The Klonoa Series (or most of the notable releases in the Klonoa series, to be exact) is quite possibly one of the darkest and most emotionally heartrending "cute" series out there, right up there with ''VideoGame/{{MOTHER}}''. Take how ''Franchise/{{Kirby}}'' plays around with the concept of nightmares in a dream world and crank it up to eleven. For example:

!! ''Klonoa: Door to Phantomile''
* The scene where [[DiedInYourArmsTonight Klonoa's grandfather dies in his arms]] after beating the fourth boss was very heartwrenching too. In the [=PS1=] version, after Klonoa defeats Baladium, the former is seen running back to Grandpa's house while [[SayMyName yelling his name in anguish]] before the cutscene starts.
* After defeating Nahatomb after rescuing Lephise, everybody is proud and happy to see Lephise alive. While Klonoa is also glad to save Lephise, he's sad and afraid of losing Huepow after using him as the final blow to Nahatomb. He even yells in fear of Huepow's promise not happening... until Klonoa notices Huepow alive.
* The ending of ''[[VideoGame/KlonoaDoorToPhantomile Door to Phantomile]]'' and its remake can manage to tear one up every single time.
** Just to clarify why: Klonoa discovers [[TomatoInTheMirror the world he lived in was a fake.]] He belongs in a different Phantomile which he will be forced to go back to once Lephise sings her song. Other than the fact that he has no choice in the matter, he ultimately has to say goodbye to Huepow, his childhood friend--FakeMemories or not--and the scene they display is just heartbreaking. A portal appears and starts to pull Klonoa in, and after struggling with his emotions, Huepow tries to keep Klonoa from getting sucked in, because he can't bear to be apart from his close friend. Unfortunately, the portal is too strong. Unlike other partings, there's no [[ReunionVow "We'll see each other again"]] or even a [[AlwaysWithYou "We'll always be together"]], all they do is [[SayMyName shout their names in anguish!]]
*** The Wii and ''Phantasy Reverie'' remake was able to make this ending even ''less'' optimistic. The [=PS1=] version shows Huepow smiling after Klonoa is sucked into the portal, signifying either that he knows that Klonoa will be alright or that they'll meet again someday[[note]]Indeed, they ''do'' meet again in ''Empire of Dreams'' and ''Dream Traveller of Noctis Sol''[[/note]]. In the remake, there's no optimism in Hewpoe's face; he just sobs and looks into the distance as the screen fades to black. [[WordOfGod According to a behind the scenes online post by Hideo Yoshizawa]], storyboards for the ending of the original [=PS1=] version never showed Huepow smiling, but some of the developers decided to make him smile, making the Wii and ''Phantasy Reverie'' remake more faithful to the original idea.

!! Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil
* The ending to the Maze of Memories section where Lolo stares at a giant mirror where she see's herself getting picked on by other priestesses for [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer not being good enough for them]]. After she finishes watching, [[BreakTheCutie she starts breaking down]] and [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone frequently apologizes to Klonoa and Popka]].
--->'''Lolo:''' (breaks down) I... know.. I know... I know!
** As Lolo is crying, Klonoa tries to say something or comfort her, but realizes she's so upset that he can only sadly watch on.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4VJJ82LoIo&t=147s The music for that sequence]] ("Shattered Past") is a [[DarkReprise sadder and slower rendition of her character theme]] which sounds like heartbeats.
** Lolo spends the first half of the following BossBattle stuck in a HeroicBSOD, unable to help Klonoa. It isn't until Popka talks some sense into Lolo that she finally decides to lend a hand.
* After Lunatea has been overcome by sorrow, Klonoa alongside Lolo and Popka head back to La-Lakoosha to check on the High Priestess. When they return to the High Priestess, she's depressed and tells Klonoa to save Lunatea. This is accompanied by a somberer version of her character theme and Path of Goddess Claire titled [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tx-0x97Am_U "High Priestess of Sadness"]] which sounds [[DarkReprise entirely lonesome and less honorable.]]
* The theme of the Kingdom of Sorrow titled [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfGRZPbkdUY&t=146s "Hyuponia - Ruin of Sadness"]] is fittingly gloomy, lonely, and quite with distorted versions of songs for ''Door to Phantomile'' and Lolo's Character Theme. However, the level itself is accompanied by ruined houses and empty chairs and other references to the sadder moments that occurred in Klonoa's life.
* [[TragicVillain The King of Sorrow]], full stop. Everything about his situation is heartrending: [[spoiler: being forgotten, forced to live in isolation, and taking in the entire world's pain and sadness - to the point that his eyes are permanently red from weeping.]] Seriously, the guy needs a hug in the worst way.
** Even worse, it's likely not a coincidence that he [[spoiler: looks very similar to the first game's Klonoa]]. Given the role he has and the circumstances involved, it's very plausible that he's effectively an allegorical stand-in for [[spoiler:a tragic fate of Klonoa after being removed from the world and forgotten about, as if he never had a place with anyone or anything, and never being allowed to overcome his trauma and sadness. A Klonoa equivalent so lonely and mentally broken at this point that he [[SuicideByCop forces the heroes to kill him]].]]
* The ending of Klonoa 2 was somewhat sad too. Lolo, who became attached to Klonoa during their adventure, [[BittersweetEnding has to leave to become a full priestess, and says goodbye to Klonoa, who must once again leave for his own world. The two of them hug as her theme plays in the background, and then she cries in his arms.]] Unlike the first game, this parting ''does'' get a [[AlwaysWithYou "We'll always be together"]], delivered by Klonoa.
** The moments leading up to Lolo breaking down into Klonoa's arms is heartwrenching to watch. When she realizes he isn't from her world, she tries to keep her composure and not be sad that he's leaving. However remembering Klonoa's promise to never forget sorrow and sadness, tears start falling down her face [[StepfordSmiler while still smiling]]. She then asks him if it's okay to cry now which leads to her openly weeping loudly as she's hugging him. Lolo is then frantically shouting for him to not leave.
--->'''Lolo:''' (as Klonoa turns to leave) So is this... goodbye? (Klonoa silently nods) Of course... Lunatea isn't your world, is it? You have to go home, right? You have a home to go to after all, right?\\
'''Klonoa:''' (sadly turns back) Lolo...\\
'''Lolo:''' (happily) It's okay! I knew this was coming. I'm fine, really. I'll be fine... because I'm going to do my best. And you taught me that it's okay to cry, as long as I don't give up. (sad) So... so... (crying) so... it's okay if I cry... right? ([[CryIntoChest runs to Klonoa and hugs him before crying loudly]])\\
'''Klonoa:''' (hugging back, [[TryingNotToCry on the verge of tears]]) Lolo...!\\
'''Lolo:''' [[RapidFireNo No! No no no no!]] I... I...! Klonoa...!
** The line "We'll always be together" was first used in ''Door to Phantomile'' when Huepow promises Klonoa that he will be alright after [[HeroicSacrifice he becomes the final blow to Nahatomb]]. Klonoa later yells out this line in pure anguish in fear of Huepow not surviving. In ''[[VideoGame/Klonoa2LunateasVeil Lunatea's Veil]]'', [[IronicEcho he repeats this line]] to Lolo to cheer her up after learning he's leaving Lunatea.
--->'''Klonoa:''' Lolo... (looks down and shakes his head before wiping Lolo's tears) [[AlwaysWithYou I may leave this world... But we'll always be... together. I believe that if you don't forget the sadness of this moment, we'll always be... together. Okay?]]
** Before Lolo ends up crying into Klonoa's arms. We see [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Popka]] quietly listening to Klonoa and Lolo's final conversation and can only react by silently crying to himself. During the game's development, [[https://klonoa-at-blog.tumblr.com/post/181111667240/found-in-the-files-of-klonoa-2-lies-one-large there was unused audio of Popka letting out a sad whine during that scene.]] In ''Phantasy Reverie'', Popka appeared to had [[FellAsleepCrying cried himself to sleep]] but is able to witness Klonoa leaving.
