEvilInACan cutting the power that keeps her crystal prison shut]].
** To add to this, WordOfGod has confirmed that Brevon and Torque have resumed fighting each other in the depths of space. It's a good bet [[SuddenSequelDeathSyndrome no one will ever see Brevon again]].
* DerivativeDifferentiation: Taken a step further from the last game. One of the stated goals of the development team is to break the franchise away from its UsefulNotes/SegaGenesis and ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog''-inspired nostalgic roots to make the game a proper franchise in its own right. In terms of visual design, Lilac's outfit is now primarily white (albeit with blue accents) to separate her from Sonic himself visually.
* DifficultyLevels: Now sports a more in-depth version of this, though there's still the time standard easy-HarderThanHard difficulties. However, throughout the game, players can find gold gems or fuse their normal gems together into a gold one which makes the game easier, such as making bosses deal less damage, adding more lives, etc. To elaborate, in the Sample version, item sets are used to determine the overall difficulty; the default for the "Hard" setting is [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin "No Stock" and "Double Damage"]].
* DontMakeMeDestroyYou: Corazon ultimately doesn't want have to fight her sister as she is implied to be [[BigSisterInstinct very protective of her]]. But [[CainAndAbel she will if she has to.]]
* DragonTheirFeet: While Brevon won't make an appearance, his [[TheDragon right hand]] Serpentine is back. He somehow managed to [[NoOneCouldSurviveThat survive the Final Dreadnought exploding and safely landed back on Avalice with no ship]] using his '''[[PlotArmor mutated armor chest piece on the way back down as shelter no less]]''' (if the credits is to be believed) ''AND'' build himself a new suit and robotic arms...[[ImpossibleTask even though he has no arms]]. He's currently gone into hiding somewhere to find a way to return to space so he can [[PleaseDontLeaveMe reunite with Brevon]].
* EvilCounterpart:
** With the BigBad being a water dragon, there's a high chance that she'll be this to Lilac.
** In addition, Carol's sister Corazon Tea appears to be working for the bad guys. However it's purely [[NothingPersonal just business for her]].
* FlashStep: As demonstrated by the most recent trailer and most recent version of the demo, Lilac has gained a flash step technique she can use after guarding.
* {{Leitmotif}}: The girls will be getting their own themes, based on levels from the first game. Lilac receives Pangu Lagoon with a more synthesized, classy feel with strings, Carol gets Jade Creek with a heavy electric guitar lead, and Milla gets Relic Maze with a jazzy tone that still invokes the Chinese flavor from her exclusive stage from the first game.
* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters: While the first game had a fairly modest lineup with a half-dozen supporting characters outside of the main heroes, this game doubles the cast and WordOfGod has said the story mode will be longer as a result.
* MeaninglessLives: Rather [[AvertedTrope averted]]. A GameOver will force the player to start the level over again. If the player has an excess of lives, they can engage in SmashingSurvival to spend an additional number of them and revive on the spot instead of from the last checkpoint, meaning a stockpile of extras can be as valuable as a few of them. Of course, this only applies [[NoKillLikeOverkill if there's a body to revive]]. A special upgrade allows you to resuscitate this way with ''four Life petals'' instead of just your LastChanceHitPoint.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Thanks to the Absolution's destruction in the climax of the first game, the Kingdom Stone has been broken, allowing Merga to escape. In fairness, this was a far better fate than if Brevon had kept it for himself.
* NostalgiaLevel: Dragon Valley returns in this game, with a remixed theme to go with it.
* PromotedToPlayable: Neera Li, a boss character from the original game, is now a fully playable character.
* PutOnABus: So far, neither Torque nor Lord Brevon have been seen, and WordOfGod says that the latter will be absent. [[TheDragon Serpentine]] and Syntax will be making a comeback, though.
* {{Retraux}}: Still sports the same Genesis-[=PS1=] era graphical style like the first game, but this time, it even extends to the trailers, which look like something out of a 90s anime.
* TheVeryDefinitelyFinalDungeon: Bakunawa, the ancient dragon-like superweapon and Merga's stronghold, upholds this role. Although it's not much of a surprise as it was the [[LateArrivalSpoiler first level ever revealed in a trailer]].
* TimeSkip: The game takes place in a currently-unspecified amount of time after the original(Possibly two years later). The first teaser shows the heroic trio sporting much more mature appearances. Concept and promotional art also show that Milla, especially, has learned to harness her powers more effectively.
* TookALevelInBadass: Milla, in the first game she only had 3 offensive moves all of which required her shield and were either short range or required charging and limited her mobility. She now sports a melee attack doesn't have to carry her phantom block over her head, can jump while shielding and can do more rapid fire attacks among some other attacks utilizing her alchemy based magic much better, basically keeping and improving her old moves all while adding new ones making her much closer to Lilac and Carol in power and overall maneuverability.

* DevelopersForesight: In the demo, a bit before you actually have to fight the boss, the boss will chase you down a hill rolling after you, and usually your character will only just be able to keep ahead of the boss. However, if you're playing as Carol and you're riding her bike at the time, she'll be much further ahead of the boss than usual during the "rolling down a hill" segment.
