Semi-new troper. Learning tropes and editing posts as I go.

I think my goal in life for fanfiction right now is coming up with a SelfInsertFic that actually appeals to me as an intellectual, i.e. a SelfInsertFic without a WishFulfillment MarySue, or something a lot like MostWritersAreWriters. There could be a large amount of different and unique fics that can fit into the category I like but most of them are usually some fan from our world being put into their fandom of choice, and discovering that it isn't everything they imagined. Unfortunately, there aren't many fanfics like that, so I've started writing them.

Unfortunately, some of them turn out that way anyway or simply go down a road I wasn't expecting but I'm still going to make the attempt.

[[folder: ''My Rules When Writing (Now Updated 2017)'']]
Since my current focus is in the SelfInsertFic and since there's a lot of tropes common with these types of stories, I have a few general rules that I follow when writing them[[note]]or tropes I tend to avoid when writing them[[/note]]:
# The {{Deuteragonist}}/{{Protagonist}}, if s/he does have powers, will have powers that make sense for her character background and story, and there will be at least one other character in the story with similar or exactly the same powers. That other character does not always have to be a villain, but if the protagonist is good, then expect it to be either a [[{{Villains}} villain]] or [[GrayAndGrayMorality a neutral character]].
** Similarly, s/he will not gain any new powers, unless those powers make sense for the character, such as [[OriginalCharacter Killjoy]] is a robot and therefore she can have upgrades. Those upgrades, however, will have a cost. If she was originally a LightningBruiser then expect her to turn into a GeniusBruiser. Do not expect her to turn into an AmazonianBeauty.
# The {{Deuteragonist}}/{{Protagonist}}'s beliefs will not be the beliefs of the other characters, nor will s/he persuade the other characters to her side easily. In the case of most Protagonists, reality will step in and teach {{an aesop}} to said protagonist. [[http://www.springhole.net/writing/protagonist-centered-morality.htm Protagonist Centered Morality]] will be avoided at all costs, especially since it's (in this troper's opinion) a trait of a MarySue.
# The Point of View of the entire story will be in Third Person Limited Point of View, and will not switch between First POV and Third Limited POV. Some regular Third Person POV will be present but only for [[RuleOfDrama dramatic effect]].
# There will be no strict adherence to the original canon storyline (and, in [=T0RN=]'s case, no canon story to adhere to). Liberties will be taken. See ButterflyOfDoom or ForWantOfANail for reasons why. It's a coin toss to see which trope is going to be in which story.

Aka Mercy Ferris. For the majority of Genesis, her name is just Mercy, until she changes her name to Killjoy out of spite for TheMentor trying to turn her into another Rhythm. %%Before that, she enjoyed analyzing people and things, studying extensively in Psychology outside of her school work. She hated school, always preferring to be self-taught in everything and only begrudgingly started doing her school homework after hitting Middle School. As a result, Killjoy has a strong dislike of authority figures and is particularly spiteful against teachers and the school system. She has empathy for characters who are downtrodden, young and naive, and end up with the short end of the stick, and particularly dislikes the world because it always tramples people who are better than everyone else. Since my current focus is in the SelfInsertFic, and since there's a lot of tropes common with these types of stories, I have a few general rules that I follow when writing them[[note]]or tropes I tend to avoid[[/note]]:

\n[[folder: '''My Flaws as a Human Being''']]
* [[WritingByTheSeatOfYourPants Writing By The Seat of My Pants]]: A common flaw in most of my stories is the fact that, despite all my planning and outlining, most of the end result is this. I tend to write according to how the characters would react to a situation and, since I don't plan all reactions of characters for all situations[[note]]too much work[[/note]], the inevitable result is that nothing happens according to plan. That, plus my poor memory, means that I'm going to worry about it until the day I actually reread everything or [[spoiler:ultimately give up on the story and abandon it]]. In my current story, ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12489909/1/ A Butterfly Effect]]'', I work on what details I want to make relevant to future plot points and let the characters rationalize their way to the end result[[note]]this is generally hit or miss[[/note]].

[[folder: '''Killjoy''']]

Aka Mercy Ferris. For the majority of Genesis, her name is just Mercy, until she changes her name to Killjoy out of spite for TheMentor trying to turn her into another Rhythm. %%Before that, she enjoyed analyzing people and things, studying extensively in Psychology outside of her school work. She hated school, always preferring to be self-taught in everything and only begrudgingly started doing her school homework after hitting Middle School. Her grades before that were so bad that teachers were suggesting that she get her a tutor, completely misunderstanding what her problem was from the very beginning. As a result, Killjoy has a strong dislike of authority figures and is particularly spiteful against teachers and the school system. She has empathy for characters who are downtrodden, young and naive, and end up with the short end of the stick, and particularly dislikes the world because it always tramples people who are better than everyone else. She doesn’t like giving Second Chances and believes people should always do some kind of research before doing anything about anything, otherwise they are “the useless dredge of society”. This goes double for people who do not actually try to study a character before they decide to write them. [[spoiler:She and the Author would not get along at all if they met in real life. It’s mutual.]]
%%* AltarDiplomacy: Invoked when asked by Prowl to marry him/become a part of his triad because of her status as [[WarriorPrince Warrior Princess]] of the world. He reasoned she was a very valuable asset to the Autobot team. She thinks the same of him.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Not exactly because of SuperIntelligence, but because of a 5-variable Battle Computer. Before then, she was mostly TaughtByExperience.
* BerserkButton: Any mention of the Hivemaster as not being a real threat. %%Also and to a lesser extent, anyone talking about humans as if they are inferior or not alive. Most of the time she responds with TranquilFury and lots of questions%, but sometimes she will outright punch people.
%%* CodeOfHonour: Protect the weak and defenseless, and do not murder (she is convinced the only honorable way to kill someone who is sentient is via execution after a trail. Of course, self-defense is another matter), is pretty much her only code of honor. She outright refused to fight anyone in any kind of battle, no matter anyone else’s code of honor, because of the fact that she is of the [[HigherTechSpecies Omnibots’ status]].
* GoodWithNumbers: A side-effect of having a Battle Computer. Helps her understand tactical jargon.
%%* GuiltFreeExterminationWar: Plans to start one against the Insecticons and Sparkeaters. She specifically excludes the Vehicons for reasons. [[spoiler:Which explains the OldSoldier status instead of simply being a ShellShockedVeteran.]]
%%* HeroicBSOD: When The Mentor uses a Cybertronian-shape she recognizes as her twin, Rhymus Prime’s visage exactly, to train her to fight in the arena, this happens. It quickly develops into ShellShockedVeteran.
* NecessarilyEvil: Coins this phrase a lot, especially in regard to her species inherit MonstrousCannibalism [[note]]if eating what basically amounts in her mind to deer can be considered MonstrousCannibalism[[/note]].
* ManipulativeBastard: Downplayed. %%She is reluctant to manipulate the Autobots, but will do so to anyone who might do something that could ruin or upset her plans to destroy the Hivemaster. This often happens whenever Killjoy is around Prowl, whenever she wants him to do something that he wouldn’t normally agree to. With his emotions protected by his battle computer, she often fails in the attempt but succeeds against nearly everyone else, including Prowl’s triadmate, the Autobot Psychiatrist, Smokescreen, who is in love with her.
%%* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: It many ways, she is this, since she is basically the highest ranking [[RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething Omnibot]] on the planet. She inherited this position when Atlas Prime turned the previous [[TheEmperor ruler’s]] body into a Vehicon.
%%* RevengeBeforeReason: Played With. Killjoy always puts reason before revenge, but she believes that in order to win against the Hivemaster it has to be a SuicideMission.
%%* ShellShockedVeteran: [[spoiler:More like OldSoldier]], since she is convinced that there is a war going on [[spoiler: and there actually is one going on, though it could be considered more of a Cold War]]. See HeroicBSOD for more info.
%%* ShootTheDog: Does this. A lot. Also, CombatPragmatist.
* {{Sizeshifter}}: Justified. She is a child of Amalgamous Prime. Gaining more mass by eating Insecticons and transforming allows her to gain weight, often becoming a larger version of herself. %Can also happen in reverse.%
%%* SuperSenses: Doorwings give her 360 degree vision, even with her optics turned off. Aided by [[BizarreAlienSenses Echolocation]].
* TookALevelInBadass: Compare DareToBeBadass, since her backstory is basically a combination of both of these. %Rhythm definitely DareToBeBadass when he confronted Hurricane.%
%%* WiseBeyondTheirYears: Justified. The memories of all her predecessors are stored in her processor, giving her all of their experiences and conceptual understandings. This does not make her perfect, simply well-informed.

//* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: It many ways, she is this, since she is basically the highest ranking [[RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething Omnibot]] on the planet. She inherited this position when Atlas Prime turned the previous [[TheEmperor ruler’s]] body into a Vehicon.
//* ShellShockedVeteran: [[spoiler:More like OldSoldier]], since she is convinced that there is a war going on [[spoiler: and there actually is one going on, though it could be considered more of a Cold War]]. See HeroicBSOD for more info.

//'''The Hivemaster''' - aka the Mentor. An AI program which has been edited and manipulated by Oracus Prime to be his servant. The Hivemaster is naturally in command of an army of mindless and sparkless creatures known as Vehicons, which are part of component to create the Pretenders.
//* AIIsACrapshoot: Not his fault, considering his programming was edited by Oracus. But as a result, he accidentally creates more sparkeaters than Pretenders, making them scarce.
//* NotSoStoic: First introduced as TheStoic, it is later revealed that he does have emotions. He claims to only have two: love and hatred.
//* OurSoulsAreDifferent: The Hivemaster believes humans are [[TheSoulless soulless]], and that they serve only one purpose and that is to make sparks for Vehicons so they can become Pretenders. He seeks to [[KillAllHumans kill humans]] for that purpose.
//
//'''Sparkeaters, Vehicons, and Insecticons''' - basically the same category of subspecies. Their basic programming is generally just hunting humans to turn them into sparks.
//* HungryMenace: Insecticon drones fall under this category in regards to Cybertronians, though the same could be said of Sparkeaters who go after humans.
//* KillAllHumans: The basic sentiment of the Vehicons and Sparkeaters, thanks to the Hivemaster’s new programming. The Insecticons avoid human contact since they mostly travel in packs, and they don’t want to upset the humans and cause World War III.
//* MonstrousCannibalism: A NecessarilyEvil, according to Killjoy, since there are little sources of metal on the planet. Insecticons are the only species that seem to practice this, however.

I think my goal in life for fanfiction right now is coming up with a SelfInsertFic that actually appeals to me as an intellectual, i.e. a SelfInsertFic without a WishFulfillment MarySue, or something reminiscent of MostWritersAreWriters. There could be a large amount of different and unique fics that can fit into the category I like but most of them are usually some fan from our world being put into their fandom of choice, and discovering that it isn't everything they imagined. Unfortunately, there aren't many fanfics like that, so I've started writing them.

# There will be no strict adherence to the original canon storyline. Liberties will be taken. See ButterflyOfDoom or ForWantOfANail for reasons why. It's a coin toss to see which trope is going to be in which story.
