@/SomeSortOfTroper's mind was first made aware of the concept of tropes when he realised that every time a member of Starfleet encountered a force field or energy weapon they would always say it's "some sort of force field" or "some kind of energy weapon". Ensign Harry Kim often fell into this, in fact it was his entire career. The troper would often wonder why if the speaker was unsure of the true nature of the device or was somehow in awe or bemused by it, he would not explain to the Captain why it was so strange. If it was just a normally beaming device or energy weapon, why bother to insert the words "some sort of".

Many years later the troper found the entry SomeKindOfForceField explain that the effect was due to science fiction writer being able to formulate whole sentences on their own which is really disappoint when you think that fantasy writers can come up with whole new languages. The use of "sort" in the troper's name is because in his head he will always hear "some sort of.." instead of some kind of.

The troper has the unfortunately tendency to talk about himself in the third person, so far the only know cure is light spanking followed by the oral sex.
