* Episode 24 was a tearjerker for quite a few characters.
** Nadia is now taking refuge at the docks, still mourning her fallen fishbone friends. She even requests a refill when her glass is still full. She's that lost in grieving.
** After surviving the skullgirl attack, Filia's family are visited by Vitale who orders to have them all killed. Vitale kills Filia's parents himself while Filia gets beaten within an inch of her life by Ottomo. Even the dog gets beaten down.

* In Episode 12, Peacock and her gang are out at the river, and while her gang is enjoying the overall sight, Peacock is looking at her reflection in the water- and clearly does not like what she sees. This is a stark reminder that underneath all that power and wild attitude is a broken girl lashing out at the world.
-->'''Tommy:''' The river's so beautiful at night. Don't you think, boss?\\
'''Peacock:''' Yeah. Beautiful.
* Episode 17 has us see Filia's life before getting Sampson. And not all is well.
-->'''Filia:''' We, uh... We got a new student today, and she... She took Carol's old desk.

* On the topic of the Renoirs, Parasoul's Origin Story "No Shelter" shows the days leading up to and just after her mother Queen Nancy transforming into the Skullgirl, and ''man'' is it rough on everyone involved. The reason Parasoul formed the Black Egrets and dedicated herself to stopping the Skullgirl whenever she comes about? It's because she witnessed her mother's painful transformation and learnt first-hand that no matter how seemingly selfless the Skullgirl's wish is, the Skull Heart will ultimately bring about nothing but pain, death and misery to her and her loved ones. And she was a ''[[HarmfulToMinors high-schooler]]'' when all of this went down! It's no wonder she's so strict with Umbrella: ''she's her only family left''.

* Painwheel's whole existence probably counts. Once just a normal girl, she was kidnapped and turned into a [[MindControl mind controlled]], Anti-Skullgirl monster. Things go downhill from there. She seems to have regained control at the end of her story mode and attempts to go home, but her parents reject her and call her a monster. Not only that, but it is revealed that she is still without freedom, as the Skull Heart somehow took control of her, turning her into the new Skullgirl.
** The DarkReprise of her Leitmotif, ''The Lives We Tried To Reclaim'', playing in her ending does nothing to help with the sadness factor at all.

** Has maybe the slightest tinge of Heartwarming, when you consider that Squigly will be coming back when the Skullheart reappears. Not "Goodbye", so much as "See You In A Few Years".

* While Parasoul's ending is saddening on it's own, the original plan was for the game to have MultipleEndings, and both of Parasoul's were [[BittersweetEnding bittersweet at best]]. Umbrella is on the verge of becoming the Skullgirl, giving Parasoul a SadisticChoice between destroying the Skull Heart and catching her little sister in the blast or wishing on it to prevent her sister's transformation, at the cost of eventually becoming the Skullgirl herself. If you took the former, Umbrella dies in her sister's arms, while if you took the latter, Parasoul dooms herself [[FateWorseThanDeath to something even worse to save her life]]. Had the MultipleEndings system made it into the final game, players going through Parasoul's story [[MortonsFork would be greeted with a lose-lose situation]].
** Perhaps the only character who would have gotten it worse than Parasoul was Painwheel; as already mentioned above, her life's already a living hell- and this isn't remedied in [[DownerEnding either of her endings]]. No matter which one them you would have chosen, Carol not only doesn't get her life back, but winds up becoming the Skullgirl. To elaborate, in her deleted ending, she wishes on the Skull Heart for her freedom- [[BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor and is then "freed" of any and all humanity that she had left, becoming a Skullgirl of pure rage]]. In her canon ending, Painwheel destroys the Skull Heart and tries to return to her family, only for them to not recognize her and call her a monster. Brain Drain has her return, only to reveal that, even with the Skull Heart's destruction, Painwheel is bound to become a Skullgirl anyway- implied to be due to the Skullgirl-blood experiments conducted on her.

* Poor Umbrella goes through a ''lot'' during her story mode: after being separated from Parasoul when the Egrets spot Marie, Umbrella is rather bluntly informed of the terrible things her parents did (namely her father starting a war and her mother transforming into one of the most dangerous Skullgirls ever), and then gets into a big fight with Parasoul that ends with Umbrella angrily wishing the two weren't sisters, then storming off. She admits right after that she was too mean and worries that Parasoul won't want to see her again. The two thankfully patch things up, but it's still heartbreaking to watch.

* While Cerebella may be [[BaseBreakingCharacter base-breaking]] [[TheScrappy among fans]] because of it, there's no denying how disheartening her Story Mode's ending is. Having successfully lured Ms. Fortune to her with the Skull Heart, Cerebella sees that the only way to retrieve the Gem is to crush her to death. [[MomentOfWeakness Blinded by loyalty to the Medicis to the point of setting aside her morals, if only for that moment]], she goes through with it and returns the Gem as ordered. It's only when Vitale praises her for it [[HeelRealization that the reality of what she did hits home]], [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone and she can only look away shamefully]].

* During the near end of her story mode, Annie has Double on the ropes. Then Double performs a BreakThemByTalking via shapeshifting into her mother (Both as the skullgirl and when she was human) and remarking about how despite her effort, it seems that people will succumb to the temptation of using the skullheart, even using the aforementioned mother form to mournfully say that she despised what Annabella become.

* Just look at Marie's poster; it's full of stuff like 'Goodbye friends' and 'This is the end'. It is kind of sad to think that this is the last we'll see of Skullgirls, given Mike's and Alex's stated intent to move onto new projects, and also [[WhatCouldHaveBeen all the ideas that never got to see the light of day.]] Although with the announcement that Annie is being added as a playable character after all these years, this is alleviated significantly.
