* Uhtred's last meeting with [[spoiler: Aethelflaed]] in ''The Flamebearer''. He is riding out to achieve his lifelong dream of retaking Bebbanburg, [[spoiler: she is dying of some unspecified illness.illness, implied to be Breast Cancer.]] After promising to meet each other and live together in Uhtred's ancestral fortress the last line of the scene is [[spoiler: "I never saw her again."]] Bloody hell...hell...
* In ''War of the Wolf'', [[spoiler: Stiorra is killed, fighting off Skoll's men]]. Neither Uhtred nor [[spoiler: Sigtryggr]] is even left with time to properly grieve, since Edward summons them to submit to him, makes [[spoiler: Sigtryggr marry Eadgith, Aethelstan's twin sister, when Stiorra is barely dead]], and then dispatches them to deal with Skoll - or give the newly united realms of Wessex, Mercia, and East Anglia an excuse to invade.
* Uhtred returning to Bebbanburg after ''Sword of Kings'', having reluctantly gone to put Aethelstan on his throne. He had left Bebbanburg to do so against the advice of his wife, Eadith, and the two had argued furiously, and they parted on bad terms. He then met Benedetta in Lundene, a former slave in Edward's household who he was strongly attracted to (and it was mutual), but he resisted and was guilty for bringing her back to Bebbanburg... and broken-hearted to find that [[spoiler: Eadith was dead of plague, along with his son-in-law, Sigtryggr, and his grandchildren, as she had gone to nurse them in Eoferwic because she thought that's what Uhtred would have wanted - and to make it even worse, the plague didn't even reach Bebbanburg]]. He's also horribly guilty because a small part of him is glad that he won't face the complication of choosing between the two.
* In ''War Lord'', Uhtred and his oldest son, now Bishop Oswald, finally tearfully reconcile, with Uhtred telling his son that he is SoProudOfYou. [[spoiler: Later that night, Oswald is killed in an assassination attempt on Aethelstan]].

* Alfred's [[spoiler: death scene]] in ''Death of Kings''. [[spoiler: While his relationship with Uhtred was stormy to say the least, in that one moment the two men put aside their differences and show nothing but respect for each other.]]

* Uhtred's [[spoiler: near death]] at the end of the ''Pagan Lord'' [[spoiler: Its beautifully written with Uhtred trying to speak but none of the people with him hearing anything but groans. His disowned son Father Judas gives him his last rites and Uhtred is sure he can see his dead wife Gislea in the distance and decides that he'd rather go with her before they manage to revive him]]
