* TheOtherMarty: Dominique Dunne was originally cast as Robin Maxwell, and managed to shoot some scenes that ended up in the series (but only with her back to the camera), before [[ActorExistenceFailure she was murdered by her ex-boyfriend]], causing production to be halted for two weeks (at the time of her murder she was in fact rehearsing with David Packer, the actor who played Daniel Bernstein). Blair Tefkin was hired to play Robin after her death.

** Kenneth Johnson's novel ''V: The Second Generation'' was based on his proposal for a sequel miniseries that ignored the events of ''The Final Battle'' and the tv series.

* NoBudget: The two mini-series shared impressive visuals, but for the TV series the quality plummeted. Sometimes this was rationalized in script; Diana elaborately explained the "improved" human food processing that is now just a guy standing on a platform. Sometimes the differences are ignored; The brainwashing process changes from an elaborate laser-and-smoke show to seating the human in front of some big TV screens. And in one case, a direct continuity error; In the mini series, the visitors can't pass for human because of a noticeable voice effect that was important to the plot. (The humans learn to simulate it.) In the regular series, the effect is forgotten about, and a visitor gets a girlfriend who thinks he is human.

* PlayingAgainstType: Although Creator/RobertEnglund would be better known has a player in horror films, he first hit the big time in this series as the lovable {{Woobie}} Visitor, Willie.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen: The original plan was for a mini-series every year for the foreseeable future. NBC decided that they wanted the story to conclude in the second mini-series; Kenneth Johnson countered with a proposal for a TV series, which NBC turned down. While making ''The Final Battle'', after Kenneth Johnson left for creative reasons, they decided they wanted a TV series after all. However it now took place after the Visitors had been defeated, and even though it was walked back in the first few episodes the menace was gone since they'd lost their foothold on Earth and no one trusted them, leading to a perpetual guerilla war occurring off-screen.

* ExecutiveMeddling: The original miniseries was to be a story about a fictional American-fascist regime before it was {{Re Tool}}ed to science fiction. Later, during production of the second miniseries, writer/producer/director Kenneth Johnson left the project when the focus was shifted from character development and symbolism to straight-up action.

* PlayingGertrude: Jason Bernard (b.1938) plays the father of Richard Lawson (b.1947) and more plausibly, Michael Wright (b.1956). Also, less egregious entries - Leonardo Cimino (b.1917) plays the father of George Morfogen (b.1933). Morfogen's character is mentioned as being born in a concentration camp, suggesting his character is supposed to be younger. Also, Michael Durrell (b.1943) and Penelope Windust (b.1945) play the parents of Blair Tefkin (b.1959)

* RetroactiveRecognition: Lydia is played by [[Film/ThisIsSpinalTap Jenine Petitbone]].
