* PlayingGertrude: Hartigan tells Nancy that he's old enough to be her grandfather. There's only twenty six years between him and Creator/JessicaAlba. This is mostly due to Alba playing a character a few years younger than herself (see above), while Willis plays Hartigan over a ten year time period.

* UnderageCasting: Hartigan is said to be pushing sixty, then spends eight years in prison. Creator/BruceWillis was fifty at the time.

Creator/AmyAdams, Creator/HelenaBonhamCarter, Creator/AnneHathaway, Creator/SalmaHayek, Creator/ScarlettJohansson, Creator/JenniferLawrence, Creator/RoseMcGowan, Creator/RachelWeisz and Creator/MichelleWilliams were also considered.

* AuthorExistenceFailure: Creator/MichaelClarkeDuncan and Creator/BrittanyMurphy both died before the sequel entered production. The former's role was recast, while the latter's was AdaptedOut.

Added DiffLines:

* InspiationForTheWork: In a 2016 interview with the Kubert School, Miller explained his inspiration for Sin City thus:
-->I've been a fanatic for a long time for old crime movies and old crime novels. But it started with the movies. And the old Cagney movies. Bogart and all that. I loved just how the morals of the stories are. They're all about right and wrong. But in Sin City in particular I wanted them all to happen to in a world where virtuous behavior was rare, which greatly resembled the world I lived in. It's kinda like the old Rolling Stones song, where every cop's a criminal, and all the sinners are saints, where the lowlifes would often be heroic, and the most stridently beautiful and sweet women would be prostitutes. I wanted it to be a world out of balance, where virtue is defined by individuals in difficult situations, not by an overwhelming sense of goodness that was somehow governed by this godlike Comics Code.

* AwesomeDearBoy: Some of the cast of Sin City signed on after seeing the test footage which would eventually become the opening scene. In the making-of it's noted that a lot of them had wanted to play FilmNoir characters for a long time, such as Creator/BruceWillis. Also, many cast members signed on due to other actors being in talks. Considering the large cast of famous faces, this seems reasonable.

Added DiffLines:

* RealSongThemeTune: "Cells" by The Servant predates the film and was not specifically made for it. Robert Rodriguez usually composes his own soundtracks, but he felt the song so evoked a FilmNoir atmosphere that he used it for the trailer. Ironically, while it's the most well-known song from the film, it's technically not even the main theme.

* ActorAllusion:
** When one cop advises another to kill Hartigan without hesitation, they're quickly dispatched and Hartigan quips "Good advice". In Film/DieHard, a terrorist who tells John [=McClane=] to kill without hesitation is offed, with [=McClane=] snarking "Thanks for the advice". Both played by Creator/BruceWillis, lying on his back and shooting upwards both times. Frank Miller even said that he thought of that very scene from Die Hard when he drew that scenario in "That Yellow Bastard". Little did he know…
** In the film of A Dame to Kill For, the way Hartigan's ghost talks to Nancy is very reminiscent of Creator/BruceWillis's role in Film/TheSixthSense.
** Creator/ChristopherMeloni playing a cop with marital problems, anger issues, has a dim view of rape and eventually JumpsOffTheSlipperySlope? Gee, where have we seen this before?
** Gail calls Dwight 'Lancelot.' Around this time Creator/CliveOwen had also starred in Film/KingArthur, though playing Arthur and not Lancelot.
** Creator/JamieChung takes up a sword to become a fearsome warrior in the second movie, around the time she was doing it in another show.
** Creator/MichaelMadsen amusingly shows up right after someone else gets their ear blown off. Although this time he's the cop.

** Creator/JohnnyDepp was the first choice for the role of Jackie Boy. But Creator/RobertRodriguez saw Creator/BenicioDelToro at the Academy Awards with long hair and immediately knew he was perfect. Creator/AdrianBrody auditioned for the role. Depp is, however, still in consideration for the role of Wallace if To Hell and Back is adapted.
** Creator/LeonardoDiCaprio was in talks for the role of Junior. But he eventually declined, and Nick Stahl was cast instead.
** Creator/SteveBuscemi was considered for Junior.
** Creator/MichaelDouglas turned down the role of Hartigan. Creator/MattDillon was also considered.

** The first film was planned to include the "Hell And Back" sequence with Johnny Depp as Wallace. It was eventually scrapped and didn't materialize in the sequel.

Added DiffLines:

* WagTheDirector: Nancy, as played by Jessica Alba, is always fully clothed (which is not the case for her comic book counterpart) because Alba has a firm policy of never doing nude scenes.

* TypeCasting: Mickey Rourke as an ugly, down on his luck bruiser with a heart of gold? He was born to play Marv. In fact, when Creator/FrankMiller met Rourke, the only thing he wrote down in his notes was, "Met Mickey Rourke -- HE IS MARV."

* ContractualPurity: It appears as if Creator/ElijahWood and Alexis Bledel were attempting to break out of it, respectively playing a cannibal and a hooker. Wood had just come off playing Frodo Baggins, while Bledel had been known for Series/GilmoreGirls and Film/TheSisterhoodOfTheTravellingPants. The sequel also features a cameo from Alexa Vega as a stripper - Vega had been a child star best known for Film/SpyKids, also directed by Creator/RobertRodriguez.

* RealLifeWritesThePlot: Creator/JessicaAlba signed on not knowing that Nancy dances completely naked. She asked for the nudity to be removed. Creator/RobertRodriguez and Creator/FrankMiller agreed, feeling there was no need for it.
* SelfAdaptation: Creator/FrankMiller was a co-director on Sin City, as Creator/RobertRodriguez felt that being such a direct adaptation of the original comics (the visual compositions usually being directly lifted from the panels) meant that most of his directorial work had already been done for him by the creator.
