Taking place in an AlternateContinuity from the previous games, the story concerns Gabriel Belmont, an orphan raised by the [[ChurchMilitant Brotherhood of Light]] on a quest to defeat the eponymous [[BigBadEnsemble Lords of Shadow]]. Earth has been cut off from the Heavens, leaving the souls of the dead forever trapped in the mortal realm and giving unholy abominations free rein to prey upon the human race. In these [[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt dark times]], humanity's only hope lies in Gabriel fulfilling the prophecy of a pure-hearted warrior who will unite the powers of the Lords of Shadow and restore balance to the world. Gabriel himself also has a personal [[JustForPun stake]] in the matter: his wife Marie was recently killed, and he hopes the power the Lords of Shadow guard, pieces of an ancient relic called the [[MacGuffin God Mask]], will give him [[{{Necromantic}} a way to bring his love back]].

* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: For a well established and long standing AncientOrderOfProtectors who are supposed to be righteous warriors of God in their battle against the forces of darkness, the leaders of The Brotherhood of Light all have a history of making some very reckless and stupid decisions that not only perpetuate the suffering endured by the very people that they're supposed to protect, but also causes enough wanton destruction on their own to rival that of The Lords of Shadow themselves!
** The three Founding members of The Brotherhood sought to find a means to better equip themselves for vanquishing evil in God's name, and so they decided to perform a ritual that would allow them to transcend their mortal forms and apparently become second to God in terms of power. Yet none of them seemed to consider whether or not such an endeavor was a good idea in the first place or consider if there would be any drawbacks or consequences for doing so. But they go through with the ritual anyway, and become directly responsible for the creation of The Lords of Shadow, their dark counterparts, who would go one to wreak havoc across medieval Europe and set into motion the events of the game. The leaders of The Brotherhood even chose to keep this a secret form the rest of the order, further inspiring resentment from their knights as indicated by several scrolls that Gabriel can find.
** Despite being aware of the dark path that Gabriel was in danger of heading down, [[TooDumbToLive they do absolutely nothing to attempt to either redirect his path or even halt it entirely]]. Rather instead, they, very naively and foolishly, operate on a dated BecauseDestinySaysSo mentality and blindly assume that his descent into darkness was , ''apparently'', the only path available and that it was completely inevitable, so they, very egregiously, [[spoiler: manipulate his wife, Marie, into keeping his (Gabriel) son's birth a secret so that they could raise the child up and one day send him to destroy his father, which only made things ''worse'' for them and their order when Gabriel, later as Dracula, is driven mad over having killed his own son and declares war on The Brotherhood, sending legions of monsters to massacre entire Brotherhood strongholds]]. Yet, even after going through all of this trouble, absolutely none of them had ever thought to even bother to question the accuracy of the Mirror of Fate (which merely shows paths and isn't omniscient like God), whether or not this potential path for Gabriel was indeed concrete or not and, to really hammer the nail in further, [[CouldHaveAvoidedThisPlot they could have just told Gabriel about The Brotherhood's true history and what their founders had done right from the beginning, which could have potentially saved him from descending into darkness]] and ultimately, had they chose to do all of this, they could have perhaps helped Gabriel find a better way to stop the Lords of Shadow along with [[spoiler: Satan]] as well. [[WhatTheHellHero Pan is especially guilty of this too]], which can, for some perhaps, [[spoiler: make Gabriel's minor dressing-down of Pan to Agreus later in ''Lords of Shadow 2'' at least somewhat cathartic]].
** Zobek initially starts out the story as another one of Gabriel's allies who aids him throughout his adventure, [[spoiler: only to suddenly reveal at the end that HE was the third Lord of Shadow, The Lord of The Necromancers, all along, that HE was the one who cast the spell that separated Earth from The Heavens, and he also mind controlled Gabriel into ''unintentionally'' and ''unknowingly'' murdering Marie, his wife, and his other ally Claudia, all in the name of gathering the pieces of The God Mask from his fellow Lords so as to claim the power for himself. Oh, and as a bonus, another reason why he had Gabriel murder Claudia? It was so that Gabriel would have to defeat The Black Knight who protected Claudia so that he (Gabriel) would retrieve The Dark Gauntlet, which Zobek would later use to try and dispose of Gabriel once he had the completed mask. However in his lust for domination he was completely blind to the fact that Satan took advantage of ''him'' and was stringing Zobek along the entire time as well. Not only does Zobek face a swift defeat, having now outlived his usefulness, but with Gabriel's resurrection, all of his efforts have gone to waste and now, because of his treacherous actions, he has ''two'' powerful enemies with his, "old friend," being his undoing hundreds of years later in the sequel]].
