** The original filming location of the mall was going to be Seaview Square Mall in Ocean Township, New Jersey, before the Eden Prairie Center Mall was picked to be the place to portray the fictional Red Bank, NJ mall in the film. Would have been nice to see the interior of Seaview Square Mall on film, before its eventual closure on December 31, 2000, and demolishing in 2001, to make way for a "Power Center" big box store retail center that stands in its place today.

Added DiffLines:

* AwesomeDearBoy: Shannen Doherty jumped at the chance to work with the director of , happily auditioning multiple times and stating that she couldn't believe a male writer had written a teenage girl so aptly.

Added DiffLines:

* StarDerailingRole: Shannen Doherty had been hoping to transition into films, but as the actor with first billing, even though she wasn't the lead, she took the majority of the fall for the film's Box Office failure, and was sent back to television.

Added DiffLines:

* ActorInspiredElement: Shannen Doherty suggested that Rene be seen wearing everything she bought on her shopping trip. She was possibly also motivated by her contract saying she got to keep whatever Rene wore in the movie.
* BillingDisplacement: Even though Jason Lee and Jeremy London are the protagonists, Shannen Doherty is billed first, due to her fame for Series/BeverlyHills90210.

Added DiffLines:

* CreatorsApathy: According to Kevin Smith, no one was happy to be there in the opening scene, which was filmed long after they wrapped, and Claire Forlani's accent-slippage was simply her not caring.

Added DiffLines:

* DawsonCasting: Tricia is fifteen, but her actress Renee Humphrey was twenty.

Added DiffLines:

* FakeAmerican: Claire Forlani (British) as Brandi.

** Creator/JennyMcCarthy auditioned for at least two roles but failed to get a part. According to Smith, she bore a huge grudge against him for years afterwards, accusing him and his crew of being sexist pigs who only invited her to the audition to be mean and make fun of her. Smith himself has disputed this and has said she was treated fairly, although he did confirm that an unusually large number of crew members showed up to the audition because they wanted to see "the Magazine/Playboy chick".

* CastTheRunnerUp: The book As Askew View 2: The Films of Creator/KevinSmith noted that Creator/JoeyLaurenAdams was originally promised the role of Rene Mosier, before being cast as Gwen Turner and Brian O'Halloran auditioned to play T.S. Quint but was then hired to play Gill Hicks.
* CreatorBacklash: Creator/KevinSmith famously made a mock apology for how awful this film was on the official movie website just to screw with all the fans who hated it. Though he's since clarified that while he was bummed by the mediocre reception at the time, he's since come around and loves the movie, claiming it's the one he still gets asked about the most.

** Narrowly averted in one case. Studio execs wanted to recast Jay with Creator/SethGreen. Kevin Smith stuck to his guns and insisted that Jason Mewes was the right person for the role. The studio still kept Green on call just in case, and refused to pay for Mewes' travel fees or hotel costs, and were even prepared to fire him on the first day of shooting if they felt he wasn't good enough. Smith let Mewes know about this, prompting him to prove him to give a better performance, and the studio finally caved.

** One piece of ExecutiveMeddling that Smith was able to defeat was the suits' insistence that he recast the role of Jay. Smith finally compromised by saying he'd hold a casting call for the part if Jay Mewes was allowed to read alongside the other actors. He did, and he kept the part. But if he hadn't? The front runners for the part were Breckin Meyer and Creator/SethGreen.

* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: The film is pretty much dripping with 90s culture, from the outfits to the music. Even Truth Or Date, despite being a 60s/70s throwback, is indicative of what was nostalgic in the 90s.

** However, studio executives got their way regarding aspects of Smith's raunchy humor. In addition to forbidding the use of "penis" or any explicit reference to it and any words meaning "fuck" that isn't "fuck", they also refused to allow Smith to make a joke regarding a woman getting semen in her hair. On the flip side, they pushed for full frontal nudity, including a brief moment with Joey Lauren Adams.
