Magazine/{{NME}}'s list of the 500 greatest albums was published in 2013. Considered an answer to Magazine/RollingStone's [[UsefulNotes/RollingStone500GreatestAlbumsOfAllTime list of the same name]] (which had been re-issued the previous year), this list was generated with a focus toward newer, younger {{British|Music}} musicians. Drawing from various "best-of" lists of previous years, ''NME'' used its critical judgments of music from decades past to justify its choices while compiling opinions from current or previous critics who worked for the magazine.

Much like many lists of its type, it has been criticized for its Western bias and lack of genre diversity. This could be attributed to its [[TroubledProduction highly subjective compilation method,]] which involved contacting members of the magazine's staff to produce lists of their favorite albums given a short amount of time. This led to critics for the magazine heavily favoring some artists over others, which explains the disproportionate representation of certain acts within this list. It also does not precisely represent a "greatest album" list, but rather a list of artists who align closely with the tastes of the staff and not their relative importance in the musical canon.
