* As Pikasprey shown in [[https://youtu.be/Iki6aVZbawA?si=s3LnI76VDEYsZ-tL this video]], a glitch in the original Japanese release of ''Ruby'' and ''Sapphire'' allowed the player to surf on land and get into Winnoa's gym area in Fortree City, trapping them in the area due to the Kelcleon blocking the exit. If the player had no pokemon to learn fly, the only way out was to lose to the trainers. Fortunately, the international releases made that glitch non-existent.

* In the Japanese ''Pokémon Red and Green'', if you evolve your starting Pokémon before you get to the second town and back (which means raising it from Level 5 to 16 by LevelGrinding against Pokémon about levels 2 through 4), the game will assume you already have the Pokédex and never give it to you. This means you can't get Poké Balls or purchase items in general, and since getting the Dex is also the flag that tells the Old Man in Viridian City to move, you're also unable to progress past the second town either. This was corrected in Japanese ''Pokémon Blue'', as well as all international releases. While a new player ''can'' do this by accident, anyone else not doing this for the explicit purpose of glitching the game should probably get a psych evaluation for choosing anywhere that's not the Viridian Forest as their grinding spot for Brock.

* A method that can be done right near the start of ''Ruby'', ''Sapphire'', and ''Emerald'' after being able to buy Pokéballs in Oldale Town. All you need is to catch another Pokémon, trade that for a [[OneHitPointWonder Shedinja]] that only knows [[HPToOne False Swipe]], release all your other pokémon, and ensure you had no items or money. Outcome? You can't trade because you only have one pokémon, you have no money to buy pokéballs, and Shedinja only has 1 HP and only knows False Swipe, making it impossible to KO enemy pokémon. Even if you managed to get them to use struggle, the struggle will bypass Shedinja's Wonder Guard causing Shedinja to faint. Hoped to use struggle to escape the battle? Struggle has recoil damage so [[MortonFork you will still take damage]].

Is waterfall not an hm?

* From Generations III to VI, the game will not allow you to release a Pokémon that has been taught a move from a Hidden Machine. This is to prevent players from doing this themselves and getting stuck in a scenario where they can't catch a new Pokémon that can learn the move, since [=HMs=] carry traversal moves that [[AbilityRequiredToProceed are required to finish the game]], in hopes of defying this trope. The only way to release a Pokémon that knows an HM move is to teach that move to another Pokémon in the party. In addition, [=HMs=] cannot be tossed or sold for this very reason. In the Generation IV games, this can create a bit of confusion since Whirlpool is an [=HM=] move in ''[=HeartGold=] and [=SoulSilver=]'' but not in ''Diamond, Pearl and Platinum'' while the reverse is true for Waterfall. [[note]]This issue is non-existent from Gen VII onwards, where the HM system has been replaced with summoning other Pokémon for the task like in ''Sun and Moon'' and/or other services such as modifying your bike for water travel in ''Sword and Shield''.[[/note]]
